 Obituary Paul J. Palmerio

My sister, Dr. Antoinette Kruc, gave me the sad task of announcing the death,
on April 4th, of her beloved husband Dr. Paul Palmerio, of cancer, at age 77.
Toni asked that I inform extended family, close friends and all those who
might have an interest in his passing. There will be visitation at
D’Anjollel Memorial Home, 2811 W. Chester Pike, Broomall, PA 19008, on Friday
April 10 from 7-9 PM and Saturday April 11th from 9-10:45 AM. A Funeral
service will be held from 11-Noon. Family and friends are invited back
brunch after the service at LaLaconda on W. Chester Pike. Paul’s
involvement in the community, as the family doctor to thousands, is huge. I
hope my message is shared where it can reach all those who care. Please
 forgive duplications.

I had the good fortune to know Paul as a friend of the family, a big brother,
(through marriage), doctor to me and my kids, friend and neighborhood hero.
Paul attended St. Donato Grade School, St. Thomas More High School and St.
Joseph University and the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Paul first met Toni in the early 1960’s. He was a pharmacy salesman, she a
recent PCPS, (now USIP), graduate working at Greene’s pharmacy on Baltimore.
They developed a friendship that included lots of fun arguments whenever his
beloved NY YANKEES were at bat. In 1963 Toni became a pharmacist at Riddle
Memorial Hospital as Paul switched firms to join Bristol drugs. He once
again found Toni on his sales route. Talks over lunch inspired them to apply
for Med School. Toni felt well qualified, by her academic successes and
pharmacy background, but faced the brick wall of gender prejudice. Paul was
in the habit of defining himself as ‘just’ a former army and current sales
person, from blue collar roots. Together they found the courage to apply to
PCOM, a school that might take them both. They got in, and then the hard
work began. They persevered through years of classes and excelled at
training, all while working to support their families. The friendship grew
during joint study sessions. After graduation, in 1977, there was a year of
internships. The weekly study sessions segued to a weekly session of future
planning and they realized they shared a common goal, to deliver general
medicine to the neighborhoods in which they grew up (him in Overbrook and her
in Spruce Hill). With the help of our sister, real estate broker Renee
O’Donnell, and private financing from William Davis of the eponymous
pharmacy, Toni and Paul were able to open Spruce Hill Medical in 1978.

For several decades they gave quality care to patients as diverse as any
population on the planet. With their pharmacy backgrounds they were often
able to find free samples or low price drugs for their poorest patients, and
as excellent diagnosticians they saved time, worry and lives across a huge
swath of our neighborhood. When Spruce Hill Medical lost a Zoning battle,
they continued their good work at KINGSESSING MEDICAL ASSOCIATES.

I found Paul to be a thorough practitioner and thoughtful communicator. He
granted me many favors for last minute appointments for Camp, Sports and
School certificates for my kids and would occasionally help out some of the
poorer kids on local teams, who would have been denied access to sports if an
affordable (read free)exam and certificate could not be obtained.

Paul was an athlete. He skied, for the Army, in the Italian Alps. He also
played on a traveling Army baseball team. Paul had a special place in his
heart for kids who played sports. Among his greatest joys was taking his
granddaughter skiing and reveling in their Soccer successes.

Paul collected sports memorabilia, and when his collection grew too large he
and Toni ran a successful side business of selling the items.

Paul was a life time traveler, even though most of his life was spent close
to his West Philly roots. When he finished his Army stint in Vicenza,
Italy, he remained in Europe for a full year, on the GI version of a grand
tour. He and Toni traveled extensively through-out New England, the
Rockies, our State Parks, Canada and Europe and especially loved Northern
 Italy.

When asked how they had survived the last few years of illness and impending
loss, Toni said that as Doctors, they “both knew Paul’s diagnosis was a death
sentence”. They “expected 6-9 months and felt gifted to have had over 3
years”. Toni was happy that Paul was able to work until March 19, and that
“he was able to enjoy life, laugh and smile every day”. She feels “grateful
for every extra day with him”.

Like the Phils with men on 1st and 3rd and no outs, we need to drive in some
runs soon, so we are discounting tickets for groups of 4 or more.
If you've already bought tickets at the full price, those count toward your
group, so reach out to co-workers, folks around the way or forward this post to
your network and and we'll extend the discount to you.
There are still some tickets available for next Thursday night's game.

If you only attend one Phillies game this season, I recommend going with Curio
Theatre. It's fun to go with a group, a great way to meet neighbors and you
will be helping Curio Theatre provide a quality experience for a kid this
summer.
Tickets are $32. each and we are offering discounts so that no one misses out

Even so, he thinks he'll still take a financial hit."You can only take it up so high," said Pastore, 45, who makes a modest income from the buildings, which have commercial and residential units. "These are old buildings. Young kids just out of college are the tenants."Renters as a group haven't been much discussed in the raging debate over Nutter's plan to move the city to a property-tax system based on market values, known as the Actual Value Initiative (AVI). But tenant-advocacy groups say renters in neighborhoods where tax bills are shooting up could see higher rents — and the protections being discussed by City Council wouldn't apply to them."Clearly, any tax overhaul is going to affect tenants indirectly," said Phil Lord, executive director of the Tenant Union Representative Network. "The challenge is how to deal with the long-term tenant or low-income tenant. We believe there's a lack of parity between homeowners and tenants."Council is discussing an exemption that would cap tax bills for longtime homeowners in gentrified neighborhoods. And all owner-occupiers would potentially be eligible for a homestead exemption that would lower their assessment by $30,000.Councilman Jim Kenney acknowledged that renters would not be covered by those protections. But he said he's looking to introduce legislation in the fall that would limit the amount a landlord could raise rent."I have concerns about the renting population," Kenney said. "My staff is looking at some measures. Typically they're done in [Washington] D.C., because of the large number of renters there."But those protections would likely not cover the landlords renting out the buildings. Some real-estate experts noted that landlords probably couldn't pass on the entirety of a tax hike anyway and said that a rise in taxes may push some to sell their properties."A lot of people become landlords because they can't sell their property or they perceive they can't sell their property," said real-estate agent John Featherman. "For these individuals the question will be, ‘Does the fear of the unknown inspire them to sell instead of rent?' "Still, Pastore wondered if he'd even be able to sell the buildings he bought in the late 1990s, given the uncertainty about taxes."Who would I sell them to? Nobody in his right mind would buy any property right now," Pastore said. "I will eat out less, I guess. What else am I going to do?n

