Re: [videoblogging] Long and File Size: Revisiting the question

2006-01-16 Thread Andreas Haugstrup
Generally speaking I'm the same as Josh Kinberg: 3 mins/ 25 MB.

But it depends on a lot of factors. If there is a good text description of
the video I'm more likely to watch, if I don't know what I'll be watching
my patience with the piece is very low. Often I don't click through at all
because the payoff is not obvious.

For anything longer than 3 mins that also look really really good I'll
download and watch later. That usually mean sit on my desktop for a week
or two before watching. Then you and I lose out on the great things about
videoblogging (feedback, networked communication) because I switch from
viewing it as a blog to viewing it as I would a tv program.

 boring).

Just curious about the answers-- someone recently said they wanted
longer than 10-minute vlogs, because they wanted to really sit down
and watch stuff, but I wonder about that. A 10 minute vlog is 30 MB,
easily. A 40 minute vlog would be almost 100 MB? Is that worth your
time, bandwidth, and download speed? Would it make more sense to

Perhaps I confused what Andreas was saying. I thought he meant
software authors should only provide two codecs and have the user
figure out the rest. He may have meant a content authors, in which
 case I'm mistaken.

Yes, I meant content authors. The videoblogger should only ever have to
provide one, perhaps two formats (because Apple and Microsoft will never
think what's best for the consumer). The user's software should handle all
necessary conversations to make sure the content plays on that user's

Re: [videoblogging] Long and File Size: Revisiting the question

2006-01-16 Thread Markus Sandy
i regularly download files in the 80-100Mb via fireant, although most
are smaller.

i tend to be less patient in the browser. if there is a feed, i'll use
that instead if it makes sense. if not, i'll download it in the
background. i generally multi-task and so rarely care how long the
download takes. i prefer not to view vids in the browser, i prefer a
sizable player like fireant.

in general, i don't really care how big or how long a video is as long
as the content is worth it (there is a limit of course, I'm not looking
to download gigabyte files just yet). very few pieces of media can hold
my full attention for 40 minutes anymore (especially movies and TV).

i don't generally stop watching when it gets long, i usually just fast
forward.

if i do stop, i generally stop watching a video within the first 30
seconds. If it has not captured me by then (or if it's not from a friend
perhaps), I delete it and move on to the next. again, size is not much
of a factor here.

while i constantly find great stuff, most videos fail to capture my
attention these days (this is more of a statement about the increase in
the number of videos, not a decrease in quality - there's just a lot
more stuff out there these days)

the main reason for stopping a download: i found something else I want
sooner

my download speed is usually in the 512Kb-1Mb range with no other limits
(e.g., total downloads not limited). while this is not super fast, i
would probably feel different (i.e., more selective) if I had slower access.

i like streaming for the video conferences, but it does not seem to make
much sense to me for vlogs (from a viewer standpoint, it stops and
starts too much and it's usually hard to fast forward).

hope that helps

Why pack them all together into a 15 min. video? Why not let them each exist as separate videos that can be downloaded quicker and easier? You may as well simply link to the originals too in order to credit the creators.

i'd agree with josh/andreas that over 3 mins is often too much, i don't think this is directly related to my attention span (e.g. i'm a big tarkovsky fan), but purely due to the fact that i'm usually at my computer and multitasking when i watch them, and often have lots of them to watch!!
in terms of file size i guess i'm still pretty old school, i feel bad if i post a video over 5mb!, but saying that i often get annoyed with people making huge files for stuff that doesn;t contain much visual information, what is all filesize used for? it just clogs up my fireant queue (although now the mac version has browsing things could be getting better for me !! )

message on the tiniest of screens?

"Television-style advertising
is coming to a mobile phone near you. It is part of a broader push by marketers
to create a new generation of "up close and personal" ads by delivering video,

And they don't answer the obvious question: Why in the world would
consumers tell advertisers their location? And the you get great quotes
like this:

Ujjal Kohli, chief executive of Rhythm NewMedia, a start-up in Mountain
View, Calif., which is developing video advertising technology, said he
had hopes that mobile marketing, by being very personal and intimate,
could solve some of the frustrations advertisers have with consumers
ignoring television commercials - no matter how big the monitor.

Maybe, just maybe, consumers will be equally frustrated by having their
cell phone go off 20 times during a walk through the mall. Maybe, just
maybe, he should be worrying about the frustrations of the consumer, not
the advertiser. Maybe, just maybe, happy consumers make happy corporate
execs. Despite my degree in communication and a possible future career in
the area I will not shed tears for the frustrations of the advertising
exec.

