Docks are a problem (though the rest seems alright) 1) None of the docks out there work properly without compositing 2) None seem to be stable 3) They are not actually as good as a task bar (in many people's opinion) 4) The implementations that I have seen do not work as well as apples dock (which is only barley functional enough to be usable). 5) They take up way to much screen space for the functionality they offer ( e.g. if you run several document windows you have a screen full of open office icons but no way to differentiate between them). So from these points I think docks would not be a good way to go (but if there is space I definitely thing they should be included, after all they are popular amongst some people, especially Mac refugees. Re: [ubuntu-art] next meeting
Ah yes... I remember the look of AIX from visiting my dad at IBM ages ago. Now he works from home using Windows, but spends much of his day remotely logged in and working in pure text on his VM account that dates back to the 60's or 70's. I think that old AIX model of handling windows and minimized windows is on the right track. Of course its nice to be able to easily access minimized items even if your desktop is blanketed in windows... but I guess a simple 'show desktop' shortcut or button fixes that. I like how they handle that in Mac, where you hit the button and all your windows slide to the edges and then slide back into place after you've done whatever you need to do on the desktop. Personally, my motivation against additional screen elements is that we already have too many. The proliferation of panels and applets and menus is infuriating, to me. And this is true across all OS's. Its strange to say so, but I really despise the top + bottom panel default configuration in GNOME. Its too much, its confusing (and for new users, a visual assault), and it wastes too much spaces, particularly as computers transition to widescreen. And vertical screen space is crucial! I'm tired of scrolling down constantly! This criticism also applies of course to Apple and their decision to have both a horizontal menu bar and a big honkin' horizontal dock, especially when all their machines are now widescreen. Its awful and stupid. Strangely, I find that Vista's setup draws my ire the least. Just one taskbar. Set it to auto-hide and throw it onto the left edge of the screen. Not fancy, but it works. I mostly ignore it unless I actually want to launch an app or access the system tray. In Vista I use 'switcher' which is basically an expose clone... between that and alt-tab I'm pretty happy, but I'm thinking about looking for a workspace manager to reduce clutter and divide up tasks. -Sumit xl cheese wrote: When I worked at IBM we used AIX linux. I think the way forward would be to in some way eliminate the paradigm of taskbar or dock items representing open windows and instead work with a unified system in which it is always the windows themselves that you are selecting. This could mean perhaps that visible windows do not appear in the taskbar, and that minimized windows are shown in the taskbar as live images of the window with overlayed text identifying it (this is pretty similar to minimized windows in Mac's dock). With intelligent implementation of multiple desktop spaces and 'expose' the need for a traditional taskbar diminishes. 'buttons' in the desktop manager should be for launching applications or other such actions. Active windows should be represented as exactly that: windows, even if in miniature form in a taskbar/dock or in a tiled form (expose). Re: [ubuntu-art] next meeting
I can see some good points there! Possibly a good goal for a release where we try and break from the standard desktop environment layout (much more natural) but at the moment if you shrink down, say, a few open office documents to a size where its not intrusive it is fairly indistinct (an icon would be better). A few of apples applications have this behavior on the dock and while for movies it works rarely will anyone ever have more than one playing (let alone minimized) but for documents this definitely doesn't work, even with very very large zooming effects. I do think that a task bar replacement is in order after all this time however unless something *equally* functional in *every* way can be found then it would be worth considering. The great thing about the task bar is that it uses a tiny amount of space and does its job very well. Just because something is old doesn't mean it should be replaced. If it aint broke don't fix it. On the other hand I am definitely not saying do not try and find a replacement (or remove optional functionality like docks), after all this is what Linux is all about! The problems with shortcuts is most people never know about them as people don't generally read the manual - they just figure things out based on what is visible to them. Functionality that is only available through a shortcut is a bad design decision. 90% of the problems Windows has stems from the fact that installers can do whatever they please - who's bright idea was it to let software handle its own install rather than the system? If MS made a proper installer and forced all the old school ones that enjoy making a mess to run in a sandbox/vm and simply not allow people to run .exe's (unless they know enough to let them) that would be the bulk of their problems solved. The recently used list on Windows is a godsend just because the start menu is generally so badly organised it takes ages to find anything. I still think it is worthwhile though and could be easily done on gnome just by adding a new application category of 'recently used' that would do the job to the main list - it wouldn't necessarily need to be the first item either. I've added an expanded quick and dirty idea for the gnome bar that would add this functionality and also expand the utility of the functionality of the main toolbar. Most other systems seem to use an expanded version and using Gnome afterwards seems a little bleak. -- ubuntu-art mailing list ubuntu-art@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-art -- ubuntu-art mailing list ubuntu-art@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-art

