Event Notification

2014-03-26 Thread Gopala Krishnan
Hi,

I have upgraded new cloudstack 4.3 version and try to configured Event
Notification componentContext.xml Rabbit MQ settings but could not find any
file componentContext.xml in cloudstack management files path.
How can we enable this event notification configuration?

Limiting Bandwidth

2014-03-26 Thread Xerex Bueno
I am running ACS 4.3 with Xenserver 6.2 fully patched. When I create a network
offering and specify the bandwidth to be 1Mbps, then create a new network and
VM it doesn’t apply the bandwidth limit. Why is this happening?

Snapshot exceptions on 4.2.1 with NFS and S3

2014-03-26 Thread Thomas O'Dowd
I remember this used to work on Cloudstack 4.2 when I was testing it
with devcloud but with CloudPlatform 4.2.1 and KVM I can't get snapshots
to work.

I've setup a single node using KVM and management server, db and agent.

I can start an instance using a template stored on NFS secondary
storage. If I stop the instance and goto storage, I can see it's disk
and then I can select "take snapshot". This always seems to fail for me
and I'm not sure why.

The error seems to be:
Failed to create snapshot
com.cloud.utils.exception.CloudRuntimeException: Failed to
backup 4d3ea6fa-6902-4037-be67-166e34575ee9 for
disk
/mnt/8a2181f7-86a0-3d7d-a5be-10caa89b3d27/f0615600-d806-486e-bbea-d408de0225e4
to /mnt/e5c41d36-90d2-3d5e-bdbf-8a0140dd330e/snapshots/2/3

/mnt/8a218... is mounted fine if I look at df.
/mnt/e5c41... is not mounted.

If I browse to /mnt, the e5c41... directory (used for mounting) exists.
If I manually mount it, I can see the
directory /mnt/e5c41.../snapshots/2/3 so it exists. If I leave it
mounted and try to take a snapshot again, it fails again with the same
error and again when I check the /mnt/e5c41... directory is not mounted.

As I mentioned above, the NFS server I'm using is actually the same
node. I'm using KVM but I don't think that is causing the issue? I'm
using CentOS 6.4.

If I setup S3 as secondary storage and use NFS as the staging server, I
get the same error. Any hints on what I am doing wrong is greatly
appreciated.

Yes it is supported in new management server installation only, meaning if you
upgrade from an earlier cloudstack version you will have only upgrade path to
xen server 6.1, if you have a new cloud stack management installation then you
can have xen server 6.2 for the compatibility matrix check out the below table.

Re: New to CS, some prep questions

2014-03-26 Thread Antone Heyward
I’d agree with Nux and use VM for management server. This works well and lends
nicely to scaling up and out as needed.

I use compute/storage nodes with glusterfs and shared mount point but this
could be overkill or waste of storage capacity if you don’t want or need the
added redundancy.

2014-03-26 Thread ilya musayev
I'm not KVM expert, but in general, you will have a more descriptive
error in cloudstack MS management-server.log as well as on the KVM host
itself - since you have an agent running there as well.

I assume cloudstack agent is running and you've went trough install docs
that detail KVM installation reasonably well.

One way is to let puppet or whatever decide based on hostname, and pass the
role that way. Or you could look at userdata, but that is hard to change
later.

I agree with Ilya. Please read the documentation first.  Looks like your CentOS
template is not available yet. Fix that problem first before creating an
instance.

VM orchestration, updating Best practices

2014-03-26 Thread X. S.
Hey!

I have several choices to make regarding orchestration of VMs:

- when and where should I assign a role to a template/VM?

- Should I have a Database template, a Webserver template etc? Or should I just
have one basic ubuntu template with chef/puppet installed and pass the role
somehow differently to the VM (how?) so all the rest of the installation is
taken care of by those tools?

- Should I turn on automatic updates in Ubuntu and how often should I create a
new, up to date template?

- is puppet/chef really worth having to change the recipes on every minor new
version and coming up with a recipe every time I want to install something new?
Is there a way of installing security patches etc. automatically but handle new
versions manually via chef or puppet?

- I guess the best way for updates would be to start a new VM with the new
software and one by one move the workload to the updated VMs. On the other hand
this seems not very feasible for the daily updates on the OS level!?

I have been researching this for a few weeks. Maybe you can share a thing or
two before my head explodes...

Thank you!

Jose,

Please kindly read the documentation, we've spent many hours putting it
together and it does explain step by step on how to use templates.

To a second issue you mentioned, CloudStack by design will not track
non-CloudStack deployed VMs, so it will not show up in your dashboard.

Thanks for the response. I actually forgot to include one serve for actual
storage. However, would it be more simplified and easier to just have a the
storage server act also as the CPU/Memory (power) server too? Does CloudStack
have some config ability to claim a server as an HA server (high availability)?

