In fact, I do like really slightly rounded corners, not totally sharp.
On the image I uploaded, the rounding is only 2 pixels. Could it be
possible to try that?

Also, it would be nice to:
- try windows with no border (only a thin black line, like on the
screenshot), only the top bar;
- narrow the top bar of windows, which is currently a bit too large
(to my liking);
- try using something a bit darker, with more contrast in the
gradient for windows and taskbar - by the way, is there gradient in the
taskbar?
- maybe try other fonts? I know that's a bit adventurous, but why not?

I added shadow under the active window on the screenshot. I think that
could be enough to distinguish them from inactive ones.

I like the gray menu bar in windows, but maybe it would be worth trying
other things. I'll test that a soon as possible.

Many thanks for your work Anton,

 has already been discussed.

Good Work to everyone for Intrepid! ;-)

The best way to find old posts is at
 https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-art

I believe this has been discussed in an indirect way, though that was
prior to Hardy's release. It's my opinion that Clearlooks is the more
interesting theme because of its use of solid gummy effects to
highlight selected widgets, as opposed to the horrible dotted lines
for Murrine and every other theme out there right now. It is
surprisingly unique, not just for GNOME but for operating systems in
general. As well as looking better, this is also undoubtedly better
for usability since it makes the selected widget a lot more visible.
The UbuntuLooks theme does a nice job with Clearlooks by not having a
gradient for toolbars (which never works because of windows having
lots of toolbars and the Metacity theme often adding a gradient
itself), instead having a sharp divider beterrn menu and toolbar.

Having said that, if Murrine took on the same idea there, I would be
much more interested in it. The glassy buttons are well done, and I
understand the engine gives artists a lot of power :)

With horrible dotted lines I think you mean the lines around a button
when it's pressed or active. Well I'm pretty sure that this can be fixed
with both engines. It's likely just a line in the theme IMHO.

I would prefer Murrine because I think it's slightly faster and has much
more possibilities. The glassy effects can also be done with Clearlooks
but I would say they look just better with Murrine. We could also mix
the 2 engines.
And: Murrine supports that RGBA thing. Isn't that reason enough? ;)

I don't know - probably, but it _could_ be an engine bug. It would
likely be a case of applying the style to the right class. Check that
the style you want is being applied by making some obvious change like
red tect - if that works for the text in the right place, it is an

Wow, nice work, Anton! This theme looks excellent. I also prefer the
smaller borders because of how much diversity there is inside the
windows; it would be difficult to find one particular border colour to
suit without the things feeling like cages. It works quite well here
since the theme doesn't beg for rounded corners; it looks really
sharp, and the square corners add to it. I think hiding the title for
unfocused windows can hurt functionality, though, undoubtedly causing
some displeased users.

I also love the way you have the menu blend with the title bar for
unfocused windows, as well as that little shadow underneath. For a
half second, I was slightly sceptical of having the blended menu bar
only for unfocused windows, but I think I like it that way now because
of how it helps to break up the content. There are a surprising many
users who simply ignore menus, so this should bring them to their
attention.
This also should fix a lot of the ugliness problems that occur when
windows have numerous rows of toolbars...
That, and I like how content looks really diverse and bright this way,
as opposed to the drab and boring effect we often get when everything
is the same colour...

Hi Anton!

Nice work, this new version begins to have a nice look! Just an idea: do
you think it would be possible to put a shadow only under the active
window? That would make it really different from the others, on top of
everything (like when you pick a paper among a big bunch of papers on
your desk, and lift it up to read it).

I don't like the color for the selected element in the menu - a lil' too
pink for me - but I don't have any other idea yet...

Also, I find the top bar merged with the menubar on inactive windows
quite classy. Do you think we could give it a try for active windows?
And then we could try making inactive windows as neutral as possible
-- i.e. like they didn't have any volume -- with the menubar, the topbar
and the rest of the window all attached together with the same color (a
bit like on the mockup I made, but with the menubar in addition). To go
into details, it could also be nice to make the thin line around
inactive windows a little less black, more gray.

That's all for the moment!

Would having a flat title bar help ? In my mind, I was thinking a gilouche
sort of a title bar with very minor rounded corners in the exact color as
the emerald decorator is right now for the active windows. Or may a black to
gray gradient shift (top to bottom direction) instead of the existing gray
to black. That would bring the colors of the active title bar closer to the

I still think that a better solution for the active titlebar can be

Hi,

I have the following plan:

1. Make what you can with the gtkrc file and the windows decorator.
Match colors, test usability and so on.

2. Create a new engine that draws the widgets relatively different from

Feisty. And when I do ctrl-space, nothing is happening. When I
open the SCIM GUI setup (preferences - SCIM), everything
looks to be set up properly to me. So what more do I need to
 do to get this working?

