Re: [UC] Nightmare on Spruce Street
My block went 'permit parking' when I lived on the 500 block of South 44th Street. The day the signs went up, somone from the PPA came and ticketed everyone on the block When I questioned them on some sort of grace period, the PPA officer simply shrugged. In a message dated 2/16/05 9:24:52 PM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Thanks for posting this, I'd been meaning to ask. Do you mean the church at the corner of 47th and Cedar? I parked on 47th on Friday night, and my car had a ticket on Monday morning. This is around the corner from my house, so I was unaware that there was reason to move the car on Saturday. I checked the Parking Authority web site, but the options were pay or schedule a hearing, no provision for mere inquiries. I've been more concerned with the mystery than the money. Thought maybe I'd missed temporary signs in the dark on Friday, but it seems not, so I'll write a note too. Sigh. But a minor annoyance compared to the original question. - Original Message - From: "Marielena Mata" [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; univcity@list.purple.com Sent: Wednesday, February 16, 2005 1:16 PM Subject: RE: [UC] Nightmare on Spruce Street Cindy, I am not sure about the proper course of action but we just sent a little letter to Jannie Blackwell, the Police Dept. and the Church in the corner of our block. There was a funeral on saturday and they put up the temporary No Parking signs (9am to 1pm) the morning of the funeral. Since we had already been on the spot from the night before, we got a ticket. It's bad enough that we pay for parking permits in our block but on top of that, the police dept. didn't follow their own rules of 24h posting of temporary signs AND we now have to pay a ticket. For what it's worth - most New Yorkers still refer to Sixth Avenue as Sixth Avenue, not Avenue of the Americas, the avenue's official name.. I'm surprised Ed posted it, since he is the current mayor's fawning lap dog and back-channel PR piece. While MLK Jr. has no Phila history, if there is an arterial that needs to be used to spread the teachings of MLK, Jr., it is North Broad St. If they really want to celebrate the meaning of his life, rename North Broad St. "MLK Jr. Way" Try to stop the young men and women killing each other through violence, and poisoning each other with drugs. Not to mention the harm they visit upon their own families. But, this isn't about celebrating the life and ways of MLK, Jr., its about sending a disturbing autocratic message about "Black Power"; just like "the brothers and sisters are in charge" or whatever self-serving pabulum John Street spewed. It also diverts attention away from the US/DOJ corruption prosecutions. What a shame for Our Wonderful City. Does the world needs another road named after Martin Luther King? No. Naming the drive after MLK is political pander to a gulible public. The people promoting the change don't have to do the hard work of say-- building and maintaining a Martin Luther King Civil Rights Center that actually has meaning and educational value. They change the name of a drive that has no real connection to Martin Luther King and the public thinks they're wonderful. It's the same kind of political pandering that led to JFK and Columbus Blvds. Every identifiable political group will demand public places named after them as their power increase. In forty years will the drives have the same names as they have at the end of February 2005? [UC] NYTimes.com: Philadelphia Hopes for a Lead in the Wireless Race
Title: E-Mail This This page was sent to you by: [EMAIL PROTECTED] The NYT, in another example of its latest foray into lightweight journalism, explores the Philadelphia WiFi experiment. As a proponent of WiFi, but not the John Street way, I ask you to consider some of the following issues. 1) NYT states, "Experts say the Philadelphia model"...(blah, blah) but never mention the name of any industry experts. What happened to NYT's once world-class journalism or is this nothing more than a puff piece? 2) The article refers to Mayor Street's presentation at the United States Conference of Mayors, which leads us to two points one pragmatic regarding organizational work product and one regarding grass level self-aggrandizement. a) Where is the public release of John Street's long promised time critical WiFi plan? He has time to implement the MLK Drive naming with no public discussion, while our City molders and our libraries are shuttered; confused priorities that must have MLK Jr. looking down and saying, Oh my God. b) Self-aggrandizing WiFi ! task force member Ed Schwartz does not make this issue of the NYT. Who cares? At least he can tell the reporter from a local alternative weekly dog poop wrapper they have heard of Ed and WiFi in Australia, as if anyone really cares. In case none of you read a local newspaper like our daily record The Philadelphia Inquirer, take a look at the 02/16/05 edition: Why FBI wanted to bug Street. How many more bites from our public apple are we going to let John Street take, before we send our lame duck mayor packing? Am I really being harsh? Do you really want the same municipal mentality that has mismanaged PGW and PWD implementing WiFi for our City? This is not an issue of politics or race. It is an issue of developing the future of our City. John Street is a leader who has failed to roll out public access cable TV, yet a good part of our City has been wired for between 10 and 15 years. John Street is a politician who does not hold live broadcast press conferences, yet he has be! en an elected official for 20 plus years. John Street is a may! or who c annot find the time to handle live constituent discussions on radio or TV, but he can find the time to drive to Jacksonville FL for the Super Bowl. Communication is both an art and a science, neither of which John Street understands or appreciates. Effective communications is one of the keys for growing a better and brighter future for our beloved City of Philadelphia. John Street cannot be trusted with the key to a bounty as important as the lives of our children and William Penn's dream for all the citizens of Philadelphia. I'd be tickled pink to have any street in the city named after him. Now that our Frank Rizzo statuary needs have been accomodated. But, in keeping with the topical nature of the list, I'd prefer it was one in west philly. West river drive seems to me to actually be on the south side of the river anyway. Re: [UC] tailor/alterations - suggestions?
