Re: [ubuntu-studio-users] troubles installing 22.04

2022-05-10 Thread Mac
Just another data point. Not btrfs in this case.

I did a uefi install, both "take the default" and partitioned by hand on a
new ssd. The usb stick boots fine, install proceeds withoutn issue.

The ssd wouldn't boot.

Attempted three times with same result. The file structure on the ssd looks
normal. (with a fat32 as the first partition, then ext4, then swap, then
ext4) So, I'm still searching for the secret sauce.

This is a System76 laptop that has always been an issue installing uefi
OS's. Except Manjaro, which just works.

Re: [ubuntu-studio-users] Studio controls and usb device

2021-08-20 Thread Mac
Thanks! Yes, it is an Allen&Heath.

The query was more if there were any ideas if there was some new behavior
or setting in Studio Controls.

This mixer worked by just plugging in the USB in previous revs of
UbuntuStudio and Studio Controls. Though this is a different PC.

I had tinkered with it for some time before posting, that's how I
determined it only worked with specific steps.

No matter, it is an additional step or two to get working, but, that is not
a show stopper.

[ubuntu-studio-users] Studio controls and usb device

2021-08-15 Thread Mac
I'm working with a fresh install of Ubuntu Studio 21.04.

I can use Studio Controls to get my A&H USB mixer I/O to show sources/sinks
in Carla, but only after selecting it in Extra devices and Apply settings.

It doesn't appear when plugged in.

And the device does not show at all if it is set to USB master.

Though, when it is unplugged, it is listed as unplugged. If it is then
plugged in it show as being plugged in but does not get any source/sink
added.

It does appear to work fine when it is there, it just isn't there without
manual intervention.

Am I doing something wrong? Or am I missing something?

Re: [ubuntu-studio-users] 20.04 device issues

2020-07-12 Thread Mac
Ferrari, thanks. For the record I've been a forum member for some years...

And now after a few days I have found, after some disk errors forced me to
install, rather than run from live usb stick, the inputs and outputs of the
A&H mixer are fine.

(I will note, the disk issue was caused when I installed 20.04 from the
live usb stick to an external drive and the install process clobbered the
efi boot partition on the 19.10 internal hard drive. None of the typical
grub fixes seemed to work. Interestingly, the boot partition was there, as
was the 19.10 partition. And, I had backed up all the important stuff
before fooling with it. So, something to watch out for in the future.)

[ubuntu-studio-users] 20.04 device issues

2020-07-10 Thread Mac
Hi,

I have a A&H USB mixer.

As far as I can remember, all I ever did with 19.04 & 19.10 was plug it in
and 2 inputs and 2 outputs showed up in Carla.

I gave 20.04 a try today (live on the same computer as 19.10) and when I
plug the device in it shows 2 inputs, no outputs.

Am I forgetting what I did eons ago? (yeah I know it was really only a year
or so... ;) )

Or is there something new to do in 20.04?

Thanks,
Mac

Re: [ubuntu-studio-users] ubuntustudio and KDE

2020-06-25 Thread Mac
Hi,

I'm not sure I'm too upset either way.

I apologise, I did go to the archive and didn't find the beginning of this
thread...but am curious, and I do remember the early posts...but, didn't
take note:
Can you reiterate why the change to KDE is being made?

I will say I like the clean look of xfce and find KDE, in general, more
"candy crush"ish or "Chiclets" to look at.

Also, again, just so I'm clear: I should not (when 20.10 arrives) install
UbuntuStudio 20.10 and then xfce on it (this is what I do in vanilla,
Debian, but I, of course don't have Ubuntu studio there either...). Again,
just curious, is UBS that entwined in the desktop?

(Note: to date, I've not paid much attention to desktops in general. To be
honest I have better things to do than tweak colors, and backgrounds, etc.
I'm one of those users who don't have ANY games on my PC's...and yes, I
have far too many Linux machines on my home net...double digits. )

Regards,
Mac

Interesting. I have a UBS 19.04 install that, after a recent apt update,
started giving huge numbers of "BUG: scheduling while atomic" errors at
boot and at shutdown. Runs fine though. And no errors with generic kernel,
or liquorix low latency. 🤔

[ubuntu-studio-users] Kernel bug?

2020-01-12 Thread Mac
Hi,

(note: the following takes place when I boot the low-latency kernel, no
similar messages when I use the generic kernel...)
(also, yes, it's 19.04...I have other machines with 19.10 on they have
other issues. So, I have not upgraded this particular laptop to 19.10.)

After a recent apt update/upgrade on 19.04 UbuntuStudio I started to see:
BUG: scheduling while atomic: Cache2 I/O/1999/0x0002

When I boot, dmesg shows (only grabbed part of the output, there's a
lot...):

[ubuntu-studio-users] Ubuntustudio controls and 19.10

Hi,

I have a fresh install of UBS 19.10.

If I start the browser and play a youtube video, the stream shows in the

But, the local hardware is not making noise.

If I try to launch UBS controls, it appears to hang. If I launch it from
the terminal, I get:

[ubuntu-studio-users] UBS 19.10 and QT widgets

2019-12-24 Thread Mac
Hi,

I have UBS 19.10 installed on a couple PC/laptops.

I also have a laptop that has 19.04.

When using FreeCAD on the 19.04 laptop, there is no issue with QTCombobox
widgets.

