[ubuntu-art] [Breathe] Wine icon

2009-03-26 Thread Steve Dodier

Hello,

Do you actually plan on using a Windows logo for the wine icon ? That's
really, as a wine user, the last thing I'd like to see. I'd really go crazy if
i had to see a Windows logo each time i open my apps menu. The glass of Wine
might not be a terrible thing, but it's Wine's branding, and it's infinitely
nicer than the logo of an OS i really can't bear, imho.

Cordially, SD.

I agree, I don't want to see the windows logo either.
I like the wine glass in the icon set I'm currently using (gnome-colors),
I'm not really sure what the problem is?

[ubuntu-art] New Wave metacity on Jaunty

Hello everybody,

As I see on many screenshot the font sizes in jaunty are very small thus
making the metacity look very ugly. Does anybody knows a way to fix this?

Hold on, fellas. There has been some discussion about what icon to use
there, and I've argued that something resembling the Windows icon would be
best. Here is why I think so: a menu icon should make you think of what that
menu will show, to ease navigation. A glass of wine only says Windows
programs to somebody who is familiar with the Wine project and gets the
joke. New users will have no way of knowing what that menu does without
guess-and-check. So, an icon which makes them think Windows would be the
better option.

That being said, the fact that a few (talking 2 or 3 here) of us on the art
mailing list have expressed that opinion does not come close to meaning that
it's going to happen. If it did happen, it wouldn't be until Karmic Koala,
and there would be plenty of time for discussion first. We haven't even seen
any mockups of what the new icon might look like, and we definitely wouldn't
use an actual Windows logo, since that would be way non-free.

Please feel free to be a part of this discussion.

Cheers,
Ryan

A windows-flag is visually better for all theme-colours (bright and
dark), but Wine *is* a glass with liquid. Something else is too
radikal. :) So it *must* be a glass with wine ...

Hey what happens with the windows-flag ... so there are Windows-Apps

I'm not sure whether to agree. Most users didn't assemble their computers
and probably couldn't pick a sound card out of a lineup. However, most users
probably wouldn't be looking through their devices menu to find the sound
card icon, either.

If it comes down to cuteness, the music note wins because it's a cute idea.
If it comes down to realism, well, the sound card doesn't actually make any
sound, so the note would be gone.

I think a realistic card combined with a well rendered note would be
perfectly acceptable. The submission isn't far off. The flag of the note
should be changed to a more traditional shape.

Other possibilities would be to show a note, an iconic speaker or a sine
wave as graphic printed on the board.

Or to concentrate on the presence of i/o ports, but it would be tricky
to make that clear.

Now while I'm not totally against dumping the WINE glass (the win logo

[ubuntu-art] [Breathe] Notes/Reminders to artists

2009-03-26 Thread Cory K.
Now that we have a few more people doing submissions I thought I'd take
this time to give a few notes on some things I've seen and to keep in mind.

* Please remove the Instructions and Palette layers from
  submissions. This saves filesize.
* Vacuum Defs is very important. (FileVacuum Defs) It will remove
alot of cruft that will also save on filesize. I had one today
  that went from 1.2MB234KB
* Make sure you *don't* delete the plate layer. This happens from
time to time and the layer is very important to rendering the icons.
* Align your icons in the same spot over each plate size. Some
submissions have 1 icon on the far fight then another size on the
  right or center.
* *Don't* add additional metadata to the files. Naming objects and
such. I have 1 icon giving issue atm because of this. Only change
the layer name according to the path/name the icon should be.
* Before submitting please make sure things are on their proper
layers and the plate layer is hidden. In the end, you should
  only have 2 layers.

That's about it. :)

I'll be doing a major cleanup on the Submissions page soon and uploading
6 or so icons to BZR today.

Have fun!

Ok. I'll make a command decision here and say the icon for this *must*
be a wine glass similar to the one upstream WINE ships. Regardless of
what people think the transparent glass (it could always have some white
tint to it or something) will look like on darker menus.

There are details in here that to me are a good mix between Human and

upward orange glow at the bottom of the folder. As well as the dots on
the back of the folder. Orange outer color and light inside.

