I'm no webpage designer at ALL, but I enjoy the efficiency of being able to post school projects and letting my out-of-town advisor access them with ease! I'm open to any and all

This is not the place to complain. Contact the author directly. Free

Your speech has not been limited. If you feel this bad about it, post your

That is, after all, how the web works.

Bre and I are coming into the big NYC Tuesday,
December 20, and we were hoping to have a vloggerific
happy hour with anyone who would like to attend! I am
especially excited about this trip, as it will be my
first time meeting many of you in actual (not virtual)
real- life! We will be flying into JFK Airport on American flight 268
around 4:18 and will plane to arrive at Cellar Bar by 7:00 on the subway.

We would love to see all of you NYC peeps, so if you can't make
it that night and would still like to hang out, call
Bre's cell--we will be in town until January 1.

 Cellar is at 325 E 14th

Yeah and if you're in Japan it's mid mornings on Wednesday and
Europe it's very early Wednesday. Actually since we have a pretty
international group maybe the times should be posted in GMT rather
than EST? Or would that be even more confusing? Since I've been
making friends overseas (because of video blogging!) I've found my
Mac OS clock widget to be very handy. I have one set up for each of
5 time zones. For some reason the world seems like a much smaller

2005-12-15 Thread unionw

Jay: As a "newbie"
with Videoblogging, and as an experienced photographer and videographer, I find
the concept understandable but need a glossary to understand all the e-mails.
Philosophically there seems to be two schools of thought; that which targets a
Vlog being essentially a personal brief telecast - and those that feel it
shouldn't be that structured . I presume good taste and easy "Viewability" are
the guide posts I should try and work within.
One other thing. I initially sought a host for "Blogging" and selected
1and1.com which doe not host domains needing streaming video. How does "Hosting
a Vlog and a Blog work" considering I've registered STARKBLOG.COM AND
STARKVLOG.COM domains with 1and1.com.
Is there ever a time when I might use a phone to communicate rather than
e-mail?

[videoblogging] Another bug in FeedBurner stats?

2005-12-15 Thread LeanBackVids.com
I'm beginning to wonder what happened to FeedBurner's validity. It
all started with the bloated Mefeedia numbers, but now I'm seeing
other aggregators get reported wrong (or at least I have good reason
to think so).

In less than a few days, each of my feeds have increased due to odd
readers (not iTunes, FireANT or Mefeedia). Neither My Yahoo nor
Google Desktop has ever been represented very high, but now they are a
major chuck of the pie. The fact that my server stats have not
deviated from the norm and do not show many referrals from these sites
makes me think it is another bug.

Here are my suspicious numbers...

LeanBackVids = 889 from My Yahoo (yeah right!)
VlogMap = 48 from Google Desktop (doubt it)
Ridertech = 36 from My Yahoo (slight chance)

This leads me to a point I made a while back... What happens if a
person wants to move off FeedBurner? The only answer I can come up
with is that you'd be screwed. Oh well, bloated numbers are better
than when the LBV feed got locked up in iTunes and we lost half our
readers.

Not so sure about that.

I long thought feedburner was under-reporting. At least according to
my stats. I believe it's do to both services like blogines and the
fact that RSS aggregators don't hit your feed everyday. I sort of
expected numbers would rise after they started inproving tracking.
Probably the best thing to do would be to start putting a tracking
image or something in the feed so you can track unique reads of a
post over multiple days... This instead of requests or using an
API... this would give you a better idea of how many people were
reading your feed daily, every other day or once a week in addittion
to giving more accurate subscriber stats... Then many of you have
unique videos and unique images in your feed what do you think?

I guess, but 889 readers (84%) from My Yahoo seems very suspicious.

VlogMap's Blog was featured on the default My Yahoo page a few months
ago and we didn't even get that many new readers then. Now VlogMap's
feed shows a ton of readers from Google Desktop (48%)?

Until I see a traffic increase on my server stats, I'm sticking to my
bug theory.

As for the image suggestion, each of our videos already has an image
associated with it. It doesn't help much since the total number of
server requests from FeedBurner has never exceeded the listed number
of readers (for any of my sites).

Of course, that is probably due to caching.

