Hi,

thanks for reporting the issue.

It has been fixed in Launchpad for the 20.04 release, I'm not sure when
(and if) it will be available though.

Ciao.

[Ubuntu-translations-coordinators] [Bug 1877401] Re: The Italian translation is not complete

2020-05-07 Thread Milo Casagrande
Hi,

to be honest I'm not sure why this has untranslated strings.
Upstream is complete, and this one has been correctly imported in Launchpad:

https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evince

and has no untranslated strings.

[Ubuntu-translations-coordinators] [Bug 1877402] Re: The Italian translation is not complete

2020-05-07 Thread Milo Casagrande
Hi,

the Italian translation is complete upstream:

https://l10n.gnome.org/vertimus/simple-scan/gnome-3-36/po/it/

and it has been at least since GNOME 3.34.

As far as I can tell, there should not be any differences between upstream
GNOME and Ubuntu.
Of note is that the last updated Italian translation available in Launchpad
appears to be from 2018.

I'm not really keen on updating the translation on Launchpad, since they
should be synced automatically with upstream.

Bug description:
There has been a similar report recently, but I'm not sure if it was
  the exact same one.

If I look at the POT template for simple-scan it looks like it is up
to date with the upstream one: same strings count, same strings.

The PO file though doesn't seem to have been imported, at least for
the Italian language. The last changed date in Launchpad is set to
2016-03-15, but the upstream translation for the 3.28 cycle has been
completed (and it was complete also for the 3.26 cycle).

A few links to check things out:

  * The Launchpad Italian translation:
https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/bionic/+source/simple-scan/+pots/simple-scan/it/+translate
  * The upstream Italian translation:
https://l10n.gnome.org/vertimus/simple-scan/master/po/it

Upstream hasn't branched 3.28 yet, so I wonder if this is just a
matter of waiting for a new release to be imported in Launchpad.

On a side note: simple-scan doesn't seem to be the only package with
this "problem" (template in sync with upstream, but not the actual
translations). I could see at least evolution-data-server, and gnome-
  online-accounts.

[Ubuntu-translations-coordinators] Zesty translation focus / queue

2017-02-15 Thread Milo Casagrande
Hello everyone,

first thing: is anyone still listening here? :-)

I was noticing today that the translation focus for Ubuntu is still
set to Yakkety (16.10), and in a couple of months there is Zesty
(17.04) coming out.

Has this been left like that intentionally? I can easily switch the
focus to the correct one.
Hopefully, the import queue should unlock itself as well.

Ciao.

[Ubuntu-translations-coordinators] [Bug 1312401] Re: Filter type names incorrect after upgrade to 14.04 and results don't correspond to the selected types

2015-03-01 Thread Milo Casagrande
I approved string 15 on the unity-scope-home for Italian, but it is
still not clear to me how those strings are used in unity.

Since they look pretty similar to GNOME strings that are used to provide
search terms, usually we translate them in the same way. Meaning that
original words have to be kept in order to provide search terms.

From what I gather from this bug report, those strings are not used in
that way (each word appears to be a positional value). If that's the
case, I would suggest to add translator comments for those strings with
instructions on how they are used and how they should be treated.

Hi,

apologies for the late reply, the team is not dead, maybe we are all a little
bit busy.
I'll appoint your team to handle the Ubuntu translations.

A couple of things to take care:
- You list a lot of languages in the team page, better review that to what is
the language of the team.
- You are using the Launchpad provided mailing list: when it is approved, you
can request an @lists.ubuntu.com one, and it is reccommended actually, since
the Launchpad mailing lists are available only to team members.
- Keep in mind to create Yddish specific translation guidelines and glossary,
or use any upstream ones if already available.

