Andreas seems to be taking care of this one.

pad.lv/2078555 | Upgrading from 22.04 to 24.04.01 breaks dnsmasq
This looks like it might be getting work done on it? But not sure since no
one is assigned. I added a server backlog just in-case it doesn't get
missed since this is an important issue (even if it's with systemd).

asked the user to test the proposed package.

A new fix is upstream, but does not cherry-pick easily to our code.

pad.lv/2078854 | samba-gpupdate drops segmentation fault
This looks like it's up @Andreas Hasenack 's
sleeves. I added to our backlog by subscribing just in-case.

pad.lv/2079015 | Redundant systemd unit smartd.service
smartmontools provides a duplicate systemd unit that is broken. Added to
backlog by subscribing ubuntu-server.

pad.lv/2074309 | upgrade 22.04 -> 24.04 won't start due to feature flags |
This one is a doozie. I picked it up and made it so u-r-u blocks upgrade if
rabbitmq-server is installed. I need to work on the documentation on how to
handle an upgrade properly. This also sparks some questions on how we
should maintain rabbitmq-server going forward.

I'm working on this one. Getting upstream involved, since I imagine
bcachefs will have to account for multipathing as well.

This one is unfortunate, due to the security updates. I pinged the security

Huh, I do remember bumping into one or two of those "javascript-common

issues, but now I'm thinking that there's something bad at play here.

Thanks for bringing this bug to my attention, I'll do some testing
based on this info. Maybe the bad symlink setup was from an older
version of javascript-common that didn't get fixed and now the error is
showing up. All matching bug reports are from machines running Ubuntu
for well over a year, most starting with Bionic.

Yeah from my testing the error shows up in the daemon logs if
managesieve_notify_capability is mentioned in the conf file and
dovecot-managesieved is not installed. I haven't found the error at all
with the package installed.

I figure this is probably a config error where it was left behind and
the dovecot daemon wasn't restarted until the distro upgrade happened,
but I'm not 100% sure.

You may have already seen this, but there's an old Debian bug with a
mention of this same error message:
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=718318

Could the issue here relate to a bad or missing symlink?

The other Debian bug reports didn't look relevant.

I notice that apt prompted them about the modified configuration, but I
can't quite discern what option they chose, or how the dovecot.conf
ended up looking like. But you can see the diff if you search
DpkgTerminalLog.txt for 'Modified configuration file'. Not spotting a
mention of any *managesieve* binary or source packages in any of the
logs or attachments. The user's confirmed they believe it wasn't
installed, as you suspected.

I'm not spotting an upstream announcement that the
'managesieve_notify_capability' setting was deprecated or renamed; near
as I can tell that should still be supported. But maybe it is only
recognized when dovecot-managesieved is installed? That might explain
the behavior you're replicating.

Debian bug #665487 shows the same error message, but is also an ancient
one that's unlikely to be relevant, except that there might still be
corner cases in postrm leading to this error message.

I've added mention of these points to the bug. Do you think this
bug may fall more on the line of "local user config", or do you have an
idea for an action we should take on addressing it in packaging?

Can you ask them for their /etc/apt/sources.list and
`ls /etc/apt/sources.list.d`?

The libzip version they reference is pretty ancient for a jammy
installation, and I wonder if they've installed 'diff-pdf' from a PPA
that pulled something old in. If so, use of ppa-purge to remove 3rd
party PPAs might be worth considering.

I was a bit late for the party here :)

I subscribed myself and replied to this one asking for more information

issue.

I then set this one to incomplete. Sorry for the noise (this thread kept
going while I was writing replies/trying to reproduce the issue). Feel

 LP: #1959581 - (New) [ocfs2-tools] - OCFS2 intermittently not

Interesting bug but I am not sure what more we can do here. Sergio
already replied and the reporter got back. To which, I replied as
well but there's not much information which can help us assess the
bug. I've asked the reporter if they can help reproduce this in 21.10
as well. But that said, Sergio, could you please take a look at this
once again and see if there's anything you might know about?

 LP: #1895799 - (New) [amavisd-new] - pkgstripfiles doesn't
 respect override_dh_installchangelogs targets

Athos already replied to the bug. I added a comment, too, stating
that it's reproducible in the devel release, too, but is working
fine in Debian. Added server-todo for someone to take a look.

