Re: Voxie or List Recorder - Was using iPhone for studies

2012-07-06 Thread Carol Pearson
Eric, which of your podcasts deal with all ways of saving files onto your
computer as listed in your email below! I would be interested in knowing which
methodss to use in which circumstances.

I use this recorder on occasions, but not all the time, as you do, I would like
to become more proficient. Any help you can give would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

I suspected from your comments that you were not familiar with the current

free reader meets your needs why bother with Digit-Eyes or the Looktell
Recognizer. If the free ibill app reads money for you why bother with a
$9.99 app like Looktell Money reader.

On the other hand sometimes using apps specifically designed to work with
Voice Over and the visually impaired population provide excellent quality for
 the few extra dollars.

It is interesting how some features in a app make it work better for one
person and make it more challenging for another. I found it confusing to use
the FTP method of Voxie to transfer recordings. were in List Recorder I some
times use Dropbox, sometimes use email, and sometimes iTunes file share.

It depends on if I'm transferring one recording, many recordings, or backing
up the entire contents of List Recorder.

Voxie served me well for a few months and is a great value.

Your entertaining signatures are back! I guess that means you have power

compatibility in List Recorder, but quite honestly Voxie is very Voice Over
friendly as well. It also has recording categories so you can organize them
into whatever you want. Like all apps, there are a few things about Voxie I
don't like, but the express recording and the recording quality and the
settings and built-in web server so you can download your recordings without
iTunes is a huge plus for me.

I'm not against giving List Recorder another go, but since Voxie Pro was
$2.99 for me and has met my needs I haven't been really much interested in
paying more for something which might do the same.

 Hello List,

I hope this email will not block me from this list. This will be the
 last
time I will post any free apps. I have given the name and the company
 that
produced this app correctly. If you are just darn lazy to look it up in
 the
app store, then there is nothing else to say. I thought I was doing a
 good
deed by giving those that are interested a heads up on the apps that have
been discussed here and that others may want to download that are free or
are little cost. The app that has been most helpful for me to review apps

 on
a daily basis is Store News, so just put this in the search field on
 the
app store on the phone and it will be listed for one to add to their apps

 to
review the free or low cost app on their own. I value this list and have
grown substantially, but I will respond to those who I can offer my
assistance personally to their emails because there is a tremendous
 amount
of traffic on this list to be caught up with this nonsense.

Thanks for listening and I hope one will take my advice and add the
 Store
News app to their phone and take the time to review it on their own.

 Eileen

They are very different. Unlocking means your phone is made to work

tweaks and add other types of apps. Jailbreaking and unlocking are not
 synonymous.

I have had one or two extra bugs while using voice over on my
jailbroken iPhone 4 but nothing has ever moved and the bugs are
 certainly easy to live with.
The two biggest I deal with occasionally are folders closing a
split second after I open them and I just have to re tap the screen
and occasionally when I press the sleep button my phone will take a
 screen shot instead of locking.
to fix this I just tap the home button twice then hit the sleep
button and it goes right to sleep.
these are the only issues I have ever had with voice over.
Everything has worked just fine for me but I have not unlocked my
 phone.
 Only jailbroken it.
If I am lucky I will have one of these bugs happen tonight when
 I finish recording.

RE: question

2012-07-06 Thread Sandy Finley
Stephanie, the phone seems to always add one extra page beyond ones on which
I have apps. For instance, when I started moving apps I don't use to page 3,
page 4 was created. When I put an app on page 4, page 5 popped up. I then
either deleted or moved the apps on page 4 back to 3; page 5 then
disappeared. You cannot delete the apps that your phone came with, such as
Compass or Calculator; you can only delete ones you have added. I think you
can have up to 11 or 12 home screens. HTH

Re: Voxie or List Recorder - Was using iPhone for studies

2012-07-06 Thread Eric Caron
Hi Carol,

YOu can find the series of podcasts I did demonstrating List Recorder
at the below link.

http://www.sixthmode.com/lr-podcasts-eric
I believe Podcast 6 covers how to email a recording as well as how to send it
to drop box. However each podcast has a description that says what it covers
so you should find what you need at this page.
Podcast 7 is devoted entirely to export / import. This is how you can back up
all or part of your List Recorder contents to your Mac and then how to bring it
back if needed.

List Recorder is a big app. A person could use it easily as just a nice
recorder but it is much more then that. And the great thing is that it
continues to be developed by a enthusiastic developer and a growing group of
visually impaired volunteer supporters.

I hope you and others find these podcasts helpful.

