Correct, it's not possible. And if it were possible, that would totally
defeat the purpose of having a password, wouldn't it?

Re: Forgot Password

2022-09-28 Thread Alan B
You may also try an OpenOffice password cracker.

A web search with the term "openoffice password cracker" turns up quite a
few hits. It will be brute force cracking, in other words make a password,
try it, if fails try another, and so on. But the password cracker
automatically creates and tries the passwords so you don't have to.

If you really need the document AND the password's not too complex, AND you
have some idea its length, then running the password cracker for a few
minutes to several days until it finds the password will get you back into
the document.

not to complex - if you know it is only letters and numbers, or better yet
only upper case or lower case letters and some numbers then fewer passwords
for the cracker to create and try and quicker results
its length - if you know it is six or eight or ten characters, or at least
five characters you can tell the password cracker to start with passwords
that length. Saves time because the cracker doesn't start with passwords of
length one character and work up from there

If you know the above things then do the web search and try some of the
password crackers.

If it's vital you can try a password cracker, but that would be really slow
you'd have to write it as a macro... For that to work it would surely help if
you had a good idea what the password was though because each attempt takes time

ODF (OpenDocument Format ISO/IEC 26300:2006 standard

impossible to open unless you have the correct password.

While it will not resolve your current issue, for the future you might
consider a good secure password manager to generate and store strong

My recommendation would be the free open source Bitwarden password

In most cities around the world, one can find a locksmith that
specialises in opening safes.

LibreOffice 3.4.4 and lower uses Blowfish algorithm;
LibreOffice 3.4.5 and higher uses AES-256;

As far as I know, the only way to decrypt AES-256, when the password is
unknown, is brute force.

My now out of date blog on the topic can be found

Maybe the user pulled that stunt of hand-editing "protected = true". No
password being used. If that is the case, then the fix is another hand
edit.

It is a stupid hack, that fails far more often that it works, but when
it works

Probably its best use, is as an April Fools Day prank.

The only way is to try brute force cracking but it will take you too much time
I guess.
If you can't try the multiple possibilities you can remember, then consider
your file lost.

you've gotten the sad news about opening the document from others.

but you can make a *copy* of the *file* for safe-keeping or other
reasons. if that's (also) what you want, tell us what operating system
(e.g. Windows) you are using and if you can, where the file is
located.

a 'document' is from the computer's perspective a 'file' with a name
like "MySecrets.docx". it is located somewhere like in 'My Documents'
or something. someone can walk you through it.

you still won't be able to see the *contents* until you somehow obtain
the password.

What instructions? Who told you that?

Yes, exactly. That's the point in having passwords. You are not supposed to
be able to open a password protected document without the password. That's
what password protection is for.

You can do that only if you know the password. It's called security.

I think there are software out there that can do it, but unless your
passwords is really stupid, it will take quite a while. Maybe days, maybe
even years. It depends on a lot of things, I guess. I think there was a
discussion about this a couple of years ago, maybe you could search the
archives for that thread. Or maybe that was discussed in the LibreOffice
mailing list, I don't remember.

Yes there is a way, assuming you use OpenOffice and use the Save As

But I don't understand why you want to save as a .doc (Word) document.
Exporting to PDF will protect updates from unauthorized users.

it is not possible to 'reset' the password; if it were, what for would one set

Optimised brute force is the most efficient way of finding the password.

There are a couple of firms that will do this for you, but their fees

The passwording used in OpenOffice .odt and similar files is very strong;
effectively unbreakable. Automated brute force methods (i.e., trying every
possible password) may work, but could tie up your computer for an extended

1. Sadly, your other responders are right: The task is close to
impossible -- brute-force trial and error is the only way.

2. For the future, my suggestion is to either NEVER use passworded

that you won't forget. Just Google "Keypass" or "Password Managers."

In addition to what Dennis says (below), it may be possible to decrypt your
file using brute force; that process may tie your computer up for days/weeks
while it tries every combination. While this is possible, it is hardly
practicable.

I remind you that passwords are case sensitive, just in case you have forgotten
that. Check your caps lock key and try again.

RE: spreadsheet password

2016-08-20 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
The Save with Password functions of Apache OpenOffice use serious encryption
techniques that require the original password to be known.

There is no means to recover the password from the files. There is no means to
recover the file without discovering the password.

The weakest point in this procedure is the password itself. There are programs
that attempt to discover weak passwords by rapid, automated trials of
commonly-used passwords, short passwords, ones with inadequate variety
including well-known patterns.