Podcast and more info: http://whyy.org/cms/radiotimes/

Radio Times with Marty Moss-Coane is spending an hour tomorrow, Tues,
1/24, on El Sistema, and Play on Philly, at Francis de Sales.

A music education program has changed the life trajectory of hundreds
of thousands of underprivileged children in Venezuela and has recently
come to Philadelphia. Curtis graduate STANFORD THOMPSON, the Executive
Director of “Play On, Philly!,” uses this after-school Venezuelan
program, “El Sistema,” to teach classical music to students at West
Philadelphia’s St. Francis de Sales Catholic Elementary School. He
says, “By making this investment in children to acquire high-level
executive functioning skills, they will soon pay back society through
a lifetime of productivity and responsible citizenship.” Thompson will
be joined by JAMIE BERNSTEIN, who is working on a documentary about
the method; and TRICIA TUNSTALL, the author of the new book, Changing
Lives: Gustavo Dudamel, El Sistema, and The Transformative Power of
Music.

[UC] Fwd: We won! DRBC cancelled Monday's meeting

Reply-To: protectingourwat...@lists.riseup.net

Philadelphia -- In a stunning victory for all of us who value public
health, the Delaware River Basin Commission has cancelled their
public meeting, planned for the 1,800 seat Patriots Theater in the
War Memorial in Trenton on Monday morning. Apparently the DRBC does
not like to have their regulations voted down. Governor Markell of
Delaware publicly announced he would vote against the proposed
regulations, in the interest of science, public health and the
environment. We are thrilled that some elected officials are
listening to the outcry against high-volume slickwater hydraulic
fracturing with horizontal drilling (fracking)!

Never has there been a more reasonable outcry. We know we can't live
without clean air, clean water and clean food; we know our
grandchildren may need this gas, but we don't need it. We need to
lead our nation away from fossil fuels altogether, and fast. The
cancellation of the DRBC meeting is a turning of the wheel of the
nation away from that insanity. We are taking the helm. We are going
sane.

The huge coalition we put together, including labor, students,
community groups, businesses, environmentalists, scientists,
physicians and public health advocates has put persistent pressure,
in all the right places, with one great voice uniting against
devastating our land, poisoning our water, and sickening our people
for the sake of short-term profits. We are proud to be among this
powerful ocean of voices for sane energy policy, for conservation,
for beauty and wholeness, for health and vitality, undermining the
cold corporate greed and arrogance which took for granted they could
poison us here too. No they can't!

NOTE: The nonviolence trainings planned for Sunday evening in
Trenton and NYC are STILL ON! A press conference, rally, and likely
a well-designed and high-spirited program including training,
learning, and empowering organizing is expected to be offered at the
Trenton venue where DRBC would have had their vote, on Monday. Stay
tuned for more details. --Iris

Gas Drilling Vote Cancelled

Delaware Governor to Vote No

For Immediate Release

November 17, 2011

Trenton, NJ: The November 21, 2011 vote to be held at
the Trenton War Memorial by the Delaware River Basin Commission has
been cancelled according to sources. The vote was to seek approval
of regulations that would have allowed shale gas drilling in the
Delaware River Basin by the beginning of 2012. The last minute
cancellation is the second time this vote has been put off. And
this time is believed to be in response to an announcement by the
Governor of Delaware that he would vote against the regulatory/
drilling proposal.

Delaware Riverkeeper Maya van Rossum praised Governor
Markell. “Governor Markell has listened to the will of the people,
to the science and to the tremendous environmental and community
harm being caused by gas drilling where it is happening. The issue
of shale gas drilling has finally moved out of the political arena
and is now being treated as an issue of genuine public policy
concern,” said Delaware Riverkeeper van Rossum.

“The residents of this region stood firm and demanded protection
from the ravages of gas drilling; forcing the politicians to listen
or risk their political ambitions,” van Rossum added.

While official announcement of the cancelled meeting has not yet
been provided by the DRBC, the Delaware Riverkeeper Network
confirmed this evening the availability of the Trenton War Memorial
venue, considering it for their own uses, confirming its source
information that the meeting has in fact been cancelled.

“This is a big win for our communities,” said Tracy Carluccio,
Deputy Director of the Delaware Riverkeeper Network. “For the past
month citizens have been writing letters, sending emails, and
leaving phone messages for their elected officials – while at first
they didn’t want to hear us, enough people reached out that they
have been forced to.”

“This is a big win for the River and the region” concluded van
Rossum, “Now we just need to put the nail in the coffin and make
sure gas drilling in the Delaware River watershed stays down and out
of our basin.”

[UC] HELP NEEDED: Cat lover needed for cat rescue or info

2011-11-01 Thread Lewis Mellman
I just noticed 2 kittens living in discarded debris behind an
apartment building on 50th St.

I will attempt to capture them before the trash hauling company comes.
I can deliver them somewhere, but I am allergic to cats and my dog
chases them, so they can't come into my house.
I don't have internet access there, so please call me with any info
rather than replying to this email.

