[users] Trouble un-installing OO
Good Morning, Manfred. Thanks for getting back to us soon quickly. I'm running widowsXP Home, a registered version of 2002sp2. It appears that I'm running two versions, ver 1.1.4 and 2.0 of Open Office. Realizing this, I may have installed 1.1.4 and several months later, re-installed my OS, perhaps a year later installed version 2.0. Apparently, at that time I was not able to uninstall version 1.1.4. What may be some additional information you may need to know, is that, every time I need to re-boot I get OO prompts as follows: (1) OpenOffice.org 2.0 Either another instance of OpenOffice.org is accessing your personal settings or your personal settings are locked. Simultaneous access can lead to inconsistances in your personal settings. Before continuing, you should make sure use 'NIBOR/Compacq_Owner' closes OpenOffice.org on host 'NIBOR'. Do you really want to continue?Yes No. I usally click No, and the message disappears. (2) MOM.exe - .NET Framework Initialization error To run this application, You first must install one of the versions of the .NET Framework: v2.0.50727. Contact your application publisher for instructions about obtaining the appropriate version of the .NET Framework. I then click the OK button and that disappears. (3) CTicketManagerWnd: msnmsgr.exe - Unable To Locate Component This application has failed to start because sirenacm.dll was not found. Re-install the application may fix this problem. Again, I click the OK button, and that disappears. (4) OpenOffice.org 1.1.4 Either another instance of OpenOffice.org is accessing your personal settings or your personal settings are locked. At this point, I'm able to get to my PC without interuptions, a pain to say the least. Thanks Manfred I need all the help I can get. Thanks again Robin

I repeat the previous assertion, there is nothing outside of MS Office 07 that can read/write the MS Office 07 XML file formats. There are some add-ins and converters that can work with docx but with less fidelity than OpenOffice currently deals with .doc; however the Sun plugin for MS Office does a better job of saving and opening ISO26300 word processor (.odt) files. This apparent inability to convert my significant number of legacy files makes OOo 2.2.1 of questionable utility. I hope there is a solution. Conversion problems such as this are always much more easily and effectively handled at the starting end rather than the receiving end. If possible, return to your instances of Windows Write and Microsoft Works (or find a friends with one) and save your files in alternative formats that you can read into OpenOffice: o Microsoft Works spreadsheet can save as Excel (.xls) or comma-separated value (.csv). o Microsoft Works database can save as dBase (.dbf) - OpenOffice Base can apparently connect to this - as well as .csv. o Windows Write can save as Microsoft Word (.doc) or text only. If that is not possible, there is a partial workaround for some of these file types which may help you. You seem to be using Windows; if so, download and install the free viewers for Microsoft Word and Excel document files from the Microsoft web site. (A Powerpoint viewer is also available.) Open your existing files in these: the Word viewer will accept Windows Write files (as well as Works word processor files) and the Excel viewer will accept Works spreadsheet files. Select all the text and copy-and-paste it into OpenOffice Writer or Calc as appropriate. This will carry over your data and preserve most of the formatting, at least. If you wish, you can also download and install the Compatibility Pack for Office, in which case these viewers will also accept the new Office 2007 file formats. These can then be handled in the same way. I trust this helps. Brian Barker - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

[users] OF lowers the resolution of exported bitmaps
I'm using version 2.2.1 I'm trying to combine multiple screenshots from Google Maps into a single image. I've got them all lined up and each is of sufficient resolution to read the street names. However, when I select them all and export them the resolution of the resulting image is too low to read the text. This happens with BMP, JPEG, GIF, PNG, etc. However, if I export them as a PDF, it retains the high resolution. Also, if I export only one of the screen captured images it also retains the high resolution. I've gone through the help file, the issue tracker, and the wiki but I can't find any information on this problem.

