[ubuntu-x] Bug #446632 - SIGSEGV in GPU_state_init()
On systems with ATI cards the 3D raytracer Blender segfaults when trying to display the first screen, see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mesa/+bug/446632 Backtraces located the problem in the mesa package. By installing various binary packages of mesa that were created during the release of Karmic I determined the last good version of mesa is 7.6.0~git20090817.7c422387-0ubuntu8 The next available one (7.6.0-1ubuntu1) produces the above mentioned segfault. Geir Ove asked for a git-bisect to determine the patch responsible. If I understand this process correctly, this is a binary search in a git-tree between the last known good and the first bad snapshot. But can anyone tell me the URL of that particular git repository? I presume that this is an Ubuntu repo. And I assume that there is a way to find out which commit-ids relate to the above mentioned builds... Hi Friends, Some weeks back i wrote about the idea of 'maybe' doing something to promote Ubuntu (Linux / FLOSS etc). One of the ideas is put down below: *** The Ubuntu India 2010 Calendar The new year (2010) is already upon us - The calendar may or may not strictly happen before the new year but i think we have a margin that runs into January. The idea of the calendar it to have something physical that we can give out, individually, to folks who we would like to impress, with the idea of Ubuntu, Linux, FLOSS CONTENTS OF THE CALENDAR - 1. The calendar could contain art work, photographs etc drawn from orginal content - this would form the main visuals of the calendar. The underlying theme of the visual content should be to highlight a key feature of the OS, or how it works or what makes it special. Each Main Visual should have a short note on what the visual is about - how it was made and what makes it special. 2. Each main visual could be accompanied by a smaller visual with again a short text of this visual is about - this is more information - to get people familiar with people and software. The idea is to get the various facets of Ubuntu, Linux , FLOSS, to become common knowledge. IDEAS - We need a theme (and slogan) for each month - from this we could determine the main content and the smaller or tiled content (the numbering below is so that we have 12 ideas and they are not necessarily given month wise) Month 1 - About Ubuntu - The philosophy - what it is about and the different releases so far (from warty warthog) - the main image with the rest of the past distros as smaller tiled images. Month 2 - About Linux and Tux the logo - and about Linus Torvalds and Richard Stallman Month 3 - Prominent open source, creative commons licensed sites / software (wikipedia, wordpress - (m)any others ) Months 4 (April) - Since its the month of the release - we could image the release version Lucid Lynx - and describe the LTS and we can have the Mark Shuttleworth featured Month 5 - Popular personal accessories / Peripehrals that work on Ubuntu , and the software that runs them. Hi! The calendar is a very good idea indeed :). Here's what I think of some of the points: Ideas: The current set of ideas is a good start (it's really good, but I guess, we can brainstorm a little more). A wiki page with the ideas being discussed is the best way to go forward. Mailing lists can get confusing at times when discussing ideas, and I'm not sure if everyone will be able to access IRC (people like me, who are behind a firewalled network). A Customized DVD / CD - of Ubuntu - we could get the default one from Ubuntu but what if we could remaster a DVD / CD which has all the software used and includes the original calendar file as well in the templates / or some other section. (maybe we could Softwares we could use: Rendering software like Blender or KPovModeler (I've tried working on a simple scene in KPovMod, and it's not all that difficult), to create a nice 3D graphic. GIMP (pretty obvious), to do most of the processing work and maybe Inkscape to create the final calender by composing all the art, as handling text is often a lot easier in vector graphics softwares, as compared to raster ones like GIMP. NORMS - 1. Use only open source software +1 CALENDAR FORMAT - I don't (as yet) know the professional names of the size but am sure we will find out soon enough :-) The Desktop Calendar - the one that sits on desktops (the table desktops not the computer desktops) The Large Wall Calendars - which are one large chart sheet and not folded) The folded Wall Calendar - - like a flip chart +1 for the Desktop Calendar. However, if we are aiming at a lot of content, Large Wall Calendars will give us a lot of real estate :) 3. Do we need to ask Canonical and other agencies