Just go to the directory it's in and type "sudo chmod 755 .bin"

You will be promoted for your password, supply it.

Then you simply type ./.bin

And it should install.

You don't need Wine - it isn't a Windows application, as far as I know.

Hi,

You will need to make the binary file executable first. Right click on
the file, select properties and go to the permissions tab. There
should be a checkbox saying something like "Make executable". Tick the
box.

Should then be a case of double clicking on it. Although I'm sure it
depends on Wine, so it may invoke apt-get and install and download
Wine unless it is already bundled with it..

There is a video projector which works well when I tried it with

I want to use Ubuntu Intrepid on the same laptop for my presentation.
How do I get Ubuntu to send images to the video projector?

I'm afraid I'm not familiar with eeepc. Nor what the Kernel differences
are.

Which is the default option (the one its on when the menu first comes
up). If is the 3rd option, then try booting the first (probably the
latest) kernel.

Also, when you say "it shows you are running". Where are you getting
that from. Can you type "uname -a" in a terminal and post that info.

Cheers,
Michael

Well, that's no good, I noticed that the third option was the eeepc
option, which is what it boots up into, and when I tried the the 5th
option, it doesnt pick up the wireless network at all, its as if its
isnt even installed.

The funny thing, as I have already mentioned, even though I click on
the 3rd option, the eeepc kernel, it shows I'm running
Ubuntu 2.24.1
not eeepc. So, I am really confused why that is happening. Hope its not
confusing to you.

[ubuntu-uk] Ubuntu article in current Micro Mart

2009-03-17 Thread Mark Fraser
Not sure if anyone has read it, but there is an article in the current issue
of Micro Mart (12-18 March) about a Windows user attempting to install
Ubuntu.

Biggest concern is under 'Evening Four' where he tries to edit menu.lst and
finds he can't save it as he doesn't have the right permissions. So, what
does he do? He creates a root user, logs in as root using the option enable
automatic login.

Hopefully someone thinking of trying Ubuntu for the first time won't pay any
attention to this article.

I've also got this issue and there's a bug open on launchpad:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/332903

For the time being your old kernel should be installed. When you start
up you should get a prompt for a few seconds saying "press escape to see
menu" or similar. Do that and then you should get a menu of installed
kernels, the 2nd non-safemode entry should be from before the update...

adam.

Ah, so it might not be my fault, I'm crossing my fingers it isnt. Thank
you for letting me know.

When you say the second non-safemode entry, is that the eee pc
non-safemode entry? I installed eee pc because the full version was
causing me problems with the network, and it wasnt finding wireles. It
was working fine until the update, the wireless connection was being
found as soon as it booted. I use the wireless a lot, as I use the
netbook whilst watching tv. I also take it out with me too.

For some reason, my Acer One Netbook, running Ubuntu 2.24.1which is
kind
of confusing, since I thought it was supposed to be an eee pc
version. I
have this feeling, last night, there was an update, which I installed,
and its today I cant connect via the network. I dont have a clue what
has happened to the eeepc installation.

Please can somebody help me please? I just have no clue about what has
happened here.

Thank you

John

I've also got this issue and there's a bug open on launchpad:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/332903

For the time being your old kernel should be installed. When you start
up you should get a prompt for a few seconds saying "press escape to see
menu" or similar. Do that and then you should get a menu of installed
kernels, the 2nd non-safemode entry should be from before the update...

Not sure where the idea of NO games for linux comes from
http://www.happypenguin.org/

has loads

don't forget games such as enemy territory, quake, doom series,
wesnorth, and Ubuntu comes with loads of games (try doing a search for
games in synaptic)

what sort of games are you looking for, don't just say good games
because different people have different interpretation of good games,
esp when you have 8 bit emulators, and can play games from the old
spectrum, graphics / sound aside, they are still good games if you look
at playability.

I'm a linux gamer where possible, although I still have a windows
partition around and, depending on which games you wish to play, I would
suggest that this is the best solution. Having said that there are quite
a few commercial games with linux ports, but they tend to be older
games. All ID software games (except quake live, but that's supposedly
coming) have been ported although the linux installers can be hard to
find. Unreal tournament and UT2004 have native linux ports, the UT3
linux port has supposedly been held back due to some legal issues but is
apparently still on the cards.
On the open source front I'd recommend Battle for Wesnoth, a very
nice turn based strategy game. There's also Openarena, warsow, nexuiz
and numerous others for your FPS fix.
Finally there's wine, which is an implementation of the windows API
under linux. Some games run very well under this, especially older
games. There can be some graphical issues or other problems however.
I've not tried too many games under wine but I have had success with
every blizzard game I've tried and portal ran well.

Some sites worth looking at are www.happypenguin.org - which lists linux
games, both open source and commercial, and allows users to rate them.
Another site is tuxgames.com, which is an online shop specialising in
linux games.

Hope this helps :)

Rik,

I think that the main problem for gamers coming to Linux is that there
isn't any 'big name' games available, unless you want to try using
Wine/Crossover. However, there are games for Linux if you are prepared
look. I bookmarked the following articles some time ago that might be
of interest:

armagetron and bzflag are two simple but fun networked games.

Also, I quite enjoy flightgear.

I used to hang out on openarena.
Now days I do things like sleep, but if you you like that kind of game
its there.
Both my parents are horrifically addicted to ksirtet (tetris).

There's a old, but good review that made slashdot of the best Free
Software games... go look it up. :)

When you turn on your netbook, there should be an Acer BIos screen
that flashes up, maybe saying something about Acer. When this has gone
away, try repeatedly pressing esc, until you get a menu. Using the
down key, navigate to the last option that isn't 'Safe Mode' and isn't
'Memtest'. If it was a kernel update, this should fix it for that
boot. If it does work, reply an we'll give you some help editing the
GRUB menu.lst

You might not class it as a 'good game', but Frozen Bubbles very
addictive, runs on Linux (it was ported to Windows, not the other way
round), and is FLOSS.

There's a fair few lists of games online.

Personally I've played Warsow (which is in the repository), Darwinia
and Defcon, but not many others. I use consoles for gaming rather than
PCs personally.

Cheers,