[videoblogging] re: Long and File Size: Revisiting the question

2006-01-16 Thread Nerissa \(TheVideoQueen\)

I find myself revisiting this question every time I post a large file to my vlog. How much is too much? At what point will you (personally, yourself, as a vlog watcher): 1) Stop downloading the file. 2) Stop watching the movie (how many minutes, assuming it's not too boring). Just curious about the answers-- someone recently said they wanted longer than 10-minute vlogs, because they wanted to really sit down and watch stuff, but I wonder about that. A 10 minute vlog is 30 MB, easily. A 40 minute vlog would be almost 100 MB? Is that worth your time, bandwidth, and download speed? Would it make more sense to stream instead? --Stephanie Stephanie Bryant [EMAIL PROTECTED] Vlog: http://mortaine.blogspot.com Audioblog: http://bookramble.blogspot.com Hi Stephanie and all,I have two limits: pacing and download/buffer times. 1) I typically stop watching when the video loses my attention. They have a slow pace visually or in delivering information. This is subjective. But typically mainstream media can hold my attention longer than newbie videos becuase mainstream media has a certain pace-- and I like it. Now whethermainstream programs can keep me watching for longer than five minutes is another thing.2) I also don't even start to watchvideos if it takes more than a minute to
download/buffer UNLESS I know I want to see this video for some reason I read in the description. This is where format and file size come into play for me. I prefer streaming or progressive downloads, or small files (10mb) of wmv, mov, and mpg.I've spent 20 minutes watchign buffering, watching buffering, watching and buffering --just becuase Iwas riveted bythe content. But that downlaod/buffer time is a killer for most videos because the content doesn't grab me at video beginning.3) Another way to look at this is to ask your viewers what they want. If your viewers want more scenery, give it to them. I they want more info, give that to them. If they want your videos to share on their website-- make it possible. Listen to what they say abotu your videos or ask them for more detailed feedback. For example, drjoevitale.blogspot.com streams flv and is accessible to most people
without problems BUT is the content worhty of 2 minutes, 3 minutes or 15 minutes? I know most viewers just a want a glimpse so I try to keep posts short, moving and fun. But I also have a a great lead person who is riveting when he talks, but he also typically talks more than I want timewise. His readers are his viewers and no one seems to mind. He's got their attention and they love him. But he were a slow talker or boring ons screen then I may have cut jumps everywhere to keep thethe pertinant info moving along. The longest video I have up on his site is 15 minutes and I did it to show the entire adjustment session in real time. I kept the camera moving to stimulate visual movement and of course the video is narrated in real time and there is also good natured bantering going on that I knew his audience would love.Nebelungs.blogspot I keep those videos very short short becuase they are in mov format. I also dont want to keep my audience
wanting more. I dont want the audienceto ever fill up and get bored with watching Nona.My .02, NerissaNerissa Odenhttp://TheVideoQueen.comhttp://FreeMediaGuide.comhttp://FreeVideoCoding.comhttp://FreeVideoEditing.comhttp://Nebelungs.blogspot.comMy Groups:http://groups.yahoo.com/group/videobloggingbusiness/http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/videowomen/*

[videoblogging] What to buy and use; Editing software / tools / tapes / magazines /

2006-01-16 Thread usadutch2001
I think you are all eager to answer some newbie questions?
Yes I know they (newbies) keep coming over and over again and ask
the same old stupid questions.
But hey if you do not ask you never know what others think about it.
Well here it goes;

The ingredients so far

-Bought a digital videocam , Panasonic PV-GS150 3ccd minidv ,
http://tinyurl.com/7v93n
(also spare battery, UV filter, mono-pod, tapes and a 3W light no
microfoon yet)
-I'm building a website using WordPress http://vlogmatic.com
-Have content in my head and its around everywhere.
-I read the discussions about duration and publishing of video and
all the artistic issues with vlogs.
-Have a fast PC with windows XP sp2 and cable internet.

Then I got stuck on a few technical questions;

1. What the heck should I use to edit the video's with?

I have the free windows XP moviemaker but it is too limited for my
desire.
I know you can buy all sorts of add-ons but I believe there is no
development for moviemaker anymore.
However spending over $200 for editing software is not in the
budget. What is the next best alternative?
(Functions I like/need ; transitions, different fonts, use of
green-screen, audio editing, adding sounds and clips)
I have not yet decided on the publishing format.

Is Vegas movie studio + dvd platinum a good choice?
  Or
Pineaccle Studio media suite 10 ?

2. What are the must have software utility's and/or gadgets? you use
on a regular basis?

3. How many times can I use a tape?
(Consider it being a good quality tape)

4. Do you subscribe to any video magazines?

Ok for now these are my questions and I would appreciate any answers
very much.
Anything else i did not mention would be important to think of? (yup
a catch all question)

The idea here is that people who subscribe to The PAN are trusting us to provide 15 minutes of *Really Good* stuff, so they won't need them as separate chunks.

You should at least provide better text descriptions on the site and
in the feed. This will make it easier to trust that you are really
providing 15 min. of good stuff. Right now, I have no idea what stuff
is there until after I've viewed. Text descriptions are too often
overlooked by videobloggers. They are really helpful to the viewer
deciding if they want to download and also to search engines to help
make your content more findable.I agree with most of this. If it proves to be true that viewers won't watch a video until they've read something about it, we'll probably have to rethink our presentation. Although Rocketboom, Bottomunion, Human-Dog, etc. haven't seemed to have had a problem with a lack of text. We provide a list of the individual creators featured in the video, with links, so that's enough to get you started. But like I said, time will tell...

Plus 15 minutes is not that much for most commuters, who are a good portion of iPod video watchers. If you're watching the PAN in the morning on your way to work, you can stop it halfway through when you get to the office, then when you take lunch or go home at night, restart it right where you left off.

I guess that's a matter of opinion. I can't watch 15 min. of hardly
anything. I always prefer shorter bits to longer ones.Right, totally. It just so happens that this 15 minutes is a video doppelganger of what's going on inside my head a lot of the time, so it's a blast for me to watch it, and I usually want it to run longer when I see it. It's an interesting combination of content.

