2017-02-12 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Artem (enorone), it will help immensely if you filed a new report with Ubuntu
by ensuring you have the package xdiagnose installed, and that you click the
Yes button for attaching additional debugging information running the following
from a terminal:
ubuntu-bug xorg

Also, please feel free to subscribe me to it.

For more on why this is helpful, please see

Exactly the same issue on Asus N550JV laptop (hybrid graphics: Intel HD
4600/nVIDIA GT 750M), fresh install of 14.04, nvidia-331. Random lockups
when using nVIDIA card, no lockups at all when using Intel. Lockups
happen more often when nVIDIA card is under load (for example, playing

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1184451] Re: Ubuntu 13.10 random screen freeze while Normal OS activites

2014-07-28 Thread SammyA
This bug was affecting me under these specific circumstances:

Ubuntu 13.10 - all updates applied
Hardware: HP Elitebook 8440p (Video is NVIDIA NVS 3100M graphics)
Problem seemed more prevalent when laptop was under load and was getting hot,
almost like a CPU thermal shutdown issue..

This problem has stabalised for me since upgrading to 14.04, and have
not had an issue since..

Regardless of new report policy for this site... I'm not sure if the
mods here are aware, but this page is top hit in Google search for this
problem, this is why everyone is posting here...

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1184451] Re: Ubuntu 13.10 random screen freeze while Normal OS activites

2014-03-28 Thread TazX
I have the Gigabyte U24-ti5. I may be wrong, but it seems to happen a
lot less when I'm using the mouse (which seems to automatically disable
the touchpad. Possibly touchpad related? Anybody else have an Elantech
Touchpad?

I must admit to not being keen to test Trusty while it's still in alpha.
I'd have to downgrade my kernel first as well, I'm pretty sure?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1184451] Re: Ubuntu 13.10 random screen freeze while Normal OS activites

2014-03-26 Thread TazX
Hi Christopher,

I've run into this bug too, and reported it as you requested. I am running
Ubuntu 13.10, Kernal 3.12.0-031200rc7-generic #201310271935
SMP Sun Oct 27 23:37:06 UTC 2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I upgraded the kernal as it seemed like the best way to get nvidia-prime
to run. I noticed that there are other people here running this kind of
set up (and some not) so I thought I'd mention it. I had trouble with
Bumblebee, so gave up and switched to Prime. One or the other is
necessary because the Intel chip is the one that talks to the screen, so
I need them to play nicely.

In case it helps... I'm too lazy to submit a new bug report, sorry...

Synopsis: For me it seems to have been the nvidia-319 driver. No hangs
since changing to nvidia-331 (over a week now).

Symptoms: X hangs, reporting 100% CPU utilization. System is
responsive, can ssh in for diagnostics.

Diagnostic Summary: Profiled system, Xorg seems to get stuck in the

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1184451] Re: Ubuntu 13.10 random screen freeze while Normal OS activites

2014-03-06 Thread William Geiger
If it is of any help I have been having this same problem ever since the
the 3.8.0 kernel came out. When I first starting having this problem I
was running 64 bit Xubuntu 3.04 with the nouveau drivers. I just figured
that it was a problem on my system. So long as I booted using the
3.5.0-28 kernel I would never get freezes. I just did a fresh install of
Xubuntu 3.10 64-bit on a new HD and I could not get the system to run
more than an hour (often less) without a freeze requiring a hard reboot.
I installed the nVidia 304.88 driver (nVidia current) last night and I
have not hand any freezes yet (fingers crossed).

2014-02-13 Thread Krzysztof Janowicz
Same problem here and on 3 other laptops in my lab (2x thinkpad and 1x
macbook air).

My Macbook Pro 11.3 has Kernel 3.13. When the screen freezes, sound
(e.g., skype) still works and I can move the mouse but not click.

