Subject: a good blu tooth ear piece for the IPhone

Hi I am using an I Phone 4.
I am threw Verizon wireless.
Can you recommended for me a good ear piece that I can get that will be
good for use with my I Phone?
That will give me access to all of voice over and that will make it easy
to answer and end calls when using it?
Also one that will give me the best voice clarity during A call?
I am looking at the Discovery 925 Bluetooth Headset.
What do you all think of this headset?
Thank you all and I will look forward to reading your responses on this.

RE: where is iTunes folder?, to Sieghard

2012-11-04 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Pablo,

If you installed iTunes on a Windows 7 machine and accepted the default
settings, the iTunes folder is in the Music folder. The Music folder, of
course, is in your user folder just as Documents and Pictures would be. If
you open the iTunes folder you will find the subfolder "iTunes Media" and
this is where all the media subfolders are, e.g. audio books, music, mobile
applications etc.

If your iTunes folder is not in Music you might want to open iTunes and go
to "Edit", "Preferences" and then go to the "Advanced" section. Here the
first thing you see is the location of your iTunes Media folder and this is
where, if you want, you can change said location.

I am not an expert when it comes to migrating you riTunes library from an XP
system to a new Windows 7 computer. However, I believe after you install
iTunes, all you have to do is copy the old iTunes Media folder into the
iTunes folder on the new computer, tell Windows to replace it if it asks. I
would do this with iTunes closed and after you copy it, open iTunes and see
if your music and all the other stuff shows up. If not just go to "File" and
"Add Folder to Library". Browse to the iTunes Media folder and then choose
"Select", this should add everything it finds in that folder to the various
libraries.

If I am out to lunch on any of this I hope somebody else will correct me and
explain the proper way to do this.

Regards,
Sieghard

Re: Using older and current iPhones on a cruise

2012-11-04 Thread Rollin Hippler
I recently returned from a cruise and had no problem using my iPhone or
i Pad in airplane mode. As others have indicated you have a few
options, via Settings, you can turn cellular data, wifi and Bluetooth
on/off as you desire. When in a U.S. port you may (but are not
guaranteed) to be able to access your carrier.

One thing to always keep in mind, there are no cell towers at sea, so if
you really want access to the internet, your only option is to use
services (cellular and/or slow wifi) provided by the ship which can be
costly. The cruise lines usually offer wifi packages that save you
some, but IMHO they are still costly.

Before I left I loaded books I wanted to read and music I might want to
listen to onto my devices. While at sea I had time to relax and catch
up on my reading, and learn how to get around some of Voiceovers quirks.

Then I go out of the country to the Bahamas. Since we won't get to

ship fees. I suppose what I'm asking is if the area from Texas to
Florida is covered in the AT&T network? I don't imagine myself doing a
lot of streaming, but just looking for another option besides the
ship's costly network. Finally, my soon to be wife will be adopting my
old iPhone 4. Since I have moved my AT&T service from the 4 to the 5,
the iPhone 4 isn't connected to a network. However, it still has the
voice memos app and the camera apps for capturing those special
moments. Might it be possible for us to use the old iPhone in order to
take pictures and make some recordings of our time on the cruise? The
only online connectivity I could imagine would be to backup the photos

Texas anyway. Any thoughts on any of this would be most appreciated.

Battery life with iPad 3/4 gen with screen curtain on?

2012-11-04 Thread Garry Turkington
Hi,

One of the big changes in the iPad 3rd gen -- continued with the 4th
gen -- was the much larger battery required to support the retina
display. I was wondering if this translates into much more battery
life for VO users with the screen curtain on? I've never been clear
on just what screen curtain does -- if it just turns off the display
or something more meaningful -- but either way would be curious if
this has translated into more battery life for the VO user over say
the iPad 2?

What about amazon they usually ships to europe? I would also be interested in

Re: a good blu tooth ear piece for the IPhone

2012-11-04 Thread Don Breda
The discovery 925 is not a good choice because it doesn't support A2DP
which is what you need to hear voiceover through it.

I used the blueant q2 with my iPhone 4 and you can get them pretty cheap
now.

One word of causion though is that they are not truly siri compatible so
if you plant to get a 4S or and iPhone 5 in the near future then I would
get a differnt earpiece.

IF you plan to hang on to the iPhone 4 for a long time then the blueant
q2 is a good choice.

