Re: [ubuntu-studio-users] Updated to 22.10 and greeted with a Grub screen: what to do now?

2023-02-17 Thread Ross Gammon

Hi Viktor,

Very strange indeed. I did the the exact same upgrade yesterday, but I
used the do-release-upgrade command in the Konsole as recommended in the
Release Notes.

As the upgrade should only be operating on files using the package
manager and its configuration (changing the active release and upgrading
packages), I can only think that a new version of Grub could behave
differently somehow, or you had a hardware failure.

Do you have a backup? If so, you could restore and try again.

Otherwise, I would recommend asking again on a wider Ubuntu
Forum/Mailing list as you are more likely to find someone experienced in
trouble-shooting this type of thing. We are more focused on Video and
Pro-Audio stuff here.

It did happen to me once before (getting a grub prompt) - I can't
remember why. And there is plenty of advice online on how to diagnose
the issue from the grub prompt.

Good luck - fingers crossed!

Re: [ubuntu-studio-users] DNS restoration

2023-02-17 Thread Ross Gammon

Hi Brian,

That doesn't sound like something specific to Ubuntu Studio. You may
have more success asking this on a wider Ubuntu forum/mailing list where
there are likely to be a few networking gurus lurking.

Regards,

Ross

PS: I remember there was an issue with a version of the low-latency
kernel (that comes with Ubuntu Studio) in the past, but this caused a
hard and fast broken networking situation, and I think it was in US >
20.x (and fixed).

[ubuntu-studio-users] Desktops [Was: Re: Subscribe]

2022-10-04 Thread Ross Gammon
You can always install multiple desktops, and choose the one you want to
use at the Display Manager after the machine boots. But I have never
tried this with SDDM.

But I have had problems doing this in the past with strange things

I am curious. What is so important about using XFCE?

If you updated Ubuntu a while back and haven't used it for a while, you
may have been hit by a bug caused by some of the kernel security
releases causing network connectivity to fail if you have a USB audio
device.

This happened to me a couple of times after an update.

The solution was to reboot and select an old version of the kernel in
the GRUB menu. If you are lucky, that version of the kernel will have a
working network and you can do an update of the system. The latest
kernels do not have the problem.

This is a bit of a guess, because you gave more information about your
Windows version than your Ubuntu Studio version. :-)

Re: [ubuntu-studio-users] MIDI-Keyboard

2021-03-04 Thread Ross Gammon
Hi Hans,

I don't have a Steinberg UR22, but these days USB audio devices are less
troublesome to set up.

I would use studio-controls to set up the USB audio device with Jack.
There is advice on doing this on our wiki:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuStudio/UbuntuStudioControls

Then I would use Carla (the patchbay) to connect everything up. Just
connect the midi in port (probably shown as a2j) to qsynth "midi in" (or
whatever soft synth you want to use) and connect the qsynth audio out to
"system playback" which will be the Steinberg if everyting is ste up
correctly in studio-controls.

The Ubuntu Studio Audio Handbook is a good reference:
https://ubuntustudio.org/audio-handbook/

Good luck!

Re: [ubuntu-studio-users] Support for Digigram PCX822np on Ubuntu Studio 20.04 LTS

Hi Andrew,

Mucking about with kernel modules is not something I know much about,
and you could be right. I do see some activity on the web delving in to
this area, but it is difficult to know what OS, kernel & and version of
the card they are talking about. It does not look good that it does not
show up in /proc.

Can you run $ aplay -l and $ arecord -l to see what ALSA reports, just
in case.

You might need to get advice from forums wider than Ubuntu Studio e.g.
Linux Audio & ALSA projects, unless someone else reads this and is able
to give further advice.

Re: [ubuntu-studio-users] Steinberg UR22mkII

2020-11-12 Thread Ross Gammon
Hi Hans,

I am not sure why you say no input is available. I believe the
sub-devices are referring to the number of streams/channels (which could
be internal sources like a software instrument) that can be sent to that
output.

To see what input devices you have, run $ arecord -l

The first error seems to say that ALSA is not happy about a period size
of 16 frames.

Maybe you could use Studio-Controls to change that setting to something
else? Studio-Controls is great for trying different settings until it works.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuStudio/UbuntuStudioControls

There is some advice on the settings to use for USB devices there, and
on the previous Pro-Audio link I sent in a previous thread.

I did an internet search and saw some posts saying that it works fine
with Linux. Most USB devices just work in Linux these days if they are
compliant with the spec. It is normally access to internal mixing paths
that might not be available. But this should not be a problem with 2 inputs.

Have you tried setting it up in studio-controls as the USB device, and
clicked to start Jack? What do you see when you do that?

Re: [ubuntu-studio-users] ubuntu-studio-users Digest, Vol 163, Issue 4

2020-11-07 Thread Ross Gammon
Hi Hans,

It is unusual to need to dig into config files these days unless you
have some unusual hardware/software configuration, or to diagnose a
hardware problem. Most times you are up and running with the default
settings in Ubuntu Studio. And Studio Controls has been designed for you
to be able to set up audio in a multiple card setup with multiple
bridges between pulse and jack, and is continuously being improved.

OK, I think from your mail that you have a Steinberg UR22 MK2 audio
device. Could you run the following command to confirm this, and so we
can see what other ALSA devices you have?
$ aplay -l

So if you go into Studio Controls and set the "USB device that should be
master" to the UR22, then click "Apply Audio Settings" to save the
configuration, and then click "Start or Restart Jack", do you get the
"green tick" and the message "Jack status: Running DSP: 0.nn%"?

