Re: [videoblogging] Show audience

2005-08-09 Thread R. Kristiansen

Hey Tyrone,

I second Stephanie's comments, especially about growing an audience
from your own country. Also, being an audience yourself on other vlogs
might help you gain an audience.

I take it you are a QuickTime 6 user on a Windows machine, right? I
use QuickTime 6.5 Pro myself, and I will today put up a few
screencasts on how I use QT pro to export movies for the web. The
screencasts (flash online demos) will be available on this page later
today: http://www.screenvlog.com/?page_id=29

When it comes to Premier 6.5 I am more clueless. There are a few other
Premier users on this list, and maybe they can help you out. There are
also several forums for Premier out there which I guess you could
check out.

Good luck, and keep at it. Building a vlog viewership takes a lot of
hard work and above all patience.

Best,

[videoblogging] Fun With CamStudio

2005-08-09 Thread Sheldon Pineo

Hi guys!
This is a shameless plug for the latest post on my vlog.  I was
fooling around with CamStudio, and visited a GPS simulation site that
is listed at www.geocaching.com.  I was quite satisfied with the
performance of the program.  It did a great job of recording sound
from my mike and the sound card.  I have to give this program a
wholehearted "thumbs up!"

Thanks very much for that. I have tried to get them as quicktime files but with no luck. I edit on Premier 6.5 and from there cant seem to get it right compressing the file to quickime (not sure on exact codec and such). I also have quicktime 6 and every file I export from quicktime 6 does not seem to be a proper quicktime file. Please if anyone knows exact procedure form Premier 6.5 to get to quicktime right compression please let me know either an option in Premier 6.5 or exporting from quicktime into another programme. Thanks again.

[videoblogging] Re: MSM Dialogue (was: CBS starting a podcast (Response To David)

2005-08-09 Thread Gena

If we keep going at this pace, it will be 300-page snooze fest! No
really, this is great. I appreciate the opportunity to express and
have my ideas challenged and explored.

Having said that, I am going to be off-line for a few days. Reality
demands my attention and I have two events that I want to record for
posting on my blog. I'll read the digests but will not be able to
respond until Sunday at the earliest.
==

"Actually, 18-34-year-old males are the most desired audience, and
even thoughI still fall in that range, I agree the programming choices
stink."

This provides an opportunity for video bloggers to fill in the various
gaps in programming. I see no shift in behavior on the broadcast TV
side of the fence. With everyone in MSM chasing the same demographic
group they cast aside millions of people. Segments of the population
are aging. Other demographic groups demands will take center stage
(Latino/Latina/Hispanic) Old line media will have a hard time getting
anyone to pay attention to their petitions.

You might want to beef up your 401K plan to be on the safe side. ;-]

===
Video on Demand

The future form of video blogging and related compatriots will have to
establish distribution/syndication accessible to non-technical folks.
This will happen. If I know who was gonna do it I'd start saving for
the IPO right now.

There will be more players than just American MSM. When the
bandwidth/distribution situation is worked out, you will have content
from around the world. I could choose to watch a performance from
Ghana or Rome.

The BBC is much more web savvy than any current American broadcaster.
And they are planning to go further. They understand about
connectivity, audience participation, and retention. They are still in
learning mode but are years ahead of CBS.

Sorry.

===
Carpetbagging Part 3

You cannot steal an audience that walked away or was discarded. They
chucked women, smart people, politically alienated people, creative
people and millions more in the unwanted pile.

Television has not yet acknowledged the need to adapt. Not just to the
distribution methods but viewer choice and participation. They ain't
got a clue about that one.

This might be a harder shift for MSM to make. Blogs, podcast,
videoblogs, gaming and those 24 hour nooky films web sites are
alternatives. Don't hate people for wanting more than what was or is
currently offered.

You are not gonna change my mind about the "contest" thing. Okay. It
is a step. I'm not saying what they have stepped into.

Video bloggers will have to adapt too. Like panty hose, one size does
not fit all.

There are people here who will run to MSM with content for money. I am
not knocking this, it is a choice. Some will hook up with like-minded
affiliates in a co-op income stream.

