[Bug 1573325] [NEW] tutorial overlay doesn't go away

2016-04-21 Thread Ashton Scott Snapp
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu Release: 16.04

Version of unity8 package: 8.12+16.04.20160323.2-0ubuntu1

Expected to happen: Guide overlay would pop up, I'd hover my mouse over
where it was telling me (the right of the screen), then it would either
go away or continue with the guide/tutorial/thing.

What happened: Guide overlay stayed on screen even when I hovered my
mouse over the right side of the screen and the multitasking interface
appeared.

tl;dr: IT WON'T GO AWAY.

I have now managed to get tkcvs working on my system by installing the
default tk package, (sudo apt-get install tk).

Note - I already had tk8.4 installed, but tkcvs would not run without
the default tk package.

[Bug 1025527] [NEW] Dell Latitude E6410: 12.04 crashes when on battery

2012-07-16 Thread Ashton Fagg
Public bug reported:

When on battery power, my Dell Latitude E6410 freezes after a random
amount of time. It does not matter if it is a fresh boot, or coming out
of suspend. Sometimes it doesn't happen at all, other times it does. The
screen completely freezes, I can't even move the cursor (nor can I
switch to a tty). The WiFi light blinks really fast, which makes me
think it could be a kernel panic. I am using the proprietary nVidia
drivers. I have never had this happen on AC power.

I read another bug report which suggested that Intel Speedstep may be at
fault. I disabled it in the BIOS and this doesn't make a difference.

[Bug 803943] Re: compiz consuming a lot of cpu

2012-06-17 Thread Ashton Fagg
This affects me too. Can confirm that disabling vertical sync helps.
Currently using a Dell Latitude E6410 with nVidia NVS3100M running
TwinView mode. Performance was utterly atrocious prior to this, with
periods where Compiz would hog a whole core. Disabling vertical sync
seems to make the machine run much quieter and cooler.

I have noticed this, particularly on low brightness settings. I
believe it is to do with the ambient light sensor, nothing sinister in
regards to drivers. However I too would welcome any information on
this.

[Bug 977646] [NEW] Screen won't enter power down

2012-04-09 Thread Ashton Fagg
Public bug reported:

The screen won't enter power down. It blanks (i.e. goes black but the
backlight is still on). I have configured this to happen automatically
after 10 mins of inactivity, however this doesn't work.

Also running xset dpms force off, suspend, standby will either cause it
to do the same thing, or it will flicker on and off a few times before
coming back on.

[Bug 516920] Re: gnome-do crashes when Preferences selected from menu

2011-04-18 Thread Ashton Kemerling
Aha, found my issue. I originally thought Arch didn't have libgnome-
desktop-2-11. Technically it doesn't, but it's provided by gnome-
desktop. Unfortunately I'm running gnome-desktop 3.0.0-1, so the same
bug will probably crop up on libgnome-desktop-3.

That being said, I feel like my issue should (or already is) a different
bug.

[Bug 351263] Re: package pacemaker None [modified: /var/lib/dpkg/info/pacemaker.list] failed to install/upgrade: trying to overwrite `/usr/sbin/attrd_updater', which is also in package heartbeat

2009-04-28 Thread Max Ashton
This bug is mirrored upstream. http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-
bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=488636

Cursory research into both heartbeat and pacemaker packages suggests
this issue is due to project split, which lead to some confusion between
filenames etc. According to http://www.linux-ha.org/HomePage , for
compatibility between heartbeat and pacemaker, it's required that we use
heartbeat v. 2.99.0. Until then, the deps will break pacemaker.

[Bug 89892] Re: Omnibook 6100 turns off or freezes during boot up

2008-11-02 Thread Dave Ashton
As the above, (misspelled), comment suggests, I've just installed 8.10,
(kernel 2.6.27-7), and the problem remains. I am using the M2.41 bios
mentioned above, so this doesn't appear to fix the problem.

My workaround for the problem is as follows:

1. Install using the text based alternate installer CD, (this doesn't crash
like the live CD).
2. Try to boot; this may take a few re-boots, mine boots about 25% of the time,
(see note below).
3. Once you are looking at the desktop, open a terminal and type 'gksudo
nautilus' to open the file manager with root access.
4. Navigate to the /lib/modules/2.6.nn-n-generic/kernel/drivers/char/hw-random/
and rename intel-rng.ko to intel-rng.ko.off.

Note: If you cannot get the system to boot at all in step 2, try this as
an alternative:

2. Boot from a live CD with an old kernel. I used Damn Small Linux, but I guess
an Edgy live CD may also work.
3. Rename the Intel-rng.ko file, as described above by ManfredBremen on
2007-08-23

You should now have a fully working system that boots every time.

One last thing, every once in a while, the regular Ubuntu updates will
include a new kernel; this too will need the Intel-rng.ko file renaming
as above. Just choose the older kernel version from the Grub boot menu,
and proceed from step 3 as before.

