2006-05-08 Thread B Yen

I'm a Getty Images photographer, they want "editorial stories".  So, I can cover it.  Let Getty Images distribute/sell it.  The sell to all the major mags all over the world.  BBC, Stern magazine (Germany), National Geographic, Time, Newsweek, etc.  My stuff has been on CNN, Newsweek, ABCNews, NBC Nightly News, CBS Evening News:http://www.jumplive.com/about.htmlI even have the contacts with CBS in San Francisco, they called in a story idea to CBS Evening News w/Dan Rather (New York office)back in '97 (Comet Hale-Bopp, I got lead-photo for Comet Hale Bopp) were going to send a van to interview me on Mt. Wilson.  They cancelled at the last minute, because of that crazy mass suicide in San Diego (Comet Hale-Bopp related).  They owe me a kill-fee, I've been waiting a LONG time to use it.  Maybe now?Can you put me in touch with the "movers shakers" of Vlogging?  I kinda just  skim this list, since I'm busy with my own projects.  I need to start correspondence with some "Leaders in the Field, like Vloggercon founders/creators, Andrew Baron/Amanda Congdon, Michael Verdi, et al.  We need a Collaborative/Cooperative/Coordinated "plan of action" ("C cubed") to publicize Vlogging."People don't buy Good Products, they buy GOOD MARKETING"-- business saying[ the "Product" is Vlogging..with a future business-model in themaking, "GOOD MARKETING" is worthy/well-done media splashes..like with WIRED magazine, CNN "NEXT" (formerly CNN Science Technology Week), Cnet.com, etc  I know the chief photo editor for Newsweek National Geographic (back in '97, that is), have some contacts with the local TV affiliates in Los Angeles: KABC, KNBC, KCBS.  One of my friends is a free-lance videographer for KCOP 13, who has connections.  I will forward this post to him ]As I see it, here are some hi-profile names:Andrew Baron/Amanda Congdon (Rocketboom.com)[ I've mentioned this to many of my business-partners, potential VC funders..one of them is an ex-CEO of a 100 billion dollar fiber-optics company (w/computer networks as applications) another one is  a major Las Vegas casino owner who called me 1 year ago for a business-proposal.  We're working on getting my thing funded this very minute.  With Rocketboom's transition to a business-model ours doing the same thing, we are on the verge..Taking "Concept" (Proof of Concept) into "Reality" (Business Model Reality) ]Michael Verdian original pioneer, who did a tutorial on video-blogging?[ we've been in touch privately ]Any others?Anyone on this list, feel free to chime in tell me about yourself/company your vision of Vlogging.Tell me about this new Videoclix technology, is there anyone else doing it other than Eline Technologies?http://www.elinetech.com/videoclix_main.htmlWith Rocketboom's sponsorship ( my projects Auto Racing market, where sponsorshp is the DRIVING force behind auto-racing), this video-clix thing is a key technology. We're working on a big project which will happen in early June, just before Vloggercon.  Hopefully, we can report on a smashing success at Vloggercon.  It should have major funding (it's still a "test", much like Vlogging Apple's video capable iPod video-podcasting, TIVO's deal with Rocketboom..are still "Tests"), with a LOT of multimedia flying all over the place.  Including video-podcasting, Sony PSP, mobile-blogging.Anyone in Southern California (Los Angeles San Diego, possibly NoCal) available as video-bloggers video-podcasters who might be available for contract-work..say in Northern Baja?  Sample venue, Baja 1000 offroad race:http://baja1000.textamerica.comhttp://www.jumplive.com/baja1k05/index.htmlexcept we will be doing a LOT more.  We will have at least 2 (possibly 3) more livewebcast'ers down there.Using mobile blogs like I did with NAB:http://nab2006.textamerica.com video-podcasts ( audio-podcast of audio race-traffic)http://nab2006.textamerica.com/?_ctgry=23686[ Isilon booth pics videos, camera-cellphone pics digital SLR pics ]http://nab2006.textamerica.com/?r=4696879_ctgry=23686[ Isilon booth, my digital SLR pic made "Editorial Pick" on Textamerica.com , check out the commnets.  Click on "original image" for high-res 2M pixel image, http://imageserver4.textamerica.com/user.images.x/81/IMG_465681/Big/_0425/T520060425102544810.jpg ]On May 7, 2006, at 9:01 PM, Anne Walk wrote: sure will, B! we are the media! it'll be the most covered event of all time!On 5/7/06, B Yen [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Will Vloggercon be covered by any of the media?- "Standard Model" media: TV/PrintCNN, ABC, San Jose Mercury News- Webzines slashdot.org, cnet.com, etc- high profile video-blogs like Rocketboom.comOn May 7, 2006, at 3:02 PM, Ted Tagami wrote: I might miss this one. 2006-05-08 Thread David Meade

This is caused by feedburners new download tracking stats. It
rewrites your enclosures so that click throughs to the media files pass
through feedburner so they can keep count.

