2013-12-05 Thread Pete Wright
Okay, Alex, best I can do is the Ubuntu philosophy, but the "what we are"
part is not in the official Ubuntu stuff, at least not where I can find it.
And my second guess would be Pogo. (I have met the enemy and it is us)
How lucky to have so many LUGs close by. (none around here, here being the
far Thulies of the Olympic Peninsula)

Re: [ubuntu-studio-users] Is Libre an acceptable substitute for MS office for college student? (long; sorry.)

2013-11-07 Thread Pete Wright
Thanks, Hazan, Laurent, Rob, Mike, Jimmy, and Craig,
You have been tremendously helpful.
Knowing that we should be able to make things work is important,
immediately and longer-range.
The insights into the thinking of educators are also helpful.
Moreover, I am now re-energized in the quest to get more educational tools
into the hands of those who need it most, including kids who don't get
encouraged at home and who may not even know they have potential.
So thank you for the specific assistance and for the example of people
taking the time to be helpful.
Warmest regards to all,
Pete
PS -- Imagine what might happen if people start thinking about what they
would do if they had a supercomputer of their very own that fit in a
pocket. Then compare the specs on modern smartphones -- the ones that will
sell for fifty bucks or less a couple of years from now -- with the specs
of the CRAY-1 ca2000. Hope I can stick around for a few more years to see
what happens.

[ubuntu-studio-users] Is Libre an acceptable substitute for MS office for college student? (long; sorry.)

2013-11-06 Thread Pete Wright
I know what the answer to that question should be, but I am old enough to
know how ignorant I am (plenty), so this is a legitimate serious question,
not troll-bait.

My 16-year-old high school junior is in a State of Washington program
(Running Start) that lets students start college early, which she is doing,
carrying a full load of college courses plus a couple of high school
classes.

She is bright and reasonably computer literate, but she has been writing
for years and when the rest of the computer environment doesn't let her
work as fast as a word processor does, she gets frustrated. She also has
some health issues, so just letting her sink or swim on her own is not the
best option; hence my effort to help her.

The most recent bump she has hit is a biology assignment to make graphs out
of data; the examples (samples) are provided as txt files and the
instructions are to use Excel. Our first attempts to do the job with Libre
calc and/or base failed. Her instructor, via email, just says "use the
computers at school if you don't have Excel."

We don't own MS Office and because of her health and living more than am
hour away from campus, using the school's computers are not often a good
option.

So, should she be able to do in LIbre what she would be able to do in MS
Office? (I am assuming the college does not make much use of the fanciest
bells and whistles that probably differentiate the two suites.)

I can and do teach kids and adults how to use Gimp and Libre Writer instead
of their high-priced counterparts, but when it comes to spreadsheets and
such I barely know a range from an operator, so your responses can be basic
to the point of primitive without danger of insulting me.

I am interested in broad general answers to the broad question in the
subject line, but would like to hear finer-grained answers about the
graph-generation issue, as well.

I tried a few years back to organize a local organization to persuade our
schools to use Open Source software instead of proprietary stuff, but the
teachers were all either Apple-only or totally computer illiterate. When
the others gave up, I did too, and the effort fizzled. But I remain
dedicated to using and proselytizing Open Source; just not very good at it.

Helplessly yours, Pete

I used the update in the ordinary way and everything works just fine, which

Re: [ubuntu-studio-users] ubuntu-studio-users Digest, Vol 78, Issue 11

2013-10-13 Thread Pete Wright
Yes, Gord, you and I are in agreement on most of this.
I would, however, remind you that for some of us the "studio" is a "bigger
room" than the sound-only places where I was a client in the days when I
ate my lunch at the South Street "dive" in Nashville (is it still there?)
30 years ago. I was then a film maker doing interactive video for science
museums among other things. Today I write and do art photography, mostly
for recreation.
So you see that this puts us very much in the same place.
For all of us, I think what is needed is a way to call up the tools we want
and know that, unlike the games and the word processors of yore, they will
work together in the space were we are trying to use them.
It is in the application layer that users have to understand that ease of
learning is mostly a delusion and often a barrier to ease of use.
At some point the training wheels have to come off, and at that point, as
with bicycles, the user finds they haven't "trained" at all; often exactly
the opposite. Maybe menus that also show keyboard shortcuts are as close to
Nirvana as it gets.
Cheers
Pete