Good luck,

Dave

Hey Rico, I love your work and style. But there is something in the
silhouette of this ibex that makes it appear, to me, to be somewhat
rodent-like. Maybe the shortness of the head? It seems that the length
from the point where the eyes would be to the end of the nose needs a little
more length to make it more like the mountain goat that it should be. Or is

I think Grandma May is going to want pics of her grand-kids, weirdly
stretched out or tiled across her screen. :)

As for the rest of the users, there's a whole everlasting gobstopper of
imagery out there which they've been using for a long time: DeviantArt,
Flickr, Wikimedia, National Geographic, Sports Illustrated, endless numbers
of high-quality graphic design sites like pixelgirlpresents.com, image
search engines ...the entire internet is a gallery. I think it is always
going to be easier to grab some art that way, than a button linking to more
art or an add-on pack, and I think most people *want* to find things their
own way. They enjoy the process. A few good solid images, a default to
introduce/celebrate the release, and I think Ubuntu is good to go.

I understand the appeal of the idea, but I don't think it will be a good use
of resources spending time maintaining a reservoir of beautiful art...it'd
take a long time just to get people to agree on what beautiful is...which
would be going in the direction of letting users vote for art...which is
just the same as allowing everything...which gets you back to using the
internet as a resource to begin with. I don't think Ubuntu's payoff would be
worth the effort. People like what they like. They know where to get it or
how to look for it. Whether it is pics of the kids, their favorite
celebrity, or some swirly gradient grunge design.

Although it says it is under the apache license the download includes no
license so it is not free at all. The font itself appears to have a
 license
 in it:

License: This font software is the valuable property of Ascender

So it is not free and we cannot use it (yet).

Btw, droid is made by the same company that made the liberation fonts.

So how does Droid compare in terms of the language support mentioned
earlier? Maybe it has broad support if it's main purpose is to support
Android. Also, if Droid was made by the same people who made Liberation,
maybe the metrics were given the same attention? IANAFE (I am not a font

Re: [ubuntu-art] Whats Up with This?

2008-07-01 Thread Ashton
I'll say it again, we are testing a dark theme to find out whether it is
even
possible to use one or not.

Getting this message out before the alpha release would have been a good
idea, in retrospect. I know there is no way to avoid TehMobMind over at Digg
and the inevitable comments from people who hold a bizarre fascination with
their own feces, the endlessly clever guesses about what the next build code
name should be, etc...but some of the other comments might have been
tempered if the writer at Ars was more informed (not that anyone at Digg
would RTFA) about the goals of the dark theme. (Actually, I think the Ars
piece was acceptable)

Alphas should absolutely be a place for playing around with ideas, testing
concepts...I don't think Digg or even Ars should be given room to discourage
experimentation. Some PlanetUbuntu posts might have helped. And I'm
wondering about the feasibility of some kind of doc/readme, slide show, or
even pre-loaded Tomboy note, that would pop up or sit on the desktop only in
the alphas, which would explain some of these things as well as whatever
other changes Ubuntu might be looking into. With this release we are
exploring ... with this app, that app, and so on. Any constructive criticism
should be left at such and such place...blah blah. If you have this hardware
or that hardware we are particularly interested in your experiences with
blah-de-blah...Thanks for trying this build and aiding in the growth of such
and such.

EveOnline and other endeavors suffer the same kind of ZOMG I'm not
participating anymore because things have changed!!! and even when they try
to be open and transparent by making use of dev blogs, audio interviews,
video interviews, (and in EveOnline's case an oft ignored test
server)...these reactions still exist. But at least they can point to some
effort to keep users informed. Whether users chose to read, listen, or view
the material is another matter. What you end up with are the informed vs the
uninformed, and they can duke it out with each other.

Seems like most of this info is out there in different places for each
project. Having it gathered together and presented clearly and succinctly -
not talking about pages of technical info here, thinking about the kind of
thing displayed during an XP install...but more informative...um, and not
during the install - would get a more useful response out of the community,
instead of death threats, insults, and Mob fear reaction.

NOW, for my question. :)

If the dark theme is an experiment, what is the fallback? Is it unity?
Something else entirely?

I would disagree with the idea that this is not a progression as it uses
 the

 good start.

The icons could use an update but that is a lot of work which takes time.

All in all, I think that this is a good start. How it progresses is still
 to
be seen. We included a dark theme because we are interested in it and want
 to
test it. Remember that Intrepid is only now in the alpha phase so there is
plenty of time for improvement :-)

Could someone explain to me how pixmap themes work?

While I have little direct experience with using the pixmap engine I would
imagine it is exactly as named; based on small pixmaps which define the
 different elements.

This can't happen as the license doesn't pass the Debian free software
guidelines test. Last I saw anyway.