You all have done an amazing job making this work.My vlog will be dog focused, as I play Frisbee with my dogs professionally, and am moving into regular old pet training, with a slight twist: not obedience, but interaction. Anyway, I am currently vlogging @ http://k9disc.blip.tv . The old k9athlete site http://k9athlete.com has been up for over 7 years and has given me unbelievable opportunities to travel and teach. It has been used as a resource on at least 5 continents (from email correspondence). It is time to take it to the next level.I plan on bringing some of our dog knowledge to the masses with my vlogs, and if I am diligent with dragging my camera along to events and goings on, I should be able to provide quite a bit of comic relief as well. Can someone point me to a good breakdown of imovie export settings? I am having some problems and could use some solid information. I'd be happy to take that info offline, but it might be a good idea to post it again for all of us noobs...Thanks again for all the work you do.Cheers, Ron Watsonhttp://pawsitivevybe.comhttp://k9disc.comhttp://k9athlete.comhttp://k9disc.blip.tv On Dec 15, 2005, at 10:49 AM, Steve Garfield wrote:You won't need streaming. On Dec 15, 2005, at 10:20 AM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I initially sought a host for "Blogging" and selected 1and1.com which doe not host domains needing streaming video. [videoblogging] Re: Another bug in FeedBurner stats?

2005-12-15 Thread Bill Streeter
I have no idea if they're stats are accurate or not. According to
their stats subscriptions have been pretty flat for about a month
now. No major spikes or dips. According to what they say on their
site they have some kind of algorithm so they aren't counting the
same client twice etc. But I gotta wonder, that with all the
variables involved if there couldn't be some mistakes made. I don't
really give as much weight to the subscriber numbers as much as
actual downloads; which is probably a closer representation of your
audience. But it's hard to account for the people who download
something every time they want to view I guess, rather than keeping
files locally for review. And I'm pretty sure that there are a lot
of people who do this, especially those who are less tech savvy. So
really I don't really see how you can get a very accurate number for
you audience. The best you can do is ballpark it. But I would bet
that you can at least safely assume that at least twice as many
people are downloading your videos as you have subscribers, since
the whole RSS aggregation thing hasn't really penetrated very deep
in to popular consciousness yet.

I'm beginning to wonder what happened to FeedBurner's validity. It
all started with the bloated Mefeedia numbers, but now I'm seeing
other aggregators get reported wrong (or at least I have good reason

Just to be clear: the Mefeedia numbers were wrong for 6 vlogs for 1
day. The problem is fixed now, the Mefeedia numbers are correct and
real for everyone. :)

Matt, you can email Feedburner with questions like this. They're very
helpful and I'm sure they'll answer your questions in detail.

[videoblogging] Re: Another bug in FeedBurner stats?

2005-12-15 Thread LeanBackVids.com
I couldn't agree more. Actual downloads is a much better statistic
than feed subscribers. The problem is that we don't share those numbers.

Other than the fact that many vloggers use the VlogMap-FeedBurner page
as a way to see rankings, I like to analyze my own FeedBurner
readership numbers to see what the penetration for each aggregator is.
It is disappointing to me when I cannot justify the numbers that are
being reported, especially since I'm publicizing this feature on VlogMap.

I've always thought that the FB numbers were at best slightly
accurate, but at least we were all on the same playing field. Even
the few aggregators that over/under reported were the same for all of
us. However, that is not true the past few days. LeanBackVids has
unfairly jumped in the ranks due to a huge increase in My Yahoo
readers, but others have not. I just can't see how LBV got over 80%
of its readers from a aggregator that was barely listed two days ago.

Sucks - maybe the 2nd-most popular feature on VlogMap has become less
valuable overnight.

really I don't really see how you can get a very accurate number for

I am getting to the point where my Sanyo Xacti MPEG-4 camera is reaching its limit based on my desire to do some more advanced video projects. The two biggest issues are its lack of optical zoom and its poor performance in low light situations. I have looked at the new Sony Hi Def camera, but it might be overkill to fix my two biggest issues.

I’d love to suggestions in what a good next camera could be for my needs. (create a ongoing five minute themed program in my new “studio in the garage” setup). I am attending CES this year, so I will have my eye on what’s coming, but some less biased opinions would be helpful.

Does anyone know how to convert VOB files to a format I can read and
then compress? I was able to copy the files off
the DVD and onto my
hard drive so I don't have to decrypt them (and
it's a movie I made so
I'm not violating copyright), but now I'm
stuck.

I just want to take the movie off the DVD and
compress it into
something smaller, to around 500 - 700 MB. Then I
want to put clips
from the movie up on the Web. But Premiere won't
read the VOB files. I
tried http://jmoney.byethost15.com/PARTS%202%20and%203/PART2.htm
but
no luck. Dr. Divx is no longer available.

Thanks!

Re: [videoblogging] My next videocamera?

