[UC-Announce] Recycle NOW West Phila wants you to go to the Flower Show for free!
Recycle NOW West Phila wants you to go to the Flower Show for free! Your friends and neighbors at RNWP bring you another opportunity to help you help us improve recycling and save the City tens of millions of dollars each year and get you in free to the Phila Flower Show. The catch? You have to sit through a Mayoral Candidates Forum and ask a recycling question and/or sign the RNP petition: http://www.recyclenowphila.org/TakeAction.asp Actually you don't really have to do either, but why wouldn't you? Here are some hot sample questions that you are welcome to recycle off me: Will you commit to implementing a city-wide, incentive-based single-stream, weekly curbside collection recycling program and begin the roll-out in University City, of course? Will your administration continue to look the other way while the Streets Department waste smillions of our tax dollars that could be spent on the new West Philly High School or the Clark Park renewal plan? Why is Phila continuing to violate its own mandatory waste diversion law? Detroit Recycles more than us. How pathetic it THAT? Or something else recyling-related. No under-handed soft-ball pitches like the old, played-out, Do you like recycling?. That's sow 2006. Everybody (except the dirt-balls on Kyle's block) likes recycling. If you agree to bring one of our fantastic RNWP signs, I'll let you bust line ahead of me. I'll be the guy with the Clark Park Wants to Recycle sign. Here's the officail invite that I recycled especially for you from the PA Envir Council: The Council is excited to share this opportunity with you. Here is a chance to hear the candidates discuss issues that are both critical to the Council's work and important to Philadelphians' quality of life - open space, greenways, vacant land, stormwater, parks, and access to our natural resources. My apologies for any double postings. Join the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, the Pennsylvania Environmental Council and the Philadelphia Parks Alliance for a Mayoral Forum on Monday, March 5th from 6.00 to 7.30 pm at the Pennsylvania Convention Center: Location: Pennsylvania Convention Center, Room 114, Auditorium (13th Street Entrance, between Arch and Race Streets) Date: Monday, March 5, 2007 Time: 6 to 7:30 pm (Doors will open at 5 pm) Limited Seating Advance reservations are required. [UC] SHCA's zoning committee hearing on the liquore store has been postponed
From today's DP News Brief: Committee postpones liquor board hearing _Jared Miller_ (http://media.www.dailypennsylvanian.com/user/index.cfm?event=displayAuthorProfileauthorid=2517506) The Spruce Hill Zoning Committee has postponed its discussion of a proposed move of the campus liquor store, committee chairman Barry Grossbach said. The committee was slated to debate the move - which would have brought the liquor store, currently located at 41st and Market streets, to the corner of 43rd and Walnut streets - at a hearing yesterday but decided to hold off to allow the affected parties to try to resolve their differences outside of a formal meeting, Grossbach said. A zoning hearing is now scheduled for March 21; Grossbach said the committee will be forced to make a decision regardless of whether any compromises are made. The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board has denied the move will take place, but both community officials and the building's developer have confirmed that preliminary discussions have been ongoing. The prospect of a liquor store in the area has raised some controversy in the area, as both the Masjid Al-Jamia Mosque and the Penn-Alexander K-8 school are located in the area. Members of the mosque have voiced strong opposition to the move, both because it is illegal to drink alcohol under Muslim law and because of the negative effect a liquor store might have on the neighborhood. RE: [UC] SHCA's zoning committee hearing on the liquore store has been postponed
Members of the mosque have voiced strong opposition to the move, both because it is illegal to drink alcohol under Muslim law And this is where I have some serious problems with this. By Catholic law I cannot eat meat on Fridays during Lent -- does that mean that Abbraccio (and all the other grocery stores/restaurants) within a certain number of blocks of SFDS should not be allowed to sell meat on Friday? We do not live under Muslim law. If various parties in that area, including the leadership of the Mosque, want to argue that moving the liquor store might have a negative effect on the neighborhood, fine. I'm certainly not thrilled about past the drunk panhandlers when I go to the state store on Market Street. I'm not thrilled about the guys who ask me for money every time I go in to the A plus at 45th and Baltimore. If the State Store system is trying to create a more upscale store, that should include a commitment to deal aggressively with illegal behavior. Basing neighborhood zoning decisions on the laws of the various religions that happen to have a base in the area is a VERY slippery slope. [UC] anybody going to the milton street rally at noon?
