Vellore IT Associated had organized a day of 'Ubuntu Dawn' for its members and general public on Dec 21, 2008 at Hotel Aavana Inn, Vellore. More than forty people from Vellore, Aarani and other places of Vellore district got benefitted as a result of this event. Different modes of Ubuntu installation, Package handling techniques, Tamil features in Ubuntu, Fonts installation, Installation of addicted Windows application using Wine were among various topics covered at the event. While the proprietary accounting application Tally got installed and ran successfully using Wine, it was suggested by Ubuntu Tamil Team that, as a first Step, the resellers and users of Tally Solutions, compel the Tally Corporation to provide them a debian installable also(1). We expressed hope that alternatives are being looked at by the Community and soon a Free Software replacement would emerge for Tally. A handbook on Ubuntu Basics was also provided(2). Siva and Sri Ramadoss from Ubuntu Tamil Team conducted the event. We thank Sairam, other office bearers and members of Vellore IT association for providing us with this oppurtunity. That's what I too was thinking, the guy doesn't know much about the whole process. I was initially confused what he exactly wanted to say. BTW AFAIK grub's stage1 is installed on MBR which in turn loads stage2 on disk. This stage2 shows the list of OS to boot. MBR is too small to hold the whole grub. Even if we install Ubuntu on a removable drive, the MBR gets modified and points to stage2 on disk. How can the Windows disk get lost? He might be facing GRUB errors like GRUB Error 17 or 22 (don't remember the number),or getting the grub prompt. Probably he means he can't see Windows in the boot menu. This has happened to me everytime I've tried to install Ubuntu on my PC from scratch (had to reinstall a couple of times for several reasons). The trick lies in installing grub to the bootsector of the partition. Once you've done that, just load Windows, use Easy BCD and add an entry for Ubuntu to Vista/XP bootloader. I know some people may prefer to use Grub as their primary bootloader but I think Vista bootloader simply looks better. I just wish Ubuntu provided an automated way of doing this. For eg. Hello all, I am facing one issue with Ubuntu 8.10. Previously I was using Ubuntu 8.04 which used to work fine with my computer configuration. But when I tried to install 8.10 the installation window stops responding after some time. So I searched in net and found that Ubuntu 8.10 doesn't supports Display driver for VIA chip-set [ https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+question/53977]. Personally I think the competition concept is limiting in the idea that you just have one 60-second video. If I was commissioning such a thing I'd suggest that folks create a series of videos, bit like the I bet he drinks Carling Black Label campaign from the 80s. All pushing home the same message, that Linux should be a natural choice for productivity, creativity and so on... perhaps one centered around a band who is struggling to record music on a dodgy 4-track tape deck, another about a fella who's writing a book etc. etc. But, unlike David, I do quite fancy going to Japan so I will have to get my thinking hat on. Have, incidentally, e-mailed Amanda (as referenced on the page) to tell her that she has a 2008 in her competition details that shouldn't be there. I'm almost certainly a better proofreader than a video producer, but will give it a go! Well it iseasy to use, but keyboard quit small, so if you have to do a lot of typing why not go for the Dell Ubuntu laptop. hi everyone again sorry this is awfully complicated, but stick at it if you can be bothered :D I try to make sense of it at the end. following my previous question about compiz, I realised the issue was with space on my / partition - every time I tried to do something, it complained (which was when I noticed). I had only set aside 15gb for the /, and I'm a bit of a program whore :D so I managed to fill it up. So much so, that synaptic could not start because there was not enough space to write an index of installed packages! The only option I could think of was to move data to another partition (I have two more 15gb sections, originally set aside to play with other OSes) and remount it in the correct place. Looking through the different system folders, I discovered /var was almost the biggest, so moved that - by setting up a /var2 and mounting another partiton to it. I moved everything over, and remounted it over /var. The only issue was that none of the socket files would move. I figured I could move them over later on. I also felt comfortable with it because when the moved files were in the wrong place, an error popped up (about dpkg). When I remounted it, the error vanished, so I presumed it was ok. I edited /etc/fstab to mount /dev/sda6 to /var2 (not /var which was silly). Another weird thing - every time I removed anything through synaptic - however big or small - no space was ever freed up. I transferred 6.2gb of /var to the other partition, and there's only 5.4gb space left on /. After rebooting, it worked fine, but I wasn't happy with it being spread around, so I looked through synaptic to try and remove stuff so I could put /var back on the same partition as the rest of it. [Also playing around with xorg.conf, I ran the reconfigure command it gave me in the file (no manual editing!). This might have some relation to the next bit cos it links to the input devices.] But now it won't/can't start gdm or X because /var is all in /var2. It needs xauthority from /var/lib/gdm. I tried to re-edit fstab with vi, but I don't know how to use it and I have no help file - how do I save it? But even when I mount sda6 to /var, gdm starts and logs on, but nothing works apart from controlaltF1-F12 and Delete. And the mouse doesn't do anything. Another option I was going to try is repartitioning - through another [live] os. Delete a spare 15gb, move everything up and resize the / partition. But I'm scared of accidentally formatting something or wiping something off, and ending up with no boot flag. Err that probably made no sense, but if you can get anything out of that, my main questions are: 1 is repartitioning safe and preferable? 2 how do I use vi? 3 what are the commands to move /var2 back to /var (I think I know but don't want to make it worse) 4 would it be best to generate an install list from synaptic so I know what I've got, and do a clean install with a larger partition? My solution is to use nano ;) If you do ever find yourself stuck with vi though, you can save and exit with: Esc:wq 3 what are the commands to move /var2 back to /var (I think I know but don't want to make it worse) mv /var2 /var? [ubuntu-uk] Wireless woes
Just replaced wireless router and, for some reason, my Ubuntu won't see the network. It sees the neighbours' and it sees another that is somewhere or other in the vicinity but not mine. Windows XP on the same machine is fine, and this laptop I'm using to write this (Vista, bah!) sees it fine with high signal strength. Anybody any ideas why it would just be my network that is being ignored? It's currently unsecured, btw. Could that be a factor? Does Kismet see it? It's currently unsecured, btw. Could that be a factor? Unlikely. Also during a fresh install you can choose to have /var in a separate partition to /. You may need to use the manual partitioning option. You might also want to consider using Logical Volume Manager (LVM). You will need to read up on it, if you get to grips with it, it will allow you to resize logical volumes (file systems reside in a logical volume as opposed to a physical partition) much more easily. [ubuntu-uk] rhythm box and ubuntu 8.10