about using their logos. This is not a commercial venture but we will still need to pay for the actual calendars so does that imply a financial something // that they should be worried about. I guess Aanjhan or Hardik could clarify. Also, I remember that a similar issue was discussed on the list, and should be there in the archives. Here's what I can help with: I can click decent snaps (http://flickr.com/photos/ninadsp). I've been processing photos and making posters very actively on campus for the student clubs that I'm a part of for the past 3 years (I haven't uploaded any of the posters anywhere, but if someone wishes to, I can send em over :) ). Though most of my work has been in Adobe Photoshop, I've been using GIMP for most of my photo processing recently, and am getting used to it :). My only problem right now is, my exams start in 2 days, and will continue till 15th Dec, so I'll be able to contribute to anything but brainstorming after the exams. [ubuntu-in] Giving up the GIMP is a sign of Ubuntu's mainstream maturity - A rebuttal
Hi Some days back i had posted about some software being dropped from future releases of Ubuntu, and this included GIMP An article by Ryan Paul, who was present when the decision was taken to drop GIMP from 10.04 is linked here http://arstechnica.com/open-source/news/2009/11/giving-up-the-gimp-is-a-sign-of-ubuntus-mainstream-maturity.ars I am angry, because if there is one software that i really look forward too then its GIMP. Everything else is replaceable and duplicable – not GIMP. What is below is a User's rebuttal to the Ubuntu Developers who are deciding to drop. (the number points are extracts from the article text which i have chosen to respond to) 1. Dropping GIMP is a sign of “Ubuntu's growing maturity as a mainstream platform for regular users” So who are the regular users – I have been a user since Ubuntu's first version and GIMP has always been my favorite, even if not the most used software. It allowed me a feel of what all is possible, it allowed me to express my creativity such that no other software could, it allows me the happiness of knowing that my machine is running worldclass software and not some imitation. No other popular Ubuntu software comes close. And as a “mature” and “regular” user i need GIMP. Are we also to assume that , as we users mature, we should move to a distribution thats more advanced and that Ubuntu is essentially just a dumbed down beginners version. 2. Its size footprint is especially problematic for Ubuntu, Yes GIMP is big, how big, synaptic says, gimp and gimp-data total to 48.3 MB. I am sure that the developers can find a way to squeeze this on. Compression technology is fairly advanced and knoppix type Distributions pack far more than what Ubuntu manages for the same space so how about including mHowever lets look at their condition that the base install medium should be a CD. DVD's have become quite ubiquitous, prices of DVD's now are less than what CD's where at the time of the first Ubuntu distribution. So instead of dumping software i think Ubuntu should start providing more – like include more exciting stuff – celestia or stellarium, inscape, scribus, pdf tools, audacity, kompozer, etc etc. I am sure there are tonnes of stuff out there that can be included without detracting from the simple and friendly approach and even if they are not installed by defualt they are available to the user on the install medium. 3. There is a clear need for a lighter editing program that will start faster and eschew features that are unnecessary for a majority of users. The replacement being offered is F-Spot – which the author says was redone in an hour and a half to fill the gap being left by GIMP. So we regular users now have to simply shift to F-spot because the UD's say so. How about first providing us with a trial and then letting us regular users decide if its worth it. F-spot has never been good enough in the first place and its inclusion over something like gthumb has always left me confused let alone as a replacement for GIMP. 4. The removal of a niche professional graphics editing tool reflects Ubuntu's growing maturity as a mainstream platform for regular users. I wonder if the number of regular users of Ubuntu are less than the number of new users joining in. If so they maybe its time to figure out if its worth having a separate distribution for newcomers , who i think the developers think are dumb and not in a position to use gimp and for not so dumb regulars who slog very hard to make the base install of Ubuntu complete but installing a host of missing applications. As far are niche software goes – every thing about Ubuntu is niche - openoffice is a software used by office oriented