Hi bpbiszkopt

I'm sorry that I didn't know about Local Player 3rd party plugin, now
that I reread your questions (on previous page) I see you mention Local
Player at the beginning.

BTW, I just wish to mention that the proposed Squeezelite-X solution is
now being worked on in a Linxu version. Please see if this works for you
(it gives you a great UI):

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] 'Official' docker container for LMS?

2022-11-24 Thread cfuttrup

Hi bpbiszkopt

LMS is a server. You need a client (a music player).
LMS does not “play music”, it just collects music, and manages its stock
and access, and distributes them to the actual music players (the
“renderers”).
The client receives the music from LMS and sends it wherever you want
to, e.g. to the USB port on your PC (if the USB port is identified as a
sound device).
Since Squeezelite-X isn't supported in Ubuntu, I don't know what other
software you can use, sorry I'm not that well versed in Linux systems.
Would you be able to use e.g. VLC? I don't know. Hopefully someone can
help you how to set it up.

Cheers,
Claus

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] 'Official' docker container for LMS?

2022-11-21 Thread cfuttrup

Hi bpbiszkopt

Presumably, when running LMS in a Docker container, you have it
installed on a NAS (e.g. Synology, QNAP)

Are you trying to run LMS on a PC and stream music directly from LMS to
a USB port on the PC?

Not sure what EDO Player is, but I know that the Squeezebox Touch can be
installed with EDO kernel extension for 192 kHz support on the USB
port.

If you are using a piCorePlayer, then:

Select [Squeezelite Settings] > “Audio output device settings” > “USB
audio”.
Click [Save].
This will set “Audio output device settings” to “USB audio” and set
“Change Squeezelite settings” to default values.

See more here (Topping E30 is just an example):
https://docs.picoreplayer.org/projects/add-topping-e30-usb-dac/

Kind regards,
Claus

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Power to the piCorePlayer

2021-02-20 Thread cfuttrup

Thank you all of you. Highly appreciated feedback.

I found Semtech EZ1585 should work for reaching 5 Volt out, but yeah, I
have no idea about electronics and more modifications will probably be
required. I'll try to find the old papers with the circuit diagram, etc.
Only god knows where they are. The PSU was purchased in 2009. Knowing
me, the papers are somewhere, I didn't throw any of it away...

I also looked at Mouser and found Texas Instruments LM1084 (which could
work with input voltage up to 25 Volt), but I'm dangerous around
electronics since I don't know if these regulators (or whatever they
are) are compatible.

Strebor56, you're probaly right. I'm just trying to use something I
already have, and the target is to be able to feed more than the
standard 3 Ampere into an USB-port. How about 4.8 Ampere like the EZ1585
can deliver (= 24 Watt). I'm considering to feed it to the GPIO pins
directly and bypass the USB chipset on the Pi. If 24 Watt doesn't make
my Raspberry Pi happy, then nothing will.

The regulator is a Simtech Corp. EZ1085ACT, the print on the chip says:

Please let me know if you have any tips on what regulator could replace
this one to obtain ca. 5 Volt.

P.S. My house is grounded and the cable and the socket on the power
supply, but I see that 'ground' ends in a blind spot on the PCB.
The device is grounded, and it's grounded all the way to my wall socket

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Power to the piCorePlayer

2021-02-14 Thread cfuttrup

I hope to wake-up this old thread and find someone who can guide me a
bit.

The Raspberry Pi I have seems to be near its last days of living. Maybe
a bit early to conclude, but I get the yellow lightning bolt, and the
device reboots every now and then, seemlingly more and more often and I
can't seem to feed it enough power. I'm about ready to try a solid piece
of linear power supply. In fact I already have one, but it's made for
the Squeezebox Duet and with about 9 Volt of output. Is there a kind
soul in this forum, who has a bit of electronics skill and who could
help me exchange the transformer to convert it to 5 Volt output?

Here's a picture of the power supply (with 47.000 uF capacitors):
https://www.cfuttrup.com/duet/WLabs_PCB_small.jpg
And for completeness here's the HTML page about the PSU:
https://www.cfuttrup.com/streamingaudio.html#hardwareupgrade

>From the picture I gather this is a 229C16 transformer, and it looks
like it can be connected either to 115 Volt or 230 Volt depending on how
it's mounted on the PCB, and that each give about 8 Volt output. I have
no idea how this becomes 9 Volt. I don't know much about this, but
presumably the C16 means it's a C-core (?) and 16 = 2 * 8 Volt, and for
an equivalent 5 Volt output, I should look for something called 229C9
... ?