[ubuntu-studio-users] Question about 13.10

2013-10-12 Thread Pete Wright
I am currently running Ubuntu 13.04 on a hand-me-down machine (my old one
on which I was running ubuntu Studio has quit, perhaps forever).
This hand-me-down has my artist wife's Windows on one partition, and she is
not yet certain she has everything going right on her replacement, so until
she signs off and I am sure this won't turn into a hand-me-back situation,
I prefer to avoid a new install in a new partition. (She already had Ubuntu
12-something on the machine, so I just updated it and loaded my files from
my external HD.

However I see in the 13.10 release notes this statement:
* A new package named ubuntustudio-installer, which allows any person to
install our metapackages and can fit into any desktop environment.

Does this mean I can turn my current Ubuntu 13.04 into Ubuntu Studio in the
same partition in which it now resides?
Or should I just blunder along in plain old Ubuntu for a while longer?
Thanks.

2013-10-12 Thread Pete Wright
I haven't seen the "user friendliness" discussion on Blender, but one
senses similar feelings on Gimp discussions and elsewhere.

The thing is that "ease of use" and "ease of learning" are not only not the
same thing, but they tend to be mutually exclusive.

Personally what I like best about Ubuntustudio is the obvious dedication of
the team to making a great collection of tools "for creative humans" of all
types. Visual artists ought to feel at home here; certainly I do
(writer,film-maker, and photographer).

Tied for first place is the group of users I get a glimpse of on this and
other lists such as LAU and GIMP.

Heartfelt regards to all.

Re: [ubuntu-studio-users] Supercollider a fork?

2013-10-06 Thread Pete Wright
Hi, Gord and Howard,
I think the fact that all sorts of creative folks can use Ubuntu Studio
"out of the box" is a great thing.
Special tools and emphases can be added by the user.
Unless one is running really ancient hardware, there should be no need to
subtract anything; Howard, et al, do a great job of making sure everything
works with everything else. That is a terrific boon to us mere mortal users.
So rather than fork, let us continue to have a tool with many tines.
And thanks again to Howard and his team.
Onward and upward!
Pete

Re: [ubuntu-studio-users] Sock drawer

2013-09-23 Thread Pete Wright
OK, Ralf.
Kidding aside, I actually found that link to be usefully illuminating.
Especially in light of this one:

http://www.infoworld.com/d/data-center/what-if-verizon-succeeds-in-killing-the-internet-227175?source=IFWNLE_nlt_blogs_2013-09-23

Now back to the socks: Beavers seem like clean animals to me, living in the
water and all. But elderly readers (are there any besides me on this list?)
may find that reference objectionable as well.

I think I will stop now, no matter how clever your next response is. But
maybe we should make the serious matter of the threats to the open Internet
a new thread of its own. Not really off-topic on a list by and for creative
types.

Monster crawler: http://monstercrawler.com/ gives spartan but useful
results "distilled" from main engines.
Duckduckgo: https://duckduckgo.com/ also claims privacy, gives decent
results

But (dare I say it?) richest result seemed to be from Bing (and this
morning it also gave me a wonderful picture of an Australian frog, free
with my order, no extra charge. Privacy? Not so much; like Google, it even
returns results from my Evernote account and probably my sock drawer. Life
is full of trade-offs.

Thanks, all.
Good to hear that things are as "automatic" as I had come to believe.
I generally ignore everything Adobe, and would have this time, but the nag
came from the Mozilla folks, and I tend to trust them.
Again, thanks to all for the guidance.
This is a great group.

thanks, Mike
Problem is Mozilla says it is "vulnerable" whatever that means.
Might this just be a MS Windows issue I can safely ignore?

[ubuntu-studio-users] not smart enough to update adobe

2013-09-19 Thread Pete Wright
Mozilla newsletter today said "check plugins" so I did.
It said adobe shockwave plugin was out of date.
I downloaded the tar.gz file, but now I don't know what to do with it.
(couldn't make head nor sense of the instructions on Mozilla support.)
I thought Linux was going to become easier than windows, and it mostly has.
But every now and then it acts like Linux of yore, and I am not
bright/nerdy/patient enough to muddle through.
Suggestions?

