I take it the problem only occurs when OpenOffice is a slave of the other
software. That is probably an issue that needs to be resolved by the makers
of that software, if they have any interest in doing so.

All you can do is raise the issue with them. You could file an issue with
OpenOffice but I would not invest any hope in the outcome.

When a toolbar pops up, you can cancel this auto pop up by unchecking the
toolbar in menu View>Toolbars. Then, the setting is kept until you
reactivate the toolbar.
You can also dock the toolbar at the bottom of the window, therefore, the
text doesn't 'jump'. This is very usefull for some toolbars that you often
use in the context (like tables).

Hi Don

I am unsing Open Office 2.0. I would like to know if I can adjust the
margins on the spreadsheet and if it can be done, how? Also, is it
possible to pring in landscape mode as well as portrait, and if so,
how? Thank you very much.

It is. Have a look at Format / Page on the menu bar.

As you become a more advanced user, you may also want to consider
formatting pages with Page Styles.

You can learn more about this by looking at the guides and manuals at the

You're neither dense nor stupid. It's really not there!

OpenOffice.org is already a large download, and adding clipart would only
make it larger.

If you don't mind a large download, and would like OpenOffice.org with
clipart included, then have a look at the OxygenOffice project at

http://sourceforge.net/projects/ooop
OxygenOffice is basically OpenOffice with clipart, templates, fonts and
other extras added. The download is around twice as big, though.

Alternatively, you can download your clipart separately. A good source of
free clipart is

www.openclipart.org
which is a project started by OpenOffice.org users.

I don't want to correspond with anyone, just want to know if there
is...and where can I find...a clip art picture of an open book,
preferably one that looks maybe like an open Bible?

Have a look at the pictures at Openclipart on this page:

Hope this helps.

True. But when I work with the file in a text editor instead of OOO, it
makes it much harder to read. I usually run tidy on it to make it more

You can dock some of the floating toolbars (eg table, and
bullets/numbers) beside (not below) the "fixed" toolbars at the
top of the page. They still show/hide but they no longer cause
the page to move up and down. At least, they don't on my OOo2.1
setup.

Our software is called OpenOffice.org (OOo). Depending on how old
your Wordperfect and Quattro Pro files are, OOo may open them.
OOo can save them to Word and Excel. However, please note that
some formatting may be lost when you do a conversion like this.

You're probably going to have to save it directly to the mount point of
that drive (sounds like a jump drive)

It is just my hard drive but the OOo save dialog shows all media: devices.
They are not symlinks. :-(
I can't save with a real file path (eg. /mnt/...) so that is a work around.

Is OOo using the KDE file dialog?
KWord uses what looks like the same dialog and yet it works.

Hi Lance,

I noticed from your post you are using Outlook Express so I will make the
assumption you mean Outlook Express and not Outlook.

You can obtain a free spell check program for Outlook Express from
http://www.justlocal.com.au/clients/oespellcheck/

A patch is also available on this page which you need to run after installing
the spell check program.

This will make the spell checking suitable for Australia (eg "colour" and
not "color").

I hope this helps.

You need to check the Mozilla web site for information like
this. They are the ones who developed Firefox.

www.onlinebible.org has Bible computer programs with an open
Bible as one of its icons. You might want to ask permission from them
to use this icon as clip art. It is their intellectual property.

There is no software that is compatable with Microsoft Publisher.
(None that will read Publisher files, and none that can write in
Publisher's file format.)
However, there are other DTP (desktop publishing) programs which
will can be used in the place of Publisher. Scribus is one of them.

FW: [users] version 2.0.x download

2007-02-01 Thread Fajardo, Angelo
I apologize and I stand corrected, the latest is 2.1.

The webpage you directed me to and that the website directs me to for "System
Requirements" is titled "System Requirements for OpenOffice.org 2.0". As a
matter of fact all the links on the left of the download webpage under the
"Documentation" heading refer to 2.0 not 2.1. The button used to select the
download for 2.1 for "Windows" does not list W98. I've yet to find any webpage
that specifically mentions W98 as being compatible with 2.1. This is why I was
skeptical as to support for W98.

But I suppose I can take your word for it. It's just not listed in any of the
spec's.

I don't know what website you are looking at, but www.openoffice.org
(the official website) clearly states that 2.1 is the latest stable
version :
"OpenOffice.org 2.1 is recommended for all users, as it represents a
significant improvement over all previous versions"

There are of course development builds which are numbered 2.2 and can
be found here, however these are not recommended for most users :
http://download.openoffice.org/680/

I think the page
(http://www.openoffice.org/dev_docs/source/sys_reqs_20.html) hasn't
been updated with the release of 2.1 ... As other posters have advised
you, 2.1 (the latest version) should run fine on win98, dependant on
the caveats noted by other posters.

Subject: [users] Save File Function Problem with OO 2.1

I am using version 2.1 of OpenOffice.org. My problem is:

I use a utility called PC Safe and Secure ( PCSS - vers 1.2), a file
encryption package supplied by www.Boomerangsoftware.Com. When I open an
encrypted file, PCSS loads, opens the encrypted file, decrypts it into a
temporary file, and then calls the relevant application, giving it the
temporary file name to work on. When I save any changes and exit the
application, PCSS then resumes control, updates changes to the encrypted
file and closes it, and then deletes the temporary file.

