[ANN] tRev Pre-holiday Update!

2009-12-22 Thread Jerry Daniels

Dear tRev fanciers,

We have just posted a fairly significant pre-holiday update for tRev.
We're making room for the revelation of our Easter Egg feature on
Christmas day. No one has found the egg, btw.

Below you'll see a link to a 4 minute video showing you our new
Transparent Inspection feature. It has a much enhanced UI that does
not require the use of the option key. This, in turn, has freed up the
use of the option key. Details on the page to which this link points:

2009-12-22 Thread Jerry Daniels

tRev users,

Thanks for participating in our Option Key Inspection poll. The
results were extremely helpful in re-doing the workflow for the new
Transparent Inspection feature!

The poll has been removed from the site.

Re: [ANN] Poll for tRev users aka help me free the option key

2009-12-19 Thread Jerry Daniels

Stephen, et al...

This polling system we use have really helped us get the ball in from
the ten yard line. Sometimes I reach a cross-roads with a feature and
need user feedback to be very specific and easy to track. This polling
mechanism has been great for us. I could probably think of another
metaphor to describe it, but I think I'll leave it at that.

I encourage all the tRev users out there to check in and cast their
votes. Help me free the option key and make our inspection features
even more powerful.

2009-12-11 Thread Jerry Daniels

tRev residents and visitors...

Today's video:

http://reveditor.com/feature-friday-manage-your-audio-clips

- New column Clips appears below Cards in Browser when a stack has
audio clips
- Clips can be played/stopped (quick key = p), renamed (r) or deleted

Small changes and enhancements:
- There is a new column button for Stacks, Cards, Controls called

+shift+p)

- Can now turn on/off Snaps view regardless of active column
- Save is no longer a stacks Column Button; now a File menu item (cmd
+s)

Fixes and needed additions:
- Can now print code from the Code Editor (bug fix)
- Can now print object list from the Object Browser's active column
(new!)

- Smooth auto-scrolling when dragging to top or bottom of lists

NOTE:
- Auto-scrolling during drag fixed on Handlers list with initial update
- Stacks, Cards, Clips and controls will be updated for this behavior
this weekend

[ANN] tRev Feature Friday: drag-n-drop handlers and folders!

2009-12-04 Thread Jerry Daniels

Those following the exploits of tRev,

It's another rock 'em / sock 'em Feature Friday!

Now you can...
- Drag and drop folders and handlers in the handler list.
- Edit names of folders and handlers directly in the handler list.
- After editing, folder and handler names are updated in the folder
comment or handler.

- Object Browser columns are resizing properly when empty.
- Column buttons enable/disable properly when columns are empty.
- New preference: Wrap Source Code.

Here's a link to the video:

To all megabundle purchases and that Generic person (get a real name,

This news that buyers of the Megabundle get nothing but a zip file and
a reg code with tRev and tText is not right. Since I have never gotten
a megabundle personally (I'm one of the vendors for it) I was not aware!

I have no idea if this minimalist fulfillment approach has spread to

the case.

Re: tRev

2009-11-30 Thread Sarah Reichelt
The problem is that the folder containing your Rev application has
different names depending on which version of Rev you have. Also, you
may have installed it in various places, and you may have several
versions installed. SO it is next to impossible for tRev to work out
where your Rev application is.

But tRev must know which Rev app to use, since it has to be able to
communicate back to the main Revolution application, whether it is
revEnterprise, revStudio or revMedia.

Anyway, as you have discovered, tRev has to be in EXACTLY the same
folder as the Revolution application you are using, so you have it
know.

For any newcomers to tRev, I strongly recommend going to the
http://reveditor.com/ site and going back through the movies that
Jerry has produced, especially the early ones so you can watch as the
features developed.

Cheers,
Sarah

2009-11-30 Thread Bob Sneidar
I ALMOST sent in an email saying that I had installed tRev in the proper
location, but it still didn't work, until I realized I installed tRev in the
same place as the shortcut/alias. DOH! Still, I agree it ought to be fairly
straightforward for tRev to install itself in the current Revolution folder.
Those with 2 versions should be on their own. :-)

Re: tRev

2009-11-30 Thread stephen barncard
It was clear to me the first time. I read the Jerry's site and I thought the
process was explained perfectly. Anyway, this is an app for developers
not 'users' and one might expect the installation to be a bit more
technical . The installation is a little weird because the way it works is
not like an ordinary application.

