Can't say for sure - I suppose there is but there hasn't been any priority
set to it that I've seen.

I will need to stick to a version of Windows, Win7
if it is as good as it is advertised, instead of using Vista.

We each make decisions - but I wouldn't let it stop me if I wanted that
64bit OS. There are many 64bit windows users, it's only in a few cases (it
appears to me) that you even need do anything special and in all those, that
I know of, it is just that - just the need to mind a particular setting or
 load a particular support file.

I have an HP AMD64bit desktop, I run Ubuntu 64bit on it and yes I have some
issues with sound and video no matter what.
Joyce's PC here is a Compaq Intel32bit desktop, runs Ubuntu 32bit and yes I
have some issues with her sound and video from time to time - maybe it's the
 sys admin :(
We have an HP 110 Mi (Atom) net-book - this has Linux pre-installed and
there is no glitch to be found with video or audio anywhere at this point
 (~4 months).

Finally - I only run 64bit because I want to use virtualization in order to
run multiple desktop/os combos for testing purposes, with database server(s)
running back on the host. It is hard to see real advantages to going 64bit
for Windows or Linux desktops in most cases.

 Best wishes,

 Drew

Drew, this may be a little off-topic, but I find that many of the sound
problems I was having with my HP AMD x86_64 running the notorious Creative
X-Fi sound card have been solved by updating to the Karmic beta with the
2.6.31 kernel. The stable version will be released the day after tomorrow ;
you might want to consider giving it a whirl

[users] Word references not picked up properly in OOo

2009-10-27 Thread McLauchlan, Kevin
All,

I've inherited a document that was created in an earlier version of Word
(pre-2007). I'm trying to sort out reference links as they appear when I open
the document in OpenOffice 3.1.1 on Windows XP.

In several places, the title numbers/prefixes of Chapters and some major
headings are captured by reference - for example, there's a document overview
before the first chapter that describes/summarizes each chapter and appendix in
a brief paragraph.

In Word, these appear as:

Chapter 1 - the blurb about this chapter.

Chapter 2 - the blurb about that chapter.

Chapter 3 - the blurb about this other chapter.

Appendix A - the blurb about this appendix.

Appendix B - the blurb about that appendix.

The Chapter 1 or the Appendix A are bolded. In Word, the user/reader can
Control-click the Chapter 2 (or whatever) to jump directly to the first page
of the target chapter (or appendix).

HOWEVER, in OOo 3.1.1 on Windows XP Pro x64, what I get instead is:

[] - the blurb about this chapter.

[] - the blurb about that chapter.

[] - the blurb about this other chapter.

[A] - the blurb about this appendix.

[B] - the blurb about that appendix.

The Chapter 1 items do not appear - in my example above, the [] represents
the gray shaded rectangle that indicates a reference link, but there are no
characters inside the gray.
For the Appendix A items, just the LETTER appears, bolded, in a gray shaded
area - the word Appendix is missing.
I can click those gray areas (no Control key necessary) to jump immediately to
the associated page.

In OOo, if I'm on the page that has the reference link targets (like the first
page of Chapter 4), I can see a shaded spot following the chapter heading, but:

a) I can't select it
b) if I get the cursor in or near it, the menu item Edit Fields... is
grayed out for me.

So, I don't know how to edit these references that were created in Word, nor
how to make more of them if needed.

Where's a good place to start looking? I would like the reference targets
throughout the document to propagate much as they do in Word. I don't know
specifically how the Word doc captures just the numbering of each reference
without also capturing the text of it... but since the original author did it
that way, I figure I might as well continue if it's easy to reproduce in OOo.
Most of my work these days is in a Help authoring tool or in FrameMaker, so I
don't use either Word or OOo that much, but I prefer OOo when necessary.

Thanks,

Kevin

2009-10-27 Thread Walter Hildebrandt
Johnny, you are correct that sorting does compact columns D and E. The
problem still remains how to get the data out of columns A and B into
columns D and E. If it is not possible to get the data out of columns A and
B, then it is a help knowing that columns D and E can be compacted by doing
a Sort. (I can manually copy, one row at a time, the rows in column A and B
that also have a name in column C, into the same row in column D and E, and
at the end Sort to compact. When a lot of rows are involved it is easier
to paste on the same row and at the end doing a Sort. As compared to going
up in columns D and E and compacting as each row is Pasted.

Re: [users] Compacting some cells in a different column

2009-10-27 Thread Walter Hildebrandt
My guess is that there is a possibility to write a formula that would be in
column D, and maybe also in column E, that would copy and paste the data
into columns D and E when there is a name both columns B and C. This would
make the copy and paste automatic instead of manually copying and pasting.

The formula would say if there was a name in column B and C then copy A and
B into D and E.

Around about page 119, the footer stopped showing the page number.

I am showing Non-printing characters, Hidden paragraphs, and Field Names.

