[ubuntu-uk] Evolution

2015-05-10 Thread Norman Silverstone
My wife has used Evolution for several years with very few problems
however, recently, she has reported a rather unusual fault and I am
supposed to put it right. Sometimes, a message which is listed will not
show the body of that message, who it's to and who it's from are there
but no message. If reply is selected the message appears in the reply
window and if print is selected the message is printed. Thus, we know
the message is available but it will not display. To make things worse,
this problem is not tied to any particular sender and seems to be
intermittent.

I would be most grateful for suggestions on how to troubleshoot this
problem as I know very little about Evolution. Furthermore, I have no
idea what my wife may have done out of the ordinary when using her
computer and neither does she.

Thanks in advance

[ubuntu-uk] GDU

2014-11-29 Thread Norman Silverstone
My PC is dual booted with Xubuntu 14.04.1 LTS and Windows 7 and the
graphics is derived from the MB. I would like to trial some software in
Windows which requires a GDU addition to the computer and I would
welcome some advice on what might be suitable without causing problems
with Xubuntu. Because this is only a trial I am looking for the most
economical route.

According to the supplier of the software any of the following units
would be suitable:-

NVIDIA GeForce 8 Series, GeForce 9 Series, GeForce 100 Series, GeForce
200 Series, GeForce 300 Series, GeForce 400 Series, GeForce 500 Series,
ATI Radeon HD2000 Series, Radeon HD3000 Series, Radeon HD4000 Series,
Radeon HD5000 Series, Radeon HD6000 Series.

Thanks for your help

Thank you all for responding to my request and, from what I have read,

There's an article in issue 88 of Full Circle magazine (page 15) about
creating a minimal Ubuntu desktop. Might be worth a look:
http://fullcirclemagazine.org

Windows XP shipped to OEMs in 2001 and the public in 2002. This PC
probably predates the 21st century.

It *maxes out* at 96MB RAM:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=37114start=15

You can forget any current distro on it. It's even older than I
thought with my previous comment. It might *just about* run DSL.

The web browser is Google Chrome.

Example actions:

On workspace 1, open a browser window

Move to workspace 2, and using the launcher browser icon, right click,
and choose 'open a new window'. A new browser window opens in

Move to workspace 3, and open say a Libre Office writer text doc or
something.

Note the white dot marks around the icons of the apps which are running.
The white dot marks are triangles or empty chevron, context dependant
on workspace use. Current workspace shows solid dot.

Now, single left click on the browser icon in the launcher. You should
expect to see enlarged thumbnails of the two (possibly different)
browser windows, you can choose one. With pc with 3d graphics
facility, you can drag and drop between the thumbnail workspaces.

Now click on the launcher icon for libre office. You are taken to the

My personal preference is for the workspaces to be arranged linear

It looks like Adobe Connect Desktop is an Adobe Air application, for which
Adobe discontinued support a few years ago. You should be able to find the
last release for Linux if you search for it. There can be some work to be
done to make it install on newer versions of Ubuntu. The other option

You have missed something. When it says install alongside Windows,
that does not say or mean or imply anything about *where* on which
disk it's going to go. It just means it will leave Windows in place,
possibly resizing it, and make a new partition for Ubuntu.

If you want to pick where, you have to click the customise button and
make your own. Surely you have done this before?

Part of my problem is that I just expect everything to happen without
really understanding what is going on. You are correct in what you say
and the lesson to be learnt from this episode is beware, if you have two

Windows can't read Linux filesystems. If you have one whole drive
partitioned for each, then it is normal for the Linux one to be
invisible to Windows, except in Disk Manager:

(Start | Run | diskmgmt.msc)

In Linux, you should be able to see and indeed mount the Windows
drive. What does Gparted show?

Terminal - sudo apt-get install gparted -y ; sudo gparted

I am beginning to wonder if something has gone very wrong. I ran sudo
parted -l and two drives were shown, /dev/sda 500GB and /dev/sdb 250GB.
In the past, when I have installed Ubuntu I was offered the choice to
set up partitions but this time I was not. Could this mean that Xbuntu
is now installed on the 250GB drive which is not showing on the desktop.
If that is the case then a lot of data which was stored could have been
lost as the smaller drive was used just for that.