[Ubuntu-translations-coordinators] Project bosniauniversetranslation

2013-01-15 Thread Milo Casagrande
Hello everyone,

yesterday on IRC we had a discussion with Laura (in CC), David and
Jeroen regarding this team on Launchpad:

https://launchpad.net/bosnianuniversetranslation

I contacted the owne of the project, what follows is his reply:

##

Quoting Milo Casagrande m...@ubuntu.com:
Well, let me give some bit of history. I teach Operating Systems course at
University of Sarajevo, and my students can choose kind of homework for 10% of
the final grade. The most of students prefer to translate Ubuntu to Bosnian
language. Yearly they are about 60 students who participate in this project. In
previous years, Launchpad allowed translation of KDE and big part of GNOME, so
there was enough job for all of them. Launchpad is wonderful for coordinating
such project, it has big translation memory, and I do not need to send po files
to every student. And it is much better and faster than Pootle.
But Launchpad Ubuntu started to decline, it first dropped XFCE, then
ekiga, then synaptics, then Firefox, then many GNOME applications, then KOffice
and finally all of KDE. In Ubuntu repository alone there is no enough strings
for all participants. As sending po files by E-mail is not practical, I set up
this repository.

Currently I use it for translating KDE (Bosnian only), until yesterday 4.9, and
now I started to translate 4.10. My students used this repository to translate
KDE 4.9 and I uploaded it on December 21 to upstream KDE (about 35000 new
strings), so it is not true that is was not used anywhere else (however only
for Bosnian language). I have also access to LibreOffice upstream, and
currently I negotiate with GNOME.

I had one problem with exporting, though. After exporting, Launchpad
Contributors in Your Names field is messy, and repeated after each exporting.
So, I had to manually fix it.

The semester is approaching to its end, so I do not expect large activity on
bosnianuniversetranslation after January 24.

However, is there any hope, that this wait a litle bit for general universe
translation site will be ready before September 2013? There are promises for it
since 2008, but I am only witness of reduction of main repository.

###

The project seems also, in some way, reasonable, looks like they are
working with upstream too. Only they are importing an enormous amount
of PO files, for one team's sake.

I'm not so sure how to deal with it in this case... any suggestions?
Ciao.

Re: [Ubuntu-translations-coordinators] About bosnianuniversetranslation Project

2013-01-15 Thread Milo Casagrande
Hello Samir,

thanks for getting back to me.
I added Jeoren, Laura and David in CC, they are all involved with
translations in Launchpad and Ubuntu, and might give you an idea of
what can be done or what are the issues we are facing.

What you are doing is remarkable, we really do not want to stop you
from doing it, I hope my first message was not misleading on that
front.
As it stands today, though, some of that work might be void due to how
universe translations work in Launchpad.

As long as you are actively sending upstream (to the original
projects) all the translations done, that's fine, but that will be a
manually task, probably even in the future.

The problem we are facing is on how you set up the project:

https://launchpad.net/bosnianuniversetranslation

And in particular the translation part:

https://translations.launchpad.net/bosnianuniversetranslation

If I go there, at the translation link, I can start translating even
into my own language, or even into your own language: the translation
policy is set to open.
This can, and probably will, lead to work that will never be used if
somebody discovers the project and starts translating into their own
language.

What is possible to do, might be this:
- Set up a new translation *group* dedicated to this task
- Add the Bosnian translation team as member to this group, or even
set up a separate Bosnian translation team for the universe packages,
administerd also by the Bosnian translation team
- Ask your students to join the Bosnian translation team, or the newly
created team
- Set the permission of the translation to Restricted, so that only
the people in the group and the team can translate

With time, it would even be possible to grow this group into a full
translation group dedicated for translating Ubuntu universe packages.
Some links about translations in Launchpad and Ubuntu:

https://help.launchpad.net/Translations
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Translations

Let us know what you think!
Ciao.

I fear we will have to use #ubuntu-translators: if everything is

Just a quick heads up to say that I've just done a quick cleanup of the

 translate during the Christmas break:

 https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/raring

I've not started language pack generation yet, as I still need to find a
maintainer now that pitti moved to the QA team.

I'm flying all over the place during Christmas, and I'm still busy with
another project, so I won't be able to make much more than this until
the 1st or 2nd week of January.