RE: Bluetooth earpiece limitations - was a good Bluetooth ear piece for the IPhone

2012-11-04 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Keep in mind that even the best Bluetooth earpiece or headset has what I
consider to be one major limitation: a small delay which is not really
noticeable when you use it to make a phone call or listen to you're your GPS
has to say, but if you try and write something like a text message or email
I at least find this delay to be extremely annoying and it slows down your
typing speed on the regular virtual keyboard. The iPhone 4S and iPhone 5
both support Bluetooth 4.0, but I don't think I have seen anything other
than Bluetooth 2.1 being used for the headsets I tried including the
high-end Jawbone ones. I have a stereo Bluetooth headset which I used
sometimes at home when I want to listen to a book while I vacuum or work in
my woodworking shop and I don't want a cable and at the same time don't need
to really "use" the phone. For anything else the earpods are my choice.

RE: Battery life with iPad 3/4 gen with screen curtain on?

2012-11-04 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Gary,

My understanding is that the fact that the new iPad and fourth Generation
iPad have LTE is the reason why a larger battery was required since using
LTE is apparently a real battery hog. It would, of course be interesting to
know if the WiFi only models have actually the same large battery as the LTE
versions since if this is so theoretically this should result in better
battery life for a WiFi only model. Of course having WiFi on also does use
up a fair amount of battery life.

As far as the screen curtain is concerned there are a few people who claim
that it does improve battery life to turn it on. However, turning on the
screen curtain does not in fact turn off the display, it just blacks it out
so this would indicate it does nothing for battery life since what does make
a difference is how high you have set the screen brightness and screen
brightness is apparently not changed by turning on the screen curtain. If
you turn screen brightness to 0% this will in fact save you battery and make
sure you have Auto Brightness turned off. A sighted person can still read
the screen with brightness at 0%, but it's a lot harder.

Subject: Battery life with iPad 3/4 gen with screen curtain on?

Hi,

One of the big changes in the iPad 3rd gen -- continued with the 4th
gen -- was the much larger battery required to support the retina
display. I was wondering if this translates into much more battery
life for VO users with the screen curtain on? I've never been clear
on just what screen curtain does -- if it just turns off the display
or something more meaningful -- but either way would be curious if
this has translated into more battery life for the VO user over say
the iPad 2?

At this point Casey, I believe most of the "higher end" Bluetooth" earphones
are quite excellent. And the earphone itself has nothing to do with whether
or not VoiceOver and other auditory output is delivered well, That would be
a function of the iPhone itself (or whatever device sending those signals)
might be. What I mean is that the sound delivered to the earphone can only
be as good as the sound as it is generated on the originating device.

Myself, I've become fond of the Motorola Bluetooth Earphones -- there are
several models and they tend to be extremely compact and don't stick in your
ear(s) like a sore thumb. The microphone boom is really cool, too. It
isn't really a boom so much as a sort of flap that folds off the earphone
itself to lie flat against your cheek.

RE: Battery life with iPad 3/4 gen with screen curtain on?

2012-11-04 Thread Daniel Miller
Sieghard,

Yes, the Wifi-only models have the same capacity battery as the LTE
versions. However, there is a slight difference in battery life between the
2, since Wifi doesn't require as much power as LTE. Keep in mind, though,
that battery life can be tremendously impacted by what you're doing with the
device at a given time.

Subject: RE: Battery life with iPad 3/4 gen with screen curtain on?

2012-11-04 Thread Neil Barnfather - TalkNav
one thing you can do is disable auto brightness, turn it down to 0% and enable
screen curtain, this gives the best result.

On my MacBook Air running like this, the battery life is rated at 7 hours,
however, I get 13+ out of it by doing this.

Hi Wayne,

Yes, absolutely you can put your iPhone into airplane mode and use it
like an iPod or an iPod touch. Just because you're not using the
internet or cellular features of the phone doesn't mean that any other
functionality (i.e. iBooks, taking pictures, and playing saved
recordings) won't work: it absolutely will. This applies to your
wife's iPhone 4 too. You don't even need to have a SIM card in there
(although every time you reset it to factory defaults, you'll need to
activate it with a compatible SIM card, after which you can take it
out). When you're in airplane mode, all the radios are turned off but
you can enable WIFI and Bluetooth at any time.

Secondly, I have no idea about AT&T's coverage or what they consider
roaming. But yes, absolutely you can choose whether to use WIFI,
cellular data, or neither. In fact, the iPhone won't even try to
connect to a WIFI network unless you explicitly give your permission,
either by selecting a network from a popup that appears (if "ask to
join networks" is set to ON under settings/WIFI) or by going into
settings/wifi and selecting a network manually. Once you establish a
connection to a WIFI network you can head into settings/WIFI and turn
off the wireless radio at any time. On the same page you can navigate
to the name of the cruise ship's network, flick right once and
double-tap on the "more info" option, and choose "forget this network"
to make the phone stop connecting to the network.