Under 19.10, some combobox are vertically squish so that the box is
unreadable when the dialog opens. The focus is in the combobox, and I can
(blind) type into the box.

This does not happen when I run the same version appimage of FreeCAD.

I realize this is far out for a Ubuntu Studio list question...just
wondering if there are any ideas or other experiences like this.

[ubuntu-studio-users] UBS 19.10 and AMD gpu's

2019-11-15 Thread Mac
Hi,
Installed 19.10 on one of machines. (complete disk wipe and fresh install
of 19.10, not an upgrade, previous incarnation of the machine had 19.04,
don't remember issues then)

Machine has a radeon gpu card.

When I try to run Blender it says OpenGL 3.3 or higher required.

glxinfo fails, basically reporting nothing.

It appears the AMD/Radeon drivers with OpenGL support aren't being loaded.

modinfo shows the radeon as a basic vga vesa card...

Any ideas how to fix this?

Re: [ubuntu-studio-users] Upgrade to 19.10

2019-10-31 Thread Mac
I may have been misinformed. But isn't qjackctl being deprecated with Carla
being the future? Just curious. I used qjackctl for years.

Re: [ubuntu-studio-users] Upgrade to 19.10

2019-10-31 Thread Mac
hmm...just another data point, I have been running 19.10 on two PCs for
several weeks.

I have had no crashing issues. And, I routinely stream from Youtube at the
same time as playing local audio.

The UB Studio controls let me set up jack to run all the time with a pulse
audio source/sink that get all the system audio. UBS Controlss just sets it
up and it it's there evey time I boot.

I like Carla and have not even looked at QJackctl for months.

I had some trouble with firewire. I have not had more time to fiddle with
that.

Mac

Re: [ubuntu-studio-users] Upgrade from 19.04 to 19.10

2019-10-27 Thread Mac
I usually just "sudo apt install ". That usually fixes
the hold.

Then do update/upgrade again for good measure. Then start the system
upgrade with apt.

Of course you could, probably, apt uninstall the held package as well.

Disclaimer: I'm not an expert, this is just my experience...YMMV 😉

[ubuntu-studio-users] Ubuntu Studio Controls and jack start anomalies

2019-09-25 Thread Mac
Hi,

I've been using UBS 19.04 for a while. I have 3 different machines.

One I've noted no issues...though I've not messed with it that much.

The other two I've noted:

- Desktop with firewire audio device and onboard sound.
-- boot/login
-- UBS controls are set to start jack automatically, but it doesn't
-- if I start Carla, it shows the audio I/O of the FW device but not as
jack sink/source, nothing else
--- (FW device shows 1394 connects, and rate changes to 48 from 44)
-- if us UBS controls to restart jack, no audio I/O shown
-- now reboot/login
-- use UBS controls to restart jack
-- now all FW audio AND the onboard audio, AND Pulse source/sink appear in
Carla

- Laptop with onboard audio and external USB audio
-- boot/login
-- start Carla, all onboard and USB audio I/O present and Pulse source/sink
-- now connect pulse to onboard audio
-- if the first sound source used is via pulse where the source is, for
example from a browser
sounds fine.
-- But if the pulse out is connected to the USB out. (i.e the pulse out is
now going to both onboard and USB) The next sound played sound fine on the
USB device, but is digital noise on the onboard.
-- But, if both are connected before and sound source is played, then both
onboard and USB sound fine.

I now know to avoid these situations. But, I'm wondering if there is
something I'm doing that is causing them to begin with...🤔

Thanks!!

That got it.

I don't remember changing the configuration. But, likely when I did 12 to
14 (could have been even earlier...I definitely remember 10.04 on this
pc... ;) ) I probably declined the update to Whisker.

[ubuntu-studio-users] Whisker panel ?

2019-08-26 Thread Mac
I have more than one PC running UBS. I've upgraded all but one to 19.04.
They all have the newer whisker panel with the favorites, search bar, etc.

Today I upgraded the last one. It is a laptop that has been running UBS, I
think since 12.04. Even with 18.04, it had an older version of the panel.
No favorites, etc.

After upgrade to 19.04 it still has the old look panel.

Is there a way to get the newer whisker look?

I'm not at the machine at the moment. Apropos showed whisker is there. But,
if I remember, when I entered whisker-menu in a terminal it complained
something about dbus server...

Thanks, Mac

[ubuntu-studio-users] On board sound has left the building...

2019-08-11 Thread Mac
Hi,

I'm sending this because I'm drawing a blank as to if I ever figured it out
before. (I've had enough coffee, so it must be age related memory loss.)
:(

I'm running UbuntuStudio 19.04. And have been using Ubuntu Studio Controls
exclusively for several months.

Until yesterday things were working pretty well in my studio. But, I took
my system to a gig and the USB mixer wouldn't boot. (So much for Allen &
Heath being high end gear...but, that another story.)

Before this debacle, I could route Pulse out to both my USB rig and onboard
speakers (simultaneously) , no problem. (I typically do this with Carla.)

Anyhow, after attempting to use the headphone out on my laptop to get
analog out to another mixer and tweaking UBS Controls I remembered I'd
never been able to get the headphone out to work, only the onboard speakers.

So, now back in the studio, I can only get sound from the usb rig. I can
route to the onboard (i.e. system:playback) but nothing comes from the on
board speakers.