If anyone wants a couple cute kittens, they are adorable.

Dear Mr. Zaman,
I am a concerned citizen and have several points and suggestions to
make about
the proposed additions to equipment at the Barto Compressor
Station, including
concerns about the potential environmental and health impacts. For
instance,

VOCs and nitrogen oxides from natural gas operations mix to produce
ground-level ozone, which causes a variety of respiratory problems

asthma. The emission of hazardous air pollutants is linked to
elevated levels

of cancer and neurological health issues.
I support the DEP’s decision to regulate the Barto Compressor
Station under a
Title V permit due to the Greenhouse Gas Tailoring Rule, requiring
specific
technologies to reduce air emissions. While these technologies
decrease
pollution, the DEP should require even more efficient equipment,
including
commercially available Best Control Technologies and Best
Management Practices,
that would bring emissions closer to zero (the ideal target).

URGENT ACTION SUMMARY:

1. Call / Fax Philadelphia Council to pass Jones/Reynolds Brown
Resolution; CALL ON WEDNESDAY OCT. 12th by 5 pm!

2. Come in person to Philadelphia City Hall by 10 AM (arrive 9:30 AM
to get through security; bring photo ID) Thursday Oct. 13th.

WHERE: City Hall (Broad and Market Streets, Philadelphia, 19107:
Council Chambers, Fourth Floor)

HOW LONG: 10 AM – 12 NOON (session may run later). Bring signs!

ALL COUNCILMEMBERS' PHONE NUMBERS and FULL RESOLUTION is here:
www.protectingourwaters.com

WHAT/WHY:
It’s about time…. With a vote now expected to open the Delaware
River Basin (DRB) to fracking on November 21st, it’s high time the
City of Philadelphia joins in with New York’s Attorney General,
Delaware Riverkeeper Network, Damascus Citizens for Sustainability
and others suing the Delaware River Basin Commission (DRBC) to
forbid fracking at least until a Basin-specific study of cumulative
impacts is completed, along with the EPA study on hydrofracking
impacts on drinking water.

Philadelphia City Councilman Curtis Jones and Councilwoman Blondell
Reynolds Brown have introduced a resolution enabling the City of
Philadelphia to join, as a Friend of the Court, the New York and
other lawsuits, gathering strength and force. The industry is
opposing this resolution more actively than usual, since it has
teeth and they don’t like teeth. The fracking industry is pressing
Council to oppose the Resolution. We need your support in favor!

Urgent: The Jones/Reynolds Brown resolution will be voted on on
Thursday, October 12th.Please call Councilmembers on Wednesday,
October 12th and come in person, 10 AM – 12 noon, to City Hall on
Thursday. We don’t need arsenic, benzene, 2-butoxyethanol,
chlorides, diesel, formaldehyde, glutaraldehyde, hydrochloric acid,
radium 226 or any other fracking flowback contaminants in our water
or air, and we must protect our neighbors’ health.

Raise your voice! Call on WEDNESDAY, October 12th, 9 – 5, beginning
with your own City Councilperson if you live in Philadelphia — just
go to www.seventy.org to find out who your Councilperson is. All
Councilmembers' phone numbers are here:

http://protectingourwaters.wordpress.com/2011/10/11/call-phila-city-council-weds-oct-12th-pass-resolution-joining-lawsuits-to-forbid-fracking-thurs-oct-12th-pack-the-hall/

The resolution is sponsored by Councilman Curtis Jones, Councilwoman
Blondell Reynolds Brown, and Councilwoman Quinones Sanchez. Please
thank the three of them; hold Councilman Kenney to his promise of a
“yes” vote; and urge every other member of Council to protect the
immediate and long-term integrity and health of Philadelphia’s
drinking water and air, and the food, forests, farms, economy, and
public health of our region by saying YES to the Jones/Reynolds
Brown resolution.

A boom-bust economy is not a healthy economy; a healthy economy
requires diverse, lasting, safe clean union jobs and an intact,
thriving ecotourism base, which this region has and cannot afford to
lose. Gas drilling workers are exposed to high levels of
contaminants and sometimes ask why their clothes are eaten away and
their skin is blistered. What’s the rush? Marcellus Shale has been
there 380 million years. Let’s maintain the moratorium until we
understand how shale gas drilling contributes to global scorching
and until we find out what all these toxic chemicals, kept secret
due to the industry’s special exemptions, do to the environment,
fish, wildlife and domestic animals, and human health!

This is a two-day alert. Call/Fax Wednesday; Come to City Hall
Thursday. Thanks for all you do!

Dear Protectors,
We are happy to announce that the Delaware River Basin Commission
has postponed the October 21st special meeting on gas drilling in
Trenton.

The rescheduled meeting is now set for Monday, November 21st, 10am
at the Patriot’s Theatre at the War Memorial in Trenton, NJ (1
Memorial Drive).

On Friday, our great friends and allies at Delaware Riverkeeper
Network dropped this press release explaining the postponement. Our
collective advocacy and agitation brought pause on the part of the
commission and its voting members. Keep up the great work!!!

Sign up now to get on the bus Protecting Our Waters is coordinating
from 30th St. Station in Philly: http://is.gd/oct21

We need to pack the hall to continue to show that the people will
not stand for dirty gas drilling in this critical and pristine
watershed.

See Josh Fox’s great video and call to action about this critical
date: http://vimeo.com/29952415

Between now and the end of the year, showing up en masse in Trenton
on November 21st is the most important thing we can do to stop
fracking.

See you there!!!

[UC] Fwd: Action Alert: October 21st D-Day for the Delaware

From: Protecting Our Waters protectingourwat...@gmail.com
Date: September 30, 2011 11:39:16 AM EDT

Subject: Action Alert: October 21st D-Day for the Delaware
Reply-To: protectingourwat...@lists.riseup.net

Friends, please join us – bring neighbors, friends, new sectors, new
protectors!