All this has worked well for several years with all my apps. However, when
OO Calc or Writer is the relevant application, it works exactly the same but

I cannot use the "save" function at all to save any changes - the function
seems to be unavailable for some reason. It is also noticeable that the
temporary filename does not appear in the header line of Calc or Writer,
even though it has opened the file and I am working on it. I have got around

this by using the "save as" function and saving the changes by overwriting
the temporary file, and this works.

Can you please have a look at this problem.

Thank you

Keith Partridge

Sometimes the font list on the style dialog is empty.
The dropdown on the main window is full.

I think it may be because I created the file in Windows and I set the

It fixes if I set the size to 12pt.

You can delete a keybinding using Tools >Customise : Keyboard.

The Alt key is generally unavailable for keybindings. Alt on its own may be
reserved for menu access but why Alt+Ctrl | Shift | Function-key are
unavailable is anyone's guess. The Tab key is also unavailable. Weird.

I'm sure glad I finally have *all* of my primary systems converted to
linux... note this part in the "letter":

 and
Microsoft is providing the Time Zone updates at no-cost for customers
on Windows platforms that are covered by Mainstream Support. For more
information on the Microsoft Support Lifecycle Policy including options
available for products in Extended Support, please visit
http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle.

And if you go to http://www.microsoft.com/windows/timezone/dst2007.mspx
you'll see that M$ won't provide a free fix for Windows 2000/2000P/2000
Server/Win98x.

However they are kind enough to point out:

All versions of Windows can be manually updated using the tzedit.exe
utility or other techniques documented in Knowledge Base article 914387,
webcast 930688, and similar articles for other countries, which is the
preferred method of remediation for any product outside of Mainstream
Support. (The tzedit.exe tool allows you to create and edit time zone
entries for the Date/Time settings in the Control Panel, especially for
daylight-saving time).

Anyway, back to the OP's question:

> Is OpenOffice compliant with the Daylight Savings Time change happening
> in March?
>
> Thanks!

Answer is yes... as long as your OS or computer clock sync device/site
is :-) And if you are going to use ntp to sync your clock, please
consider using the ntp pool servers instead of direct ntp timeservers, see:
http://www.pool.ntp.org/

That may well be a bug. I don't want to test it.

When I stopped using Format >Cells and converted all my formatting to
styles, I discovered that bottom borders in rows had somehow also become top
borders in the rows below. So, I am not surprised that you are getting
strange results.

You may fare better using styles rather than hard formatting.

Because you are running under X11 you have to use X11 key commands --
control-v and control c

the "working" command c is really the copy fuction from Apple's

neooffice will give you a much more "mac" interface including

Re: [users] version 2.0.x download

2007-02-01 Thread Paul

The "latest" is 2.2.x which, according to the openoffice website, does not list
W98 as a compatible OS.

And I already know that 2.0.x is compatible with 98. This is the one that I want. But
you would know this if you had read my email. As my previous email stated "I can't
find a way to do this (download 2.0.x) from your (openoffice) website." It is
simply not available any longer only 2.2.x is.

So, is there a way to access 2.0.x from the open office website?

I think the page
(http://www.openoffice.org/dev_docs/source/sys_reqs_20.html) hasn't
been updated with the release of 2.1 ... As other posters have advised
you, 2.1 (the latest version) should run fine on win98, dependant on
the caveats noted by other posters.

[users] search and replace non-printing characters

2007-02-01 Thread Harold Drabkin
In Word, I am able to easily convert an asci only document into formated
paragraphs by searching and replacing on "^p" for a hard return, and
"^t" for a tab. ( for example, find all instances of "^p" and replace
with a space, etc.

I am trying to find how to do this in OpenOffice, as it is a frequent
task. I've tried using the "special characters" , but I do not see

Manually change the file extension to ".csv". This should cause it to
open in Calc. If you don't, do this, it will probably open in Write.

Also, without changing any extensions, within Calc, you can select the
menu item Format -> Sheet from file ... . Select the file you want from
the dialog box that pops up. Another dialog box will then pop up. You
may have to click on a sheet to make the OK button active, but don't
touch anything else unless you know what you are doing. Click OK. Your
file will be inserted.

[users] New Daylight Saving Time Dates

2007-02-01 Thread EdN
The following is from an e-mail from Microsoft:

This year Daylight Saving Time (DST) extends by approximately four
weeks. In compliance with this provision in the Energy Policy Act of
2005, DST dates in the United States and Canada will start three weeks
earlier (2:00 A.M. on the second Sunday in March) and will end one week
later (2:00 A.M. on the first Sunday in November).

In some instances, effort will be required to accommodate the new DST
legislation. For example, systems and applications may need to be
updated directly, while in other circumstances the application may
inherit the date and time information from the underlying system.