Not true. Rocketboom makes great use of text. There are always story
links for every episode. Textual descriptors, links, references. This
has been RB's presentation from day one. Outbound links help build
traffic and the text makes the entries more searchable. RB also uses
QT chapter tracks to easily skip around within the video to the
desired story link.

I think Bottom Union and Human Dog could make much better use of text.
I've never been quite sure why they don't.

How much is too much? At what point will you (personally, yourself, as
  a vlog watcher):
  1) Stop downloading the file.
  2) Stop watching the movie (how many minutes, assuming it's not too

I guess that's a matter of opinion. I can't watch 15 min. of hardlyanything. I always prefer shorter bits to longer ones.
interesting, since apps like fireANT's main benefit is downloading management which is most valuable if the video is larger (download overnight or while doing other things).if you are a fan of smaller chunks, then you could prob be happy watching videos on the web, no?
if your point is about attention span... ok. but it seems that adam made the point that this content will continue to be grabbed by a trusted audience who would love nothing more than content to fill their commute.
short, long... whatever. its not even worth debating since the wide audience consists of many different preferences. why ask why and all that. sullOn 1/16/06,

doesn't skip to the next video track in a playlist? That said, I do want to figure out QT chapters so they can easily skip a segment if they wish.Although I'm not so sure it will function on the iPod.
That would be cool if this feature were supported on the iPod. The idea here is that people who subscribe to The PAN are trusting us to provide 15 minutes of *Really Good* stuff, so they won't need them as separate chunks.
You should at least provide better text descriptions on the site andin the feed. This will make it easier to trust that you are reallyproviding 15 min. of good stuff. Right now, I have no idea what stuff
is there until after I've viewed. Text descriptions are too oftenoverlooked by videobloggers. They are really helpful to the viewerdeciding if they want to download and also to search engines to helpmake your content more findable.
Plus 15 minutes is not that much for most commuters, who are a good portion of iPod video watchers. If you're watching the PAN in the morning on your way to work, you can stop it halfway through when you get to the office, then when you take lunch or go home at night, restart it right where you left off.

[videoblogging] Re: Long and File Size: Revisiting the question

2006-01-16 Thread johngaltsjournal
Well, I wouldn't say I just can't get enough of large files, I just don't
really mind longer
videos.

Some people just make long videos, and if I enjoy them, I watch em! (yes, I'm
looking at
you, Mr. Richard Show.)

After watching the Pan, I can see being on the train and enjoying the
15min...chapter
markers would be nice on a portable device, but I also don't feel a need to
have their Pan
videos sent to me separately. There is something to be said for a curated
show-- much
like Liquid Television that used to be on MTV. (a compliation show of various
animators)
As time goes on, and Adam and Mica amass a large collection of original stuff,
this could
be a very fast-paced, entertaining 15min.

You would just have to keep up with the shows before it ate your harddrive
away. But that
goes for my feeds in general...they always pile up.

No. I am a fan of small chunks... but lots of them from lots of
different places and the ability to easily switch between them and
manipulate them, etc. Viewing video on the web never seems to allow me

Re: [videoblogging] Re: ipod conversion now built into iTunes

2006-01-16 Thread Michael Meiser
BTW, I've had the opportunity to try out the Apple iTunes convert to
ipod feature for video. As a test I converted one feature length
movie that had already been ripped from DVD as an mp4 yet was too
high res for the ipod. iTunes converted it to a m4v in about 12 hours
and it was about 700 mb. COnsidering this is my shit kicker 400 mhz
g4 server and it's running all sorts of media tools and aggregation
stuff I think it did quite well. In fact I think it was much better
than iSquint.

My only complaint is that apple needs import settings for video, not
just audio. I'd much prefer mp4 and I'd much prefer being able to
create a much larger size... say as high as 720 wide.

BTW, I also like that Apple creates a queue of videos to convert
not sure wether you can stop and restart this queue if you want to
quit iTunes of restart, my guess is not, but good enough. You can
just let it plug away in the background as other things are going on.

This will likely be very handy for converting old viral videos and
old vlog posts. Pretty sweet.

Oh, one other big problem I haven't figured out yet... It doesn't
seem to work with AVI's at all... or WMV or Real. iTunes won't even
allow them into the library. I don't know if this will change after I
install the DIVX QT component or... if I could find some sort of WMV
QT component I'd be one hell of a happy camper! There has to be a
way to import WMV's into Quicktime or Final Cut. Anyone?

I haven't been doing as much video editing as most of the people
here. This would really be dreamy. Being able to put ALL my videos
not just standard QT formats in iTunes... and being able to convert
them to m4v or mp4 for the iPod... McDreammy.

On a side note it's recently occured to me that I'm going to be so
sad when the next iPod video comes out... perhaps I bought to early.
I can almost guarentee the next ipod will have a) a bigger and wider
format screen... b) will do much higher resolution videos.

There might be the opportunity that the ROM will be updated on this
generation to support higher res formats but it's unlikely do to
hardware limitations... I have infact somehow gotten atleast one
video on the ipod, where the ipod couldn't keep up with the data rate
and it'd skip in fast action scenes... not sure how that happened.