Some are on a mission/vision and no amount of cash money will stop
production. A few don't give a damn about mission it is more of "how
can I exploit this to my benefit."

It is import that "we decide" not advertisers, content pirates,
marketing/pr firms or traditional media. I know some of the silent
lurkers are from these places.

Doesn't really matter. It just takes opening up the bandwidth and
bada-bing we are in the next wave.

I'm laughing as I write this: "who am I to say?"

I haven't disclosed who I am. And reading some of the disclosure posts
I not sure I want to. I have an embarrassing lack of riches to bring
to the table (real world wise) I would really like to leave it at
being a human being but some days I have my doubts.

I am an information packrat. I love photography and video and recently
reclaimed it as my birthright. I have a need to share information that
I have tenuous control. I still have a curiosity about the world.

I'm not in the media industry. My day job has nothing to do with any
of my interests. I guess I'm not ready to do this because I can't find
the words to describe who I am and what I do. Partly because it is
being invented as we speak.

Later,

[videoblogging] call for entries-documentary advertising

2005-08-09 Thread owen mack

hi everybody.

i introduced myself to the group awhile back (april?), and have since had a few

back-and-forths with jay, ryanne and others. here is a slightly modified version

of a note i sent them recently:

i know this is going to make you sick, but i thought i'd let you know. i am

launching a project called coBRANDiT: we're starting up an open-source agency to

specialize in documentary advertising and we're looking for contributors. as

incentive we're paying $50 for submissions. check it out here:

call for entries: http://www.cobrandit.com/

i want you to know that i totally understand your disgust with marketing, and

your desire to keep commercial messages out of the videoblogging sphere. i want

you to also know that while i have been compensated for making video for Pabst

Blue Ribbon and PUMA, i currently have no paying projects or active clients. we

are self funding this thing in the belief that we can attract sponsors and create

a way for non-professional videographers to play with commercial media. i know

you're interested in ways videobloggers can get paid (rel=payment, paypal, etc);

i see coBRANDiT as another option. you want payment from viewers, i want payment

from brands. (end of note)

we are looking for videobloggers who are interested in the possibility of getting

paid to produce short pieces about brands and people for use on brand websites.

(example: stuff like michael verdi's post today about his neighbor's mini cooper.

http://www.michaelverdi.com) my hope is to create a community of videographers

that can be hired to produce content of this sort. the business model for this is

not all worked out, please consider the $50 offer a thank you for your time and

interest. with any luck we can start a collaborative business that provides

compensation to contributors and changes the way advertising works.

so submit a video! http://www.cobrandit.com/

[videoblogging] Ourmedia - 553 Disk Full error

2005-08-09 Thread Richard Bennett-Forrest

For the last few days, I've been getting a "553 Disk Full" error
trying to upload to Ourmedia with their rebranded ompub.exe tool.
Going back in the IA forums, this seems to happen every now and then
for a day or so, then gets cleared up by the IA guys.

I also looked in the Ourmedia forums, but couldn't find any mention
of the error.

So I'm of two minds whether its a real IA problem, or just my set up
for some reason.

Does anyone have any ideas?

I've not had Internet access for a few weeks, and I've been sick, and
I now have a backlog of videos to upload, so I'm a little frustrated
about not being able to catch up...

Regards,
  Richard

>either of those available on my copy.

if you've got QT installed then premiere is using the QT engine. But
it has dumbed it down. all of this stuff is sitting there in QT,
premiere just isn't talking to it.

Easiest solution is to get QT pro (but on PC problem whether you get
6 or 7, others can comment, if there is 7 available get that even if
beta, at least you won't lose your licence when you do move to 7
later).

export from premiere to DV, or avi or something. open this in QT
player. There you will get a lot more options for compression and
settings. Alternatively get Cleaner from autodesk. Does much the same
with more export options, batch processing (though on os x can do
this using QT pro with automator), though it is 10 x price of QT pro.

As Andreas likes to say, QT pro is the swiss army knife application
for this sort of work.