For whatever reason the way they've chosen to do it, is to name ALL enclosers like this:

feedname.ext?d=#

where feedname is your feedburner id, ext is the file extension, and #
is a unique number identifying the file this generic name should point
to.

I've posted to their forums letting them know that this isn't ideal:
 http://forums.feedburner.com/viewtopic.php?t=3988

The seem receptive to the feedback, but if you want feel free to add a yeah what he said to the above post.

Some folks from feedburner are going to be at the Chicago MTV even this month, I'll press the issue with them in person. :-)

2006-05-08 Thread Enric

I would think that some local media such as San Jose Mercury, San
Francisco Chronicle, local TV and/or radio stations may cover. And
it's quite likely that Rocketboom and others will do segments on it.
But, I don't know if any of these are set. I'll bring up this
question at the May 12th meeting.

 Thanks,

Hmm, I suppose I was looking for a bit more than a Yes, it can be
done/no, it can't be done answer; rather, someone who's done it, or
done something similar, and might have a ready-made solution!

I have no idea how WordPress logs the info about user agent, for example.

Oh well, looks like i'm out on the bleating edge and it will be
self-help and a crash course in PHP scripting for me.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Us vs. the UN

2006-05-08 Thread Deirdre Straughan

Looks as if the news is good (so far) on WIPO:Webcasting Gets a Reprieve
International treaty provisions that would prevent the retransmission of media over the Web have been dropped -- for now.
		By Wade Roush

			If
proposed rules preventing the digital retransmission of TV, radio, or
cable broadcasts are adopted as part of an international treaty on
broadcasting, it could have repercussions throughout the nascent world
of Web broadcasting. For instance, it might become illegal for
musicians to offer recordings of their performances on their own
websites, or for bloggers to post video and audio files -- even if the
content is in the public domain. But last week countries
opposed to these provisions -- which would have given broadcasters and
cable TV companies broad new rights to control information on the
Internet -- managed to strip them from the treaty, at least temporarily.During a five-day meeting in Geneva of the U.N. World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO)
Standing Committee on Copyright and Related Rights, an unlikely
coalition of delegates from developing nations and technology
organizations such as Intel and the U.S. Telecom Association voiced
strong objections to treaty provisions covering webcasting and
simulcasting over broadcast or cable networks and computer networks.
By the end of the meeting, on May 5, the committee, which had intended
to finish a draft treaty that could be agreed upon by the WIPO General
Assembly in 2007, decided to send the assembly only the less
controversial sections of the treaty. Debate over the Internet
provisions was deferred until this fall. The good news is that webcasting is out of the treaty, says Robin Gross, executive director of IP Justice,
a civil liberties organization based in San Francisco, which sent a
representative to the meeting. But it's a little too soon to
celebrate, he adds, since one article still in the main draft of the
treaty gives broadcasters the exclusive right to authorize
retransmission of their broadcasts by any means, including over
computer networks.More on http://www.technologyreview.com/read_article.aspx?id=16783ch=biztech--

[videoblogging] Small steps in March on Poverty

2006-05-08 Thread Heath

OK, I am not sure how much this has to do with vlogging per say but I
thought I would share this with you all. I don't know I may vlog
about it, but I would want to check with the principals invloved
first

anyway this article was in the local paper and it strikes a cord with
me because this is were my wife has worked now for over 7 years and I
am proud of her and of the work that she does. I know the people and
I know the organization and with everything else that is going on, I
felt we all could use a bit of good news for a change

Small steps in march on poverty

Poverty as a social problem often looks insurmountable. It is so
numbingly vast that we tend to think it can be approached only in the
most gargantuan ways, as in The War on Poverty. Success in such a
war is limited - there always seem to be new waves of poverty arising
with every generation.

A more pragmatic approach to the problem is to realize that poverty
is the lot of individuals, and when you can help an individual become
self-sufficient, you have won a battle that may last for generations.

Such is the approach that has been taken in Greater Cincinnati by
Cincinnati Works, a private, nonprofit organization that, in the
words of founder Dave Phillips, works to break the back of poverty,
one person at a time. The organization was founded 10 years ago next
month. It's an anniversary worth noting.

Working on an annual budget of $865,000 that comes from private
donors and the United Way, Cincinnati Works has helped more than
3,000 people find jobs and, more important, stability. The stability
is the program's mark of success.