Are each missing the same HDD, or different ones? If you cannot
distinguish them by size or similar, you can use smartctl to get the
serial number;

 smartctl -a /dev/sda | head

The fog is beginning to clear. By the look of things Windows 7 is on the
500GB drive and Xubuntu is on the 250GB drive. Why did this happen? I
always thought that when making a dual install the Ubuntu OS went on to
the same drive as Windows and this is what I want - operating systems on
one drive each in its own partition and the other drive for storing data
and so on. This is how it was before I started the new install, Windows

OS went on to the same drive as Windows and this is what I want -
operating systems on one drive each in its own partition and the
other drive for storing data and so on. This is how it was before I
started the new install, Windows XP Pro and Xubuntu 12.04 on the 500
GB drive.

This doesn't sound like such a crazy default, either way the installer
does tell you what it intends to do with partitions and the like
before it writes to them.

I realise that I have lost some data but most of it was backed up so
that can be recovered but, how do I reinstall Xubuntu 13.04 so that
it is on the 500GB drive and the two operating systems and their
application in separate partitions?

You can re-run the installer and this time, at the partitioning stage,
instruct it to do that. More technically involvedly, you could rejig
the partitions on the 500G and copy the Linux partition over, then
repair Grub. The latter would preserve the current state of the
install.

Avi, you are correct in what you say about the partitioning at the
install stage, however, on reflection, there was no partitioning choice
offered. I think I chose the first offer which was to install alongside
Windows 7. The installer did not do this and I am now wondering if this
is a bug or have I missed something?

Are they conventional usb keyboard and mouse?

Yes - I have tried both wired and wireless.

When you say intermittent do you mean they come and go while you are
using the PC or do they work for a while then stop and you have to
reboot or unplug and replug the device, or something, to get them
back, or some other sort of indeterminacy?

They come and go whilst using the PC.

Do they work/fail together?

Yes both the keyboard and the mouse buttons fail at the same time.

Yes - I have tried both wired and wireless.

I wonder whether it is that the system is becoming unresponsive as
something is clogging up the machine, rather than a problem with the
mouse and keyboard. Does it happen when you are doing anything in
particular? Viewing online videos for example?

I had thought of that but the problem starts as soon as booting has
finished and no particular application running.

Does the disk activity light flash continuously while the problem exists?

Yes there are very slight flashes all the time with an occasional large
flare. This activity also shows when running XP Pro.

Open System Monitor and go to the Resources tab and leave that running
and visible if possible, at least so that you can see the CPU and
Memory sections. When it goes unresponsive do you see the CPU(s)
going to 100%? Also what are the values for Memory and Swap when it
is unresponsive.

I will see if I can find a way to do this allowing for the lack of
response to the mouse buttons.

[ubuntu-uk] off topic (apologies)

I have never used this list before for a subject which is not related to
Ubuntu but I cannot think where else to go. I would like to hear from
any one who gets their broadband supplied by wireless (radio). My supply
is by wireless because there is no reasonable supply any other way and I

3. What is the make and model of your router

Router is ZyXEL NBG 417N and was supplied by the broadband supplier.

I can guess how the service is presented and I think that you're going to
be limited by upstream options so you might have to use alternative
solutions that don't need port forwarding, and if it's about remote access,
consider Teamview.

I am considering Teamview but I presume this will not allow one to play

If you are sharing a wifi link then it is the wifi base station that

According to 'whatismyipaddress' the ISP is Virgin Media and the

Re: [ubuntu-uk] off topic (apologies)

2012-10-08 Thread Norman Silverstone

I know we had this communication before privately, but it looks like your
ISP is Virgin insofar as that is the gateway for your wireless service.
According to the company's website (walesbroadband.com) it's WiMAX, which
is no bad thing as it does provide a decent service but with their
architecture there probably isn't the facility for port forwarding as your
router almost certainly has an unrouted IP address and they can't or won't
route ports from the Internet gateway to your router.

That is true.

You might be able to set something up using LogMeIn.com or a similar
service but depending on how their system is set up there's not necessarily
any guarantee of that.

Thanks, I'll have a look at that.

Broadly speaking, if he needs ssh access you will probably need to forward
a port on the router to your computer. By default this is port 22, and
there will probably be a preset for it. However, you might want to consider
additional security by opening a different port, which reduces the
incidence of port scanning. Check with your son first.

This seemed to be quite straightforward but, like so many things I try
to do, I am stuck. Is there some magic involved in making port
forwarding work? I followed the instruction in the router's manual, I
read and tried things I found in Google but, as far as I could tell, the
port did not open. Perhaps some kind person could point me to where I
might find the answer to my dilemma.

