That's an anti-static wrist strap. I've often used those when working
on circuit boards. There should be a fairly high resistance between
that metal plate and the clip, so that if you touch something that's
live, you won't electrocute yourself. That resistance will not make
much of a difference with static discharge.

I don't have a template close to your formating, but try this.

Under Format/Page:

   Change Page Layout to 'Mirrored'
Keep inner margin the same as you currently have for left margin
Reduce the size of outer, top, and bottom margins by about .3".

This should get you close. You can fine tune it after.
You might also increase font size by 1 pt to compensate for shrinkage
when printing.

Thanks for this good advice, Larry. I'm getting a new computer, and if I
can't get a PDF pseudo-printer to work properly (unscaled output,
side-by-side layout), I'll know what to do.

So does vacuuming, if done in the direction of the airflow. If the
laptop cannot be disassembled, then a soft brush on the intake
(usually under the laptop) and maybe a cotton swab. But most laptops
can be easily disassembled and properly cleaned. My Dell gets that
treatment twice a year, otherwise the long doghair clogs it up to 50
degrees at idle!

I wouldn't recommend disassembling the heat sink. The heat sink of
most laptops transfers hear via copper tubing to the fan, and the
dissipator (is there a better word in English) at the fan end can be
cleaned just fine.

You should be able to download it from there. Note that this file has
several blank pages, it's a work in progress. (It also uses the
"Typewriter from Hell" font, but I doubt that matters to the basic
format of the PDF file. Probably will look pretty bad with font
substitution, though!)

Barbara,

Now I am confused. The "brochure" print is a "quarter fold" print out.
That is each part of the printed so that the paper is folded in half
twice. I see no what to do that with your layout. Am I missing
something?

Andy

Brochure print, as I'm using it and as happens with direct-to-print
operations, is half-fold, not quarter-fold. Given eight pages (as in my
current example), the appropriate layout has two 5-1/2" x 8-1/2"
portrait pages on a landscape 11 x 8-1/2" sheet, arranged like: 8-1,
2-7, 6-3, 4-5. Printed in duplex, then folded in half, it reads like a
book.

Try this:
Open the document.
File - Printer Settings; make sure the options are set to produce 'brochure';
OK
Then File - Page preview; click on the 'Print options page view ' icon; set
the resulting view to 2 pages side by side (probably landscape). OK

Then File - Print to your pdf virtual printer (primopdf/pdfcreator etc)

I find that sometimes it's necessary to set the view to portrait/landscape in
the 'print options page view' screen several times, saving between each
switch, and sometimes switching the 'brochure' option off and on as well to
get the print output to actually do what it is supposed to. It can be such a
pain that now I output to a pdf file and print brochures from that. pdf
printing just works.

The direct printing works fine, but thanks for the tip about the page
preview. And the printing to PrimoPDF worked fine until last night,
between two tries. The first worked; on a different document with the
same layout, but only four pages. Then when the second one brought up
Adobe, it insisted that I'd have to install a printer first before I

still think that Export to PDF should create the same page layout as
direct printing does -- or at least respond in some way to the Brochure
setting in Options, allowing the layout to be established. Anyway, now
when I use PriomoPDF I get a message "Spooler Subsystem App stopped
working and was closed". -- and if I continue, I get a PDF with page 8
beside part of page 1, and nothing for the other pages. It's really
frustrating.

Ah! I missed that one somehow -- didn't think of this as a scaling
issue, and I'd have to redesign my pages to cope with this setting. It's
not intended to be scaled, and as is, the content goes way in toward the
fold. I think it's reducing everything. With different page styles and
margin settings, I could probably make this work. But I'd have to work
with all the other folks who sometimes do the printing, since it changes
the process. Thanks for the pointer, though!

Try this:
Open the document.
File - Printer Settings; make sure the options are set to produce 'brochure';

Adobe Reader will print files saved as PDF as a brochure. I use this

I don't see any booklet support native in Adobe Reader (version 8.1.7

none of the combinations ends up with what I want -- at least, I've
tried every which way and ended up with various unusable layouts. And

I don't know about other layouts

I'm using version 9.2. The feature may be new in version 9. You can find
it in the print dialogue under "Page Scaling:".
