[ubuntu-uk] Evolution
My wife has used Evolution for several years with very few problems however, recently, she has reported a rather unusual fault and I am supposed to put it right. Sometimes, a message which is listed will not show the body of that message, who it's to and who it's from are there but no message. If reply is selected the message appears in the reply window and if print is selected the message is printed. Thus, we know the message is available but it will not display. To make things worse, this problem is not tied to any particular sender and seems to be intermittent. I would be most grateful for suggestions on how to troubleshoot this problem as I know very little about Evolution. Furthermore, I have no idea what my wife may have done out of the ordinary when using her computer and neither does she. Thank you all for responding to my request and, from what I have read, it seems that this machine will not run any reasonably current OS. I have also unearthed a lot of old games which probably ran on DOS from 3.5in floppies. I wonder if I can find an old DOs disk, that would be fun and nothing to do with Ubuntu. big snip You have missed something. When it says install alongside Windows, that does not say or mean or imply anything about *where* on which disk it's going to go. Windows can't read Linux filesystems. I ran sudo parted -l and two drives were shown, /dev/sda 500GB and /dev/sdb 250GB. In the past, when I have installed Ubuntu I was offered the choice to set up partitions but this time I was not. Could this mean that Xbuntu is now installed on the 250GB drive which is not showing on the desktop. If that is the case then a lot of data which was stored could have been lost as the smaller drive was used just for that. Does it happen when you are doing anything in particular? Viewing online videos for example? I had thought of that but the problem starts as soon as booting has finished and no particular application running. Does the disk activity light flash continuously while the problem exists? Yes there are very slight flashes all the time with an occasional large flare. This activity also shows when running XP Pro. Open System Monitor and go to the Resources tab and leave that running and visible if possible, at least so that you can see the CPU and Memory sections. When it goes unresponsive do you see the CPU(s) going to 100%? Also what are the values for Memory and Swap when it is unresponsive. My supply is by wireless because there is no reasonable supply any other way and I am unable to open ports on my router by port forwarding. What I am anxious to know is whether this is due to the method of supply or something else. Please, can any one help as the broadband supplier seems unable to do so? Re: [ubuntu-uk] off topic (apologies)
snip 1. Who is the ISP? See reply to Colin 2. What sort of service is it - eg is it 3G, or actual wifi (I suspect 3G) Definitely not wifi. 3. What is the make and model of your router Router is ZyXEL NBG 417N and was supplied by the broadband supplier. I can guess how the service is presented and I think that you're going to be limited by upstream options so you might have to use alternative solutions that don't need port forwarding, and if it's about remote access, consider Teamview. I am considering Teamview but I presume this will not allow one to play games. Norman -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/
Re: [ubuntu-uk] off topic (apologies)
snip When you say it is by wireless do you mean that you are effectively sharing a wifi link with others, or is more sophisticated than that? If you are sharing a wifi link then it is the wifi base station that would have to have the port opened to your machine. There is an antenna fixed to my house which I am told receives a wireless signal. If it is not shared wifi then can you give us more details of how it works? Who is the supplier? According to 'whatismyipaddress' the ISP is Virgin Media and the Organization is Telecoms Facilities Limited who fixed the installation and to whom I pay a monthly fee. They may be alternatives to achieve what you want to without opening ports. What do you need the ports opened for? I want to open ports for remote access and to play games with my friends particularly Bridge Baron. snip You're going to have to find out what kind of network you have and a bit more info in general before anyone can advise. It is Wifi, 3G, WiMAX or what? Study your bill and your contract, for starters. I believe it is WiMAX Secondly, do you have admin access to your router? Yes. Re: [ubuntu-uk] off topic (apologies)
I know we had this communication before privately, but it looks like your ISP is Virgin insofar as that is the gateway for your wireless service. According to the company's website (walesbroadband.com) it's WiMAX, which is no bad thing as it does provide a decent service but with their architecture there probably isn't the facility for port forwarding as your router almost certainly has an unrouted IP address and they can't or won't route ports from the Internet gateway to your router. That is true. You might be able to set something up using LogMeIn.com or a similar service but depending on how their system is set up there's not necessarily any guarantee of that. Thanks, I'll have a look at that. Norman -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/