Hope that helps,

Grant

RE: iPad Mini has arrived - first impressions

2012-11-04 Thread Rick Alfaro
Eric,

My intended uses for the Mini are the following.

1. Reading and replying to email, something that I find somewhat tedious on
my 4s. On the Mini just as the regular ipad, you have containers so when
using it for mail, it is very similar to what you would see in Outlook, or
Outlook Express in that you have a list of messages on one part of the
screen with the message content on another part so it's a split interface.
I find this interface much more pleasant to use. This means I can now use
the Mini anywhere in the house for mail without having to spend hours a day
in front of my computer.

2. The Mini has very pleasant sounding speakers so it's great for listening
to podcasts. For me, it's a nicer experience than on the phone.
The speakers aren't' terribly loud, but certainly loud enough.

For me the Mini is really a consumption device for podcasts, books, both
audio and non-audio. This would also hold true for the iPod but with the
added benefit of a larger screen and more reading area. Surfing on the Mini
is really nice. I suggest you check one out before purchasing an iPod to
see if it suits your usage patterns. Personally, I don't like wearing
headphones which is another reason why I like the Mini with its built-in
speakers.

Best,

Rick

Subject: RE: iPad Mini has arrived - first impressions

Rick, I had been considering the Mini as a means of cancelling telephone
service and just using Google Voice or Skype for the very occasional calls I
make. I had ordered the WIFI and cellular device. I wish the Touch came in a
cellular version because it just seems the added screen size of even the
Mini is wasted for those of us with no sight.

In the meantime, I changed my Verizon plan, which now gives me unlimited
talk time. While I do make few calls, they do tend to be lengthy. How did
someone who doesn't like talking on the phone end up with friends who use it
so much?

So, I decided I would cancel my Mini order. It was interesting that I had
placed my order within the first 2 hours of Apple taking orders, and I was
told the WIFI/cellular would ship mid November, when I looked at the ship
date at cancellation it was November 23.

All of that might be of no interest, but what I will be curious to see from
you guys who got the Mini, the totally blind users, what advantages are you
seeing to having it and an IPhone? I have not discounted getting one, but I
did think I would wait until I at least got to hold one before ordering.

Thanks for comments on how you see yourself using the Mini along with your
phone and maybe why a WIFI Mini has advantages over a WIFI Touch.

The best!

Eric

reading books on my iphone 4 s

2012-11-04 Thread Candy

Hello everyone,
I am so new to the iphone, and I ask questions as I go along. I normally read
my books on my NLs player. I get my books from bard and bookshare. Is their
any way to transfer any of these books to my phone for when I go out of town?
If so, I would need a complete explanation of how to do it. You may contact me

Well, the bard books and the recporder are menat to stay there, as their
laws explain. So as far as that you willhave to use the nls player or
other players if you have them. Nowq on the iphone you can put audible
books if you are interested in them, you buy them from audible.com, and
there is an audible app that you can get free to play them on. I use
this and the nls player all of the time. There are other players I
haven't trie, so I'll leave that part of the discussion tosomeone else
more knowledgable about them.

RE: Bluetooth earpiece limitations - was a good Bluetooth ear piece for the IPhone

2012-11-04 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Tamara,

I actually use some pretty obscure ones I got from a sales rep I deal with.
He represents some other brands of outdoor gear I sell at my store and he
has picked up this line of accessories from a company called Outdoor
Technology. They make a stereo Bluetooth headset, a set of stereo Bluetooth
earbuds which are connected with a string so you can hang them around your
neck and a speaker called the "Turtle" which is like the Jambox. On my
iPhone the headset I have shows up as "OT DJ Slims", OT stands for Outdoor
Technology and I guess the model is called the DJ Slims.

I do like them, sound quality is decent for books/music, not great but OK
for phone calls and while I have not tested this a lot apparently they don't
do much in terms of noise cancellation when there is wind etc.

The website is www.OutdoorTechnology.com and if you google "OT DJ Slims" you
do get a bunch of hits with reviews including aa 4 minute something YouTube
video review. They sell retail for $69.95 and for that price they are
definitely not bad, even better in my case since the rep sold me his show
sample for half that. They do use Bluetooth 2.1 and Voiceover works fine as
they do support A2DP. Apparently Outdoor Technology is working on a
Bluetooth 3.0 version, but I am not sure when this will come out and in what
way it will be better.

I do like the fact that they do have skip forward and back buttons in
addition to the volume up/down and power button. The button configuration
has the big round on/off button in the middle, above are the skip forward
and back buttons and below are the volume up/down buttons.

They are also quite rugged with a traditional headband design and relatively
large, square foam earpieces.
They are not super light, but as I said, they do seem very stirdy and I find
them comfortable to wear.

