[videoblogging] REMINDER - LO-FI SAINT LOUIS RERUN MONTH! - NEED A FEW GOOD VLOGGERS!

2006-01-23 Thread Bill Streeter
I'm rerunning 28 videos that I've posted in the last year in February.
A different one each day. I would like to have each introduced by a
different vlogger. I've gotten about 14 volunteers so far, so I need a
few more. You can do it how ever you want as long as you keep it under
a minute and introduce the video that I assign to you. You can promote
your own vlog if you want or promote something else, it doesn't matter.

If you want to do one email me at bill[at]webfu[dot]com.

Thanks!

Bill Streeter

Re: [videoblogging] A Reason the Use Flash?

2006-01-23 Thread Deirdre Straughan

I'm not sure if there's a way to re-encode Flash; from what's been said in this group, I would assume not. At any rate, it's not easy or obvious to the masses how to do it.I use the Flash version of Sorenson Squeeze, which cost $99 and the quality is good. You can (as I do) play with your settings to choose the best compromise between file size and quality of encoding,
e.g. if you've got a moving subject against a moving background (probably the case with horse training), you'll need a higher video bitrate, but audio might not matter so much if it's not music so you can squeeze that down.
Feel free to look at my site for some examples, unfortunately, I stopped putting up encoding details a while ago, but some of the earlier ones might have that info still. Maybe I'll do some samples at different resolutions... one of these days in my abundant spare time! (Maybe the Sorenson Media site already has something like this.)
Let me know when you've got something up - I love horses! (And if you dig deep enough, you'll find video on my site of my daughter and her horse, when we still had him...)

(I should point out that the subject matter centers on horseback riding and I am dealing with professional trainers and riders who have granted me unusual access to their work. Nothing naughty or embarrassing.)
My QuickTime files can be downloaded and not only re-edited but can be re-released in unauthorized compilations. Some of my subjects would not be happy about that. I would like to reassure them that the videos can be viewed but not altered. And, if possible, that they cannot be re-distributed.
My questions:Should I switch to Flash? If I do go to Flash, is there an encoding app that does not cost several hundreds of dollars? I am new to vlogging and would like to ease into it as I see how it progresses.

2006-01-23 Thread Michael Verdi

If you put something on the internet, someone will find a way to use it if they want to. Even if you streamed it or used flash, someone could use a screen recording program to make a copy of it. The way you protect the work is to license it according to your wishes. Then if someone misuses it they are in voilation of the license. You can't physically stop people from using it though - just read any conversation on DRM anywhere on the internet.

There are ways to use Flash to make it less easy to download.
Most people won't go to the trouble of screen recording but if
you're a video editor looking for footage to remix and decide you want
a certain clip, its certainly not difficult to screen capture. Its
sort of like the analog hole except not, well, analog.

High bitrate please, like 1000 kbps

I set up a Spinxpress group to submit I can send you an invite or
you can just upload your submission somewhere and I can download it.
If it's under 10 meg you can email it to me.

I'll get back to you with an assignment tonight. My list is at home

 http://www.movieworks.com/movieworksdeluxe.html

Apple recommends it in their Creating Video Podcasts on Windows tutorial:
 http://www.apple.com/quicktime/tutorials/videopodcasts_win.html

I've just looked round their web site and it does look like a funny
little application. It struck me as being kind of half way between
Quicktime Pro and After Effects. It's not really a traditional
timeline-based system.

And I'm not sure I believe all their claims about how it works just as
well on a PC. There's a distinct lack of PC examples on the site, and
given how Quicktime on a PC seems to be missing things that are
assumed to be there on a Mac (DV input, AAC output, etc.) it seems
very likely that the PC version will have some differences.

I'd love to hear if anyone has used it. If they are being recommended
by Apple they will probably get a bunch of sales anyway.

The writer asked people to submit their favorite vlogs in the comments
of her blog a couple of weeks ago... this is how she found Carp

was more focused towards show-type vlogs.

Poor neglected carp... but at least they got a mention.

[videoblogging] Thanks Steve - Updated DivX Browser Plugin for Mac

2006-01-23 Thread JV
We may have to make Steve Garfield some sort of engineer. He helped us
sort out a bug in OS X 10.3. We think we fixed those and pushed up a
new version for mac this morning.

http://labs.divx.com/archives/72.html

We also just started puting video up on the Flavorpill Sundance blog -

www.flavorpill.net/sundance

We shot the Videoblogging panel yesterday, but haven't had time to
upload it. I will try and post an unedited version to the group late
tonight so anyone can watch/use it.

We will be trying to cut it down into a reasonable length post over
this week, but we are so busy here. And yes, we will be posting a
segment we shot inside Paris Hilton's party in HD.

Please let me know if any there you try it and it gives you problems.
It is a beta, so there may be some hitches, but we are trying to stomp
bugs as soon as we find them.