Could someone give me a hand announcing the opening on the mailing

Has the announce already been done?
Otherwise, I'm around during this period to help out.

[Ubuntu-translations-coordinators] [Bug 1053837] [NEW] String missing a translator comment

2012-09-21 Thread Milo Casagrande
Public bug reported:

Hi,

while translating unity-lens-applications, there is a string that in may
different language is hard to translate correctly (and can lead up to
long discussions).

The string is: Free.
The difficulty here is understanding if the string means free as in speech or
free as in beer. A translator comment just before the string would me much
appreciated in this cases.

The Ubuntu Software Center uses something like this to clear the meaning:
TRANSLATORS: Free here means Gratis
TRANSLATORS: Free here means Libre

The string is located in src/daemon.vala.

[Ubuntu-translations-coordinators] [Bug 1053846] [NEW] Same translatable string used in different contexts

2012-09-21 Thread Milo Casagrande
Public bug reported:

While going through the translation in software-center, I found one
string, that is usually hard to translate correctly without a little
bit of context, that is being used in three different contexts, with at
least two different meanings.

The translatable string is: Free.

The string already has translator comments before, but unfortunately
this is not enough. The same string looks like is used in 4 different
files, and has 2 different meanings, at least looking at the translator
comments before.

The problem is that Launchpad is showing us only 1 translatable string,
instead of at least 2.

The translator comments used are:
TRANSLATORS: Free here means Gratis
TRANSLATORS: Free here means Libre
TRANSLATORS: Free here means Gratis

The strings are located in the following files:
 ../softwarecenter/db/application.py:607
../softwarecenter/db/application.py:622
../softwarecenter/ui/gtk3/views/appdetailsview.py:402
../softwarecenter/ui/gtk3/views/appdetailsview.py:691

It would be best to use msgctxt: the problem being if Python 2.7
supports it out-of-the-box.

[Ubuntu-translations-coordinators] [Bug 991217] Re: Compiz description not translated in software center in italian

2012-05-14 Thread Milo Casagrande
Hi,

the translations for the Compiz package comes from the ddtp-main
component, and in Italian they have been translated since 2009, albeit
with an error that I fixed now.

This is not an Italian translation issue, but I guess it is better to
take a look in general if this is a problem with other languages too, or
a cache problem as there once was with apt and software center (problem
of which I can't remember the bug number or the possible fix).

[Ubuntu-translations-coordinators] [Bug 988258] Re: Cartella home label in launcher needs to be named 'Cartella Home'

2012-05-07 Thread Milo Casagrande
Hello,

as suggested in another bug, I kindly invite you to discuss these issues
directly on the translators mailing list.

With particular reference to this issue, it has been discussed quite a
lot, and is a controversial one. It is not a real bug, there is not a
real error in the translation, and has been suggested quite often to
change its translation. It is not a rather easy task too, since we
cannot change it directly in Ubuntu, we have to work with upstream
(Gnome in particular).

I'm leaving this bug open, and I will bring this discussion up again on
the translators mailing list. I suggest you to subscribe to the mailing
list if you want to take part into this discussion.

Ciao.

Hm, good point. I see that in Catalan there are now 115 untranslated

Milo, you've been following this more closely, do you think the recent
 upload caused the untranslated strings?

I think it is related, but I do not know how big is the difference in
strings between the old and the new version. Roughly, looks like 40
strings.

Also, consider that there is the problem of the statistics not
updating, but this looks like is not the case for Catalan: the 115
strings are real untranslated strings.

Re: [Ubuntu-translations-coordinators] Launchpad Strings Count

2011-11-28 Thread Milo Casagrande
Hello everybody,

I did not open a new bug, 'cause I think this one is pretty related to
the problem:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-translations/+bug/877195

I just subscribed the UTC team to the bug... hopefully we will see it
fixed pretty soon.
Ciao.

[Ubuntu-translations-coordinators] Launchpad Strings Count

2011-11-27 Thread Milo Casagrande
Hello everybody,

did anybody else experienced strange behavior with the way Launchpad
shows the statistics for each translation?