Regards,
Sieghard

RE: reading books on my iphone 4 s

2012-11-04 Thread Richard Turner
For Bookshare, there is the Read2Go app, $19.99.
You can down load books directly from Bookshare from within the app, so no
transfers necessary.
The app comes with two acapella voices, Heather and Ryan, or you can turn
off their audio and use VoiceOver.
It is a great way to have very easy access to Bookshare books.

As for NLS as someone else explained, they cannot be played on the iPhone as
yet. They are supposed to be coming out with an app. The last I heard was
next Summer.

Re: Using older and current iPhones on a cruise

2012-11-04 Thread Christopher Chaltain
Sorry if I'm missing your question, but turning on airplane mode turns
off wifi and cellular, so you don't need to turn them off if you turn on
airplane mode. Airplane mode basically turns off all of your phone's
radios, so it'll also turn off bluetooth and your GPS. I was traveling
internationally recently, and I turned on airplane mode and then turned
back on my wifi and location services. I still wanted to use my iPhone,
but I didn't want to pay any international roaming charges.

RE: Using older and current iPhones on a cruise

2012-11-04 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Reggie,

Turning on airplane mode automatically turns off Bluetooth, WiFi and
cellular. In airplane mode your iPhone is basically an iPod Touch, and you
can do anything you want that doesn't require a data or WiFi connection. You
can consume any media that is stored on your phone, music, audio books,
eBooks, movies etc. You can play games, record voice memos, type text notes
and use any app, just as long as the app doesn't depend on having a data
connection to work.

Sieghard

You can download and read Book Share books on your iPhone by using the
Read 2 Go app. $19.99
Heres a link:

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/read2go/id425585903?mt=8

Also, you can buy, download, and read books through the iBooks app.
The app is a free download.
Heres a link:
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/ibooks/id364709193?mt=8

Both of these apps are 100% accessible.

NLS does not have a way to read their books in mobile devices at this
time.

Hi Keith,

My Way Classic is probably the one to look at. You can drop waypoints anywhere
and then make them into a route. I haven't used it a ton, but I did use it a
bit on the campground on Maui where I was last March and while I too find my
guide dog is more helpful than any app, it did let me set waypoints at key
turns and that was helpful. The app is from the Swiss Federation for the Blind
or something like that and I believe it's $20, so not exactly cheap, but then
again the $2,000 I spend on my Trekker Maestro 5 years ago tells me that $20 is
cheap. The developer who does Money Reader and Recognizer is also working on a
similar app called Breadcrums, but it hasn't been released yet and I am not
sure when it will be released.

Hi,

Wondering if Ariadne, Navigon, or another GPS app outperforms others for ease
of use and effectiveness with waypoints?

I'll be staying at a vacation property in a few months that is probably 1
kilometer square. As it's private, I doubt the usuall mapping will be useful,
but I could be wrong. Instead, I'm thinking I'll need to set up key waypoints
once I'm there to aid navigation from dining facility to cabin to pool, etc.
Fortunately, the mostly walking-only paths are wide and flat. I'll rely on my
guide dog to get me around intermittent obstacles.

Thanks in advance for any insights.

Hi Scott,

Are their any benefits that you've discovered by upgrading? While I can
change the rotor in order to delete messages, this is a negative in terms of
upgrading. However, if there are specific feature enhancements, then I will
consider and likely update the IOS. Thanks.

Of course I understand that mileage may vary. I am not trying to contradict

Re: Battery life with iPad 3/4 gen with screen curtain on?

2012-11-04 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi,

I'd like to point out, on the macbook air, and any Macbook for that matter, if
screen brightness is turned down to 0%, there is no need to then use the screen
curtain. Unlike IOS devices, turning screen brightness to 0 on a Macbook turns
off the display.

RE: GPS Waypoint performance - Does one outperform others?

2012-11-04 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Keith,

Just talked to somebody else about this and there is also MyWay Lite (MyWay
spelled as one word and "Lite" spelled like this). This is the free version
of MyWay Classic, but I think it's pretty functional because the only thing
I noticed that the paid version does is something about uploading Open
Source Map files or whatever they are called. My experience with the app is
pretty limited, but I have used it successfully to mark points when I was
off the map so to speak on a campground.

Hi Keith,

My Way Classic is probably the one to look at. You can drop waypoints
anywhere and then make them into a route. I haven't used it a ton, but I did
use it a bit on the campground on Maui where I was last March and while I
too find my guide dog is more helpful than any app, it did let me set
waypoints at key turns and that was helpful. The app is from the Swiss
Federation for the Blind or something like that and I believe it's $20, so
not exactly cheap, but then again the $2,000 I spend on my Trekker Maestro 5
years ago tells me that $20 is cheap. The developer who does Money Reader
and Recognizer is also working on a similar app called Breadcrums, but it
hasn't been released yet and I am not sure when it will be released.