You might find a program that offers to decrypt OpenOffice files (assuming you
are using .ods for your spreadsheets) although there is usually no promise to
succeed and the free trial will perhaps not try long enough. If you pay for
one of those, there still may not be any solution in a reasonable amount of
time spent running the program. The risk is yours.

It is the purpose of Save with Password to be this difficult and keep whatever
your data is that private.

There is a slight risk that a file is damaged in such a way that the correct
password is also unsuccessful. Since you mention several spreadsheets, that is
likely not the case.

If you want/need password recovery for an ODF file, then I'd recommend
your monthly budget be in the neighbourhood of 1,ك000,000 per month,
until the password has been recovered.

Try John The Ripper, available from http://www.openwall.com/john/.

I don't what the data is based upon, but the claim is that if it doesn't
recover the password within 90 days, it will take several decades for
the password to be recovered.

Using a standard desktop, the formula for determining how long it takes
to brute force the password is:
( n ^ PL ) / 1,000,000 = time in seconds.

For a small Beowulf cluster, the formula is
( n ^ PL ) / 99,000,000,000 = time in seconds.

where
* n is password cardinality. This is also known as the size of the
symbol space. Rephrasing, the number of letters in the case of the
writing systems that are used;
* PL is password length;

FYI, this is why passwords in Hebrew are inherently less secure than
passwords in English, which in turn, are less secure than passwords in
Russian.

https://app.box.com/s/aobyrwv0w33v2hxskfjtwjcvq14sovau
has a spreadsheet that calculates approximate password strength, and how
long it will take to brute force.
(Somebody else can clean it up, and toss it into a template repository.)

Try deleting or renaming your OpenOffice user profile. If you use Windows, do
this by:
Close OpenOffice and the Quickstarter. Open File Explorer. Copy and paste

If not using Windows, details are in

Before doing this, see if there is a backup copy or a temporary copy of your
file in the directories pointed to be
/Tools /Options /OpenOffice /Paths for the Temporary and Backup files. Such
files may have arbitrary names (hgjdrx.tmp or similar). Rename them to the

Sorry Elif, to remove a password the password must me known.

The process is enter the password to open the document, open the document,
remove the password. Once a document is encrypted with a password the
password is required to unencrypt the document.

After a brief web search I found a number of password crackers for
OpenOffice. I have not used any of them and cannot attest to how well they
function, if they function at all, if the tools contain malware or if the
sites they are available from contain malware. (I work in IT and regularly
see people's computers infected with malware so yes, I am suspicious of
unfamiliar sites.) Proceed at your own risk if you wish to try any.

Word? That is an MS File Format. I didn't know LibO could save

I forget it. How could I remove the password and open my document?

If you meant Write, then:

LibO 3.4.5 and lower can write files whose password protection relies on
Blowfish;
LibO 3.4.4 and lower can read files whose password protection relies on
Blowfish;
LibO 3.4.5 and higher can read files whose password protection relies on

https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/User:TJFrazier/Encryption contains a
transitional macro for AOo 3.4, to read SHA1/Blowfish encrypted documents.

The Crypto++ library contains routines for encrypting/decrypting
blowfish, AES-256, and other algorithms for ciphers.

It was last updated in 2005, so it won't work with LibO 3.5.0, and

What version of Apache OpenOffice did you last use successfully with that
document?

Did you install a newer version of Apache OpenOffice or did you have some other
updates to your MacBook Pro?

Hello Christine,

It sounds like you would benefit from a hands-on tutorial. Could
I suggest that you explore the availability of local resources,
such as Mac User Groups or basic computer courses at
libraries/local community centres.

I am sending this message to you privately, as well as to the
list. Let me know if you need help locating possible options.

A quick test: make a new Writer file (/File /New /Writer file). In it type
dt, then press F3 key to get dummy test in the file. Now /File
/Save As; put Test into the File name box, Select ODF Text
document (.odt) in the file type box (may have to scroll up or
down using the arrow keys to select this). Make sure Automatic
file name extension checkbox is checked. Now /File /Close.
Can you do all the above and reload this file? If so, OO is
working correctly and the problem lies in your other file,
which we can then consider.

That type of support is only available from independent consultants and
firms that set their own price.

Some of those consultants are listed at
http://www.openoffice.org/bizdev/consultants.html.

The consultants I've talked with, which are not listed above, charge
between the mid-3 (three) and 5 (five) digits, for a single session,
which lasts around 45 minutes.