In short, usb works but onboard audio seems to have been disabled. (here's
the memory loss...) what commands can I use to see whats up with the
onboard sound hardware? (I fired up alsamixer and made sure the usual
suspects were un-muted and up...)

Thanks,
Mac

Re: [ubuntu-studio-users] Audio Problems (was: Updates for June 2019)

2019-06-13 Thread Mac
Indeed and thanks for the assist.

Not sure where that came from. I may have installed it back on 18.04.

But, it wasn't interfering back then...and I didn't do anything between
18.04, 18.10, 19.04.

So, what made it start grabbing the analog audio automagically...I don't
know.

I will definitely keep adevices.sh handy.

Re: [ubuntu-studio-users] Updates for June 2019

2019-06-13 Thread Mac
I've had some time to mess with this to see what's up with my on board
audio.

I did an alsa-info while booted to the upgraded 19.04.

Then downloaded and built a fresh live ubs 16.04. Then booted that and did
an alsa-info.

A diff of the resulting files show the live is running
kernel: 5.0.0-13-lowlatency
ALSA Driver version: k5.0.0-13-lowlatency
And the onboard sound works.

The upgraded version is running
kernel: 5.0.0-16-lowlatency
ALSA Driver version: k5.0.0-16-lowlatency
And onboard sound does not work.

Can't see any other obvious difference in the alsa-info output.

Any thoughts on if this is the issue and if so, how I might fix it?

Mac

Re: [ubuntu-studio-users] Updates for June 2019

2019-06-11 Thread Mac
I have been tinkering with this a bit...

If, I plug in a usb device I see it in PA controls and the HDMI audio on my
2 monitors shows up, but no onboard audio ports. And when I unplug the usb
it switches to audio to the HDMI in the selected monitor. Sometimes it
shows both HDMI monitors, sometimes not, not sure what's up with that.)

Jack is not started (neither Qjackctl or Carla show anything) and sometimes
in the syslog I see error trying to start alsa with the hw:0 (that's the
onboard audio?)

To be honest I'm thoroughly confused at this point. :(

Re: [ubuntu-studio-users] Updates for June 2019

2019-06-10 Thread Mac
Sorry, didn't mean to imply UBS controls wasn't displaying anything. I
meant that when I click stop, start, etc. no errors are shown in system
log. And JACK does not start.

QJackctl can't start JACK either. It pops a error dialog saying Jack server
won't start.

And, as noted the onboard devices show up as selections in UBS controls,
but don't get any audio.

Re: [ubuntu-studio-users] Updates for June 2019

2019-06-10 Thread Mac
So, since I was running 18.04 I figured I'd get up to date since 18.10 is
getting end of life.

So, on my desktop I did the backport purge and then did do-release-upgrade
twice. And I now have a working desktop on 19.04. No errors, smooth
upgrade. Sound works as before. Cool!

But (you knew there was a but, right?), did the same on my laptop, no
errors. But, no audio devices, the PA Volume control shows only a dummy
device on the Output Devices (though, I get an AudioIPC Server on the
Playback tab when I play from say YouTube in a browser and it shows sound.)

JACK won't start, UBS Controls does not complain about anything.

Audio worked fine with with 18.04 and the UBS Controls backport...

Where do I look for clues?

Re: [ubuntu-studio-users] 18.04 backport, Ubuntustudio controls and ffado

2019-04-25 Thread Mac
Yeah, I thought about looking at the code...but, haven't got around to
finding it yet. (No matter how many things I check off my todo list it
never gets shorter...)

As for the on board hardware...I kinda guessed since it worked with alsa
and alsa was being directed to a pulse sink/source it was going to act the
same...silly me. :)
(Every time I go off trying to really understand how it all fits together,
digging into alsa config files and such, I get to a high level grok and run
away. ;) )

Re: [ubuntu-studio-users] 18.04 backport, Ubuntustudio controls and ffado

2019-04-25 Thread Mac
After much messing around, on two different installs of 18.04 with the UBS
back port with UBS Controls...

I can find no way to get the settings I select in Ubuntu Studio Controls to
be retained.

In the case of the laptop I tested the onboard audio works, but, there is
no way to activate the headphone outputs. And, since JACK is started from
UBS Controls, I can'[t even get back to the no JACK setup, which did work
when the headphones were plugged in.

On both PC's the onboard mic input does not seem to sow up on the capture
ports, even though 2 are shown. If I have another, capture, for instance,
from a USB or firewire mixer, the mic capture works.

As a side note. On the desktop, the mobo has 8 outputs, but when these show
up in, say Carla, via JACK, only the first two output sound.

Since UBS Controls won't allow me to switch back and forth from JACK/ALSA
it makes it difficult to really test things.

Are there config files that I can edit by hand to force UBS Controls to
behave? All the files I've found have not helped.

[ubuntu-studio-users] 18.04 backport, Ubuntustudio controls and ffado

2019-04-21 Thread Mac
Hi,

I have never been able to start and when needed restart jack successfully
on a particular PC. When I would start Qjackctl and start with ffado it
would work fine, but, if for any reason I needed to stop (in Qjackctl) and
start again, it would just complain it couldn't connect to the server.
Reboot and it was good for one start again. (And, I've always wondered why
at some point I started seeing my AF12 available as 12 channels in pulse
audio control. I have recently learned this was because firew was added to
the alsa stack.)