Hi,

Wondering if Ariadne, Navigon, or another GPS app outperforms others for
ease of use and effectiveness with waypoints?

I'll be staying at a vacation property in a few months that is probably 1
kilometer square. As it's private, I doubt the usuall mapping will be
useful, but I could be wrong. Instead, I'm thinking I'll need to set up key
waypoints once I'm there to aid navigation from dining facility to cabin to
pool, etc. Fortunately, the mostly walking-only paths are wide and flat.
I'll rely on my guide dog to get me around intermittent obstacles.

Thanks in advance for any insights.

RE: Battery life with iPad 3/4 gen with screen curtain on?

2012-11-04 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Ricardo,

Turning screen brightness to 0% does not in fact "turn off" the display, at
least it doesn't on the iPhone. I can say this for sure because I usually
have my screen brightness turned to 0%, but I have often asked one of my
employees to look at something on the iPhone and then they usually tell me
they can hardly see anything and then I remember to turn up the brightness.
However, a sighted person can read the iPhone screen in good light and by
looking directly at it when screen brightness is at 0%. The LCD display
still functions just the same it's only the LED backlighting that the screen
brightness adjusts and it's that which gives contrast to the display and
makes it easy to read.

Sieghard

Bluetooth Keystrokes

2012-11-04 Thread Joe
Hello,

I have some questions about the Apple Bluetooth keyboard.

1. What is the equivalent keystroke of double tapping and holding? I'm
thinking of the gesture to, for example, remove an app from the App
Switcher.

2. I found a tutorial that says Command + Tab should switch me between apps.
It's not working on my iPhone, so am I correct that this method of switching
apps is only good for the iPad or perhaps just OSX?

3. Is there a way to remap the keys on the Bluetooth keyboard with iOS, or
is this only a function on OSX?

Thanks in advance.

Re: program for tagging on mac

2012-11-04 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hi,

Also, don't forget that you can tag tracks within iTunes. You can select
multiple tracks and tag them as a group too, filling in the album, artist, and
number of tracks. And if you set iTunes to keep the iTunes library organized,
it will rename the tracks based on your tags and organize them by artist and
album.

Best,
Anna

one thing you can do is disable auto brightness, turn it down to 0% and
enable screen curtain, this gives the best result.

On my MacBook Air running like this, the battery life is rated at 7 hours,
however, I get 13+ out of it by doing this.

I didn't say it did. I said turning brightness to 0% turns off the display on
Macbbooks unlike devices that run IOS.

Thanks in advance for any insights.

apple tv question

There's an audio port on the apple tv. I'm curious if the apple tv would
work with no hdmi cable and just the audio cable. We're debating running
the apple tv into our sound system and doing away with the tv but we're
curious to know if that would work.

If anyone knows this the info would be appreciated.

Hi there,

The lock switch is just above the number four key. You slide it to the right to
lock it and to the left to unlock. It is kind of stiff, so you may have to use

Re: Deleting audible books

2012-11-04 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
If you are using the audible app, you go to info and then remove from device
and then delete. However as they are in your audiobooks library within the
music app it does seem odd but there doesn't seem to be a way to delete. If you
double tap andhold and then swipe to the right like you used to for the delete
function if you then moved to the left next to the buttons at the bottom,
there will be one called menus or something like that, but it doesn't seem to
do anything. double tapping on the actual book just open it or play it
depending on whether you're in a part or the whole book. It is odd that there
is no actions menu as there is with music and with lots of other iOS six
functions. I think it might be that you have to do what you used to do in music
before the actions menu when it came Up if you double-tapped that, and held,
swiped right, and then swipedleft again quickly. I'm sure somebody can explain
that better than I have, as they did to me a few months ago. I would certainly
be very interested in information anyone can give regarding this. Is it worth
reporting this to Apple accessibility? Is it just something that has been
missed off? It is quite random… And seems daft.

Re: Gift Cards

2012-11-04 Thread Chris
Whenever you purchase an app, it will always, always be credited from
your gift card first. Of course if you do not have any money in your
account then it will be taken from your nominated card. Also if the app
is more than what you have in your account then the remaining balance is
taken as well as the difference taken from your nominated card.

Vo-shift-m, that is control-option-shift-m.

2. I found a tutorial that says Command + Tab should switch me between apps.
It's not working on my iPhone, so am I correct that this method of switching
apps is only good for the iPad or perhaps just OSX?
Not tried this myself yet.

