The saddest part of all this is seeing the musicians that get caught up
in it and go down in flames when they realize that they've just
alienated their fans because they were pursuing $ instead of their art.

Most of us, like most indy bands, are doing this stuff cause we love it
and we want to create something.  If you go into something with
the sole intention of whoring it and making money, you'll usually end
up with a significantly lower quality product than those that are doing
it solely for the passion.

I think the power of Creative Commons will start to affect the music
industry soon.  When more up-and-coming artists start releasing CC
stuff,  then the Big labels sign them, the artists won't forget
where they came from and will refuse to be bullied into ridiculous
distro contracts.

There is hope.

As for this:

We are getting closer to the time of "...This is the day that the
music died."

Yeah, I realized that. I'm re-uploading the videos now; hopefully it
will work. Thanks.

I really want to do that, but I don't want the videos to autoload
(which would kill the page's browsability) yet I want the videos to be
viewed in-page. This means have a spoiler tag, so the video only
loads when you click. The problem, however, is I don't know how to
use an image link as a spoiler tag (at least not in Wordpress, which
is the system I'm using).

[videoblogging] More code goodness from I/ON

2005-10-16 Thread Nathanial Freitas

***warning: the following is an acronym heavy, developer-oriented email
that may make videoblogging newbies and non-developer members of this
list confused, disoriented, and mildly annoyed. If this might be you, I
urge you - delete this email now and pretend you never received it :]
***

Evening, everyone. I just wanted to let you all know about some
open-source code that is now available here: http://ion.dev.java.net.

This code comes from the I/ON Internet Video Console application
available through our website at: http://openvision.tv
I/ON ("eye-on") combines RSS aggregation with media management and
playback to create a very compelling way to find and watch video on the
web - in other words, it does videoblogging, podcasting, and bit
torrent.  Think of I/ON as the open-source, Java-based alternative to
iTunes, FireAnt, iPodderX, or any of the other "-casting" or "-catcher"
apps out there.

I/ON was released under the GNU Public License, and we've been working
to get all the code out to developers like you in useful modules. Well,
we've finally some of the code that might be useful to some of you on
this list in what we call the...(are you ready?)"The I/ON Media
Player Framework"! I know its not a very exciting name, but what it
enables is. In short, the MPF wraps Quicktime for Java, Java Media
Framework, and, on Windows, Windows Media Player, and Macromedia Flash
Player. It allows you to call one simple API, and in return you get
back a Swing JPanel with a unified controller bar.

You can get the code through our Java.net
project using CVS, or just download the distribution ZIP from the
"Documents &
Files" section the site. Take a look at the
"MediaTest.java" sample file and you'll see how easy it is to use!

Just like the rest of I/ON, this code is available now under the GPL
license. So feel free to take the code, change it, and use it, just as
long as you contribute your work back out to the world for the general
good of
humanity. We would also be very grateful to have developers join our
project and contribute their own code, recommendations, and feedback.
This is still an in-progress effort, but we really do want to make I/ON
and the Media Player Framework a great solution for Java developers and
end-users around the world.

Thanks, and please contact me if you have any questions.

+Nathan

2005-10-16 Thread Jan McLaughlin
The remix is certainly my highest compliment (both given / received).

Inspiration is priceless.

How to monetize the priceless? Oh. Darnit. I didn't mean to change the
subject.

Media literacy. Listen to directors' / writers' commentaries on those
DVD's. Read criticism. Watch movies more than twice, once with the
sound off just for the shots / edits. Be engaged when watching and feel
what the media says to you physiologically.

Just riffin' in sleepy mode.

Sweet dreams, y'all.

[videoblogging] Over an hour of video a month - Article posted in webcast list

2005-10-16 Thread jim stewart

Hi All,
I've been hearing these sorts of predictions for about 8 years now but maybe this time it is happening .?