Hej!: I'm a brand new Ubuntu's last version user. I decided to install it to get involved into these Linux Plataform OS. I have an Intel processor: 2.13 GHz Memory: 750 Mb 64 Mb video card I have Windows XP into one of my HD, I have 2 of them, 80 Gb each one. I installed Ubuntu in the empty one HD. From an ISO image I had downloaded from Ubuntu's Official Page. After having downloaded the image, I checked it by comparing it by reading the hashes, it matched succesfully!. Then I burned it up!, I installed by using a Cd. The installation was completely succesfull. But...when I rebooted my PC (the Cd was previously removed), when i picked up Ubuntu as my OS at starting up...there a message like (initramfs) and a space waiting for me to enter a command. Why? What did it happen? Does always Ubuntu behave this way? Does it have graphic interface??? No? I trusted Ubuntu, I mean I wanted a safe OS, but I need some help, so please...reply me soonn. Sounds like your install might have been unsuccessful. Try re-installing again. [Ubuntu-BR] Driver SiS para o Intrepid
Bom dia, pessoas. Quem usa, sabe o problema que é ter um SiS 771/761 rodando a 1280x800 no Hardy -- principalmente na execução de vídeos, totalmente bugado. Mas ainda se tinha a opção do VESA, ajustando via displayconfig-gtk, para 1280x768 -- feio, mas melhor que 800x600. Mas como tudo que é ruim pode piorar, resolveram tirar o displayconfig-gtk. O xorg.conf está bem esotérico (PRINCIPALMENTE no Kubuntu, onde ele está vazio!) e, como é um sistema novo, nada na rede. Solução? Downgrade. Ontem à noite resolvi dar mais uma chance ao Intrépido no meu possante laptop CCE. Procurei na rede e encontrei este driver[1] que é definitivamente a salvação da lavoura! Eu mesmo o estou disponibilizando, porque fiz a %#$*!@ de não marcar a discussão em ubuntuforums; abaixo descrevo como instalá-lo: 1. Remova qualquer menção a drivers no xorg.conf com sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg 2. Baixe e instale o driver 3. Abra o xorg.conf com gksu gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf e insira a linha Driver sis671 dentro de Section Device 4. Reinicie o X, fechando a seção ou con Ctrl+Alt+Backspace Depois, é só ser feliz. Só não tem aceleração; então nada de Compiz, mas dá para usar a composição nativa do metacity. Quero saber se posso colocar esse tuto como artigo no wiki, seria interessante disponibilizar isto para um número maior de usuários. Tentei todos os testes aqui indicado mais o meu VirtualBox esta
apresentando esse erro:
The VirtualBox support driver which is running is from a different
version of VirtualBox. You can correct this by stopping all running
instances of VirtualBox and reinstalling the software..