There are a limited number of locations Revolution can be installed by
 default.
The idea that you can not iterate through them in reverse order to find the
current default location I prefer to speak in the positive, let's try
 again...

 I believe you should either:
1: Clearly explain your requirements so that the user can move the file for
 you
 or
2: Use logic and your understanding of the normal Revolution installation
process to figure out the installation location.

  where your Rev application is.

But tRev must know which Rev app to use, since it has to be able to
communicate back to the main Revolution application, whether it is
  revEnterprise, revStudio or revMedia.

Anyway, as you have discovered, tRev has to be in EXACTLY the same

Well, when I first ran tRev, it was at /Applications/tRev.app, which is

Well Revolution is installed at /Applications/Revolution\ Enterprise/,

There are links delivered with the reg codes that specifically exhort

[ANN] tRev Feature Friday - drag-n-drop your stacks!

2009-11-27 Thread Jerry Daniels

What's new this Friday in tRev-land?

Watch tRev's new drag-n-drop stacks and check out several very nice
optimizations:

http://reveditor.com/feature-friday-drag-n-drop-stacks-0

Drag-n-drop stacks in Object Browser:
- Make a mainstack a sub stack; make a sub stack a main stack.
- HOW: Just drag-n-drop in tRev's Object Browser!
- Hold down the shift key to make a copy of a stack, also!

New column buttons for the Object Browser:
- There's a new Visible column button for stacks.
- Close column button changes to Delete if you select a sub stack.

A new mode:
- Run tRev in lean-n-mean mode with no headers, footers or tooltips.
- This minimalist mode also offers you more vertical space for code!

Better saving:
- Changes made via the tRev column buttons now mark their stacks as
edited.
- Thus you are prompted to save your stacks in Rev unless you saved
them in tRev.
- Saving from the object browser or the code editor in tRev also does
a better job of

marking main stacks and sub stacks as saved.
- You are not prompted to save stacks when you already have!

Speed in the Object Browser:
- All of tRev's column buttons work much faster.
- They are making far fewer trips back to Rev.
- Many of these operations are over 20 times faster.

Oh, yes...
- Edit your stack names in the browser just like cards and controls.

Check it out:

For your birthday i'm getting a present for me : ttext..!!

Thanks for that brilliant idea and implementation.. and for exemple of how
experience can be valuable and efficient!

Request : that the plugins can be visualized. For instance, to be able to
provide helping plugins with menus to insert elements extending the
possibilites you have provided at the bottom (i'm into structured editing).
maybe an option to make the plugin appear as a drawer on the side of tText?
That's my birthday present!

This can already be done. I just made a simple test plugin that opens
as a palette with a couple of formatting buttons that add tags to the
selected text.
Make a new plugin, and in the doStartup handler, all you need is
palette this stack (or you can make it a drawer I guess).

Then remove the default interface from the plugin window, add your own
interface objects and script them.
Use the examples and the default doStartup handler to work out what to
include in your own handlers.

Re: [ANN] tText and tRev Birthday blow-out

2009-11-24 Thread Jerry Daniels

Robert,

Sarah is right on the money, as usual. You can do a WHOLE LOT with
what we have in the plugin that gets created when you add a plugin.

After launching tText:
1. Open the plugin mgr (cmd+m).
2. Click the Add button (after selecting the radio that indicates
Separator, New or Existing).

3. Click the Open in Rev button to start working on it.
4. You'll be in Rev looking at your new plugin.
5. Click on the Edit button to start coding.

To get Rev to open from tText, you WILL need to have tText at the
same directory level as the version of Rev you want to use.