For example (new infrastructure example, based of your vm suggestion too)

Server #1
Purpose: CloudStack Control Panel Install (Management Server)
Qty: 1
VM Machine (one production, one backup/HA)
Cores: about 2-4
2-4GB RAM

Server #2
Purpose: Hypervisors (CPU + Memory + Storage)
Qty: 1 plus 1 for failover (HA)
Dual Hexacore CPUs

This feature can be on their list all they want, it's _extremely_
unlikely it will happen any time soon. Imagine the amount of efort
required to replicate tons of storage and the omnipresent danger of
split-brains... this has DISASTER written all over it, not RECOVERY. :-)

The application needs to be cloud-aware as you say, in most cases this
is actually doable; though of course, some people are stuck with old
technology - they can just live with the risk or adapt to a cloud
environment.

Hi, see below.

Server #1

Purpose: CloudStack Control Panel Install (Management Server)

Qty: 1

Dual Hexacore CPUs

32-64GB RAM

4 x 160GB SAS (RAID10)

This is OVERKILL if you ask me. I'd go with smaller, multiple servers.
I for one have a 2 (for HA) management servers in the form of VMs, 2 GB
RAM each, they're mostly idle, even one would have been enough.

Use this hardware for hypervisors.

Server #2

Purpose: Hypervisors (Memory) (is it better to simply have a singular,
beefed up CPU/Memory Management Server as above or separate from
management

node?)

Qty: 1 or 2, plus 1 for failover

Dual Hexacore CPUs

128GB RAM

2 x 160GB SATA RAID1

Sounds good. Judging by the small HDDs I imagine you are using a
SAN/NAS for storage.

It's better (IMHO) to have multiple management servers, see what I
wrote above.

Server #3

Purpose: Backup Server

Qty: 1

Dual Hexacore CPUs

16GB RAM

12 x 2TB SAS RAID5 or RAID10

Looks perfect for Secondary Storage.

With cloud hosting, what would the difference be between a "cloud vps"
and
"cloud dedicated server"? If I'm not mistaken, they're the same,
except the

allowance for a 'dedicated server' option would be much higher, right?

Never heard of "cloud vps" before.
No matter how you want to call them they are still virtual machines,
these words are just marketing, nothing more. Everyone is free to market
their products as they wish, there is no standard.

Last question: does anyone use this for automated provisioning with
WHMCS or

do you recommend a better software?

Not me.

2014-03-26 Thread Geoff Higginbottom
Hi Lisa,

You have basically highlighted the difference between a true 'Cloud'
application and a traditional application.

Eventually, all 'apps' will be cloud apps, and we will never need to fail-over
an individual VM between Zones, but there are still a lot of users running
traditional workloads which require the hardware to provide the resiliency,
rather that the app itself.

Until we reach the utopia of all workloads being cloud-era workloads, the Zone
HA feature is still very high on people's wish list.

Hey!Is this really all cloud environments can do? Isn't there a better
solution? I am thinking hot failover across data centers and not just
restarting a one hour(?) old, outdated backup. With the approach mentioned here
we still have to configure, for example, the SQL server in the VM to do
replication across data centers to get instant failover. This would be best
practice for an SQL database, right? Where is the benefit of snapshotting if
you have to configure replication in higher level layers anyways? Shouldn't we
just handle all the replication inside the VM (let them talk to each other) and
let a load balancer do the failover? CS would only have to recognize the
failure and restart the failed instance (start from template). The instance
should then know how to sync with the other VMs.
Maybe time should be spent on documenting an optimal failover scenario and
optimizing cloudstack for that scenario instead of spending time on good, but
not optimal solutions?
What do you think? What's the benefit of snapshotting? To be honest, I am a
little bit confused about all the different options of ensuring business
continuity in cloudstack (and other cloud management tools). E. g.: should I
turn on automatic updates in Ubuntu, just keep an outdated template and have it
update to the latest software versions each time a new VM is created from that
template or should I do manual updates and create a new template each time? The
same question still stands if I consider puppet/chef. Snapshotting seems to be
an inefficient solution to keep the server configuration/software current.

Can't go out of a vm with F5 as loadbalancer network offering

2014-03-26 Thread Amin Pashapour
Hi All,

On CloudStack 4.2.1, I have set up a network that uses an offering with F5 as
loadbalancer. All other features use VirtualRouter.  Everything is working fine
going southbound to the two VM's I am loadbalancing.

But when I am on either one of these VM's, I can't get to anything external.  I
can get to the virtual router/gateway or other internal VM's. I can resolve
www.google.com but I can't telnet to google.com on port 80

I have set egress on my network to ALL protocols from 0.0.0.0/0.  I have also
disabled iptables and still nothing going out.

I can go outside when I use the default network offering.

Any hint on what could be the cause is greatly appreciated. Or any hint on how
to troubleshoot!

Thanks.
Amin

No,its not necessary..you can use rhel/centos or ubuntu..

can u check that whether u installed DEB package repository or RPM package
repository..

here for ubuntu,u have to install DEB packages and for rhel/centos, u can
use rpm packages..

so check it once..and follow the ACS guide...