RE: Dish receivers 922, 722 and hopper/joey and streaming with I devices

2012-07-06 Thread Rick Alfaro
Paul,

You may have missed it then but I did post my findings regarding this
feature being missing with the Hopper. I emailed them regarding this and
never got any kind of response. I did speak to their tech support rep and
the most he could tell me was that after investigating he could verify that
the feature was not there but he couldn't say whether it was by design, or
simply overlooked. He did offer to see what he could do about replacing my
Hopper and Joeys with models supporting this feature but I declined. The
Prime Time Any Time feature in our case was too good to give up.

Best,

Rick

I used to have a 922 and a 612. I was very disappointed to see the watch on
tv feature disappear with the hopper.

Sure wish we could get them to put it back.

If I had known that the watch on tv feature was not available on the hopper,
I probably wouldn't have switched.

Hi.

I currently have the Hopper along with 2 Joeys. I also have a SlingBox
adapter plugged into one of the USB ports on the Hopper. You can get the
adapter for $30 from Dish.

My experience with streaming has been ok for the most part. If you get the
free Dish app for your iDevice, you can stream stuff on your DVR or watch
live TV. Unfortunately, the part of the app that actually displays the
video on your device has a bunch of unlabeled buttons so you really have to
poke around to figure some of them out.

The one big issue I have with this is that if you have a Hopper, the watch
on TV option is no longer available. This option allows you to find
something in the program guide and when you click on watch you can choose to
watch it on your tv and not stream so it's sort of like an accessible remote
control allowing you to have it change the channel on your DVR to watch real
time.

This feature is there if you own a 722k or 922. Not sure why they decided
to not make it available with the Hopper. I have spoken to them and also
emailed them with no real responses so not sure if it will ever be added
back again for the Hoppers.

The Hopper has 3 tuners but it has the Prime Time Any Time feature.

This feature when enabled, uses 1 tuner and automatically records all 4
major networks between 7pm and 11pm. It's a fantastic feature. The DVR
itself of course isn't accessible but you do have the ability to view the
program guide through the app where you can schedule recordings along with
the ability to stream previous recordings. Again, it's stream only which
isn't the case with the 722 and 922, or so owners of those boxes have told
me.

Hope this helps somewhat.

Feel free to contact me off list if you have any more questions or we can do
Skype as well if you want.

Best,

Hello list,

So, I'm a Dish subscriber and have the opportunity to upgrade to any of the
above receivers for free. I recall reading on here that some other dish
users had issues with the Hopper receivers and streaming to their
iPhones/iPads.

I currently have two dvrs for four tbs and my understanding is that with the
Hopper, you can have up to six tvs hooked up where as with the other 922 and
722 boxes, it's only two tv connections with only the 922 receiver having
slingbox capabilities.

Can anyone speak as to the accessibility with any of these receivers and
streaming to an iPad or iPhone or exicuting any of the dvr recording
features online and so on?

I don't have an Apple TV, but will most likely be getting one later in the
year.

I would be upgrading from a couple of 625 receivers one of which is mine. I
was thinking about buying a netgear usb adaptor to insert into the receiver
that I own to catch my wireless router, but I've read conflicting reports
online that this particular dvr

device is not Internet capable outside of being hooked up directly to a
landline which I do not have.

I would appreciate any feedback or observations on any of the above. If I do
decide to upgrade and sign on for two more years, I'd like to get the right
receiver.

Thanks,

Hi, first off, who is your cell carrier? Also, do you have any sort of
unlimited mobile calling plan and/or an a-list or favorite numbers list
where the calls to the numbers are unlimited? Second, in the dial rules
app, you just type the number rule you want to not go through the
extension. So, for example if I always want a call to my home to not go
through Google Voice, I enter my home phone in there.

Hi, the biggest reason for me to jailbreak is because I use my Google
Voice number as my main cell phone number, and jailbreaking allows me to
seamlessly make outbound calls which originate from my Google Voice
number. I don't have to use a specific app like nonjailbreakers have to.
For example, if I am browsing the web and see a number, I can double-tap
it like anyone else can and call it and it originates from my Google
Voice number. Another thing I can do is send text messages out which
also originate from my Google Voice number. So, using the native
messages app, or my favorite one Bite SMS, I can text just like
everyo0ne else and it's all through Google Voice number. This means that
I can hide my real cell phone number. I said one reason, but I thought
of another. Themes. I love that I can theme my phone. In fact, just to
throw people off, lately I've had the Windows XP theme on my iPhone. It
makes the home screen look like a windows xp desktop, and it plays the
xp logon sound when I unlock and the log off sound when I lock the
phone. On the screen instead of slide to unlock, it shows slide to log
in.

I have many more tweaks, but themes and Google Voice are my 2 main
reasons.

Forgive me if I explain the obvious.

