Highlights of Eben Moglen's Freedom in the Cloud Talk
Here are some highlights of the talk Eben gave on Freedom in the Cloud
at the New York ISOC branch meeting last Friday, February 2. A full
transcript is available here

The Problem [2:55] : Our calendar is on the web. Our location is on
the web ... The deal that you get with the traditional service called
telephony now includes a thing you didn't know like spying. It's not a
service to you. But it's a service. And you get it for free with your
service contract for telephony. You get for free the service of
advertising with your Gmail, which of course means there is another
service behind, which is untouched by human hands, semantic analysis
of your email ... And you get free email service and some storage
which is worth exactly a penny and a half at the current price of
storage...

[ubuntu-in] Suggestion

2010-08-27 Thread Narendra Sisodiya
#1 .. if Network manager is not running, It should automatically start.
One of my friends has installed Linux on his system and it took me 30 minute
on phone to restart his network mangaer which got shutdowned automatically.
We must declare some mininum essential service which automatically restart.

#2 Reset Desktop.
Desktop configuration are stored in .gnome2 and other folder. It will be
great if someone create a right click scripts [not more then a day job]
which basically delete all new configuration and panel and reset of
original.
My friend has just installed ubuntu and he lost his top and bottom panels.
someone deleted. He is clue-less. It took me 25 minute to recreate his old
setting.

[ubuntu-in] problem with TATA Photon Whiz

2010-08-27 Thread musunuru kamakshaiah
Dear friends,
recently I got a problem with TATA 3G device. I added it through
Network_Manager, some times it connects and some times doesn't connect. But
every time when delete from VPN connections (NMgr.) and add freshly it connects.

I was using Huawei 3G Modem even in Ethiopia, with ETC connection, but it used
to give me seamless connection I never suffered connection problem, except
Lucid
Modem issue (Which was solved after I installed Modswith software).

Any solution to this

Please let me know.

You could write a crontab entry for this, to poll every 5minutes or so.

 #2  Reset Desktop.

For something similar to #2, I used the following steps :

1. When you have a sane panel config, dump it to a file initially

gconftool-2 --dump /apps/panel ~/sane.gnome_panel

2. When you want to reset to this entry, use the following as a script :

#!/bin/sh

killall --regexp gnome-panel
gconftool-2 --load /home/foo/sane.gnome_panel
gnome-panel

The above will replace the gconf data with the earlier data. You can
also use this for adding/deleting panels, for example when moving from
single to multiple monitors.

I don't know if there is a way to do it without restarting gnome-panel.

Brandenburg Concerto No. 2 in F Major, BWV 1047* et Brandenburg
Concerto No. 4 in G Major, BWV 1049* de Johann Sebastien Bach.

[ubuntu-uk] Fed-up with VMWare!

2010-08-27 Thread Cornelius Mostert
Hi all.

Just to let you know I am FED-UP with VMWare - Server!!
I have been wrestling with it on Ubuntu and other distros for TO long
now!!
The latest is just the final straw!!
I have redone my PC to have 10.4 on and loaded VMServer on (with all the
patches!! I found on the internte to get it installed), but then the Console
could not be used to open VMs and had to use RDC / VNC etc.
I have followed numerous fixes but none seem to work:
Downgrade Firefox from 3.6.xx to 3.5.xx did not work
Extracting and installing the remote console separately did not work
ETC.
And then with every new version of FF or Linux kernals / headers you have to
hope and pray all will reconfigure!!!

Now I am switching to VirtualBox! Hopefully this will provide a solution, I
am a GUI person so KVM is still a bit too much for me if you have to every
time make use of a CLI, I guess there are GUIs for it but VirtualBox seems
to be easy enough to not take too much time of my daily routine.

The big box still run ESXi though...

[ubuntu-uk] A-levels (was Royal Society)

2010-08-27 Thread Mark Harrison
This is a genuine question to those currently / recently at Schoo/Uni.

When I was choosing my A-levels (1987), there was a strong piece of advice
for those who wanted to study Computing at Uni. That advice was don't
bother with Computing A-Level, do Maths and Further Maths instead.

This was on the basis that, at the time, the Universities were saying that
they basically wanted to teach programming / analysis to people who had good
experience at symbolic manipulation, and considered the A-level syllabus, as
it was at the time, to be a bit of a waste of space.