I 'solve' this by going to the terminal and restarting lightdm:

'sudo service lightdm restart'

but of course this is still not a real solution.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1184451] Re: Ubuntu 13.10 random screen freeze while Normal OS activites

2014-02-08 Thread Ján Halaša
I use to experience similar problems - CPU usage goes to max (kernel code) and
sometimes it ends after a while, sometimes I have to reboot the computer. It
usually happens when the following programs are running:
- Google Chrome (probable because of flash player)
- Canon Digital Photo Professional in wine
- xfreerdp
If they run at the same time, the risk of problems is quite high.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1184451] Re: Ubuntu 13.10 random screen freeze while Normal OS activites

2014-01-11 Thread Hannes Erven
I have performed the requested update to a daily build of 14.04 (ubuntu-
gnome) on Wednesday and so far I have used my system for full three days
without a single freeze.

I have nevertheless created Bug#1268187 with the ubuntu-bug output of my
system. Apparently, Petr and I both have CLEVO systems, so maybe
hardware does play some role here.

2014-01-11 Thread Petr
I tried the 14.04 system on a virtual machine for a day - and did not have any
freezes. Will try later 13.10 on a virtual machine and if I can reproduce a
freeze there, then that will be a proof.
On my real machine I stopped using Chrome and for a few days now have not had
any freezes.

I found that when I switched to GNOME my mouse worked but without a cursor,
I was able to overcome that problem with some instructions I found on the

the version spoofer extension I had to loaded for the Linus Silverlight
applet I use for Netflix to work.

Christopher,

Assuming the issues I am seeing on my system, then it's most definately
current (having just had a freeze - which reminded me to check the bug
website!).

I concur that the freeze seems to occur more often when using
workspaces, though I have proved that I still get the occassional freeze
even when workspaces are disabled.

My laptop has 32 GB RAM. It froze and when I decided to switch it off
and held the power button for 1 sec, it magically unforze. htop was
opened at the time and showed that chrome consumed all of 32 GB of
memory. When I killed it, the memory came down to 400 Mb. I think this
is a Chrome bug. I am using Firefox for now and will see whether it

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1184451] Re: Ubuntu 13.10 random screen freeze while Normal OS activites

2014-01-07 Thread Hannes Erven
For me this is still an issue (on the stable 13.10), but (un)fortunately
I have no idea how to reproduce it or what factors (do not) contribute
to it.

So far, I seem to have found:
- the version of nvidia-drivers or the use of nouveau is irrelevant
- in Gnome, I have the impression that a freeze is much more likely when using
multiple workspaces
- it seems to happen very much less frequently when using Unity than with Gnome
sessions (but I probably don't use the workspaces in Unity as much as in Gnome)

Currently, I experience a freeze in Gnome-Shell within 1-3 hours after
startup/reboot. I will happily grab the daily snapshot and see if it
still happens there and then upload the apport-collect data.

2014-01-06 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Naveen, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any
activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If
so, could you please test for this with the latest development release
of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com
/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in
the development release from a Terminal
(Applications-Accessories-Terminal), as it will automatically gather
and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p xorg-server REPLACE-WITH-BUG-NUMBER

Please note, given that the information from the prior release is
already available, doing this on a release prior to the development one
would not be helpful.

Thank you for your understanding.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1184451] Re: Ubuntu 13.10 random screen freeze while Normal OS activites

2013-12-31 Thread Colin Silvester
I think my system is suffering with the same (or similar) issue. The
symptom is that during normal use (Ubuntu 13.10) the system will lock
up. The mouse can still be moved but I can't click on any open
applications. The sound services will continue to operate (seemingly in
the background). Then I wait for about 10 to 20 seconds and the windows
will kind of go nuts (and that's a technical term!) flashing all the
windows up seemingly in a random order until it finally shows just the
wall paper (background) and then settles down with a crash report. At
that point, the system is either completely back to normal, or partially
OK (the missing aspect being the menu bars of all open applications - in
which case a re-boot is necessary).