If you do, then do you see the device (and the bridges to pulseaudio) if
you click on the Carla button to start Carla, and open the patchbay window?

Regards,

Ross

Re: [ubuntu-studio-users] pulseaudio

2020-11-05 Thread Ross Gammon
Hi there Hans,

It should be possible to get your machine working with both Jack and
Pulseaudio installed using the pulse to jack bridge.

Some of the advice on the internet can be a bit old. These days we use
the Studio Controls application to set everything up.

There is some basic help here for setting things up:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuStudio/ProAudioIntro

So why won't Jack run (what error messages do you see)? What audio
devices do you have plugged in?

Cheers,

Ross

2020-11-02 Thread Ross Gammon
Hi,

This is a bit off topic as these are not applications related to Ubuntu
Studio.

Radiotray was removed from Debian. You can see the reasons here:
https://tracker.debian.org/news/1107197/removed-073-6-from-unstable/

Gluqlo has never been packaged for Debian or Ubuntu as far as I can tell.

You could try building them from source, or from unoffical ppa's, but
you will be pretty much on your own here as Ubuntu Studio cannot support
you. You could try following the Debian process to (re)introduce a package:
https://www.debian.org/devel/wnpp/
But I doubt you will get very far unless there are many others
(including the upstream project) that are willing to help.

Are there other packages that will do the same or similar?

Re: [ubuntu-studio-users] weird ssh issue

2020-11-02 Thread Ross Gammon
Hi Bart,

This is a bit off-topic for Ubuntu Studio, and you might have more
success asking in a forum more used to dealing with networking issues.

If you can connect to a different Raspberry pi from the same computer
plugged into the same network location, and if you can connect to this
Pi from a mobile phone, are you sure you are using the right IP address
in the ssh command? I assume the mobile phone is using a public IP
address and the router is set up to divert Port 22 connections to the
right internal IP address.

Can you connect to this pi from the other pi? Assuming they are on the
same subnet then this would confirm that the problem is on your Ubuntu
Studio computer setup.

Ross

I also have a Focusrite Scarlett (2nd Gen) with a similar set up, except
it is standard Ubuntu (Gnome) 20.04. I have not had problems until
recently when sometimes the device is not available and I have to turn
it off and on again. It has only happened twice and I have not tracked
the problem down.

What are your settings in Studio Controls (Audio Setup)? Do you have the
Ubuntu Studio ppa set up to get the latest versions of the US packages?

Re: [ubuntu-studio-users] ubuntustudio and KDE

2020-06-26 Thread Ross Gammon
Hi Erich,

I apologise for top posting, but I wanted to ask a quick related
question. Maybe I missed it, but one thing I haven't seen mentioned is
the upgrade path.

It is clear to me that if you stay with 20.04 for the supported 3 years,
you will keep whatever desktop you have (e.g. XFCE which is default for
Ubuntu Studio).

It is also clear that if you do a fresh install of Ubuntu Studio 20.10
you will get Plasma.

But what happens if you upgrade Ubuntu Studio from 20.04 to 20.10 (or
from 20.04 to the next LTS release 22.04)? The announcement mentioned
likely breakage? Personally, I would prefer that either I kept the same
desktop, or I was smoothly migrated over to Plasma.

I have always wondered what all the fuss is about with the "desktop
debate". I use Ubuntu Studio on two machines. One is standard Ubuntu
Studio (XFCE), and the other is standard Ubuntu with Ubuntu Studio
installed on top with the installer (Gnome).

The most important thing for me is being able to find the applications,
and then learning the tricks to arranging the open windows the way I
want them. It has never taken me long to work out a new desktop (but I
am a very basic user).

Maybe we should publish a guide to help people migrate from XFCE to
Plasma? What are the tips and tricks to carry on recording in the new
environment without embarrassing yourself in a professional scenario?

Cheers,

Ross

Re: [ubuntu-studio-users] Geonkick&EQ10Q en UBUNTU

2020-05-26 Thread Ross Gammon
Hi,

You will need to remove all traces of the old version to avoid problems.

The location of the downloaded tarball should not matter according to
the projects build instructions (see the README text at the bottom). You
can build it in your home partition with normal user permissions. The
"make install" step is where you will probably need "sudo" for
permission to install it (normally under /usr):
https://github.com/iurie-sw/geonkick
It is a pretty standard make & make install build system with cmake.
Although you need to build the Redkite GUI toolkit first.

I copy the instructions here:
On Debian, Ubuntu, Ubuntu Studio install:

build and install first Redkite, than:
apt-get install build-essential
apt-get install cmake
apt-get install qjackctl libjack-dev libsndfile-dev
apt-get install rapidjson-dev
apt-get install lv2-dev

Build & install Geonkick

Clone the Geonkick code repository, compile and install

git clone https://gitlab.com/iurie-sw/geonkick.git
mkdir geonkick/build
cd geonkick/build
cmake ../
make
make install

Have you considered requesting that it is packaged for Debian to make it
easy for everyone to install it in the future? Debian packages will
eventually migrate to Ubuntu. It looks like it is Free software - GPL-3.

In case it helps. The Focal (20.04) Release Notes have some information

whether it is a fresh install, or an upgrade.