These days, has the world changed? If you are studying Computing at Uni (or
aiming to do so), is the expectation that you would have done A-levels
(A2,AS, whatever they are these days) first???

My experience, by the way, is that the people who are BEST at Programming,
are those who've discovered it OUTSIDE of the formal teaching environment,
and want to hack (in the old-fashioned sense) for the pleasure of doing
so. For this (among many other things), we need to thank the Linux community
for providing a set of tools allowing the potential programmer to get
started. (Yes, I know you could get started with VB, but, while I've written
a lot of code in it over the years, I don't think it's a great language in
which to teach the fundamentals.)

Re: [ubuntu-uk] A-levels (was Royal Society)

2010-08-27 Thread Sean Miller
I can't answer your question, Mark, as we're peers, but I think that
the BBC Micro was a great teaching tool because it allowed structured
programming in BASIC which most of the other home PCs did not.

Sinclair, and Commodore, both used a lot of GOTO and GOSUB statements.
They were strictly banned at my school... DEFPROC and DEFFN were
encouraged, and that meant we had to think out the structure of our
programs before we wrote them, which was important when we moved on to
more grown up languages such as 'C'... also, using memory...

I recall writing a Prestel clone at school where the pages (if you
recall in Prestel you had a page and then you had 'a-z' sub-pages
within it) were loaded into memory rather than each being read from
disk which not only gave incredible performance improvement but also
made us think about memory management, something I doubt anybody gives
a thought to these days. So, for instance, you'd go to page (say) 800
and it'd load a-z in at the same time from one file. Then copied
using the hex memory locations byte to byte to the mode 7 screen
area when switching from a-b, b-c etc.

Like you, I don't think there was ever a credible 'A' Level
Computing offered to me... most of my programming happened at home, or
in lunch breaks. Ah, the freedom of a 5.25 floppy ;-)

2010-08-27 Thread Harry Rickards
On 27 August 2010 11:50, Mark Harrison m...@ascentium.co.uk wrote:

First, a quick explanation. AS is the first year of A-Level and
completing an AS level gives you 'half' an A Level. A2 is the second
year and after completing an AS and an A2 you get a 'full' A Level.
You take up to 5 AS Levels, but at the end of your AS year drop some
(I think you can drop up to two, but you don't have to drop any).

Not really. Although I'm doing an IT A-Level (I'm doing it 2 years
early, so it's not intruding on anything else otherwise I wouldn't do
it), AFAIK it's recommended by Oxbridge to only take Computing as a
fourth A2 level else don't take it, and don't take IT at all. The
advice still stands towards Maths and Further Maths, but I think it's
also recommended to take Physics and Electronics, at least at A2
level.

Absolutely. I will just add that as much as we may want it to be just
the Linux community, it's not. Rewired State run something called
Young Rewired State every year (I think there was a post about it on
this list). This is an annual hackweek type event for 15 to 18 year
olds. At this year's event most people seemed to be running Mac OSX,
with some running Windows (I think I accidently flamed Microsoft on
Twitter, saying the Microsoft guys should just leave because no-one
wants them here, while the two Windows Phone 7 guys were looking over
my shoulder) and even fewer running Linux (I think everyone apart from
me was running Ubuntu, I was running Debian because it was all my EEE
701 could cope with and run smoothly).

I stopped using VMware a while back and have been using VirtualBox since
then, with many distros installed as virtual machines. It's great.
VirtualBox originally was not as good as VMware but it has improved so
much as to be a real mainstream product.

And it can work with vmware files too.

Good luck with VirtualBox. You can also download virtualbox VDI disk
images of linux distros from sites like http://virtualboxes.org and

2010-08-27 Thread pmgazz
There's been some work to tune up Linux kernels to ensure they run as
efficiently as possible - I think the bigger gains are in extending the
life of computer equipment though.

As we all know, Ubuntu can run on anything up to 6 years old and you can
re-use pretty much any old kit with an LTSP server. This could keep all
the XP PCs/laptops and servers (which would otherwise need to be thrown
out cos they can't run Windows 7) out of landfill for up to another 5
years. If you look up the carbon footprint of manufacturing a new PC
it'll make your hair stand on end so this is a serious contribution to
the climate change agenda.

It can also run on the small form-factor servers, PCs and netbooks -
and, of course, using the Atom lowers consumption significantly.