Today I retrieved the SD-card and installed piCorePlayer 6.1.0 on it.
The player is back to working with the ApplePi DAC HAT board. I conclude

P.S. My old trouble with the yellow lightning bolt is not resovled. As
mentioned before, it might be the PSU that's not powerful enough

while the device was disassembled I made sure that some contacts were
pulled and pushed (aka cleaned a bit) and that didn't do the trick. This

[SlimDevices: Unix] Lost sound after upgrading to pCP 7

2021-01-28 Thread cfuttrup

Hi there

Today I in-situ updated pCP from 6.1.0 to 7.0.0. Problem: My sound
disappeared.

piCorePlayer | piCorePlayer v7.0.0 | www v00011 | linux
5.4.83-pcpCore-v7 | piCore v12.0pCP | Squeezelite v1.9.8-1287-pCP
This is running on a Raspberry Pi3 B+ with an ApplePi HAT DAC.
Wifi is disabled (using Ethernet only), Bluetooth is obviously then also
disabled.
Last I know HDMI was also disabled, but now I can't find a menu to
check.

Here's the pcp_insitu_upgrade.log:
Fixing any issues after insitu update Done.
Starting piCorePlayer v7.0.0 startup...
Starting rngd using /dev/hwrng... Done.
Checking for boot files on mmcblk0p1...
Trying to mount /dev/mmcblk0p1.

newpcp.cfg found on mmcblk0p1.

Setting Screen Rotation... Done.
Removing old kernel modules extensions... Done.
Removing old pcp www extensions... Done.
Saving a copy of the upgrade log to
/mnt/mmcblk0p2/tce/pcp_insitu_upgrade.log ...

Generally my attention span is too short to look through the very
lengthy log files.
Let me know if I should look into a specific file for something
specific.

I noticed that on reboot after the update an error said that pCP-bt6.tgz
failed to update.
If I look in "Extensions" and try to manually install the file, then I
am told it already exist.
My sense is that this 'blurp' doesn't matter and the system is fine.
The BT Controller is Off. Since I'm not using Bluetooth - should I try
to REMOVE it entirely?

Squeezelite is running, running Standard Squeezelite Binary.
My audio device: hw:CARD=ApplePiDAC
I updated to: hw:CARD=ApplePiDAC,DEV=0
I tried: sysdefault:CARD=ApplePiDAC and reverted back to the previous
one.
None of these bring the sound back.
Volume is at 100%.
The system is finding my music library just fine, and seems to work with
the RadioParadize LMS plugin as well.
LMS is running on a Synology NAS.

ALSA settings were: 80 - 4 - blank - 1 - blank
I changed to: 80 - blank - blank - 1 - blank ... I think this is what I
original had. No difference.

I am forcing upsampling by setting
Max sample rate: 88200,96000,176400,192000
Upsample settings: v::3.5:28:95:100:45

I don't know if the problem is that SoX isn't properly loaded ?? (Why
wouldn't it be)

In pCP 6.1.0 I had (AFAIR) access to the ALSA Mixer, but "Card Control"
gives me nothing now,
so I assume it's good, but it could be that the default is the Headphone
jack.

In /proc/asound I find:
lrwxrwxrwx1 root root 5 Jan 28 17:26 ApplePiDAC ->
card0
lrwxrwxrwx1 root root 5 Jan 28 17:26 Headphones ->
card1

I tried to plug a pair of headphones into the Raspberry Pi analog
output. No sound.
I suppose setting DEV=0 means use card0 for output (?).

Here's the tail end of DMESG - I'm a bit startled by the 8-channel audio
card, AFAIK I have 2-ch stereo:

[SlimDevices: Unix] Power to the piCorePlayer

2020-11-18 Thread cfuttrup

Hi there

I have a setup with Raspberry Pi3+, mounted with the ApplePi DAC (no
longer available).

My problem is that I have a yellow lightning-bolt, and during boot
process I get a 'under-voltage' error.

Wifi and Bluetooth + HDMI is disabled to reduce the power requirement,
and I'm using standard settings (not overclocking, almost rather the
opposite).

I know the ApplePi requires quite some juice. Therefore it is default
delivered with a powerful 5.25 Volt and 3 Ampere PSU. Like this one:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01HB44IE6/

I think my problem is the cable. It cannot be replaced on this
particular PSU. Does anyone know of another one which can deliver about
16 Watt?

Ideally one where I can decide what USB cable I use (replaceable), and
I'd like one with 20 AWG wire inside for the power-line. Like this one:

https://www.amazon.de/-/en/Original-G4-G3-G2-High-20-AWG-Charger-Retail/dp/B01KI4LYFM/

... Unfortunately this reseller doesn't ship to Norway or Denmark.

P.S. I did a thermal image on the DAC-board and the temperature is 43
deg Celsius ... the developer and I agree, that's low, and there's
nothing on the board that is near dead and causing unusual power draw.