Aloha e Megumi,

Or should I say, irrashaimase?

Let's see.  Firstly, your URL is:

http://luvmegumi.blogspot.com/

You posted 'blogspot' with an extra T, which takes you to a
typojacking site about paternity testing.  And just by a quick glance
at your post, the reason you're getting a Microsoft page (which may
be the default for your PC when a URL can't be resolved) is because
your link is malformed.

You posted:

http://http//www.archive.org/download/Eighty_Year_Wait/80yrwaitvlog.mo

Notice the extra 'http://' in there.  I think you might've just
missed the colon in your HTML editor and it added the extra protocol
marker as a result.

Good luck, and welcome to vlogging!

hi jamie,

you should be able to use a DV cam
there is a "video settings" button that allows you to select the video
input
if you don't see video on the entry screen then press the button and
select the appropriate device from the camera tab
(same for audio if necessary on the "audio settings")
I tried this the other day with my own vidcam and could switch back and
forth between my iSight and my dv cam
you can test your video and audio anytime prior to the conference by
going to the conference room url

well said Frank.

maximising audience is confusing quotidian media with mass media. in
the former you make minor specialised works (the long tail), if yoiu
make stuff that only 6 people get, but they're a very good 6 people,
great. in the latter since you spent (let's say) $100,000 a minute to
get it to screen you have to maximise audience to get revenue.

more does not equal better. Specialisation means small readerships.
This is not a bad thing. It is precisely what enables blogging and
videoblogging.

RE: [videoblogging] MSM Dialogue (was: CBS starting a podcast (Response To David)

2005-08-09 Thread David Yirchott
Gena,
Sorry this is a long response. If we keep this up we may have the second
book to come from this group! I separated the points with lines to make it
easier to read. I promise I'll try to make any future posts shorter!

>>I really understand about having too much to do and no time to do it. I

Yeah, maybe I need to do a little more "full disclosure." I am, I think, the
only person currently on this list that does not yet blog or vlog. I have
mentioned it before. I am lame. I am still in academic mode and trying to
find my voice. But soon, soon I shall join you all in the Promised Land of
free expression. I was going to dive in the other week, but my work schedule
got switched, I didn't (and still don't) know what to call my vlog, I am
sort of waiting for Movable Type to release 3.2 (any day now), and, well I
suppose there will always be excuses. Anyway, hopefully very soon.

That being said, I don't expect I'll blog much about work. Television and
media theories, perhaps, but not specifics of my day-to-day job or the
people there. That's typically where people go wrong. Although, who knows,
maybe someday something blogworthy will happen at work. I guess I'll cross
or burn that bridge when I get to it.

Actualy, 18-34-year-old males are the most desired audience, and even though
I still fall in that range, I agree the programming choices stink. That's
why I don't miss my television. But you are right, they listen to the
advertisers and they serve up banal or sensationalized programming to appeal
to the widest desired audience (AKA: lowest common denominator). But they
are in a business to make money, so while I don't necessarily like it, I do
understand it. It is the same with movies, unfortunately.

The other part of this as Clint Sharp, myself, and others have stated: They
get one program to air at any given time to the entire country. If you tune
in at 8pm tonight, any station you go to is going to offer you one choice
(unless you go to a Video On Demand station). Think of the possibilities the
Internet can open up when they -- and we -- are not restricted to a
single-program delivery model. Will they change or just offer more of the
same? I don't know. But they might invest more in higher-quality second-tier
programs that will bring in sizeable cash even if it is less than what they
make off of "I Want To Be A Hilton" because they can effortlessly show both
at the same time.

When TV and the Internet become joined, however, it'll bring with it a host
of new issues for businesses to deal with: Instead of competing in a
500-channel universe, they will be competing against every web page in
existence. What will the advertisers do? Pay lower Internet rates instead of
high television rates? If they do, then networks will lose money. If TV and
Web become the same, there will be no reason for network affiliates anymore.
Network shows would be accessible via the network website/stream or from
other non-local affiliates (unless they figure out how to restrict it).
Likely they'll lose many affiliates and the cashflow from them. If
Internet/Web is the same, in theory the whole world could watch a show --
but will US companies want to pay ad rates if the show is seen by a large
number of people outside the US? Same for political ads. I am off on a
tangent. Sorry.