 http://publications.mediapost.com/?fuseaction=Articles.showArticle&art_aid=35165
Friday, October 14, 2005What Streaming Video Stats Mean--Maybe Not What You ThinkBy Mark NaplesGo ahead--admit it. The first thing you thought of when you heard thatso many men were streaming video in the wee hours and that more men than
women were streamers overall was, well, porn. That's what I thought of,too. After all, some analysts have insisted for years that as much as 40percent of all Web traffic is blue. It was true when I was at America
Online in the mid-1990s, even on their family-oriented pages. How untruecould it be today?       But, that's not the story here. At least it isn't according tocomScore, which released research results this week stating that more
than half of Internet users watched online video in June.       ComScore has assembled a panel of more than 2 million Internetusers who comprise a video ratings service that will be continuallytracked by their research analysts. The company has filtered out the
porn watchers, in order to provide better figures for those interestedin the media that we're in the business of buying and selling. If you'rein that business, shoo.       ComScore found that 94 million
U.S. Internet users, or 56percent of those on the Web, watched streaming video in June. ComScoredidn't rely only on data gathered in June in asserting that those whowatched video online did so for more than an hour--an average of 73
minutes per month for the quarter that ended June 30. They've beengathering these figures for months, because they're so sure that videoon the Web is the reason why TV is stagnant and the trickle of ad money
migrating onto the Web is poised to become a deluge. Go ahead and arguewith that one.       As broadband has finally expanded to reach beyond half of all UShouseholds, the number of video offerings on the Web has grown
tremendously. Advertisers have been right behind, leveraging theirbroadcast assets and building new, edgier creative to test as pre-rollvideo ads to be watched by consumers--a predictably more receptiveaudience online. You can easily understand why comScore thinks there is
an opportunity here.       "Think about the just-launched Video iPod, a device that enablesusers who pay $1.99 to download hit TV shows like 'Lost' or 'DesperateHousewives' the day after they air, commercial-free," said Erin Hunter,
senior vice president, media and entertainment, comScore Media Metrix."Now, what do advertisers think that might do to the 30-second spot?"       For my money, it's an opportunity for advertisers who want to
reach men, especially. While males make up almost exactly half the Webaudience, they're 61 percent--almost two-thirds--of Web video streamers(Side note: Am I the only one who remembers when so-called "streamies"
were hot? All those predictions about what was definitely going tohappen by 2003 look like they may begin happening in 2006. Kooky, huh?)The folks at ESPN.com and MarketWatch were ahead of the curve. It's been
well over a year since they launched their streaming videoproducts--knowing fully how much their predominantly male audience loveshighlights and tolerates cool, branded advertising for cars and suchthat make their days online look more like the TV they watch over dinner
when they get home.       Why else do you think that online video is so important duringmarket hours, give or take a little on either side? From 10 a.m. to 4p.m., coast to coast, consumers--especially the higher-level
demographics and psychographics--are always going to be more difficultto reach on TV. But, they're online--using broadband connections.       Mark Naples is Managing Partner, WIT Strategy.

[videoblogging] Importing problem from iMovie to FCP

2005-10-16 Thread Jack Nelson
I know this has been covered before, but I've searched and cannot find the
answer. I have
a bunch of clips that were captured with iMovie and I'd like to use them in
FCP. When I
import them I have to render them or the audio won't play. What is the
workaround? I
thought it was the sequence setting in FCP, but I can't seem to get it to work.

[videoblogging] cinemalog - new vlogger

2005-10-16 Thread ronenwastaken
Hi. I'm Ronen. I've been running a private videolog since last April
called cinemalog, and I'm slowly (with some censorship;P) making it
public.

The downside is I'm technologically inept, and I can't find the right
audio compressor (video takes a bit to load, give it time) and I can't
accomplish anything near what I want to with the page.

At any rate, please check it out at http://cinemalog.net

I'd love to get any feedback, and certainly if any of the more
web-minded among you would be willing to lend me a hand, I'd be most
appreciative.

Thanks!

Ronen

[videoblogging] Don't read this! It's just more noise!

2005-10-16 Thread Anders Clerwall
Hi all,

I know this is just more noise for most of you, but I don't care :)

I'm unsubscribing from the videoblogging list and will only be reading
the vlogeurope list from now on, so if you're replying for some
reason, reply to all.
I will also be unsubscribing to a lot of vlogs. No hard feelings you guys.
Too much noise.. Too little substance.. Head hurts and wants back to a
small circle.

I didn't start videoblogging to...
...meet people, but I've met some and I loved it!
...become some sort of activist or evangelist.
...swap wasting time in front of the TV with wasting (more) time in
front of the computer.

I did however start videoblogging to...
...challenge my introvertion.
...experiment with video and editing.
...maybe find some outlet for playing music.

And all this lead to...
...an (in my opinion) overhyped video with a globe in it (although I
of course like it that people liked it.)
...(indirectly) me quitting my full-time job to try to find substance
in existing.
...two very cool trips to Amsterdam within the past month (VlogEurope
and new job.)
...some new very nice friends around the globe!
...me wanting to help build tools for you guys, which I will start to
do real soon.
...this egocentric mail.