I'm thinking of hopping on the train and heading down -- anybody else? we could make a picnic out of it. kc Milton: March 1 is do-or-die day By WENDY RUDERMAN BOB WARNER Circus sideshow or serious contender? You decide. T. Milton Street, who hopes to replace his younger brother as mayor, offered an interesting political wager yesterday. Street promised to drop out of the mayoral race if he fails to draw a minimum of 5,000 supporters to a noon rally at City Hall on March 1. If they don't show up, then I'm out, Street said. That's the end of it. You don't have to worry about me again. All right? OK? As Street called upon the city masses to rise up and join him, another mayoral candidate beseeched voters and television- news crews to ignore Street's clown-like antics. [Street] is a bad joke, said former Councilman Michael Nutter, one of five other Democrats seeking the mayor's job. Nutter called a news conference outside City Hall yesterday to denounce Street for trying to turn a serious election campaign into a local, regional and, eventually, a national joke. Nutter commented one day after Street, 67, was arrested in Moorestown, N.J., on outstanding traffic warrants from 2004. [UC] Zoning and the proposed liquore store on Walnut Street
Kathleen Turner wrote: If the State Store system is trying to create a more upscale store, that should include a commitment to deal aggressively with illegal behavior. In the midst of a bunch of holier-than-thou messages, I really believe that Kathleen has stated the case for or against the liquor store in the most logical way. If the Zoning process and subsequent enforcement are done properly, then a new establishment should always be required to conduct itself responsibly. My understanding is that property owners/tenants (depending on how a lease is written) are responsible for the sidewalk out in front of their premises and any parking areas under their control. This includes keeping the surface in good repair, snow shoveled, trash picked up, etc. Plus I take it to mean that if there are panhandlers, loiterers, prostititues, drug dealers, vagrants on these premises, it is the property owners/tenants responsibility to deal with it. By the way, we at Abbraccio have to deal with this type of issue freqently; sometimes it means calling the police. The main argument AGAINST the liquor store, in my opinion, is their past failure to take any responsibility for outside of their premises. If someone really wanted to fight the proposal at Zoning, I recommend taking a videotape of a few hours of the front of the current store at 41st and Market. The front of store itself looks like an uninviting hellhole; it seems almost barricaded, as if it belongs in Baghdad. And then of course there are the panhandlers normally found all over in front. Meanwhile, if the liquor store folk wanted to make a case FOR the move to Walnut Street, then I think the best case would be a written ironclad commitment to maintaining the entire premises, inside and out, in a responsible manner. A senior LCB should be held accountable for any problems. (In other words, not like at the current store.) Perhaps you might note that I am not a big fan of the State Store system. It is my opinion that the worse liquor store in New Jersey is still better than the best liquor store in Pennsylvania. Roger

Re: [UC] Zoning and the proposed liquore store on Walnut Street
Roger, you make good points about exterior maintenance. The landlord at the new location would be Daniel DeRitis whose company is Apartments at Penn. He is a capable and hands-on person who has long been involved in University City clean safe initiatives, and I believe he will be able to hold the PLCB to their promises to do a good job at the new location. It looks like the 41st Market landlord didn't care one way or the other. We can get one clue about the new landlord based on the maintenance of the location while it was Rite Aid. Though we don't know the specifics of the lease, it was well cared for - an indication that the landlord either had a lease requiring that, or stepped up to the plate when maintenance was needed. Here's another clue. Go to the Penn OCL website to see how tenants have rated Apartments at Penn: _http://dolphin.upenn.edu/~consumer/_ (http://dolphin.upenn.edu/~consumer/) These are apartments, not commercial spaces, but you'll see that for the three years OCL has ratings, Apartments at Penn has almost entirely As and Bs, which is impressive. While you're on that site, you can also check out Al Krigman's KRF Corporation's ratings. Also mostly As and Bs, but also some Cs, more than Apartments at Penn has. By the way, it has been pointed out to me that Al's opposition to the new liquor store location just MIGHT have something to do with who the landlord is, since Danny DeRitis is a big supporter of the UCD's NID project. [UC] It's the Milton Street Show!