Posso lhe dar meu depoimento, depois de instalar o intrepid e depois atualiza-lo (acho que uns 150M de download extra) ele funciona muito melhor que a versão anterior. O kernel é novo e traz muitas coisas boas, ao mudar de versão de kernel, ele tá recompilando o modulos da versão anterior sem eu fazer nada, muito bacana. Quanto a rede, ele segura até demais. Aqui quando tenho que trocar wifi por cabo, no 4.01 bastava tocar numa conexao wifi disponivel ele fazia a troca numa boa fio-wifi numa voa, agora ele continua a trocar, mas fica se segurando no fio e tenho que manualmente ir ate o icone na bandeja do NM e setar o status para inativo e depois ativo, sem isso ele parece ficar com a conexao fio que ja foi derrubada mais continua usando. Pois é ... isso que digo... ele até fica com as configurações, mas você tem que ficar setando no icone manualmente... No meu caso como uso IP fixo, quando eu altero minha configuração para IP fixo e reinicio a maquina ele cria outra configuracao padrao automatica, ou seja fica com duas configuracoes... e seta a que ele criou como default ignorando a minha, e eu tenho que ir lá manualmente e escolher a minha... e nisso a internet demora a funcionar por ele tem que atualizar os dns e a fins Isso tenho que fazer toda vez que ligo a maquina, aí fica ruim :( Vejo que o pessoal nao reclama porque não usam IP fixo, pois no IP automatico ele funciona numa boa. Olá. Procura no google pelo código do erro. Eu tive esse problema e
passei por umas 3 páginas pra conseguir resolver. Ae qd refiz o
sistema,
depois de um tempo, instalei de primeira sem precisar arrumar nada (vai
entender...)

Uso o DreaMule que, apesar de não ser nativo, pode ser usado sem
maiores problemas no Linux via Wine. Mas o aMule está muito bom na
conexão e baixamento de arquivos, sendo sempre minha segunda opção.

Cara, no site da ATI eu encontrei sim o driver for windows! Mas como essa maquina nao tem Duall-Boot (na verdade, só o notebook de minha esposa ainda tem windows) aí não precisei dele. Bom dia Gustavo! Pessoalmente uso o aMule (versão linux do eMule), estou muito satisfeito com ele. Mas para usa-lo e não dar low id, vc tem que abrir as portas de comunicação que o aMule usa: 4662, 4672 e 5000 TCP no seu modem se não fica um lixo. Bem, vamos a um passo-a-passo do que eu fiz: 1) listei o dispositivo usb (web cam) através do comando lsusb: saída: http://paste.ubuntu.com/90443/ 2) realizei uma busca no Google pela instalação deste dispositivo. Encontrei suporte neste site: http://www.64bitjungle.com/tech/microdia-webcam-0c54-experimental-drivers-installation-and-testing-part-1/ 3) segui todos os passos e para minha decepção, ao executar o último comando, ocorre o seguinte erro: saída: http://paste.ubuntu.com/90466/ Guilherme, este comando não é de configuração, é o mplayer sendo usado para visualizar a webcam. Para chegar a este comando, você deve já estar com ela configurada. Talvez seja o caso de refazer o tutorial e postar a saída do comando anterior. Aliás, não consegui abrir o tutorial aqui. Tenho uma microdia também, mas não instalei. Segui as instruções do blog de um amigo meu: http://silveiraneto.net/2008/05/20/camera-microdia-no-ubuntu-804/ ALguém conhece alguma maneira de como instalar a web cam, já que ela foi reconhecida pelo sistema? apresentando esse erro:
The VirtualBox support driver which is running is from a different
version of VirtualBox. You can correct this by stopping all running
instances of VirtualBox and reinstalling the software..
VBox status code: -1912 (VERR_VM_DRIVER_VERSION_MISMATCH).

Mano, eu prefiro utilizar o frostwire, até então funciona muito bem e
não apresentou qualquer problema. É idêntico ao limewire, mas muito mais
estável.
Creio que não está nos repositórios, tem que baixar o deb e instalar.