Would it be possible to use Obs-studio? I have never used it, but a
quick search of their website showed it is possible to mixed several
video sources, and also syncronise a separate audio source using the
delay setting in the mixer.

I have been watching several TV shows with bands playing songs together,
whilst "Coronavirus isolated" in their own separate home studios. It was
good to see the pros using similar setups to mine, but with more
expensive gear! I saw lots of Macs and ProTools. I have not done it
myself, but I assume you would use Ardour to bounce the audio tracks
around the different band members/sections?

Incidentally, there have been some attempts to get cinelerra into Debian:
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=331072
If you were willing to learn Debian packaging, you could try and revive
that effort. Or you could try and convince one of the Debian Developers
that are interested to restart there efforts.

Cheers,

Ross

Re: [ubuntu-studio-users] Ubuntustudio controls and 19.10

2019-12-27 Thread Ross Gammon
Hi Mac,

If you are getting a crash, then that should probably be reported as a bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntustudio-controls/+filebug

Or type "ubuntu-bug ubuntustudio-controls" on the command line.

After that you could try using ubuntustudio-installer to add our
backports-ppa and see if the latest versions of Ubuntu Studio packages
have the problem already fixed.

[ubuntu-studio-users] Fwd: Eoan Ermine (19.10) Beta Freeze

2019-09-24 Thread Ross Gammon
There are some Beta images for Ubuntu Studio 19.10 ready for testing!

http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/406/builds

Sing out if you want to take part but need some help to get going.

 Forwarded Message
Subject:Eoan Ermine (19.10) Beta Freeze
Date: Mon, 23 Sep 2019 21:23:22 +
From: Adam Conrad
To: ubuntu-devel-annou...@lists.ubuntu.com
CC: ubuntu-rele...@lists.ubuntu.com

As of several minutes ago, eoan has entered the beta[1] freeze,
with a goal of releasing Beta[1] images sometime late Thursday.

The queue freeze will last from now until final release in October,
which means that all seeded packages will now need a spot-check and
review in the queue from a release team member before they are let
into the archive.

As with the previous releases, we have a bot in place that will accept
uploads that are unseeded and don't affect images. Don't take this as
an open invitation to break Feature Freeze on those components, this
is just to reduce the burden on the release team, so we only review the
uploads that need very serious consideration. If you find the bot is
blocking an upload that you think should have been auto-accepted, let
us know and we'll sort it out.

I will be spinning a set of beta candidates after proposed-migration
has settled this evening which I encourage people to get to testing
ASAP for their favourite flavour(s) as they come off the line.

Happy bug-hunting from now until the final release, and please do help
out and test ISOs, netboot, etc, where you can and let us know what's
broken in your environment(s).

On behalf of the Ubuntu Release Team,

Re: [ubuntu-studio-users] 18.04 backport, Ubuntustudio controls and ffado

2019-04-25 Thread Ross Gammon
Hi Mac (and others),

Yesterday, I tried this for myself and can confirm that the Alsa Jack
bridge is always enabled after a reboot even if you turn it off before
shutting down.

I had a quick look at the code to see which configuration files are
written, but ran out of time before I worked it out.

Hopefully Len who wrote the code will have the time soon to take a look
at it. In the mean time I will try and take another look and see if I
can find a workaround.

I submitted a bug to track it:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntustudio-controls/+bug/1826413

Ross

I am no expert with kernel stuff, but the first step I suppose is to try
and find any error messages.

Try following this page:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelBoot

Disconnecting hardware (e.g. graphics cards) can sometimes help to
narrow down the problem.

Re: [ubuntu-studio-users] Offer to upgrade failed

2019-01-20 Thread Ross Gammon
I think all the package configuration errors at the end are just the
result of the upgrade aborting midway. The actual problem happened
before, and may be something to do with the systemd-shim at the top of
the pastebin (or maybe something before that). But there I am at a bit
of a loss.

It looks like bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/systemd-shim/+bug/1773859

You might also want to add a comment to the bug that you have the same
problem coming from Xenial to Bionic. The same fix is probably
backportable to Xenial.

You could try one of the workarounds listed in the bug (eg. renaming the
conflicting file).

But on the other hand, a fresh install does not hurt sometimes to clean
things up. Though, even with the old "/home", it might take a while to
get everything set up again exactly how it was.

Cheers,

Ross

Re: [ubuntu-studio-users] Offer to upgrade failed

2019-01-14 Thread Ross Gammon
Hi Paul,

There are some instructions for upgrading from 16.04 & 17.10 to 18.04
here (which seems to be what you have done):

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BionicBeaver/ReleaseNotes#Upgrading_from_Ubuntu_16.04_LTS_or_17.10

As you have hit errors, it might be better to follow the Ubuntu Server
update instructions and do a "sudo do-release-upgrade" on the command
line. Then it might be easier to copy and paste any error messages on an
email to the list.

There are places you can retrieve the apt logs, but you probably won't
need to if the error is obvious to us here.

Regards,

Ross

It is an application that has been in Ubuntu Studio for a long time, but
has been completely re-written by Len recently, adding new features. It
allows you to change your audio settings.

[ubuntu-studio-users] Fwd: Non-final, but very testable (hint, hint) Cosmic RC builds

2018-10-14 Thread Ross Gammon
As you can see below, final testing has started for Ubuntu Studio 18.10
(Cosmic Cuttlefish).

http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker

I you have an interest in helping a good release, then please get
testing. Instructions are on the tracker (link above).