The system is running a dual Intel CPUs (E2220 - 2.4GHz) with an Nvidia
GeForce 7100 graphics card. It's a 64-bit install with 4.7Gb RAM.

I have already installed the current nvidia drivers and tried to remove
nouveau but that seemed to have already been removed.

The crash report states:

ExecutablePath: /usr/bin/compiz
ProcCmdline: compiz
Title: compiz crashed with SIGSEGV

For me too. I'm using ubuntu 13.10 and the display freezes (mostly after
playing a lot of videos on chrome). I just can move the cursor but I
can't perform clicks or text input. Sometimes switching to the tty and
restart lightdm works but sometimes I have to restart my computer.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1184451] Re: Ubuntu 13.10 random screen freeze while Normal OS activites

2013-12-21 Thread Bill Turner, wb4alm
Like many others, I have been getting random screen freezes since July
2013.

They are more frequent under 13.10, but I was also getting them under
13.04

I have a quad processor, and it seems that if one cpu approaches 100%, I am
much more likely to see a screen freeze. Some of the freezes clear themselves
in a time fram of 15 seconds to a couple of minutes. If more than two of the
copu's go to 100% it is highly probably that a Hard reboot (with the power
switch) will be required.
(Could there be a kernal logic problem in signalling between the cpu's?)

When the unfreeze occurs, I will see a screen flash and then the
screen is rewritten and everything is fine for a while.

If the unfreeze does not occur within a few minutes, I have found that a
hard reboot with the power switch is necessary. Sometimes when the
screen freezes, the cursor can be moved, but button clicks will no
longer work, nor will the keyboard.

My keyboard and trackball are both USB if that makes a difference, and
my VIDEO card is a NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GTS using NVIDIA's 304.88 driver.

I have had multiple monitors attached to my system in the past using my
dual port card, but in the last 6 months have only had a ViewSonic
VA1930wm at 1440x900 pixels. (In fact, prior to ubuntu 10.04, I was able
to run them as separate x-screens, but that went away with Ubuntu 10.04)

As a radio Amateur, I frequently run a program called FLDIGI to control one of
my Radio Transmitters. When I had FLDIGI configured to use portaudio,
everything was fine from Ubuntu 8.04 all the way to Ubuntu 10.04.
With Ubuntu 10.04 I started to get some freezes using Portaudio and under
Ubuntu 12.10 it was totally unusable - so I switched to PulseAudio (as
recommended by the FLDIGI author), and as a result the freezes were less
frequent until Ubuntu 13.10, when the freezes became quite frequent.

I have no way to tell if the problen is X-server related, or if it is
pulseAudio related, or if it has to do with signaling within the kernal.

Sometimes when the system fixes itself, a problem analysis is created
and I assume is transmitted to Ubuntu support. I know for a fact that
NO report is generated when I have to hard boot the system.

If the screen freezes and can not be fixed, then I will have to abandon
Ubuntu and go to mint 13 or mint 14 like a lot of other Radio Amateurs
have already done.

It is just not acceptable when I am in the middle of a radio
conversation with other Radio Hams to have the Ubuntu system freeze and
cause my radio transmitter to suddenly stop sending data, but continue
to transmit a signal, and then go suddenly off the air when the system
is rebooted. Not only is it not polite to just disappear, it is a
violation of the FCC's rules and regulations to not end the transmission
with my call sign.

2013-12-16 Thread Kendeng
I got the same problem, I upgrade from 13.04 to 13.10. This bug issue.
Using Lenovo X230. And very annoying. The system hang. Nothing response.
And one thing is very strange, If I'm using a USB mouse. When I unplug
the USB mouse, and Plug it again. It seems no power supply to the
mouse(very strange, Lenove DOSE change a main board for me, But the same
thing happen, so I think this is not cause by the main board).