This is not to say this icon is permanent, but the longer you wait with
a new submission the harder it will be to turn back (as the folder is
the basis for many icons) and change my mind. ;) *Many* people have
liked it. Less have not. So I'm not just gonna switch it whenever

As for *style* I didn't see it as old or new. Didn't matter here. :) For
me, the choice came down to the fact that your submission was blurry by
comparison to the rest of the set.

However, any new submissions along with real-world/in use (screenshots
would work) evidence that the current loop is to small in the cases you
site will be greatly appreciated.

 Conclusion:

Would be nice the *community* here votes their favourite, so we have two
different kinds for system-search (old-style or modern) made. Would be
really nice to know how the voting is. :)

Voting is crap. We put it up. Discuss. Move on. (but still open to
discussion later)

 copied
it to use for a VirtualMachine link on my desktop:

 http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Boot+Camp+Logo+SVG?content=56439

Obviously it's not that popular ;) but I thought maybe this could be an
  idea starter.. :)

That inspired me to make this. It is not yet in the style of Breathe, but
 it
is already better than the Wine icon IMO.

Generally, I like it, but this is where my upstream branding worries
 come into play.

Ok. I'll make a command decision here and say the icon for this *must*
be a wine glass similar to the one upstream WINE ships. Regardless of
what people think the transparent glass (it could always have some white
tint to it or something) will look like on darker menus.

 -Cory K.

You should note companies are required by law to protect their IP,
Trademarks, and other marks or they risk forfeiting them.

So using the wavy Window logo would definitely be copyright infringement
as would using the colors from it in the style shown above. But if you are
trying to show a relationship to the Window's OS, creating a generic window
icon with Ubuntu themed colors would be well within your rights because it
is a parody.

Microsoft doesn't hold a copyright on all icons that look like windows just
like Apple doesn't have a copyright on all icons that look like apples.

Icons are used to express ideas, actions, and they should be immediately
recognizable. Ubuntu is marketed as a Linux distro for everyone and no one
new to Linux will know that the program they want is next to the Wine glass.
And when they figure it out, they'll still be wondering why it's a wine
glass.

They will, however, immediately recognize the window icon and relate it to
the Start button and know that's where their programs are.

Besides if Apple was in the wrong Microsoft wouldn't have missed the chance
to roast them.

The issue isn't really with recognition. The issue as Cory has stated is
that the Developers/designers of wine, have made the decision to
represent their solution with a wine glass. We wouldn't want to
redesign their logo for them. If Firefox extensions had their own
category we wouldn't want to redesign the Firefox logo either, it would
be some representation similar to the current Firefox branded logo.

thank's. but i think if i remove de music note, de user don't understand

Icons are metaphors. By removing the music note you cripple the metaphor and
now the icon looks like a generic PCI card.

For all we know that could be an icon for all hardware devices, a network
card, anything. The sound card makes it clear to computer savvy users, and
non-technically inclined people will relate the piece of hardware and the
music note and know that that must be part of the computer related to sound.
So if their having sound problems, that's were they'd look.

Go into Sound Preferences and change the Audio Conferencing options:

Set Sound playback to PulseAudio Sound Server

Set Sound capture to PulseAudio Sound Server

And, under Default Mixer Tracks option:

Set the Device to HDA Intel (Alsa Mixer)

Some other combinations may work as well or better, but this combination
worked for me on two different Aspires. Sound Recorder and Audacity are both
now able to record in the UNR beta.

 Thanks for your help!

Re: [ubuntu-in] Graphic driver issue

2009-03-26 Thread Rohit V Bhute
Ubuntu (and all other Linux distros) install a bare minimum set of
hardware drivers guaranteed to make it work on a range of hardware at
first run - advantage of Freedom - it costs nothing to bundle an already
available driver on a Linux CD (or DVD, as is becoming more frequent).

I replaced an Asus mainboard having Nvidia graphics with a Gigabyte
mainboard having Ati graphics - Ubuntu booted up and asked about Ati
restricted drivers. Thats it! The vendor was gaping like a fish - on
Windows, this would have entailed at least a low resolution login, with
lots of new devices found and what not.

 ethernet are onboard.