Thanks, all.
I am now pretty clear on what to worry about or not.
I am now in full Alfred E. Neuman mode ("What, me worry?) and proceeding

Thanks again for all the insights.

I unchecked Chromium and tried again and got the same message.
Do I have to do the whole list the same way, one at a time, to find out?

Today's update is telling me that to update it will have to install
"untrusted packages" and download from "unauthenticated" sources.
The list looks like the usual suspects.
On a scale of 1 to 5 how worried should I be (where 1 is flat-out paranoia

Re: [ubuntu-studio-users] Libre Office for Ubuntu Studio

2013-08-02 Thread Pete Wright
I think I agree with Ralf -- not a rare thing.
When I first learned about Ubuntu Studio I took the "for creative humans"
line seriously and I guess literally.
I am a film-maker and writer (sort of not-very-retired) and a serious
amateur fine-art photographer. Oddly, I never thought of Studio as solely
for sound folks, even though I subscribe to and read LAU because silent
films have become oddly unpopular over the years..
I use Libre, but I also like and use Abi on my laptops.
I guess my vote would be to use the smaller one on the initial download,
but make sure there is nothing in the distro that would prevent using
Libre, Abi, or OpenOffice or post a clear warning about any conflicts if
there are any.
Also, having the suggested (and presumably tested with the distro)
additional tools obviates a lot of this discussion, doesn't it?
Pete

Hi Ralph
This paragraph of yours (pasted below) really resonates with me, and I
suggest you post it as a standalone to the whole Ubuntu community; the
whole Linux community, for that matter.
I actually treat myself as a noobie, because stuff keeps changing all the
time.
Everybody should remember they are all noobies at something unless they
have given up on curiosity and growth, and try to treat everybody like they
hope to be treated in those situations.
BTW -- always nice to have somebody who helped create something important
out themselves in a modest way so I can thank them. Accordingly, thank you
Ralph, thank you a lot!

"If you want to attract noobies to a system this is
not the right way to go about it. It is very difficult indeed for one
who is focussing on learning a new OS to have to wade through off-topic
messages and comments about their posting skills or the suitability of
the OS for them, especially if they are self-conscious. Please try to
put yourself in the OP's shoes before responding to a query from a
self-professed newcomer to Linux. I think it also helps to assume any
new poster is a noobie unless you know for sure they are not, and treat
them accordingly."

Re: Help with WIFI on HP Mini 110-1030CA

2013-07-23 Thread Pete Wright
Don't know if this may make you feel better or just muddy the water
further, but I have had similar problems with more than one HP laptop
(including one mini) with only Windows installed. In fact the first time I
used Linux for work was during a desperate effort to revive the WiFi on an
HP lap. (Linux didn't help with that, but I soon realized I needed to use
Linux more and Windows less, so the effort was not wasted.)
In all cases my final solution was to get a little USB WiFi stick and use
that with the HPs.

Yes, George, I agree and hope I am working my way up to being able to do
some of that soon. On interesting ways to use one's own brushes, too.

Re: brushes for Gimp

2013-05-26 Thread Pete Wright
Thanks, Hartmut.
I had been clicking the wrong links.
There were other "download" buttons along the side, some of them for other
programs, like commercial pdf readers.
The correct button was "hidden" among those.
Cheers

Re: brushes for Gimp

2013-05-25 Thread Pete Wright
Thanks, Mike
All good suggestions, and I was actually already following some of them,
sort of. Been using Gimp for several months now, compared to about 20 years
with PSP, and am already convinced there isn't anything I did with PSP I
can't do with Gimp.
Actually the things you say would probably apply to any application, Open
Source or commercial.
I didn't start doing the brush stuff until I was satisfied that I could do
pretty much everything else I was used to doing with PSP, and I got there a
lot sooner than expected.
Part of that success was the result of people like you being willing to
answer the questions that arose along the way.
I am a firm believer in RTFM and the Linux world has improved greatly in
that regard in recent years.
I also believe that Open Source is now past a major "tipping point," and
development will now outpace most of the commercial closed source world.
We are already way past Open Source just mimicking functionality; Open
Source is now leading the way in many critical areas.
Giving back is harder for those of us who are not coders, but I have been
doing what I could for several years; urging schools to move to Open
Source; urging students to learn and use Open Source; etc.
My Saturday afternoon pursuing the elusive "free and wonderful" brushes was
not a waste of time for me; gave me a greater appreciation of my own stupid
brushes, for one thing, and an even greater appreciation of the value of
this group.
I hope it was not a waste of time for you, either.
Cheers
Pete