In the dialog you refer to, the first setting is Fonts for:. Each
message has a label on it, which you don't normally see, which specifies
the way in which the contents are to be interpreted. The likelihood is
that almost all of the messages you receive will be encoded by the
sender using Western, or possibly Central European. You can have
different sized fonts for different encodings, so the chances are that
when you see a message which you can't change the font size, it means
that message is encoded with a setting other than the one you are trying
to change the size of. You didn't mention whether that is something
which you have already tried, but have a look at the headers using
ViewHeadersAll and look for the Content type setting. That should
tell you how the sender has encoded the message, and give a clue as to
what you need to do to make sure that you know what encoding of font to
change in the advanced settings.

Try settings Fonts for to Western and see if that makes any difference.

I see from your settings that you have outging mail set to US ASCII. I
have mine set to Unicode (UTF-8), which is the standard encoding in
Ubuntu, and backwards compatible with US ASCII. If you send email to
Windows users which contains foreign language characters, they may not
see them correctly if their email client doesn't read the headers and
display UTF-8 correctly, but if you don't write emails in a foreign
language, that won't affect you or them using UTF-8. You can also set
incoming mail to Unicode (UTF-8), and if you do see character errors in
an incoming email, you can correct that by selecting Viewcharacter
encodingwestern (or whatever it says in their headers they have
encoded it with).

Try unchecking Allow messages to use other fonts.

Check use fixed width fonts for plain text messages, and after you
have done that, the setting which affects font size in messages should
be the one labelled Monospace.

Worst case is you should be able to change the font size (if it needs to
be bigger) with the Minimum font size setting.

That's about all I can think of for now. I am a little surprised that
Ubuntu didn't set up UTF-8 in Thunderbird (which was the case last time
I did a fresh install, which was a while ago as the profile I'm using
now originated in Thunderbird 2).

Thank you very much for this very clear explanation, things are now
dropping into place. I found that the only really effective way to alter
the font size was by altering the Minimum font size setting. I seem to
remember reading in one of the leads from Google that there is an issue
with UTF-8 in the current version of Thunderbird. Thanks again.

Right. I'm a kid of only 70, so very able minded (I think not). OK.

snip

In the install dialogues, choose the 'Something else' option, and tell
Ubuntu to install to the newly created ext4 partition. Make sure you
tell it to put the bootloader on the drive you are currently booting
from. This is one place you need to be careful as this is where grub
will be installed and updated. If you put it on the wrong drive, you
will need to boot into that drive! So far so good. You may get a
warning about installing to a partition and not a drive but if you
have got it right, it should be workable. The hold your breath and see
if you can boot after the installation has completed.

Please don't shout at me if anything messes up. This is not an easy
process, but I have done it two or three times before I started using a
dedicated drive for Windows and one for Ubuntu (with an extra one for
Ubuntu testing). The latter arrangement is far far easier for me to
 maintain.

I can understand and follow all that you say and, viewed theoretically,
it is very good. Where I am at a complete loss is how to practically
modify the partition containing Windows. I suppose I should read up on
gparted before going any further.

gparted is easy! Fire it up and browse to the NTFS partition you want
to resize, and select it. Click on the 'partition' menu and there is an
option to 'resize/move'. The rest is easy, and I can honestly say it
hasn't let me down once but then I've never had a power failure or
a computer hardware problem during the re-sizing - which takes quite a
while! Occasionally, my wife manages to trip one or more mcb's when she
is getting stuff out of the pantry there's no way around that.

Right, that seems straight forward. I'll have some tea and then have a
go. I have no data to loose so if things mess up it wont matter.

Barry, using gparted, the HDD containing Windows XP Pro was partitioned
as you described and all seemed well. The installation process was
started and do something else selected. The partition allocated ext4 was
chosen and then I was warned that I needed to indicate a boot partition
so I chose this partition. The installation completed but, on reboot, it
went straight into Windows. I have confirmed that the two OSs are on the
same drive so I assume I need to do something about Grub. Still,
progress is being made.