My guess for the next video iPod would be a device the same size but
with nearly one whole side being a screen... a TOUCH screen that uses
mouse gestures and graphics to replicate the click wheel for both
volume and scrubbing touch screen menus too :) This by the end
of 2006 and possibly much sooner. ... MY other guess the fabled
networked ipod with direct aggregation from the web of things
subscribed to in the online web store but that's a bit much of a
dream. Possible... but unlikely.

Peace,

-Mike

But it still had to convert. Its just that the interface was simple

roughly the same for video on the iPod.

The user's software should
handle all
necessary conversations to make sure the content plays on that user's
external devices.

For me size does not matter (in videos)

However you got me mad if i have to download a 10 minute 50MB file
showing some dork answering his email thru a vlog using the
word whatever and like every 10 seconds.

It is not the question do you like long or short video's for me
it's more if the content is worth downloading.

So people use TAGS!! or descriptions, a picture as a teaser will get
me going too.

just my 2..whatever

1) Stop downloading the file.
2) Stop watching the movie (how many minutes, assuming it's
not too

Just curious about the answers-- someone recently said they

short, long... whatever. its
not even worth debating since the wide audience consists of many different
preferences. why ask why and all that.
Glad to hear you say that. My own feeling is
that if it's done well, it will hold my attention no matter how long.
Deirdre Straughan had one the other day that was a car trip to Dallas, the sort
of thing that would usually turn me off very soon (how interesting can Texas
highways be, anyway??), but it was so cleverly done, with great background music
that I enjoyed the whole thing.

Minnesota Stories generally last longer than a few
minutes and are delightful.

Bicycle Sidewalk is generally fun to watch, as are
Ravi's Drive Time interviews --and I can't figure out why I'm so taken
with Carl Weaver's dry, offbeat humor

By the same token, there are some very brief "artsy
fartsy" kinds of videos that don't do a thing for me, though when they are
clever Ican beimpressed.

Like Sull, I think it's all a matter of taste and
everybody's tastes are different. I prefer something that shows me
something I haven't seen before or presents something familiar in a new
light.I also like videos that give me a glimpse into someone's life,
like Susan's KityKity, or Doug's glimpse into his world in Providence, RI or
Missbhavens life in New York.

Also, with Rocketboom videos, you can click on the actual QT video
frame to launch the story links in a browser window, when played in a

Most people don't know this detail because it's not mentioned
anywhere and I haven't been able to come up with a comfortable
graphic to add on top of the video to make this apparent.

I'm thinking of adding a message on the begging frame, not sure.

You should at least provide better text descriptions on the site
 and
in the feed. This will make it easier to trust that you are really
providing 15 min. of good stuff. Right now, I have no idea what
 stuff
is there until after I've viewed. Text descriptions are too often
overlooked by videobloggers. They are really helpful to the viewer
deciding if they want to download and also to search engines to
 help
  make your content more findable.

I agree with most of this. If it proves to be true that viewers

Bottomunion, Human-Dog, etc. haven't seemed to have had a problem
with a lack of text. We provide a list of the individual creators
featured in the video, with links, so that's enough to get you
started. But like I said, time will tell...

Plus 15 minutes is not that much for most commuters, who are a
good portion of iPod video watchers. If you're watching the PAN
in the morning on your way to work, you can stop it halfway
through when you get to the office, then when you take lunch or
go home at night, restart it right where you left off.

  I guess that's a matter of opinion. I can't watch 15 min. of hardly
anything. I always prefer shorter bits to longer ones.

Right, totally. It just so happens that this 15 minutes is a
video doppelganger of what's going on inside my head a lot of the
time, so it's a blast for me to watch it, and I usually want it to
run longer when I see it. It's an interesting combination of
 content.

[videoblogging] Re: Long and File Size: Revisiting the question

2006-01-16 Thread Bill Streeter
I tend to like shorter too. But then again if something is really
good I often wish it was longer. I've been showing Nathan Millers
Bicycle Sidewalk to my wife via my ipod plugged into the TV and she
loves it. Her complaint is that it's too short! But then again
that's the difference between watching on a computer screen and
watching on a TV.

I would suspect that as more devices come along to allow aggregated
internet video content to be displayed on a television then there
will be a greater demand for longer videos.

On the creative side, I happen to love making short form stuff. I
mean I really love it. I love the callenge of keeping something
really interesting for 3 to 5 minutes. It's also a good format to
learn, experiment and make mistakes in. If you do something really
bad you haven't wasted too much of anyones time. But if you think
about it, before the Internet the only short form films one might
see on a regular basis was television commercials. And that's a real
waste of a perfectly good format.

Now you might also consider the fact that there are several longer
format video blogs that seem to be popular (like Democracy Now) but
those tend to have a lot of very high quality content. So yeah if
you have enough great content to carry a long format then by all
means put it out there!!

Re: [videoblogging] Godaddy question

2006-01-16 Thread Adam Quirk

I use both Godaddy and Dreamhost, and I'll always recommend Dreamhost over Godaddy. I've had a terrible amount of downtime with Godaddy since I began using them for a video site last year. It seems that when a certain amount of people try to download the same video on a Godaddy server, it just automatically shuts down and you have to manually reboot the server.
Unacceptable.Go Dreamhost. They just increased their bandwidth allowances to some ridiculously large number too.If you want a code for a deal there, I think vlogmap works if I remember correctly.
You may want to search the archive of this group for dreamhost code.AQOn 1/16/06, grasshopperatyourfeet

2006-01-16 Thread Susan
I'm one of the few PC users out here, and I use Roxio. If you can
still find Roxio 7, it supports 3ivx, which allows you to make mp4's
in one fell swoop. (Currently Roxio 8 does not support mp4 output).
Personally, I can't stand Pinnacle. I don't have the latest version,
but the older version I had crashed constantly, and took forever to
encode. Read lots of online reviews.