Thanks,

Jim Vinson

The company was target selling to schools-only formany yearsand that's why you haven't heard about it until now.I've evaluated it while back.It worked great on my PC. It is not a traditional timeline editor but ratheropens an edit window. It lacks a variety of effects, but integrates well with itself (5 programs). Re: [videoblogging] question about sony vegas software

2006-01-23 Thread WWWhatsup

That setting gives you this:

Audio: 44,100 Hz, 16 Bit, Stereo, QDesign compression.
 Video: 29.97 fps, 320x240, Sorenson 3

which is not particularly good, on video or audio, IMHO

you'd be best off, if you are looking for QT compatibilty, exporting
back out to avi/ntsc dv - then taking the result of that and encoding to
(possibly iPod compatible) mp4 in QT7 or some other program such as
Videora.

simply change the file extension from .php to .flv

Then you can play it in an FLV player like this one:
 http://www.martijndevisser.com/2005/10/flv_player_updated.html

or convert the file format to something else using a tool like this one:

I can't speak for Ulead, but I suspect, like Vegas, only quicktime 6 is
implemented
at present,. No doubt QT7 will be added in the future, but possibly in a costly
upgrade..

While there are definitely superior editing products to WMM,
you likely will still be best off re-exporting to DV and then converting that
to
in QT Pro or similar.

[videoblogging] Shameless self promotion again!!

2006-01-23 Thread Paul Knight
Dear all you lovely people in Vlogging land,

I have just started posting my wedding video originally taken in 1998,
a few years before Vlogging was even thought of. It was originally
shot on VHS-c and I have now converted it through copying it onto DVD
then ripping it using Handbrake, thanks to Randy Mann for the tip there
and I am posting all 15 chapters of the dvd on my site, dailymotion and
blip.tv.

I love all you guys and to date have made so many friends I would like
to share with you the awe and magnitude of the smallest little wedding
in the whole world, definitely the cheapest and the party afterwards is
such a thrill to behold as we all get mindlessly drunk.

I think our wedding was cheaper! (check out yesterday's video, in

these numbers can tell me a few things (number of reqests, avg view %).

What happens when I have it hosted on a third party, or perhaps
 multiple formats to download?

I guess my question to all you stat geeks is how do you do get, what
you consider, very accurate counts on viewership?

I've given up on accurate, like most of the web geeks... What I do is
the following. Instead of using a url like this:

  http://www.archive.org/download/foo/foo.mov

I use this for the link in the weblog post:

  http://foo.com/hit.cgi/http://www.archive.org/download/foo/foo.mov

And this in my feed for the enclosure url:

  http://foo.com/enclose.cgi/http://www.archive.org/download/foo/foo.mov

What the hit.cgi and enclose.cgi do is use a 302 Found header to
redirect the client to the actual file, which gets logged on my server.
This allows my stats programs to get some data on downloads/views.

It's not perfect, but stats never are... It is interesting on occasion.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Business Week Article

2006-01-23 Thread Joshua Kinberg
Heather Green has written about Videoblogs before. I like that she's
continued on the beat.

I gave the author of the article, Heather Green, a bunch of links to

They didn't make it into her article though.

I guess, since it's Business Week, the bias is toward vlogs w/major
viewership. Big viewership=more $potential. It's Business week, not
Let's Find Cool Grassroots Media With MInimal Cash Earning Potential
 Week.

Still, if you can pitch the author on there being a $angle on cool
little vlogs, she might be interested.

At least I tried to pitch her some more off the beaten path vlogs. I
guess the sure way to get press is to become very, very, popular. Then
ya get press and become more popular and it kind of snowballs. Of
course, becoming popular might mean sticking ot a particular format
and working it really hard, and that ain't for everybody.

The show ones are cool, don't get me wrong. Kitka, Tiki bar,
 they are
my faves, but I love seeing the odd ball stuff about someone's
 dog, or
geocashing, etc. and I know other people do too. I wish there

Re: [videoblogging] Greasemonkeying Reuters Video

2006-01-23 Thread WWWhatsup
Thanks

FLV player works well

I has some trouble with Total Video Converter still.. it costs money or
watermarks
for a kickorff, but also trying a couple of different settings - VCD gave me
video but
no audio, and then mp4 gave me audio but no video, and then 'uncompressed' avi
gave me both but a little out of sync.

That is, nevertheless, enough for me to work with.

Thanks again for your efforts.

joly

simply change the file extension from .php to .flv

Then you can play it in an FLV player like this one:

or convert the file format to something else using a tool like this one:

[videoblogging] Anyone have a Vlog on myspace.com?

2006-01-23 Thread Mike Whaley
Was wondering if anyone posts their vlog on myspace.com. If so, do you
know how to allow people to post comments about your posts if they are
not a member?
Thanks,

[videoblogging] Sundance Flash 8

2006-01-23 Thread robert a/k/a r
Hey all

Sundance is making available a good number of shorts. They're using
Flash 8 an the images look great.

I'm not reopening the Flash v QT debate, rather pointing out (a)
Sundance's technology decision, fwiw, (b) the availability of these
shorts online, and (c) the non-DRM'd nature of the offering.