What: Delaware River Basin Commission (DRBC) special meeting about
gas drilling

When: Friday, October 21st 10 AM – 12 NOON, Assemble at 7:30 AM
Where: Patriots Theater, War Memorial, 1 Memorial Drive Trenton, NJ
08608
Why: DRBC has called this special meeting to vote on opening the
Delaware River Watershed to fracking, ignoring tens of thousands
who've stood up for our ecosystem, our economy, our lives. People
are already taking the day off from work, school and their normal
schedules to travel to Trenton on Friday, October 21st to stand
together to protect our water and to insist on putting health,
science and sanity ahead of corporate rule and economic ruin.

Get on the Bus:
Protecting Our Waters is organizing buses which will leave at 6:30
AM from 30th Street Station on Friday, October 21st. We must get to
Trenton early in order to fill the seats, as the industry is
expected to send busloads. Bus tickets may be purchased soon at
protectingourwaters.com; until then send bus inquiries to a...@protectingourwaters.com
.

Background: For over three years, Delaware Riverkeeper Network has
been leading the fight to protect the Delaware River Watershed from
pollution from toxic gas drilling. For over two years, Protecting
Our Waters has joined that fight along with many great allies.
Concerted action has helped keep the moratorium on drilling in place.

Most importantly, residents of the entire four-state watershed have
enabled us, working together, to generate tens of thousands of
comments demanding a continued moratorium and insisting on a
cumulative impact study for this watershed, which has not been
done. In the last comment period alone (Dec. 8 2010- April 15,
2011), 69,800 people filed comments with the DRBC – a magnificent,
unprecedented level of public participation.

But the DRBC -- a four-state entity composed of the governors of
Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey and Delaware along with the
federal government, represented by the Army Corps of Engineers --
doesn't seem to be listening.

Despite the vast amount of public comment, the scientifically
informed in-person testimony provided by countless residents of the
four-state watershed, and several active lawsuits, the DRBC has
scheduled a special meeting on October 21st to consider adoption of
the regulations they have drafted in order to move forward with
fracking. This action would lift the current moratorium on high-
volume slickwater hydraulic fracturing for methane gas in the
Delaware River Basin.

The New York Attorney General, Delaware Riverkeeper Network, and
Damascus Citizens for Sustainability have all filed lawsuits to
prevent the DRBC from moving ahead with their existing inadequate
regulations with no impact studies. We'd like the City of
Philadelphia to join in that effort. Those of you in Philly, call
your City Councilperson, and the Mayor’s office, right now to ask
them to step up! (Just go to seventy.org to find the phone numbers
you need)

On October 21st, we need to be there in large numbers -- all ages,
all walks of life; class field trips, labor unions, faith-based
communities, everyone who drinks water and breathes air. As usual,
DRBC meetings are scheduled at times that are terrible for working
people. So students, retired people, and those with flexible
schedules please do all you can to fill in that gap and come to
Trenton October 21st!

Meanwhile, Call the Guv: All hands on deck: Don't wait for October
21st to raise your voice! Call all four Delaware River Basin
Governors' now.

Q: What's this got to do with the rest of PA and the region?
A: See our new blog post: Protecting the Delaware River Basin is
Critical to Stopping Drilling Elsewhere

Psst: To keep up with all the issues we're posting information
about, from little-known documentation (dead calves born to
quarantined cows in Tioga County after cows drank from water tainted
by fracking flowback-- post 2 pm today) to the inspiring -- (Sandra
Steingraber wins Heinz award and dedicates the $100,000 to the fight
against fracking) -- please subscribe to our blog anytime: just go

Rutgers-Camden Chancellor Appointed to SRC

By Martha Woodall and Susan Snyder
INQUIRER STAFF WRITERS

Mayor Nutter has appointed the chancellor of Rutgers University-Camden
to the Philadelphia School Reform Commission.

Wendell E. Pritchett, a scholar in urban history who has experience in
government policy, will fill one of the vacancies on the five member
commission.

Pritchett resides in the city's University City neighborhood and
taught law at the University of Pennsylvania law school between
2001-09 and was the associate dean of the law school between 2006 and
2008.

Since June of 2009, he has been the chief executive officer at Rutgers
University-Camden.

There was no immediate word from the mayor's office when Pritchett
would be sworn in.

Nutter's announcement came one day after Robert L. Archie Jr. and
Johnny Irizarry resigned their seats.

Both were appointed by the mayor. The governor appoints three members
of the SRC.

[UC] build an ark

2011-09-08 Thread Lewis Mellman
Biking westbound over South Street bridge this morning in the rain I
noticed the river is almost over the piers.

I predict that they will be submerged later today.
Earlier, eastbound over Greys Ferry, I noted that the piers for the
permanently open, spinning bridge are almost underwater.
As I approached Franklin Field, I saw 2 guys caring for UPenn's new
sod and trees down below.

2 guys, a pickup truck with a water tank and gas-powered pump.
One guy was watering and the other was trying to stay dry in the rain.
I worry about the risk of over-watering.

I wonder how long it will take before the City decides to increase the
charge for owning parking spaces now that these pod locations are
owned by a for-profit company.

The interesting verbiage from the Press release…

http://www.phillycarshare.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/EHI-acquires-PCS.pdf

The acquisition closes tomorrow, Aug. 10. Financial terms of the
transaction will not be disclosed. PhillyCarShare will operate as a
for-profit service, and the brand name will be maintained during the
integration process. Almost all PCS staff members have been offered
positions.

It looks like the sale might be related to taxes as much as
anything, (loss of 501c status?) as the press release contains the
following...