Looking here:
https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/oneiric/+source/onboard/+pots/onboard/it/+details

Looks like there are 77 untranslated strings, but it is not like that,
they are much less.
Same thing happened the other day with translations a member of the
Italian team did, and I noticed that Launchpad still shows those
strings as untranslated (the translations were done 2 day ago).

Is it a know problem?

Resuming this discussion.

If there are no objections, I contact the onboard developers for this
sharing problem and ask them to use restricted permission on thei
translation if they want to use the sharing feature.

Re: [Ubuntu-translations-coordinators] Task re-shuffling and more coordinators?

2011-11-13 Thread Milo Casagrande
Hello everyone!

I totally agree with David here.
As David also said, one thing that maybe we should do more to
advertise the UTC team, is to blog a little bit more about what we do.
All of us is on planet.ubuntu.com, so even using our own blog would
work great. Doing that people might come to know more this team and
start asking or being interested in it.

[Ubuntu-translations-coordinators] Sharing with open permission

2011-10-23 Thread Milo Casagrande
Hello everybody,

I was looking at our translations stats today and spot the package
onboard that has some untranslated strings. I browse a little bit
the strings and then headed to the upstream version that is sharing
translations with out Ubuntu version (Oneiric).

I found out that the upstream permissions are open, so, anybody can
leave translations for like any language...

Do we have a policy for that or is there anything in Launchpad that
can help us prevent this?

If it is not a problem, I will contact the onboard developers and ask
them to restrict the permissions of their project.

Ciao.

Re: [Ubuntu-translations-coordinators] Fwd: Draft of the language pack release schedule for Oneiric for review

2011-10-14 Thread Milo Casagrande
Hello everybody,

I read carefully the proposed schedule, and to me it looks OK.

If we can also plan two full langpacks, I would suggest to use the
third and fifth, or fourth and sixth uploads, in order now to provide
extensively time for translators to update documentation translations.
The third langpack is in January, and as David said is within the
Canonical Engineering Rally... I do not know if maybe that one would
be better to be a delta langpack.

Thanks Kenneth for the hard work!

Ciao.

[Ubuntu-translations-coordinators] [Bug 869935] [NEW] Software Center help translations not provided

2011-10-07 Thread Milo Casagrande
Public bug reported:

Hi,

while testing the latest version of Ubuntu for the upcoming release, I
openend the help of Software Center in order to see if the translations
provided were shipped.

Even with all the latest langpacks installed, this is not happening, the
help is still in English, even if the translations from the upstream
development branch are complete. This is happening for my locale
(Italian) with langpack installed in date 2011-10-07. We need
confirmation from other languages too.

Thank you for your attention.

Yes, but as another string in the same file, you cannot find it in the
translation template.
Even the string that starts with:

is marked, but it doesn't show up.
The only string that I can find in the template is this one:

Re: [Ubuntu-translations-coordinators] [Bug 841000] Re: Inconsistent or not clear strings for l10n

2011-09-05 Thread Milo Casagrande
Hi Thomas,

On Mon, Sep 5, 2011 at 13:17, Matthew Paul Thomas m...@canonical.com wrote:
To my untrained eye, the first two pairs look like they're correctly set
up as plural forms: they're both using gettext.ngettext(). What do you
 mean by inconsistent?

they are correct with regards to the plural form, yes, I was pointing
to the fact that these:

Try a href=search-unsupported:the %(amount)d item that matches/a
in software not maintained by Canonical.
Try a href=search-unsupported:the %(amount)d items that match/a
in software not maintained by Canonical.

end with a full-stop, while these don't:

Try a href=search-unsupported:the %(amount)d item that matches/a
in software not maintained by Canonical
Try a href=search-unsupported:the %(amount)d items that match/a
in software not maintained by Canonical

and they are basically the same. Having them more consistent, means
that there will be only one entry to translate for us instead of two.