I should also say that you are right in your comment—about the price

We're a mere two users away from reaching the 25% mark on our goal of

Mikey,

We have a site full of stuff about tRev:
   http://reveditor.com

Good intro video:
   http://reveditor.com/trev-the-movie

Frequently Asked Questions:
   http://reveditor.com/frequently-asked-questions-27

To read all posts about it (everything is a post, btw):
   http://reveditor.com/tag/trev

20 videos about tRev:
   http://reveditor.com/?sort=search=trev+video

Text version:

It's an editor for Revolution, meant to complement it. It runs outside
of the Rev IDE as a separate app. It is a script editor and an object
browser, all in one tabbed window. It's lighter-weight than previous
offerings and, since it has its own application space, runs faster. It
has several innovations not present in our previous editors: raptor
handlers (editable handlers that work like a property editor), decoder
(modeless debugging), built-in definitions, and inline editing of
object names within tRev's object browser. It has many features from
our previous editors: auto-complete (clairvoyance), drag-n-drop
relayering, and handler linking. And it's less expensive.

We have a new video showing new features most every Friday.

Hope that helps.

Best,

Jerry Daniels

[ANN] tRev Feature Friday: drag-n-drop layering; inline editing!

2009-11-20 Thread Jerry Daniels

Fellow Rev-ers,

We have a fine 4 minute video that demonstrates how tRev's Object
Browser will now let you:

- Drag an object in the Object Browser to re-layer it.
- Shift+drag an object to clone and relayer it.
- Double-click an object name in Browser to re-name it.
- BONUS: Set content of a label field WHILE you re-name it!

To edit the name of a control listed in the Object Browser, you need
only double-click on the actual name of the control.

Why doesn't the Revolution application browser support these same
simple, standard features?

The developers of the Rev IDE have to worry about what version of the
engine you're running. This precludes using some of the newer features
like the new drag and drop messages and the formattedTop property--all
of which make allow us to do relayering and inline editing in tRev's
Object Browser.

tRev can run the most recent engine and never worry about the IDE,
since it runs in its own application partition. That means you don't
have to worry about the IDE, either!

All users can update now!

Jerry Daniels

[ANN] Feature Friday: tRev tab management

2009-11-13 Thread Jerry Daniels

Fellow coders,

Today we are having a THREE PART Feature Friday today. We have just
posted part 1:

http://reveditor.com/feature-friday-part-1-better-tab-shortcuts

This part of Feature Friday is the least dramatic. Part 2 will
surprise many folks, and Part 3 has some breakthrough stuff. So, stay
tuned for part 2 3 coming to you this afternoon (or tonight for many).

Meanwhile, here's what what we have in our first installment of
Feature Friday:

Our short cuts for the tRev Tabs are now more in compliance with
established browser behavior and also with Rev's native script editor.
Cmd+t creates a new tab. Cmd+w closes. Please note that the escape key
still works to close tabs and cmd+n still makes new ones, but upon
closing the last tab that is also an Object Browser, tRev switches
back to the wonderful Revolution 4.0

PLUG: If you haven't gotten Rev 4.0 as of yet...I think it's time. A
WONDERFUL release. Good job, guys! Keep it up!!

Best,

Jerry Daniels

Thanks, Troy!

I've just posted some videos about our new text editor: tText. It's a
tabbed text editor with lots of HTML styling ability. It's more for
blogging and commenting than for building sites, etc. But here's the
kicker: it's VERY extensible. And it's EASY to extend. We've got a
great Plugin Manager so you can do ANYTHING you like with your text
and write it all in Revolution. Munge your text and then show it in a
new tab, if you like. I'm excited about this product and the potential
it has for consultants, IT professionals and inventive users.

Re: [ANN] tRev Feature Friday: Snaps!

2009-11-09 Thread Jerry Daniels

Andre,

Thanks, so much for the nice comment! I have to say, my feelings
mirror your own. And I am our pickiest, worst user!!

One of the reasons that tRev is so fun to use has to do with feature
and design control. My motto since May has been:

Time spent designing directly offsets time spent in coding and
support. It also seems to increase customer satisfaction. That also
means I do not implement all the well-meaning suggestions I get. That
part is not easy for me. I like to make people happy immediately. With
my new approach I have to remind myself that if I try to please
everyone or violate the design of tRev, I'll cause problems for all of
us.

We also have a very simple mission statement: 1,000 folks who are
thrilled with our products. We currently have 210 users. We have three
more products coming out before the holidays. Stay tuned.

Best,

Jerry Daniels

In a manner of speaking, tRev does have a message box--Revolution's.
If you type cmd+m (cntl+m on PC) in tRev you are switched to
Revolution and the message box appears.