My only comment - apart from to agree with those who commend that you
use the LTS version - would be this: I would never buy a Celeron and I
tell everyone, friends and clients, to avoid them. They are nasty,
crippled devices and anything with a Celery in it is probably
 rubbish, in my not-at-all-humble opinion.

I'd rather have a cheap low-end but full-spec AMD or Via chip than a
Celeron. Yes, I know it's possible to replace a Celeron with a
full-spec chip, but almost nobody ever does it's almost never an
 economical upgrade.

Actually the dual core Celerons are pretty quick. They are based on the
Core 2 Duo core with just a smaller cache. To be honest I would presume
that a system for about £200 would not be aimed at a power user and with
some people finding that a single core Atom at 1.6GHz does the job
(heck, a Duron 1400 with 512MB Ram I built the other day is fine for web
browsing) then a Celeron Dual Core would probably be fine.

Saying that though, I'd rather have a Core 2 based Celeron Dual Core or
Pentium Dual Core rather than the older Pentium 4 Prescott based Celeron
D (my kids PC has one in and while it's fine for what they want and
pretty quick at 3.33GHz it's really power hungry and runs hot).

I do agree about the AMD chips though, if you can get one cheap enough
and a decent AM2+ board then you could at a later date drop in an AM2
(and I believe AM3) Phenom II onto the board (although for best
performance you really need a board which can support the faster HT
speeds of the Phenom which some of the cheaper AM2+ boards don't support).

PCM is Pulse Code Modulation, the main method for describing sound
samples. Imagine plotting a sound wave on a chart, then every N

that point. The points are called pulses and the measurements are
called codes.

PCM is used for all sampled sound, which these days is almost all played
back sound from a PC. Depending on the implementation, MIDI GM sounds
may or may not be controlled via PCM. For example, a card which
implements MIDI GM sounds in software will almost certainly use PCM,
whereas a card which implements MIDI GM sounds in hardware might not.

In the past, that opinion was fairly valid. Now, the celerons are
actually quite speedy little chips, espescially for an Ubuntu box that
is going to run web/openoffice/music all day. As for recommending a
Via over the current (Dual core) celerons, they are quite a long way
behind in performance terms, and not really any cheaper.

I am aware that the Via Nano is not as powerful, although it compares
very well to the Intel Atom, but then, the Nano uses a *lot* less
power than a Celeron so the overall running cost would be somewhat
 lower.

Actually, tests done by Tom's Hardware Guide suggest that overall the
Core 2 is a more efficient chip than the Atom. It's just a case of
paring it with the right hardware.

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/intel-atom-efficiency,2069.html
But still, seriously object to the pricing model of producing crippled
chips with tiny L2 caches and selling them cheap. If they can make a
profit on the crippled model, they could make one on selling the
premium product with the full-sized cache for a lot less. There is a
balance to be had, and that balancing point is called a fair price.
Instead, we get cheap crippled chips - the Celerons, Pentium chips,
AMD's old Durons and so on - and price-inflated professional or
 performance chips for power users.

From what I understand these 'crippled' chips are basically the higher
end chips which don't at full spec, for instance a Celeron Dual Core
could well be a Core 2 Duo which a section of cache on doesn't work.
Rather than just chuck the chip away they disable some of the cache and
sell it on as a cheaper part. AMD do the same with the Phenom X3 (and
newer Phenom core based Athlon X2's) where they disable a faulty core
and sell them as a slightly cheaper chip. To be honest considering what
sort of financial state AMD are in at the moment they need to do this to
recoup some of the costs and pay off some of the debts.

There is also the fact that if you're so inclined it is possible to
overclock some of these chips (especially the Celeron Dual Core and
Pentium Dual Core) to much faster speeds. I managed to get about 3GHz
from my 1.8GHz Pentium Dual Core, sods law though the power saving
driver in Linux clocked it back to it's original speed.
This is a deliberate pricing model; in the industry, it's called
something like segmented marketing and catching the low end. I call it
screwing your customers. Which is one reason I prefer to deal with
companies who don't play those games. The AMD tactic of selling last
year's model cheap and calling it a Sempron or something was much
more honest and fair, and indeed I am typing on an AMD Athlon box now.