Nada a fazer, ele está pronto para uso.
Quanto a baixar albuns completos só se estiverem disponiveis, já ví
alguns mas nem pensei em tentar por causa de minha excelente banda Velox
que raramente chega aos 22kbs de download :)

Pessoal, estou com problemas para iniciar uma máquina virtual no
VirtualBox, quando tento ligar a máquina virtual, dá a seguinte
mensagem de erro:
Failed to load VMMR0.r0.
VBox status code: -8 (VERR_NO_MEMORY).
Código de Resultado: NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005)

Alguem sabe como fazer para o VirtualBox iniciar?

Olá Rafael,
No kernel 2.6.24-19-Generic ele esta rodando normalmente, so que quando
eu vou para o kernel mais novo ele mostra a mensagem de erro, mais hoje
à noite vou copiar o arquivo que vc passo e desinstalar e instalar
novamente o VirtuaBox pra ver se vai funcionar.

Tentei todos os testes aqui indicado mais o meu VirtualBox esta
apresentando esse erro:
The VirtualBox support driver which is running is from a different
version of VirtualBox. You can correct this by stopping all running
instances of VirtualBox and reinstalling the software..
VBox status code: -1912 (VERR_VM_DRIVER_VERSION_MISMATCH).

passei por umas 3 páginas pra conseguir resolver. Ae qd refiz o
sistema,
depois de um tempo, instalei de primeira sem precisar arrumar nada (vai
entender...)

Alex talvez seu problema se resolva rodando o seguinte comando.
sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup
Se acontecer algum erro, execute os seguintes comandos:
sudo apt-get install module-assistant
sudo module-assistant prepare
e novamente
sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup
Com isso ele recompila o modulo do kernel.

Tenta conectar a pendrive somente depois de estar com o Windows carregado.
Se não der certo, retorna ao Ubuntu, conecta a pendrive e carrega a VM.
No menu da VM verifica se está mostrando a pendrive. Na minha VM aparece
no menu o item Kingston para ativar ou desativar.

Prezados Ubunteiros, Não consigo executar o blender através do menu aplicações, alias ele nunca funcionou muito bem. O que posso fazer pra reinstalar ou corrigir o problema. Uma dica para pelo menos tentar descobrir o que está acontecendo é executar via terminal. Se estiver dando um erro, provavelmente conseguirá identificar. Testei a ultima versao do kubuntu a 8.10... Pra quem estiver pensando em baixa-la Eu pelo menos não achei boa não... Bem pesada... No meu notebook a tela fica piscando... O Dolphin gerenciador de arquivos é horrivel complicado e pesado... muita coisa pra quem precisa de um simples gerenciadror de arquivos A resoluçao das fontes nao ficaram boas pelo menos no lcd do meu not, mesmo configurando como no Ubuntu Muitas coisas ainda estao em ingles... ou seja ainda está uma mistureba :) O novo menu estilo windows vista, veio pra complicar... pois voce tem que ficar navegando em setas de um lado pro outro ao inves de ser slip como o menu classico do Ubuntu (e windows antigos) dessa forma vc perde tempo. Eu pelo menos achei péssimo o novo menu do Vista... apesar de ser bonito... mas que adianta ser bonito mas nao utilizavel... Bem... se quiser mesmo assim usar o KDE 4.x pode deixar no estilo menu Antigo... mas mesmo assim ainda vai estranhar o Dolphin... Testei tambem o Kurunim-NG 8.06... olha o pessoal do Kurumin tem muito bom gosto :) Versão muito estavel... interface agradavel... vem com o KDE 3.4.1 que ainda era leve :) Pelo que li na materia deles a intencao é justamente essa, uma versao leve e estavel (estao cumprindo com o objetivo) Ou seja uma ótima pedida pra quem gosta do KDE Eu gostava e até preferia o KDE mas depois da versao cheia de firula no KDE4 e o Dolphin... puts... muito ruim Outra coisa tambem é que o Kurumin-ng 8.06 foi escrito encima do Ubuntu.. ou seja... o bom gosto dos desenvolvedores com a solidez desta grande versao Ubuntu Muito boa pedida... Mas como conservador que sou, vou continuar com Meu Ubuntu 8.04.1 x Gnome que ainda se mostrou a mais estavel e robusta versão desktop colocada pela Canonical :) Pelo menos nas minhas máquinas Abracos... [Ubuntu-BR] Instalação do BrOffice 3
Boa Tarde Pessoal to com problemas para instalar o broffice no meu ubuntu. Primeiramente fui la em aplicativos--adicionar/remover e removi o openoffice, em seguida baixei os pacotes de instalação do broffice para debiam, descompactei eles. Entrei no terminal e acessei a pasta DEBS e instalei com o seguinte comando dpkg -i *.deb ( estou citando o comando pois sou novato e posso ter cometido algum erro ) passou a instalação se nenhuma mensagem de erro, em seguida fui instalar os atalhos entrei na pasta desktop-integration e tentei instalar com o seguinte comando dpkg -i *.deb mas ele esta retornando o seginte erro: dpkg: sobre broffice.org3.0-debian-menus_3.0-9354_all.deb contendo broffice.org-debian-menus: openoffice.org-core conflita com openoffice.org-unbundled broffice.org-debian-menus fornece openoffice.org-unbundled e está para ser instalado. dpkg: erro processando broffice.org3.0-debian-menus_3.0-9354_all.deb (--install): pacotes conflitantes - não instalando broffice.org-debian-menus Erros foram encontrados durante o processamento de: broffice.org3.0-debian-menus_3.0-9354_all.deb Só que ja desistalei todos os pacotes do openoffice pelo adicionar/remover e continua a mesma coisa, ja entrei na pasta /opt e removi a pasta openoffice e mesmo asism continua com este conflito entre as versoes. Tenho pouco conhecimento com este mundo linux e gostaria da ajuda de vc`s. Compartilho com você sobre o KDE 4. Eles estão perdendo a noção do significado GNU. O que significava NÃO UNIX no meu entendimento deve prevalecer como NÃO WINDOWS! Não creio que funcione o Nokia PC Suite não. Se alguém conseguir poste aí.
Pra funcionar o USB precisa ativar, não lembro como faz, mas no google tá
cheio de tutoriais.