Those of you who didn't make it down to the Milton Street rally to represent West Philly missed a really good time. Seriously, it was the most entertaining political rally I've been to in quite some time. Mr. Street missed the 5,000 mark he'd been hoping for by ... Er, a lot. I estimate there were probably 200 people there, maybe 40 of them were reporters. Mr. Street is, I believe, a much more charistmatic speaker than his brother, the Mayor, but he is also prone to flights of ... Well, complete weirdness. About 10 minutes into his speech, he brought a coffin out on stage, saying that he hope to end violence in the city. And then he started preaching, really preaching, like quoting the bible and waving his arms while the crowd shouted AMEN! and then, overcome by the spirit -- he burst into song. I kid you not. And this is probably what you'll see on the news tonight. He actually has a pretty good singing voice. This went on for a while. Periodically he'd lean on the coffin, close his eyes and start praying, then he'd run up front and wave his arms around. He dealt with some hecklers, said that Bob Brady's house in New Jersey was a lot bigger than his house in New Jersey, then he went off and sang a duet with some guy from WIP. And that was that. Everybody seemed to get a good chuckle out of it and you could tell the reporters were glad to be doing this rather than covering some high school kid who's making 10,000 paper cranes for peace or something. I heard one of them say People should have to PAY to see this, I feel like I just went to the theater! RE: [UC] When is your company going to shape up, Melani?
Al, You're obviously searching, and reaching pretty far, for a reason to pick on Melani. Her association with Urban Bye is the same as my association with the US Marines. I was a combat photographer in a Naval Engineering Battalion which came under the umbrella of 1st Marine Expeditionary Force out in Iraq. I never murdered or raped anyone, nor did I even shoot my rifle in self-defense. Does my association with the Marine force that the murdering platoon members belonged to make me a murderer? I took photos of engineering projects that the 1st MEF tasked us with. I received my paycheck from the US gov't. Does my affiliation through doing my job make me a party to murders and rape committed by a very few Marines? I was just doing my job. Melani is just doing her job. We all need employers to pay us. Please for our sanity, pick some topic that is relevant, not just one meant to bring unwarranted negative attention to someone for something they have little association with. I happen to like and get along well with Dan DeRitis (as I do with many people who have differing views than I do on a lot of topics). I've gotten along well with Dan, in fact, for a long time. Melani apparently doesn't remember that I opposed the Brewpub on the same grounds. Namely: 1) That zoning is supposed to provide people with reasonable expectations of how the area around them will evolve. And changes in zoning take that away -- so they should be pursued with extreme care. 2) That, as a community, we give what the current discussion about people imposing their will on others makes seem like a lot of lip service to diversity. Celebrating diversity doesn't mean just saying hi to people dressed in funny clothes or eating in restaurants that serve food our parents wouldn't recognize as such. It means, among other things, being sensitive to their cultural mores. I've been very consistent about this -- as a look back on the archives of this forum will clearly show. And, in case nobody's noticed, it's one of my underlying reasons for opposing the NID -- which I believe is part of a gentrification effort by certain non-academic but self-anointed elements at Penn -- and will gradually cause the displacement of the people who add diversity to this community. Those who think I oppose the NID purely for the sake of my own wallet have but to look back through the archives and find that I've opposed much of what Penn and UCD have done in and (I believe) to the community long before they were talking about assessing anybody... for these very reasons. And, I have some intuition about why people like Melani ascribe covert intentions to what I say and do. But I don't throw them in her face in front of everybody, as she seems to relish doing to me. I'm not asking you for your opinion about the liquor store's possible new location. We all know that, by now. I'm asking you for your opinion of the potential landlord's capabilities. Can you help answer Kathleen Roger's concerns about maintenance at the new site, if the liquor store were to move and become a tenant of Dan DeRitis? You said earlier that you like him. Do you think he is a good landlord, committed to University City, and capable of ensuring that the PA Liquor Control Board would run a good store? Or not? 1. I was down at 440 N. Broad St.(School District Headquarters) giving ALL of my credentials to prove I can teach at the school that I have been for 21 years; i.e. am I Highly Qualified under the No Child Left Behind legislation. Undoubtedly there will be even MORE Teacher Training and Professional Development because of this and Why? Through all this School Reform, there has been a missing link. Last week a teacher at Germantown High School had his neck broken for taking an iPod away from a student which he would have returned at the end of class. People who came to Milton's rally might have been parents to those same kids. Not funny to me. Not at ALL. On 3/1/07 2:23 PM, Kyle Cassidy [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: . [UC] State Store Mosques More PC