That has changed:

But after a long wait and the persistent work by several people these
issues have finally been settled and the Liberation fonts have been accepted
into the Debian archive http://packages.debian.org/sid/ttf-liberation.
Other distros are expected to follow suit soon.

As I understand it, Liberation was not meant to be the best font in
the world and is not our best choice. Liberation was meant as a free
option for people who want the best interoperability with MS Office
users. That means with Liberation, if you receive an office document

This is a good thing the liberation font team has done but our themes

Unfortunately I don't think it's a great choice as a system default. To my
mind (and it's a simplification), Bitstream Vera Sans (a.k.a. Sans) =
Tahoma, while Liberation Sans = Arial. The Liberation font are excellently
suited for Word documents, but the Sans variety in particular is not suited
as a font for applications. This is especially noticeable if you use
Slight hinting (which I believe may become the default hinting method for
 Intrepid). Purely IMHO, of course.

I've loaded up Segoe and other fonts in the past. They look great, of
course, but there are some areas where I try to stick with open, and um,
tolerable solutions...When I first subbed Lib sans for Sans, I felt it was
an improvement. I realize everyone is going to prefer one over another,
though, and have no problem setting it up myself, until something better
comes along. I believe Linux Mint uses Lib Sans as default sys font...or did
at one point. Haven't checked Mint out in a long time.

A bit hypocritical since I use plenty of other non-free solutions for
various things...but yeah, who knows why we do the tings we do?

Máirín Duffy, art dev at Fedora, has a study of fonts and licensing that
someone might find interesting:http://duffy.fedorapeople.org/fonts/

I don't know what Fedora Sulphur is using as default sys font, though. Is it
Liberation?

Yes, it probably would, though I don't think that is a major issue.
I think it is people taking it on, without realising how much work is
really required. Especially with the new P2 plugins system, simply
updating the old packages isn't enough.
My thoughts, if anyone wants to package Eclipse, start with just the
Eclipse Platform and JDT, release as early and frequently as possible,
and add plugin packages one at a time. Target only openjdk 6. And if
you change your mind, please let others know. There have been a

totally agree that 3.3- should be an option in Gutsy/Hardy.

Re: [ubuntu-art] Having fun with installer slideshow!

2008-06-05 Thread Ashton Lafferty
Does anyone know which SVG version is being used/supported among apps like
Eye of Gnome/Mozilla/Inkscape etc? Or which features are supported? I assume
that is where the difference is. I have recently lingered too long within
Illustrator with a piece and learned that the color dodge and color burn
transformations don't carry over to Inkscape. It's unfortunate because I got
some really nice color effects out of those methods and now I've need to
either emulate them in Inkscape or just scrap it and start again in order to
get an SVG which is compliant. My own fault for being a dual booter, I know.
I assume Illustrator's SVG can be completely out of whack with one that
would be considered w3c standard, and even more so when using Illustrator's
blending and transparency effects. But are the other apps mentioned above
all using the same w3c SVG standard? Does it have to do with SVG filters
being supported? Am I on the wrong track completely?

  Hello art team!

It's been a while since I blabbered about this, and it's come some way
since then. I am working on a slideshow system for Ubuntu to work
alongside the installation progress bar in Ubiquity (the Live CD
installer). My goal is to unobtrusively give users an introduction to
Ubuntu. Something I have noticed with a lot of issues people have is
that people have simply not noticed the way things are done in Ubuntu.
Case in point, installing software, for which a shocking number of
people seem to try downloading source code /before/ noticing Add /
Remove Applications. I think having a slideshow that goes over all the
bits and pieces Ubuntu has available will do very good things for the
user experience. In addition, many of the most unique and powerful
features we have, such as custom fonts for applications, are hidden away
in very modest little corners. They have the potential to delight
people, but may never be noticed.

To put it simply, I have been browsing Ubuntu's support forums and
taking mental notes (should have been hard notes, in retrospect) about
all the great things people miss without being pushed in the right
direction first. The goal here is to give those people the right
pointers from the start in a way that does not stink. Obviously, I can't
do this without help, so contributions of any form are welcome.

The project itself is still very quiet, however I have set up the
necessary stuff in Launchpad and I have rearranged how this is done.
Most importantly, I dropped that horror of an idea that was using Glade
for slides. Instead, I am using SVGs! This means it's going to be very
nice for people to contribute to, assuming said people can work their
heads around Inkscape. (More on that later :o [1])

So now that I have decided on a decent file format, and said format is
(-should be-) dead easy, I may as well bring this up as something people
  can contribute to Right Now!