If some one freezing the keyboard and mouse, try to unplug your mouse,
and plug again, try to see if the red light under mouse can see.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1184451] Re: Ubuntu 13.10 random screen freeze while Normal OS activites

2013-12-05 Thread Jorge Candela
Just to share with everybody who is getting the same issue, I have
dropped freezes down to just one a day following Goalie Fight advice in
a href=https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-
server/+bug/1184451/comments/46#46/a.

I'm running a fresh 13.10 64bit install and the freezeing was happening
really often to me driving unusable my system.

It's important to point out that I finally did it from the command line,
like is adviced in #46.

However, before this, I had tried the same through the visual
configuration window for private controllers offered by ubuntu but with
no change at all. I don't know why, but it's not the same installing
controllers through the visual configuration or with apt.

In fact apt asked me to remove other controllers which were supossed to
be already unistalled from the private controller manager. I'm not sure
if this could be relevant to the subject but I was not expecting
something like that.

Since that change I can work again but I still have to reboot the system
once a day.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1184451] Re: Ubuntu 13.10 random screen freeze while Normal OS activites

2013-12-05 Thread Khai Dinh
I performed a fresh install of 13.10 64-bit on my Dell E6520, and was
running into this freeze issue at the login screen or even shortly after
logging in. Eventually, a terminal like screen would appear with
nouveau error messages. Much like comment #46 above, I was able to do
the following:

1) Opened Virtual Terminal, using ctrl+alt+F3
2) Logged in at the prompt
3) sudo apt-get install nvidia-319 (which is the latest version that I can see)

During the nvidia driver download and install, my display would switch
back to either the frozen login screen or the black screen with the
stream of nouveau errors. I would just hit ctrl+alt+F3 again to
continue watching the installation process. Once the install was
finished, I rebooted, using the command: sudo reboot. I did not remove
nouveau.

It's only been about 8 hours, but I haven't hit the freeze issue again
yet... fingers crossed.

I'm attaching the nouveau messages grep'd from my syslog, in case it
helps.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1184451] Re: Ubuntu 13.10 random screen freeze while Normal OS activites

2013-11-20 Thread Maarten Lankhorst
Seems to me multiple driver bugs could be causing this for different
reasons. Nouveau nv50 had issues under memory stress that are solved in
saucy-proposed.

See bug #1247607 for more info. There's a really nasty kernel bug for
nouveau that could cause problems too under memory stress for ALL
nouveau cards. This is fixed in drm-next:
http://cgit.freedesktop.org/~airlied/linux/commit/?h=drm-
nextid=9360bd1112d8874d21942e2ae74f5416b00a8db6

A precompiled drm-next kernel with the fix for nouveau can be found at
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/drm-next/current/ but
please grab lidbrm-nouveau2 from -proposed too.

2013-11-20 Thread Jorge Candela
I can confirm this happening to me too. Every now and again before
13.10, but very often since I did a fresh 13.10 install.

Everything freezes with no clear relation with user actions or opened
programs. Sometimes I can switch to console with ctrl+alt+f2 and restart
lightgdm but it just delay the freezing for a while because next time it
will completely freeze forcing me to perform a hard reset.

In adition, I have also noticed a very high rate of firefox breaks since
I upgrade to 13.10. I have always been running an updated system with no
extras out of the installed repos.

It is coming out so frecuently that it is driving the system unusable
for working purpouses. Just sometimes it can keeps running for a few
hours with no problem. The weird thing is that it occurs when I'm doing
the exact same work with the same programs than when it freezes.

2013-11-19 Thread Mikkel Kamstrup Erlandsen
I can second what I mentioned elsewhere: This is *not* related to
nouveau. Nor is it related to Compiz effects.

I get these symptoms maybe 10-20 per day: Screen freezes. Music/sound
continues to work. Can move mouse but not click. Keyboard unresponsive.
After maybe 10s the system comes back up.

The hangs are seemingly random. Maybe slightly more likely to happen
when system is under load. But can happen at any given time.

I tried under Xfce, Gnome, and Unity. All environments display the
symptom. And frankly, it's driving me nuts.