There are 7 clues and some are quite obscure. For example a clue

Each combination of letters stay as they are and you need to put
them in order. So, for the above example you look for the
combination that spells what you think the answer is. In this
case there are 2 groups oes and zer. You tap your choice but
they have to be in proper order.

Then tap the guess button to see if you're right.
Either right above or right below the guess button is an x, this
clears the edit field if you know you've screwed up and want to
start that word over.

Let me know if this helps any.

I have bought some additional puzzels. I've found that the names

I have checked my settings as recent as yesterday during the severe weather
we were having in our area. Not one time, not once did it sound to alert me
of the severe thunderstorm watch nor the warnings. That is has been my
experience with the app. That isn't opinion. If yours has been different.
That's great, I'm glad for you. I'm glad I got the app when it was free as
well. I'm also glad I'm not putting my life on it. , that I'm still using a
good old-fashioned weather radio @ least when I am at my home or in the
studio... Otherwise I'll keep looking for an all inclusive weather app. One
that will alert me as watches warnings are sent. Not lightning strikes
near me. one that will give me a good detailed weather forecast. thus
far I've settled on Weather Alert USA.

Using the record feature on Tune In Radio Pro?

2012-07-06 Thread Chasity Jackson
Hi. I had a question concerning the record feature on Tune In Radio Pro. Any
time I have hit record, it does not start right at the spot that I have
chosen. Instead, it backs up about five minutes or so, and begins recording
at that spot. I am wondering why it does this? I have gone into the settings
to try and find something that might indicate why it does this, or to try
and find a setting that would enable me to change this, but have found
nothing. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

Not to my knowledge. You could write the Developer to request that more
results be shown in future releases. This too is one of the few gripes I
have about this app.
iCatcher is a solid podcasting app. Apple's stand alone podcast app while
fully accessible feels on the skimpy side as far as features though. The
Apple app is free and if I remember correctly, iCatcher is $1.99 or
something.

Subject: Re: DigitEyes or another bar code reader?

Hi,
I'd like to know if you can use Digit-Eyes with an external bar
code scanner. I recently bought the QuantumT MS3580 USB bar code
scanner for around $160 and am currently using it with my
BrailleNote Apex BT32 and a service called BC Scan, which can be
found at

www.bcscan.com

The scanner, BrailleNote Apex and the BC Scan service work great
for scanning bar codes, but you have to have a live Internet
connection going to use this service. That may not be practical
in a grocery store setting, for example, where I may not have
access to Wi-Fi.

So, I'd like to get a USB adaptor to hook this scanner up to my
iPhone and try it out with Digit-Eyes or other bar code scanning
apps and my iPhone 4 and maybe even try BC scan over 3G using
Safari. .

Just to clarify a bit, even though I mentioned the QuantumT, the
actual manufacturer of the MS3580 scanner may be either Honeywell
or Metrologic.

Any thoughts on this?

Thanks.

Tom

Re: Using the record feature on Tune In Radio Pro?

This is just a guess, but maybe it starts from the time you started listening
to the stream. Or if that is not the case, then it starts from the time that
the stream is buffered. So if you're not listening to live music because you
pause, maybe it starts from that point. I am not sure.

Re: Using GV Phone Extension - Was Jailbreaking

2012-07-06 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hi. Either Verizon or ATT will be fine. The only reason I ask is because I
know that sometimes sprint accounts are tied in a little closely with Google
voice numbers and so things may not work quite the same. Some Google voice
numbers are considered land lines while others are considered mobile phones. If
you look up your Google voice number on white pages.com you will know if it is
considered landline or mobile. If your Google voice number is considered a
mobile number, then you can call it or receive calls from it with unlimited
minutes using Verizon or ATT. However if it is a land line, then you will have
to add it to your favorites list in Verizon or a list in ATT. With GV phone
extension, I have it set to the callback feature. So when I make an outgoing
call it first connects to Google voice and then calls my phone back. So I get
an incoming call and as soon as I answer my phone call is put through. I have
another jailbreak tweak called auto answer. I said this to automatically answer
when my Google voice number calls. The end result is that when I double tap on
a phone number to call, Google voice calls me back from my Google voice number,
and the phone answers automatically. So it looks like a normal outgoing call. I
hope all this makes sense.

For example, if I am browsing the web and see a number, I can double-tap

On the other hand sometimes using apps specifically designed to work with
Voice Over and the visually impaired population provide excellent quality

It is interesting how some features in a app make it work better for one

It depends on if I'm transferring one recording, many recordings, or

Fedora Outlier is the brainchild of our President VaShaun Jones who is

Just wondering if anyone can shed some light on how these header more
controls actually work. If one appears as the last item in a list of
tracks on an album, does that mean there are more tracks available? If I
double tap on the header more button, VO indicates that it is selected,
but it doesn't appear to advance the track list. What am I missing here?