To get back to yourpoint: MSM has gotten rich off of the coveted
18-34-year-old male. But they haven't really understood him. So, they were
taken somewhat unaware when research started showing that that demographic
is watching less television. They play video games. They use the Internet.
Internet usage=less TV. Broadband=even less TV. Broadband saturation is over
50% in the US.

Is MSM killing itself by putting such a high focus on men 18-34? Yes and no.
As this demo continues to migrate away from TV, networks will have to make
adjustments. However, if relevant high-brow content was truly what people
wanted, PBS might likely be the richest network. Afterall, unlike
traditional networks it gets significant funding *directly* from its
viewers. And viewers have sway when it comes to picking shows.

If television networks had been the ones who pioneered alternative media
distribution methods, they might have controlled it, now they are playing
catch-up and they don'

Although my brand new camera's sound chip is shot, we were able to
throw together a quick vid of this past weekends Seattle-Apple event...

Shout out Bre, Clint and Mel for helping present a good event.  Also,
thanks again for attending the BBQ.

Note, Bre also has this vid linked up from both imakethings.com and

I'm looking forward to the next event (maybe next month).

I guess it's a euphamism for "maybe dead by now". When I was active in the

the lines of the form "Wednesday 10-Aug-05 01:00 (GMT Daylight Time

i cut and paste those into wiki from confirmation email (sure wish it

They're both technically right.  One is GMT, the other is GMT Daylight

I agree that this would be a pretty overwhelming task considering the
level of traffic, and further, Yahoo! Groups' search functionality
leaves a lot to be desired.

Though I do say so myself, a great resource would be this list's
content as it is mirrored over at Google Groups:

http://groups.google.com/group/Videoblogging

The thoroughness and granularity of the search function there is
impressive.  I've used it several times to find URLs posted and other
things.

I have a mix of old and new on my vblog. That's why I made that
initial statement below.
One story on dummycast.com, is a video/story  about one of FIRST
internet cafe's in the world (at the time) 1995. We have come along
way in 10 years. And some people out there (like myself) have been
producing content for a long time. Now it's time to show it!

It's just funny to hear the audio, "will the desktop computer..be as

I guess so.

Subject: DTV beta for Mac is now liveTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]This is a big day for us-- we just released a Beta of DTV for Mac OS X.
You can download it now at http://participatoryculture.org/. It's totally free and open-source.The Windows version and full DTV launch is coming in just a few weeks...
DTV
is an internet TV player: you can browse the built-in Channel Guide and
subscribe to dozens of channels. Watch fullscreen: music videos,
documentaries, video blogs and more. You can submit your
channels to our open Channel Guide, or make your own channel with
Broadcast Machine. And you don't need to be a videomaker to have your
own channel -- use Broadcast Machine to link to videos from all over
the place. There are known bugs in this version, but
we're excited to get this DTV beta out into the world – we'd love to
hear your feedback. The goal here is to make sure that
internet TV is open and independent. Free, open source software and
open standards (like RSS) mean anyone can watch and everyone has a
voice.Help us spread the word as widely as possible
about the beta for Mac. Internet TV should be free and open-source,
just like blogging and podcasting, and we need your help to make sure
the open-source stuff takes the lead. One last thing:
our design contest is still running, so you could win $1000 if you
submit a DTV interface mockup and we use your design (or $300 for a
logo). Thanks to: our development team, our design team
(especially the volunteers), everyone who's given us feedback and bug
reports on DTV so far, and our partner organizations (check out some
cool new channels in DTV showing right now).Download DTV beta for Mac OS X today: http://participatoryculture.org/And after you try it, let us know what you think! Send us your thoughts at

Where is all the old stuff?