professionals so drop this and replace it with a text editor or maybe some other scaled down lite version, after what do we need this slow to load and heavy application for. We can easily get it from the repository if need be. - Similarly dump evolution – afterall only a user whose used it before is going to use this, a new user won't even know about a mail client will they. - How about Firefox, the flag bearer of the open source initiative. This is definetely a niche product, since it makes up only 25% of the installed browsers, thus i urge the Ubuntu Developers to give us something more light weight and less nichey, I hope they have something in mind. Firefox is too professional, heavy, slow and niched. - Finally Ubuntu itself is only used by a small portion of the computer users so why not drop this niche idea and just move on. 5. Still easy to get GIMP from the repositories The trend of dropping software has been noticeable – first thunderbird disappears from the install CD, then gthumb, wvdial and now GIMP. As a regular Ubuntu user, and many others like me, every time we upgrade or reinstall we have to either spend hours travelling and reaching a broadband place and installing large numbers of other software to make our

To all, guys this has happened several times, instead of wasting time in debating why don't we just start moderating the mails sent to this group, so that we can save a lot of time. we do not need to moderate mails of each n every member, but if a member is newly joined till the moment he/she sends a specific number of mails to this group get familiar with using google groups, we can moderate him/her. Many times some new member joins he/she does not know how to reply to list or just gives username password to some social networking site this problem occurs. Some senior members can take initiative become moderator. everyone has time constraints, so we can create a pool of moderators. we can also ask for some volunteers. i can be a volunteer if the owner/moderator wants me too. Salut à tous, je commence avec Ubuntu et suis très emballé. Je ne suis pas un ''computer whiz'' et ne connait ni Linux ni Unix. Le problème que j'ai c'est que je n'arrive pas à me brancher facilement à l'internet (j'ai un modem interne Motorola SM56). J'ai essayé de trouver de la documentation et des programmes sur internet (avec mon autre système, eh oui Windows) me permettant de me brancher. Je n'ai pas eu de succès et cela me frustre beaucoup de découvrir que c'est quelque chose de compliqué à faire. Mon fournisseur d'internet ne peut pas m'aider à me brancher; il n'offre pas ce support aux utilisateurs de Linux. Est-ce que quelqu'un de la communauté Ubuntu peut m'aider en me disant quoi faire, J'avoue avoir besoin d'être guidé pas à pas. Je compte sur vous. Je viens tout juste de m'inscrire à cette liste et je l'ai fait car j'ai besoin d'aide; c'est mon premier envoi. Salut Gilles C'est effectivement un faiblesse d'Ubuntu, les modems ne sont pas supportés out of the box. Je constate que OpenSuse (une autre distribution linux) semble offrir le support modem d'emblée, mais je ne l'ai pas testé. Je compte configurer le modem de mon portable d'ici vendredi. Si je réussis, je te fais signe, on s'arrangera pour faire le tien. Par contre, si quelqu'un d'autre sur cette liste peut te conseiller plus rapidement, ce serait bien... I've had this with a couple of friends who use Yahoo. They had simple passwords, so it looks like the bad guys are brute force attacking the accounts. Hi, Recently I downloaded the file for my mum's Canon iP4600 printer and installed it. It worked after the install, and we restarted Ubuntu so that I could see it working after a restart and it appeared to be ok. Trouble started the following day when after an update the printer decided it didn't want to work. It sits there after receiving the document cycling through it's start up cycle and then stops, it doesn't print anything. I've tried removing the printer from Ubuntu and reinstalling it, this seems to work until Ubuntu is restarted, then back to the same problem. I know I'm doing something wrong, I just don't know what! On the 4300 that I have an orange light flashes on the printer and you have to look in the book to see what it means. I do not get the popups on screen indicating the problem that I did in windows. Yep, I know what you mean, playing HD stuff on Ubuntu 9.04 with Intel graphics :-) What I want to do eventually is build a PC to run MythBuntu, I've got an older Dell GX280 kicking around which I'm not doing anything with which would probably make a nice PC for playing HD stuff on with an NVidia graphics card in there using VAPDU. It currently does do HD just with a few dropped frames. Colin, Thanks for answering, the printer is brand new and has only printed about 10 pages. I bought my mum a new pc (and put Ubuntu on it) and a new canon printer, to be honest I don't think it's the cartridges. It's a good point and something that is often missed (especially with my mum!) problems when using orca with ibmtts