 1) Ensure scim-tables-additional scim-modules-table packages are
 installed
 2) In /etc/X11/XSession.d create file 75custom-scim_init and have
 the following entries in it,

 export XMODIFIERS=@im=SCIM

 export GTK_IM_MODULE=scim

 export XIM_PROGRAM=scim -d

 3) Restart the session. Open Gedit and try inputting using Scim
(Ctrl-Space for toggling Or Choose from Right Top Corner of Panel)

I was working on the computer several hours yesterday involved in
various works, and it was not functional. But after having rebooted a
few times, at one point it suddenly appeared in the lower right coring
above the trash, as an icon. I clicked on it, and SCIM roared into
life. For some reason, now it has started to work on its own! So now it
seems fine, I do not know why. Nonetheless, the info you have given is
extremely useful so that in future I will know how to deal with the
problem if it ever happens again.

My fault. The driver expects the firmware files in b43 directory. The
correct command is (I have verified on my ibook :-D )
'sudo b43-fwcutter -w /lib/firmware/b43 wl_apsta-3.130.20.0.o' (Replace .o

In case you get error 'directory does not exist then do 'sudo mkdir

I did this, and now I see last small issue here. Now /lib/firmware
has 3 folders - the generic, the b43, and the previous b43legacy folder.

the b43 folder has created another b43legacy folder inside instead of
the .fw files. Both the b43 legacy folder are restricted. I can do sudo ls
to peep inside, but when I do sudo cd b43legacy it says command not
found. So how do I fix this?
Why is it stopping me as sudo too?

I suppose we need to have the following structure for wifi to work? --
/lib/firmare/b43/(.fw files)

Actually the opposite is true - there's a tool to help you create your

There are others too, such as remastersys and reconstructor.

but what about the larger capacity DVDs?

A DVD of Dapper does exist, I know this because it came with The

Dunno about the other versions. It wouldn't be much trouble to download

I am not familiar with it at all! :) I just did some googling now, and
it seems you need to have faac and faad enabled for ffmpeg.
 run:
 ffmpeg -fflags
and that should show the configuration (dont know if that is what that
option does originally, but it shows the configuration and an error,
ignore the error), check if the output contains something like
--enable-libfaac --enable-libfaad ,i think ffmpeg in ubuntu is compiled
without aac, I don't know if it's avaiable in some other repo with aac
enabled, or if you have to recompile with aac flag.

also make sure f libfaac and libfaad are installed on your system,
 (search using synaptic).

 Peace,
 Seif A.

it does help, you do not have ffmpeg compiled with faac enabled, you
need to recompile ffmpeg or install a one precompiled with faac, the
ffmpeg in the medibuntu repository seems to be compiled with all codecs,
add the repositories as detailed here:

I am not sure what happens then, it should show up with updates, or you
can manualy re-install ffmpeg.

it does help, you do not have ffmpeg compiled with faac enabled, you
need to recompile ffmpeg or install a one precompiled with faac, the
ffmpeg in the medibuntu repository seems to be compiled with all codecs,
add the repositories as detailed here:

I am not sure what happens then, it should show up with updates, or you
 can manualy re-install ffmpeg.

[ubuntu-uk] Login/Logout Scripts

2008-05-05 Thread Rob Beard
Hi folks,

A couple of us in the Devon Cornwall LUG are looking to setting up
some mobile internet kiosks (well, old laptops with a server running
Edubuntu) for a couple of local events that are coming up.

The idea is that the time a user can use one of the laptops for is
limited to say an hour.

I've managed to write a script that will log the current user off after
an hour (but give a 5 minute and 1 minute warning before forcing the log
off).

We'd also like a script to run at logoff to reset the users password (so
they can't just log back on for another hour without asking first). For
this I was thinking of a script to reset the password using passwd.

The thing is, I wasn't sure what the best way of running the login
scripts was.

I see in /etc/gdm there are two directories call PostLogin and
PostSession, has anyone actually used these?

According to the contents of /etc/gdm/PostLogin/Default.sample, it runs
as root after login, so I wonder if I could run my autologoff script
from there and at the end of the autologoff script have a line that
resets the password? (I presume any scripts executed from the Default
script will run as root too?)