So when I saw the backport that added Ubuntu Studio Controls if figured it
would be good to give it a go.

And it appears to work ok. Start/start as needed...great. It appears to be
using the alsa stack with jack...good, I guess?

But, when I started to get into things, during playback I would
occasionally get a loud digital sounding burst (and I mean loud,
speaker/eardrum damaging loud).

I had never had such issues with jack/ffado. So I set out to try just
jack/ffado, no alsa.

Unfortunately:
- I can't seem to stop jack/alsa from starting.
- Unbuntu Studio Controls will not save the selections for Auto Start Jack
or Bridge ALSA, etc.

If I issue a jack_control stop, set the device, etc. then jack_control
start it complains: Generic failed to open server.

Any ideas why UnStudio Controls won't save my selections?

Any guidance on how to not use alsa and use ffado?

Thanks,
Mac

Re: [ubuntu-studio-users] Problem booting 18.04 DVD and workaround

2018-06-09 Thread Mac
Interestingly, since the failed upgrade and subsequent complete install on
my laptop, I've done the upgrade on two of my other PC's with no issues.
(As for the laptop, it appears to be something about having 3 monitors
while upgrading nvidia that causes a login loop after. If the extract
monitors are added after the fact, all is good...thanks nvidia!)

I have, on the other hand, found one annoying issue with 18.04 (in general,
not studio). I use Universal Devices java web app to access my home
controller.
Unfortunately it needs Java 9 or above. And apparently only 8 is supported
on 18.04 until September. Attempting to run the app under 8 and it throws a
security error.

Oh well... :(

Re: [ubuntu-studio-users] Start menu and other issues

2017-10-18 Thread Mac
Hi Thomas,

Thanks for your reply.

I discovered alacarte after much googling and have restored my whisker menu.

I had not found the guide you linked, but it is now bookmarked.

If I'm not mistaken this is the same .desktop file content used on the
Raspberry Pi desktop.

I am working on the firewire issue. I have a thread going on the Linux
Audio Users list and am making progress.

[ubuntu-studio-users] Start menu and other issues

2017-10-16 Thread Mac
Ok, to followup on my last post.

During googling I stumbled on the name of the menu thing to be 'Whisper
Menu'.

And discovered that, Whisper Menu is apparently not quite working.

>From this forum post:

https://askubuntu.com/questions/791393/restoring-the-default-settings-for-whisker-menu-in-ubuntu-studio-16-04/817301

It can be restored using the following:

cp /etc/xdg/xdg-ubuntustudio/menus/xfce-applications.menu
/home/yourusername/.config/menus/

It does indeed put it back, loosing any changes you've done. The files
involved are xml, so nigh impossible for mere mortals to figure out.

On getting ffado to work, I've not had any success. All the packages appear
to be there, but, dbus won't start jack.

ffado-diag says a bunch of packages, like libraw1394, aren't found. But apt
says they're there.

lspci say the firewire card is there.

lsmod | grep fire
firewire_ohci 40960 0
firewire_core 65536 1 firewire_ohci
crc_itu_t 16384 1 firewire_core

[ubuntu-studio-users] Start menu and other issues

2017-10-15 Thread Mac
I have just installed UBS 16.04, well actually re-installed...twice.

There are a couple issues.

The first, and why I installed 3 times.

I don't know the formal name for the UBS icon in the upper left corner the
functions like the Start button in windows. In the UBS case, clicking on it
opens the window where you can select programs to run or open a tree view
to select from similar programs (i.e. Audio Production, or Development)

In any case, I opened it and selected the settings icon. Then selected the
Menu Editor.

I added the program I wanted to the Development branch and saved and exited.

Now clicking on the UBS icon has lost the Audio Production, Video
Production, branches ans several others. Now there is a Graphics and
Multimedia branch. But, if I go back to the Menu Editor the original
branches are there but no contents.

The menu editor is MenuLibre.

Any idea if there is a revert option? I've not found anything.

On a different note. There is a firewire port on this PC. But, UBS doesn't
seem to load the os module for it.

This new behavior for me...I have, with arms length, at least 3 PC's that
have firewire cards and they just worked OOTB. :(

I know I found a write up a while ago that had all the trouble shooting
commands for firewire...but, it's been so long since I had any issues it's
lost. If anyone can point me I'd appreciate the help.

Is this a chipset issue?

That said, Paul suggested I give the Ardour ALSA backend a try. (Thanks
Paul, I learned something new about Ardour!)

Unfortunately I got the same results.

So, back to basics, a made a list of things I had and hadn't tried.

Assumptions are the nemesis of trouble shooting. I had grabbed a long-ish
usb cable of unknown origin. When I replaced it with a shorter, brand new
cable the issue went away and seems to work for both JACK and the ALSA only
backend in Ardour.

I assumed if the usb ports were connected the cable was probably ok. Guess
I was wrong. I guess something about the cable was causing high error rates
(capacitance, grounding, shielding, etc.).

Mac

[ubuntu-studio-users] Ardour, X32, and USB

2016-08-08 Thread Mac
Hi All,

Using UBS 16.04, Ardour4, and the USB interface on the Behringer X32.
Lashed up with JACK.

The pc is a intel core i7, and I think I was using the usb3 port.

Recording seems to work well, few if any xruns.