Hi all, I'm running orca in ubuntu karmic 64-bit environment using IBM via voice as my primary synthesizer and speech dispatcher. I'm faced with trhee problems: 1. sd_ibmtts crashes frequently. In general when orca stops, if I execute the command pgrep -l ibm, nothing is returned. If I kill speech-dispatcher orca starts to speak again. 2. The punctuation is not read correctly. I've orca configured with punctuation level set to all but when I read a text that contains . , ? ' and etc, the symbols are not read. If I switch to espeak the punctuation is read correctly. 3. The symbols and were not advertised in any way, even when I was typing. To remedy this problem I edited the file ~/.speech-dispatcher/conf/modules/ibmtts.conf and changed the contents of the line that read #IbmttsUseSSML 0 to IbmttsUseSSML 1. Thanks. Jack Crashes With Bus Error
Hi All, Have recently installed karmic koala ubuntu studio and have been very happy with the overall feel of the system. Got a couple of strange niggles. The first is that Jack often won't start either from using QJackctl or from the command line. Often it starts up first time, but if it is stopped it won't restart until I shut down the computer and start again (loging out doesn't help). Starting from the command line gives me a Bus Error and no further information. I've tried googling this but have not got anywhere. The sound card I'm using is a USB m-audio MobilePre. Any ideas appreciated. Not sure where to start with this. thanks, James. Alguém tem informações sobre o wi-fi virtual do WINDOWS 7(esse abençoado SO)?. Quero apenas saber se o UBUNTU (ainda mais abeçoado SO) tem este recurso ou se há possíveis implementações para ele, ou se não tem necessidade disso. Eu nem ia responder a esse tópico porque achei que teria gente muito mais capacitada do que eu pra responder, mas pelo jeito não tem. Não sei se dá pra colocar, por exemplo, a placa wireless em modo promíscuo e configurar vários alias do tipo wlan0:0, wlan0:1, etc. Cada um ocupando um canal, ou o mesmo canal porque não tentei. Vou deixar o teste para o pessoal mais gabaritado. Nas interfaces ethernet, eu sei que dá pra fazer porque já fiz isso algumas vezes: configurar vários alias para a mesma interface (etho:0, eth0:1), configurar IPs diferentes para cada alias (inclusive de redes diferentes) e fingir que o micro tem mais de uma placa de rede. Nunca consegui fazer um NAT de um alias para outro, mas acredito que seja possível. mais uma vez deixo para o pessoal mais gabaritado responder. Abraço. O principal fator que leva os efeitos visuais do compiz serem desabilitados é o driver da placa de video. Existe uma opção no menu chamada HardwareDrivers (System administration HardwareDrivers) la voce deve ter a sua placa de video com driver desabilitado. Espero que voce não use o Evolution como cliente de email. Apos mudar do 9.04 para o 9.10 no desktop do trabalho ele ficou muito mais lento. Espero ainda que não precise de proxy para navegar a internet. Tirando isso o KK é bem legal. att Pedro A. Sou um fanático por Poker... Tinha uma versão 9.04 perfeita, com todos meus programas funcionando perfeitamente (exeto o PokerTH, que pedia para atualizar), jogos rodando sem problemas. Enfim, o sistema funcionava perfeitamente. Demorei cerca de 4 horas para atualizar para a nova versão, prestando bastante atenção nos pacotes que não eram compatíveis e procurando saber mais a respeito das mudanças ocorridas no sistema Após a atualização. Comecei a ter problemas na inicialização, que trocava toda hora de tela (terminal/interface gráfica...) (o que deixava a inicialização feia, parecendo já ser um sistema destabilizado). Relevei, afinal de contas era a primeira vez que logava. Na hora de foi selecionar o usuário, além da resolução da tela ter diminuido e os botões terem ficados um por cima do outro (800x600, enquanto a do meu usuário era 1024x768 por padrão), quando loguei, meu papel de parede havia sido alterado e meus efeitos visuais haviam sido desabilitados, os ícones haviam aumentado de tamanho (já eram grandes, mas ficaram maiores ainda a ponto de lotar a barra, sem deixar espaço para editá-la). Relevei mais uma vez e tentei arrumar o problema. O do papel de parede foi simples, porém meus efeitos visuais não habilitavam mais e o dos ícones eu tive que tirar vários deles para poder editar e então voltar a organizá-los. Costumava usar os efeitos no máximo e ainda com o pacote do CompizFusion instalado para melhorar mais sem nenhum problema e, por algum motivo estranho a mensagem apareceu Efeitos visuais não puderam ser habilidados. Nada mais de Ubuntu bonito para mim... Esse foi um dos muitos defeitos que encontrei ao começar a usar. Minha internet 3G não reconhcia o modem, mas reconhecia um pendrive no lugar dele. Resetei o modem (tirei e coloquei denovo, sempre com segurança) umas 4 vezes e milagrosamente ele voltou a funcionar. Meu Mozzila Firefox 3.5 ficou em Inglês mesmo depois de instalar o suporte de idioma completo. Meu TuxGuitar (programa de edição de partituras para músicos) não reproduz mais som.