I really think it's that darn cable, or maybe just the connector - maybe
some contact cleaner could solve the problem. Anyone else have such
problems, and how did you solve it?

Any comment is highly appreciated. Thanks.

Best regards,
Claus

I'm not in the development team, but in general they prioritize small
rather than features, because it tends towards bloatware. You give it a
fingertip, and it ends up ripping your arm off.

In the days of Gigabyte and fullfat GUI's it's impressive that
piCorePlayer is a fully functional OS + more, which fits on a 64 MB
SD-card. Users are encouraged to add whatever modules they would like to
have (and their dependencies).

+1 on this, although mine's only been running since end of 2018.

It's comforting if the write intensive part is placed on a drive (not
the SD-card used for booting) and I've mentioned in the past that some
failover procedure in case of a drive failure would be a cool added
feature.

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] piCorePlayer 6.x.x - Bluetooth

2020-06-20 Thread cfuttrup

Hi paul

Not sure what was wrong in my setup. Today I decided to play some
YouTube video and the PC automatically connected to piCorePlayer, and I
noticed that the volume on the PC was muted. I swear that wasn't the
case before, I checked several times and turned the volume up/down, but
today it was muted. It might have been that something around volume
control didn't work ... (?)

I enjoy very much that piCorePlayer switches seamlessly between sources.
I'm very happy that I can watch e.g. Physics Lectures by Walter Lewin on
my PC and have the sound go through my stereo (instead of the bad sound
from a PC).

P.S. I also noticed that I can turn the PC-volume up/down and it doesn't
change the output at all. It seems as if the Bluetooth driver always
transmits the full signal at full digital level, which I guess is good,
and I just have to adjust the volume on my amplifier. The only thing
that can be changed with the PC volume control is muting the signal
entirely.

Cheers,
Claus

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] piCorePlayer 6.x.x - Bluetooth

2020-06-16 Thread cfuttrup

This was my second attempt at getting this bluetooth up and running. I
updated the installation (bluez was the only one that updated,
everything else was OK).

I had one bump on the road, maybe if you're savvy, then you know, but I
didn't. The bump was that you must turn WiFi on to use Bluetooth.
Turning Bluetooth on but keeping Wifi off will not work, at least not on
my Pi. I kept getting the message "No default controller available" ...
and I couldn't turn on the BT Controller.

P.S. I'm using the "Player" side such that I stream sound from my laptop
or phone to the piCorePlayer and the sound comes through my stereo.

Yesterday I was impressed how apparently the source could automatically
switch from one to another (between LMS, phone and computer).

Today when I was playing music (through LMS on my NAS), the playlist
ended and I noticed my laptop was already connected, but when playing a
YouTube video, no sound. All volume controls were up, on the
piCorePlayer (obviously), on my amplifier (obviously), on the PC, in the
LMS (although irrelevant) and in the YouTube window. I could see that
the laptop was connected and piCorePlayer was the "Player" as it should
be. I have no idea where the volume went.

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Jivelite for piCorePlayer

2020-02-09 Thread cfuttrup

Today Jivelite froze this morning at 4:45 - as it sometimes does (at
different times). I did as usual, I unplug at the wall, reboot. This
time piCorePlayer gave me the following message (same as in #1003 in
this thread a few pages back):

Starting Jivelite...There is a problem with the Jivelite installation.
Please remove and reinstall Jivelite.

I didn't do this, I just rebooted piCorePlayer from the web-interface
and Jivelite came back up. I wonder if anyone has found the root cause
of this problem? (first problem being that it freezes from time to time,
but second problem that it wouldn't start) ... is it just that I've used
an old SD-card (that I've found in a drawer) and it's either just a slow
one, or maybe near end-of-life?

Best regards,
Claus

Hi Chip

I loaded the piCorePlayer web interface and on the MAIN page I checked
EXTENSIONS. I then changed from the Information tab to the tab named
Available. Here you can see what packages are available.

The package for LVM is not available in the piCorePlayer repository, nor
did I find it in the piCore repo. Therefore my best tip is to check the
tinyCore forum, but be warned this probably requires some Linux
knowledge to incorporate. I found this:

Hi Craig

In "Advanced" mode on the "Main Page" of the piCorePlayer web-GUI you
have the option: Extensions
Press that Extensions button - and you're presented with the first tab =

Click "Available" tab and there's a list of available extensions that

Hi Carsten

I hope you get a proper esponse from a developer. This is just my 10
cents, as a user.

I think that your chance of other file system support in piCorePlayer is
close to zero because piCorePlayer is meant to be a minimal system.

piCore is based on Tiny Core and you might be able to implement HFS+
support if you do the legwork yourself:

http://forum.tinycorelinux.net/index.php?topic=12621.0

Other option is to have your Macbook support the piCorePlayer file
format (EXT4 ?). IMHO this would be a much better solution for you.