Technically last year's model would be the Athlon X2 which they are
still selling as an Athlon X2, albeit fairly cheap although I'm yet to
see any Sempron X2's in the shops (IIRC they do sell them in very small
quantities overseas).
Alas, since their 64-bit leap, AMD have no new tricks to pull and the
CPU high end now belongs completely to Intel. It's a damned shame.

Actually the Phenom II is starting to claw back some of the
performance. Considering if you have an AM2+ board you can drop in a
Phenom II X4 straight onto the board that is a pretty good performance
upgrade especially compared to the new Core i7 which needs a new board
and DDR3 memory (and if I'm correct they are replacing the socket on the
Core i7 again later on this year). If you were to stick an AM3 CPU on
an AM2+ board then you have extra future proofing as you can upgrade to
an AM3 board and DDR3 memory when the prices come down.

However they still struggle with many basic questions. But they are

not very likely to yet be users of discussion forums such as this one.
Some are very keen to escape from windows.

What comes to my mind is that on occasions when I have provided a pre

occasional detailed support from me which is of great value, more than
the machine itself. These friends are not people who would be
comfortable with, say, this list. But they would probably pay for
suitable personal support over time.

If you are selling hardware with known linux suitability then well
seasoned users like myself might be certainly interested, just to know
that certain hardware is ubuntu suitable and get some information and
subsequent (list based?) support hopefully.

However, I would be a very different type of customer to the elderly
lady I met on a cruise up the norwegian coast who was set on buying an
Asus eee (901 I think) after seeing them in a newspaper report, and
she would probably never want to install anything herself.

As you say, if you intend to compete on hardware costs alone there is
a lot of competition. Less competition and more welcomed market
possibly if you consider certain levels of information/support.

[ubuntu-uk] Squid proxy box with serious IPv6 DNS problem...

2009-03-26 Thread LeeGroups
Chaps...

Over the last couple of days I've been trying to build a proxy box for a
load of Windows PCs, using Squid on Ubuntu server 8.04.
I've had a few problems with it due to the wild/wacky filtered internet
connection we have there, but now I've hit a massive brick wall...

Using an upstream proxy config Apt can get out to the internet fine,
download and update the OS.

However, Squid can't resolve any DNS loopups... it just fails a few
minutes after loading.

Doing a wget of a known file like the Google index page also fails with
a unresolved DNS error.

However, (after much much much reading) using the -4 option of wget, to
force it to use IPv4, it works fine, resolves the Google address and
downloads the index page and saves it.

I've blacklisted the IPv6 service, but wget (and Squid) still doesn't
work without the -4 option, so I guess bits of IPv6 are still hiding
there somewhere

My question is - How do I fix this bloomin' thing? I've been googling
for hours with only the -4 option to show for it... and I really need to
get this this working for Friday afternoon... Otherwise bad Windows
things may happen...

I think from the description the squid thing is actually a red herring.
(to mix a fishy metaphore). It sounds like your proxy server is not
reliably resolving DNS when using IPV6. You will probably see this
problem if you run firefox on the server.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/netcfg/+bug/24828

not sure how you turned off IPV6, one way is to edit
/ /etc/modprobe.d/aliases
and edit it to have this line:
/alias net-pf-10 off ipv6

a better solution would be to fix the actual problem, one way might be
to point your proxy at openDNS which works fine with v6. I suspect the
DHCP server is pointing your box at a bad router for DNS queries.

shrug, shrug.

 3. Any idea how often the mirror is updated? The beta came out

Here is the sync information:
http://mirror.internode.on.net/pub/ubuntu/ubuntu/project/trace/

Gives time and dates of hosts the mirror was synced from.

Its always seemed a bit... manual to me. Didn't seem to be updated
regularly (or thoroughly) enough to be automatic. Recently a lot of
the archive breakage has disappeared though, so that is probably changed
now.