There will be other builds with fixes, so please plan to test several
(or all) nights this week until Thursday (18th October).

Over the next few hours, builds will start popping on the Cosmic Final
milestone page[1] on the ISO tracker. These builds are not final.
We're still waiting on a few more fixes, a few things to migrate, etc.
I've intentionally not updated base-files or the ISO labels to reflect
the release status (so please don't file bugs about those).

What there are, however, are "close enough" for people to be testing in
anger, filing bugs, fixing bugs, iterating image builds, and testing
all over again. So, please, don't wait until Wednesday night to test,
testing just before release is TOO LATE to get anything fixed. Get out
there, grab your favourite ISO, beat it up, report bugs, escalate bugs,
get things fixed, respin (if you're a flavour lead with access), and
test, test... And test. Did I mention testing? Please[2] test.

Thanks,

Hi all,

For those that would like to help out with testing Ubuntu Studio, the
latest "point" release for Ubuntu Studio 16.04.4 (Xenial) is ready for
testing.

http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/386/builds

Click on the link to the 32 or 64 bit test cases, and you will find
download instructions there. There are also links to testing instructions.

Please make sure to record your result on the tracker (good or bad) so
we can see how much testing has been done.

[ubuntu-studio-users] Introducing the potential new Ubuntu Studio Council

2018-02-23 Thread Ross Gammon
Introducing the potential new Ubuntu Studio Council
===

Back in 2016, Set Hallström was elected as the new Team Lead for
Ubuntu Studio, just in time for the 16.04 Xenial Long Term Support
(LTS) release. It was intended that Ubuntu Studio would be able to
utilise Set's leadership skills at least up until the next LTS
release in April 2018. Unfortunately, as happens occasionally in the
world of volunteer work, Set's personal circumstances changed and he is
no longer able to devote as much time to Ubuntu Studio as he would like.

Therefore, an IRC meeting was held between interested Ubuntu Studio
contributors on 21st May 2017 to agree on how to fill the void. We
decided to follow the lead of Xubuntu and create a Council to take care
of Ubuntu Studio, rather than continuing to place the burden of
leadership on the shoulder of one particular person.

Unfortunately, although the result was an agreement to form the first
Ubuntu Studio Council from the meeting participants, we all got busy and
the council was never set up.

Who was willing to be in the Ubuntu Studio Council?
---

The attendees of the IRC Meeting that were to form the Ubuntu Studio
Council are: - **Set Hallström** (sakrecoer) - **Eylul** (eylul) -
**Len Ovens** (len-ovenwerks) - **Ross Gammon** (rosco2)

Now times have changed, and Eylul and Ross have also become very busy.
We are also aware that some regular contributors to Ubuntu Studio (I can
think of Krytarik for example) were not present for the IRC meeting.

So, now we are considering expanding the size of that original proposed
Council to try and bring in some new blood to Ubuntu Studio, and keep
the project going. In particular, we really need someone to step up help
with some leadership and direction, and build up the Ubuntu Studio teams.

How would the Ubuntu Studio Council Work?

The Ubuntu Studio Council would exist to provide security and stability
for the Ubuntu Studio project, and to spread the workload of
administering the project. However, the actual work of producing
and maintaining each release of Ubuntu Studio would not done by the
Council. The actual work and decision making would be carried out,
through the various existing teams (e.g. Artwork, Development,
Testing, Website etc.). The council will of course help with
agreeing the long term direction of Ubuntu Studio and resolving
disputes as required.

The exact details of the working of the Ubuntu Studio Council need to be
documented on our wiki, but the following points were discussed and are
the likely way of working:

- A Council Chair
will be elected from within the Council with a minimum term of one
release of Ubuntu Studio.
- Elections to the Council will be carried out yearly to encourage
participation, and generate fresh ideas. Council membership terms will
be set to expire at overlapping intervals for stability, and re-election
is allowed.
- The size of the council is preferably between 3 and 5 members.

What do you think? Want to help out and keep Ubuntu Studio going?
-

If you have any questions about this, please make contact on the
#ubuntustudio-devel IRC channel on irc.freenode.net, or the
developer mailing list
https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-studio-devel.

If this has inspired you to help out, we are always after more
help. Help to write and improve documentation, add new features,
test and fix Ubuntu Studio applications, help users solve problems,
is always welcome. Get in touch!

Please state whether you would like to join one of the teams and help out.

Please state whether you would be willing to join the council and be the
chair/leader for a release cycle (or more).

Regards,

Ross Gammon

You could also try triaging a few bugs on Ubuntu Studio packages:

Just when you have a spare hour or so here and there. It all helps.

Hi Achilleas,

Yuck. If you don't stick with the LTS's, you need to keep up to date
with the latest release!

I am afraid that I am not the best person to help out here. There is
some help (although getting dated) here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuStudio

You could also try running from a Live DVD, to compare settings etc.

Ralf has also emailed some good troubleshooting commands on this list,
if you search the online archives.

Let us know how you get on.

Yes, a fresh release is always best to gather new users and fans of
Ubuntu Studio.

However, without a release it is still always possible to upgrade.
Although if nobody has tested it, there might be bugs. This is what I
always do. There are instructions in the wikis.