The same almost applies here too, with these:

Try a href=search-parent/the item in %(category)s/a that matches
Try a href=search-parent/the %(n)d items in %(category)s/a that match

And these:

Try a href=search-parent:the item in %(category)s/a that matches.
Try a href=search-parent:the %(n)d items in %(category)s/a that match.

The difference is in the full-stop at the end of the sentence, and in
this case the use of / instead of : in the href field.
Don't know if that is a GTK2/3 difference for hrefs.

Ciao.

  The inconsistent strings follows:

  Try a href=search-unsupported:the %(amount)d items that match/a in

  The latter are located in:
  ../softwarecenter/ui/gtk3/widgets/searchaid.py
  The former in:
  ../softwarecenter/ui/gtk/softwarepane.py

I don't know which one is the blessed way of ending the sentence, but having
only one could be interesting.
Also, on similar strings, I noticed that the href in one case ended with a
slash / while here with the colon :. I report the strings for reference:
Try a href=search-parent/the item in %(category)s/a that matches
  Try a href=search-parent/the %(n)d items in %(category)s/a that match

That also are similar to these:
Try a href=search-parent:the item in %(category)s/a that matches.
  Try a href=search-parent:the %(n)d items in %(category)s/a that match.

Apart from the fullstop at the end of the sentence and the colon
  instead of the slash.

The not so clear strings are as follows:

  ETA: %s (located in ../softwarecenter/ui/gtk/pendingview.py)

Non-tech people might don't even know what that acronym stands for.

Modify Your %s Review (located in various files)

Here it could be interesting to have a named variable or a
translator comments, since in many languages that %s could be
positioned in different parts of the sentence based on what will be
  substituted with it.

No items match %s%s%s (located in
../softwarecenter/ui/gtk3/widgets/searchaid.py)
No items in %s match %s%s%s (located in
../softwarecenter/ui/gtk3/widgets/searchaid.py)

Here the triple %s will be substituted with: %s (using the Uniceod char for
the double quote)
Many languages might use different double quotes rather than the hard coded
Unicode ones. I don't know if that has been done for some specific reasons, but
it could be interesting to have those quotes directly in the translatable
string.

I apologise for not proposing a patch for all of this now, but I would
like to understand if any of those was intentional or if they can be
  fix.

  Thank you for your attention.

Here it could be interesting to have a named variable or a translator
comments, since in many languages that %s could be positioned in
different parts of the sentence based on what will be substituted with
it.

Ciao.

Inconsistent or not clear strings for l10n

Status in Ubuntu Translations:

Bug description:
  Hi,

while translating software-center in Ubuntu for Oneiric, I found some
strings that are inconsistent, resulting in duplicated translation
messages, or strings that are not really clear from an i18n/l10n point
  of view.

  The inconsistent strings follows:

  Try a href=search-unsupported:the %(amount)d item that matches/a in
software not maintained by Canonical.
  Try a href=search-unsupported:the %(amount)d items that match/a in
software not maintained by Canonical.

  Try a href=search-unsupported:the %(amount)d item that matches/a in
software not maintained by Canonical
  Try a href=search-unsupported:the %(amount)d items that match/a in
software not maintained by Canonical

Any ETA on fixing this? I'll attach a trivia patch, not linking a branch

[Ubuntu-translations-coordinators] Ubuntu Wallpapers Translations

2011-03-26 Thread Milo Casagrande
Hello translators,

I was looking at some translations today, and found out that for my
language (Italian) the translations of the ubuntu-wallpapers strings
are not present in the system.

I was looking at Maverick, but I think the situation is similar also
for Natty, and probably even for Lucid.
Downloading the ubuntu-wallpapers source package I see in the po/
directory only the fr.po and sk.po files.

How should we move in this situation? Is it better we file a bug
against the ubuntu-wallpaper at least for Natty?
Should we ask other languages if they have the same problem? What
about your language?

Re: [Ubuntu-translations-coordinators] Opening Natty translations real soon!

Hi all,

As announced a while back [1], the imports queue for Natty is already
open. Now I'd like to open the UI for translations, most probably
 Monday.