So goodbye videoblogging@yahoogroups.com and a renewed hello to

[videoblogging] Google Video - best settings for creation

2005-10-16 Thread Rich Hand
I searched through the group, but could not find anything on:

What are the best settings for creating video that is directly
compatible for Google Video?

The best video as stated by Google video FAQ is -

--- Google vide FAQ start ---
Google accepts video in a wide range of popular formats. The fastest
way to get your videos into Google Video is to submit each file in
MPEG4 format with MP3 audio or MPEG2 with MP3.

While we also support other digital formats such as QuickTime, Windows
Media, and RealVideo, it's important to note that submitting your
files in these formats may significantly delay us from using them on
Google Video. In some cases, we may not be able to add your video at all.

Here are our preferred video specs:
NTSC (4:3) size and framerate, deinterlaced
Video Codec: MPEG2 or MPEG4 (MPEG4 preferred)
Video Bitrate: at least 260Kbps (750kbps preferred)
Audio Codec: MP3 vbr
Audio Bitrate: at least 70Kbps (128 Kbps preferred)
--- Google vide FAQ end ---

If someone could list the specific settings/codecs to achieve these
for both Quicktime and Windows MovieMaker that would help me greatly.

Thanks in advance.

[videoblogging] Re: Dont Record Music in the Background

2005-10-16 Thread Gena
I refuse to obey this. It is wrong, wrong, wrong! I will not stop
recording nor will I strip out audio because of a copyrighted song or
ringtone plays in the background.

I live in California. Do you know how many dang blasted ringtones I
hear (against my will) in a day? Each and every time one rings
somebody is getting paid.

I do not charge money nor do I make any profit from my blog. I have no
intention of doing so. I firmly believe in artists being compensated
for their work. I do respect copyright. I have music that I would love
to use.

I have Sly and the Family Stone's "Stand" (40+ years old and still
grooving) just begging to be used in a video. But I can't use it. I
can't begin to pay for just 20 seconds of it.

Is this what the recording industry wants? Only they can dictate what
and where music can be used? And there must be a dollar sign attached?

I will not comply with a foolish law. You cannot strip away music from
real life. You cannot charge people for being surrounded in music. I
have a right to access my musical heritage. This will go a long way to
stop passing music from one generation to the next.

We are getting closer to the time of "...This is the day that the
music died."

Somebody start the bail fund.

[videoblogging] vlogforum.org

2005-10-16 Thread Philip Clark
Hello team,

Just wanted to let you all know about yet another attempt at a videoblogging messageboard:

http://vlogforum.org

I don't have any big expectations for this. Videobloggers have shown their preference for the immediacy of the mailing list format. I just wanted to build a nice house for myself and my links.

There is one topic where I was hoping to get some help from people on the list. I've set up a category called "The Rec Room" with the goal of compiling a list of all the vlog memes, remix projects, content challenges and so on.

If you've ever taken part in one of these, or if you're planning to start one, would you mind dropping me a link so I can check it out -

http://vlogforum.org/viewforum.php?f=3

It would be cool to have an archive of as many of these as possible, before all this stuff blows up so huge that I can never find anything again.

Be sure to yell out the lyrics to "Happy Birthday" while they're hauling you away, so it

[videoblogging] Add yourself to the birthdays table!

2005-10-16 Thread Susan
Hey y'all! (now I really sound like I'm in Texas!)

Under the "database" link on the left, I've created a Birthdays
database.

Click on it, and please add your birthday to the list, in MM/DD format
so it's sortable. (you don't have to say what year! lol)

This way, when it's someone's birthday, if you're feeling creative,
maybe you can make a vlog post for them!

If I see someone on the list who doesn't have their birthday listed
after a while--beware--I'll be emailing you so I can add it to the
table!

Let's give good wishes to our fellow friend vloggers.

:)

Re: [videoblogging] Dont Record Music in the Background

2005-10-16 Thread Beth Agnew

Now this is just completely stupid. It's one thing to deliberately use
a song as part of your video, you chose it, you knew what you were
doing. But when some tune happens to show up in your video, that's fair
use, and they do not in any way deserve compensation for it. Don't
people have common sense any more?

Thanks, Andrew, for drawing our attention to this.

This is why the record companies and the music industry has such a bad
reputation. They're idiots. I recently tried to license a particular
song, going through all the right channels, to use in a presentation I
was giving. They made the process so difficult that I decided not to
use the piece, EVER.

[videoblogging] Re: logic in DVD creation?