Thanks in advance Broadly speaking, if he needs ssh access you will probably need to forward a port on the router to your computer. By default this is port 22, and there will probably be a preset for it. However, you might want to consider additional security by opening a different port, which reduces the incidence of port scanning. Check with your son first. This seemed to be quite straightforward but, like so many things I try to do, I am stuck. Is there some magic involved in making port forwarding work? I followed the instruction in the router's manual, I read and tried things I found in Google but, as far as I could tell, the port did not open. Thanks In the dialog you refer to, the first setting is Fonts for:. Each message has a label on it, which you don't normally see, which specifies the way in which the contents are to be interpreted. The likelihood is that almost all of the messages you receive will be encoded by the sender using Western, or possibly Central European. You can have different sized fonts for different encodings, so the chances are that when you see a message which you can't change the font size, it means that message is encoded with a setting other than the one you are trying to change the size of. You didn't mention whether that is something which you have already tried, but have a look at the headers using ViewHeadersAll and look for the Content type setting. That should tell you how the sender has encoded the message, and give a clue as to what you need to do to make sure that you know what encoding of font to change in the advanced settings. Try settings Fonts for to Western and see if that makes any difference. I see from your settings that you have outging mail set to US ASCII. I have mine set to Unicode (UTF-8), which is the standard encoding in Ubuntu, and backwards compatible with US ASCII. If you send email to Windows users which contains foreign language characters, they may not see them correctly if their email client doesn't read the headers and display UTF-8 correctly, but if you don't write emails in a foreign language, that won't affect you or them using UTF-8. You can also set incoming mail to Unicode (UTF-8), and if you do see character errors in an incoming email, you can correct that by selecting Viewcharacter encodingwestern (or whatever it says in their headers they have encoded it with). Try unchecking Allow messages to use other fonts. Check use fixed width fonts for plain text messages, and after you have done that, the setting which affects font size in messages should be the one labelled Monospace. Worst case is you should be able to change the font size (if it needs to be bigger) with the Minimum font size setting. That's about all I can think of for now. I am a little surprised that Ubuntu didn't set up UTF-8 in Thunderbird (which was the case last time I did a fresh install, which was a while ago as the profile I'm using now originated in Thunderbird 2). Thank you very much for this very clear explanation, things are now dropping into place. I found that the only really effective way to alter the font size was by altering the Minimum font size setting. I seem to remember reading in one of the leads from Google that there is an issue with UTF-8 in the current version of Thunderbird. Thanks again. OK. snip In the install dialogues, choose the 'Something else' option, and tell Ubuntu to install to the newly created ext4 partition. Make sure you tell it to put the bootloader on the drive you are currently booting from. This is one place you need to be careful as this is where grub will be installed and updated. If you put it on the wrong drive, you will need to boot into that drive! So far so good. You may get a warning about installing to a partition and not a drive but if you have got it right, it should be workable. The hold your breath and see if you can boot after the installation has completed. Please don't shout at me if anything messes up. This is not an easy process, but I have done it two or three times before I started using a dedicated drive for Windows and one for Ubuntu (with an extra one for Ubuntu testing). Click on the 'partition' menu and there is an option to 'resize/move'. The rest is easy, and I can honestly say it hasn't let me down once but then I've never had a power failure or a computer hardware problem during the re-sizing - which takes quite a while! Occasionally, my wife manages to trip one or more mcb's when she is getting stuff out of the pantry there's no way around that. Right, that seems straight forward. The partition allocated ext4 was chosen and then I was warned that I needed to indicate a boot partition so I chose this partition. The installation completed but, on reboot, it went straight into Windows. I have confirmed that the two OSs are on the same drive so I assume I need to do something about Grub. [ubuntu-uk] dual boot problem
I have a new PC with two HDDs and I am trying to install Windows and Ubuntu on one of the drives keeping the other for data and so on. In the past I have dual booted many machines without any difficulty but this is the first time I have tried with a machine with 2 drives and there are problems. Installing XP Pro puts the OS on the main drive as expected but Ubuntu wants to install on the second drive and not along side windows. This shows in the installation process when the point is reached where a decision has to be made on the installation when install along side is selected. The next step then involves setting the partition and it is here that the installer thinks that windows is on the second drive and not on the first drive. If this is ignored and the installation allowed to proceed then I end up with XP Pro on one drive and Ubuntu on the other and this is what I do not want. I suppose the problem could be solved by opening up the machine and disconnecting the second drive before trying to install Ubuntu but this seems rather like taking a sledge hammer to crack a nut as well as possibly negating the guarantee. I have researched but have failed to find a solution and I would be so pleased if someone could solve the problem. Thank you in advance. The computer I am writing this on now is one I built myself using a Gigabyte P67-DS3-B3 and it works absolutely fine, with no issues at all. I is usually less the manufacturer but the chipset and processor and integrated (or external) graphics used that determine the compatibility. If you are able to get the part code or model of the motherboard it may be easier for us to give you a definitive answer. The motherboard is GA-H61MA-D3V. I hope this helps. Re: [ubuntu-uk] Unity testing