Look like Creating a Secondary Storage using Swift create a Region wide
Secondary Storage. So in theory if you have a Swift service across multiple
datacenter and the Cloudstack database replicated as well, you should be
able to recover from a lost data-center.

Although, I doubt I would consider snapshots in the secondary storage as
backup because in the case a Cloudstack Account get compromised all
snapshots could be destroyed.

Enciso,

I am not sure I understand your question correctly but I think the
answer is no! You should make your yum can find the package yourself.
I don't think ACS is packaged in any rpm repo.

ShapeBlue are currently working on a solution for Zone Failover of VMs, I
cannot confirm which version it will be included in, but 4.5 is a possibility.

With regards to the replication of volume snapshots, that is effectively
available today using the S3 backed secondary storage feature.

Hi Jim,

Very good questions and I am keen to see the answers as well. CloudStack
definitely needs to support this scenario (I don't believe it currently does).
Cross zone replication of snapshots with the ability to bring up VM's from
those snapshots is something I'd like to see too.

Subject: CloudStack DR Approach (not HA) Hello,

I am interested to know what everyone is using to provide disaster recovery for
VMs running in CloudStack?

Note, I am talking about true DR to another data center, not HA. I have seen
the previous thread where someone asked about DR, but the answer provided only
talked about HA of VMs within the same Cluster or Zone. This is not my question.

I am looking for a method to maintain an up-to-date copy of a running VM,
including its data, in another Zone or Region, such that if the first Zone is
destroyed, the VM can be brought up in the other Zone and continue production.

Before cloud, DR for virtualized environments was typically handled using SAN
replication. The VMs would be quiesced and snapshotted at regular intervals
(e.g. hourly), and the SAN LUNs would be continuously replicated
asynchronously. Following this approach, if the primary site was destroyed, the
SAN LUNs would be enabled for read-write at the secondary location, and the VMs
could then be started there, using the last successful snapshot (the last
consistency point).

I have looked at what Amazon and Rackspace provide for their Clouds, and the
approach seems to be user-initiated quiesced cloud snapshots, combined with
Secondary Storage that is automatically replicated and available throughout
their Clouds. Therefore, if the site where the VM is running gets destroyed,
the latest VM snapshot can be deployed from Secondary Storage to any other Zone.

I would like to know if anybody has experience/insights using this approach on
CloudStack, particularly using XenServer hosts.

Is there a mechanism available for end-users to create quiesced CloudStack
snapshots of running production VMs, such that applications and filesystems are
put into a consistent state prior to the snapshot being created?

Also, can anybody offer insight into how to automatically or continuously
replicate Secondary Storage across Zones or Regions, using NFS-based Secondary
Storage (not object storage), such that CloudStack users will see any be able
to deploy their Snapshots in any other Zone or Region?

If what I am describing is not yet possible with CloudStack, I would be like to
be pointed towards the part of the CloudStack roadmap that discusses the
planned architecture.

Thanks,
JJ

I think the free trial mentioned is about how the software lets you give
customers/tenants a free trial of your CS offering and is not related to
getting a free trial of the Fogpanel software itself.

Re: force delete compute host/node?

2014-03-26 Thread ronald higgins
Hi Marty. Deletion of the Host via the infrastructure panel results in the
error:

"Host 1328586a-4c6e-46fb-a196-37ba36bbb3f7 cannot be deleted as it is not
in maintenance mode. Either put the host into maintenance or perform a
forced deletion."

The Management server still thinks the SSVM is running on it... which it
isn't, which I think is playing a part in this.

So if there is a way to forcibly remove the host any guidace would be
appreciated.

Diego, spent some more time on debugging your issue. Might not be
related
to transaction refactoring as it went in after 4.2. And records for some
accounts actually got non-0 network stat:

0 network stats:

mysql> select count(*) from user_statistics where net_bytes_received=0
or
net_bytes_sent=0 order by account_id;
+--+
count(*)
+--+
 26
+--+
1 row in set (0.00 sec)

Non-0 network stats

mysql> select count(*) from user_statistics where net_bytes_received!=0
or
net_bytes_sent!=0 order by account_id;
+--+
count(*)
+--+
207
+--+
1 row in set (0.00 sec)

Adding Kishan to the thread as he has more expertise in Network usage
calculation and he might be able to help us.

I would divide problematic accounts (Networks) that are not getting
usage
stats update, into 2 categories:

CATEGORY #1 Networks having non-0 current_bytes* and 0 net_bytes
received

This situation is totally normal as net_bytes_received get updated only
when VR gets stopped. Yet on Diego's setup, those entries are not
counted
when do network usage calculation. Here is the account having problems:

mysql> select * from user_statistics where account_id=176;

+-+++---+---+--

Re: CS 4.1.1 project template issue

2014-03-26 Thread Fernando Guillén Camba

I found that this was fixed for 4.2:

https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CLOUDSTACK-4087

Is it going to be fixed in the 4.1 branch or a version upgrade is mandatory?

 Hi,

I spent a few more days experimenting with the CloudStack, and I