3. Is there a way to remap the keys on the Bluetooth keyboard with iOS, or

There is no way to remap keys under iOS.

Re: Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard Cover for iPad 2 and New iPad

2012-11-04 Thread Elizabeth Campbell
Hi Joe,

I use the Logitech ultra thin keyboard and love it. I can't give you a
comparison to the Apple bt keyboard,as I've never used it, but I find the
spacing is quite good and its not hard to type on the keyboard. I think it
has a stable feel to it.

I also like the fact that when you don't want to use the keyboard, you
simply turn the iPad with the screen facing down, and it will automatically
attach to the keyboard, using magnets that are built in to the iPad. It
then becomes a very compact unit that is easy to carry around with you.

Hope this helps.

renaming device?

How do you rename your device so it shows that in the source list? Right
now my iPad Mini just says iPad, but I would like to put my name there

RE: renaming device?

2012-11-04 Thread Joseph Lee
Hi,

Two ways:

1. From iTunes, highlight your device, open context menu and select
rename. Rename your device from the edit field.

2. Go to Settings/General/About. Double tap name button, then type the
new name for your iPad in the edit box.

Cheers,

Joseph

Lay the phone down on a hard flat surface. Flick to or touch the file you
want to rename. Already have your other hand or a finger of it on the home
button but don't worry about keeping your first hand on the file icon.

Tripple click home and then double tap with the same finger you used before
to find the icon; the focus should not have been lost and the edit field
should come up. You can just use the clear text button and put the new name
in. This should be fixed but in the meantime, once you do it I think you
won't find it so difficult.

Re: Looking for an app to block callers

2012-11-04 Thread Grant Hardy
You can't do that on official, non-jailbroken phones; Apple doesn't
allow third-party developers to integrate with the phone app.

You have a few options though. One is contacting your carrier as some
companies offer this service. Another is to sign up for a service such
as Google Voice or Line2 since they give you a number and allow you to
set up rules for specific groups of callers. You may even be able to
port your number to one of these services, though depending on your
phone company it may not be possible to both port your number, and
keep your plan active with a new number.

You could always try the Youmail service, which is available in the
app store and replaces your carrier's voicemail service. There are
instructions for forwarding unanswered calls to Youmail, and you can
block certain parties from leaving voicemail messages. But of course,
they will still be able to ring through, and also they'll still be
able to text you.

sure that my kids have said that they can see the screen, just not enough to
read it...

this has translated into more battery life for the VO user over say

agree this is an issue that needs some work from the folks at apple.

If you are using the audible app, you go to info and then remove from
device and then delete. However as they are in your audiobooks library
within the music app it does seem odd but there doesn't seem to be a way to
delete. If you double tap andhold and then swipe to the right like you used
to for the delete function if you then moved to the left next to the buttons
at the bottom, there will be one called menus or something like that, but it
doesn't seem to do anything. double tapping on the actual book just open it
or play it depending on whether you're in a part or the whole book. It is
odd that there is no actions menu as there is with music and with lots of
other iOS six functions. I think it might be that you have to do what you
used to do in music before the actions menu when it came Up if you
double-tapped that, and held, swiped right, and then swipedleft again
quickly. I'm sure somebody can explain that better than I have, as they did
to me a few months ago. I would certainly be very interested in information
anyone can give regarding this. Is it worth reporting this to Apple
accessibility? Is it just something that has been missed off? It is quite
random. And seems daft.

Reading Ibooks.

2012-11-04 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
Hello All.

I am having problems reading IBooks on the I Phone.

I just don't get how to select contents or pages to read Books. Can someone
explain how this should be done please? Once I new what to do but have now
forgotten. I'd also like to read I Books in Braille but don't know what to do.

If someone wishes to explain, perhaps they should write to me off list as I
want a step by step guide if that is not too much trouble as I can't read the
books ow have on my I phone.

Thank you in advance as this help will be appreciated. Perhaps someone could do
a Podcast on this to demonstrate? Either in braille or using the Phone as I'd
like to be able to do both please.

Kawal.

Hi Teresa,
Unfortunately those commands don't work for braille as far as starting from the

RE: My iPod Touch 5th generation saga

2012-11-04 Thread Richard Turner
Well, my replacement iPod Touch 5th Generation is also shutting down on its
own at somewhere between 15 and 10 percent. It was last at 15 percent while
streaming the Seahawks game and I hadn't checked the battery status for a
few minutes and it announced it was shutting down.

So, I'm thinking either this is a much more wide spread problem that people
are not noticing because they plug it in after they get the 20 percent
warning, or there is some weird setting thing that is causing it.

