It's ironic though because when I first started using KDE Gnome, about 1998, it was Gnome that was quite a bit slower than KDE. Even then I preferred the look and feel of Gnome over KDE, even when it was slower. Although the truth is that I probably mostly used Enlightenment without Gnome or KDE. I think another big turn off for us Linux / FreeBSD users is the fact that KDE is a direct rip off of Windows, and that's not fun, especially when we install Linux to get away from the whole Windows quagmire. I wonder if KDE defenders simply are and have always been running on mega-powerful machines where even Windows Vista would run smoothly... I think another big turn off for us Linux / FreeBSD users is the fact that KDE is a direct rip off of Windows, and that's not fun, I don't grok this. How is the essential layout and set of concepts between Gnome, KDE and Windows any different? Taskbar, tray, Start button, panels, windows, min/max/close buttons, desktops, icons, drag/drop, etc. ? Also, I'd say while they both mirror each other, KDE is by far my favourite simply because it lets me do what *I* want to do (to a point) -- but this does not mean that Gnome can't (with practice). I think both 'lean and mean' and 'ultra configureable' are both important open source traits. We chose Gnome... In my experience, installing Gnu/Linux on *very* old machines, Gnome was just too slow. KDE was much better but Xubuntu was best of that breed. Gtk 2.12 and tap n hold
Adilson, Did we bottom-out on Tap and Hold functionality? I forget where we left that. I believe that Gtk 2.12 does not have this functionality without a Nokia patch. Currently there is no such functionality in our images. I usually discourage its use by applications, but we still need this for ease of porting maemo applications. But when i start using gutsy all three times i have these problems: 1. Corrupted graphics.(discoloured patches in desktop menu, criss cross lines on desktop) 2. More importantly: total freezeups. sometimes its when a new webpage is opened, sometimes when a program is run. I think its at times when hard disk comes under some sort of load(cos it starts humming louder). This problem is so bad and sometimes i have to boot up a couple of times before i am able to do anything. 3. on boot up many a times gutsy says it fails to read some configuration file and hence the display is not proper. 4. Often bug buddy comes up immediately when i boot up and i cont figure it out whats brought it up. What do i do: -in cases of complete freeze up or random error messages when i just booted in, all i do is cut off power and reboot. -in case of corrupted graphics i Log Out and log back in.That helps. if i have some program running i Switch user and come back in again.That helps too. - Meet people who discuss and share your passions. I just installed Lirc and it's installed 0.8.2. To install Lirc I used the following command from a terminal window: sudo apt-get install lirc You then have to choose the remote type, there are about 5 different SoundMon devices on there. Not sure which one is the right one. If you don't get the right one try the following command to choose another one... sudo dpkg-reconfigure lirc Hope this gives you a bit more to go on. In addition to Robert's suggestions, have you tried 'sudo dpkg --configure --pending' ? This will prompt for a password (your user's password, not root's - just in case you weren't sure). If MythTV was needing MySQL installed, it probably won't recognise it if you installed it from source instead of using the .deb (I've not tried it, so this is just a hunch). Cofion, Neil. P.S. I have my Motorola V220 working with moto4lin, although I had to fiddle about with creating a symbolic link and I have to run it using sudo every time. The /dev/ttyACM0 is the phone's filesystem, not just the modem. It's something to do with the custom protocol that moto4lin understands - not sure of the details, it just (mostly) works. Ubuntu starts-up correctly but I encountered a BIG annoying problem with my Alva Satellite 544: the display is recognized but I doesn't like the us table and I wasn't able to find the efficient method to prevent hal to redetect the Alva or to override my /etc/brltty.conf: even if I mv /etc/udev/rules.d/85-brltty.rules or block /lib/brltty/brltty.sh or provide the same text-table de to both /etc/brltty.conf + /etc/brltty.conf.orig, it *still* continues to start with us table and to override /etc/brltty.conf Please it would be very nice to resolve this very big bug and publish asap a new brltty package update: I'm becoming crazy! Agreed. My vote is to mount the device and display a desktop icon, and let the user decide what to do. However, I do appreciate that when I open up Nautilus that the mounted drive(s) are displayed on the left side (lower half of left side) where the aliases are listed. I would still like to see this functionality when a drive is mounted. Also, (I think that the initial thread mentioned using K3B...) KB3 is my CD/DVD burning tool of choice for both audio and data media (but again, I do not want for the tool to open unless I tell it to open). Yes I can play audio. I have read some stuff online with people having difficulty recording with laptop cards, but I have a feeling you are correct because the rest of the audio worked too easily. I have tried Audacity, it will