In June 2010, a New York Supreme Court Justice found that car
sharing “is in 'the trade or business of renting or leasing motor
vehicles' as those words are traditionally and plainly understood.
In addition, the judge wrote: This bargain – use of a car in
exchange for a fee – appears little different from ‘traditional
rental car’ companies...”

I'm not certain why that reference is in the press release… pretty
much out of context where it is inserted.

Personally, based on my past experience with the acquisition of
National Car Rental by Enterprise/Almo, I expect rates to go up and
service to go down.

In any event, it is good to see that Private Enterprise has decided
to support the shared vehicle model and be a tax paying, instead
of tax consuming entity.

(BTW, Enterprise is hardly a small business with annual revenues
of 12.6 Billion and #17 on Forbes Top 500 Private Companies in
America.)

We have some exciting news to share with all PhillyCarShare members
and community supporters.

Enterprise Holdings has acquired PhillyCarShare, which not only
will provide an influx of new vehicles and additional resources,
but also enrich each member’s car-sharing experience. We see this
as a unique opportunity to improve operational efficiencies,
enhance financial stability and increase long-term customer
satisfaction. A copy of the press release can be found here.

Please keep in mind that all existing memberships and reservations
will be transferred with no interruption of service. And both fuel

will be coming soon:

• Newer cars
• More rate options
• More vehicles in more neighborhoods
• Streamlined driver approval process

To help celebrate this ground-breaking announcement, we are
soliciting your suggestions for new and/or expanded pod locations.
(Note that the hourly car share rate includes up to $300,000 in
liability protection, and the driver’s responsibility for physical
damage is $500.)

We are proud that PhillyCarShare will be part of the Enterprise
family and the company’s customer service legacy. We also are
excited to be able to continue offering important and sustainable
local transportation options in the Philadelphia area, regardless

Re: [UC] RoundUp burning is visible

the sod is not a monoculture. It contains a mix of different

Hanes is the professional in charge, and he doesn't think Roundup is
causing this phenomenon. For us laymen, this makes sense as well.
Roundup was applied evenly across the park, so it shouldn't cause
patchy damage.

Hanes emphasized that newly-aid sod is still fragile. It needs to be
babied during its first year. Park-lovers will be working to spread
that word. Ray (that's University Citoyen's real name, for
newcomers), if you want to organize an organic-compost movement for
the park, that would be wonderful! Please coordinate with Friends of
Clark Park and we'll explore if this is workable.

Dandelions or clover were not included in the new sod which was laid
down, so it's unlikely you'd expect to see them this soon. Don't
worry, all you weed-lovers, they'll enter soon enough by themselves;
you don't need to spend half a mill to plant them.

You repeat a foolish error, Ray, when you babble about Penn's UCD.
Hanes was paid entirely by Friends of Clark Park, which has run a
multi-year campaign to come up with the $75,000 needed just for his
blueprint. The work was approved and contracted by the City of
Philadelphia. While UCD is one of maybe 10 helpful partners on the
Clark Park Committee, it played a minor role at best in the Park A
Revitalization Campaign; your employer Penn's role was, if anything,
smaller.

In the meantime, Roundup foes should quit focusing on Clark Park,
where its use has ceased. They should turn instead to Woodland
Building Supply at 47th Woodland, which sells the same stuff to
some of your neighbors, day in and day out. So if you believe Clark
Park poses a Roundup hazard from a one-time use during
construction, your neighbors pose an even-greater hazard, no? You
should ferret them all out and organize a campaign against them.

Looking forward to that tea, though -- seriously.

you see perfectly green patches of grass right next to patches of
completely dead yellow grass -- it's not even a gradual shift...

also, no dandelions or clover, from what I can see from the bridge...

seems consistent with the practice of applying roundup at the

The email below is from another neighborhood list I am on. Sounds

detailed description. I have seen this truck around the neighborhood
too (didn't realize it until I read the info below). FYI.

I think someone mentioned this truck.

gt; They are, at this moment, picking up metal from a neighbor at
4612 Spruce St. (long story, but pretty sure this guy is on drugs
and/or dealing, always scavenging, asking for money ... Have called
the police several times on him)

[UC] Legitimate scrapping vs theft

2010-11-01 Thread Lewis Mellman

Rick,
I have no formal legal training, so I'll take a stab at it:
Legitimate scrapping requires the permission of the property owner
or their designated agent (eg: plumbing contractor) to go onto their
land in order to haul away their unwanted metal.
Theft is when you don't have such permission, but you take their stuff
anyway because you think that no one will notice until you're too far
away for them to read your license plate number.
I believe that it's trespassing to go onto someone's property to see
if there's a lock and chain that will need to be cut.

[UC] get involved with park governance

2010-09-08 Thread Lewis Mellman
Here's a great opportunity for people who want to get involved with
how the City of Phila manages parks but who don't trust or are unable/
unwilling to work cooperatively with existing park friends' groups.

From PennFuture's Next Great City Newsletter
http://www.pennfuture.org/:

The Commission on Parks and Recreation is working on creating a set
of proposed guidelines for how to protect Philadelphia’s outdoor
public park and recreational lands, and is developing a draft
ordinance to make that protection binding.

The Commission will be holding a meeting to review the draft ordinance
on September 22 at 6:00 p.m. at the Free Library of Philadelphia,
Central Logan Square Branch, 1901 Vine St.

Reply-To: ucityrecy...@yahoogroups.com

So this is pretty big deal for hard core recyclers and yogurt eaters
alike, as of August 1, Waste Management (the Exxon Mobile of trash
companies) will be taking over the recycling processing for the city
from Blue Mountain. The two upshots of this are that the city will
be saving more money per ton of recyclables (WM will be paying the
city something like $50/ton?) and essentially all plastics #1-#7
will be accepted in your normal curbside bin and processed. woohoo.