Javad Ayaz wrote: Does anyone know how to download files from the iplayer? The main problem is the RTMP protocol used for streaming FLV data to the Flash player. RTMP isn't currently supported by any stable Linux application other than the closed-source Adobe Flash Player. There is discussion on the development of an open-source RTMP handler on this forum (Linux on the XBox): http://www.xboxmediacenter.com/forum/showthread.php?t=27063 So far they have written a script to extract an RTMP URL given a BBC iPlayer web page URL: http://www.xboxmediacenter.com/forum/showpost.php?p=162482postcount=70 It looks like RTMP will shortly be included in the Gnash open-source Flash player, and in the PHP CURL module. From there it will be little effort to take this code and insert it into, say, mplayer and then use -dumpstream to rip the stream down to a file. So the answer is: wait a couple of months and then download the latest versions of Gnash, CURL and/or your favourite media player. In the mean time, the only method that works right now is screen-grabbing your browser window with something like Record My Desktop. I have to agree, the most reliable type of hard drive is RAID array. I've had a software RAID1 array for four years now, have had several different brands fail (including Seagate, Maxtor and Western Digital) but have not lost one jot of data. I presented a Software RAID1 HowTo using mdadm a while back at our local LUG, the notes are here: http://www.aoakley.com/articles/2007-04-18.php Hard drives do fail, no matter which brand. Raid is more reliable, but let's not get carried away... A power supply going bang, a lightning strike close by or just a miss-key will kill all your drives or delete all your data, no matter how good your raid array is... I've seen it happen all to often... Even to technorati who think they know it all... I can't image the pain of losing 10+ years worth of digital photos, never mind the documents, videos, music, etc... As I keep saying to my friends/relations/colleges, back your data up *before* you realise how valuable it really is... The best advice is to buy a separate USB harddrive, every so often copy all your data to it, and then UNPLUG it and put it in a draw somewhere. Maxtor are effectively Seagate's budget range these days, so I'm not too confident in their quality. Western Digital have recently produced some power-efficient drives (their 'Green Power' series). Yes, XFCE is also one of the desktops that is adding screen reader and accessibility support. I believe XFCE 4.4 uses the same gtk2 accessibility mottle that Gnome uses. I haven't tried it myself, but orca should work with XFCE 4.4 and later. I'll have to install it and try it sometime. FYI, if you want to install XFCE under Ubuntu you can run apt-get like this sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop in gnome-terminal and it will install XFCE for you. Then, all you have to do is change the session manager to login using XFCE instead of gnome. If you want to install the KDE 4.0 desktop when it is released you can do something like sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop and it will install the latest version of the KDE desktop Ubuntu has on there servers. Just for your information Ubuntu has two versions besides the main Ubuntu disk called Kubuntu and Xubuntu. Kubuntu comes with KDE instead of Gnome, and Xubuntu comes with XFCE instead of Gnome. All it does is make it so you can't move an applet without the toggle in the context menu, but you can only move the applet by opening up the context menu anyway (thus making it difficult to move the applet by accident). In conclusion: yes, we should probably remove the lock option on individual applets (unless there's something missing; I'll look into this more deeply if I have time later this week), but that's a separate issue. Which brings us back to my original question (see subject line). :) -- William Lachance [EMAIL PROTECTED] signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part -- ubuntu-desktop mailing list ubuntu-desktop@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-desktop

There was also a -686 kernel, which is likewise replaced by -generic. mvo proposes to automatically transition these specific kernels to the -generic kernel, and proposes using the output of uname -m to determine whether the -386 transition is desirable (the -686 transition is a no-brainer). soren proposed an alternate suggestion of using the logic for kernel selection from the installer. mvo will investigate. == FOSSCamp and UDS Sponsorship proposals == The deadline has technically passed, though we have a slight extension. The meeting was used to get a last-minute round-up of additional names which Keybuk will sort through. == FOSSCamp team attendance == Attendance of FOSSCamp this year will not necessarily be for the entire team, instead this will largely depend on whether there are upstream people attending that you can interact with. == UDS sessions == A request was made for team members to think about sessions for the next UDS, and have a list by the team meeting next week. == Activity reports == === Jonathan Riddell (Riddell) === done: * Testing and releasing Alpha 4 (Thu, Fri), followed by * Taking new backups of various things since Alpha 4 candidates had wiped my backup hard disk * Packaging KDE 4.0.1 (Friday to Wednesday) * Reviewing patches to kdebase updating consolekit and LUKS support * Pondering and discussing people and topics for FOSScamp/UDS * Working on System Config Printer port (Wednesday) blocked: * Waiting on seed changes for KDE 4 CDs next week: * System Config Printer port No milestoned bugs === Kenneth Wimer (kwwii) === * worked on panel icons, added to launchpad. getting some help from community (yeah!) - see attached pic for an example attachment:panel_icons_example.png * art team coordination, meeting on friday * wallpapers, clear-looks gtkrc - planning on putting in a new wallpaper every week or so for testing. Re: [Ubuntu-BR] Pensamento Linux
[Ubuntu-BR] Comportamento estranho no Boot Ubuntu