I also subscribed the team there.

I added amavisd-new to that bug as a tracker/reminder that it will need
a rebuild once the pkgbinarymangler issue is fixed (there may be other
packages affected). IMHO, it seems that fixing the bug in
pkgbinarymangler is the right approach here. In this case, I am not sure
if we really want this one in server-todo.

Yep, that's certainly right. Like I mentioned in step 0 there are for
sure a variety of ways to do this, this should be taken as just one of
multiple examples. When I was maintaining X.org we unfortunately could
not rely on -dbgsym packages as ddebs weren't available for video
drivers, and users had to use a different approach to get debug symbols.
You describe another common use case. I imagine there's many more...

Interesting, this is the first I've heard of pull-lp-ddebs, but that
definitely sounds quite relevant to this.

Agreed. Let's use the PR as a starting point for accumulating more tips
and advice:

https://github.com/canonical/ubuntu-maintainers-handbook/pull/38

Thanks everyone who's provided feedback so far. Please provide
copyedits to the above so we can capture the best advice.

Note this (using ddebs repo) only works if the crash resulted with the
latest version of all associated packages; in a normal support
situation where at least some package versions (that are relevant to
what caused the crash, e.g. application package and dep libs) are not
the latest, the ddebs repo unfortunately isn't useful since it only
provides the dbgsyms for the latest package versions.

It's frequently more helpful to simply use pull-lp-ddebs to get the
specific dbgsyms for the package versions that generated the crash
file.

Of course, hopefully eventually someone (*ahem* sergiodj) will get an
Ubuntu debuginfod server set up, which would allow direct access to
the appropriate dbgsyms, but that's not available yet.

Here's a paint-by-numbers way to get stacktraces from .crash files:

0. Enable debug symbols. Various ways to do this, one way is to append
ddebs to your apt sources:

$ echo "deb http://ddebs.ubuntu.com focal main restricted universe
multiverse" | sudo tee -a /etc/apt/sources.list
$ echo "deb http://ddebs.ubuntu.com focal-updates main restricted universe
multiverse" | sudo tee -a /etc/apt/sources.list

$ sudo apt install ubuntu-dbgsym-keyring
$ sudo apt update

1. Install package with debug symbols

$ sudo apt install bind9 bind9*-dbgsym

Often there are also secondary libs or deps with more syms we'll
need. This examines the binary for other possible dbgsym's:

$ sudo apt install debian-goodies
$ sudo apt install $(find-dbgsym-packages /usr/sbin/named 2>/dev/null)

The following NEW packages will be installed:
  libcap2-dbgsym libcom-err2-dbgsym libgcc-s1-dbgsym libicu67-dbgsym
libjson-c5-dbgsym libkeyutils1-dbgsym
  libkrb5-dbg liblmdb0-dbgsym liblzma5-dbgsym libmaxminddb0-dbgsym
libxml2-dbgsym zlib1g-dbgsym

2. Download the .crash file to a tmp directory

$ mkdir /tmp/bind9-crash
$ cd /tmp/bind9-crash
$ wget
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bind9/+bug/1954854/+attachment/5551855/+files/_usr_sbin_named.114.crash

3. Register the package with the crash file

$ cat <(echo "Package: bind9") _usr_sbin_named.114.crash >
bind9_named.114.crash

Apport-retrace complains if the package isn't specified, but apport
hooks don't insert it, so you have to do it manually. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

4. Doublecheck that your installed version matches the reporter's
version exactly:

$ apt-cache policy bind9 | grep '^  Installed'
  Installed: 1:9.16.1-0ubuntu2.9

Unfortunately the .crash file doesn't include the version number,
but the LP bug report will show it:

 Package: bind9 1:9.16.1-0ubuntu2.9

5. Retrace symbols

$ sudo apt-get install apport-retrace
$ apport-retrace bind9_named.114.crash

The above command inserted an empty 'separator: ' line into the crash
file, which apport-unpack will choke on, so delete that line:

$ sed -i '/^separator: *$/d' ./bind9_named.114.crash

6. Unpack crash

$ apport-unpack bind9_named.114.crash crash-114

The 'crash-114/' subdirectory will now include a ThreadStacktrace file
that hopefully(!) should have a usable backtrace. This one looks
great but the full stacktrace is rather TMI.