This is awesome news because it means that dedicated recyclers can
now divert around 95% of their waste from landfills and incinerators
with this expanded collection, Philly's plastic bag film take back
push: http://www.bringitbackphilly.org/ and composting http://www.phillycompost.com/Map.html

RecycleNOW has been working with Waste Management to create
something of a master list of all the acceptable and unacceptable
recycling materials. (we also know from experience that folks have
tons of questions about materials we've never given much thought to
before).

We believe they will take everything that Blue Mountain took with
some clarifications below. Waste Management is stressing that
nearly all of the accepted materials are packaging. See below for
the word on accepted plastics and other materials. The NO list is
almost the better list to look at. If it isn't in NO, it's probably
accepted.

[UC] Wendell Pritchett in the news

2010-05-02 Thread Lewis Mellman

Rutgers-Camden chancellor making his mark

By Matt Katz
Inquirer Staff Writer

The plan, he thought, was to use the Philadelphia pedigree, the Ivy
League credentials, the congressional office experience, the polished
persona - and run for office in Philadelphia.

His mother knew better.

I knew it would be academic all along, Carolyn Pritchett said.

She was right. Wendell Pritchett's ceaseless curiosity was best suited
to the lecture hall, even if a politician's charm and a propensity
toward public policy still lingered.

Now, Pritchett, who has a doctorate in urban history and a legal mind
fascinated by the complexities of urban transformation, has found a
laboratory where his passions collide: Camden.

Rutgers-Camden's new chancellor is a West Philly resident, renowned
expert on urban affairs, former policy director to Mayor Nutter,
assistant coach for his daughter's otherwise all-boys Little League
team, and the newest player in Camden's latest effort at revitalization.

Pritchett, 45, said he now has no interest in elected office. Instead,
he has bold plans for Rutgers University's sometimes overlooked Camden
campus, and those plans come just as the political establishment has
divined the city's colleges and hospitals, dubbed eds and meds, as
the best hope for saving this troubled city.

Eleven months after leaving as associate dean of the University of
Pennsylvania Law School to become chancellor, Pritchett hasn't saved
anything yet. But he has left his mark both at the chancellor's office
in a stately downtown rowhouse and at City Hall, two blocks away.

Consider his commitment to build two dorms, his mandate to attract
more students from city high schools, and his goal to quadruple the
number of students living on campus. He is opening a new nursing
school and presiding over the launch of two Ph.D. programs - one in
computational and integrative biology, the other in public affairs.
Both are intended as new niches for the school.

Pritchett also has vowed to double university spending with city and
Camden County vendors in five years, in an effort to help local
businesses.

It's really extraordinary how much he's accomplished in less than a
year, said his colleague Steven Diner, Rutgers-Newark's chancellor.
He's tactful and friendly, but also forceful.

A city kid who grew up on the other side of the Delaware River, at
Second and Locust Streets, where his parents still live, Pritchett has
drawn the most attention for his public and aggressive efforts to
engage students with the city.

In January, at the school's first Civic Engagement Symposium,
Pritchett promised to turn the school into a national model for a
civically engaged university.

He opened an Office of Civic Engagement, intended as a bridge between
the city and the 6,100-student campus. He wants more city internships
and more classes like one that began this year on the history of Camden.

And as a child of two public-school teachers, Pritchett desperately
wants to aid the city's schools, among the worst in the state. He has
hired a director of public-school partnerships to lead the charge.

Pritchett meets with the city school superintendent monthly to discuss
a future Rutgers partnership with a North Camden school, and to aid
the district with analysis of student data. At these meetings, the
educational leaders also monitor the progress of teenagers in the
expanding Future Scholars program, where Rutgers staff members mentor
Camden students toward a possible four-year Rutgers scholarship.

And through the Center for Urban Research, which Pritchett created, he
sees an opportunity to attract national experts on cities to be
professors.

For a long time we didn't have an identity for the campus, and now
he's working toward that, said Gloria Bonilla-Santiago, director of
Rutgers' Center for Strategic Urban Community Leadership.

He's a new type of leadership, like Obama-type of leadership. It's
refreshing, it's new, it's hopeful, it's the medicine we needed here
on our campus.

As an engaging speaker, a former law professor, and the first African
American to lead a Rutgers campus, the Obama comparison is tempting.
Pritchett has certainly shown an affinity for politics.

Early in his career he directed the district offices of former U.S.
Rep. Thomas M. Foglietta, the South Philadelphia Democrat, and he
chaired the Obama campaign's Urban Policy Task Force.

Pritchett had a stint as Nutter's director of policy, and after Dana
L. Redd was elected mayor of Camden last year, he cochaired her
transition team. The two now speak about once a week.

He has revitalized the Rutgers-Camden campus, and he's really raised
[the school's] profile, said Redd, an alumna herself. We've been so

big ups to Mayor Nutter for continuing to expand recycling

Posted: Thursday, 03 December 2009 3:42PM

Philadelphia to Begin Rewarding Residents for Recycling

by KYW's Karin Phillips

The City of Philadelphia has launched a program designed to boost the
rate of recycled trash in the city.

Flanked by other city officials, mayor Michael Nutter kicked off the
program on Thursday at 28th and Diamond Streets in Strawberry Mansion,
the first section of the city that will be able to participate.

Basically, you get paid for your recycling. The more you recycle, the
more reward points you get for coupons redeemable at restaurants,
local and national stores, and even to make donations to nonprofit
organizations.

Ron Gonen is founder and CEO of Recycle Bank, which will run the
program for the city:

You want to make sure you recycle and you make sure that you
encourage your neighbors to recycle. You're going to be rewarded for
participating each week, and then you're also going to be rewarded for
the amount that your neighborhood and community recycle.