I'll be talking with Apple at some length tomorrow. I suspect I'm going to
have to hand it over and let them run diagnostics for a while so they can
observe it doing this.
Who knows. I just know I'm disgusted.

Richard

Whenever you purchase an app, it will always, always be credited from your
gift card first. Of course if you do not have any money in your account then
it will be taken from your nominated card. Also if the app is more than what
you have in your account then the remaining balance is taken as well as the
difference taken from your nominated card.

You can't do that on official, non-jailbroken phones; Apple doesn't allow
third-party developers to integrate with the phone app.

You have a few options though. One is contacting your carrier as some
companies offer this service. Another is to sign up for a service such as
Google Voice or Line2 since they give you a number and allow you to set up
rules for specific groups of callers. You may even be able to port your
number to one of these services, though depending on your phone company it
may not be possible to both port your number, and keep your plan active with
a new number.

You could always try the Youmail service, which is available in the app
store and replaces your carrier's voicemail service. There are instructions
for forwarding unanswered calls to Youmail, and you can block certain
parties from leaving voicemail messages. But of course, they will still be
able to ring through, and also they'll still be able to text you.

Organizing Classical Music in iTunes

2012-11-04 Thread Traci
A very informative article if you are a classical music fan and want to
organize your collection better. I felt this post was fitting for both lists.

How I Organize Classical Music in iTunes
Wednesday, February 15, 2012 at 4:36 AM

Classical music in iTunes is a disaster. The track and album information that
is downloaded with your album is an inconsistent nightmare, and leaves one with
few options for creating a variety of rich playlists—which is almost
exclusively how I listen to my music.
To remedy this, I have a system which overhauls the existing track and album
data, and appends those data with rich metadata so that I can create a variety
of smart playlists. Here is my recipe.
Tidy Track Data and Add Metadata

Fix Album Composer

Unlike many people, I keep the composer of the work in the Composer field (many
people move it to the Artist field). I make sure I choose one consistent way to
spell the composer's name (Dvořák or Dvorak? you decide and stick with
one—personally I prefer the "řá" spelling), then I change it to a [last name],
[first name] format. And, I don't include the dates of birth and death, we have
Wikipedia for that. Once you have a composer in your library, subsequent
entries will autocomplete.
Add composer to sort fields

I put the composer, in the same [last name], [first name] format, in the Sort
Artist and Sort Album Artist fields. This bunches the works of one composer
together, but will not break up multi-composer albums. If you identify your
albums by the artist more than the composer, don't do this step.
Fix Album Artist

There are two fields here: Artist and Album Artist which, as you might imagine,
represent each track and the entire album, respectively. For the Artist field,
I tend to put the conductor and orchestra first, when applicable, and follow it
with any highlighted artists along with their reason for being highlighted.
Each artist is separated by a semi-colon. So, for example:
Leonard Bernstein, New York Philharmonic
Fritz Reiner, Chicago Symphony; Sidney Harth, Violin
Alfred Brendel, Piano
Stanislaw Wislocki, Warsaw National Philharmonic Orchestra; Sviatoslav Richter,
Piano
For the Album Artist, I typically put the most important artist first, without
any instruments or voices. If the album is known for the pianist, then he or
she will go first. If the album is best known for the conductor, then he will
appear first (why are there no female conductors?). I still join the conductor
and his orchestra with a comma, and separate other artists with a semi-colon.
For example:
Leonard Bernstein, New York Philharmonic
Fritz Reiner, Chicago Symphony; Sidney Harth (the piece is better known for
Reiner's work)
Alfred Brendel
Sviatoslav Richter; Stanislaw Wislocki, Warsaw National Philharmonic Orchestra
Now, I know what you're asking, what about those albums that have different
artists for different pieces on the album. Well, I personally hate when albums
have an Album Artist of Various Artists, but sometimes it is unavoidable,
particularly on compilation albums. However, if there are only two different
artists, I will join them together in the Album Artist field, thereby rescuing
it from the various artists section. The alternative is to break up
multi-artist albums so that they appear as different albums, but taken to its
extreme—compilation albums—this system breaks down. I vote to keep the original
album together.
Add Metadata