If anyone can advise me on this it would be really handy.

Ta,

Rob

I've created a wiki page https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LugRadioLive2008 for us

Hardy, Inaccessible Battery Recall Notification?

2008-05-05 Thread Al Puzzuoli
I have been using Hardy on my Thinkpad T43 for several weeks now. yesterday, I
had a sighted person with me when I first logged into the system. I found
out that immediately after logging in, a very obvious message was being
displayed, warning me that my machine's battery may have been recalled. I
know my battery is alright, so we checked the do not show again box, pressed
ok, and the message no longer appeared after that. Although this message has
obviously been appearing at each login until yesterday, it seems that it is
completely undetectable by Orca. Is this a known issue? If not, where should
the bug go?

Thanks,

You can install both firefox 32bit and firefox 64bit alongside each

There were instructions on the ubuntu wiki in the 64bit section on how

Re: undelete help

2008-05-05 Thread Matthew McKinnon
Hi;

Take a look at http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec

Photo-Rec is file data recovery software designed to recover
lost files including video, documents and archives from Hard
Disks and CDRom and lost pictures (thus, its 'Photo
Recovery' name) from digital camera memory. PhotoRec ignores
the filesystem and goes after the underlying data, so it
will still work even if your media's filesystem has been
severely damaged or re-formatted.

PhotoRec is free, this open source multi-platform
application is distributed under GNU Public License.
PhotoRec is a companion program to TestDisk, an app for
recovering lost partitions on a wide variety of filesystems
and making non-bootable disks bootable again.

Hope this helps;

Cheers;

You can get the rt-kernel without problems, the package is called

Hi there,

I'm thinking about transferring some old stuff from VHS to .avi or DVD
via my Ubuntu Studio setup. I think probably the easiest way would be
to replace the graphics card in my Dell Dimension 8400 with something

input would do just fine. Anyone have a suggestion/experience to

Yeah, and if I could afford that, I could probably get a 2gib flash drive

I'll try to get a portable console 7zip and maybe try it too. And maybe I'll

Just get 7zip. You can run the console based version right off the
flash drive without installing it. It can create volumes of a user
specified size. The other option is to install cygwin into a flash
drive (or usb hd) which can give you access to some of these handy gnu
tools at the cost of a lot of space (fat32 is not at all efficient at
storing a bunch of small files, so a cygwin install uses more space than
it needs to because of fat32 limitations).

The advantage of 7zip is that it is cross platform, free as in libre as
 well as beer.

If you can afford it, a 2.5 usb hd that is powered from the usb port is
a good idea. I use mine almost everyday (even better you can store
vmware player or qemu on it and run a linux VM from your flash drive
without modifying the host OS). Of course 80+ GB of storage in a small
 form factor is handy too.

Just a few things.

* There looks to be a upgrade issue. (System sees you as Ubuntu and

* Just feels messy. (obviously my OCD opinion)

Big thing is uses are using a different base. Just has made it difficult

So personally, I recommend a clean install of Studio and not just use of

Lucas, não leia só o título.

Prezado Maike,

Você poderia atualizar o 7.10 para o 8.04 on line via gerenciador, creio

Você define as

efetuar a tarefa.
as implicações dessa troca.

do sistema.

Porque? O padrão é UTF-8, ao menos para Web. Então não vejo o
porque de alterar. Talvez o problema seja o pessoal do Olhar para

Sim, todo o X será alterado, incluindo a formatação do arquivos
retrocesso:

consegui instalar a minha placa, pra dizer a verdade pra vcs, ficou muito
bom, instalado direitinho ;-)

   - /etc/default/linux-restricted-modules-common

   -

   sudo rm /usr/src/fglrx-kernel*.deb

obrigado, Emanuel Moraes

TexturedVideo enabled to support accelerated video playback, como eu faço
isso gente? :-o

Please note: Depending on the particular ATI card that you own, you may or
may not automatically have all of the relevant driver features enabled.
R5000 and R600 cards (X1xxx, HD seris, and newer) in particular will need
TexturedVideo enabled in Xorg.conf (rather than the traditional

[Ubuntu-BR] Problemas no compiz e no cairo-dock

usar apenas o cairo-dock.

Se alguém puder me dar um link/dica/tutorial q possa me ajudar fico grato. Uso

efetuar a tarefa.
as implicações dessa troca.