Re: brushes for Gimp

2013-05-25 Thread Pete Wright
Yes, Matt, thanks.
I had used that link earlier in learning where to put the brushes I made
myself.
Apparently the one gbr file I managed to download made brushes too similar
to ones already in Gimp as installed, so I ddin't realize I had actually
succeeded.
Now the only remaining mystery is why I can't seem to get any of the others.
Onward and upward

Re: brushes for Gimp

2013-05-25 Thread Pete Wright
Please note that in all the previous mewling and whining I have confused
using torrent and just clicking download links.
Neither is working for me.
I keep hearing about all this great stuff that is available for Gimp, but I

Good thing I know how to make my own brushes -- I can just sit cross-legged

Re: brushes for Gimp

2013-05-25 Thread Pete Wright
Nothing seems to actually be downloading.
Well, one of my attempts got me something with a .gbr extension, but
putting it in my gimp2.8 brush folder doesn't seem to have made any
difference.
I click on the links at deviantart and nothing seems to happen.
I suppose there is some way to search for brushes on torrents so I can use
transmission, but I don't know how to do that, either.
The instructions at Lifehacker say "just search."
How do you search in transmission? I just know how to start it from a seed;
a seed I download in the usual manner.
I disabled noscript in Firefox and when that didn't help I installed and
tried Chromium. No Joy.
Am I cursed?

brushes for Gimp

2013-05-25 Thread Pete Wright
Almost through the process of getting weaned from PaintShopPro after many
happy years with it.
Now I can do pretty much everything in Gimp I could do with PSP.
I can make my own brushes and use them.
But so far I can't get any of the zillions of free brushes from sites like
Noupe.
How do I get a set of brushes using Transmission?
Madly right and left clicking the various links (my usual last resort when
I don't know what I am doing) yields no joy.
I use Transmission for getting iso files, etc. so I know it works.
NoScript is often the fly in the ointment, but even with "temporarily all
this page" I am getting nothing.
What obvious thing that everybody else knows by osmosis or instinct (yes, I
am feeling sorry for myself!) am I missing?
Thanks

Error I don't understand

2013-05-24 Thread Pete Wright
The error says "Check Internet Connection." Clicking details give the
results pasted below.
All my applications that use the internet are working just fine, including
Firefox.
I am running 13.04.
Why should my system be looking for 12.10 CD-ROMs?
Running Synaptic comes up with nothing needing update.
Is the system trying to look at something it thinks is installed locally?
I have been ignoring this for some time.
Any enlightenment available?
Thanks
Pete

Re: Running big Open Source applications in the cloud?

2013-05-20 Thread Pete Wright
Thanks, Hazan, for the good link.
But all this discussion is still about various pieces of client software
you run on a local machine no matter where you get it or how you pay for it.
I am talking about running the software remotely (in the cloud), not on
local machines, with only data (and commands) passed back and forth.
>From what I have read so far, Adobe is not talking about that, despite the
"cloud" in their name for the new iteration of their suite.
Autodesk has been playing with this concept with very interesting results.
Their 123D Catch is amazing.
 http://www.123dapp.com/catch
And here is the "octocopter" capturing the images to make a 3D 123D catch
of their HQ.
 http://www.gizmag.com/autodesk-octocopter-3d-images/22083/
You can do this with your cell phone, uploading the pix to 123D catch where
all the computational heavy lifting is done in the cloud.
I am looking forward to the day when we can do this all complex tasks, and
Open Source seems like the best way to go forward.
Cheers

Re: Distros and Desktops, almost OT

2013-05-20 Thread Pete Wright
Thanks, Alf, Harry, and Ralf, all this is very helpful to me.
The only Windows program I might still use if my Windows was working is
PaintShopPro, and I am now pretty much convinced there is nothing in it
that I can't do with GIMP and other Open Source programs like Raw Therapy.
Yes, some PSP things are more automated, but then you have to pay attention
to which changes you make first and in what increments, so doing things in
a less automated way is a fair enough tradeoff, it seems to me.