Figured someone on the list may have an idea, if not I'll log a

I suggest a support ticket whatever you get back here (especially if

Translating Xubuntu docs

2009-03-26 Thread Jim Campbell
Hi All,

I have refreshed the .pot files that are included as part of the
documentation, and have committed those .pot file refreshes to my bzr
branch, but in examining the translations page of Xubuntu docs, it concerns
me that it looks like people are translating older versions of the
documentation. Surely it seems as though I have missed a step, but I'm
afraid that trying to navigate the myriad of launchpad / rosetta translation
pages is a bit on the confusing side.

Any issues may be due to the fact that I have been using the
xubuntu-jaunty-yelpversion branch (which was basically me starting with
current Ubuntu docs, and then modifying them to suit Xubuntu), and had
retired the xubuntu-jaunty branch.

Here is the url to the translations page that I was referencing, though:
https://translations.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/jaunty/+source/xubuntu-docs
Please pardon my ignorance, but I just want to make sure that translators
aren't attempting to update outdated documentation, and that end-users get
the most updated documentation possible. Thanks very much.

Re: Translating Xubuntu docs

2009-03-26 Thread Timo Jyrinki
2009/3/26 Jim Campbell jwcampb...@ubuntu.com:
I have refreshed the .pot files that are included as part of the
documentation, and have committed those .pot file refreshes to my bzr
branch, but in examining the translations page of Xubuntu docs, it concerns
me that it looks like people are translating older versions of the
 documentation.

The translations at Launchpad / Rosetta are only updated when you
upload a version of xubuntu-docs package with updated .pot files
included in the source to the Ubuntu archive. Then the build system
rips off the .pot file and .po file, and uploads those to Rosetta. In
case of UI:s, the PO file translations then automatically come as part
of language packs, but for documentation the documentation maintainer
has to manually download the translations from Rosetta (there should
be an option to translate all languages at once, if you have
sufficient privileges at Launchpad) and upload again new package to
the archive with the translations included.

So if xubuntu-docs source is now ok, it should be uploaded to the
archive as a package. Then on or after 9th of April, which is the
NonLanguagePackTranslationDeadline, translations should be fetched
from Rosetta, translated XML files should be updated in the source
with the new PO files and a new xubuntu-docs with all translations
included should be done. If you can automate this well enough, the
translators could benefit of download PO files - upload .deb cycles
also before the deadline, since unfortunately testing documentation in
real use is not within every translator's capabilities. (also it would
be good practice in general so that it can be found if there is
anything wrong with bringing the translations into use)

The ubuntu-docs maintainer(s) have also experienced in the past that
if the translators make typos in the XML tags, it may bring additional
work to the maintainer when a fully translated upload is prepared.

Exemplificando, tipo: 2009mails01, 2009mails02, arquivos compactados

consultar esses arquivos esporadicamente.

http://www.guiadopc.com.br/dicas-e-tutoriais/3132/manual-completo-do-ubuntu-804-em-pdf.html
Para o OpenOffice, a brOffice disponibiliza vários tutoriais para uso
dos aplicativos no link abaixo:
http://www.broffice.org/doc/tutoriais

Salles (Nethell) Ubuntu User 24389

 1. Visão Geral de Hardware e Software
 2. Escrevendo Textos com o BrOffice - Writer
 3. Fazendo contas com o BrOffice - Calc
 2. A Internet
 4. Utilizando GNU/Linux e GNOME
 7. Comparação de Sistemas Operacionais
O Foco do curso é eles saberem criarem documentos de texto/planilha,
 criar e
mover arquivos, o básico para poderem utilizar o computador.

 Prezado Gabriel,

 http://www.guiadopc.com.br/dicas-e-tutoriais/3132/manual-completo-do-ubuntu-804-em-pdf.html
Para o OpenOffice, a brOffice disponibiliza vários tutoriais para uso
 dos aplicativos no link abaixo:
 http://www.broffice.org/doc/tutoriais

No item mailto selecione o programa desejado, no caso o Thunderbird.
No meu caso uso o Evolution para a ação mailto. Normalmente abre a

Evolution.

   Johnson Dawson

Johnson,

/usr/bin/thunderbird

 Paulo,

Eu prefiro usar o GRsync (você acha via Synaptic).