Tenta conectar a pendrive somente depois de estar com o Windows carregado.
Se não der certo, retorna ao Ubuntu, conecta a pendrive e carrega a VM.
No menu da VM verifica se está mostrando a pendrive. Na minha VM aparece
no menu o item Kingston para ativar ou desativar.

Tentei todos os testes aqui indicado mais o meu VirtualBox esta
apresentando esse erro:

Hello: I am confused about how I'm Linux is going to sell anything to anyone, maybe you should consider using the mascot Tux the Penguin is you are going to produce a copycat commercial in the first place. I'm a Penguin fist of all is that lot more fun and would be far more effective, if the intent is to actually get people that are using Windows to consider switching to Linux. Instead of coming off as a third rate alternative to two inferior software products with larger ad spends, let make Linux look like the what it is the first rate product. Peace Mike F. The way I read it there is no _requirement_ for it to be I'm Linux... While you may be inspired by the Apple or Microsoft commercials, it's not a requirement to parody or make reference to them. I certainly wouldn't make anything that makes reference to them as the Mac ads are old and the Microsoft ones are a poor imitation (of an old concept), so what would that make a second generation copy? I dunno if I agree with you there Al, I think that it might be a good idea to capitalise on the 'I'm a PC' adverts that MS is currently spending millions of dollars on forcing down our necks. I guess if MS is good at anything, they're good at advertising/sales/promotion. I think coming back with a challenge to that ad format helps create an association with Linux being a 'big player' operating system along with Microsoft Windows (and of course Apple Macintosh). Subverting the MS message delivered via this advertising method would be one way of using the 'I'm a PC' message against them. If MS is spending a great deal of money on building this brand image, it'd be interesting to try to turn their brand 'equity' if you like, against them. Cue Kung Foo phrase! Of course it's got to be clever though, as you rightly say we don't just want a second generation poor imitation. Just my two penneth worth! От типа видеокарты это не зависит ибо на разных компьютерах одно и тоже. Организация библиотеки
Здравствуйте! Интересует решения как организовать свою собственную электронную локальную библиотеку. С возможностью поиска по ключевым фразам. В сети ничего путного не нашел кроме пары пакетов для библиографии. В голове вертится только 1 мысля. Поднять nginx и на нем свой маленький локальный интернет,периодически натравливая локальный поисковик. Браузер с плагинами хорошо хавает как .pdf, так и djvu.Единственное неслышал про возможность индексации таких документов. Во общем мысля понятна. Минусы для ноута поднятие еще одного сервиса хавающего ресурсы и использование огнелиса(из за плагинов),также прожорливого.необходимость большего пространства на винте,так как придется все распаковать а часть перевести в html Меня интересует есть ли другие решения,с меньшим телодвижением и с большей функциональностью.Во общем хотелось бы что то типа библиографического KBibTex,но для библиотеки,чтоб все в одной проге и поиск и индексация,перекодировка, распаковка,запаковка и при необходимости отправка на сервер или на почту,для средств обмена. -- С уважением Валерий.