I have always heard that you should only use a tape one time... but
then again, I don't have a tape camcorder (mine saves to memory
stick)... others might chime in on this one.

background. i generally multi-task and so rarely care how long the
download takes. i prefer not to view vids in the browser, i prefer a
 sizable player like fireant.

in general, i don't really care how big or how long a video is as long
as the content is worth it (there is a limit of course, I'm not looking
to download gigabyte files just yet). very few pieces of media can hold
my full attention for 40 minutes anymore (especially movies and TV).

i don't generally stop watching when it gets long, i usually just fast
 forward.

if i do stop, i generally stop watching a video within the first 30

(e.g., total downloads not limited). while this is not super fast, i
would probably feel different (i.e., more selective) if I had slower
 access.

i like streaming for the video conferences, but it does not seem to make
much sense to me for vlogs (from a viewer standpoint, it stops and
starts too much and it's usually hard to fast forward).

 hope that helps

Just curious about the answers-- someone recently said they wanted
longer than 10-minute vlogs, because they wanted to really sit down
and watch stuff, but I wonder about that. A 10 minute vlog is 30 MB,
easily. A 40 minute vlog would be almost 100 MB? Is that worth your
time, bandwidth, and download speed? Would it make more sense to

If I have no personal investment - they're not a friend or something I already know that I like - then I'll give it a few minutes if it seems interesting but if I don't find anything that speaks to me inside the first minute, I usually skip over it.--Me: http://michaelverdi.comRD: http://evilvlog.comLearn to videoblog: http://freevlog.orgLearn to videoblog in person: http://node101.org

It's a matter of taste though, and if you don't like the stuff we're putting in there from other people, you probably won't like the stuff we're creating originally either.
The beauty of video on the web, for me, is that you can do whatever the fuck you want. From your statements, can I assume that you watched the 1st video and were unimpressed by our content?AQ

[videoblogging] Screencasting in Windows Media File (long)

2006-01-16 Thread Stephanie Bryant
This is not specifically vlog-related, but I need some help and you
are all very knowledgeable. I am normally a Mac/iMovie user, so this
is all a steep learning curve. Unfortunately, my deadline is tomorrow
for a finished product, so I have to leap the curve ASAP.

OK, here are the specs of my assignment:

Make a training video using Windows to be put on a DVD.

Have screencam video in it (basically, video of my desktop as I
perform various tasks).

Here's what I did and what's going wrong:
I used Windows Media Encoder to capture the screen. No problems there,
though everything ran slowly.

I used a custom encoder profile:
Screen capture, no audio.
Encode to file, no limit.
Compression:
Video encoding mode:CBR
Audience: 1009 Kbps
Video codec:Windows Media Video 9
Video bit rate: 1000 Kbps
Video size: Same as video input
Frame rate: 29.97 fps
Key frame: 6 s
Image quality: 0
Buffer size:Default
Not 2-pass encoding (which WME kept complaining wasn't possible with
screencapture)
No cropping
No video processing options
No plugins
No security

What's going wrong is that I imported these files into Windows Movie
Maker and when I preview the clip from the Collection, it's fine. When
I preview the clip from the storyboard, it's nearly impossible to
view-- the text is fuzzy and bitmappy. A screen shot of the storyboard
is available here, but I can't get the collection to screenshot
properly-- it appears to not want to take an accurate screenshot
(probably playing video via plugin?):

View from the Storyboard:
http://www.scottrell.com/personal/images/FromStoryboard.png

So, the question is: Should I worry about this Collections preview
issue? Is it just previewing badly, but will show up fine in the final
rendering?

I might add: the generated .avi from these files (I tested it), so
far, has not impressed me-- they appear to be very jumpy. When I
import them into Roxio, they appear to smooth out, but I haven't
actually burned the DVD yet to see how well it plays.

Help? Suggestions? Tips and tricks? Please don't tell me to use
iMovie. I can't take the screencam except on the windows box, and the
screencam software saves as WMV.

If all else fails, I will bring the Mac laptop tomorrow and try to
convert everything to .mov and use iMovie, but tomorrow's my last day
here, and I needed these training videos to be done by then.

Thanks in advance,
--Stephanie

anywhere and I haven't been able to come up with a comfortable
graphic to add on top of the video to make this apparent.

I'm thinking of adding a message on the begging frame, not sure.

This is a great feature! But I just tried it and found 2 issues:

In Firefox, the link is blocked as a pop-up and nothing happens. After
a couple of tries I just happened to notice the Firefox blocker and
changed the preferences to allow if from RB. Something else that needs
to be pointed out.

The link then took me to a new tab, but the video continued playing.
So, that meant going back to the tab in which RB was playing, stopping
the video, going to the new tab which has the linked article or video,
then going back to RB. Once I did this a couple of times, of course,
I realized that if I stop the video, then click on the frame, I got to
the link. Something else to be documented.

But I like the feature very much. Now you've got me wondering what is
the begging frame?