2005-10-16 Thread Susan
Would you happen to have a DVD burner that came with Roxio Easy Media
Creator 6? (7 doesn't do it...) Though not the most complicated
software in the world, its DVD builder will let you make kinda tree
style menus... I can help if needed... though going backwards, to
previous clips etc, can't really do that. but hopefully at least
this is a step in the right direction.

Re: [videoblogging] logic in DVD creation?

2005-10-16 Thread duncan speakman

- to figure out how to create a DVD that uses
some sort of logic for determining what to play next.
do you mean it works out what to play based on previous user input? (or
maybe by what they have already seen? DVD Studio Pro lets you work with
some fairly simple programming (i.e. variables) to do this, but it is
has some annoying limits on how many variables you can use this
kind of programming can appear quite complicated if you haven;t used
things like  variables before though.

If you're just talking about a route through a flow chart that is
decided at thhe beginning of the journey it also lets you create
'stories' pretty simply, just select the series of clips you want to
play and tell the story what to show once it's finished (e.g. the
original menu)

[videoblogging] Dont Record Music in the Background

2005-10-16 Thread andrew michael baron

Excellent article in NYTimes about legal suits for filming the environment around you:http://tinyurl.com/89of6Jonathan Caouette may have originally shot "Tarnation" for as little as $218, but once the film won distribution, clearance costs ran roughly $230,000.Michael Vaccaro, a fourth grader, had just left P.S. 112 in Brooklyn and was headed home with his mother. Two filmmakers were in front of him, their camera capturing his every movement on video, when his mother's cellphone rang."It was such an indicator of today's culture," said Amy Sewell, a producer of "Mad Hot Ballroom," the documentary that follows New York City children as they learn ballroom dancing and prepare for a citywide contest. "Michael's mom had just asked him how school was, her cellphone rings, she answers it, and the look on his face says, 'I don't get to tell my mom about my day.' "In addition, the ringtone was "Gonna Fly Now," the theme from "Rocky," and the neighborhood was Bensonhurst. "How perfect was that?" Ms. Sewell said.Perfect, but a problem. Had the ringtone been a common telephone ring, the scene could have dropped into the final edit without a hitch, the moment providing a quick bit of emotional texture to the film. But EMI Music Publishing, which owns the rights to "Gonna Fly Now," was asking the first-time producer for $10,000 to use those six seconds.etc. . .

[videoblogging] logic in DVD creation?

2005-10-16 Thread Carl Weaver
Hi, folks. I have a new task - to figure out how to create a DVD that uses
some sort of logic for determining what to play next. I know, that's what
menus are for. This is going to be for an educational DVD with lots of menus
and routes to take, similar to a choose your own adventure book. I think
this may be too complicated for a DVD player but I am not sure. I am
thinking of this in terms of a flow chart, which is easy to see, but in
terms of laying it all out for making a video, I don't know a simple
construction method because then it has to be constructed in a linear
fashion. Possible to do but difficult and confusing.

So here's my question. Is there a tool that will let me break free from the
linear construction and allow me to create something that looks like a
flowchart? This ideal piece of software would let me make a menu once, then
have several video clips that lead to it, have loops that come back to each
other, etc., and output a DVD. I have no idea where to turn for this, but
knowing Steve Garfield, Verdi, Jay and others, someone will likely have it
knocked out inside of a week. How hard is programming, anyway?

I tried doing this in Pinnacle Studio and Adobe Premiere and it got wicked
complicated wicked fast.

Seriously though, what I am looking for is really just a different user
interface to make this simpler to construct. Something like Visio, but for
making interactive video. Hmm - "Video" - catchy name...

Thanks,
Carl

It is not a "made-up problem." Female text bloggers get this all muck
the time if they have have a high traffic site. And if they choose to
talk about certain issues, ewww.

Yes, if someone say they want to kick your ass it is not a threat to
you. And you are right, there is no real problem. It is a different
experience for women. Some of us will do exactly as you say you will,
either ignore it or ask for proof.

Some of us will wonder if the creep will use the Internet to find us.

> U.S. citizens are incubated in a culture of victimization, women
even more than men.

Ah. I will accept that there is a "small" element of our culture
that promotes victimization for profit. We ain't stupid either. There
are certain things women have to do to protect themselves.

One is to know that if some slug post or continues to post
inappropriate content on our blogs that is you (women folk)have the
tools (mentally and technologically) to stop him. It is not in your
mindset. It has to be in mine.

>It's just a shame we can't move on from it.