I went through the imports queue yesterday [2] and I cleaned up or
approved the most obvious or important packages I saw, so I think we
 should be in good shape.

Looks really in good shape compared to what we used to have! :-)

We'll need to check out what needs to be done with the bunch of KDE
templates in the queue, but it's quite early in the cycle (i.e. things
are not considered to be stable) and I think this should not be a
blocker for opening translations. I believe some of them will need to be
simply approved or their source package or path changed as a result of a
 reorganization upstream.

If you've got some time and you could have a look at the imports queue
and see if there is any template you can act on or if you notice
anything worth reporting, that'd be awesome.

Thanks for the update. I'll keep an eye on it to see if there is
something that needs manual intervention, if I don't know what to do,
I'll ask here before.

Yep (I should have done that when approving the docs template, but
will double check that everything is in order).

We're trying to get the 3.2.1 translations imported so that they can be
used for calculating the maverick stats [1]. As a result, you might see
them enabled for a while until they've been imported (they cannot be if
 they are disabled).

Reverting what I said on my previous message, please don't change their
status. Now we are trying to get them imported first, before they are
 disabled.

Sorry about any confusion this might have caused.

No problem. I waited a little bit to see where things were heading (if
you were disabling them or not), so, everything should be normal.

I remember David sent an email about the OpenOffice translations that

Re: [Ubuntu-translations-coordinators] Software Center Help Translations

2010-02-25 Thread Milo Casagrande
Hi,

2010/2/25 David Planella david.plane...@ubuntu.com:

I had a quick chat with Michael Vogt and suggested him to integrate the
help file with ubuntu-docs. This would give the benefits that:

      * Translations would be more visible to translators, as they'd be
in the Ubuntu templates list at translations.lp.net/ubuntu
      * They'd be shipped as part of ubuntu-docs, and integrated in the
package's workflow (i.e. translations would be built before
        NonLanguagePackDeadline)
      * This will make it possible to ship only the translations in the
user's locale (as opposed to all translations). Now ubuntu-docs
        are part of language packs.
      * It would be consistent with what other Ubuntu applications do at
the moment with documentation (e.g. usb-creator)

Michael told me he hadn't any strong view for one approach or the other,
so I suggested I'd contact the documentation team to integrate the
 documentation in ubuntu-docs.

Before I do that, what do you guys think?

I think we should go that way for now, or we might end up with no
translations at all for the Software Center help.
But I think we should really consider shipping separate packages for
documentation in the future, and also maybe talk with the doc team
about splitting up the documentation (but that's another topic
probably not for this mailing list).

Ciao.

[Ubuntu-translations-coordinators] postgresql po files stuck in the queue

2009-08-10 Thread Milo Casagrande
Hi,

also postgresql has a lot of po file stuck in the queue.

Looking at one of those files, looks like they don't have the template set.

Should we set the template for those files?

https://translations.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/karmic/+source/postgresql-8.3/+imports

Take for example the first one: the source path says something like
backend, but since there's no backend template, I guess its
template is the postgres-8.3.

https://translations.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/karmic/+source/postgresql-8.3

Another one has initdb in the source path, and there is a
initdb-8.3 template.

How should we proceed?

Re: [Ubuntu-translations-coordinators] .po files stuck in the import queue

2009-08-06 Thread Milo Casagrande
Hi Arne,

2009/8/6 Arne Goetje a...@canonical.com:

The .translation.tar.gz tarballs get created on build time when
pkgbinarymangler is installed. These tarballs are fed to Rosetta and
include all the templates and .po files for a given source package. In
order to find out packaging bugs, we need to investigate these tarballs.

Change the date in line 34 to include the latest import date of the
package you are looking for. The script will output all imports since
that date. So, you may need to filter the output. :)

Isn't there a way to specify the source package I'm looking for?
Running that script takes ages, at least for me. I was trying to see
the m4 tarball file (the first in the import queue), but it really
takes a lot of time.

What about xpi files? There is one at the beginning of the queue, how
do we handle those? Same as others?