$ wc -l crash-114/ThreadStacktrace
415 crash-114/ThreadStacktrace

7. (Advanced) GDB

$ apt-get source bind9
$ cd bind9-9.16.1/

$ apport-retrace --gdb /tmp/bind9-crash/bind9_named.114.crash

This will give you an interactive gdb session on the reporter's
coredump. For example, with this particular crash, we can get a
simple backtrace:

(gdb) bt

Here's an update: we couldn't find anything worthwhile from the
upstream tracker or changelog or anything and neither of us have
enough experience with crash files. I couldn't really figure out
what's happening based on the data provided. Maybe someone else would
know? Either way, I've tagged the bug as server-triage-discuss to
discuss it later on.

2022-01-07 Thread Utkarsh Gupta
Bugs last updated on 2022-01-06 (Thursday)
Date range identified as: "Friday triage"
Found 18 bugs

Whilst most are under control, here's a few
worth mentioning:

  LP: #1954854 - (Incomplete) [bind9] - bind
  9.16.1-ubuntu on ubuntu 20.04 randomly
  exits with [...]

The bug reporter got back with some logs
and files collected via apport. Since the
bug is not easily reproducible, I am not quite
sure what's the best way forward. That said,
me/Paride are looking into it.

  LP: #1955413 - *(Confirmed) [containerd] -
  Update to containerd 1.5.9

That seems to be a fair ask and I know we're
going to update the entire container stack
in sometime. I mentioned the same and
subscribed Lucas Kanashiro to the bug.

The reporter got back and it seems the issue is legit. Would anyone
have the resources and the bandwidth to reproduce and see where things
regressed? I'll simultaneously loop in ~Security to TAL if the
security update(s) didn't cause this regression or something.

It would be preferable to adjust the apport hook (if needed) and add a
Launchpad bug pattern. Then users can be pointed to some text about it
(eg. pointers to fixing it or getting further help) but we won't get bug
reports.

Is that possible in this case?

A couple worth mentioning:

  LP: #1945763 - (New) [dovecot] - dovecot:
Fail to build against OpenSSL 3.0

Set it to triaged and bumped the importance
to high. Hopefully someone should be able
to TAL at this one.

  LP: #1949565 - (Confirmed) [mysql-8.0] -
Cannot connect anymore to Azure Database

I am not sure how to reproduce this bug
so I need a bit of help here. Since two
people mentioned the same thing happening,
maybe it'd be a legit bug? Either way, since
I don't have enough resources to reproduce,
so I've left the bug as-is. Could someone please
TAL at this? TIA.

^ is that a record now!?

Whilst I got all the bugs in the world today, only
3 were worth mentioning:

  LP: #1947141 - (New) [monitoring-plugins] -
  monitoring-plugins-standard check_mysql missing

Interesting bug. Focal has the mentioned file in the
package, and Impish as well. Only missing in Hirsute.
Further investigation with and by Paride revealed that
it's because of the mysql-8.0 version and simply a
no-change rebuild now should fix that. We've already
uploaded the fix! \o/

LP: #1947165 - (New) [nmap] - nmap crashes
  when scanning /24 subnet

Valid bug. Thanks to Miriam for helping in finding
the same upstream bug and the fixing commit. I've
asked the reporter to forward the same bug in Debian
since we're in a sync and that as soon as this is
fixed in Debian (via a new version or otherwise),
we'll have the fix automatically. Given that there's
a very easy way around this, it isn't worth an SRU.

  LP: #1947204 - (New) [apache2] - rpackage
  apache2 2.4.46-4ubuntu1.3 failed to install/upgrade:
  installed apache2 package post-installation script
subprocess returned error exit status 1

Couldn't reproduce and so asked the reporter to provide
more information and marked this as incomplete. At the
same time, provided the reporter with the plausible
workaround to the problem. Likely a local configuration
issue.

FWIW, this is a known issue. The credentials to download packages from ESM
are stored in a 0600 root:root file, so normal non-root users cannot read
them, which means the apt-get source command must be run as root. I'm
pretty sure there is a bug about this already, still open. My suggestion
would be for people affected by this to create a group and chmod 0640
root: that file, if they want non-root users to download ESM source
packages.