Hi Carol,

YOu can find the series of podcasts I did demonstrating
List Recorder at the below link.

http://www.sixthmode.com/lr-podcasts-eric
I believe Podcast 6 covers how to email a recording as
well as how to send it to drop box. However each podcast
has a description that says what it covers so you should
find what you need at this page.
Podcast 7 is devoted entirely to export / import. This is

how you can back up all or part of your List Recorder
contents to your Mac and then how to bring it back if
needed.

List Recorder is a big app. A person could use it easily
as just a nice recorder but it is much more then that.
And the great thing is that it continues to be developed

by a enthusiastic developer and a growing group of
visually impaired volunteer supporters.

I hope you and others find these podcasts helpful.

why bother with Digit-Eyes or the Looktell Recognizer.
If the free ibill app reads money for you why bother
with a $9.99 app like Looktell Money reader.

On the other hand sometimes using apps specifically
designed to work with Voice Over and the visually

 few extra dollars.

It is interesting how some features in a app make it
work better for one person and make it more
challenging for another. I found it confusing to use
the FTP method of Voxie to transfer recordings. were
in List Recorder I some times use Dropbox, sometimes
use email, and sometimes iTunes file share.

It depends on if I'm transferring one recording, many

Voxie served me well for a few months and is a great

there are a few things about Voxie I don't like, but
the express recording and the recording quality and

Re: ipad first gen not charging on computer?

2012-07-06 Thread Esther
Hi Hank,

Richard, Anna, Joseph, and others are correct. The standard USB2 specification
for computers means that most laptops will not supply enough power to charge an
iPad. This is also true of the older Mac computers -- certainly any model made
before 2007. On the newer Mac computers the USB ports are high power USB ports
that will detect when an iPad or iPhone that requires more power to charge are
connected, and provide enough power to charge the device, slowly. If your iPad
is shut down when it is connected it will slowly charge. You can read more
about this in the MacWorld article titled The iPad's charging challenge
explained by Dan Frakes, March 23, 2012:
http://www.macworld.com/article/1150356/ipadcharging.html
(On a Mac you can use Command-Shift-R to read this in Safari reader, with only
the text of the article shown.)

As to what you can do about this, apart from using your wall charger, which is
the quickest way to charge your iPad, there was an AppleVis post that referred
to a USB adapter called the RAVPower RP-UA01 that is supposed to let you
charge your iPad from your computer USB port (but I don't know how fast). I'll
give you links to this product at New Egg and at Amazon. The product is
currently featured for $7.99 at New Egg. It is $9.99 at Amazon, which may have
an easier return policy.

an iPad or iPhone that requires more power to charge are connected,
and provide enough power to charge the device, slowly. If your iPad
is shut down when it is connected it will slowly charge. You can read
more about this in the MacWorld article titled The iPad's charging
challenge explained by Dan Frakes, March 23, 2012:

(On a Mac you can use Command-Shift-R to read this in Safari reader,
with only the text of the article shown.)

As to what you can do about this, apart from using your wall charger,
which is the quickest way to charge your iPad, there was an AppleVis
post that referred to a USB adapter called the RAVPower RP-UA01 that
is supposed to let you charge your iPad from your computer USB port
(but I don't know how fast). I'll give you links to this product at
New Egg and at Amazon. The product is currently featured for $7.99
at New Egg. It is $9.99 at Amazon, which may have an easier return
policy.

Re: DigitEyes or another bar code reader?

2012-07-06 Thread Tom Lange

Hi,
Well, that's a thought. Isn't the hot spot expensive, though?

You could leave your scanner hooked up to your apex and use the hotspot on
the phone so your apex would have internet in the store.

Hi,
I'd like to know if you can use Digit-Eyes with an external bar code
scanner. I recently bought the QuantumT MS3580 USB bar code scanner for
around $160 and am currently using it with my BrailleNote Apex BT32 and a
service called BC Scan, which can be found at

www.bcscan.com

The scanner, BrailleNote Apex and the BC Scan service work great for
scanning bar codes, but you have to have a live Internet connection going
to use this service. That may not be practical in a grocery store
setting, for example, where I may not have access to Wi-Fi.

So, I'd like to get a USB adaptor to hook this scanner up to my iPhone and
try it out with Digit-Eyes or other bar code scanning apps and my iPhone 4
and maybe even try BC scan over 3G using Safari. .

Just to clarify a bit, even though I mentioned the QuantumT, the actual
manufacturer of the MS3580 scanner may be either Honeywell or Metrologic.

Any thoughts on this?

Thanks.

Tom