not record either. Could that be due to the mixer settings? Thanks for the reply! I will give that a try when i get home thanks again for all the info. I have been researching this today while working :) should have just brought the blasted laptop with me. I'm pretty sure the connection should be good. I switched over to Vista and used Audacity to record a little guitar track and it worked very well. Thanks for all the good advice.. Yup recording tracks and then playing them back seems to be the way forward for me - not ideal as I like to twiddle the knobs on amSynth while I'm recording, but in fact I only usually do this with 2 or 3 amSynths per song so the rest could be pre-recorded. I've had a go at this and it's a bit annoying because it's hard to get everything playing in sync - is there a way I can press one button, and have Seq24 start playing, and some other piece of software that can play a pre-recorded track (Ardour, or something else) starts playing at the same time? (And maybe recording as well?) Sorry if this is a dumb question. I had a look for a very simple sampler that could just be plugged into Seq24, and couldn't find anything. Error starting the GNOME Settings Daemon
I'm experiencing the same problem as these folks here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=587410 Every boot or every other boot, at login I am presented with an error message stating that there was an *Error starting the GNOME Settings Daemon *. It's clear visually that alot of my settings did not load (wonky font sizes, etc.). It generally takes a couple times of log-in / log-out to get my session and desktop to load properly without error. Based on what others are saying, it'd appear that it's has something to do with enabling the real-time kernel. Anyone else experiencing the same issue or know of a fix? As you can imagine, this is becoming quite irritating. For me, it seems the first cold boot never works, but a restart usually does the trick. Isso pode estar acontecendo porque seu hd pode estar com algum problema, use o smartctl para verificar isso (conforme dito em uma mensagem dia desses) Mas também pode ser nada, como acontecia no meu... [Ubuntu-BR] DVD de backup Windows Vista novamente
Olá Will, Muito obrigado pela ajuda, acho que concluí que escolhi um formato mais restrito, ou algo do tipo para esse DVD em específico, gravei outros DVDs com outros PCs com W Vista e estes foram lidos normalmente no Ubuntu, na dica que vc me mandou nem o k3b montou esse volume. Acho que terei que fazer o caminho mais penoso mesmo, gravar outro DVD a partir do DVD problemático que é lido ao menos no W Vista. Ah, sim testei no SUSE também e ele monta mas não lê. Que coisa. provavelmente voce instalou o totem-xine, daí em diante os codecs que serão usados pelo totem serão xine e os codecs do gstreamer nao funcionarao mais embora continuem instalados. se voce se arrependeu de ter usado o xine como backend apenas instale novamente o totem-gstreammer que tudo voltará a ser como antes. Teve uma fala naqueles emails que eu queria por favor confirmar. Se gravarmos um dvd tipo dados com pastas de filmes em .avi e legendas dentro, um aparelho de DVD que lê diviex vai encontrar e carregar normalmente? desculpem a pergunta Um abraço e obrigado. Boa tarde galera.. seguinte estou com um problema para montar usando o file system cifs. ele me retorna NEGADO, quanto se eu montar com smbfs ele funciona alguma idéia. [Ubuntu-BR] Projeto sobre Interoperabilidade Linux X Windows
Olá pessoal, Microsoft liberou fundos para uma pesquisa sobre interoperabilidade entre sistemas win e linux, quem tiver projetos e se interessar, por favor responda a este email na lista. Mais sobre o projeto: Infelizmente o projeto está restrito a participantes do estado do RN, onde viram que o menor investimento em projetos nos últimos 4 anos está sendo nesse estado. Temos que criar um projeto e enviar para a Microsoft analizar. Não sei de qt é a bolsa-salário (pode ter certeza, que é bem gordinha) e nem detalhes a mais, pois o meu professor veio falar comigo mais me falou por alto... Como não era a minha praia (gosto de desenvolvimento de sistema e análise) eu n me interessei no princípio, mais agora depois de conversar com alguns amigos vamos colocar o projeto pra frente... Ubuntu et vieille machine
Bonjour, en prévision de Noel, je désire installer un système linux pour 2 enfants sur un Compaq Deskpro , pentium III, 450 Mhz, 128 Mo de ram, DD de 10 Go équipé d' un graveur CD et un graveur DVD. Mon idée est qu'il puisse lire des Dvds, des Cds, de posséder un traitement de texte simple et un logiciel style Paint et bien sur quelques jeux. Pas de connection internet necessaire(ils sont trop jeunes :4 ans !). J'ai tenter xubuntu 7.10 mais il m'annonce un problème d' ACPI (la machine ne s'éteint pas !) et ne semble pas lire les Dvds commerciaux. Dois-je chercher un autre système ? Et lequel ? Pourrais-je régler ce problème d'Acpi. Merçi, je tiens à indiquer que pour l'instant , je l'ai mis en dual-boot avec Win 2000 pro et que sous ce système, l'arret de l'ordi n'a pas de problème !! J'attends encore avant de le virer. Je me pose la question si une distrib comme Mint ne serait pas plus adapter ou Edubuntu ? Je ne voudrais pas être pessimiste, mais il est bien possible que cette machine ne soit simplement pas assez puissante pour lire des DVD-video.