At the moment, there is no solid plan for the slideshow itself other
than slide dimensions: 700x420 pixels. In terms of the software for
displaying the slideshow, it is coming along. (I over-engineered it 5
times. How many of me does it take to change a light bulb? Believe it or
not, at least 2; I would probably create a clone of myself for the
task). Nothing visible on that end at the present time, but since these
slides are just simple graphics, said program doesn't really have to be
played with anyway. It should be sufficient to consider that the slides
will be displayed one by one, without user interaction, switching on a
timer. A slide should be readable in a very short time. They should also
all be consistent in general design.

The project for the slideshow is, as mentioned,
ubiquity-slideshow-ubuntu on Launchpad. Just head over to
  https://launchpad.net/ubiquity-slideshow-ubuntu for the working files,
  blueprints, etc.
As a quick example to get thoughts moving, I have some example slides up
there now. Two versions: One with a bland brownish background, one with
the Hardy Heron simple wallpaper... which actually does not seem a bad
effect. Those are in bzr as SVGs, and I have also uploaded an archive of
  raster images
  at http://dylanmccall.googlepages.com/Ubuntu_Slideshow_Example.tar.gz

The ideal situation is that lots of ideas get invented and one of them
gets so much love that the slideshow magically builds itself. In other
words, turn on your brains, start inventing slideshow templates and some
slides to go with them. and then get posting!

If you need first class Eclipse support/integration, use Fedora; They
have really put a lot of effort into Eclipse support.
I prefer Ubuntu over Fedora, and I am just going to stick with Eclipse

Eclipse 3.4

  3) Eclipse 3.3 being comptatible with Hardy is an absolute must and a
show-stopper for me and probably other people as well. If I cannot
install Eclipse 3.3, I cannot use Hardy. I currently cannot use Gutsy
because of another nasty bug (sound suddenly stopped working). This is
really a pity, I really want to use Ubuntu, but every version has a

But all is not lost, luckily eclipse happens to be extremely easy to

time or the chance to explore the problems methodically. My last post
was the first of three times it has connected to the WPA2 network
successfully during the last fortnight.

[Bug 134408] Sound broken since 2.6.22-10 upgrade, on HP 6710b

2007-08-23 Thread Ashton Batty
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.22

Since upgrading to 2.6.22-10, I have had a number of problems on my HP 6710b
laptop.
On boot the mute light is lit, and no sound plays through the laptop builtin
speakers.
In the gnome-volume-control program, I can unmute the sound, and then through
earphones only sound works.
If I press the mute button on the laptop, the sound will work through the
speakers, but volume control buttons no longer work, and after exactly 60
seconds, the laptop mutes again.
I can connect earphones, and they work fine.

There are now three volume controls in gnome-volume-control, Headphone, PCM,
and Speaker.
The gnome volume osd shows the reverse of the keyboard mute light, whenever the
mute button is pressed.,

** Affects: linux-source-2.6.22 (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 121439] Re: [Gutsy]Network Manager Applet can't connect wireless with ipw3945 driver

2007-08-13 Thread Ashton Batty
I managed to connect today. I did nothing special... I firstly failed to
connect to a unsecured network, but then after that failed, I tried the
WPA2 EAP-TTLS/PAP network, and it connected. NM still doesn't store
anything in the gnome-keyring, which seems broken in general. Will
investigate a bit more tomorrow, if I get the chance.

Sorry, I have no control over the network, and must use EAP-TTLS/PAP.

Still no luck today. It is doing better than yesterday... actually gets

times out while trying to associate. (Check the log excerpt)

[Bug 121439] Re: [Gutsy]Network Manager Applet can't connect wireless with ipw3945 driver

2007-08-08 Thread Ashton Batty
No luck for me either. Network manager still doesn't want to connect to
wpa2-enterprise network, (works fine in Fedora 7, so I know network
manager *can* do it). I never got the various workarounds to work
either, though I have not had trouble using wpa_supplicant manually.
I'll try again tomorrow after purging and reinstalling network-manager
et al, and using clean gconf.

[Bug 121439] Re: [Gutsy]Network Manager Applet can't connect wireless with ipw3945 driver

2007-07-30 Thread Ashton Batty
Using a HP 6710b with ipw3945. I can connect to an unsecured network,
but can not connect to a WPA2-Enterprise network.

Regarding Matt Donnelly's comment about 'any laptop these days can at
least use a cable': not always. At my university, student laptops are
only allowed to connect via wireless (and only with
WPA2-Enterprise/AES/TTLS/Pap... which means no connecting with 64bit
Vista either :p). ITS will not allow non-ITS managed machines to have
their MAC addresses registered for wired connection.

[Bug 128995] Re: G965 display blurry

2007-07-28 Thread Ashton Batty
I can't confirm the bug, but the GM965 (GMA X3100) has a similar problem
on Feisty, and probably any distro with pre 2.1.0 Intel graphics
drivers. The problem is that although the resolution is correct, a
scaling filter is still being applied, causing everything to become
slightly blurred. I haven't seen the problem with Tribe 3 on my laptop.
Maybe the drivers on the live CD are older.