People have been making great short movies and video for many years.
They have been showing them to friends, at local clubs, and submitting

Is there any program out there that allows me to render an .avi from

A very timely post. Just last night I posted a QT video I
made with Premiere
6.5. I couldn't figure out how to enable Progressive. Documentation
(both internally & on the web) suggest I use Save to Web

In Pro, instead of choosing "Export Movie" or "Save to Web", use Export

To make QT fast start, you have to choose "Compress Video Header".  I
just leave all the settings as they are.

[videoblogging] Fwd: REMINDER: Millie's 80th Birthday Bash

2005-08-09 Thread Steve Garfield
Hi everybody,
For those of you who are fans of my mom's blog, My Moms Blog, I wanted to let you know that her 80th birthday is coming up on August 18th.

Her friend Ronni Bennett wants to turn a big portion of the web into a birthday party for her.

I think it's a cool idea. So if you want to post something for her on the 18th, that'd be great. ;-)

I'd link to her blog on this post, but she watches her stats closely, and then she'd follow the link back here and it'd ruin the surprise.

You can Google "My Moms Blog" and she'll pop up.

Thanks,
--Steve

Begin forwarded message:

From: Ronni Bennett
Date: August 9, 2005 1:27:50 PM EDT
Subject: REMINDER: Millie's 80th Birthday Bash

This is a followup to my initial email on 28 May to remind you about Millie's (My Mom's Blog) BIG DEAL 80th birthday. As I said in that email: This is too important to let go by with a few comments from us on her blog. How about this: That every one of us puts up a big, fancy, colorful, wonderful Happy Birthday, Millie on our blogs that day and link to her.

Thursday next week - the 18th of August - is the big day. Here's all you need to do to turn a big portion of the web into this celebration:

1. Create some fabulous, colorful, outrageous celebration of Millie's birthday for your blog post that day. If you can't do graphics or a photo or music or video - big, colorful letters would be great too. Whatever you can come up with.

2. When it's posted, send Millie a comment on whatever is her latest post (she'll get the messages by email too), wishing her happy birthday and tell her to visit your site. Be sure to include your URI.

That's all there is to it.

Meanwhile - DO NOT MENTION THIS TO MILLIE OR ON YOUR BLOG (she might see it). Let's have it be a surprise. Also, please forward this to anyone else you think might have been missed in my email today. Yeah, I know I've hidden the recipient list, so anyone who gets duplicates - well, aren't you lucky :-)

Also, there are some on the list who didn't get the first announcement. I didn't know you then, but I hope you've visited Millie's site from the link on mine.

There are too many of you for me to do a second reminder and I have to send this in several batches because my ISP won't let me email this many people at once. SO PLEASE DON'T FORGET.

Let's make this the biggest birthday bash the web has ever seen.

Best,
Ronni

in scope, and not strictly videoblogging, but the overall Digital Video

Re: [videoblogging] MSM Dialogue

2005-08-09 Thread Beth Agnew

Many of us vlog because we believe the medium to be a tool for change.
While we may not necessarily see ourselves as agents of change, we
certainly feel we have our own voices that should be raised in support
of, and against, those things that affect us. We choose video for its
power to affect people in a way that text and audio cannot.

The negative voices are raised everywhere, and the MSM replicate those
negative messages far and wide under the guise of journalism, which is
often just sensationalism. I am particularly aware of the _millions_ of
dollars of free publicity given to the Al-Qaeda messages of hate, when
the MSM picked up clips from Al Jazeera and beamed them around the
world. Bin Laden must have been laughing his azz off.

The historical precedent is strong. One voice, with the means of
production, and even limited distribution, can influence many. I like
Jan's notion of
_broadcasting_ our own statements for change. If we can visualize it, we
can make others see it too.

Laugh your stress away.
Laugh for no reason.
Laugh every day.

A very timely post. Just last night I posted a QT video I made with Premiere
6.5. I couldn't figure out how to enable Progressive. Documentation
(both internally & on the web) suggest I use Save to Web
export option, but it isn't there! Perhaps it's a plugin that is not

In Pro, instead of choosing "Export Movie" or "Save to Web", use Export > Adobe Media Encoder

To make QT fast start, you have to choose "Compress Video Header".  I just leave all the settings as they are.-- _ Quirk_ Bullemhead.com

2005-08-09 Thread Serra Shiflett

That's a great idea!  I dont need a name for my vlog for that - and it
doesn't have to be just for me.  What if we start a "videoblogideas"
tag or something?  I'd be so excited to subscribe to it!