(My system is all Intel, with latest Ubuntu 13.10 packages)

2013-11-19 Thread EliCoten
I am using the radeon graphics drivers on x86 and I have found that
since upgrading from 13.04 the system seems to use less memory (as
reported by top) but Firefox suffers from the bug descriped herein.

It seems to be a bit worse when the system is under load, but in general
when multi-tasking other programs respond exactly as I would expect them
to (or perhaps even a bit quicker since 13.04) but Firefox very
frequently seems to hang for a few seconds. I would have assume that it
was the whole system locking up, but the mouse still moves, any
sound/music in the background still plays and if I switch to any other
window it responds fine. So I'll be using Chrome for now I guess...

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1184451] Re: Ubuntu 13.10 random screen freeze while Normal OS activites

2013-11-08 Thread Goalie Fight
I was also getting ramdon hard freezes in 13.10. I couldn't even switch
to the the consle to cleanly reboot. Had to do a hard kill.

I was abble to fix my problem by removing nouveau and installing the
Nvidia driver. You results may vary.

sudo apt-get install nvidia-current
sudo apt-get remote nouveau
sudo reboot

I'm running 64bit on a clean install if that matters at all. It was
never an issue on this machine in previous releases.

** Also affects: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau (Ubuntu)
   Importance: Undecided

2013-11-08 Thread Phr00t
@Goalie Fight,

That might be another problem... I've had nouveau blacklisted and
removed from the start (my machine couldn't even boot with nouveau
anywhere). I'm running nvidia-331 and still, very rarely, have the
problem.

I did just update to nvidia 331.20 today and haven't seen the problem
yet, but it happens so rarely, I doubt it has been fixed.

2013-11-08 Thread Goalie Fight
I could never go 10 minutes without having a lockup using nouveau. Maybe
it just happens less often with nvidia-current. Haven't seen any since I
changed the driver. Overall, I think this issue is related -- it just
happens more often in certain setups. Not sure what to say about the
people with Radeon though.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1184451] Re: Ubuntu 13.10 random screen freeze while Normal OS activites

2013-11-07 Thread Ufisch
Same here. I have recently installed 13.10 on two laptops (both different
types). It was a fresh installation, no upgrade.
I have this issue on both laptops. I cannot really say when it happens. It just
happens randomly.

Sometimes it just freezes, but I still can move the mouse. Sometimes it
starts with graphic errors (not showing parts of a program properly).
But I never can interact anymore. Neither with mouse click nor keybord.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1184451] Re: Ubuntu 13.10 random screen freeze while Normal OS activites

2013-11-07 Thread Panos Asimakopoulos
Has anybody noticed if that occurs right after using Nautilus for file
operations and then closing (or trying to close) the Nautilus window? In
one occasion I noticed Nautilus using about 2GB of memory right before
my screen freezing. Switching to a virtual console to kill Xorg is not
always possible, sometimes I have to hard reboot.

Ubuntu 13.10, clean install.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1184451] Re: Ubuntu 13.10 random screen freeze while Normal OS activites

2013-11-04 Thread James
It happened to me as well. I semi-maximize a LibreOffice program to the
left or right (holding the title bar to the left or right), then I
maximize the window holding the title bar towards the top of the screen.
The animation of fullscreen comes up, but the system freezes. The mouse
works, but no clicks do. Also, the cursor stays with the hand grabbing
icon.

This happened on a recently installed Ubuntu 13.10.

2013-11-02 Thread Phr00t
I have the same problem as described by many in this thread. Ubuntu-
studio v13.10, kernel 3.11.0-13-generic

MSI GE40, NVIDIA GeForce 760M, nvidia-319 nvidia-331 both cause
problems with nvidia-prime (muxless system)

GUI will completely lockup randomly infrequently... mouse/keyboard
doesn't visually update, but I think things continue to happen (just
doesn't update on the screen). Switching to a text terminal
(ctrl+alt+f2) FIXES the problem and things resume normally (until the
next lockup).