Friday bug triage

2021-07-23 Thread Utkarsh Gupta
Bugs last updated on 2021-07-22 (Thursday)
Date range identified as: "Friday triage"
Found 13 bugs

I did this bug triage w/ Miriam. Most of the bugs
are under control or are being actively tracked.
The only bugs worth mentioning are:

1. LP: #1937141 - (New) [mysql-8.0] - package mysql-server-8.0
   8.0.25-0ubuntu0.20.04.1 failed to install/upgrade: installed
   mysql-server-8.0 package post-installation script subprocess
   returned error exit status 1

The reporter got their keys messed up and thus the error and
thus the bug. Marked it as "Incomplete", asking for more
information but also provided a link to similar upstream ticket
which documents the solution.

2. LP: #1937218 - (Confirmed) [mysql-5.7] - MySQL Server
   Multiple Vulnerabilities

Pinged the Security team to see who's working on this. Marc said
they're taking care of this so I didn't do anything here.

3. LP: #1937286 - (New) [containerd] - containerd depends on
   unreleased docker19 package in focal

The reporter was trying to use the newer containerd with the
older docker.io (that is, not the recent SRU). We triaged
this bug post-standup together with Kanashrio. Marked it
as "Incomplete" and asked for more information.

4. LP: #1937293 - (New) [postgresql-12] - package postgresql-12
(not installed) failed to install/upgrade: el subproceso
instalado paquete postgresql-12 script post-removal devolvió
el código de salida de error 10

The reporter seems to have postgresql-13 installed from third
party sources, et al, and is trying to install postgresql-12
via apt. :P
Marked this bug as "Incomplete" and suggested the user to
purge the third-party packages (at least, postgresql-13)
and then do an installation of postgresql-12 via apt.

5. LP: #1937316 - (New) [ubuntu-advantage-tools] - Cannot
download source packages provided by Ubuntu ESM

Pinged the other squad which looks at ua-tools, so they'll
look at this one. We didn't do anything to the bug.

2021-07-09 Thread Utkarsh Gupta
Bugs last updated on 2021-07-08 (Thursday)

Found 14 bugs

Whist most of them seem to be under control, the ones
worth mentioning are:

1. LP: #1934992 - (New) [rsync] - rsync 3.2.x in Groovy
   depends on broken libxxhash 0.7.x

The reporter was trying to manually install rsync from
Groovy to Focal but not installing a new libxxhash at
the same time. Whilst I believe this is an invalid bug
report, I set it to "incomplete" to leave some space
for discussion, et al.

2. LP: #1934998 - (New) [mysql-8.0] - package
   mysql-server 8.0.25-0ubuntu0.20.04.1 failed to
install/upgrade: problèmes de dépendances - laissé
   non configuré

A bug report in French! \o/
The usual thing here, marked the bug report as incomplete
because there's no sufficient information or anything.

3. LP: #1935053 - (New) [php7.4] - package php7.4-cli
   7.4.3-4ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: gatilhos
   em loop, abandonado

A bug report in Portuguese! \o/
(by this speed, I am going to be a multilingual v soon!)
Anyway, marked this one as incomplete because as per the
logs, it looks like a local issue and I couldn't reproduce
it either. Asked for more details.

This is related to LP: #1929786. It "looks" like the hostname

dots are added and then the upgrade/installation problem happens.

Since I couldn't reproduce the problem, I asked for more information
and subscribed myself. Simultaneously, asked the reporter
to forward this to Debian as well.

Aah, I see! However, I could reproduce the first half of the bug in a
fresh LXD VM so I believe this could be a valid bug, provided the
reporter gives some more information on this.

I don't know if it's related, but there has always been a slow but
steady stream of reports where users have misconfigured their system
hostname and this causing postfix to explode.

LP: #1929786 - (New) [postfix] - Postfix Local only

Interesting bug. I can partly reproduce this (that is,
there are 2 dots indeed added to the hostname) but it
doesn't fail to upgrade, et al, as the user claims.
I've further asked for a reproducer but I guess it does
seem to be an actual bug. Furthermore, I've asked the
reporter to forward this bug to Debian since we're in
sync and might SRU depending upon the patch, risks, etc.

This bug received an update roughly after 2 years.
Another user who might've hit this bug did some
debugging and reported his findings. I've further
forwarded the findings to the Debian bug, reported
in 2017 and CC'ed the maintainer, who's also the
upstream maintainer.