What do you think?  vlogrevolution?  vlogevolution?  influentialvlog?
videoblogideas?  vlogphilosophy?  I want to make it inclusive so its
useful to more than just me.

I feel like I should choose right now so that people can start
tagging, but I'm a little afraid to define the tag alone.  This is
such a great idea, though!

I think having a detailed FAQ that actually addresses newbie questions would be really
useful. Yahoogroups software makes it easy to archive an FAQ and have it sent out
automatically on a regular basis.

One thing I really like about this list is the way new vloggers are welcomed with open
arms. I've been on other lists where over time, the veterans of the medium get uppity and
dismissive of newbies trying to enter the fray.  I truly hope that doesn't happen here. Video
blogging is still such a new idea that there are no true "experts" - just people with more
experience. So the more welcoming we can be to new faces, the better

Re: [videoblogging] Re: I need to find influential videos about the vlogging revolution

2005-08-09 Thread R. Kristiansen

Granularity of video is a topic that comes up sometimes. quoting is an
issue, peter/mefeedia and others are working on that. vlog anarchy is
a good one, of course I also recommend my own definitive definition of
videoblogging at http://www.dltq.org/?p=518 .

There are quite some talks in academia about the advent of media and
personal media, I connect to some of it, others I do not. I think your
topic sounds great, Serra. As always, Andreas is good as a source.
Adrian as well - they are on your radar already. Hmm, who else...

I will look into this a bit. I will be talking with Jill Walker from
my University of Bergen soon in relation to a Norwegian blogging
convention we are having in october; might interview her about it and
vlog.

Let's collect some of these discussions, and look at the tangents out there.

In the end, the point is that we can all get butt naked if we want to
(easy part) or unsettle a few bee-hives (hard part) because we are
able to be the media ourselves.

Looking forward to this discussion and following your research blog/vlog, Serra!

best,

Raymond M. Kristiansen

I am using Premiere 6.0 and when I pick 'Save For Web' it shells out
to CleanerEZ which then opens a dialog box to allow me to choose quite
a few preset export formats as well as a Wizard to specify each export
codec and parameter.

Unfortunately after I get past that point and am ready to export
CleanEz 5 crashes on me...so now I use Avid to get my progressive
download.

Hope this helps.

uncomfortable with a group this size

a helpful suggestion may be accepted gracefully or not, its the thought
that counts isnt it?

question: if you had an arts grant to set yourself up with new mac,
software, camera, editing stuff etc etc, what would you buy and why?
dream wish list as well as practical suggestions.

im switching platforms to mac and havent used one in about ten years

[videoblogging] Re: disclosure

2005-08-09 Thread Anne

hello australian artist.

i'm an artist in canada who has a blog. not sure what kind of blogs
you're looking for specifically...blog as art, blog about the artist
and their work, blog about art reviews of gallery shows?

as an artist interested in forms of communication, i consider my blog
to be an art project containing various permutations of the concept of
"art blog".

there are lots of art blogs out there and the list is constantly
expanding. most of them are focused primarily on more traditional art
practice (physical gallery spaces with drawing, painting, photography,
installation, etc).

you can check out the blogrolls on these sites to find something more
to your taste.

http://www.digitalmediatree.com/sallymckay/
http://zekesgallery.blogspot.com/

of course, there's always bre's site I Make Things as well
http://www.imakethings.com/

here in canada, there will be an art blogging discussion taking place
sept 22-24 at artivistic - an art conference in montreal. art bloggers
from around north america will be in attendance.

i'm hoping to be there with the specific agenda of promoting
videoblogging as an alternative to gallery located single channel video.