It's great that you've been so open and helpful with what is going
into RB. Thanks.

Re: [videoblogging] Godaddy question

2006-01-16 Thread Richard Show

I use GoDaddy, but my buddies like Adam and Bill Streeter keep telling me how good Dream Host is and they are, of course, smarter, but I'm lazier and I'm also afraid of the hassle of changing - especially since I'd have to change the ftp stuff in blogger to point to dream host and then the world would explode, I'm sure. However, another good thing about dream host is that you can get wordpress with one click, which is supposed to be infinately better than blogger, but, of course, I'm way too chicken for that - surely the sky would fall if I tried to transfer all my stuff to another type of blogging software - so I will probably stick with my safe little godaddy and blogger snickums and love them and hug them and hope they are always nice.
One important thing, though, is that GoDaddy does not host my videos. Those are hosted on blip. GoDaddy just hosts my pages and, in fact, I use blogger and just set it so it points to GoDaddy, as I mentioned above, so, I don't see any problems with video downloads like Adam describes.
The GoDaddy support is generally pretty good and I think I recall that Bill said that he thought GoDaddy was a good place to register domains, though I'm not sure why that is necessarily.Of course, I could just go downstairs and tell you all this, since you are my daughter and you are in my house, but that would involve human contact, and I'm a Cyber Dad. Also, others on the list would want to hear my great wisdom, I'm sure.

I'm not so sure it will function on the iPod.
The idea here is that people who subscribe to The PAN are trusting

 them as separate chunks.
Plus 15 minutes is not that much for most commuters, who are a good
portion of iPod video watchers. If you're watching the PAN in the
morning on your way to work, you can stop it halfway through when
you get to the office, then when you take lunch or go home at
night, restart it right where you left off.

Why not let them each exist as separate videos that can be
downloaded quicker and easier? You may as well simply link to the
originals too in order to credit the creators.

 That's been done.

[videoblogging] help with audio into computer

2006-01-16 Thread Richard Show

I have a digital mixer (BOSS BR-864), and it has a usb port and it's done a really good job with music or voice I have recorded, transferred to my computer and used in vlogs.I have also tried to do voice over recording with Final Cut Pro by just sticking a cheap microphone in the mic input and it sounds like crap, naturally.
It's a pretty big hassle to have to record voice on my digital recorder, which sounds really good, then upload it to the computer, and then add it to the editing program separately, as opposed to doing it real time.
As you probably have guessed, my question is: can I use the digital mixer to record directly onto the computer to use with things like final cut voice over or something like garage band? This is probably a stupid question and the answer is probably of course you can or of course you can not you big geeb, but that has never stopped me before.
The mixer does have (from the manual):a) Line Out Jack: These are the output jacks for the analog audio signal. You can connect tape recorders, or other recording devices to record the output analog signal from the BR 864 (looks like regular RCA jacks - i think that's what they are called)
and b) Digital Out Connector: Optical connector for outputting digital audio signals. The same sound that is output from LINE OUT is also output from DIGITAL OUT. You can connect a DAT recorder or CD recorder to this connector and make digital recordings of the BR-864's output ... This is a very weird looking jack I've never seen before.
... oh yeah, I also noticed that my power book does not have a line in hole like my PC does, just a mic and headphone jack, so I don't know if that makes a difference... Any help would be much appreciated ... thanks! ... Richard
p.s. I have some nice microphones - old Sure SM58s, if that makes any difference - I use these with the mixer, but have never tried to find some sort of jack that would make it fit in the tiny little mic hole in the computer ... not knowing if that would make any difference ..

Re: [videoblogging] Long and File Size: Revisiting the question

2006-01-16 Thread Arnþór Snær
I don't care that much about the filesize, since my aggregator fetches
the media in the background.

Here is my take on the length issue.

I am a fast forwarder. I fast forward through stuff im not sure on. I
may fast forward through some vlogs, while others will play
uninterrupted.

Here's an example :
For example i may fast forward through some of kitykity videos while i
usually don't with the human dog videos. I pick these two because they
are two vlogs i enjoy, but are different by design and i approach
viewing them differently

(Not to offend Susan, i like her character in the videos, i sometimes
FF through the more family oriented videos.)

My point is that i don't skip, I fast forward and I like having that choice.

So i prefer the vloggers just listen to their audience and that little
vlog-voice in their heads when it comes to length of the videos.

Hope this makes sense to someone.

my full attention for 40 minutes anymore (especially movies and TV).

i don't generally stop watching when it gets long, i usually just fast
forward.

if i do stop, i generally stop watching a video within the first 30

the main reason for stopping a download: i found something else I want
sooner

my download speed is usually in the 512Kb-1Mb range with no other limits
(e.g., total downloads not limited). while this is not super fast, i
would probably feel different (i.e., more selective) if I had slower
   access.

i like streaming for the video conferences, but it does not seem to make
much sense to me for vlogs (from a viewer standpoint, it stops and
starts too much and it's usually hard to fast forward).

hope that helps

Stephanie Bryant wrote:

How much is too much? At what point will you (personally, yourself, as
a vlog watcher):
1) Stop downloading the file.
2) Stop watching the movie (how many minutes, assuming it's not too

Would it make more sense to
stream instead?