Phillips founded the organization with his wife, Liane, after
retiring from Arthur Andersen. At first they thought their goal was
simply to get people jobs, but after five years they realized most of
their clients never seemed to advance much. We realized we were just
creating working poor, so we started asking, 'What's keeping them
down?'

The answer was many of the same stresses affecting the non-poor -
depression, worries about families and health, lack of education and
training - compounded by the lack of resources to do much about it.
Sixty percent of the unemployed poor are estimated to suffer from
chronic depression or anxiety.

So Cincinnati Works kept working with its clients after they found
jobs. The program now calls for a commitment from the workers to
stick with their initial placements for one year. After that, the
organization will help with training to enable them to advance in the
workplace. Meanwhile it also offers such support as counseling, legal
advice, a chaplain and referrals to social services.

The goal now is not just to find people jobs, but help them keep
those jobs and eventually rise higher in the work force. Over time
the program has found that achieving stability for these clients may
take 18 months after they first get a job; advancing to economic self-
sufficiency is likely to take five years.

It's a long path, but Cincinnati Works' statistics seem to indicate
it is a successful one. It cites an 84 percent job retention rate
after one year, compared with an industry average of 25 percent.

Cincinnati Works is a baby step on an enormously long trip. On
average it places just more than 600 people in jobs per year.
According to Phillips, it has a target population of working poor and
unemployed in this metropolitan area of more than 80,000. But the
success is being noticed. Houston and Washington, D.C., both are
starting pilot programs this year based on Cincinnati Works' methods.

We don't have all the answers, Phillips said. But it is possible
to systematically drive poverty down in this community.

Small steps - but small steps can eventually add up to significant
strides.

The most common reason in my experience is that the movie has been
edited but not flattened since it was made. If you do a save as

Thanks for your response, Kevin, but this didn't work for me. I
cleared my cache and history before downloading to be sure I was
downloading the new flattened mov.

I always go from uncompressed mov, then export the movie to ipod
(m4v), then save as self-contained movie, so I think the old file was
actually already flattened. I do it this way so that the file will
play on an ipod. My older movies played by progressive download in a
browser. My new ones do not. I was wondering if pehaps there was
some setting somewhere that I switched inadvertently.

Kevin here.

Actually eyespot.com is way beyond being a sharing service. We're a
remixing community site for sharing mainly original video, i.e. like
that from video bloggers. We include found footage and stuff acquired
from other sources, but most of our video is original, and posted by
the folks who shot it for their own editing purposes.

Some examples are on my eyespot blog:
http://eyespot.com/blogs/kevinbaird

Yes, you can edit together all those little 3GP and AVI files from
your cell phone and digital camera, right in the browser when logged
into your eyespot account. I shoot DV as well, and provide
downsampled shots for remixing purposes. Much of what I shoot may be
considered stock footage for you to use. We're operating in CC
Attrib/Sharealike mode, so video that's not marked Private is findable
 usable in your mixes.

If you and your friends are all at an event, say, SXSW or Vloggercon,
and you all post footage and tag it, then any or all of you can build
a bigger piece from the cumulative footage.

Please tag your footage thoroughly so others may find it.

The PT Cruiser footage is all 3GP shot on my cell phone. You can MMS
your footage straight into your account for mixing, or use the Upload
page to post from your TransFlash (MicroSD) card. Other footage of
mine is from a Mini DV handycam.

Let me know what types of footage you may have use for...

I dont have alot of time to spend coding, but I could probably whip up with a php function to return the user agent, IP, and OS (when/if such information is available) ... would that be enough for you to accomplish what you want to do?
You could then use/test those values to decide what version of the feed to give them.- DaveOn 5/8/06, Jen Simmons

Re: [videoblogging] Re: feed questions

2006-05-08 Thread WWWhatsup

Reading that.. one can use, say

link media=tv
 rel=banana
 type=application/rss+xml
 href="" href="http://example.com/feed">http://example.com/feed
 title=Example
/

and media can be

screen
Intended for non-paged computer screens.
tty
Intended for media using a fixed-pitch character grid, such as teletypes, terminals, or portable devices with limited display capabilities.
tv
Intended for television-type devices (low resolution, color, limited scrollability).
projection
Intended for projectors.
handheld
Intended for handheld devices (small screen, monochrome, bitmapped graphics, limited bandwidth).
print
Intended for paged, opaque material and for documents viewed on screen in print preview mode.
braille
Intended for braille tactile feedback devices.
aural
Intended for speech synthesizers.
all
Suitable for all devices.
and rel can, it seems, be anything one wants it to be.

Can one use multiple link statements to differentiate between, say, text and video feeds?

Which of the above would one use for text? screen?

Presumably one could use the title attribute to specify further details?