Yeah, I hear this one a lot from people who don't have to or don't
want to deal with the problem. Let's put blinders on and move forward.
I have to say that one statement produces anger in me that has nothing
to do with you. I do appreciate your comments. So I will take a walk
or clean something.

But shit still stinks if you move on or not.

[videoblogging] Vlog Wiki Glossary

2005-10-16 Thread Gena
I would like feedback on the glossary that I am creating for the
videoblogging community. I am trying to make sure that newbies can
understand the terminology as well as being accurate.

It is a work in progress. There are many more words that need to
appear but I would like to know if I am on the right track.

Thanks,

[videoblogging] Re: Men are pigs.....so what will that mean for women vloggers

2005-10-16 Thread Steve Watkins
Text harrasment on the net can be just as real as any other kind of
harrasment.

Whilst in practise the only practical way to deal with it may be to
develop a thick skin or other coping strategies, its worth wondering
if there are any elements of the system of the internet that could be
cahnged to reduce this stuff, or other human social ways of dealing
with such things.

Guns as a solution? Maybe that strategy would help if we were talking
about women defending their dignity in the wild west back in the day,
but if anything I think itd make the net even worse if everyone had
guns. People would be afraid to disrespect eachother in real life in
case they got shot, but the guns cant fire over the web so people
would release all their bottled up hate their instead, free from the
fear of being shot?

There are victim-culture elements present today in western society,
but there are also victims. Now I do object strongly when, for
example, crtiticising something a woman says on the net is immediately
assumed to be ant-women and the sex factor is brought up by the
'victim'. Its similar to minorities playing the race card, it does
happen, and its not right. If I have a go at someone over issues
unrealted to what sex they happen to be, I am not going to take kindly
to being called a woman-hater.

I wouldn't say this topic is retarded.  It NEEDS to be talked about.
There's not that many (ratio-wise) female vloggers out there right
now; and though personally I am comfy with posting my videos right
now, I hope that never changes.
Ok, sorry.   Continue.  I'll just say this.  It seems
like a made-up problem right now, a "what-if" type thing that isn't
worth worrying about.  Has anyone really been harassed because
they posted a video of themselves?  And if so, is it necessary to
worry about that?  If someone posted a comment on one of my videos
and said they thought I sucked and wanted to kick my ass, I think I'd
just giggle a little and move on.  Not because I'm a tough guy,
because nothing will ever happen.  It's an empty threat, like
every threat on the internet.  And if someone told me they could
suck their own cock, well, of course you have to demand proof!
What a lost opportunity!

U.S. citizens are incubated in a culture of victimization, women even
more than men.  It's just a shame we can't move on from it.

All of this reminds me how stupid gun control laws are.  If every
woman was required to carry a handgun we wouldn't be having this
discussion.

This edges on something that has fascinated me for months now.

There seems to be a strange discontinuity between the ideas of "UK
resident" and "TV licence payer". The BBC seems to be explicitly
making its material available to the first of these disjoint groups,
instead of (the apparently more suitable) second group. Sure these
groups largely overlap, but THEY ARE NOT THE SAME.

The BBC TV licence service doesn't like to admit it, but there are
people in the UK who do not pay a TV licence fee. Usually this is
because these people have no TV.

My suggestion (which seems on the surface, to me, to be a better one
all round) is that this material instead be limited not to UK
residents but to TV licence payers. This has several potential
advantages:

1. It realigns the responsibilities and the logical basis of the
limitation.

2. Crazy and unworkable geo-ip schemes need not apply. Simply use the
existing TV licence number as a login.

3. It opens the possibility of selling UK TV licences outside the UK!

Currently the UK TV licence costs roughly GBP 10 (that's about USD 18)
per month. That sounds like a frickin' good deal for access to the
whole BBC back catalogue, if they were to open it up.

The BBC wants cash. You lot want content. Let's all lobby the BBC
to "do the right thing".

Many people here seem to be forgetting "the long tail" all over again.

Please remember that one of the keys to this is TIME. A program
broadcast on TV is just available once, when it is actually playing. A
program on a service like iTunes is available for _years_.

OK, so 1.5 million people love a show and buy it as it is released.
Then some of them mention it in conversation to others who have never
heard of it, or have forgotten it, or weren't interested the first
time, or whatever. Given time, these things spread. Sales continue.
New markets open.

It's naive to assume that publishing via download is much at all like
publishing by broadcast.

As a simple example, imagine you are talking late one night, and one
of your friends casually mentions some "classic" scene from a Simpsons
cartoon. You can vaguely remember it, but between you all you can't quite
agree on _exactly_ what happened.