[ubuntu-uk] dual boot problem

2012-05-12 Thread Norman Silverstone
I have a new PC with two HDDs and I am trying to install Windows and
Ubuntu on one of the drives keeping the other for data and so on. In the
past I have dual booted many machines without any difficulty but this is
the first time I have tried with a machine with 2 drives and there are
problems. Installing XP Pro puts the OS on the main drive as expected
but Ubuntu wants to install on the second drive and not along side
windows. This shows in the installation process when the point is
reached where a decision has to be made on the installation when install
along side is selected. The next step then involves setting the
partition and it is here that the installer thinks that windows is on
the second drive and not on the first drive.

If this is ignored and the installation allowed to proceed then I end up
with XP Pro on one drive and Ubuntu on the other and this is what I do
not want. I suppose the problem could be solved by opening up the
machine and disconnecting the second drive before trying to install
Ubuntu but this seems rather like taking a sledge hammer to crack a nut
as well as possibly negating the guarantee.

I have researched but have failed to find a solution and I would be so
pleased if someone could solve the problem. Thank you in advance.

You need to Do soemthing else. From there it should tell you what
you have on each drive, so should clearly show where Windows is. If
you only have one partition on that drive and Windows is taking up the
whole drive, you can select to partition the drive, which I think uses
 GParted to do it.

Andy, all I know is that if there is one drive and the installer is
instructed to install along side Windows, then the installer partitions
the drive accordingly and gets on with the installation. So, are you
suggesting that, because there are two drives one of which is empty, the
installer decides to install on the empty one rather than partition and
install on the one with Windows? I have heard of Artificial intelligence
but surely this is not correct.

If you Google 'Ubuntu Asus P8H61-M' you will get some useful results,
the first being that it's an EFI board so it will probably only work
with a 64 bit distribution although it doesn't seem very promising
from that post. Asus themselves have passed it for Ubuntu 10.10.

Surely the running of 64 bit distributions is a function of the CPU not

Well at least that is nice and simple. If you boot into the installer
and go into Something Else then you should see
 /dev/sda
 /dev/sda1
/dev/sda2 (it might be a different number)
where sda2 has type Swap and sda1 is ext3 or ext4. It does not matter which.
sda1 should show a size of 140GB or thereabouts with 85GB used. You
first need to shrink this to make room for 12.04.
First though make sure you have backed up everything important just in case.

Click on sda1 and click Change. It will show the partition size as
14 (MB) or thereabouts. Reduce this by about 1 to allow 10GB
for 12.04. So if it were 14 change it to 13. MOST
IMPORTANTLY leave Use As set to do not use, and do NOT select Format.
Click OK which will show a warning about writing it to disk and that
you will not be able to undo it. Click Continue.

Go and have a cup of coffee while it shrinks the partition.

When it is finished you should a new entry marked as Free Space or
1MB. Select this one and click Add.
Set the Mount Point to /, leave the rest at default and click OK

It should now show the new partition as type ext4, mount point / and
 Format ticked.
DOUBLE CHECK that the other partitions have nothing under Mount Point
and are NOT ticked for formatting.
Offer a quick prayer or sacrifice to any Deity you consider relevant
 and click Install Now.

Thanks, Colin that looks pretty straight forward. Just one question,
where you say Set the Mount Point to /, is the ',' necessary or just
punctuation?

most time consuming part of the process is the downloading and

hours. Perhaps, with super fast broadband and a super computer, neither
of which I have, this time would be considerably reduced but, where I
live, broadband is a joke. Eventually I settled down to do some tests
and very soon encountered difficulties because I did not really
understand how to carry out the required test. I am not thick but when I
am asked, for example, to start gedit or nautilus using a set up with
which I am not familiar I was lost and gave up. Maybe this testing is
only for the Ubuntu literate and not for a simple user like me.

I will have another look when I have recovered my equilibrium but I
don't hold out much hope of being any use to the developers.

Settings are all as they should be. The only connection this computer
has with Ubuntu 11.10 is that I have downloaded and stored Ubuntu 11.10
and made an install CD for use on another machine.

Do you see anything odd if you do
 sudo apt-get update

This is then followed by a lot of stuff all referring to natty. Does
this help?

Panic over, thanks. I looked more carefully at the settings and, lo and
behold, there was an entry for Ubuntu 11.10 CDROM and it was ticked.
Some Gremlin must have been busy behind my back.