Friday bug triage

2021-05-17 Thread Utkarsh Gupta
Bugs last updated on 2021-05-13 (Thursday)
Date range identified as: "Friday triage"
Found 23 bugs

Whist most of them seem to be under control, the ones worth
mentioning are:

LP: #1928367 - (New) [openvpn] - openvpn postinst script restarts with
init.d, resulting in duplicate openvpn processes

Focal-only bug. Fixed in other releases.
The fix is trivial, added bitesize tag but didn't tag as "server-next"
since the importance is "Low" and we have a bunch of important bugs
pending in our server-next queue. That said, I did mention that it
could be SRU'd and mentioned the fixing commit, too.

LP: #1928290, #1928297, #1928329, #1928340 - A bunch of mysql-8.0 bugs

All of them are either invalid or duplicate of existing bugs.
Mentioned a workaround for each of them (either SO or some other forum).

I'll further mention this at our standup.

It's good to shout this out, although I'm less worried. Every Ubuntu
user on Xenial will have received this update, so if there were a real
problem I'd expect significantly more reports. I think we're probably
getting reports from the subset of people who already had broken
installations.

However, it's definitely worth keeping an eye on.

Now that we received yet another same bug (LP: #1927905), I am a bit

As an aside, if this is true, what's interesting is that it's sort of a
regression for users who had broken Python installations before, but are
now impacted more than they were before because ubuntu-advantage-tools
has switched to Python rather than bash.

Yeah, I'd like to believe so. The reporter also mentions and I quote,
"My PC doesn't work regularly, It crashes very frequently, by stopping
the possibility tu use the PC cause of a block of the desktop." ->
which doesn't inspire a lot of confidence in the bug report after
seeing the logs.

I wonder if this is due to a broken local Python installation - either
caused by corrupting the dpkg-managed installation by using upstream
sources over the top, or by overriding dpkg dependency warnings?

Friday bug triage report

2021-04-16 Thread Utkarsh Gupta
Bugs last updated on 2021-04-15 (Thursday)
Date range identified as: "Friday triage"
Found 25 bugs

Whist most of them seem to be under control, the ones noteworthy are:

### https://pad.lv/1924597 - (New) [openssh] - package openssh-server
1:8.3p1-1ubuntu0.1 failed to install/upgrade [...]

It's a local issue where the reporter manually deleted the
/etc/ssh/sshd_config file and hence facing the problems. Marked as
invalid with proper reasoning and also mentioned the fix for this.

### https://pad.lv/1924618 - (New) [fetchmail] - add a delete after
option

### https://pad.lv/1924622 - (New) [fetchmail] - add a security
feature to randomize the fetch schedule

Both the above bugs are rather a request for upstream and nothing
Ubuntu-specific. Marked as invalid with proper reasoning and asked the
reporter to instead report this upstream (and provided a link to do
so!).

other was marked as invalid. The only interesting one was:

Friday bug triage - 26th Feb 2021

2021-02-26 Thread Christian Ehrhardt
I was checking 38 bugs today which is a lot for a friday.
But it turned out that a lot of that buzz was due to plenty of
cases being re-checked and marked as released with the Hirsute
feature freeze happening yesterday.

Some needed a bit of triage, worth to mention are two of them

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/base-files/+bug/1916935
Reported as a glibc/postgresql issue but actually a change in bionic
base files back in 2018 changing how LC_* variables are set on a login
shell. We'll leave that to foundations, but I wanted to raise awareness
when triaging bugs in regard to LC_ settings.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/squid/+bug/1860807
This is another instance of the "is openssl linkable" legal discussion.
There was now the update that on Debian this was decided to be a system
lib (as in fedora) and therefore Debians squid will change to that.
We have had other cases related to this - once this is really settled
also on the Ubuntu side we can follow the Debian change on this.

Friday bug Triage - 23rd October

2020-10-22 Thread Christian Ehrhardt
On today's triage I had 12 bugs to look at.
Given that it is release day I expected more of a flurry of
upgrade-triggered
bugs but it seems that might wait until after the weekend. Most bugs were
under
control as usual and a few needed a small comment or status update.
But none were worth to be mentioned in further detail here.

Looking forward to Monday triage then ...