But, playback is a different story. During playback, there are random
clicks (or pops or clacks, how ever it might be described). They don't
appear to be xruns.

The same thing happens when using, say, Clementine to playback, so I'm
guessing it's JACK, USB, or some other subsystem.

Any ideas on what I might try to fix it?

Regards,
Mac

[ubuntu-studio-users] UB Studio laptop?

2015-03-08 Thread Mac
Hi,

I'm starting to look for a new laptop.

I'd like to pick something that will run UB Studio (and possibly have a
firewire port that will support ffado (I'm assuming the TI chipset it is
still the best option?))

That said, anyone want to recommend their favorite?

I've heard mostly positive about the System 76 laptops, but they do have
detractors.

I've run it on my Dell for years, but it has the old Ricoh firewire chipset
and is useless for ffado.

Thoughts?

Mac

Modified default.pa as above and it works.
I now get 2 pulse sink and 2 pulse source, but nothing connected.

Thanks for the help.

(I think) Previously (AV Linux & UBS 12) the Pulse sink and source was
there but not connected.
Then my script connected them where I wanted them to go. The script still
does this, but
the pulse output is already connected to the AF12 ch1 & 2 and then my
script connects them
to ch1 & 2 again. So I want Pulse source & sink, I just don't want it to be
auto connected.

It might be a couple days before I get to actually work on this again.

Thanks for the help.

Well I did try commenting that out. But, the connect didn't go away...but,
I didn't restart pulse either.

Also, I want the Pulse channels, I just don't want them auto connected; I
want to control the connection in my script.

[ubuntu-studio-users] Pulse and Jack

2014-05-06 Thread Mac
I have a script that does a bunch of connections when I start Jack via
Qjackctl.

It connects various things like calf plugins, zita meters/xovers, etc. and
my AF12 into a tri-amp system.

I figured this out under AV Studio, then moved it to UDS 12.04.

The other day I built a system with UBS 14.04.

The script still works, but...

By default when Qjackctl starts jack it auto-magically connects the Pulse
output to the first two channels on my AF12.

Then my script adds my desired connections, except I don't want to two
connections mentioned above.

I don't remember if I actually figured out how to stop the connection
previously.
Or, if it does it differently in 14.04

In any case I have also not been able to find enough info on the web to get
me to the point where I can even find where the auto-magic connection is
happening (and thus figure out how to stop it).

Help an addled old mind. Thanks. ;)

FWIW I installed UBS 14.04 over the weekend.

I use qjackctl with multiple Audiofire12 units and extensive start up
scripts to wire eq's, crossovers, and mixers.

It just worked out of the box. THis rev I didn't even have to go find all
the calf and zita plugins. :)

2013-11-09 Thread Mac
Takashi,

I installed your PPA in a new install of 13.10 with a AF12 that has 5.8
firmware.

I have not done extensive testing but it does appear to work. (Before it
would not even start)

I have various setups and will test as time allows.

Any chance of getting a 12.04 package? (this would allow me to quickly test
on a AF12 with 4.7 firmware)

I don't know if I'll have time in the near future, but I've confirmed up to
three AF12 on the same bus in the past.

Thank you. The package will make it much faster for me to try your patch.

Otherwise I'd need to re-learn how to build the svn trunk...I have done it
before...just been a couple years.

I might be able to test this this weekend.

Re: [ubuntu-studio-users] firewire broken after upgrade

2013-11-06 Thread Mac
Hi Bart,

Can't offer any help. I let the ECHO windows app upgrade one of my 3 AF12's
to 5.8 firmware, now it doesn't work with UbuntuStudio12.04.

I'm waiting until I get some time to build an experiment system so I can
build the svn version of ffado to see if that fixes the firmware rev issue.

I need to figure out how to get the rev of the two that still work...and
find the firmware files. I've seen none of them around, so I either need to
get 5.8 to work or I'll have one that works with windoz and 2 that work
with UBS 12.04. :(

I know I won't be able to look at it until late Nov.

I second Bart's comments. I have, on occasion, had 2 of my 3 AF12's
wired up for live recording for 24 channels for theatrical musicals.
And I've tested with all 3 for a total of 36 channels and it seemed to
be ok, though I've not attempted any 2 hour recordings.

I have talked to Pieter and he recons 3 is about the max you could
expect for firewire, though, that discussion was a couple years ago.

In the past I've toyed with the gstreamer solution. Works ok for one
audio play. For example, when the song starts the divice shows up in
qjack and can be patched to output. But, when the song ends, the
device goes away and a new device appears for the next song. This
appeared to be the default way most apps were using gstreamer to jack.
I found no way around this behavior.

Is flash going away?

Jack and pulse?

2013-02-12 Thread Mac
On 12.x when jack is started by qjackctrl, the local pulse audio
devices show up as sources and sinks.

I have not dug around and figured that out in depth. That's on my todo list.

In my case I also have an AF12 plugged into the firewire port, so in
addition to the pulse sinks/sources, 12 sinks and sources show up as
well.

In addition, I have some scripts that execute when qjack starts that
add and patch some other apps.

If I boot the pc and start qjack, then start a browser with audio
content, it comes through the PA source and goes to the rest. This
works just fine most of the time.