[ubuntu-uk] upgrade to 11.10

2011-11-08 Thread Norman Silverstone
I am using 11.04 with, what I assume to be, the original Gnome desktop.
My computer is not particularly sophisticated being about 5 years old
and I would like to know whether I am likely to encounter a whole lot of
new problems to solve should I decide to upgrade. I have tried to follow
comments made by list members and am rather confused and elderly. I have
been using Ubuntu since the first release and any real help would be
much appreciated.

Yes - try 11.10 from the live-CD. If you like it, install it. If you
prefer the Gnome desktop, consider using XUbuntu. On an older box, it
might suit you better. Again, run it from the live-CD until you are
sure it's what you want. If the live-CD does everything you want, Ok.
If not, you'll know what the problems are without sabotaging your
 existing install.

Never thought of that, thank you.

Sarah Is this the right camera? If so, GIMP + UFRaw / gimp-ufraw

There are a few RAW converters available for Ubuntu and I would suggest
that Photivo is well worth more than a look at.

[ubuntu-uk] boot time

Is it my imagination or does 11.04 take considerably longer to cold boot

But you have been specifically answered told how to install
Unity-2D! What do you want, someone to come and do it for you?

Now, now, don't get your knickers in a twist.

More generally: what spec of computer do you have? What is the make,
model memory capacity of its graphics adaptor? Do you have drivers
 installed for the graphics adaptor?

I presume you mean well but I do not really understand what or why you
are asking and I am not really sure if I care.

Calm down, everybody... it really is not worth it.

I agree, I am just a cantankerous old man of 83 years who has been using
Ubuntu since the first day it was released. In fact, I took part in some
of the early valuations and validations.

Norman This is, I'm afraid, a hardy perennial: every new release of
Ubuntu breaks the solutions that 'Favux' and others have engineered to
 get Wacom tablets working.

I'm sorry to say that I had to give up on this endless cycle when I
started a serious photography course (for which I now use an Intuos 4
with an iMac and the various industry standard post-processing software).

I can only suggest the usual approach: trawl through the recent stuff on

 http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=967147

which I notice started in November 2008 (!). I see that Favux - God
bless him; that man deserves a medal - is still toiling to repair
Ubuntu's Wacom software, this time after the breakages caused by the
 11.04 upgrade.

He's a great bloke, and will reply to your posts on that thread most
helpfully. But do read and apply the relevant advice on the thread first.

 Best wishes, as always.

Thanks for your response which I will follow up and I suppose any really
serious user of a Wacom is not likely to be running Linux.

[ubuntu-uk] wacom bamboo MTE450

2011-06-30 Thread Norman Silverstone
I have recently installed Ubuntu 11.04 and I am unable to get the
buttons on the pad to respond when I am using GIMP. The pen and its
buttons are OK. Prior to installing 11.04 I was using 9.10 and the
buttons on the pad worked. The procedure I use is to run the following
script before running GIMP:-

#!/bin/bash

# If you set XSW in your environment it will override the
# script's default of /usr/bin/xsetwacom.
# If you set PAD and/or STYLUS then those override the script's
# defaults of 'Wacom Bamboo pad' and 'Wacom Bamboo' which are
# known correct for Ubuntu 9.04

# --8--[ Do not change this bit: ]---

test x$XSW = x XSW=/usr/bin/xsetwacom
test -x $XSW || { echo Cannot find xsetwacom in /usr/bin; exit 1; }

test x$PAD = x PAD=Wacom Bamboo pad
test x$STYLUS = x STYLUS=Wacom Bamboo

pad () {
  $XSW set $PAD $@
}

stylus () {
  $XSW set $STYLUS $@
}

# --8--[ Configurability from here down. ]---

# Define the Bamboo buttons
#
pad AbsWDn CORE KEY + # circle zoom out
pad AbsWUp CORE KEY - # circle zoom in
pad Button1 CORE KEY CTRL /z # key 1 () undo
pad Button2 CORE KEY CTRL# key 2 (FN1) CTRL
pad Button3 CORE KEY SHIFT CTRL /e# key 3 () fill frame
pad Button4 CORE KEY SHIFT # key 4 (FN2) SHIFT

stylus TPCButton off # side switch mode
stylus mode Absolute # positioning mode
stylus Button1 Button 1 # pentip click left
stylus Button2 Core Key x # Lower side switch Fg/Bg - Bg/Fg
stylus Button3 Button 2 # Upper side switch click middle

Could someone please suggest what I might need to change or point me to
where I might find the answer to the difficulty.

Thanks

Norman
