Thanks, Andrea Languages in OpenOffice To obtain the relevant dictionaries, go to File - Wizards - Install New Dictionaries and download the ones you want. To set the default language for your installation, go to Tools - Options - Language Settings / Languages and set the default for all your documents. If there is a dictionary for your selection, there will be a tick mark against it. It is important to remember that language is an attribute of the text of a document, and can be set differently in different parts of the same document. This allows foreign language quotes to be separately checked against the appropriate dictionary. To set the default for a document that is different from the default setting for all other documents, when you have opened the document (or started a new one) go to the Default style and change it there. F11 (or Format - Styles and Formatting) brings up the style list. Right click on Default (or the root style for your document) go to Modify - Font tab where you can set the language for this style and will be carried down to other styles derived from it unless otherwise changed. To change the language for a piece of text, highlight the text and go to Format - Character - Font tab (or right click - Character - Font) where you can set the language for just that portion of text. Hope that helps. -- Andy Pepperdine On this mailing list help is provided by volunteers. If it's not a stupid question, can anyone say what is the intended purpose of language packs? I thought that they were intended to customise the OOo user interface to the desired locale, but this is clearly not the case with the English - as opposed to the American - version, and so I assume some other purpose, perhaps not related to the user interface. Re: [users] office downloaded onto mac computer?
Hi Princesa, I believe you are a bit confused. This is OpenOffice.org - not Microsoft. Microsoft is our biggest competitor. We do not offer any Microsoft products here. What we do offer is a full featured, MS compatible office suite that runs on many operating systems. If you'd like a free office suite for your new Mac, just visit http://www.neooffice.org/ and download the free port of OpenOffice.org to the Mac. OpenOffice.org (and NeoOffice) offer, free of charge, all the software you will need for college. A word processor, a spreadsheet, a presentation program, and more. You can create and edit MS Word documents, MS Excel spreadsheets, and MS Powerpoint presentations. You can also create PDFs and Flash animations. If all you need is a simple word processor, Text Edit will come with your new Mac, and can create simple MS Word documents. There is also AbiWord - http://www.abiword.com/ - which is a free word processor that runs on Mac (and many other operating systems). There is no legal way to get Microsoft Office for free, unless someone buys it for you as a gift. I hope that clears things up. On 2/28/06, Princesa Mendoza [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hello. Regards, Barry Hylton Davies To add cells use =cell1+cell2+cell3 etc where cell1, etc are cell references such a A5, C8, etc. These are relative addresses to the cell the formula is in. If copied to another cell the references change. To refer to a fixed cell use a $ in front of column or row. For example $A$5. These are real addresses and do not change of a cell is copied but will change if a cell is moved. BTW: This is pretty standard within spreadsheets. [users] spellchecker dictionary OO-writer
Everytime I use spellchecker it always defaults to Eng-USA despite changing all the setting in toolsoptionslanguage and writing aids to Eng-UK. Whilst using spellchecker I can change to Eng-UK but it changes back to ENG-USA everytime I go to a new word. Also Eng-Uk is ticked so dictionary is installed. How frustrating and otherwise the software is great. XP Home OOo 2.0.1

How frustrating and otherwise the software is great. The list box under Tools - Options - Language Settings - Writing Aids - Edit is a key to the large window below, allowing you to see modules and sub-modules available for the language selected in the list box and to turn those modules and sub-modules on or off. The only reason English (USA) always appears here when you enter this dialog box is because it happens to be the first language in the list in the list box, not because this dialog box is setting the language. Language in an OOo document is set as part of styles in OpenOffice.org. You are probably attempting to spell check in documents where the Default paragraph style and some or all other styles have the language attribute of English (USA) rather than English (UK). Press F11 to bring up the StyleList. Select Default from the list, right-click it, select Modify, select the Font tab, and change the language setting for that style to English (UK). This should mostly cascade down to other styles. (You can check for any other styles you are using.) If you have been doing direct formatting, you may also have to select your entire document (via CTRL-A), select Format - Character - Font and set the language to English (UK) here also. To set things up properly, create a new blank document, set the language to English (UK) under Tools - Options - Language Settings - Languages, and then set the Default paragraph style as outlined above, if it is not already so set. Also check the character styles in the Stylelist under the A icon in the Stylelist, then do File - Templates - Save, giving it suitable name for your normal template, such as Normal-Writer or Default-Writer or some such. Next go to File - Templates - Organize, find your template under My Templates, select it, right-click, and choose Set As Default