No problems. Any help is welcome. Take a look at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuStudio and look around for interesting
tasks and teams to join. Start slow and chip in here and there. Who
knows, in a few years you might be a Team Lead :-)

Hi Alex,

April 26th is the current release date. The first release candidate is
normally available for testing on the Monday before that.

See the other thread for Beta release dates.

what do you need in Beta Ttesters.

It is best to do beta testing on a separate machine. It is rare, but
possible, for the ISO image to contain a bug that causes difficulty
booting your machine afterwards, or erases data. It is also easy to make
a mistake and install over the top of your data.

But if you have backups, and trust yourself to repair any damage, you
could also test the install on a plug-in external disk (or a spare
internal one).

You can test inside a Virtual Machine (e.g. using Virtual Box), and
there is no danger of breaking anything this way, but if everyone does
this, then we are not testing on a wide variety of hardware.

Tests of the live image (without installing) are useful for us, and help
pickup

If want to have a practise, you could try with one of the "daily" ISO
images:
http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/

There is lots of help and instructions linked from that page. Sing out
on the -devel mailing list for help, or look for help on our IRC channel.

Please make sure you add your results on that website. Even for the
daily image. Success, or Fail, it doesn't matter.

to dual boot with windows 10 1 Tb.

There is an option in the Ubuntu Studio installer to install alongside
Windows. I do this on one PC at home. Expect Windows to occasionally
overwrite your boot settings without telling you though :-)

Ross

[ubuntu-studio-users] Coming Ubuntu Studio Releases

2018-02-22 Thread Ross Gammon
Hi All,

We have some coming release dates that require testing of the ISO images.

Ubuntu Studio 16.04.4 Xenial point release: The date has been put back
to the 1st of March. I should be around for that.

Ubuntu Studio First Beta: As far as I know, we have no new features to
test, so we should probably opt out of this release.

Ubuntu Studio 18.04 Final Beta: April 5th. I should be around for that.

Ubuntu Studio 18.04 Final Release: April 19th - 26th. I will not be
available for that (due to work).

Who is around to help testing for the first 3?

Who is around to do the Release Manager duties for the 18.04 Final
Release (testing, confirming when images are releasable, writing release
notes, helping with website/social media announcements)?

Should we release 18.04 at all?

Ross

Glad to hear you got somewhere.

I just fired up my 17.10 64 bit Ubuntu Studio VM which I used to test

fine. After an apt upgrade and reboot it is still working OK for me.

[ubuntu-studio-users] Testing Team Leader Role in Ubuntu Studio

2018-01-28 Thread Ross Gammon
Hi All,

This is a call for assistance with Testing in Ubuntu Studio.

I am currently finding it very difficult to put the time I would like
into fulfilling the role I took on some time ago, to be the Test Team
Lead for Ubuntu Studio. Therefore, I am looking for volunteers to join
the team (if not members already), and take over as Test Team Leader
after 18.04 (Bionic) LTS is released.

There is some information about the team on the wiki here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuStudio/TestingTeamPage

There is also a need to be available for release tasks during the times
we are working on the next release, or there is an update to an LTS
release. Some of the things that need to be done for a release are
listed here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuStudio/DevEvents/Release

As a summary, the role involves:
- Managing the Manual Test Cases at http://packages.qa.ubuntu.com/
- Being the Release Manager at the appropriate points in the test cycle:
http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BionicBeaver/ReleaseSchedule
- Announcing the coming tests and encouraging others to take part in the
tests.
- Triaging bugs found during the test campaigns.
- Writing the Release Notes & helping the documentation team with text
for the announcements.

I still plan to be a member of the team to help out where I can, and to
assist the new Test Lead develop into the role. But would like to spend
what spare time I have, concentrating on getting more evidence of
uploads to Ubuntu for my Developer application.

If you would like to help out, please apply to be a member of the
testing team on Launchpad (https://launchpad.net/~ubuntustudio-testing),
and let us know on the developers list that you would like to volunteer.

Lets all chip in to help make the next (and future) Ubuntu Studio
releases a success.

Regards,

Ross Gammon

Re: [ubuntu-studio-users] ubuntustudio 17.10 as virtualbox guest

2018-01-25 Thread Ross Gammon
Hi marcarth,

Which image did you use for the install into the guest? Was it the
recent 17.10.1 Test Build (2018), or the original 17.10 Release (2017)?

If it is the latest one, you might be the first person to test it.
Unfortunately, nobody from Ubuntu Studio took part in the latest
emergency release of Artful.

The original release worked for me in a Virtual Box guest on an Ubuntu
17.04 host. Are you talking about 64 bit, or 32 bit?

Ross

[ubuntu-studio-users] Fwd: Ubuntu 17.04 (Zesty Zapus) End of Life reached on January 13, 2018

2018-01-18 Thread Ross Gammon

FYI

 Forwarded Message
Subject:Ubuntu 17.04 (Zesty Zapus) End of Life reached on January 13,
2018
Date: Thu, 18 Jan 2018 00:13:36 +0200
From: Steve Langasek
To: ubuntu-annou...@lists.ubuntu.com

This is a follow-up to the End of Life warning sent earlier this month to
confirm that as of January 13, 2018, Ubuntu 17.04 is no longer supported.
No more package updates will be accepted to 17.04, and it will be archived
to old-releases.ubuntu.com in the coming weeks.

The original End of Life warning follows, with upgrade instructions:

Ubuntu announced its 17.04 (Zesty Zapus) release almost 9 months ago, on
April 13, 2017. As a non-LTS release, 17.04 has a 9-month support cycle
and, as such, will reach end of life on Saturday, January 13th.

