If the document model is wrong^Winappropriate, then it needs changing.
The model should reflect real-world needs, not restrict usage.
Compatibility with the competitor's model is surely a red herring.

I'd never thought about the PP's issue, but it seems a valid point to raise.

[users] Combining Mathematical Functions in a Spreadsheet

2010-11-03 Thread Amichai Rotman
Hello,

I am trying to create a spreadsheet to keep track of my work ours.

This is what I have:

Column A - Number of hours I've worked that day - X
Column B - The amount I get paid per hour - Y
Column C - The amount I get for bus fair per day - Z
Column G - Should be the result (in currency format) of X multiplied by Y
plus Z equals T.

I was able to enter the following in column G:

=PRODUCT(A2:A30,B2:B30)

to get the result of money I get paid for the number of hours I worked.

My problem is: What do I have to write to add the amount I get for a round
trip by bus for that day. G has to be the final gross amount of money I get
paid for that month.

Thanks!

Why not write the formula just as you stated it? Enter this in G1:

= A1*B1+C1

Copy this formula in G2 through G31. To do this, click cell G1. A little
square appears at the bottom right of that cell. Move the cursor over
this little square. The cursor should become a +. Drag the little square
down to cell G31.

Finally, in H1 write this formula:

= SUM(G1:G31)

H1 will not have the final gross amount of money you get paid for a
given month. (Remember that sometimes the 31st of a month is a work day.)

Or if you want G1 to have the final gross amount, try this:

= SUMPRODUCT(A1:A31;B1:B31) + SUM(C1:C31)

SUMPRODUCT gives you the sum of all the products for X*Y, SUM gives the
sum of all the Z.

Hi All,

Continuing my last question:

I'd like to create a Sheet for each month. In column A of each sheet I'd

Is there a wizard I can use to specify the dates range (say: Nov 2010 till

automatically entered in column A - from A2 to A31 (or 30, if that moth is

Of course I want to use it on a different file for next year too

I hope I was clear enough...

[users] VLOOKUP COUNTIF with numbers and text

2010-11-03 Thread Phil Hibbs
VLOOKUP and COUNTIF will not find a numeric search value in a list of text
cells. They will, however, find a text value in a list of numeric cells. Why
one way but not the other? I am not a fan of strong typing in end-user
applications (it's fine for programming languages, but not all spreadsheet
users have a programmer's mindset or dilligence).

At least VLOOKUP and COUNTIF are mutually consistent - Excel will not work
either way in VLOOKUP, but works both ways (text in a list of numbers, and
number in a list of texts) in COUNTIF.

Having said that - if the list contains the text being looked for and the
same value as a number, then COUNTIF as text will find both and return 2. If
looking for it as a number, it only finds one of them. So, is 1 in the list
once or twice? That depends on how you look. Not ideal. This inconsistency
raises this behaviour from a feature to a bug in my opinion.

Re: [users] Re: What is the use case for multiple sheets in Calc?

2010-11-03 Thread jomali

 snip

If my memory serves me correctly, I first encountered multiple sheets in a
spreadsheet many years ago in Lotus 1-2-3 when it was touted as a 3D
modeling tool. Two-dimensional data with identical formats in each sheet
could be aggregated in a top sheet. Of course, the same result could be
achieved by defining various zones in a single sheet, but review of the data
in each sheet is facilitated by being able to go from tab to tab.

One could imagine a document model in which associated writer, spreadsheet,
database and presentation documents would be held in a single file, with the
ability to reference data between them. OOo already allows some such
interaction, albeit with data in separate files. I wouldn't hold my breath
waiting for such a redesign to happen. Of course, if someone provided the
resources...

Actually, the distinction between 'spreadsheet', 'word processor' and
'drawing' is unnecessary and a thorough nuisance, I guess based on
practice born of historical necessity. Look at the inconsistent mess in
OOo where nominally similar/the same things are treated quite
differently (Calc and tables in Writer [/why/ do they have different
syntax?]; fields in Writer and Draw [Draw offers a most miserly subset];
graphics object treatment in Writer and Draw [just try aligning two
objects in Writer!!]; text frames in Write and Draw [I want to flow text

I'd better find a nice parapet to duck behind. :-}

I think the easiest way is this.

1) Create a start spreadsheet.
2) On the top line cell A1 type in the 1st date in the month e.g. 1/11/10
3) On the second line below the 1st date set a cell a2 with = a1 + 1.
The cell will show 2/11/10
4) Copy cell a2 downwards for as many days as you require and the dates
will appear.
5) In a new spreadsheet copy and paste the 31 days you require from the
first spreadsheet. Change the date at the top of the column to be
whatever start date you require and all the others will appear.

I hope that it clear

WHAT system won't let you unsubscribe? If you speak of one list, it
sounds like you haven't been able to unsubscribe from several lists. If
you send your unsubscribe requests in the manner prescribed by the

Phil.

Pardon? What are you talking about? Would you mind to post some example
data?
A spreadsheet *is* a simplified programming language. You will get wrong
results if you do not understand the difference between 123 and 123 or
the difference between values and formatting. What you get is not what
you see.

do a

then this is the number that identifies the process, and yo have to kill that

or

Then you can safely change the configuration file: go to your OOo user

Vanilla OOo, and some distros (like Fedora) use the default directory:

~/.openoffice.org/3/user

IIRC for go-oo it may be:

~/.ooo/3/user

you can check the right value in the Options dialog (menu Tools - Options -
OpenOffice.org - Paths), for example, my Path for AutoText is

/home/ariel/.openoffice.org/3/user/autotext

this means the user dir. is a hidden folder located at
/home/ariel/.openoffice.org/3/user/

Then go to

~/.openoffice.org/3/user/registry/data/org/openoffice/Office

and look at the Recovery.xcu file, sure you will find in it an entry in the
RecoveryList node, this indicates there is file to recover (in your case, your

If you know something about XML, remove every node in the RecoveryList.
If not, simply remove the whole Recovery.xcu file.

This should fix your issue. If not, please report back.

Apparently the address that I use to receive emails is not the same as the one
my ISP sends, but my ISP translates it on their server. As a result, my unsub
command carries an address that isn't in the database, and every attempt to
modify the acknowledgement email has failed, as I'm still getting messages.

And while the typical reader/volunteer cannot help, a moderator must
occasionally read these messages, and that person can bring this to the
attention of the list owner (who apparently ignores emails written by me
directly).

And yes, I'm on this list and the Discuss list, so I am speaking of multiple
lists. I apologize for hijacking the original thread, but I can't think of any
better way to get a moderator's attention without being obnoxious.

is flawed. Master documents takes care of that situation if they are to
be merged. And it is not much of an effort to simply open all three in
individual windows w/multiple instances of OOo - you can do this with
'Window' select window/resize to show side-by-side etc.

I think a better example would tabbed sections; for a book writer each
tab would be for each chapter, or a screen writer where each tab would
be for each scene. In the end, both the book writer screen writer
would be able to create links, etc., between the individual
tabs/sections for cross referencing, styles, etc.