The ongoing bickering over the location of ETOH manufacturing and distribution facilities in UC up and coming locales should be an opportunity for us to knowledgeably, critically, and judciously discuss both land use and political correctness. I thought the following two articles highlight how the upward spiraling application of PC threatens the bedrock of durability for our extraordinary democracy -the balancing of rugged individualist freedoms with the moderations enabling the good of the greater society. In the first article at what point do we allow minority religious freedom to violate majority civil rights not to mention commerce? In the second article the use of the word gay is socially insensitive and actionable, while suggesting a child's Mormon family practices polygamy is not. Back to local self-determination, the last major change to local zoning by legislation that I remember, excluding banning vendors, was app 1980 and south of Baltimore. Perhaps the changing nature of the community and the expansion of the University should motivate those vested in the community to revisit local land planning practices, not just let politicians rewrite the zoning code. _http://www.planphilly.com/_ (http://www.planphilly.com/) Ciao, Craig 1)October 16, 2006 – 12:02 AM A two-tiered airport taxi system could lead to 'Chapter Two' By Katherine Kersten, Star Tribune Imagine you're returning from a trip with a bottle of French wine to celebrate your wedding anniversary. At the airport, you drag your bags out to the taxi stand in the cold breeze. As the cab pulls up, you hoist your suitcases, eager to get home. But when the driver spots your wine, he shakes his head emphatically. The Qur'an prohibits him from accepting passengers with alcohol, he tells you. OK, so you'll take the next cab. But the next driver waves you off, and the next. Scenes like this have played out hundreds of times at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport over the last few years. About three-fourths of the 900 taxi drivers at the airport are Somali, many of them Muslim. In September, the Star Tribune reported that one flight attendant had been refused by five drivers, because she had wine in her suitcase. Taxi drivers who refuse a customer, except for safety reasons, must go to the end of the taxi line. They face a potential three-hour wait for the next fare. Muslim drivers asked for an exemption, and officials of the Metropolitan Airports Commission proposed color-coded lights on cab roofs to indicate whether the driver would accept a passenger carrying alcohol. But last week, the MAC announced that it would not adopt the new policy. Officials cited an overwhelmingly negative public reaction, among other reasons. I've had over 500 e-mails and calls, and not one supported the change, said Patrick Hogan, MAC spokesman. Why? Aren't Americans accustomed to granting modest legal accommodations to groups or individuals on the basis of their religious beliefs? For many people, Hogan speculates, the issue may have been bigger than drivers' reluctance to transport alcohol. I think people were afraid there would be a Chapter Two. In some other cities, Chapter Two has already begun. Muslim cab drivers elsewhere, for example, have refused to transport blind customers with seeing-eye dogs, which they say their religion considers unclean. On Oct. 6, the Daily Mail of London reported that two cab drivers had been fined for rejecting blind customers. In Melbourne, Australia, at least 20 dog-aided blind people have lodged discrimination complaints after similarly being refused service, the Herald Sun reported. In Minneapolis, Muslim taxi drivers have repeatedly refused to transport Paula Hare, who is transgendered, KMSP-TV, Channel 9, reported this month. Daniel Pipes, director of the Middle East Forum, wrote about the MAC's two-light proposal in the New York Sun on the day its rejection was announced. While the proposal seemed like a common-sense compromise, he wrote, on a societal level, it has massive and troubling implications. Government sanction of a two-tiered cab system would amount to an acknowledgement that Shari'a, or Islamic law, is relevant to a routine commercial transaction in the Twin Cities. The MAC, a government agency, would be officially approving a signal that differentiates those who follow Islamic law from those who don't. And what if Muslim drivers demand the right not to transport women wearing short skirts or tank tops, or unmarried couples? After taxis, why not buses, trains and planes? Eventually, in some respects, our society could be divided along religious lines. The negative reaction to the two-tiered solution does not spring from hostility to Muslims. Muslims have thrived in America. On average, they are well-integrated and have higher incomes and