At that time, Ubuntu Security Notices will no longer include information or
updated packages for Ubuntu 17.04.

The supported upgrade path from Ubuntu 17.04 is via Ubuntu 17.10.
Instructions and caveats for the upgrade may be found at:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Upgrades

Ubuntu 17.10 continues to be actively supported with security updates and
select high-impact bug fixes. Announcements of security updates for Ubuntu
releases are sent to the ubuntu-security-announce mailing list, information
about which may be found at:

https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-security-announce

Development of a complete response to the highly-publicized Meltdown and
Spectre vulnerabilities is ongoing, and due to the timing with respect to
this End of Life, we will not be providing updated Linux kernel packages for
Ubuntu 17.04. We advise users to upgrade to Ubuntu 17.10 and install the
updated kernel packages for that release when they become available.

For more information about Canonical’s response to the Meltdown and
Spectre vulnerabilities, see:

https://insights.ubuntu.com/2018/01/04/ubuntu-updates-for-the-meltdown-spectre-vulnerabilities/

Since its launch in October 2004 Ubuntu has become one of the most highly
regarded Linux distributions with millions of users in homes, schools,
businesses and governments around the world. Ubuntu is Open Source
software, costs nothing to download, and users are free to customise or
alter their software in order to meet their needs.

The first Release Candidate for Artful is now available:

It is not the last release candidate, but as Adam Conrad (Ubuntu

time like the present to go bug-hunting."

[ubuntu-studio-users] Testing for Ubuntu Studio 17.10 Artful Aardvark Release & Hangout

2017-10-12 Thread Ross Gammon
Hi All,

It is planned to release Ubuntu 17.10 next week on the 19th October. So
we need lots of help to test the ISO images between now and then.

Back on September 28th we released the Final Beta:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ArtfulAardvark/Beta2/UbuntuStudio

So feel free to read those release notes, grab the ISO image and give it
a test install. There are links from there about how to do the test.
Please don't do the test on a machine that to rely on, or don't have
backups for. The Beta has been tested, and should not cause too many
problems, but you never know - that is why we need to test! :-)

There is also a planned On-Air hangout on Monday 16th October, for
people to learn how to do ISO testing. There should be many experienced
people online to answer any questions. Read more here:

https://community.ubuntu.com/t/ubuntu-17-10-community-iso-testing/458

Ross

[ubuntu-studio-users] Artful 17.10 Final Beta Testing underway

2017-09-26 Thread Ross Gammon
Hi All,

Please help make sure the release of Ubuntu Studio Artful goes smoothly,
and begin testing the Final Beta with us:
http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/382/builds

We need as many different types of machine and hardware tested as
possible. Please do not use your "only" machine for this, use a spare
one, or a spare hard disk. Accidents can occasionally happen with a Beta
release.

Take a look and see what has changed since the version of Ubuntu Studio
you are using. Tell us what you think.

Instructions and download links are on that page, but if you need help
then sing out here (or on irc).

The Final Beta release is planned for Thursday 28th September.

Ross

You probably don't care now that you got it working, but unless you have
been careless with a sudo command, that file can normally only be
removed by the package that installed it.

$ apt-file search
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/gdk-pixbuf-2.0/2.10.0/loaders.cache

This would tell you which package owns the file. It was probably an
update to that package which caused it. But actually you can see it is
the gdk-pixbuf-2.0 package from the path name.

Maybe this package was updated? But then I would have to dig deeper to
see what maintainer scripts might be run to update/add/delete that cache
file when something is updated.

Anyway - you fixed it!

Ross

It can take some time to find the right triaging advice with all the
links in there, but I always turn to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BugSquad/
when I want to find some tips on bug triage.

There is a page on Bug Triage, and a Knowledge Base page. Normally for
freezes and lockups that page points you to a page on Kernel triage & X
triage.

But of course, it could also be hardware. You could try running another
distro/release on a live CD or installed to a spare hard disk to try and
eliminate a software bug.

Keep us up to date. Someone else with more experience might have time to
help out when you report back.

Hi All,

It is great to see a new tester in the ISO Tracker page. Thanks Helios!

Is anyone else planning to run a test of the latest Xenial installation
image? The more tests we have (especially on different hardware etc.),
the better.

Please let me know, as I need to let the Release Team know when we are
finished testing, and they want to release later today.

Sorry for not replying sooner.

At the moment, we don't include any photo organaniser/manager or photo
viewing type of applications in our photography meta package. We instead
concentrate on photo manipulation/editing applications.

There are many organisers and viewers out there as well as digikam. Are
there others out there that think it would be a good idea to include
one. Which one? Digikam?

[ubuntu-studio-users] Fwd: Ubuntu 16.10 (Yakkety Yak) End of Life reached on July 20 2017

2017-07-22 Thread Ross Gammon
Hi All,

I am sure you have all seen the announcement, but just in case - if you
are running Ubuntu Studio Yakkety (16.10), it might be a good time to
upgrade to Zesty (17.04). See a copy of the full announcement below.