I tried running an early version of PSP in Wine years ago, and haven't
tried since, because it is still reported as a no-go in Wine.

The reason my windows failed, I believe, is because my hardware is failing.
Linux is less demanding, I guess. Until I can afford to do something about
it, I try not to think about it. I think I have chunk of bad memory, and
Linux seems to know it and avoid it.

My wife and daughter both have Windows machines I can run the Corel stuff
on, if I am willing put up with the inconvenience.

More and more, however, I think when I am willing to leave PSP behind
entirely I am also willing to leave Windows behind.

Which brings me to a new topic I will introduce later, which I don't think
is so dumb: What, if any, progress is being made to running GIMP, Blender,
et all, in the Cloud? Anybody doing this? If so, how can we help? If not,
why not? (Don't answer this here; please answer in the new thread I will
start in the next few minutes.

Again, thanks all!

Distros and Desktops, almost OT

2013-05-18 Thread Pete Wright
Nobody has asked a dumb/weird question in quite a while, so I guess it is
up to me again.

As part of some research I am doing (either for the TED talk I will never
give or the book I will never publish, haven't decided which yet) I want to
play around with some different distros, particularly desktops.

How much are Linux desktops integrated with their distros? Will I get the
full flavor of each desktop if I just install in whatever Linux I am
running (currently Ubuntu Studio 13.04 on this machine) or should I put in
the whole distro for each?

I have a largish (389 gig) windows partition on this machine that has
become essentially useless (all my data backed up elsewhere, I think,
please Goddess) so should I just go ahead and try various distros on this
machine and boot into whichever one I want to use/try at any given time?

I don't even know, for example, what my experience would be like if I put
Unity, for example, on this distro. What I do know is that everything
chosen for it seems to work well with it, and I have been reluctant to mess
with it much.

Please don't panic – the book isn't about software; I am not that into
quicksand stomping! It is about education and various monetization methods
that might work for education building on an Open Source foundation. But I
want to encourage newbies and even Luddites to come and play in Linux, so I
need to know what to suggest that won't leave them hating Linux and me both.

Onward and Upward!

Failing Repositories? What is that all about?

2013-05-11 Thread Pete Wright
I keep getting a message to "manually update."
When I do it shows "software up to date."
But it keeps saying "information out of date" and when I try to fix it says
"check internet connection."
All my other software is connecting okay; Firefox, Software Center, etc.,
so obviously my connection is working as well as it ever does (I live in
the Far Thulies and suffer abuse at the hands of CenturyLink who put all
their effort into making sure my connection never EXCEEDS the speed I pay
for, never mind it never reaches it).
Hope the rest of you are having a better weekend.
In fact, instead of reading and answering this, go outdoors.

Thanks, Set
Now I can do all with Thunar I did with Nautilus, maybe easier. (My world
is now a happier place.)
And no, Nautilus did not actually lose data. It would just break in the
middle of a long task, and then I would have to pay attention to which
files it failed to copy. There would usually be one where the name showed,
but no content. No corrupted files, as far as I can tell.
I haven't yet tried Thunar on a similar large task (like copying a 30 gig
folder of my manipulated photographs). It may still prove to be my wheezy
hardware and not Nautilus that caused the trouble.
But now that you have shown me where the controls are, Thunar works just
fine for me.

Hi, Set and Eduardo
I find I miss being able to set bookmarks in Thunar the way I did in
Nautilus.
Is there a way?
Set says he finds Thunar has "become deliciously good."
I haven't pushed Thunar very hard yet (no huge directories moved between
machines or onto external drives) but I assume from comments like Set's
that Thunar will not break like Nautilus. Nautilus never lost any data, but
only because I paid attention to pick up all the pieces when it broke,
which it did plenty often. I thought it was my hardware until I saw that
Nautilus got "fired."
So is that why Thunar now? Fewer pretties like dual or multiple panel and
bookmarks, but it actually does what it is supposed to?
Just curious. Good thing I am not a cat.