(placa offboard) Meu sistema leva quase o dobro de tempo para ligar (antes demorava exatos 22 segundos, agora demora 42) Tive um erro com o disco de swap durante a inicialização, mas mesmo assim o sistema entrou. Sinto que mesmo com os efeitos desabilitados, meu sistema está mais lento. Enfim, fiquei MUITO mal por ter baixado a nova versão. Lógico que houveram melhorias incríveis (como os drives de audio, que agora estão mais simples de mecher), mas os muitos defeitos me fizeram mudar de idéia a respeito do Karmic Koala e estou pensando sériamente em voltar ao 9.04. Gostaria muito que pudesse ter alguma resposta o mais breve possível de como colocar os efeitos visuais novamente. Consegui arrumar a maioria dos outros problemas... Por enquanto, fico com o 9.04, pois os aplicativos que mais uso são o evolution e a gnumeric que, por sinal, também estava sem a tradução total, ficando meio inglês meio português... nada sério, mas chato na hora de se trabalhar. [Ubuntu-BR] backup do tomboy
Antes de formatar eu salvei a pasta .tomboy que ficava na pasta home, pois uso demais esse software e tenho muitas notas arquivadas por ele. Agora não estou conseguindo voltar as notas que tinha com o ubuntu 9.10 que instalei. Inicialmente eu abri o tomboy e não foi criado nenhuma pasta .tomboy na pasta home, mesmo assim coloquei a minha pasta de backup na home e ainda não deu certo. Instalei o Jaunty em um notebook e configurei tb os repositórios medibuntu. Esta semana fui assistir uns videos e percebi que não havia som para o usuário jose, que é o administrador do sistema, mas havia som para a usuária dani, que não tinha, originalmente, tais privilégios. Mesmo adicionando ambos aos grupos pulse, pulse-rt etc. o som ainda funciona SOMENTE para a usuária dani, que sequer tem permissões de montagem de sistema de arquivos. Дык иного логина-то и нету =) Вы же создали флешку равную CD-диску =) То есть инсталлятор создаёт флешу из образа (иначе зачем он ему нужен?), где нет никаких пользовательских данных. LiveUSB =) Ну, есть 2 способа, даже 3: 1. Поставить Убунту нормально на флешку (загрузчик там, разделы, файловая система...) 2. Сохранять свои данные на разделе флешки, который для этого предназначен (типа система отдельно - файлы отдельно) 3. Можно загрузиться с LiveCD/USB, снять образ файловой системы и запихнуть в squashfs - и подменить файл filesystem.squashfs, с которого загружается Убунта, на свой. У меня получалось - все мои настройки и установленные программы были со мной. Пытаюсь отформатировать второй винт в ext4, при попытке это сделать из Дисковая утилита вылазиет вот такая ошибка. Что бы это значило? Сделал, как ты сказал. Сначала fdisk убил, что было, создал один раздел. Нет, до этого, когда у меня второй винт был в ext2 (на нём старая убунту стояла) при загрузке системы я видел в Переход, что у меня есть ещё один винт. При клике на него, у меня спрашивали мой пароль админа и тогда открывали его, как винт. После моих экспериментов с фдисками и мкфс-ами в Переходе он пропал, но вроде как смонтировался мною ручками через mount. Всё правильно: /dev/sdb - блочное устройство. /dev/sdb1 - раздел на блочном устройстве. mkfs умеет делать файловую систему на любом блочном устройстве (хоть /dev/ramX) - так что создание разделов в данном случае необязательно. Это - скорее традиция. Однако, если захочется переразбить - вот тут будут проблемы. Hi Jean-Baptiste, I am sorry I am unable to follow your commands because I have chosen another solution that worked for me. I have figured out that problem was in /var/lib/dpkg/info preinstall and postinstall files (they had 0bytes length and almost all related packages had the same problem) and when I deleted them I was able to remove all affected packages. After that I was able to install virt-manager properly. I have also tried to install virt-manager on another notebook (Dell E6500) with kubuntu9.10 and it was without any problem. Therefore it seems that all problems appeared because of the system freeze. It happened for the first time and I have absolutely no idea why it crashed down.