Regards,

Ross

 Forwarded Message
Subject:Ubuntu 16.10 (Yakkety Yak) End of Life reached on July 20 2017
Date: Thu, 20 Jul 2017 23:23:31 +
From: Adam Conrad
To: ubuntu-annou...@lists.ubuntu.com
CC: ubuntu-security-annou...@lists.ubuntu.com

This is a follow-up to the End of Life warning sent earlier this month
to confirm that as of today (July 20, 2017), Ubuntu 16.10 is no longer
supported. No more package updates will be accepted to 16.10, and
it will be archived to old-releases.ubuntu.com in the coming weeks.

The original End of Life warning follows, with upgrade instructions:

Ubuntu announced its 16.10 (Yakkety Yak) release almost 9 months
ago, on October 13, 2016. As a non-LTS release, 16.10 has a 9-month
support cycle and, as such, the support period is now nearing its
end and Ubuntu 16.10 will reach end of life on Thursday, July 20th.

At that time, Ubuntu Security Notices will no longer include
information or updated packages for Ubuntu 16.10.

The supported upgrade path from Ubuntu 16.10 is via Ubuntu 17.04.
Instructions and caveats for the upgrade may be found at:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ZestyUpgrades

Ubuntu 17.04 continues to be actively supported with security updates
and select high-impact bug fixes. Announcements of security updates
for Ubuntu releases are sent to the ubuntu-security-announce mailing
list, information about which may be found at:

https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-security-announce

Since its launch in October 2004 Ubuntu has become one of the most
highly regarded Linux distributions with millions of users in homes,
schools, businesses and governments around the world. Ubuntu is Open
Source software, costs nothing to download, and users are free to
customise or alter their software in order to meet their needs.

On behalf of the Ubuntu Release Team,

Adam Conrad

I just tried running idjc on the command line in my standard Zesty
setup, and it fires up OK for me there as well. There is a lot of output
to the terminal as idjc starts up too. Maybe you should try running idjc
from the terminal, and if there are useful error messages you could
submit a bug on Launchpad (and include the messages logged to the terminal).

I have never used idjc personally myself, so I thought I would try
firing it up. I ran idjc in a freshly installed development version
(Artful - to be 17.10) of the standard XFCE Ubuntu Studio from the menu,
and it brought up a dialog from which I chose the default profile. When
clicking open, the Internet DJ Console opens up. I don't really know
what you are supposed to do next, but at least the program seems to run
for me.

How did you get the MATE desktop, did you manually install this from the
standard Ubuntu Studio installation? Are you on Zesty (17.04)? The
version is the same in Zesty & Artful (0.8.16).

Cheers,

Ross

Hi DjZU,

I am not familiar with xpra, as it does not come with the standard
Ubuntu Studio install, and I haven't used it myself. Therefore I cannot
offer much help.

But if you are getting a crash, then this really needs to be reported as
a bug in Launchpad so a wider audience can try to help with a fix.

Please see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs. It is

Apologies for not giving an update on this. Apparently, there have been
a few issues sorting this release out, and I had been waiting for an
update on the Release Team list.

Anyway, the images are available for testing now:
http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/372/builds

It is unlikely the release will occur tonight. It might be tomorrow, or
on Monday. But please, if you would like to have a go, then download the
16.04.2 images (or do a zsync of a previously downloaded image) and
begin testing.

Cheers,

Ross

[ubuntu-studio-users] Ubuntu Studio 16.04.2 Release Testing

2017-01-18 Thread Ross Gammon

Hi All,

The 2nd point release of Ubuntu Studio Xenial (16.04.2) is planned for
Thursday the 2nd February.

At that time we will need to test the ISO images to make sure that the
images work, and can be installed without error.

If you would like to help out (and it is your first time), you could get
prepared by clicking on the link at
http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/351/builds to download the
latest Xenial "daily" build. There are instructions on the download page
for how to use zsync to update the ISO image when testing eventually starts.

There are also links to instructions at the top of the page (linked
above) about how to do the test and report bugs. Please read these ahead
of time so you are ready on the day.

You can also ask here or on IRC for help.

Regards,

Ross

Re: [ubuntu-studio-users] Adding flowblade to Ubuntu studio

Hi Auro,

Thanks for reaching out, and for the suggestions.

Flowblade seems to already exist in Ubuntu
(http://packages.ubuntu.com/zesty/flowblade), so we could easily add
this to our seeds so it was installed automatically. But we have to be
careful that we don't just install everything and have a carefully
selected set of packages. Not having much time for playing with video
stuff at the moment, what extra features, or workflow support would
flowblade add on top of the other video applications?

Previous I have requested to add photoflow to gimp.

Photoflow is a bit harder, as it has not been packaged for Debian yet
(Debian is normally where our packages come from). It looks like it
almost made it in 2014
(https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=774005). Maybe you
could reply to that bug (copying in Laszlo), to chase up the status and
give a friendly push? Maybe if he is no longer interested, he has some
basic packaging that someone could take forward?

[ubuntu-studio-users] Ubuntu Studio - Yakkety 16.10 Testing

2016-10-08 Thread Ross Gammon

Hi All,

So we are less than one week away from the next release of Ubuntu Studio.

If you have a spare computer that you don't mind breaking (or
overwriting the data on the hard disk), and you would like to help make
the next release a beauty, then get testing!

The first Release Candidate has just been uploaded:

http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/368/builds

There are links to download the DVD images, and how to do the testing on
this page. Don't be afraid to submit bugs on Launchpad and list them in
your results on the tracker. We want to find & fix as many as we can
over the next week. If you need help, just ask on this list, or on IRC.