Re: Party like it's 13.04

2013-04-30 Thread Pete Wright
Thanks, Set, didn't know about that.
Now, is there some way to see what's in the tabs side by side, the way f3
in Nautilus does?
Or do I just have to have two or more Thunar windows open?

Yeah, Set, I pretty much agree.
Thunar seems pretty good, but I haven't figured out how to get multi panel
(f3 in Nautilus).
I know, RTFM, but oops, I have come to believe this forum IS TFM, at least
for me.
Cheers to all who bring us Linux goodies.

Re: Searching within documents

2013-04-27 Thread Pete Wright
Thanks, Fredd
I can't seem to figure out how to get it installed in Ubuntu Studio.
I have downloaded the zip file, but neither the ziip nor the extracted
files seem to be recognized by my launcher or by Gdebi.
Can you tell me what to do with the zip to get it installed?

Searching within documents

2013-04-26 Thread Pete Wright
Any suggestions about the best way to search for documents based on key
words inside them? (Back in earlier times, on Windows, I used Copernic, but
there doesn't seem to be a Linux version.)
I am happy with my ability to search filenames.
Just that sometimes I am not bright about filenames I choose or where I put
them.

My computer is, if calculated like dog-years, older than I am I think.

Upgraded to 13.04, now display can't set to 1680x1050

Everything else seems to work fine, so far.
But my eyeballs are going to go all wonky if I have to keep looking at
1280x1024 on a 1680x1050 screen.

Went to help page; it says "work in progress" and shows the dialog box with
1680x1050 on top. Very frustrating.

Should I try to fix, reinstall, or just wait for the next update?

OT (somewhat): ease of "porting" programs to Linux

2013-04-13 Thread Pete Wright
I have been told recently that it is getting easier to port programs, even
complex ones like PaintShopPro for Windows, to Linux.
Of course I understand that "easier" is merely comparative and subjective
at that.
As a minor portion of a business book I am writing I want to explore the
economics of a company like Corel making a program like PaintShopPro
available on Linux as a commercial product. If sold at exactly the same
price it should still be cheaper for the buyer because of not having to own
Windows.
But with much of the world seemingly refusing Windows 8, shouldn't the
Windows software providers who aren't Microsoft be thinking about this?
And what about porting Mac programs to Linux? That should be even easier,
shouldn't it?
And yes, I know that good alternatives to most Windows programs are already
here, and that Open Source is probably past a tipping point.
I am exploring by trying to think like a Windows software company facing
the apparent decline of Windows installations.
Not intending this as Troll bait; if I have missed something obvious,
please bring it to my attention as gently as you can.
cheers
Pete

Anybody successfully using Miro 5.04 yet?

2013-04-11 Thread Pete Wright
Software Centre still showing v4 with lots of "instability..." comments.
Miro site has 5.04 for Ubuntu avail now.
Am I just going to break something playing with this?

Re: Desktop change consequences

2013-04-10 Thread Pete Wright
Thanks, Ben
I do have 2.5 linux setups (don't have full-time access to the third, so
2.5).
The rub is they are not identical hardware and do not behave the same with
identical software, which I gave up trying to achieve.
So I am now running Ubuntu 12.10 on one, Ubuntu Studio 12.10 on my main
machine, and a hodge-podge mostly 12.04 on a mini laptop which is
ethernetted into my main one..
Am I correct that SUDO gives temporary super-user status (but not root)?
I had what had to have been one of the rare few personally-owned Unix
machines back in the early '80s, and am trying to dredge up and/or replace
the old knowledge, after being mainly in the windows world from around 1984
until late last year..
Bizarre, I admit.

So, to make sure I understand you, if I get something from the repository I
do not have to use synaptic to keep it up to date?
Is Synaptic still useful in any scenario, or is it completely

Really? Updating automatic? I knew Ubuntu updates automatically, but many
items in the Software Centre say "Updates not provided by Ubuntu...may be
provided by community" or something like that. Are these packages/programs
automagically updating themselves in the background? Even the main Ubuntu
thingy asks me before updating.