[ubuntu-uk] Preventing a hack attempt

2010-08-27 Thread Daniel Case
Hi there,

One of my servers has recently been attacked, it has one remote SSH user
which cannot run 'sudo', i made it like that so that if it was comprimized,
no-one would be able to do much.

However, someone managed to gain the password to that account on the server
then used vi /etc/passwd to gain a list of users, then launched a
bruteforce using su against my admin account.
(that's what I can gather from the logs)

This did not get very far before I saw and kicked the user off and changed
all of the passwords, but I would like to know how to prevent this sort of
thing happening again.

I need to know mainly how to stop the SSH user running su in the first place
and how to stop the user seeing files like /etc/passwd

Anyone have any suggestions?

You could always rename su to something else, I suppose... I renamed
wget to webget on one server because scripts were using it to
download files to the server with malicious intent... you could also
change the port that ssh runs on, which I have done as well, which
tends to make it a bit harder (I use port 23432 - easy to remember,
but not 22)

Not sure about hiding /etc/passwd... there is probably a reason why it
needs to be accessible to all users...

Re: How to handle PPAs that need to override Software Center metadata?

2010-08-27 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Scott Ritchie wrote on 27/08/10 00:22:
...
The descriptions in Software Center are now out of date, since they
aren't the same for pre-PPA and post-PPA. Once the user adds the Wine
PPA they become more than confusing. So with the PPA ticking the box
for Beta Release will actually give you the stable wine1.2, and to
get wine1.3 you have to scroll down into the packages list and pick it
 manually.
...
Ideally the mere act of adding the PPA would provide some new metadata
for Software Center. Since a user usually wants to install (or update)
some software at the same time as adding a PPA, it would be
particularly convenient if this could be done in one step (rather than
the current add sources, then open software center and find the right
Wine package or click an apt-url link).
...

For a year now, we have been trying to get the Soyuz team to make
Launchpad generate this metadata whenever a new package is published, so
that Ubuntu Software Center can download it whenever it downloads
Packages.gz. https://dev.launchpad.net/ArchiveIndex I suggest
explaining your use case to them (and perhaps adding it to the
specification).

Translating Unity

2010-08-27 Thread David Planella
Hi translators,

Just a heads up about Unity templates being ready for translation
(they've been for a few days already).

I've given them a higher priority, so they are on the first page of the
templates list, they are:

https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/maverick/+source/unity/+pots/unity
https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/maverick/+source/unity-place-applications/+pots/unity-place-applications/
https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/maverick/+source/unity-place-files/+pots/unity-place-files/

There are a couple of old templates formerly used in UNE and now for arm
builds only. They are netbook-launcher-efl, window-picker-applet and
go-home-applet, of which I've lowered the priority a bit.

Happy translating!

Regards,
David.

Ubuntu One Evolution e-mail translation

2010-08-27 Thread David Planella
Hi translators,

The Ubuntu One team is adding a welcome e-mail to be shown to new users
in Evolution in addition to the default welcome e-mail.

We'd like to make this e-mail translatable, but on this cycle there will
no time to integrate this translation into Launchpad, which is something
we'll be looking into for the next.

For this cycle, we'll just set up translations on a wiki page and we'll
integrate them manually to the package.

So if you'd like to translate the welcome message, here's how you can do
it:

 1. Go to:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Translations/Wanted/UbuntuOneEmail -
That's the original text to translate
 2. Copy the e-mail text
 3. Click on the link to your language on the language table at the
top, or add your language to the table if it's not there. This
will create a new empty subpage.
 4. Paste the original text and do the translation. Once you are
done, you can save the page.

You can click on the català link on that page to see an example of a
translation. The translations will be integrated into the package by the
NonLanguagePackTranslationDeadline [1].

You can find more detailed background information here:

  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evolution/+bug/615874

Regards,
David.

Thanks for pointing us out to this!
It's not that hard as a process, and is definitely better than not
having a translation at all! ;)

You can find more detailed background information here:

  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evolution/+bug/615874

Just to be clear: once we are done with our translation, should we add
a comment here on this thread, or should we add a comment on the bug,
or before the deadline somebody will fetch the translations from the
wiki, regardless of their real status? (hopefully not, but there could
be uncompleted translation)

Ciao.

somos

http://groups.google.com.ec/group/comunidadesol .

http://www.asle.ec/mediawiki/index.php/Minga_Kachary .

O Java Run Time existe para várias

Mac