Would _you_ pay $1 or $2 to both enjoy the episode again and solve that
argument then and there? Have you seen how much money people pay for
mobile ringtones and other ephemera?

[videoblogging] Re: How do you explain that ?

2005-10-16 Thread Susan
Hmm... well, I would say the opposite. My vlog is open to the
public, and I'm lucky to get one comment a post. (Then again, read
the other thread on females to get an idea of why I don't get
comments...) My regular text blog is closed to the public--less than
50 people have access to read it--and I get lots more comments there.

I think tools like FireANT that allow people to view vlog posts one-
after-another tend to curb people from making comments, because they
can just sit on the couch and watch all the vlog posts without having
to touch their keyboard.

Want a funny visual? Susan, sitting on the couch, crocheting a new
winter blanket, with her laptop on the coffee table, and the day's
different vlog posts playing their way out on her screen while she
works.

This kind of effect definately happened for me. I happened to read a
bit about a show called "Firefly" that I had never heard about which
has never aired on TV here (at least on any of the channels we get). I
downloaded a couple of episodes from the internet and loved the show,
but got fed up with watching a lurch-and-stutter version. So I
bought the DVD boxed set.

If i'd been able to download a legit version that was guaranteed to
play nice, I'd have probably paid to do that too.

Everyone wins.

[videoblogging] Re: Men are pigs.....so what will that mean for women vloggers

2005-10-16 Thread Susan
So this thread explains a lot--my vlog doesn't get a whole lot of
hits because not only are my posts boring, but I'm not the most
attractive woman in the world.

But wait--I'm not seen in 95% of my vlog posts.

I wouldn't say this topic is retarded. It NEEDS to be talked about.
There's not that many (ratio-wise) female vloggers out there right
now; and though personally I am comfy with posting my videos right
now, I hope that never changes.

For me, blogging started on LiveJournal, back in 2000. Back then,
people were on there because they wanted to be--because they wanted
to journal--not to "flame" or harass others. Then the teenagers and
stay-at-home moms discovered LJ... and well, the rest is drama-queen
history. I'm not really thrilled with the company there now. That's
why I have my own blog, on my own website, that next-to-no one has
access to.

My point is this--it's not just the men who harass the women--the
women harass the hell out of each other, too.

[videoblogging] Re: the most prolific vlogger

2005-10-16 Thread Susan
I've been posting pretty much one video a day for over a month
now... but I certainly don't put the time into the textual part of
each post like Bev does. She's a great lady!

[videoblogging] Narrowcasting

[videoblogging] turnaround for a blog submitted as a podcast, to iTunes?

2005-10-16 Thread B Yen
I submitted my blog to iTunes as a Podacast, last Wednesday. (http://
jumplive.blogspot.com) It still hasn't shown up in iTunes, "Search
Music Store". I heard it takes 48 hrs. What is the turnaround,
everyone else is experiencing?

I submitted as "feed", the one by Feedburner.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Men are pigs.....so what will that mean for women vloggers

2005-10-16 Thread Deirdre Straughan

I don't have much to add to the wise statements already made in this
thread, but can tell you that jerks have been part of the Internet
since Day 2. Not Day 1. Day 1, for the general public, was the
CompuServe CB forums which had clearly-labelled adult channels in which
anyone identifying herself (or himself) as female was bound to be
propositioned - because there were so few of us! But the overall
population was so small that we knew each other, at least as a familiar
CB-style handle, and sometimes even met up in person.

Day 2 was the proliferation of CompuServe members, and Internet
denizens in general. On CompuServe I was once asked for a private chat
in a technical forum. This had never happened before, so I figured the
person had some deep, dark technical question to ask me. "I can suck my
own cock!" he immediately announced. I was so startled that I just
dropped out of the chat, but soon regretted not having demanded that he
prove it. ; )

Anonymity causes that kind of weird stuff to happen. Videobloggers turn
anonymity on its head: we are putting our real selves (or some
facsimile thereof) right out there, and inviting everyone to see and
interact with us. Whatever we do can be easily traced back to a real
person - most of us are even very open about where we live etc., so
presumably anyone could "get to" us. And yet we all seem to feel pretty
secure about that. Perhaps because of our non-secret identities, we're
mostly pretty nice to each other (yeah, we have our moments, but
compare what goes on here to the average Usenet group!) and to the
world in general.

So - thought for a sleepy Sunday morning - maybe videoblogging has a hope of bringing civility to the Internet.