Microsoft is committed to helping customers that are affected by the
DST changes make this transition as seamless as possible. Microsoft is
producing updates for Windows products as well as other Microsoft
products affected by the new U.S. statute. These updates will be
released through technical support channels including Microsoft Customer
Service & Support (CSS), as well as online channels such as Windows
Update and Microsoft Update.

Details of the updates for Microsoft Windows and affected Microsoft
applications, how customers can acquire them and when they will be
available can be found on the Microsoft website at
http://www.microsoft.com/dst2007. Corresponding technical Knowledge
Base articles are linked from this website as well

Your Antivirussoftware mistakenly thinks the installer is corrupt.

- Disconnect your PC from the internet

That should do he trick.

This is from the "horse's mouth" so to speak:
~
OpenOffice.org runs fine on Vista. The current version (2.1) has some
minor bugs that are only annoyances (e.g. OOo uses the "old" file
dialog instead of the pretty(?) new one from Vista). They will be
fixed in OpenOffice.org 2.2

Some problems with system integration (e.g. showing thumbnails and
document property columns in the Explorer) are known that can't be
fixed until Microsoft publishes the necessary interfaces. :-(

But they will not have any impact on running OpenOffice.org. You can
use it on Vista as you can on XP.

OOo 1.9.125 was a pre Beta for OOo 2.0.0. Most current version is
2.1.0. OOo 1.9.125 was designed for testing purposes only. You need

Daylight Savings is usually handled by the operating system (eg
Windows).

so it will happen some months later this year, unless you pay
for the Beta? ;-)

Mandriva Linux and possibly other Linux distributions have a
small program that will keep the computer clock in sync with the
atomic clocks on the web. Does Windows have a similar program? I
would think so. For those in the USA using Windows, it should
just be a matter of installing and then running the program while
connected to the internet. At least this would be a good starting
point.

Dan

Windows does it by default, it has never been a problem, for me at
any rate.

Ron Ferguson

It does what by default: reset to Daylight Savings Time (DST) or
sync the computer clock with the atomic clocks on the web? Even my
Win 98SE resets to DST, but it will only do that on the first Sunday
of April, and on the last Sunday of October reset the clock to
Standard Time. It will not handle changing this at any other time of
the year. If the computer clock is in sync with the web clocks, then
the change will be made automatically regardless of when the change
occurs.
I just did a Google search and found a number of free programs
which will sync the computer clock to any chosen NTP time server on
the web.

Dan

Good Question :) So I checked.

It looks as though I set it to internet time ages ago and then forgot all
about it, but I cannot be sure. It's very easy, anyhow. One simply double
clicks the clock on the task bar then go to Internet time and set it.
Obviously it only works when connected and can be set to automatic.

Is there a way to modify the right-click menu?
I want to add a couple of things,

It does what by default: reset to Daylight Savings Time (DST) or
sync the computer clock with the atomic clocks on the web? Even my
Win 98SE resets to DST, but it will only do that on the first Sunday
of April, and on the last Sunday of October reset the clock to
Standard Time. It will not handle changing this at any other time of
the year. If the computer clock is in sync with the web clocks, then
the change will be made automatically regardless of when the change
occurs.
I just did a Google search and found a number of free programs
which will sync the computer clock to any chosen NTP time server on
the web.

Daylight Savings is usually handled by the operating system (eg
Windows).

so it will happen some months later this year, unless you pay for
the Beta? ;-)

Mandriva Linux and possibly other Linux distributions have a
small program that will keep the computer clock in sync with the
atomic clocks on the web. Does Windows have a similar program? I
would think so. For those in the USA using Windows, it should just be
a matter of installing and then running the program while connected
to the internet. At least this would be a good starting point.

Dan

Windows does it by default, it has never been a problem, for me at any rate.

According to the help-file (and I followed it successfully) you go to
Format/Page tab 'Background'. Open the dropdownlist and select 'Image'. Then
navigate to the picture you want as a background.

[users] Converting Text to Spreadsheet

2007-02-01 Thread John Barman
Iexpect I am missing something in this problem, judging by some of the
complicated suggestions I have read. Being just a simple soul, I have used,
when facing this problem, the OO 'Convert to Table' facility , ie in a Text
document - Table/Convert. Then copying the resultant table into a blank
spreadsheet which gives you Columns and Rows as normal.

I dont know if this is any help to others?

Hold on. Don't re-download just yet. What it seems you are looking at

are the options for 'save as' when you are in writer. This is the word

processing package of OpenOffice.

What you need to do is open the .csv in calc, then the save as options

will be available.

I had both MS Word and OpenOffice on the same computer, and there was no
problem with that.

The version of OO was 1.1.4, and the version of MS Word was Word 97.

Re: [users] version 2.0.x download

2007-02-01 Thread Marc Hug
From what has been said before on this mailing list, OpenOffice should
work fine with MS Windows 98, but maybe it will be a little slow. It
depends on how fast is your computer. At
you can download the program, procvided you have an ADSL connection
(otherwise it will take hours).

Or you can use File/Send/Send as Microsoft ...

You can also ask the question if the recipient needs to edit the file your
sending. If he doesn't you can send the document as PDF using File/Send/Send as