I'm closely watching the feed on this today (I think I mentioned my
e-mail for the group isn't working at the moment) and so i will
probably see any related posts made today.  I'm certainly not saying
the thread should be kept off the group, I guess I was hoping that
anyone posting would also e-mail me privately just to make sure that I
notice them, in case they get lost in netnewswire (which doesnt have a
"sort by subject" or "sort by string" feature).

It would be AWESOME if you made an archival feed of these videos.  I
love the continual revolution in this group!  I just re-discovered
Michael Verdi's "summary" of vlog anarchy responses at
http://www.michaelverdi.com/2005/02/vlog-anarchy-take-2.html which is
awesome.  I'll try to post any additional ones I find also.  I'm sure
you've all seen the recent NPR (
http://ryanedit.blogspot.com/2005/08/go-listen-to-npr-story.html) and
49Podcast ( http://www.odeo.com/show/116451/view/ ) interviews; those
are another couple I'm probably going to quote.

Thanks guys!

Serra
http://headsoff.blogspot.com

PS: anyone think of any catchy blog names for me and my project?  I
was thinking something short and easy like "videostring" or
"videosyntax"...  I want to stay away from really assumptive ones like
"videorevolution"..  Naming things is hard.  I feel for you even more
now, Andreas.

Maybe instead of a separate group for newbies, just a FAQ (isn't that
why it's called Frequently Asked Questions instead of Stupid

questions. Today's stupid question is tomorrow's insight, no? Editing

Re: [videoblogging] MSM Dialogue (was: CBS starting a podcast (Response To David)

2005-08-09 Thread Jan

My feelings about MSM include 'disdain' 'distrust' 'sadness' and a certain
'creeping bitterness'.

The genesis of those feelings has a lot to do with advertisers who do and
say anything they think will sell their products. The main effectiveness of
television advertising is repetition. Fact: What the human mind hears
repeated it believes to be true.

Investigative journalism is dead and I'm sad in grieving its passing. What
used to be an hour of national/international news is condensed into 20
minutes of airtime, further reduced by incestuous "news" of its own later
shows / stars / movies and spurious, unregulated medical news that only adds
to our culture of fear. The death of journalism is exascerbated by the
judicial system jailing journalists for protecting sources.

Beyond fear, MSM supports a culture of lies. Sprint's cell phone
commercials, for example. No cell phone is without interference. The truth
to the question, "Can you hear me now?" is, "No, damnit." Automobile
commercials tout their design as totally unique when in fact all sedans look
very much alike. I challenge you to watch an evening of television with a
"truth filter" on, noting the number of lies. It's quite fantastic. When you
accept lie after lie, day after day, you cease to seek or care about truth.

In the wake of the London bombings MSM showed ordinary Amerians saying, "Oh,
it's fine if police search my person if it helps keep us safe."

What the human mind hears often it believes.

I propose repeating in our own media statements of how we want the world to
be.

For myself, I repeat that it isn't done alone, to pay more, that love makes
heroes of us all, that there is nothing to fear, that it is not okay to be
subject to police search even if it has the potential to save hundreds or
even thousands of lives, and to always travel with an entourage and a
toolkit.

What are your mantras?

Okay, gotta go vlog my mantras.

If i may suggest, can we instead keep this thread open so the group can also discover/rediscover such videos?

noteworthy videos, in particular those that delve into the core of this

what is and isnt noteworthy... i would love to dredge these gold

This may be a dumb question, but why do you _want_ to promote your
vlog? What would actually be the benefits of having more viewers?

Everywhere I look I see mass promotion of things, and in every case
well over 99% of the recipients and simply not interested. I would
consider my life _much_ better if all this unwanted crap just stopped.
I can't help feeling that attempting to "promote" a vlog (just like
attempting to "promote" a blog or other web site) is just as pointless
and aggravating.

The way people find things on the internet is by _searching_. The
rules for making it easy to find your vlog are the same as the rules
for making it easy to find any other web site. Make sure the text
accompanying your video contains a good, full description of the
content of your video, and people will find your blog. Best of all,
they will largely be people who are actually interested in what you
have to say! Swap cross-links with sites about similar topics and you
get even better.