There two situations that cause me some grief:

1.) If I start the browser content, then start qjackctrl, from that
point on no audio from the jack side of the house. (The PA side still
shows, in volume control that it's getting to PA.) I can avoid this by
having a better memory and remembering to start qjack.

2.) If for some reason the stream from the browser dies, for example a
video goes into buffering for too long, the browser and jack appear to
be hung. (I've seen ffado go south in this case and I don't know how
to recover it live either.) In this case, my memory won't help...can't
predict network sluggishness.

In both situations, I've found no way to recover short of reboot.

Is there a way to recover in either case?

Regards,
Mac

Re: new to Ubuntu Studio

2013-02-10 Thread Mac
I use jack primarily. PA caused issues in the past, but in 12.x my PA apps
just show up as sinks/sources in jackctrl and just work alongside my jack
sinks/sources.

So, as noted, it may just work for you. Try it.

Has anyone tried to use these devices with ubs 12.xx?

The Spyder is a calibration sensor for setting monitor color.

It appears some had the spyder3 work with ubuntu, but I've found no
reference to any experience with the newer models.

Had to add my $.02 about pulse audio.
I had lots of issues in 8 thru 11 ub & ubstudio. Enough that I switched to
AV Linux for a while.
But when I tried 12.04 the pa devices just show up in jack along side my
firewire devices and my dsp source/sinks. No problems so far with 12.04 or
12.10 ub studio.

UBS 12.10 Hangs on install

2013-01-10 Thread Mac
Attempting to install on a DellXPS1530.

Whether I live boot and choose install or choose install during boot, after
the dialog for selecting to download updates and mp3 stuff during install
it just sits there.

This machine has had previous version of UBS on it, but currently has only
AVLinux on the hard drive.

I'm looking for ideas on how to proceed to get UBS12

I spent some time last evening looking at a variety of links on the
web and looking through scripts in the /etc/pulse directory and others
and was not able to connect the dots.

I will get the source for pulse and have a look at that. But, I
suspect that will clarify how pulse itself works, I'm not sure if it
will help me with the how the whole thing gets lashed together.

For instance, I found no specific in any of the scripts I looked at
that indicated how, when the qjackctl Start button is clicked, the
Pulse_sink/sources that appear (in my case, left/right front/rear, lf,
aux1/2/3 front/rear, etc.) are specified. And why they are there, but,
the mic in front/rear don't show up. Also, how all 12 ins/outs of the
firewire device also show up, but the qjackctl setup calls this out,
so I'm not surprised it is there.

Actually, I have no feelings either way. When I started using Ubuntu
back at 8.x pulse combined with alsa seemed to be the source of lots
of issues.

When I installed UBStudio12.04 and the pulse sources/sinks just showed
up (along with my firewire devices) and just worked (with no
intervention by me) I was fine with that.

In fact, I never understood, why one would not want all the devices on
the PC to be available for connection in jack. For instance, if I have
12 chans of I/O on a firewire device, two mic inputs on the mobo, 5
chans of ouput on the mobo, and 2 chans of I/O on a usb device, why
wouldn't I want them to show up in jack?

I may never want to use the mobo mic input, but, I'd rather just
choose not to, rather than having to rip out this, that, and the other
thing before I can get to where I can add the mobo mic inputs.

pulse audio & jack

2012-11-14 Thread Mac
When I installed 12.04 UbStudio I was pleased to see pulse audio
played nice with jack. (i.e. when qjackctl starts pulse sinks/sources
show up by default).

Is there any documentation or overview of how this is accomplished?
I'd like to understand and possibly modify what shows up, etc.

Or, can anyone post some ideas on where to start? (I googled a bit
with little success.)

On a related note: if I run/start qjackctl things work fine. If I then
tell qjackctl to stop and choose yes/continue when it prompts about
clients still connected it can't connect when I attempt to start it
again. The message says it can't connect(or start) to the server.

I'm guessing there are stale processes that are not allowing the
restart, but, I'm not real sure where to begin to determine how to
correctly stop jack so it doesn't get it's knickers in twist.

Mac

The have now run configure -enable-experimental, make and sudo make install.

But, for some reason calfjackhost still sees only the original few plugins.

So it built and installed...but , no eq12 which is why I'm on the

Well I didn't just try to copy it from AVL to UBS...

Using any eq is ok, but I had a system configured for doing tri-amp
output and am trying to duplicate it under UBS. And I am using the eq
in calfjackrack.

Building Calf 19, srfftw.h not found

2012-08-26 Thread Mac
Hi,

So I set off to build the Calf 19 plugins under UbuntuStudio 12.04.

The current sticking point is it can't find srfftw.h from FFTW2.

I have the source for FFTW2 from http://www.fftw.org/download.html and
there's no srfftw.h in there either.

I started this because on another distro (AVLinux) the Calf plugins
include a 12 band EQ which runs quite nice with calfjackhost.

But the eq12 plugin seems to have gone into hiding, have been
unsuccessful in my web searches, thus far.
(other than the picture in this

UBS12.04 calfjackhost doesn't seem to have the 12 band eq plugin.

Was it pulled?

Same criteria for me with two AF12's and 10.04. (Though latency was
not an issue since it was record only)

As I've mentioned previously, I've had similar results with AVLinux
4.2 which uses the Liquorix Kernel.

Paul is correct, the Windows community notes plenty of firewire issues.