Block captain Robert Eding says it's a great idea:

It will help everybody know that we're going to have to keep our
blocks clean in order to keep the city clean, because it starts by one
block at a time.

The program will be citywide by next June. More information is

Re: [UC] Hotel site shifts to 41st and Walnut

2009-10-29 Thread Lewis Mellman
Lack of off-street parking was a significant problem for the 4001 Pine
location.
I wonder if plans for the new location include a believable parking
and service vehicle solution.
It will be interesting to see how folks living a few blocks from 41st
and Walnut who felt that the project was a great idea at 40 and Pine
are going to react to the new location.

The new plan also proposes the creation of an ‘L’ shaped street
from Walnut to 41st streets to divert traffic for the hotel off the
main streets, a major concern of opponents to the hotel’s previous
location.

[Attachment(s) from Mary L. Goldman included below]

All public and charter schools are required under the No Child Left
Behind legislation to send the name,
address, phone of all 11th and 12th grade students to the military
recruiters. However, the School District is
also required by law to tell the children and their parents that they
may sign an opt out form to keep their
information private. Either the parent or student may sign.

Usually these forms are not given out uniformly and explained in
schools as they should be. By signing the form
a student is merely keeping her/his contact information private ( so
as not to be bombarded at dinner for example).

Please pass this information along to any students and their families
who would be affected by this. Below is information
directly from the School District web site under students (www.phila.k12.pa.us
). I have also attached the opt out form itself
from the School District site.

Thank you for helping to pass along this information.

Military Opt-Out Form: Students in Grades 11 and 12

The federal and state governments require that The School District

below. Please note that you may sign and return the form yourself
since a parent signature is not required. The signed form must be

[UC] 47 Balt-Found Dog- Male black lab

Subject: [DogPark] Found Dog- Male black lab

Hi everyone,

We found a large black lab or lab mix on 47th near Baltimore today.
He seems to
be purebred but is a bit larger than most black labs I have seen-
around the
size of a yellow lab- so it's possible he is a mix. The dog is male,
so it's
not the same one someone posted about yesterday. He did not have a
collar, was
not neutered and had some sores on his legs so we think he has been
out on the
street for a while. He was also pretty skinny and smelly, and seemed
to have
bad dandruff (which is probably flea related). However he was fine
when we
caught him and put him on the leash and was very friendly and calm
and sat
calmly in our car on the way to the SPCA. He didn't bark at all the
entire
hour or so we had him. He knew the command sit and heeled very well
on a leash.
It's possible that he used to be someones dog and has just been out
on the

street for a while.

We took him to the Philadelphia SPCA and hopefully they will fix him
up and find
him a good home. If this is your missing dog, that is where he is.
If you'd
like to adopt a very friendly black lab, then the SPCA just got a
new one. :)

[UC] kitten found-49th and Beaumont

2009-08-26 Thread Lewis Mellman

Forwarded from Chester Ave Dog Park list:

I found a stray kitten(about 4 mos.) at 49th and Beaumont on 8/18. He
is black and white with a black smut nose. He was very skinny and
flea ridden, but I took him to the vet. He has been wormed and had
some shots and flea protection, but had a bite mark on his leg (so
no rabies shot yet) and appears to have a fractured pelvis, though
I did not do x-rays. He walks around fine however. He's FIV and
leukemia neg. and needs a new home as I already have 6 cats and a
dog (not afraid of the dog at all ) I will keep him for 6 weeks to
be sure there are no rabies from the bite, and Beth Van Horn will
help me get him neutered and the final shots. But he really needs a
home then. Please ask your friends. He's very affectionate.

If you know someone who might want him, email me at ashat74...@aol.com

[UC] Re: recycling alert: all that stuff that you can't put out on trash day

2009-06-07 Thread Lewis Mellman

Suzanne,
Leaving waste at the curb with the confidence that it will disappear
and the hope that it will be properly disposed of is certainly a lot
less trouble than actually disposing of it properly.
You are in good company because most people don't give much thought
to what actually happens to the things that they put out with their
trash.
Do you believe that the guy who took your freezer away for you pumped
out the refrigerant and contained it as required?
I suspect that he cut the copper and vented the refrigerant to the
atmosphere.
Since that's how it's always been done in my neighborhood I can
understand why you would be resistant to doing it differently in the
future.
Here is a link to the US Environmental Protection Administration's
guidelines for proper disposal of refrigerants:.

http://www.epa.gov/Ozone/title6/608/608fact.html
I am also skeptical that someone from WestPhillyFreeCycle (a GREAT
resource) is going to come and relieve me of my dead battery collection.

[UC] found kitten itvo 48th Springfield

Hello Lew,
I was hoping that you could cross post this:

I found a kitten about 6-8 months hanging in the bushes in Joan's
garden on the 48th st side near springfield ave for the past two days.

I think she is a she and is a torte shell pastel color ( light grey
with markings )
She did not appear malnorished , or unkept nor did she have any
collar or ID on.
So after seeing her there for two days early in the am and late in
the eve. I took her home.

Would love to give her back to her owner if she is lost and was not
discarded.
If you have heard of anyone who lost their kitty please send them my
way.

If you know of anyone who wants a kitty send them my way.

Will post some flyers .
I would appreciate it if you could cross post and or let me know
if you see any signs about a lost kitten.

She is very sweet, so she definitely had a home.

Thanks,

[UC] recourse for people who receive bogus trash and recycling tickets

2009-03-23 Thread Lewis Mellman
I think that attending these hearings and demanding accountability
regarding the recyling/trash ticketing program would be a great thing
for someone (other than me) to do.
A less time-consuming and frustrating option for people who receive
bogus tickets like these (even registered Republicans or
Independents) is to contact Marty Cabry or John Fenton in
Councilwoman's Blackwell's office.