Hoping for a fix!

2013-10-24 Thread StSav012
In my case, both screen and keyboard freeze completely (even SysRq don't work).
Once I left my PC frozen for an hour, and no avail.
Once it happened while watching video. Sound was looped; some a half of a
second was being repeated. Then in several minutes it stopped.
I noticed the increasing of CPU load while freezing, for the cooler is rotating
much faster at the moments.
I'm using Ubuntu 13.10 after upgrading from 13.04. Previously, I haven't
noticed anything like this.

2013-10-24 Thread Letatcest
I don't use Firefox as my standard browser, so I didn't notice it myself. When
other people use my computer, they have to use firefox, as I don't want them to
use 'my' browser (chromium). It only seems to happen when Firefox is in use and
I've seen it happening. It's quite annoying. Screen freezes for ~30 sec or even
longer. Only sysreq-keystrokes still work. Cannot find anything in logs (or
maybe I haven't checked the right logs).
I am not entirely sure, but in all cases an instance of Libre Office had been
used as well, which is also something I never do (use gedit or google docs...).
But I haven't been able to recreate the problem. It seems completely random...

I can also confirm this problem. It happens to me in Unity on a
repeatable basis: whenever I click the mouse on the desktop to draw a
selection, everything freezes momentarily. It doesn't happen when
resizing or moving windows, just when I click on the desktop. However,
it does happen if I try to maximize a window in Unity

This happens in Gnome3 in other situations, especially in Eclipse.

I am using the nvidia-319 driver in the Ubuntu repo.

2013-10-20 Thread Ajit Natarajan
I started experiencing this hang after I upgraded from Kubuntu 13.04 to
13.10 yesterday (both 64 bit).

The freeze usually happens when I try to context switch between windows
running Firefox or between Firefox/Thunderbird windows. It also happens
when I close windows. The problem is not consistent (i.e., happening on
every switch/close) but happens fairly frequently. Ctl-Alt-F1/Ctl-
Alt-F7 does not always help.

Recovery takes several seconds.

A reboot does not fix the problem, i.e., hangs happen after reboots.

Follow up to comment 25.

Sometimes the hang happens even while browsing within a Firefox window.

I saw the following in dmesg around the time of the problems. I tried
Ctl-Alt-F1/Ctl-Alt-F7 and the graphics screen hung (black screen with
moveable mouse cursor). I do recall seeing the login screen for a
moment and the black screen right after I logged in again. I then
rebooted the system.

2013-10-19 Thread pirrax
Just installed Ubuntu 10.13 64-bit from ISO yesterday and cannot work
with it at all. It freezes already after 1-2 minute(s).

My Computer:
AMD Phenom II X6 1055 on MSI 870A-G54 mainboard
NVidia GTX 580
Ubuntu installed on Plextor 256 GB SSD

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1184451] Re: Ubuntu 13.10 random screen freeze while Normal OS activites

2013-10-17 Thread Randall
I just upgraded to 13.10 from 13.04 and experienced a frozen mouse
cursor after returning from standby. I could still click the mouse and
bring up a right-click dropdown menu; however, I could not move the
cursor. I had not ever experienced this issue under 13.04.

I hope you're able to pinpoint and resolve the issue.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1184451] Re: Ubuntu 13.10 random screen freeze while Normal OS activites

2013-09-21 Thread Pierre-Luc Gagnon
Update: I downgraded back to 13.04 and the problem vanished, thus
confirming that one of the upgraded packages is causing it. However, I
am still running the 3.11.0-7-generic kernel, so it's something else.

One way to uncover the culprit would be to update to 13.10 incrementally
just a few packages at a time and see which one brings back the freezes.
I don't have much time these next few days but if somebody could try it,
it would save all of us a lot of pain (really can't work like this). I
will have a go at it next week. I don't see any other solution unless
someone finally finds an error message in a log somewhere.