Unfortunately, I've found no PCI solution that will provide me 24
channels in and still be within my budget. :)

Re: diagnostic tools to trace the reason xruns are happening?

2011-06-06 Thread Mac
I have not followed the previous posts in this thread so my comments
may be tangential...

In the past, the the firewire chipset being used was critical.
Basically, there was limited success with anything other than the TI
chipset.

Multiple identical devices (i.e. 2 AF12's) on the firewire requires word clock.

Mixed devices (i.e. one AF12 and one FIrepod) never worked in my tests
and I don't believe could work.

Re: Has somebody a stable Ubuntu Studio NATTY 64-bit?

2011-05-31 Thread Mac
Well, I sort of agree with both lines of thought here.

1. Having a stable recording platform where there are zero hick-ups of
any kind is important for live recording.

2. In a studio environment there may be many stops, but, the people
paying for the recording time won't be thrilled paying for breaks to
deal with buffer overruns.

That said, I've successfully done 2+ hour recordings of musical
theater events with 24 channels via firewire into Ardour.

That was with Ubuntu 9x, a tweaked kernel from Luke, and locally
compiled latest (at that time) Ardour. I got to that point only after
a lot of help from Paul, Luke and others. I have not attempted
anything like this since then.

FWIW: I did some quick tests with the same hardware using the latest
AVLinux...it just worked out-of-the-box, no tweaks or after install
setups.

tar has been around for as long as *ux.

So it's had plenty of time to mature.

As with many of the vintage *ux cammand line utilities it can be cryptic

Ubuntu Studio 10.04 upgrade report & comments

2010-06-10 Thread Mac McIlvaine
Hi All,

First a quick response to the chief dev's thread.

I would agree with comments about use-ability. If the intent is to
provide a tool to accomplish a task, some assembly required is ok.
But, if the assembly replaces the task...

Learning curve is a different issue and is to be expected with any
complicated tool. This becomes even more important if it is your
livelihood or the customer is sitting idle while you try to minimize
xruns or fiddle with permissions.

That said, UBS has been improving with each release and I applaud
the work that moves it along.

Now my upgrade report:

I had a working system with UB 9.04 with Studio package installed
running for about a year. Later in the year I upgraded to 9.10. In
order to get no xruns I was using a kernel built by Luke McNeil.

I have now done a fresh install of UBS 10.04. After fooling with
some permission issues with JACK and ffado, I got things running
to the point I could set up a test.

I fired up Ardour, added 24 tracks, auto attached to the 24 ports
on my AF12's. Armed all channels and recorded for over an hour with
only 1 xrun.

I may be able to tweak some setting in qjackctl and maybe get to
0 xruns.

Great job guys!

Regards,
Mac

2010-06-02 Thread Mac McIlvaine
Hi,

Just looking at updating from 9.10 to 10.04 and was wondering...

- has 10.04 got an rt kernel?

- has 10.04 incorporated the new firewire stack?

- does ffado use the ne firwire stack?

- does 10.04 have the latest ffado, jack, and Ardour?

I believe this from the wikipedia on the subject describes Ardour's
functionality as a non-destructive editor:

"...non-destructive editing is a form of editing signals where the
original content is not modified in the course of editing - instead
the edits themselves are edited.

A pointer-based playlist — effectively an edit decision list — is
used to keep track of edits. Each time the edited audio or video
is played back or accessed, it is reconstructed from the original
source and the EDL. Although this process is more computationally
intensive than rendering each edit, changing the edits themselves
can be almost instantaneous, and it prevents further generation loss
as the audio or video is edited. ..."

While Audacity does have "undo" it does not operate in the manor
described above.

Both great tools, just different.

Hi from the Ardour web page:

Non-destructive, non-linear editing with unlimited undo

What you describe above is indeed modifying the recording, I don't
believe it is considered "destructive" editing.

Audacity will allow the wave form to be edited on a per sample basis,
actually changing the value of the sample at will. I believe this is
considered "destructive" editing.

I would be happy to be wrong, but I don't think Ardour allows such
detailed editing of the raw data.

Let me state for the record, I'm not flaming anyone or anything. So, let
me play devils advocate for a bit:

To paraphrase a lot of this thread: "F/OSS is for software geeks and
tinkers, so if you want to do creative work, that does not involve
learning or creating software, then go buy ***software application for
whatever creative art you choose*** (i.e. protools, photoshop, Adobe
studio, etc.)"

With this in mind, let's pop over to a home page, for just about any
major app under Ubuntu, for exampl let's choose Ubuntu Studio. The page
announces: "Let your creativity fly..." in big bold letters. Later it
says: "It's easy. Just...". And below that it lists: "Audio, Graphics,
Video".

Software development, system level tweaking, and learning Linux are
mentioned NO WHERE.

Now I searched for the lawyer speak, in small print where it says:
"General knowledge of Linux system admin, software development,
understanding of xwindows, and other geeky stuff may be required before
successful creativity in audio, graphics, or video can be achieved."

Couldn't find it.

Maybe this clause should be there...isn't that what's being implied by
this thread?

Basically, what's said over and over in countless forums is: if you just
want to use F/OSS because you believe it's a better way (i.e. because of
the philosophy) and you can't, for whatever reason, help make it
better(i.e. jump in and write code, fix bugs, write documentation,
etc.), leave us alone. And certainly don't point out bugs or
deficiencies.