To everyone who feels strongly about trash tickets:

The Streets Department goes hat-in-hand to a city council budget
hearing on Monday, April 27, from 2:00 to 3:30pm.

The public can sign up to testify at these hearings. It might be
interesting for someone to ask:

How much money does the city gross and net from these tickets?
Where does the money go (does the Streets Dept get it, does it go
into the general fund, does it just disappear)?
What evidence is there that this program has fulfilled its
purported purpose of cleaner streets?
I don't like paying the fines for highly dubious supposed
violations. But I don't feel strongly enough to devote the time to
prepare for and present testimony. Maybe someone else does.

As many of you know, we are moving in just 2 weeks. Unfortunately, I
have still not been able to find a good home for Cookie and Coco.

We're not able to take our beloved doggies with us and I've been
desperately trying to find a home for both of them 'together'. They
were
raised together and pine without each other. The Lab rescue has
already
said that they would probably separate them, so this is my last
resort.

Recently I tried to take Coco out in my car alone and she TOTALLY
refused to even get into the car without Cookie. She
absolutely

pulled back on her haunches until Cookie was by her side. Both doggies
are in great health, have been spayed and have ID chips implanted
under

the skin.

Cookie turned 3 December 10th and Coco will be 3 April 1st. Cookie is
my mellow-yellow, and just loves her tummy rubbed. Coco is adorably
funny and lives for her ball. She also loves the water. Cookie
loves lots of attention. Both doggies are loyal and love to walk. They
have been raised with my 3 kids running around all over the place, and
have survived Sammy's constant hugging and love of 'dress-up', so they
are fantastic family dogs. This is by far one of the most difficult
decisions I have ever had to make, but under the circumstances I
have no

choice.

Please, please forward these pics to all you know and help me find a
great home for these fabulous doggies. They are just adorable and it's
heartbreaking to let them go. In a perfect world, I hope that we could
find someone local so that we can still keep in touch and visit them.

I pray that someone somewhere can help us keep Cookie and Coco
together, and love them just as much as we do. Thank you all from the
bottom of my heart.

[UC] link to SEPTA travel advisory regarding trolleys in the tunnel

2009-01-12 Thread Lewis Mellman
I have no sense of whether this site is kept current because I look
to see if the blue light is flashing at 42nd St. to indicate the
trolleys divert.

I've noticed that those who choose to compare Phila to NYC are often
discouraged.

I am aware of that, and I would not have been surprised if they had
just transferred me to SEPTA for an answer -- I was interested to
see if they happen to have that sort of information. The point I
was trying to make is that after waiting over ten minutes nobody
had taken my call; in New York the answer to 311 is virtually
instantaneous, it rings once and a real person answers the call.

[UC] BIG ups to 311

2009-01-09 Thread Lewis Mellman
I used the City's new 311 info number on Wed to report a suspected
abandoned car that has been collecting leaves for a few months.
After waiting through cycles of a canned message reminding me that my
call was important and encourging me to continue to wait, the
operator was cheerful and helpful.
She also cautioned me that, although she was submitting the report
immediately, it could take numerous weeks before the car disappeared.

The car was gone by Thursday afternoon!
Hopefully someone got their stolen car back.
I guess I can rake up those leaves now.
One thing was a little challenging: when I entered 311 into my cell
phone it wouldn't dial the number because it thought I was
referencing a speed-dial number.
If anyone else has this problem, try my solution: I entered 311 into
my phone's directory under info and then called info. That
worked for me.

I think that 311 is to be used instead of the old 215-MU6-1776 number.
Go Eagles!

[UC] WEEKLY Recycling starts this week

2009-01-07 Thread Lewis Mellman

Here is the scoop from Maurice Sampson on what to recycle.
-Lew

Begin forwarded message:

Greetings,

Starting January 5th the City of Philadelphia will be collecting
recyclables every week, on the same day as your trash collection
rather than bi-weekly as it has been. This should make it a great
deal easier for everybody to recycle as you will no longer have to
remember which week you put your recyclables out on!

The more we recycle and reuse, the more money we can save the city!
Every ounce counts!

What you can recycle in the city's recycling collection:

Metal:
Tin and aluminum cans, empty aerosol cans, empty paint cans

Glass:
Jars and bottles

Mixed Paper:
Newspaper, magazines, mail (junk and personal), phone books, food
boxes (remove plastic liner), computer paper, flyers, wrapping paper
(no foil or plastic wrap), soda and beer cartons (no food-soiled
paper, please!)

Plastic Containers:
Recycle #1 and #2 plastics ONLY (mostly beverage and detergent
containers). These containers have narrow necks and wider bottoms.
Check the underside of each container for the number 1 or 2. All
container lids are recyclable and best if removed from containers.

Corrugated Cardboard:
Empty and flattened

Put your recyclables in bins. You can use an official city
container, or other containers of approximate 25 gallons or less
clearly labelled that it's recycling. You don't need an official
city containter to recycle, an old kitchen trashcan or laundry
baskets, paper bags, 5-gallon buckets, etc. are perfectly good to
put your recyclables out in.

If you want an official city bin you can pick them up at the
following locations:

Northwest
Domino Lane Umbria Street Monday - Saturday 8am to 6pm

Northeast
State Road Ashburner Street Monday - Saturday 8am to 6pm

North, Fishtown
Delaware Avenue between Castor Avenue Lewis Street Monday -
Saturday 8am to 6pm

West
51st Street Grays Avenue Monday - Saturday 8am to 6pm

South, Southwest
3033 South 63rd Street (near Passyunk Avenue) Monday . Saturday 8am
to 6pm

or your local city Recreation Centers may have bins.