People can use the download location, if they don't have a site to

When I upgrade to a new version, if you want to use the upgrade, then

Re: [videoblogging] How can i host Vpip and which is a better host bluehost.com or dreamhost.com

2006-05-08 Thread Markus Sandy

i have both bluehost and dreamhost

dreamhost has been much faster and far more reliable than bluehost.

bluehost has been a nightmare. worst support ever. lots of email
problems. lots of downtime.

their email is blocked by a lot of services.

once i asked why i can't send email to anyone at aol and bluehost
support said that aol had blocked them for too much spam.

judging from the over 20 comments left on my vlog about their poor
support, apparently lot's of folks feel the same:

I know that some people and software are using rel=alternate everywhere. I think wordpress, typepad, and some other blogging software WRONGLY does this.I used rel=banana just to push the point :-) (That there's more than just rel=alternate out there... and you should use what's appropriate... and not wrongly put rel=alternate everywhere.)
Can one use multiple link statements to differentiate between, say, text and video feeds?
Yes.In fact, that's one of the really important use cases for the link element.
Which of the above would one use for text? screen?Yes, screen would be for your text feed.Although, if you don't put a media attribute, then it automatically defaults to screen. (So you don't have to add media=screen) So... most the feed link's out there are media=screen by default (even though they don't use the media attribute).
Presumably one could use the title attribute to specify further details?
The title is meant to be human readable. (And machines, like your web brower, should completely ignore it.)You can add machines readable to the media attribute, the type attribute, the rel or rev attribute, and the class attribute.
(Remember, the class attribute is NOT just for CSS styling,... it's for semantics too.)See ya

Heath, why don't create one or two vlog posts? You could make an
evergreen vlog page that they could refer to for a variety of
purposes. Get them to write up content. It doesn't have to be much.
Point the camera at some of the ring leaders and get them talking.

Do a little snip, snip, upload and post.

I don't live in your area but this is the kind of thing that if a
non-profit that I trusted and believed in asked I'd do it. It doesn't
take that much time.

Now it is *really important* to set up limits. Make it clear that you
are not the free video person for everything that they want recorded.

Hate to break it to ya but you are the appointed messenger. Unless
you can rope or teach other folks to do it.

In the name of Vicki Vale, I salute you. Turbines to power, engines to
speed baby.

That code is a patch on the classic XSPF Flash player at musicplayer.sourceforge.net, which normally only plays MP3, to also support .swf and .flv. I haven't tested that yet, and I'm a tad doubtful, but if it works it'll be a fine way to go for some videos.

[videoblogging] Re: Someone has a monkey

2006-05-08 Thread Gena

It is nicely done. I just sent to email dh or the person handling the
site after watching the bio-disel video.

Now there are some copyright issues and fair use questions but that is
between her, her lawyer and CBS, FOX the RIAA. Other than that I got
no beef, which works out fine cuz she is a vegetarian, I think.

All are welcomed. There is always room for one more.

[videoblogging] xspf

2006-05-08 Thread WWWhatsup

hmmm, looking at your file, pete, it seems the actual media links
come in the form:
http://tinkernet.org/enclosure.cgi/http://www.archive.org/download/Tjaw_1/20060505tjaw.mov

which just loads in your page, rather than the media. If wondered you edited out the cgi bit, maybe it would work?

but then I had a go: http://punkcast.com/punkcast.xspf

and the VLC just hangs, same as you..

[videoblogging] QuickTime Replacement and 3ivx MP4 decoding

2006-05-08 Thread Brad Hood

After learning about MPEG Streamclip editor, I wiped QuickTime off my
system and installed QuickTime replacement. That solved the problems
of upgrade to QT Pro nagware, MPEG2 decoding and fullscreen playback
of QT files-- except that my players wouldn't play my .MP4 extension
files anymore!

I found downloading and installing the 3ivx pack solved the mp4
playback problem for my other players of choice-- Windows Media
Player, WMP Classic, JetAudio. It was only a one MB file.

Oddly, MPEG streamclip was able to recognize my MP4 files with QT
replacement. I wonder why the other players did.

[videoblogging] Re: quick start quicktime sometimes

2006-05-08 Thread Joshua Paul

I'm not 100% certain, but I don't think m4v files will Fast-Start.

On the technical side, just flattening the video file won't cause
it to Fast-Start (i.e. Progressive Download). You'll need to check
for the Fast-Start option when exporting from your application;
there's a difference between flattened and fast-start.

I think you placed the code in the wrong place, you put it in the
footer, it has to be in the header, just before /head

Instructions;
3. From the Blogger Dashboard click on the Change Settings icon and
choose the Template tab.
4. Scroll down just before the closing /head tag and paste the code
there.

see these instructions + picture via this link;