2005-12-15 Thread Richard Baguley
Allen, a lot depends on budget, etc, but the Sony HC90 might be a good
choice: it has a largeish CCD, which usually means low light performance
is better. There's a review here:
http://www.camcorderinfo.com/content/Sony-DCR-HC90-Camcorder-Review.htm

The HC1 is a great camcorder (review and comments on low-light
performance here:
http://www.camcorderinfo.com/content/Sony-DCR-HC90-Camcorder-Review.htm),
but I'm not sure it is the right one for you. If you just want it for
your videoblogging, there's no need to go HD. Editing HD is a pain,
especially on a notebook. But if you want to have a HD copy for other
uses, it's not a bad choice. The low light performance is pretty good:
it would have done a much better job on the elevator blog entry than
your existing camcorder, for instance.

Feel free to email me directly if you have more questions...

(disclaimer: I write for Camcorderinfo.com and others about video and
camcorders, but I didn't write the review)

Allen Weiner wrote:

I’d love to suggestions in what a good next camera could be for my

ryan posted a good overview for videoblogging cameras at freevlog:

this is assuming you want to do on the spot recording.
probably opne of the samller mini-DV's.

if youre trying to make movies...then you definitely need to think
about getting one of those cool HD cameras.

Subject: Manufacturer Picked For $100 LaptopTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

IZ Reloaded writes MIT has picked Taiwanese firm Quanta to manufacture its $100 laptop. From PCWorld: 'Under terms of an agreement with One Laptop Per Child, Quanta will devote engineering resources to develop the $100 notebook design during the first half of the year, according to a statement issued by the group. At the same time, Quanta and the non-profit organization will explore the production of a commercial version of the laptop.' Apparently they don't think it's ineffectual either.

Yep, this is a known issue:

http://forums.feedburner.com/viewtopic.php?t=1829

Yahoo's working on correcting their reporting. Since we just pass
through whatever number Yahoo passes to us (ditto the other web-based
aggregators like Bloglines, NewsGator Online), we're not doing any
interpretation of the centralized services numbers and therefore can't
really apply any corrective filter to those numbers if/when they're
mis-reported.

I expect Yahoo will correct this in short order, and things will go
back to normal. As always, if anyone is seeing behavior that looks
funky, just drop us a line at feedback -at- feedburner.com.

[videoblogging] Help me out with my project - It'll only take you two minutes

2005-12-15 Thread Andreas Haugstrup Pedersen
Hey,

I'm busy procrastinating my current school project. My focus is of course
videoblogging and I wanted to call upon the group to help me with a layout
idea.

I want to have a quote from a videoblogger at the top of each chapter. So
I'm asking anyone who wants to help a poor student out to send me an
e-mail at andreas [AT] solitude [DOT] dk where you:

   - Finish the sentence Videoblogging is... (be serious, be creative, be
funny - up to you)
   - Include your videoblog URL

With one optional step (I haven't decided if I want to use photos in my
layout yet):

   - Include or link to a photo (headshot, or something video related). Must
be print quality and must work in black/white (I will do the conversion)

Send it to my personal e-mail (andreas [AT] solitude [DOT] dk) so it won't
clutter up the list or start some new definition debate.

What will you get out of this? Not much. As much as I like to think
everyone is really interested in my project hardly anyone will read it.
The project will be downloadable from the university project database (and
it will be in Danish), but in reality not many apart from my advisor and
his cronies will read the project.

If I get more than one response I will post all responses to my blog. It
hardly has any readers so I can't promise you fame or glory. Just
gratitude.

I hope to hear from some of you.

I think the idea in spelling it out like that is to prevent spam
bots from picking it up. So just replace the [AT] with @ and the
[DOT] with a . and remove all the spaces and that's his address.
It's a common practice and I can sypathize, I avoid publishing my

Re: [videoblogging] RSS Subscriptions + Email

2005-12-15 Thread Ed Yarrish

I am one of those lite users and I am still evaluating the new gmail
feature. I've never seen the value, in terms of extra time and
effort, of installing a feed reader.

I deleted some of the items that gmail included, but kept some others
just to see how the feature works. I don't really know how to add
items yet.

I use the Firefox browser, and I like the latest headlines feeds from
British broadcasting. Having something like that with other feeds
that I might find interesting would be convenient if the add and delete
mechanics were simple.

I think this makes a lot of sense for many users. The key is
to know the audience make-up... and undoubtedly their are many who
really would prefer not to download, install, configure and learn to
use an RSS Reader application or even another web based
aggregator. These people may not feel that the primary benefit of
such applications, which is feed management/download scheduling, is
enough to make them add and use another piece of software. This
is because we have many 'lite' users who may only be subscribed to
fewer than 10 or 20 RSS channels. We already know that most everyone frequently uses email... its
where most attention seems to be across many user types. If fresh
new posts are emailed to you and also provide ways to manage your
subscriptions, then this seems like a big fat obvious service that many
will appreciate.