Regards,

Ross

[ubuntu-studio-users] Testing - Ubuntu Studio Yakkety 16.10 coming soon!

2016-08-21 Thread Ross Gammon
Hi All,

We are just coming up to the busy period now, on the approach to the
release of Ubuntu Studio Yakkety.

So if you would like to help out, please dust off that old PC you have
laying about, or that spare external disk, and download the latest daily
Yakkety ISO so that you are ready to go when the time comes.

I am told that the latest ISO is not working, but it is still a good
idea to download it, and then you can use zsync to update to the latest
ISO (instead of a complete new download) once it is successfully
rebuilt. The latest Yakkety dailies can be found here:
http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/360/builds
Click on either the amd64 link, or the i386 one, for Ubuntu Studio.
There you will find three installation Test Cases, and a link to the
download information.

Sing out on the "-devel" list or IRC if you need help.

Note: Please don't install anything on a machine with stuff you don't
want to lose! We don't want any tears.

Thursday August 25th - Yakkety Beta 1
-

In the days leading up to the Beta 1 release, a link for "Yakkety Beta
1" will appear on this page:
http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker
This is the time to zsync to the latest ISO, and begin running the 3
installation tests, and reporting your findings, good or bad. Don't be
scared to file a bug. They can always be closed.

Be aware that if serious bugs are found, there might be a rebuild of the
ISO triggered, and we will have to run the tests again.

It is important that we have as many testers as possible, and find as
may bugs as possible, so that we have time to try and fix them before
the release in October.

Application Testing
---

In addition to the installation tests above, we also need to
continuously test our main Ubuntu Studio applications. Once you have a
working Yakkety development release installation, go to our package
tracker and run a few of our 20 manual test cases:
http://packages.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/361/builds/117793/testcases

These test cases just give you the steps to gently check that the
applications still run without crashing. If you know the program, you
are of course welcome to "kick the tyres" a bit harder!

End
---

Thanks for reading this far :-)

Please get stuck into the testing and help make Yakkety a great release.
If you would like some personal satisfaction along the way, see if you
can become a top tester:
http://packages.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/reports/testers

Ross Gammon

Ralf is right. This package is not included in the default install of

A quick google confirms that this is a long standing problem (but not
one I've seen myself):
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apt-xapian-index/+bug/363695

It was a long thread, so I didn't read. But there might be some help in
there somewhere. And you could always add your experience to the bug (or
submit a new one, referencing this one).

Cheers,

Re: [ubuntu-studio-users] lack of screensaver

2016-08-10 Thread Ross Gammon
Glad you managed to work it all out David! And thanks for the tips for
others that are also missing them.

I am afraid that screensavers are not the "in thing" they once were (in
the days of CRT screens), and many distros no longer set them up by
default. The Ubuntu Studio screensaver package was deliberately dropped
because of this, and because of the lack of resource to maintain the
package.

Cheers,

Ross

[ubuntu-studio-users] 16.04 Release Candidate Testing - for release Thursday 21st

2016-04-17 Thread Ross Gammon
Hi All,

On Thursday, hopefully Ubuntu Studio 16.04 will be released. So, if
anyone would like to give a hand in testing the ISO, that would be great.

The first Release Candidate (RC) has been uploaded to
http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/359/builds (Xenial Final).
To test, we boot the ISO, install it, and try a few applications to make
sure everything is working. You may then mark the test a success at
http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com, or report any bugs.

Hopefully this Release Candidate is the one that is released, but there
may be other release candidates if bugs are found. The best thing is to
get a few tests done early in the week, and keep checking back to see if
a new test is required (especially on Thursday).

More detailed information about how to test can be found here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuStudio/Testing/ISOTesting.

Happy Testing,

Regards,

Ross

[ubuntu-studio-users] Fwd: [ubuntu-studio-devel] Ubuntu Studio Xenial - Final Beta ISO Testing

2016-03-22 Thread Ross Gammon

Sorry - this didn't come through. So forwarding.

 Forwarded Message
Subject: [ubuntu-studio-devel] Ubuntu Studio Xenial - Final Beta ISO Testing

Hi All,

On Thursday 24th March the 2nd Beta (Final Beta) of Ubuntu Studio (and
other Ubuntu flavours) will be released. So please help by occasionally
testing an ISO image from today and especially on the 24th.

The more testing, the more bugs we can identify and try to fix before
the Ubuntu Studio Xenial 16.04 release on 21st April.

*Short instructions on how to test:*

1. Get a launchpad account, if you haven't, at http://launchpad.net
2. Head to http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com, and login
3. Go to http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/358/builds/ and
follow the links for Ubuntu Studio to download the ISO, and to go to the
test cases.
4. Make sure your to do a checksum on your ISO before you report bugs.
5. If you find bugs, check at the bottom of the test case page if the
bug was already reported, then make sure to include it in your test
results. If no one had reported the bug, in a terminal, do: ubuntu-bug

6. Even if all tests are completed, but the build is not yet marked
*ready*, you may still help testing and submitting bug reports.

*Long instructions:*

For those new to ISO testing, please refer to:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuStudio/Testing/ISOTesting

For even more extensive information, please check out:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/ISO

There may be a need to re-spin a new ISO image during the process. Using
zsync can speed up getting the latest image.

If you need help at any stage, you should find someone on IRC
(#ubuntustudio or #ubuntustudio-devel) who can help, or you can ask here.

Ross