Thanks. Hopefully I will have better luck with White Seal than I've had with Farrar on 46th Baltimore or Harvard Cleaners on 42nd Baltimore. I found myself having to go to Farrar's several times to pick up my drycleaning because it was closed during posted business hours. I recently had a coat drycleaned at Harvard. After receiving a ticket with a price of $12, I later recieved a phone call saying that the price was a mistake and it would cost $20. I said I would just pick my coat up and take it elsewhere to which she replied that the coat had already been sent to an off-the-premise site to be clean. Frustrated by this, I was able to talk her down to $18. I picked my coat up this week only to find a receipt to a Korean restaurant (to which I've never had the pleasure of dining) and the exact change received from the bill in my pocket (unfortunately this was only 35 cents). Needless to say, I feel violated everytime I wear that coat.[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: In a message dated 2/16/2005 11:56:17 P.M. So far, I have had consistent good, friendly service both for cleaning and tailoring from The place at 41st and Spruce. And, if I picked up a coat from a cleaners and found evidence that the owners had given It to someone else to wear to a restaurant, I would demand that they give me the cleaned coat For free -- with a threat to report them to the Better Business Bureau and to the police if I did not get free service after they had turned out to be in a business other than that Of cleaning the clothes given to them for that purpose. [UC] Judge Inspector of elections -- primaries
At the time of the last election, there was some interest among participants in this list in serving as poll officials. If you're interested inbeing nominated by your party to runfor Judge of Elections, or Inspector of Elections (there are two, a minority and a majority inspector -- one from each of the major parties), now's the time to get your petitions signed to get your name on the ballot for this spring's primaries. If you're a Libertarian, a Green, a Socialist-Worker, or a registered voter in another non-D/non-R party, you probably won't be having a primary and can run in the general election next fall without going through this step. Democrats can contact Sylvia Hammerman Brown ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) and Republicans can contact Matt Wolfe ([EMAIL PROTECTED]). Voters registered in other parties with any questions can feel free to contact me off list and I'll try to answer them or direct you to whoever can. [UC] Tone of List
Just wanted to let you know, I've gotten a lot of emails over the past few months from people who (like myself) are reluctant to post to this list because some of the just dowright rude comments certain posts have engendered. This is really too bad, because it means that we are missing out on informative/interesting/humorous commentary relevant to our neighborhood. I honestly think, that while some of exchanges are amusing, little in-jokes and repartees, are not really appropriate to this list - would be more appropriate to personal email. I have hear my view of this stated numerous times in numerous ways, by other posters. Hopefully, in time this will change. Re: [UC] Tone of List
Actually Jeff created a new list after the last round of complaints. It's called univcity-announce (univcity-announce@list.purple.com). While it's still not as heavily used as it should be, it's for people announcing things relevant to UC. Basically all of the announcements that now go to univcity should be going to the announce list. Thus people subscribed to the announce list can still see the announcements without the amusing, little in-jokes and repartees. You might consider joining that list instead of univcity. Any group of 300+ people is bound to contain bickering and gossip. That seems pretty unavoidable in our society. Given the number of people on the list and the number of people in this area with strong opinions, I think the level of chatter is usually pretty reasonable. Personally I really appreciate the chatter on the list. I've met numerous people through the list and it's largely due to the chatter. [UC] Fwd: [phillyblocks] Update on the City's Wireless Project
This is one task force member's (Ed Schwartz') personal/biased opinion. Personally, I believe the bar for municipal achievement in our City is set very low. Look at ourneighborhoods and see the rampant disorder, because of a lack of a coherent municipal strategic vision. Our lack of attractiveness to outsiders, is only lost on our municipal leaders. Monday's Daily News featured a significant piece onrecreational development targeting the core Fairmount Park System. However important the program may be, it will not create new capital for our City. WiFi done right will lead to the creation of new capital ()as well as operational savings. Why wont our City approach this strategic issue in a measured and disciplined manner. If I am an out of town business owner, I am more concerned about the availability of reliable utilities, of which WiFi is one, and what appears to be a governmental climate of pay-to-play. Philadelphia being so provincial does not realize the rest of the world considers our form of P2P political corruption. Speaking of P2P, those of you not old time Philly people, will be surprised to learn most Philadelphians still think P2P (phenyl-2-propanone ) is what you use to cook