[VFB] Nice Easter weekend in Sweden...
8:15 a.m, day before yesterday: Was ordered to open my eyes and the first thing I saw was a blazing sun through the window. Perfect day for going out with the small ones. A few seconds later I realized that this wasn't going to happen. I heard a dog breathing somewhere in the room... and it turned out to be Emelie in front of the TV. Short quick hissing breaths. The only walk outside for any of us was going to be from the door to the ambulance. After a few minutes fighting on the phone with a nurse who just couldn't believe that she felt so sick because she was able to cry like that the ambulance was finally on its way. Teresa followed in the ambulance while I stayed at home with Klara. Blue lights and sirens... and half way to the emergency hospital (which is in the next town) they had to stop to pick up an anestethic nurse... just in case. Teresa has been a nurse herself and knows what that just in case means, so she was NOT comfortable sitting in the front with the driver, not being able to see anything anymore. A couple of hours later she called and knew nothing... and then she called again and knew nothing... and then she called again and knew that they would not come home the same day. So mom had to drive me and Klara up to the hospital with stuff for them. I was a little bit worried how that would work out. I know the reaction when granny walks in here... toys flying, everything flying, Emelie jumping and running. How would that work if she had monitors and stuff connected? But that didn't happen. We walked in and there she was lying with cables and tubes. But it wasn't the same untamed wildcat that I knew. This one barely lifted her eyes when we walked in. It was a sad sight. Noone wants to see their little baby like that. So that night I had to be single father. They still don't know what it was, but she responded to Asthma medications so last night we could finally get them back home. If it actually IS Asthma is yet to be seen... but now she's considered asthmatic until it can be ruled out. Paramedics and sirens... not what any of us had expected to find in the Easter Bunny egg. /Nick --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the VFB Mail group. [VFB] Re: up note on Easter
Speaking of thongs, my bride bought me one about six years ago. I went fishing in S, Korea, wearing the darn thingie and lo and behold, I had an urge to do a #2, I mean a bone chilling, brain knocking urge and started running for the Korean outhouse on the other side of the pond. Of course as you know, you have to run puckered up and with straight legs. My buddies were laughings their rearends off. Well I got to the outhouse and threw open the door and it hit me; the unbelievable stench of fermented cabbage, rice, hot peppers all mixed with gastric juices and somewhat solid waste. Even the flys were staying away from this place. Well, I held my breath and pulled down my overalls and started searching for the straps on the undies. I was weighing in at about 280 at the time and with the various rolls of fat, the thong was hidden somewhere. Well you know the rest of the story, After releiving myself and feeling much better, I disrobed, found the thong, removed it carefully(a bit stained) and threw it in with the rest of the stuff down there. Oh yea, there was no TP either. This is true - just ask me and I did catch some fish (trout and an European Carp). Jim May your GOD be your fishing partner. [VFB] Re: was up note on Easter, now photos on this list
Not me! I know him. Just the thought is hard to bear (and I should talk! LOL) Please keep those posts off-list. LOL On the original VFB site, because of the virus situation, Byard had the limit set at 4kb, I think, which was smaller than any virus. If we can post photos now, that would be a great stimulus to the site, if it can handle the memory without getting clogged. Anyone know anything about this? To keep it in Byard's topic-realm, pics of flies with recipes, or fish, gear, etc. would be welcome additions to a heretofore just-text format. Pics kept to the smallest readable resolution and size would help. [VFB] Re: Tips on 'Nature Calls While Fishing'
My day is just ruirnt! LOL, Can't say I been there...not geographically at least, but have been state-side (without the thong part). Park and camping area facilities can be really bad. And then some, like the ones at Miracle Mile here, are spotless and odor-free. On the other hand, my 50cal. SW allows me to 'go in the woods' where the bears and cougars go. This is sorta fishing related (without some of the 'gory' details), as a bad case of the trots can spoil a fishing trip. I try to prepare myself for 'non-standard nature-calls operations' by drinking only bottled fluids and taking Pepto before I start the journey and during. Before Baja, most of the group takes a perscription medicine for Montezuma's revenge. Having a problem while out on a panga is not the best of memories to bring home. I have been spared it, but have had friends whose vacations were ruined by it. So it is a valid topic- might as well lose your gear- fishing is over. As we men get older, our need to go gets more often, and when our need happens in chest-waders out in the middle of a crowded stream, do we want to leave just to go, and give up our spot? I try not to drink much before a wading trip. But I wonder if taking a salt pill would help, since salts causes the body to retain water. Anyone know? The Gudebrod C-Thru product arrived yesterday, and I have been playing with the material. If you took the standard braided nylon material used for making loops, and scaled it down using smaller diameter nylon fibers, then you can visualize the product. The braided loop material is commonly available in 35-pound and 50-pound test. The C-Thru material is 25yd. spools of 17, 8, or 6 pound. I ordered the 8 and 6. The breaking strength listing is very deceptive, as I haven't been able to break the 8 pound test with my hands. It is very sturdy stuff, tightly braided. The 8 pound is .019 diameter, and about 1/16, about the same as many butt sections of leaders. Indeed, you could easily have a quick substitute for a furled leader butt using this stuff. The 6 pound test is .015 diameter, about 50% thicker than 1/32. I am not sure what types and sizes of dacron are used for blind eye hooks, but the C-Thru would make a very good alternative. The source for the material, available in single spools, is Land of Odds: 6-pound C-Thru http://www.landofodds.com/servlet/Detail?no=28074 8-pound C-Thru http://www.landofodds.com/servlet/Detail?no=28075 17-pound C-Thru http://www.landofodds.com/servlet/Detail?no=28076 If anybody has further questions, just contact me offline. If it actually IS Asthma is yet to be seen... but now she's considered asthmatic until it can be ruled out. [VFB] Re: Braided nylon loop connector material?
Hi Neville, I am developing techniques and a series of flies using a shapeable, moldable foam. The foam cannot be tied to a hook (the thread cuts right through it). Hooks need to be GLUED into the foam. When done properly, the setup is very durable. I have been looking for a product that I could wind around a hook that would give the hook shank a tooth without a lot of bulk. The purpose of the tooth would be to give the foam something to hang onto, to prevent rotation or slippage around the hook. Just from the tests so far using the Gudebrod C-Thru, it works for that purpose! I am also going to play around with the material for special leader mini-connectors and such. Should be interesting to make loops from 8-pound, 1/16 diameter braided nylon. Like I noted, the breaking strength is much greater than listed.