I do appreciate the sentiment, however.

Re: tRev colorization

2009-10-26 Thread Jerry Daniels

Stephen,

Thanks for you ultra kind words. I should amend them by saying that I
don't always incorporate every suggested feature, change or
enhancement to tRev that comes my way. I do listen and respond,
however, and do not hide behind a database or give pat answers.
Sometimes this approach is not met with enthusiasm. So be it. I do
sleep well at night.

With the above amendment to your question/assertion as to our best-in-
class support, ultimately the market will decide on that, as you know.
Presently, MJ and I are on a mission. We're looking for 1,000 people

Yeah, I know, I got some heat a couple of times for some suggestions, but
somebody has to be the grownup here. Your good Karma spent will serve you
well in the future. And GLX2, although a wonderful soup-to-nuts editor, was
a major sufferer of 'feature bloat'. You tried to put everybody's request in
there.

With the above amendment to your question/assertion as to our best-in-class

Another DM feature: full disclosure. Wow. NOBODY reveals the size of their
client base.

At the end of the day, the product has to work and hold it's own. t-Rev
rocks. Jerry's little secret 'agents' working from the outside and inside
keep things simple and clean in the IDE. Brilliant.

Re: tRev colorization

2009-10-26 Thread Mark Smith
Well, after my one day of actually using tRev, I'll certainly attest
to my delight, despite not liking psychedelic text :), and I've
barely scratched the surface.

One possible bug to report, though - when I click the close button on
the tRev editor, it doesn't close, even though I have keep editor
visible unchecked in the prefs.

No biggie, mind you, since command H hides it like any other app. I'm
on Mac OS 10.4.11 and Rev Enterprise 4.0.

tRev is a wonderful thing, so thanks, Jerry!

Re: tRev colorization

2009-10-26 Thread Jerry Daniels

Mark,

You're entirely welcome. Glad you like tRev. If you find an anomaly,
please email me (je...@reveditor.com) with the details (what led up to
it, what you're running, etc.). I don't want to overstay my welcome on
the Rev list by doing full-fledged support, here.

Briefly...

I couldn't help but notice that you are running Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger).
I have never tested tRev on it. It may be that the app switching
which hides the tRev window is not working on that particular, older
Mac OS. It is working fine on the newer Leopard(s), however.

Re: [ANN] tRev QuickStart Keyboard Shortcuts updated

2009-10-26 Thread Jerry Daniels

Friendly advice givers...

I have lots of thoughts. But I'm learning when to ignore them.

I have used Screensteps since before it came out. I like it. Some
people have told me how much they like Scribd. So, I'll probably keep
using Scribd since Posterous will automatically render my PDFs to it.
LOTS of people use it to do just what I'm doing. I get lots of
response from the web community as a result of using it. PLUS: I just
email the PDF file to Posterous and it's done and it's searchable and
printable.

There are no perfect solutions to a support site or documentation.
They will never make everyone happy. I've done this before a couple
times.

This time around I'm saving my little grey cells for higher leverage
items like clean design, solid architecture and simple code. That is
probably the best form of support I can offer my users—all other
things being equal.

[ANN] tRev Feature Friday: Stats and Plus

2009-10-16 Thread Jerry Daniels

Friends and neighbors,

We have a new tRev Feature Friday video for your viewing pleasure:

   http://reveditor.com/feature-friday-new-stats-feature

It shows the following:

- highly optimized auto-complete that can keep up with fast typists
- more items actually getting auto-completed while you type
- a preference called Plus that increases your white space in the
code editor and object browser
- a new pane in the editor called Stats that tells you 6 things
you'd like to know about your code

Here's a sample of the stats (statistics) we track while you type in
tRev's editor:

current line: 8 starting line number of the selected code

total lines:399 includes everything
total bytes:16,822 (16.4K) includes everything

code lines: 352 excludes comment-only lines and empty lines
comment lines: 30 (9%) includes comments within lines of code

handlers: 18 includes raptor handlers
avg handler:22 linesexcludes comment-only lines and empty lines

folders:6 number of folder comments (made with --)
avg folder:	3 handlers	number of handlers per folder including raptor
handlers

FWIW, GLX2 *does* work on linux, although the tweaks involved were not
trivial. They mainly deal with linux's freedom from specified places
for things like preferences files and such. Given that GLX2 is a
plugin and not a compiled standalone application like tRev, I would
expect that the same sort of tweaks would be necessary but not
sufficient to support linux. It's true that linux users as a rule
require and expect less support, but there's still a significant
development, testing and support effort involved.