snip That's a shame. I'd be interested in knowing exactly which test it was and we can fix the text description pretty easily for future tests. For example I am asked to run gedit. No problem, I go to Applications, Accessories and select Text Editor. Problem, there is no heading Applications. I could of course select a terminal and type gedit and press enter - problem where do I find a terminal. I move on and I am asked to run nautilus. As far as I am concerned nautilus is or was a submarine. Checkbox does have the option to skip this test which enables you to move onto a test which you understand or can perform. When I first saw the email about testing I thought it was a great idea. At my age time is not a problem and so I could start to learn about the latest version of Ubuntu and, at the same time, return something to help the developers. My fear now is that if I continue with more tests I may produce misleading data causing the developers more hindrance than help. In a terminal Ctrl+Shift+C copies to the paste buffer. none 1024860 0 1024860 0% /lib/init/rw Well at least that is nice and simple. If you boot into the installer and go into Something Else then you should see /dev/sda /dev/sda1 /dev/sda2 (it might be a different number) where sda2 has type Swap and sda1 is ext3 or ext4. It does not matter which. sda1 should show a size of 140GB or thereabouts with 85GB used. You first need to shrink this to make room for 12.04. First though make sure you have backed up everything important just in case. Click on sda1 and click Change. It will show the partition size as 14 (MB) or thereabouts. Reduce this by about 1 to allow 10GB for 12.04. So if it were 14 change it to 13. MOST IMPORTANTLY leave Use As set to do not use, and do NOT select Format. Click OK which will show a warning about writing it to disk and that you will not be able to undo it. Click Continue. Go and have a cup of coffee while it shrinks the partition. When it is finished you should a new entry marked as Free Space or 1MB. Select this one and click Add. Set the Mount Point to /, leave the rest at default and click OK It should now show the new partition as type ext4, mount point / and Format ticked. DOUBLE CHECK that the other partitions have nothing under Mount Point and are NOT ticked for formatting. Offer a quick prayer or sacrifice to any Deity you consider relevant and click Install Now. Thanks, Colin that looks pretty straight forward. Just one question, where you say Set the Mount Point to /, is the ',' necessary or just punctuation? Re: [ubuntu-uk] Unity testing
snip I would like to make a couple of comments relating to my experience. The most time consuming part of the process is the downloading and installation of the system. I suppose, overall this took well over 2 hours. Perhaps, with super fast broadband and a super computer, neither of which I have, this time would be considerably reduced but, where I live, broadband is a joke. Eventually I settled down to do some tests and very soon encountered difficulties because I did not really understand how to carry out the required test. I am not thick but when I am asked, for example, to start gedit or nautilus using a set up with which I am not familiar I was lost and gave up. Maybe this testing is only for the Ubuntu literate and not for a simple user like me. I will have another look when I have recovered my equilibrium but I don't hold out much hope of being any use to the developers. snip I think we all ought to shout at the gimp folk. Gimp is an incredibly capable program, and it is also the least intuitive and least workable that I have ever seen! If the Gimp folk wanted to sell it for cash, there would be no chance! It seems to me that FOSS developers never talk to potential (non-geek) users. It's high time ordinary folk like us (folk who use and don't develop) got ourselves a voice. Once upon a time ordinary folk did have a voice which was welcomed. I know because I was one of them. I was one of the first non-technical users of Ubuntu and was used as a bit of a guinea-pig by one of my sons who worked for Canonical. It was all very new to me and I found and filed bugs. But, as Canonical became more complex and diverse, so the sort of help which users like me could give appeared to be of less and less use to developers. This is not the place to have a rant so I'll go and play patience. Norman -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/

It's mostly just following some prepared instructions and reporting when it breaks :) I would like to have a go but need a little helpful advice, please. I have Ubuntu 11.04 on my desktop computer and wondered if there is a simple way to install the version of Ubuntu to be tested along side the version I use.