Hello- Well!! I am most appreciative of the surprises -- your program is everything you said it would be and more! I doubted that something that sounded so simple and logical would really work universally, but it does. I am not impressed with Vista on this replacement computer I received because most of everything I had was obsolete under it. [users] Right mouse wheel does not work
Guten Tag users, I use OO for a while now (every now and then only - in different versions up to the newest 2.2.1). What really keeps me off it and sticking to M$ Office is the fact, that OO does not support my right mouse wheel! I have a A4-Tech Mouse with two wheels. One for vertical scrolling and one for horizontal scrolling. M$ supports both, OO and my favourite Browser Opera don't. It is not the fault of the driver but the fault of the software they say at A4tech. Since I like my two wheels, they save me a lot of time - especially in spreadsheets and tables. Unfortunately I will have to stick with Mickeysoft... I'm really sorry to do so and you would make me happy if you implemented this thing. Another thing I use often is cutting and fitting pictures in a text document. I can do well with M$'s way of dragging an angle-shaped corner with my mouse to cut a picture. OO offers a menue where I can cut by numbers/ values which seems rather clumsy. I hope you understand what I mean - I use the menues in German an don't always know the english words. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[users] Icons not displayed on toolbars - Base
I have just installed OOo 2.2.1 on Win98SE, along with the postgres sdbc driver version 7.4. Base can connect with my PostgreSQL 8.2.4 server and open a database with no problem. But some of the icons in the tool bar and menus show up only as dark gray squares. In the file menu, only Export is blank. In the View menu, all icons are blank. The number of icons in the tool bar that are blank varies when I look at different screens and tables. On the main view with tables selected, two are blank. When Queries, Forms or Reports are selected, nine are blank. Four of them flash in when switching between selections, but drop out immediately. In table views, on one table only one is blank. On another table, 13 of the 16 are blank. Is this a known problem, hopefully with a known fix, or do I need to submit a bug report? I did search the FAQ and email archives, but could not find anything that suggested a way to correct this problem. In the one thread that sounded like this problem, it appeared to me that the responder did not understand the problem, but thought the buttons had been disabled, which is not the case. Re: [users] OF lowers the resolution of exported bitmaps
Hi, You don't say what program you are using to achieve this task. You might be better off using a graphics program like The Gimp or a page layout program like Pages. Draw has a limitation that means the maximum resolution of bitmap outputs is ~100 dpi (just over screen resolution of 72 dpi, I think). The issue for this is at http://www.openoffice.org/issues/ show_bug.cgi?id=4499 if you wish to vote for this enhancement. Hi, I agree with the crop function in OpenOffice being a little clumsy. You can vote for this to be fixed in a future release of OpenOffice here http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=66403 Hope this helps On 23 Aug 2007, at 19:31, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Guten Tag users, I use OO for a while now (every now and then only - in different versions up to the newest 2.2.1). With regards to the OpenOffice problem, if you go to the Control Panel and then to Add/Remove programs do you see listings for OpenOffice in there? Is there more than one? Get back to us with the answer to that, but in the meantime try: Look in the bottom right corner of your screen where the time is. Do you have an icon that is greenish with birds on it? Re: [users] Right mouse wheel does not work
G'day I have a A4-Tech Mouse with two wheels. One for vertical scrolling and one for horizontal scrolling. M$ supports both, OO and my favourite Browser Opera don't. It is not the fault of the driver but the fault of the software they say at A4tech. It's probably more complicated than that. Both horizontal and vertical scrolling work perfectly (and automatically) for me in both Opera and OpenOffice.org. But I'm not using Windows. So it's obviously not just the fault of the software. The problem must come from a combination of driver, operating system and software. I agree, though, that if OpenOffice.org can help the situation, they should. Another thing I use often is cutting and fitting pictures in a text document. I can do well with M$'s way of dragging an angle-shaped corner with my mouse to cut a picture. OO offers a menue where I can cut by numbers/ values which seems rather clumsy. I think you are talking about cropping. I agree that OpenOffice.org's way of cropping is clumsy. I normally crop in a graphics program before pasting the graphics. When using Windows, I like XnView (www.xnview.com), which makes simple editing of graphics easy. Many others prefer Irfanview. [users] Printing free-form text on labels
Hello, I'm a new user trying to figure out how to do in Writer a procedure that was very simple in my previous word processor (an elderly version of WordPerfect which simply will not run on Windows Vista). So far, it is defeating me entirely. I have a C program which generates a .txt file containing a number of short free-form records which I want to print on sheets of Avery labels. Each record has a tag to mark its beginning, as well as some tags which represent internal formatting. With WordPerfect, I simply wrote a macro which set the paper type to be the appropriate Avery labels, inserted the text file, then went through the file to add the formatting where needed and to insert a manual page break (i.e. label break) between records. After the macro finished, I could go through manually and reformat any individual records which were too big for the labels. I've tried to re-create this in Writer by selecting labels, picking the type of Avery sheet I want, then clicking New Document. This gets me a blank page with the outline of the labels on it, but when I insert my file, it tries to put the entire file on the first label rather than running the text from label to label in a sensible manner. Since I typically print 125-150 labels per run, I don't look forward to cut-and-pasting them individually from the text file! I thought about trying to do something with multi-column layout and simply print the text file onto the label sheets, but without being able to see the layout of the labels, I can't ensure that the breaks will align or if I need to manually reformat some records. Is there another angle from which I should be approaching this problem? All the examples I can find with labels focus on drawing information from databases and dealing with fixed-field data. I could fairly easily reprogram the tags to be XML style if that would gain me anything. Cheers, Marg B. Re: [users] [moderated] YOU MUST GIVE A SUMMARY HERE