[videoblogging] Vlog Calendar 2006

2005-12-15 Thread Gabriel McIntyre

Hello everyone,I've created the vlogger calendar 2006. You can buy it from the Xolo.TV cafe press store.http://www.cafepress.com/xolotvThere are 2:One has got a different picture for every month $17.99 (Cafe press takes a chunk off to make it.)The other is just one picture but only $6.99Everything we get from the store we are giving to charity, so feel free to buy more than one item. We are going to be making more items during the week. If you want to spread the love you can copy and paste the code below onto your blog to link to the store.a href=""http://www.cafepress.com/xolotv">http://www.cafepress.com/xolotv" target="_blank" alt="Vlogger Calendar"img src=""http://www.xolo.tv/watchme/covercalendar.jpg">http://www.xolo.tv/watchme/covercalendar.jpg" alt="Get your own lovvger calendar" //aHappy Holidays and Happy New Year.Gabe Machttp://www.xolo.tv

I thought I'd try my hand at creating a favorites vlog. I'll dally

I'm really drawn to, and appreciate. I'll collect, and share them

[videoblogging] Re: hi all new vlogger intro

2005-12-15 Thread Gena
Howdy, Yes, the debate goes on. Is it live or Memorex? Ketchup or
Catsup? Personal narrative or experimental? Structure or free form?

Yup. For every video genre there are off-roads. Especially in
videoblogging. At least for now before a corporate overlay is forced
upon us. I'm not normally this wifty but IMHO videoblogging is not a
fixed form, not yet.

You can do whatever you want or dream of, even if it is standing
before a camera and saying what is on you mind. To some that is a
scary threatening thing. To others, a total bore.

Doesn't really matter what the group mind thinks because we all have
our own vision. Draw from what you want to do and then do it. No
gatekeepers, no fences. Add to the conversation - show me your stuff.

Andy and DDN folks

For those who are interested, I've posted a short edited video from my
work with the San Bartolo archaeology team in 2004.

http://www.gomaya.com/glyph/archives/001553.html#001553

I couldn't really release it until National Geographic made the
announcement yesterday. I was not working under contract with them but
they control release on their funded projects. It collapses 5 weeks
into 4 minutes, and was edited and scored (Garageband) in the jungle
of Guatemala.

It has some videoblog characteristics (I introduce it speaking to the
camera) but the delay may disqualify it. It may be more of an
ethnographic music video about the strange tribe of archaeologists.

Whatever. Enjoy.

Best

[videoblogging] Wall Street Journal: Videoblogging

2005-12-15 Thread Steve Garfield
Vlogger (noun): Blogger
With Video Camera
By DIONNE SEARCEY
Staff Reporter of THE WALL STREET JOURNAL
December 16, 2005; Page B1

http://tinyurl.com/dnbm8

On another vlog, stevegarfield.blogs.com/videoblog/, Steve Garfield
screens daily life in his Boston home. He calls it The Carol and Steve
Show, where viewers can watch Mr. Garfield and his wife, Carol,
opening Hanukkah gifts or delighting in their leftover Thanksgiving
sweet-potato soufflé. The show is in its 51st episode.

For Mr. Garfield, vlogging is an easy outlet for his creative side.
It's unlikely a major network would pick up 'The Carol and Steve Show,
but the Internet allows him to broadcast his show as much as he wants
along with other videos that teach would-be vloggers basic video
techniques, as well a show he narrates called Vlog Soup pointing out
his top picks among new vlogs.

It's part of the democratization of media, says Mr. Garfield. It
gives people the tools to express themselves and be creative in all
different ways.

Mr. Garfield, who in the past produced public-access shows, is making a
career, of sorts, out of vlogging, serving as a correspondent for a
popular blog (rocketboom.com/vlog) that includes homemade news reports,
and he is paid to create vlogs for others.

One of Mr. Garfield's clients is Boston City Councilor John Tobin,
whose vlog, votejohntobin.com/blog/Videos, gives regular updates on
issues for his constituents. Leading up to the November election Mr.
Tobin updated the vlog every day.

Viewers could tune in and watch him point out potholes in neighborhood
roadways and show busy intersections where he wanted to install speed
bumps. On Election Day, he received 706 hits on his site, nearly double
the amount of hits for his vlog in November of the prior year.