No doubt. I have the feeling that public access tv has failed because it

time to produce a weekly 30 minute show. I only have limited experience
with public access of course (a 5 month stay at CTN in Ann Arbor), but it
seemed that the 'public' wasn't represented very well. It was mostly
representatives from the local churches who videotaped sermons (a very
easy way to create a 60 minute show). That why videoblogging - in my
opinion - has an advantage over the tv. Shorter forms (ie. shorter than 30
minutes) work better, and thus more people can be involved.

before the Internet the only short form films one might
see on a regular basis was television commercials. And that's a real
waste of a perfectly good format.

I always tell people to start watching commercials. You can say a lot
about them, but they're really good for figuring out how much you can
leave *out* of a video and still have a perfectly coherent story.

And the image don't have to be placed over the video of course. It can be

The GoDaddy support is generally pretty good and I think I recall that Bill said that he thought GoDaddy was a good place to register domains, though I'm not sure why that is necessarily. No. I am a fan of small chunks... but lots of them from lots of
different places and the ability to easily switch between them and
manipulate them, etc. Viewing video on the web never seems to allow me
 to interact this way.

 -Josh

Ultimately... and we talked about this in the way back at the
beginning of the mRSS (aka. media RSS) initiative... I'd love to see
content strung together in RSS so it would play in an order... so it
didn't need to be compiled together into one video... so you could
have to minutes of video A... and then do a personal seguay with
another video clip to introduce the third clip... the probelem is in
preserving the integrity of that stream.

Lucas Gonze promoted his playlist fromat XSPF or whatever it's
called... and that works well for mp3's but there's still a huge
problem with two factors.

a) XSPF is not supported for aggregation... I know of no way to
attach it or enclose it with all the videos it references in RSS so
they can all be downloaded and the playlist reconstructed on the
client side.

b) The XSPF format is best with mp3 because there are just tooo many
audio formats... there's just no way to 1) stream video as
consistently as mp3 from different sources... 2) play back videos in
different formats consistently in any playback tool.

Essentually there needs to be a better open markup, a container, for
maintaing the integrity and the relationship of videos over
aggregation and that tools like fireant that support this container
and all the video formats it might contain.

Essentially apple's SMIL format is one such container... but it has
it has many of the same faults as XSPF.

BTW, correct me if I'm misrepresenting the XSPF playlist format, I'm
no expert on it.

if there is 15 minutes of stuff from a site every day, why would

That seems like an iPod issue. I don't have one, but I'm

That said, I do want to figure out QT chapters so they can
easily skip a segment if they wish. Although I'm not so sure it
 will function on the iPod.

That would be cool if this feature were supported on the iPod.

The idea here is that people who subscribe to The PAN are
trusting us to provide 15 minutes of *Really Good* stuff, so
they won't need them as separate chunks.

You should at least provide better text descriptions on the site and

Plus 15 minutes is not that much for most commuters, who are a
good portion of iPod video watchers. If you're watching the PAN
in the morning on your way to work, you can stop it halfway
through when you get to the office, then when you take lunch or

[videoblogging] Re: What to buy and use; Editing software / tools / tapes / magazines /

2006-01-16 Thread David Howell
I use both a PC and a Mac to do my editing. It all depends on what
system I sit down to at any given time.

On my PC, for editing, I use Adobe Premiere Pro. After I have done all
my editing, I save the movie as an uncompressed AVI then encode it to
an 320x240 H.264 MOV file using Quicktime Pro.

As for other editors, I've probably tried them all. Vegas is very,
very good. Adobe Premiere Elements is very good (only about $100).
Ulead MediaStudio and VisualStudio are good. Pinnacle is absolute
crap. Version 10 is worse than crap. Stay away from Pinnacle if you
want to keep your money and your sanity.

As a side note. Windows MovieMaker will have a new version when
Windows Vista is released. All the functions (transitions, special
effects, fonts, etc) that you are looking for can pretty much be found
in almost all NLE's these days.

Tapes. I use a tape only once and then pop in a new one when it's
full. I mostly do that for archival purposes.

Software Utilities. None. Premiere Pro and Quicktime Pro do everything
I need or want them to do.

Video magazines. I have a subscription to DV Magazine. Good toilet
reading material :)

Hope that helped.

Personally, I can't stand Pinnacle. I don't have the latest version,

  Well here it goes;

  The ingredients so far

  -Bought a digital videocam , Panasonic PV-GS150 3ccd minidv ,
  http://tinyurl.com/7v93n
(also spare battery, UV filter, mono-pod, tapes and a 3W light no

  -I'm building a website using WordPress http://vlogmatic.com
-Have content in my head and its around everywhere.
-I read the discussions about duration and publishing of video and
all the artistic issues with vlogs.
-Have a fast PC with windows XP sp2 and cable internet.

  Then I got stuck on a few technical questions;

(yup
  a catch all question)

as is your right Nick... but in a world of infinite and abundant
content... someone always does the picking... there are in fact
infinite forms of packaging and filtering content... and it's
unrealistic to think we'll always get it directly from our favorite
vloggers mouth... though I think that's a strong part of the puzzle.

Increasinly I think we'll rely on our friends and the communities we
participate to be our filters... and who knows how they'll
recontextualize and repackage content.