Template. All new documents will now be created from that template with any style settings you have saved to it, including language settings. Of course documents not created by yourself may have different language attributes assigned to text or documents you have previously created by have other language attributes assigned to some or all of the text. I thought that they were intended to customise the OOo user interface to the desired locale, but this is clearly not the case with the English - as opposed to the American - version, and so I assume some other purpose, perhaps not related to the user interface. I don't want to start firing issues about this until I'm clear as to their purpose. This is what they are intended to do. Not sure what you mean by clearly not the case re US-GB versions. For example, the spelling of words in the menus are changed, e.g. Tools - Customise instead of Tools - Customize. If you install a language pack it should appear in the Tools - Options - Language Settings - Languages - User Interface list. By the way, it's imperative that you keep your language pack up to the same version as your OOo version. [users] OpenOffice.org Knowledgebase FAQ
Hi All, A monthly reminder of the knowledgebase and what it can offer. OpenOffice.org Knowledgebase 1. What is the OpenOffice.org Knowledgebase? The OpenOffice.org knowledgebase (or KB for short), is a collection of knowledge regarding OpenOffice.org from previous and existing users. This enables users to query the knowledgebase to see if there is any information relating to a specific problem or idea they may have regarding the software. 2. Where is the Knowledgebase? The KB is currently at location http://mindmeld.cybersite.com.au. This site is in continual development to help improve the service. 3. Why have a knowledgebase? Why not just have the FAQ's? The KB actually contains a lot of the information already in the FAQ's at this time, so there is no missing out on information. The reasons why it would be benefitial are two fold: a) it can be queried using English in a natural way, and b) it can create knowledge based on existing information and feedback. It also has the chance of duplicating the same FAQ, but this provides a slightly different view and provides depth to the knowledge. 4. Can I add questions and answers to the knowledgebase? By all means! Simply click on the contribute button on the side and provide the question in simple, easy to understand terms. Then fill in the answer with as much detail as possible. Once done, simply submit it for review. 5. I submitted a question, but it is not showing up? Why not? The questions that are submitted are not immediately visible to the public. This is to avoid any bad submissions that may be made by individuals. The questions are submitted and then reviewed by the moderators who then approve them and make them visible to the public. Once made visible, they will show up as new entries on any search for seven days, then are treated as normal questions from then on. 6. The question I asked gave a list of answers, what do I do? The answers are based on the intelligence of the software trying to match your question. This means that some of the answers may be what you want, some may be close, and others not related at all. Look at providing feedback (see below) to these to help the system learn for a better response next time. 7. The page asked about providing feedback, why is this used? For each question that finds an answer, you will be asked for feedback. This means selecting the option of Yes or No for each of the possible answers. Doing this will increase the intelligence of the knowledgebase in matching answers next time. You do not have to provide feedback for every answer, but 3-5 feedbacks per question will help improve it dramatically. 8. What if there is no match for my question? Contribute the question anyway so that it can be added to the knowledgebase. Then submit your question to the users mailing list at www.openoffice.org. This functionality is in the process of being automated to make it simpler for new users. 9. Can I access the Knowledgebase in my own Language? Currently the knowledgebase is all in English. If there is enough interest and help from other people, it can certainly be modified to adjust for other languagues. If you are interested in this area, please let me know. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

[users] Re: Is it possible prevent Adapt row height
havspace havspace at yahoo.com writes: Is it possible to turn off the automatic Adapt row height in Calc 2.0? Even if another format would be more effective, I would like to know how to disable the Adapt row height (or that it cannot be done at this time). I tried to minimise loading and saving time by setting rows to first to default, then to optimal height. Neither stops the process (whatever it actually does) occurring. It may have something to do with the format in which documents are saved. The same thing occurred with v1. The point is that it seems nothing can be done to avoid it. One tip mentioned on the forums for reducing those times is to use styles rather than hard formatting. I've followed the advice and my default template now contains a number of styles I commonly use. Styles are created and applied with the F11 dialog. I find that too fiddly for random use so I've created macros which apply particular styles. An example of a style might be, for example, _Titles : - say, green font, centred - which you would use for headings. Another post on the forums mentioned that creating a large number of range names added considerably to loading and saving times. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