The Comments field can take a format-free string of characters, so I populate
this field with an assortment of metadata that describe the piece. These
include, in this order:
The Musical Period — Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, 20th Century,
or Modern.
The Musical Form — Symphony, Sonata, Concerto, Prelude, Rhapsody, Tone Poem,
Fugue, etc. If you don't know the form, then put Form?
The Ensemble — Solo, Duet, Trio, Quartet, Quintet, up to Nonet, and Orchestra
Highlighted Instruments — Violin for a violin concerto, Strings for a string
quartet, or Winds for Mozart's Serenade #10 for Wind Instruments. You get the
idea. Instruments can either be listed as a broad category, like Keyboard,
Strings, Winds, Voice, or they can be listed individually, like Harpsichord,
Cello, Oboe, etc.
The Album Date — if you feel the need, the original date that appears on the
album. Often the release date, which I include as Rel2007, or the recording
date, which I write as Rec1965. I don't pursue these dates, I only copy the
date from the Year field here, just to have a record of when the album was
released.
Date Uncertainty — if you don't know the date of the composition, which, as
you'll see next, I put in the Year field, I place a Date? at the end of the
Comments field.
Fix the Year

I like putting the year the work was composed in the Year field. This is a nice
way to put pieces in context w

RE: Looking for an app to block callers

2012-11-04 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Grant,

That statement about getting a "local Canadian" number is only true if you
happen to live in any of the larger cities like Vancouver, Edmonton,
Calgary, Toronto, Montreal etc. It is annoying me no end that I am not able
to get a local number just because I live in a small community in BC, but
that's just the way it is.

Regards,
Sieghard

Yes, it is; you get a Canadian or US local or toll free number with
texting and 5000 minutes of calling per month. The personal plan,
though, costs $9.99.

Re: Reading Ibooks.

2012-11-04 Thread Teresa Cochran
Hi, Kawal,

When you open IBooks for the first time, you're presented with the library.
This is where your books are organized. If you have books already, simply pick
a book and double-tap to open it. With speech, you can begin reading the book
by using the two-finger-downward-flick gesture. To pause and resume speech, you
use the two-finger-single-tap. With speech VO will read continuously and turn
pages as it goes. If you close IBooks in the middle of a book, it will retain
your place when you open it again. You can always find the library at the top
of the screen to choose another book.

With Braille, you have to pair a Bluetooth display. Unfortunately you do have
to turn pages manually with Braille by using dots 1-3-5-space for next page and
dots 2-4-6-space for previous page.

At the top of the screen are controls for Ibooks. When you go into the library,
you can choose "store" to shop for books.

Teresa

Re: iDevotional app: "My Utmost For His Highest."

2012-11-04 Thread Vicki Meizinger
Hi Jim, i just came from there. I saw utmost in his highest but not as a
regular devotional. there were different authrs and readers in each one
and they each costed about $14. There were 6 results for my search but
I didn't find a regular devvotional. you might want to go there and
contact customer service. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

Thanks all over the place gang.

Re: Home Security Systems

2012-11-04 Thread Les Kriegler
Hi Robin,

Well, this topic has just become of great interest. we have a security system
from Time Warner Cable. It's a an older system, however the newer system
supports an App for the iPhone. I spoke with a rep tonight and we tried out
the app on the call and it appears to be VoiceOver accessible. We are going to
meet with a rep soon to discuss its uses and I may either purchase the new
system, or perhaps switch over to ADT, we'll see how it goes. I'm interested
in the thermostat functions. I have a talking thermostat already, but I'd be
interested to know if I could control that remotely.

Re: Reading Ibooks.

2012-11-04 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hi,

In addition to what Teresa said, if you're using braille, read past the last
line, pan left, and then give the Next Page command. This will take you to the
top of the next page. And many braille displays have commands you can use
instead of Space with O and Space with 2-4-6. On the Focus 40 Blue, for
instance, pressing down on the right rocker button takes you to the next page,
while pressing up takes you to the previous one.

Anna

Re: exchanging places on iphone screen!

2012-11-04 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hello Ramy,

If there is a folder in a particular position on the screen, there is a spot
immediately to the right that will let you put an app in the position where the
folder was without putting the app in the folder. So find the folder and slide
your finger just slightly to the right. You should hear a click, and VoiceOver
will tell you which row and column you are on. Release your finger when you're
in the right place.

HTH,
Anna

Re: iDevotional app: "My Utmost For His Highest."

2012-11-04 Thread Cheryl Homiak
Vicki:
It isn't clear to me from your description where you were looking. Were you at
Christianaudio or in the iTunes store under apps.
Did you look at the iDevotional app itself which contains My Utmost for His
Highest. It costs $9.99 and I also would be a bit hesitant to buy it without
knowing if the items in it are accessible. But I suppose the only way we will
know is to have somebody buy it unless somebody has already done so and can
report on it. From the description, it accesses "Morning and Evening" and "My
Utmost for His Highest". I could be wrong, but I don't think it's an app from
within which you must buy other things so I'm not sure what the mention of
things that cost $14 each refers to. This is why I am thinking maybe you went
to Christianaudio directly instead of the app store but I'm not sure. Be
careful because I think there's a music app by the same name. Here is the link:
