Sorry Andre ,
Having initially noticed your caveat about super intelligence, I decided not to
write about the pigeons but the next day I'd forgotten that and I wrote it.

Anyway I think people who do not understand pigeon behaviour and might take
your ideas too seriously should be glad of your explanation.

Your answer just shows that you are much funnier than I realized!
Hope we don't get a tutorial from Dan explaining how to programme pigeons!

Re: how the internet works : the official explanation

2006-07-06 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
The pigeon - airplane metaphore was certainly well contrived by Andre but care
should be taken in copying it literally (n.b. Peter and Dan).

Pigeons CANNOT make round trips or even deliver outgoing messages!
If you want one to carry a message you must first take the bird to the
starting point (probably by plane), attach the message and then send it home
(hence the name 'homing pigeon').
That is: only the owner of the pigeon can receive a message carried by it and
if they try to send OUT a message the bird will
just fly in circles with it around their own house!

Internet-wise this would be like taking a blank message by hand, or snailmail,
to a friend and waiting for them fill it in and send it back by email!

As for the Senators discorse I can only add the Italian Parliament Member's
declaration that "internet should be taught in schools", whatever that means,
anyway most teachers would probably have to learn from the students!

"Every Government should carry a Health Warning"

OK, I'm rambling again.
Thanks for all the kind answers to my first 'ramblings'

A Newbie's ramblings.

2006-07-03 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
May I chip in?
I have just finished my trial period of Media. Seems to be what I have been
looking for since Hypercard days. However, I am a bit put-off buying by the
several posts on this list about bugs in the latest version. Have they or will
they all be sorted out soon?

The lack of internet deployment for stacks is a pity. I had already made plans
for world wide distribution of the "killer ap" I nearly completed before the
trial ran out! ;-)
By the way: Hyperstudio can put stacks on the web and viewers can even modify
them on line in the browser! At least so they say. But then I am neither a
teacher nor a student nor a child.

As for the List itself. Isn't the PC/Mac controversy ever going to drop out of
places like this? I have room on my desk for both as well as a Penquin box.
Revolution is a product that knocks down the barricades, let's try not to
rebuild them!
Maybe people who cite dubious data about Marketing Shares might like to
contemplate the following:
"Statistics are like bikinis, what they show is interesting but what they hide
is essential!".

Anyway thanks for the many good tips.
Hoping to join you very soon.

Re: Reliability of background FTPing

Jim,

The question is not about checking whether or not the file was transferred
correctly. I'm already
comparing the sizes before and after. The question is about reliability and
predictability. Is there any
reason to expect differences in foreground vs background ftp'ing?

Thanks.

You did not say what operating system you are using.

If Rev only solution, try using one of the following or both approaches:

if there is a file (path and filename) ..dnld began
if there is a file (url binary:/path and filename) .. upload began

set the defaultfolder to (path)
put the detailed files into fileList
--check item 5 of the line of the file you want to track for size change.

Perhaps getting the file size on the ftp server would allow size check

A different approach is to set the log field of the process and monitor the

use libUrlSetLogField, making careful note of the syntax required

Intel native on Mac

2006-04-14 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I just got an Intel Mac and was wondering if Rev 2.7 is Intel native yet
(i.e. "Universal")? I checked the web page and couldn't tell for sure.

If it isn't Universal, when a Universal version projected to be available?
And, more importantly, can anyone tell me how well (fast) it works under

Re: Making the move...

2006-03-14 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Dan,

Thank you for your response. The main thrust of my apps are as
desktop apps, both LAN and WAN. However, there is an increasing
interest in being able to select some artworks and on the desktop app
and push the date to a web app for general viewing.

So I anticipate that the web apps would be VERY simple, and it might
even be possible to push the date into something like PHP-Fusion or
Joomla! There's no need to reinvent the wheel.

I have glimpsed at the "pickaxe" book on Ruby, and while it looks
like a very elegant language, it sure is DEEP.

I have ordered your book, by the way, and look forward to getting my
hands on it.

Pardon me for jumping in here but I just went through a fairly

Web applications in the sense Ruby on Rails defines them cannot be
written
in Revolution. You *can* write CGIs and deploy stacks on servers
and Web
servers but there is, e.g., no Revolution plugin that would allow
you to
deploy a Rev app on a Web server so that a Firefox user could
access it.

You can, however, develop what are called Desktop Web Appliances (see
http://www.daniels-mara.com/WebAppliances.htm) using Rev quite
nicely. And

with Altuit's amazingly powerful altBrowser (
http://www.altuit.com/webs/altuit2/altBrowserCover/default.htm),
you can
create custom browsers that embed the behavior of Firefox and/or IE
on OS X
and Windows, respectively. And creating Web-aware Rev apps is
really a piece

of cake.

So if you just need an app to be able to deal with the Internet/
Web, Rev is
perfect. If, OTOH, you really need or want to build apps that
reside on the
Web and can be accessed out of standard Web browsers, then Rev
won't work.
In that case, Ruby on Rails is the best tool for creating such apps
as I've
seen but be forewarned: it's deceptively easy to do simple stuff in
RoR but
I found it dishearteningly difficult to use it to create anything
real even

after spending a lot of time, energy and money (see
http://www.danshafer.com/onemind/?q=node/43).

As for REALBasic vs. Revolution, Johnathan Lynch is basically right on
target with his comments. I'd add one more: unless you already know
BASIC
syntax and/or have some familiarity with a Visual Basic-type
environment,
Real isn't going to be very easy to learn or use. And as far as I
can tell,

database stuff is far more mature and accessible in Rev than in Real.

Wally,

Thanks for your input. Like you, I am not a developer by training.
I have a few different solutions, written in Filemaker, which target
mostly Art and Antique galleries. I have been wondering about
picking up RealBasic, which looks nice, but not quite as intuitive as
Revolution. So I imagine that it will take me little longer to
become productive in RB than in Revolution. I also wonder whether
once the learning curve has been conquered, whether Revolution would
still be faster than RB. I have a feeling that it would be...

Thanks,

perspective on Rev. I own a post-production finishing house for

I did a very small amount of HyperCard programming back in '91-'93
and have put together a few filemaker pro databases, but basically
have no experience as a programmer.

The fact that the program can switch from "programming" mode to
"run" mode while you work makes it very easy and quick to see what
you're going to get.

Using Revolution I have been able to:

1. Automate our web page generation for client feedback. This is a
relatively complex setup that reads movies placed in various
folders on our webserver and with some user input, generates
password-protected php web pages that look every bit as good as
others out there.

2. Created a touch-screen interface for iTunes to run on a
powerbook in my car.

3. Created a slate generator (slates are the identifiers used in
commercials). This program combines some background image with text
to create sequential countdowns for our video projects. It runs on
XP and OSX. In the month or so it's been running it has generated
over 2000 images!

I'm in the process of building a home-control application that acts
as a client to iRed (an infrared remote server). The cool thing
about this app is that it's allowed me to rescue a couple of old
machines to use as controllers. The standalone client currently
runs on OS9, XP tablet edition and OSX. This in itself is pretty
amazing.

All of this while doing the rest of my work and without looking
back. I strongly recommend the product.

Two things, start with v 2.6.1, (especially if you're going to be
developing on windows) and I understand that there is a deal where
you get Constellation for free. It's worth the $50 it costs anyway,
but free is soo much better! :-)

So I find that it's the easiest way to write code that can actually
do something without having to lear a complex and cryptic language.

solutions was updating records, demo videos weren't displaying, to
mention a few.

So the quesiton is, how good of an environment to work on is it?

And how stable are the final applications?

For users who have used Rev for databases, I was wondering what
it's like to develop a system with, say, 20 tables and lots or
relationships and methods?

Where would one store all the methods?

For relationships, would one just keep a VERYlong list of Database

Finally, does any one know if Runtime Revolution Ltd has any plans

RE: developing win32 externals...

2005-08-22 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Andre,

One of the things to watch for is whether you're using any binary libraries
(static or dynamic) in your code that were built by someone else. If the
libraries were built with visual studio and you try to link them with
bloodshed you'll get linker errors. (in particular, I've had this problem
with some mysql and imagemagick libs)

If you're just building code you've compiled I highly recommend the
bloodshed ide for mingw/gcc, its the only environment besides vs where i've
ever been able to get the debugger to work correctly with rev.

Hi Folks,

I am now trying to build some externals for both mac and win32
machines. I plan to use XCode on the mac side but on the win32 side I
have no clue. I'd like not to use Visual Studio, it's too bloated for
my modest machine. I'd settle for DJGPP or Cygwin or whatever... If I
could cross compile in XCode or GCC then it would be marvelous. Can
someone shed a light here?

Dan,
 Why not a capitalist/capitalist model:
1. Developer or users suggest a tool/product & define specs.
2. One or more developers bid to create the tool/product per spec. at a
specific price
3. "Investors" provide the money and get "ownership" based on the
percentage they contributed
4. When the tool/product is finished all the investors get free copies
5. As the finished tool/product is sold, profits are divided among the
investors.

We are actually doing this now - except the developer and investor are
usually the same person.

You might also want to include "lock cursor" so that it will not reset.

If you do not use "lock cursor", the cursor will change for a very short time
(so short you might not notice the change at all!). Locking the cursor will
make a difference and give persistence to the object.

You will need to think about cursor changes inside different objects. So
consider what will happen "on enterfield", etc.

Re: Crashing during printing

> What happens if you use Preview of Print to PDF instead of actually
> printing? Does that crash too?

Yup.. Clicking any 3 of the buttons in the print window (Preview, Save PDF,
Print) all result in
129 pages being "Processed" and then a crash (Do you want to submit this to
Apple).. RunRev
2.0.3 made it to 130 pages ;-)

I need to be able to print anywhere from 1 page documents to 1000-plus
documents.. It's a
niche tool custom written for the company I work for, but if I can't print from
RunRev I'll have to
look at other environments to program in for this (which is too bad because the
other tools are
in RunRev and I was hoping to just convert this into a plugin for the main
program)..

> I think Chipp's solution of printing in batches would be the best

Not in this situation.. I did re-write the code to batch the print in 100's but
everytime I had the
print dialog appear, not too good for something that's supposed to be
automated..

I've created a stack is used to create multi-page documents (hundreds and

whenever I try to print it makes it up to "Processing Page: 129" and then
crashes. This is
happening in standalones, as well as in the IDE (stopped and running).

Anyone else having problems printing huge documents? Each card is one 8.5x11

WTF! An error with my comments?!

2005-03-17 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I added about 5 lines of code to the smtp library and now runrev refuses to do
anything with it
stating there's an error with the comments (well it looks like the second line
of the stack script
irregardless of what's there).

Here's the error from the error dialog
executing at 7:50:05 PM
TypeObject Name:
Object libSmtp250
Line# File Name .: libSmtp
Hint2

The stack script window closes fine (no errors) and it can be compiled into an
application (but
even the application doesn't work).

Now, before the changes the file was opened by double-clicking it and RunRev
2.5.1 opened it,
Quit (no to changes) and deleted 2.5.1. Re-opened in 2.0.3 and proceeded to
make the
additions (some comments, a new script-wide variable one line of code to an
exist handler and
the introduction of a new one-line handler). File was then saved, a button was
added to run
three handlers (2 old handlers and the new one)

on mouseUp
  libSmtpConnect "192.168.0.250"
  answer libSmtpGetGreeting()
  libSmtpClose
end mouseUp

The usual backup wasn't made as this was a simple addition and there shouldn't
be any
problems *sigh*

A new stack was created, the code was copy-pasted into it - same error.
The Rev customPropertySet was deleted - same error.
Code was copy&pasted into TextEdit (no rtf) and back into a new stack - same
error.
Code was copy&pasted into TextEdit (no rtf) and back into the existing stack -
same error.

Other than perhaps typing everything back in, any ideas?

Credit card processing.. more info

2005-01-24 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
We've received a bit more information on this issue of processing a credit
card transaction from within a Rev app, and I'm hoping someone here can
help interpret it. Please shed any light you can. This response comes from
the folks at e-Onlinedata / Authorize.net. Thanks. Richard

Richard,

Take a look at our documentation page
(http://www.authorizenet.com/support/guides.php). I just want to make sure
you are looking at the Card Present (CP) Implementation Guide PDF and not
the AIM guide (which is ecommerce). It tells you in that document that the
URL you POST to is https://cardpresent.authorize.net/gateway/transact.dll.
The data does not need to be encrypted because you are emulating the HTML
form POST using SSL. SSL takes care of the encryption and decryption. You
will be using our digital certificate, so you will not need one for each
kiosk.

The request string looks just like what you would see for a GET method on
an HTML form. Here is some sample code in VBScript. It won't apply to you
but you will get the idea of how to put it together. You will want to use
a device type of 5 and a market type of 2.

' build the request string
vPostData = _
"x_cpversion=1.0" & _
"&x_login=" & Server.URLEncode( x_login ) & _
"&x_tran_key=" & Server.URLEncode( x_tran_key ) & _
"&x_market_type=" & x_market_type & _
"&x_device_type=" & x_device_type & _
"&x_amount=" & x_amount & _
"&x_description=" & Server.URLEncode( merchant_name ) &
_
"&x_response_format=1" & _
"&x_delim_char=" & x_delim_char & _
"&x_test_request=" & x_test_request
Select Case validation_method
Case 2 vPostData = vPostData & "&x_track2=" &
Server.URLEncode( x_track2 )
Case 3 vPostData = vPostData & "&x_card_num=" &
x_card_num & "&x_exp_date=" & x_exp_date
Case Else vPostData = vPostData & "&x_track1=" &
Server.URLEncode( x_track1 )
End Select

' Send data via HTTPS POST to Authorize.net
set objHttp =
Server.CreateObject("WinHttp.WinHttpRequest.5.1")
objHttp.open "POST", auth_net_url, False
objHttp.SetRequestHeader "Content-Type",
"application/x-www-form-urlencoded"
objHttp.send (vPostData)

If( objHttp.Status = "200" ) Then
' we communicated with web server successfully so now
process the response
vResponseText = objHttp.responseText

' Tokenize response . Separator is x_delim_char
vFieldArray = Split( vResponseText, x_delim_char, -1, 1
)
    vNumFields = Ubound(vFieldArray)
...

Let me know if I you get stuck again.

Thanks,
Keith

Keith,

Thanks for getting back to me on this. It's been frustrating trying to get
an answer to this question. Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated.

We are running on Mac OS X. We have no problem emulating the HTML form
POST. The programming environment we are working in allows for that. The
problem is in opening the secure connection to AIM. Perhaps you can walk me
through this. Here's the situation.

1. We have a laptop somewhere in the field.

2. The only program available on this machine is a custom application
(there's no browser available).

3. We collect the card data and organize that data into an appropriate
POST.

4. What happens next? Where is that data sent? What's the address? How do
we create a secure connection? How do we encrypt that data? This is where
we're stuck.

Thanks
Richard

browser. But it's realy very very slow to launch it. It can take about 3
minutes on Windows, and a little bit less on Mac.
Is there any way to speed up that process ( no one will wait for that time
after a clik) ? Or maybe do you know another way wich would be more
appropriated ?

Thanks for your help,

Cordialy

Anyone using Unicode should switch to 2.5 where all reported Unicode problems
were resolved. If you store the text in fields, they are byteswapped
automatically. You will have to write your own script to do the byteswapping
when reading from files.

My guess is that your price uses comma as decimal separator whereas
Rev expects it to be a period. If your field should display commas
per country convention change

put length(field "myFld") * field "price" into fld "devis"

to

get fld "price"
replace "," with "." in it
put length(field "myFld") * it into fld "devis"

My code :

on mouseUp

put the value of field "price" into MyNum
put MyChar * MyNum into field "devis"
end mouseUp

it returns an error in the right operand while the structure seems bascily logical

QT effects

2004-10-27 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
First of all, thanx for your precious answers about my previous questions about PDF
and mail

I've noticed that on a PC cd-rom generated using rev, the visual dissolve effect is
not correctly
displayed (the cards are simply displayed without any transition) while QT is
correctly installed
on the PC thing (rev correctly plays simple videos for example). The "don't use
QTeffects"
command would allow a correct display but it makes the mac version crash.

A simple solution is to make two versions of the player but i tought it could be
important to
notice that "bug" (but is it realy one ?).

Not really. If you have been working on a project, and have been waiting to get this
and that feature into the engine, require a fix, or need an external, I suppose you
can pay for it now and subcontract rev, so it actually gives you more options...and
the ability to do this may actually make it easier to sell a rev solution to potential
clients. I don't see Rev saying that they are only doing engine customizations for
their large projects. Looks like they are just trying to capatalize on what they have
to maintain and pay for already.

v2 on the other hand can be of vary size depending on the information

Re: unicode menus

>1. How did you make cascading menus in unicode?
Easiest way to do it would be to create a field, set the tabstops property, then start
typing japanese into it. Then set then textfont of the button to a japanese font and
set the text of the btn to the unicodetext of the field.

>2. How did you handle the File/Edit menus in unicode in OS X?
The last two items of the file menu (rather the first menu) will be deleted regardless
in OSX, so it should be a divider and quit. For the edit button it looks at the
buttons name and if the name is "edit" it delete the last two items of that menu as
well. If you need the edit menu to display the title in japanese, set the label of the
button.

Last time I checked creating submenus worked fine in the IDE.

Note you can also edit the script of btn "revdatabase" of stack "revlibrary" and use
additional wrapper functions around revdb. They are pretty well organized and tested
just underdocumented, and let you do things like execute statements using an opened

re: inheritance

2004-09-12 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

This reminds me of a rehash of the the C vs C++ debate on the carbon-list
currently. You can technically do anything you can do in C++ with C. I recently

had to work on a VB.NET project and it was a bit different then the VB I
remember, was it better, not really, some things were actually more confusing
just different. Some VB developers feel abandoned.. I find working in Rev more
productive for GUI apps then working in C++, or Java, you get immediate
results.

Should advancing the language and integrating OOP features be a goal,
definitely. It useful for large projects which involve multiple developers,
which are not currently Rev forte, but it may be the chicken and egg sort of
thing. But I don't see a feature request or a suggested spec for it anywhere...

Implementing it however, should not come at expense of implementing features
that are some blockers for projects and there is still a lot of design work
which needs to be done. From our recent debates on the improve list it seems
that people don't want real OO necessarily, but some sort of inheritance and the

ability to *reuse controls* or scripts. Parentscripts, or a backscript which
distinguishes between objects by properties, should get you most of that.

problems with "send" and macosx .3.3

2004-05-18 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
i'm developing a program in runrev 2.1 on macosx .3.3 (aka panther) and
have noticed something weird when using the send command..

i have a multi-user network-enabled intranet program, and during the
testing of the login/password everything went smoothly until i decided
to use someone else's login/password combo..

all the information is being sent from the client to the server and is
completely intact before the "send" command (the actually send command
is being sent with the "do" command do to the complexity of it).. if i
change "do" to "answer" the proper information is there, but in the
receiving handler the "answer" states "false"..

the receiving handler correctly "answer"s my login/password info, and it
works fine when everyone else's password is the same as mine.. if the
passwords are changed, it stops working..

now the really weird part to all of this is the fact that my password in
the runrev app is base64 encoded and is the same as my macosx login
password.. and!! if i include my password anywhere in the data being
sent for the login/password (ie.. as a dummy parameter) all the other
accounts work..

anyone else see this on macosx? i'll need to burn a copy and try it on
my windows machines at home..

oddly enough they added the feature into the mac versions, but they left
out the windows versions (heck they could have even used my code ;-)

actually i'm not sure how the read command works, nor how the libUrl
stuff works, but there is the ability to byte-request on some http
servers (not certain if it's an enhancement to http or to specific
servers, but i have seen it used in many client-side programs)..

Serious applications

2004-02-25 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi everybody,

thank you very much for your comments.

Well looks that I not choosed the right term, serious applications, but
most of you understood it.

You are right a couple of hours is not enough to decide if Revolution is
the right tool for us.

What I liked in Revolution and spent some time to evalute? the way that
seems it allow create cross platform applications easily.

Learn a new language is not a problem at all. If the time spent learning
allow us to reach the objetive.

What mean serious applications for me? imagine an accounting-billing
solution to be used for 10-100 users in different languages and in
different enviroments. We are talking about hundred thousands or even
millions records in tables. We need a powerful database engine:
PostgreSql or Firebird prefered.

Will give a chance to Revolution :-)

Thanks,
Jose

i'm currently writing a tool to be used at a print shop that allows for
tracking of all the jobs and clients, as well as all the billing,
invoicing and break-down of "cost of doing business".. i've custom built
a protocol to allow for multiple users accessing all the data at the
same time, and am just using rev stacks as the databases.. so far
everything is working smoothly on the mac/windows network..

check out hemmingway, but i have a feeling the majority of large
projects are internal, or still being built..

it can be... ^_^

you're forgetting the "boundary" marker.. (note that the above is all
one line, or two seperate lines with LWS before the word "boundary")

Transcript and/or ECMA

2004-02-16 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
From: Pierre Sahores <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Agreed ! The English-like syntax of Transcript seem me to be one of the
main parts of the XTalk paradigm : As long as Rev will support this VHLL
feature, we will stay able to code transcript handlers, even without
running computers : i like to feel me free to "think and code" cool
handlers in the railroad or, even, in driving my car from home to the
office... I can't, for my own, do, with the same success, such kind of
things in using Rebol, PHP, Javascript or Java...
 Bien cordialement, Pierre Sahores
I fully agree that for trained xtalk writers the english-like syntax of
Transcript is an advantage.

As and old HyperCarder, Transcript is very fine for me too.

But if Revolution want to access to a biggest market share, you must
consider that 98% of people trained to programming are trained to "ECMA"
style langages.

Macromedia understood that and the next version of Director will support
both the Lingo syntax (very xTalk like) and the ECMA (=
javascript/actionscript)syntax.
Note the fact that ECMA syntax is not a proprietary syntax ; it is an open
standard maintained by the European Computer Manufacturer Association.

If Revolution can speak the same langage as JavaScript, Flash (and
tomorrow Director) that can help thousands of programmer to test it and to
adopt it.

Re: SystemWindow editable fields?

2004-02-15 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
does a "systemWindow" receive the "resumeStack" message? if so, try
putting the "topStack" command there.. (can't test for you as it
doesn't work in windows, nor is the "systemWindow" property available in
the version of runrev i run =/