By all means have some business cards or descriptive flyers if you
think you might meet people in the real world who are interested, but
that's really just a convenience to help them remember your URL.

I agree with Michael Verdi, FWIW.

You don't know how much value this stuff may gain in the future, it could be considerable.
IMHO, it would be extremely unwise to give away every right you have to your videos at
this point in the game.

And, by they way, if you agree to those terms you *ARE* giving up every right you have to
the video as long as those rights are granted by YouTube (CC be damned):

"including the unfettered right to sublicense such rights, in perpetuity throughout
the universe."

YouTube is banking on you thinking like an amateur, no one with any professional urges
whatsoever or even the faintest glimmer of hope of a professional career either as a video
personality, producer or editor should agree to these terms.

I'm not a lawyer, my 2¢.

[videoblogging] I need to find influential videos about the vlogging revolution

2005-08-09 Thread Serra Shiflett

Hey everyone!

As some of you know, I am a graduate student and I am just starting
work on my master's project, which will explore the transition from
text to video communication.  I want to ask you guys for some help.

If you know of any good videos that I can quote relating to the
evolution of or difference between privatized media and media in the
hands of every citizen, I need some references for my proposal
paper. I've been trying to search out some that I saw previously,
interviews with jay and conversations between people on the topic, but
its still difficult to search for specific video content.  I'm sure
some of you have links saved to some ground-breaking pieces, and I'd
really appreciate your sending them my way, especially more
philosophical statements from the "great thinkers" in the group :-)

This is a little more of a far shot, but also if you know of any
pieces relating to the difference between video and textual language I
would love to take a look at them.

I'd prefer you sending me these links privately so that I don't miss
them in all the vloglist e-mails - headsoff at lanugo dot org

I will be starting a separate vlog soon (as soon as I come up with a
suitable blog name) that explains my project and contains the videos I
make for it as I make them.  If you want, I'll give you credit if you
send me clips I use in my paper ;-)  Stay tuned.

Thanks for your support everyone, take care!

As a matter of fact i'm using firefox :) Interestingly, i got no option
to enable "Fast Start" when exporting from Premiere 6.5, only "Optimize
for streaming" in the codec options, and that doesn't help out either.

Is there any program out there that allows me to render an .avi from
Premiere, shove it in, and generate a nice streaming .mov file?

Cheers,
Christopher

This is a central question. For me, Blip.tv or my own server space
will mostly suffice, but still youtube has it's place: Conversion to
flash. There are many more people who can watch flash than .mov.
Besides, taking some footage and uploading that without going through
the whole hoopla of editing, exporting, uploading will work for some,
at least as a starting point.

I am eagerly awaiting for the day when blip.tv can convert to flash as well.
Now, to continue reading up on XML and working on my blogging and
videoblogging tutorials for the Scandinavian market.

Re: [videoblogging] iMovie Deinterlacer

2005-08-09 Thread Joshua Kinberg

I've used FFmpegX on the Mac for deinterlacing video.
http://homepage.mac.com/major4/

It can be a little tough to install because there are a few
dependencies, but once you get it running its really an incredible
tool.

At my previous day job at a TV station, I often had to transfer mpeg2
video encoded for TV (interlaced) and put it on the web. I would first
transcode the mpeg2 files to mpeg4 quicktime, resized and
deinterlaced. Then I would compress further in quicktime pro to
something more suitable for the web.

Hope that helps.

Re: [videoblogging] Can't seem to make my .mov file stream

2005-08-09 Thread Joshua Kinberg

Make sure you select the "Fast Start" option when exporting Quicktime.

Also, it sounds like you are using Internet Explorer for your web browser.
Internet Explorer sabotages Quicktime, something we've explored on
this list previously.
IE will only allow quicktime to fast start if it is embedded in an
HTML page, otherwise IE will have to download the entire file before
it begins playing. This has something to do with the way IE handles
video objects with ActiveX.

FireFox, and every other browser it seems, will correctly play
quicktime with fast start.

It may be time to switch web browsers.