I don't see anything that says manual page break on it.

QUESTIONS:

How to find where/why the footer stopped containing the page-number field?

How to make it resume containing the page number?

If there is a manual page break - as there very probably is - there
will be a dark blue line along the top of the text area of the first
page following the break. These lines are pretty invisible unless
you are used to looking for them.

How to find where/why the footer stopped containing the page-number field?

You've already said it happens around about page 119: just examine
the document and see. See the blue line at the top of the
page? Why? Because the page style changed.

How to make it resume containing the page number?

Various ways, according to needs:

o Apply the page style of the first part to the later parts of the document.

o Modify the page style of the later part to include page numbers -
most easily by simply using Insert | Fields | Page Number - and
formatting appropriately.

o Remove the manual page break by putting the cursor in front of the
very first character on the first rogue page and pressing Backspace.

I trust this helps.

I would suggest using a flash stick over a burned CD to copy the JRE
you downloaded from one computer to the other. When it comes to
updates, it may be better to select the version of OpenOffice.org with
the included JRE to download. I turn off Java automatic updates as it

Jesus.

Drew,

No sure what your looking for here. OpenOffice.org has some document
version tracking built-in. When working on the users guides we use
OOo's ability to track and display changes from several users. If this
is what your looking for I can go into more detail.

[users] Linux OOo 3.1.1 DEB install problem

2009-10-27 Thread Web Kracked

I was trying to install the latest DEB version of OOo, but keep getting
errors.

I keep getting a deselecting message for each .deb package when I run the
update shell script using the sudo sh . . . script command. on that
file.

It just lists the names of the .deb packages/files in the folder saying the
deselecting message for each file. I use the sudo that is asked for
to run

the script, but it will not get it working.

Ubuntu runs a 3.0.1 version as a default, but I do not want to wait for
someone
to add an update in the update system or some add on in the Synaptic
Package Manager.

I use Gnome, currently, for my desktop of Ubuntu 9.10. For now I will
not go
to KDE, but maybe later. So do not tell me to switch. I need some
Gnome stuff
for now and if I can find the stuff in KDE (later when I have a lot of
time on my hands)

then I will look into switching.

I may look into a different version of Linux in a few months, after I
finish some of
my projects and can move my data off the Linux-box so I can change out
to something else.

So can someone tell me what I am doing wrong?

RE: [users] footer stops showing page number

2009-10-27 Thread McLauchlan, Kevin
 Brian Barker [mailto:b.m.bar...@btinternet.com] suggested:

If there is a manual page break - as there very probably is - there
will be a dark blue line along the top of the text area of the first
page following the break. These lines are pretty invisible unless
you are used to looking for them.

How to find where/why the footer stopped containing the
 page-number field?

You've already said it happens around about page 119: just examine
the document and see. See the blue line at the top of the
page? Why? Because the page style changed.

How to make it resume containing the page number?

 Various ways, according to needs:

o Apply the page style of the first part to the later parts
 of the document.

o Modify the page style of the later part to include page numbers -
most easily by simply using Insert | Fields | Page Number - and
 formatting appropriately.

o Remove the manual page break by putting the cursor in front of the
very first character on the first rogue page and pressing Backspace.

Thanks.

The manual page break was hidden in the start of a new chapter (which happens
to have a thin black line...), so I danced a bit with getting the cursor in the
right place, and finally killed the beast.

After a while, jumping around among four or five applications, one loses track
of what goes where. . . or what it looks like.

Re: [users] Grammar Error

This sounds like a dictionary problem. Either it's missing (program
can't find it) or the dictionary being used is not the same language
as your typing.

Looking for all that, and the ability to compare different versions of the same
file that diverged from a common ancestor outside when the versions were
edited outside of these tools.

You do not say what operating system and the like that would be helpful,
but I am guessing Windows XP. Is this a laptop or desktop? The reason
I ask is that running XP, sp3 on a laptop here from time to time I see
the same type problems. I found that the computer was over heating.
Giving it a good cleaning solved most to the problem, going from 528
megs of memory 2 gigs has also helped reduce the problem.

Hope this helps.

The freezing and repositioning of the cursor sounds like what happens
during an autorecovery -- you might want to check Tools Options,
Load/Save, General to see if you have a very short interval there.

Is there any chance that you've done something with language settings
that means it's using the wrong dictionary? Just a thought If
that's happening, right-clicking on a misspelled word might show you
suggestions in another language.

If you can live without the spelling check, the quickest thing would be
to turn it off altogether for while typing operation. You can always
ask for the check explicitly, but from what you say that is currently
useless.

When I've had this kind of silent refusal to run, there's been an
orphaned soffice.bin process running, even though neither the
Quickstarter nor any OOo window is active. Getting back into operation
can be done by ending that process (which will also end any soffice.exe
processes), or by doing a system restart.