Original Message From: Jackie [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Mon 27 Aug 2007 08:57:26 EST Hi I am at a loss, is there a very new learners page, which explains it in really very simple terms, at least in the beginning, I hope so. Need a simplified learners page that explains details and shows how this is to be done in a very simplified manner, can you help me please. Jackie ONeil Your message isn't very clear about what it is you wish to learn. I am assuming you have obtained (by downloading or on CD) and installed OOo (OpenOffice.org). If not, then go to this page: http://download.openoffice.org/common/instructions.html The OOo package includes several office type programs. To get an overview about each of the programs and what they do take a look at this page: http://www.openoffice.org/product/index.html If you have not used this type of software before, you would probably want to start with Writer the word processor for creating and editing documents (eg. letters, books etc). I am not sure about an absolute beginners guide, but you will find a lot of information on the following page: http://support.openoffice.org/index.html - provides links to a number of learning resources and tutorials. Here are some links from that page that may help get you started: http://documentation.openoffice.org/manuals/index.html - click the PDF link next to http://documentation.openoffice.org/manuals/index.html;. http://documentation.openoffice.org/tutorials/index.html - click the PDF link next to OpenOffice.org Writer tutorial. http://www.tutorialsforopenoffice.org and http://inpics.net These look like good resources for someone using OOo for the first time. There is a wealth of information on and linked from the OOo website, but if you get stuck you can always post back to this list for assistance. Hope this helps. Now I want to insert a header at page 2 that will not appear on page 1 and have it carry the same heading for the rest of the document. I also want to have the page number as part of this header. How do I do this? You need to use styles. Open the help file and search for: First Page page style HTH Dave signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature
Re: [users] Simple Addition Formula
Brian Barker wrote: At 17:19 26/08/2007 -0500, Bill Eyesaw wrote: I am trying to determine how to enter into an Open Office document simple formulas to calculate addition totals for individual column ranges. Any help appreciated - Are we talking of an OpenOffice *spreadsheet* (i.e. Calc) document? o Click in the cell where you want the column total. o Click on the capital-sigma symbol in the input line above the sheet display. (Greek sigma means sum in mathematics.) o A blue box appears around a suggested range to be summed. If necessary, grasp it by the hand symbol inside the box and drag the box until the top left corner is in the appropriate place. o Now grasp the tiny blue square at the bottom right of the box and drag this, too, until it is in the appropriate place. The blue box now indicates the range you want summed. o Press the green tick symbol in the input line to approve what you have done. o Bingo! Look in the input line. You will see a formula using the SUM function. See how it works. You can type such formulae in the input line or edit them there yourself if you prefer. I trust this helps. Brian Barker On the other hand, if you're talking about a table in Writer, it can be done there, too. If you click in the cell where you want the sum and type =, a formula bar will appear near the top of the window. One of the buttons is labeled with something that looks like a fancy f(x). Click and drag down from that; it will show a list of available functions, the first of which is SUM. When the cursor is there, drop it. Now click and drag across the range of table cells you want to add. When they're all selected, drop. You should now have something showing in the formula bar and in the table cell that looks something like =sumA1:A5 (in this case, summing the first five cells of the first column of the table). Press Enter, and the formula will be replaced in the table by the calculated sum. The formulas themselves work just like what Brian was describing for Calc. You can type all kinds of them directly into the formula bar, if you have something more complicated than a simple range. For instance, you can start with the = in your result cell, click a cell, type +, click another cell, and so on until all the things you want to add are in the formula, then Press Enter and the sum will be calculated. A surprising amount of power here, isn't there? (cc to Bill Eyesaw) - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[users] Linux installation oddity
Hi all This evening I downloaded OOo to a Mandriva 2005LE machine. Moved the .tar.gz to /opt Unpacked with 'tar -zxvf ./whateveritwas.tar.gz' Went into the RPMS directory and as root ran rpm -Uvh *.rpm Went into the desktop-integration directory and did the same rpm options with the mandriva rpm. Tried to start OOo as a regular user from KDE menus and it failed to start. Tried to start OOo as regular user from Konsole and it failed to start with errors saying no such files for /etc/openoffice.org2.2/program/soffice and one other file that I forget. When I had installed the rpms a directory 'openoffice.org2.2' had been created in /opt so I moved that to /etc and all seemed to work after. I've never seen OOo fail to start like that before. Anyone else seen that behaviour? IanS - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