I think we'll use traditional top down editorial methods as are used
in news rooms and cable stations less and less getting more
information through our communities... Call it the global village or
whatever you like but there's a whole new economy based on how
communications are accessed and used. It's no longer completely in
the hands of the few... This is why publishers are suing google.. and
record labels refuse to put content on line... they don't want to
give up their lucrative marketing and distribution systems...
they're afraid to give up some control... but increasingly it'll be
US and our communities that make sense out of the world... no longer
executives in board rooms or advertisers and marketers figuring out
what we want based on how we spend our money... but US based on what
we talk about and share. And as I'm fond of saying once everyone
get's over that hurdle of giving up some controll we're all going to
benifit societally and economicly tremendously... on all levels...
not just down here in the trenches... the long tail so too speak...
but even the big media companies. Indeed this swing is already
happening in news media as newspapers realize that bloggers are not
the enemy but are in fact offer a HUGE economic benifit to their
business.

To come full circle I tend to really like just that The Pan is
packaging content in a really unique way... intermediating it
differently... well also that it's really unique content... but the
packaging is cool too.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: The PAN!

2006-01-16 Thread Michael Meiser

The pan is the next version of the original MTV... :)Only instead of stringing together music videos they got for free the pan is sringing together viral and independant media.Just like mtv this works because The Pan is giving these artist promotion it's the same model... just a different medium... a different market and a different generation... and I think it's a bautiful thing because it allows us to draw tremendous parrallels between MTV "revolution in Cable TV" and our revolution in internet based media. I really hope the pan succeds tremendously if only because I want to keep following the evolution and enjoying the simple parrels and differences between these two so called revolutions in distributing media.BTW, if you're interested in MTV's story you should wikipedia it... and while you're at it... perhaps more so you should wikipedia Ted Turner and the CNN story... he very much predated MTV and infact MTV more or less coppied his architecture... of course by the time MTV came around everyone was copying CNN's architecture... ...that architecture btw, was to take a single niche... in CNN's case news... and make it global... and make it 24x7 around the clock... it was a radical idea in it's time... because everyone knew the news was supposed to be a one hour thing at 5'oclock and 11 o'clock...  who in the world would watch news 24x7?   and yet the pervasiveness of CNN showed that you could recycle and regurgetate and recontextualize the news over and over for 24 hours and people would tune in because they new at any point the could tune in and they'd catch the top issues of the moment..and now Tivo has come along... and proposed something different... but Tivo is not the end all be all... the CNN's and MTV's of this generation are still out there lurking waiting to be discovered...  Current TV many thought might have a stab at this... but as many have pointed out they simply BLEW it big time the're just the same old media in the new clothing indeed architecturally they throw a bone to participation...  Personally... and I know my opinion means nothing to what time will teach us... but I think the MTV of tomorrow is the idea of the Personal Feed... the idea that you can create a channel that's completely YOURS... your media... and that you can interact with that personal channel in any and every way possible... that it's going to be pervasive in time and space... watchable not just at any time of the day, not just on demand... bit anywhere you want it... in front of the TV... while on the subway on your ipod or PSP... perhaps on your Nokia770 or cell phone... wherever you want that constantly updating channels of information you'll have it... and this may on one level sound absurd but then it's already true... we're ALL... all our videos are going to make up that channel... call it channel internet or some B.S  but it's not going to be channel CNN... or channel MTV or whatever   the end user is going to take ownership over that channel... and all media makers will be able to do is make media ... not craft the channel... not decide what to put in front of you... and what ads... they'll get to make their shows and decide how to make them "available" and we'll decide how we want to access them and when.   This is a huge shift in the world of media...  from a world of couch potatoes from a world where people will reach through the network and east from an infinite bufette of media.  And once again this may be my personal B.S. but the services and tools that are most in line with that vision will be the ones that succeed best.I could go on four hours about google video vs. iTunes video vs. yahoo's plans... all of them want to bring big media to the internet... but really it's the one who's most "open" that will win... period.. the one who allows the most media makers to enter the marketplace and the one accessible by the most consumers... and all matter of interaction inbetween.  Mark my words... either by the end of 2006 or the end of 2007 Apple's glorious closed platform will either become the coffin in which they soffocate or they'll have to dismantel it and open it up to everyone...  this does NOT mean they'll loose money... but it does mean they'll loose marketshare... just like they did in the Windows/mac showdow in the 80's.  The most open platform will win.My money though the start is humble is on googlebtw ebay.com... same damn story... they opened the markets to everyone... turned every buyer into a seller, and look at them now buying Skype for $4 billion... crazy bastards.Peace,-MikeOn Jan 16, 2006, at 4:00 PM, Adam Quirk wrote: On 1/16/06, Nick [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I think I am more of a fan of picking out my own content. Hello Stephanie,

Try this great freeware WINK:
http://www.debugmode.com/wink/

I suggest you read also the tutorial on that site.
You can achieve good results and rather quickly, it is as intuitive as
RoboDemo. (I don't know how intuitive Camtasia is.) Only be careful with
the number of the frames per file (if I remember right, each file should
not have more than 20 frames. But the (expensive) screencast software
has such file limitations, too ...

I'm glad you asked this question. I'm shopping around for a domain registrar too.

Does anyone have any experience with Yahoo? I see they're advertizing
$2.99/year for domain registrations. That's such a good price there
must be a catch.

Do any of you bother with Private Domain Registration? Or do you use a P.O. Box, or is it even worrying about.-- http://walkingonairvideo.blogspot.com/