meth; a thriving part of our local low-tech pharmaceutical industry. May God save our City! Our report was submitted to the Mayor in December. We've met further with him in January. We are as impatient as anyone for the Mayor to make official whatever the City's ultimate recommendation will be. Based on the discussions we've had, however, I believe that the City will move forward with most--if not all--of what we propose. The bottom line here is that the project is far from being 'dead on the vine.' In fact, the delay stems primarily from the Mayor's need to be sure of all aspects of what we recommend so that the proposal isn't shot down once we go public. Needless to say, there are just a few other problems and issues facing the City right now, but this is a priority, so I expect a full announcement fairly soon. As to the story in the New York Times: Yes, indeed, it is a 'puff' piece. Why exactly should we upset about that? When was the last time the New York Times ran a 'puff piece' on anything involved with Philadelphia--or the Wall Street Journal and the Associated Press and business magazines all over the country, for that matter? They've all written about Philadelphia's wireless plan. In fact, this initiative has given Philadelphia more favorable publicity related to economic development than any project I've seen in the past thirty years. All the more reason that we need to make it work. But let's be pleased for a change that our efforts here are getting this kind of attention. As to the op-ed piece from the Philadelphia Inquirer that I link to here: http://www.philly.com/mld/inquirer/news/editorial/1091.htm Scott Walstein, the author, works for the corporate-backed American Enterprise Institute so this is the industry fighting back. He makes three points. 1. Going wireless won't end the digital divide. Of course it won't. But it will provide enormous, immediate benefit to the 58% of Philadelphia residents and businesses who now have Internet access and create a new impetus for bringing everyone online. I've been working this area for ten years, since the now-dead LibertyNet was established to be a Delaware Valley portal--and then died because neither the private sector nor the City were willing to support it. We've survived (and you all benefit from that), but this is the first time that the City itself has made establishing Internet access throughout Philadelphia a priority. That creates new opportunities to bring everyone online. 2. The wireless technology will be obsolete before we're up and running. Hmmm...WiFi is what's out there now. WiMax is selling itself as an alternative to DSL and Cable. Somehow, Verizon and Comcast seem to think that this technology will be here long enough for them to take advantage of it. The City intends to be up and running by September, 2006. Isn't it interesting that the corporations involved in this industry are angry that we're doing this because they are making money in this area. But then they turn around and say it's a losing proposition for the City. Duly noted. 3. The wireless plan will use taxpayers' dollars. It won't--beyond the administrative time now being spent on putting the program together. I can't say much more about that now, because it gets into the details of the proposal. But I can

So as soon as you can find a website extolling the pleasures of male castration, e-mail me back. I'll be waiting, and I'll even bring the rusty machete. Karen Allen So get it straight Sam. RE: [UC] tone of list (social scene in w. philly)
Title: RE: [UC] tone of list (social scene in w. philly) There is no real social scene out here in UC, so people look to this list for interaction. The lack of adult recreation is a real problem here in UC, unlike CC, Fairmount, or Northern Liberties. while i agree that we need better places to go around here than strikes -- (oh, if only Fume was called no fume ... ) i want to add that for me in the past year or so, this list _has_ become the social scene. there are half a dozen good friends i've met through this list who help occupy all the vacant moments that christy and i may have during the course of the week and have enriched both our lives and our enjoyment of this little community to no end. kc

Reaching the moral high ground at last, and enjoying my own personal enlightment, I've come to realize that it's posts like these from Karen that are turning the list into a poison pit! Re: [UC] Tone of List - Don't Change
Not to burst the feel good lawyer bubble, but actually, Lee and Carlos had insurance coverage through their store and their carrir paid for their defense (i.e., my fees). For what it is worth, I did win some muckity muck award last year for my pro bono service through the Philadelphia Volunteer Lawyers for the Indigent. I have developed this bizarre speciality in representing clients who purchased a car only to have the dealer or tag service not transfer the title into their name leaving them the equitable, but not titled owner of the vehicle. I now have a lessened need to tell sick lawyer jokes. I just wont seek your help, if I run a woman over with a bicycle. You did handle that case pro bono, reinforcing the adage you get what you pay for? ;~} Ciao, Craig Sent via the WebMail system at mail.sbvlaw.com You are receiving this because you are subscribed to the list named UnivCity. The web is full of wonder. You are kidding? Ross, you hope she's not kidding? Somewhere, a man is afraid to fall asleep tonight.