I've had success with the DesignSpark case and a Dremel tool. Please

Hi there

Is there a way, e..g in the Jivelite GUI, that I could read out the
sample rate and possibly also the bit depth that piCorePlayer is
currently feeding to the I2S DAC (i.e. = the device that I have
configured in Squeezelite as my player) ?

P.S. I also have Squeezelite-X installed, and working, on my PC.
Currently with the Material skin. Don't know if it's maybe easier to
have the information shown here in this GUI instead? I don't care where
to read it, so long as I could please have it presented somewhere.

The reason? ... I'm playing with upsampling. I am convinced that I can
hear differences, but it would be nice to verify that the changes I'm
playing with are actually effective and that I'm not just fooling myself
(e.g. some psychoacoustic effect).

ipv6 is 311 kb, whereas iptables is 307 kb. I first expanded the SD card
to 100 Mb, leaving 51 Mb free, then to 200 Mb (it's a 1 GB card). Free
space is now 142 Mb. It's impossible that I'm short of space. It seems
the files are downloaded to another partition, and this partition is too
small, maybe a RAM disk partition (?).

Next - i changed to the piCorePlayer repository, and the correct file
was downloaded.

Hi Paul

Thanks. i see the "Extensions" button now - when going from Normal to
Advanced ... and the need to resize first :-). I have to say it's really
nice to use piCorePlayer. It's quite an amazing piece of software.

Cheers,

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] piCorePlayer: security

2019-01-06 Thread cfuttrup

Hi Paul

My understanding is that iptables is not installed in a default
piCorePlayer, so I need to install it first. I understand that Tiny Core
has the following modules ready to install:

http://tinycorelinux.net/9.x/armv6/tcz/

... but exactly how does one install such packages in piCorePlayer ...
can I through the web interface execute some commands and they will be
downloaded and installed? - or do I have to find these packages
elsewhere?

P.S. I think it is wise to let all traffic go through the firewall for a
start (i.e. start with iptables being wide open), then I can assess
later what's allowed and what's blocked. I'm just being careful.

Cheers,
Claus

I have just picked someones recommendations for a start - to allow
"everything" ... I haven't actually configured iptables yet, because it
isn't installed on my piCorePlayer yet.

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] piCorePlayer: security

2019-01-05 Thread cfuttrup

Sorry to bring this to the surface again. Can anyone offer help how to
install iptables?

Presumably it's available as a package from Tiny Core -> piCore. Is
there a simple command that installs iptables?

Next about the configuration, I'm far from an expert, never done this
before. Would this make sense?

>
> # Allow any connection from this host.
> iptables -A INPUT -i lo -j ACCEPT
> # Allow any connection from the local network.
> iptables -A INPUT -s 192.168.1.0/24 -j ACCEPT
> # Allow all broadcast traffic.
> iptables -A INPUT -m pkttype --pkt-type broadcast -j ACCEPT
>

Will such an installation be erased when updating piCorePlayer ...
meaning I'll have to reinstall ?

Just FYI, I see no detailed mixer setup or anything like that with the
ApplePi DAC (and the add-on Volume-Clocker boad is completely
transparent to the setup).

Thank you very much!

Just a thought - what would it take for ApplePi DAC to be supported in
piCorePlayer without the work-around?

Hi DJanGo - you have many good points (I only quote one line in your
response above). IOT are potential targets and in these times, we should
think how to reduce the risk in a product like piCorePlayer.

Hi d6jg

Internal only ... is that something I'd do with iptables?

Is iptables already there on the piCorePlayer, and do I have to edit a
text file on the system, to accomplish this?

Sorry for really not knowing much about this. I ask because I'm afraid
I'll do something wrong and/or stupid, like for example make it
impossible for the Tiny Core Linux to fetch packages and stay
up-to-date.

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] piCorePlayer: security

2018-12-21 Thread cfuttrup

I'm intersted in this topic. Just installed a RPi w. piCorePlayer +
JiveLite on my network.

Bluetooth and WiFi is disabled, only using Ethernet. I changed the
password for tc (tiny-core, I hope it was saved).

Is there some way in which a hacker could potentially get access to tc
and manipulate the system to serve a hackers purpose?

Just wondering.

Also I wonder if piCorePlayer could be setup to accept interaction with
a specific IP address only (my NAS running LMS has fixed IP) and/or MAC
address?

Cheers,
Claus

Hi there
I purchased an ApplePi, and I thought piCorePlayer supported it
(somewhere I read it did), but with the system up and running now
(without the DAC board), I cannot see that ApplePi is supported.