Synapse aboard and seems just the ticket.
Also, after this morning's update, I find I am now able to put my own
dubious artwork on the desktop.
I see Synapse updates are not included in Ubuntu; will Synaptic do? I run
it periodically.

Re: Desktop change consequences

2013-04-08 Thread Pete Wright
I loved our Arriflex. Couldn't afford its care and feeding today, though.
Even in 1975 it cost about $11 a minute to turn it on. That was the number
that ran in my head while shooting; I think it was total cost of film,
processing, and one copy one-light work print.

On the subject of "sound on film," I was once asked to help out a public TV
station whose intern shot some critical footage with an Auricon. Kind of a
cubical camera that recorded sound directly on the optical sound track.

Problem was, the kid held the camera upside down. How to fix it without
going shipping the film 120 miles to nearest available (prohibitively
expensive) optical printer? Oh, and there was a "film at eleven" kind of
time crunch, too.

Got a couple of friends in and we dismantled the stations film chain (which
was basically a projector/camera combination) and temporarily inverted the
camera -- the projector wouldn't run upside down; couldn't be cooled in
that position.

If you are of recent vintage and want to imagine the analog world we all
lived in, just think slow, cranky, and everything you do cast in bronze.

I am out of here now, before I get the OT boot!

Re: Desktop change consequences

2013-04-08 Thread Pete Wright
I guess I would say the functions that play to my inherent laziness.
Love the "heads up" search, especially. Nothing one can't do in Studio with
a few more clicks, though.
And I can't change the desktop picture to one of my own in Studio -- and
no, I won't be surprised to learn that is a bug or glitch specific to my
wheezy old computer, not the OS.

Re: Desktop change consequences

2013-04-08 Thread Pete Wright
Thanks to all for all the helpful feedback.
The reference to "GIMP while we're at school..." made me smile.
I am a newbie to Ubuntu and Linux. But not to messing with new things in a
world not quite ready.
I was laughed out of a technical meeting of movie equipment pros one time
when I told them that one day soon the 35mm and 16mm cameras we were using
would be the exception and video cameras would be used for just about
everything, especially since nearly everything would be on small screens.
That was about 1973, I think.
I made the first film that used post-produced synthesized music. About
1975, I think. Won some significant awards.
Got some smart buddies in Nashville to help make post-produced music work
in a user controlled interactive video exhibit for a science museum. 1986
maybe? Probably never been done again (it was a pretty crazy thing to do,
after all), and I was told as recently as last month that it was
"impossible."
So in return for all the kind advice, I will give you all some:
Never stop being a newbie. I have been at it 75 years now.
Works for me.

Desktop change consequences

2013-04-08 Thread Pete Wright
If this question is too “newbie” or worse, heretical, please forgive and
then ignore me.

I changed from Ubuntu 12.10 to Ubuntu Studio 12.10 primarily because GIMP
was slightly flakey (main problem was it wouldn't accept ctr key
combination like ctr+ left click to select area for clone brush) and I
hoped Studio would not have something hijacking the ctrl function. I also
do lots of content creation (primarily writing and art photography) so
Studio seemed a good choice.

Now I find myself missing the much-maligned Unity desktop. So, can I change
to Unity desktop in Studio without horrible consequences? (And if so, how
do I do it?)

Or is nobody checking to see if Unity works with all the rest of Studio,
and so I should just shut up and sit down?

Thanks.

Re: Western Digital external drives

2013-03-15 Thread Pete Wright
There are some viruses/trojans out there that make it seem that your
HARDWARE is progressively failing: notifcation that drive is failing, etc.
Even the DVD drive doors may refuse to function from time to time, but not
all the time. On Win machines, don't know about other OS.
This gets worse with each reboot.
I was unable to get rid of this on one Windows machine, which became
unusable, seemingly worn out.
I "repaired" it by wiping the drive and installing Ubuntu.
BTW I use four old WD Mybooks, 500 gig each. Only one has failed (so far,
knock wood).