Side Note: there is a reason software companies have QA departments that
don't write code and all they do is point out bugs and deficiencies. I
kinda see the user base of any F/OSS app as being this department.

I guess my point is: if this stuff is only for people who have skills
and/or plenty of spare time to help in other ways, then state that up
front and scare all the other folks away immediately and don't waste
their time.

I think a lot of frustration comes from the whole experience rather
than a particular software application.

By that I mean, learning to use the functionality of, say, Ardour,
is different from needing to learn how to build the kernel in order
to get to point where one can begin to learn Ardour. (Imagine if
everyone had to learn how to culture yeast before they could enjoy

In truth, free software does, indeed, have a price...you need to

I have not attempted 9.10 as yet. So I have no help to offer.

I have two AF12's running fine under 9.04 (32bit) with
2.6.29.1-rt8-custom kernel (the so called Luke kernel). I was never able
to get it to run with no xruns with UBStudio with the 32 or 64 bit
UBStudio 9.04 "out of the box".

In fact, if I remember correctly, I installed 9.04 from Conanical, and
added the UBStudio package, and added the rt custom kernel.

I thought UBStudio install handled the "re-config" to the old firewire
stack, but you might verify that that indeed has been done. Others here
probably know the commands to do that off the top of their heads.

Re: Re: recording vocals

2009-10-08 Thread Mac McIlvaine
I absolutely agree with recent comments about 64bit.

While Hardy 8.04 was a good release, I have installed or upgraded
several machines running to 9.04 32bit with excellent results.

My current recording machine has 9.04, rt kernel and I use both Firepods
and Audiofire12's.

At Thursday, 08 October 2009, beej...@gmail.com wrote:

need that level of precision, and also for gigantic databases.  Selling
64 bit processors to consumers was a scam to trick people into upgrading
their computers... again.  I repeat, 64 bit has practically no use
for consumer use or audio recording.  Does anyone here disagree?>
> Andrew> Austin, TX> I'm not too familiar with some of the technical
details, but I believe you are correct in saying that, at this point,
64-bit seems largely useless to the average user, particularly as
far as audio goes. When it comes to versions of Ubuntu, I have personally
found that Hardy is far and away the most stable and efficient OS
of the current Ubuntu releases. This applies to my computer, though,
and your mileage may vary. I am looking forward to Karmic, and
hope that it solves some of the many problems I've been having with
the Jaunty RT kernel (and, no, I do not know how to compile my own
kernels. Maybe one day).Jason, as for a good set-up that gives
you no noise, if you're going to need to buy some kind of pre-amp/DI
or audio-interface as well as a mic, you will have a hard time keeping
it under $200.. But it is possible. When I first started recording,
I used a very cheap $60 Behringer mixer (which came with two channels
that could be used as pre-amps, and phantom power which I did not
need at the time.) and a used $50 EV dynamic mic. I ran the mic
into the mixer, and then ran the mixer's RCA tape-out direclty into
my computer's on-board soundcard, using an RCA to 1/8" cable. Whenever
I listen back to those recordings, I am actually surprised that they
sound fairly decent. I guess the moral of this story is that $200
won't get you anything 'nice', but it should get you something that
will work, and probably fairly well.By the way, what equipment do
you have right now? That will help in coming up with recommendations
for what to get.

I'd post these questions on the Ardour forum or on the Ardour IRC.
The Ardour dev is usually around there.

The doc at the site you mention is under construction, so it is indeed
incomplete, the site mentioned in another reply is pretty cursory
as well. I don't think either is meant to be a user manual or tutorial,
but are meant to be reference docs. I have found a few tutorial
videos over at Vimeo to be helpful. But, I've found hanging out on
the Ardour IRC chan. listening and askiong question to be very useful.

It very simple to avoid this, at least on FB, just click the "no don't
look at my mail box" button.

Re: Soundcard.

2009-08-09 Thread mac
I have the same chipset in my dell xps...never could get it to work.

Put a TI chipset card in my desk top, no problem.

I have had similar experiences.

Just for another view on firewire:

I have just recorded 6 performances with 22 channels input on firewire.
Worked fine.

That said, firewire with anything but the TI chipset seems hopeless.

Re: 9.04 ??

2009-04-26 Thread mac
Obviously, I've hit a nerve.

For that I apologize. As noted elsewhere, I never meant to denegrate the
work the Ubuntu Studio team has accomplished.

In fact, the blame for my frustration is clearly on me for, as the
crusaider said to Indiana Jones, choosing un-wisely.

While I agree Ardour is not broken, something is.

I just installed UB Studio Jaunty. Adjusted things so I could actually
run Jack & ffado.

Then started Ardour and began recording. Jack crashed after about 19
minutes.

Ok, so why bother to add frebob and ffado to the distro and NOT have
raw1394 loaded by default?

Daily ISO test

2009-04-14 Thread Mac
Hi,

Just wanted to report on my install of the daily i386 iso from
yesterday.

I installed on a Dell desktop, single processor.

I can confirm the access and group setting changes don't remain after
reboot.

Also, Ubuntu Studio Tool didn't address getting jackd to run.

After setting the access and group of raw1394 jackctl would attempt to
run, but jackd would zombie every time.

I was using the firewire(ffado) driver.

This may have been due to having a memory starved machine...

Regards,
Mac