Re: [ANN] tRev Feature Friday - modest but meaningful

2009-09-26 Thread Jerry Daniels

Peter,

tRev is not a plugin. It is a standalone app. Switching back and forth
between tRev and Rev is tricky. We still have trouble with it in Vista
(although it's easy to work around). I have never compiled a version
for Linux so I don't know. I really don't have the time to know.
Again, this is economics. This is a big part of how I earn a living. I
can only indulge my curiosity so far. Economics, prosperty, food--
stuff like that.

There are a few code branches for the OS's, but they have mostly to do
with the location of files in relation to the home stack in the app.
It's different in Mac and Vista, of course.

It's good philosophy to have a tool that works on any platform, but at
the moment it would be bad business. I might feel more free to branch
out once we have our target of 1,000 users. We're just getting
started, really.

[ANN] tRev Feature Friday - modest but meaningful

2009-09-25 Thread Jerry Daniels

Well, if it's Friday (and it is here!), it has the potential of being...

FEATURE FRIDAY!

Here's what's new in tRev today:

- Search tRev Support Site via tRev's Help menu
- Definitions expanded with more synonyms
- Select Structure now supports every weird form of IF-THEN-ELSE you
can imagine

- Backspace, return key now dependably set dirty flag
- A couple of cool commands now supported in Raptor Handlers

And, of course, there's a new video:

Re: Need a Slide rule. Was: Two questions about trev

2009-09-21 Thread AcidJazz

Dunbarx ,

I think it's cool! When I first started using rev I thought surely I'm
overlooking something, because they can't possibly expect me to count
characters to figure out where the problem is... Okay, that sentence
makes me sound lazy, but I definitely think there's a need.

Re: Difference between tRev and GLX2?

2009-09-19 Thread Jerry Daniels

Todd,

Runtime Revolution had an upgrade coupon for GLX2ers when the product
was released. It has expired by now.

tRev retail is half the GLX2 license. That's a nice upgrade path.

What if any difference is there between the 2 products? Is there
any kind of reasonable upgrade path for a former GLX license holder?

Thanks,

Jerry discusses the differences between the two and a whole lot more in
this new interview at revJournal we just posted:

[ANN] tRev Feature Friday Video is up!

2009-09-18 Thread Jerry Daniels

Three new features:

- Auto-complete within property (Raptor) handlers!
- Auto-complete custom properties within in any handler!
- Select Structure lets you find the beginning end of any structure

Shortcut for Select Structure is command+(

The topic of folding control structures (or at least finding the
beginning and end of an control structure) was discussed on this list
here two days ago. Here it is today as a new feature in tRev.

Link to the video:

   http://reveditor.com/feature-friday-sept-18-select-structures

A new version of tRev with these features will be available as a
component update later today. I have a little more testing to do.

I will let you know when I'm done testing, and you can get this
update. Look for a post here, on our site or on Twitter.

Congrats on rolling this into your editor.

Glad to see you were able to overcome the performance issue you were
initially concerned about. The final result seems to run as fast as the
script I posted here Tuesday. Rev's speed makes so many things
possible. :) Good work.

On the keyboard shortcut, do you currently use Cmd-) for anything?

When I was adding this to ROSE Tuesday morning I ran the idea by Ken who
also uses that editor, and he was concerned about selecting the text
making it too easy to accidentally delete it. Sure, there's Undo, but
he suggested we implement two different variants of Select Structure,
one which does the selection like BBEdit does, and one which merely
shows the structure visually without altering the selection.

So I've built mine with both, one using an underlying graphic to show
the structure, as well as the simpler version which just selects the text.

If you're using Cmd-( for Select Structure, I would be inclined to use
Cmd-) for Show Structure, unless it conflicts with other keyboard
shortcuts folks might be accustomed to.
