Good news! The Seeing Eye GPS app can retrieve its data via WI-FI.
Hi. I got some extra money for my birthday, so I decided to purchase the Seeing Eye GPS app. I signed up for a one year subscription. I was planning on going to the T-Mobile store to switch to their data plan, but just out of curiosity I decided to examine the Seeing Eye app. It prompted me to set my current location as home, and I was surprised to find it knew I was near Lexington, KY, and it got my zip code right. I then set up a route to my credit union which I'll head to in about an hour. The app correctly found the location I wanted, and it started telling me where to head. I'm happy. Looks like I don't need a data plan to use the app, as long as I have WI-FI access to download local maps. I know this is somewhat limiting my use of the app, but if all goes according to Hoyle I can wait until next month to get a data plan for my iPhone. I have a trip to take Paterson, the flying dog to the Vet, and I'll enter that route into the app and see just how much of Lexington is covered by the map I got downloaded. If it covers the Lexington, Kentucky area then that's good enough for me. I know it will cover the neighborhood, but I'm curious how it will do farther away. I'll keep all of you updated. I hope to report that it works via WI-FI connections, and as long as you're at a hot spot you don't have to use your data. Now back to baseball and waiting for the credit union to open. GO REDS! . Accessible App. FREE. Little Riddles - Word Game
App Name: Little Riddles - Word Game Developer: Juxta Labs, Inc FREE Notes: The only thing that I have noticed while playing this game, is if you close the app, but you don't remove it from the app switcher, when you open the app again, you are placed at the bottom of the playing screen. It is easier to just remove the app from the app switcher and then reopen the app, or you could do a lot of flicking to get back up, as I have tried doing the gesture that should take me to the top of the screen, but it doesn't seem to work. Great little game though. Description: #1 word game! This game is ridiculously addictive and fun! Can you guess the word? Every level is a new riddle and clue. See if you can guess them all! * Instant FUN. No signup. No registration. Just play! * Tricky Riddles. Every Riddle is Little - some are easy, some are hard. See if you can beat them all! * HILARIOUS! Ok, they're not all funny. But a lot of them will make you LOL. * Hundreds of levels. You will not run out of riddles. I challenge you to play to the end. I was successfully able to get to the credit union, but I had no idea how to tell the app to get me home, and when I was outside of WI-FI range, the app couldn't calculate a route, which makes sense. Oh well. I'll be heading to the T-Mobile store this morning and get their unlimited, no throttling back if you reach a certain point data plan. It has two benefits for me. I can use the Seeing Eye app, and I can listen to the pitiful Reds while I have Paterson at the vet. I don't regret getting the app, it looks like it should work great for me. However, besides the Seeing Eye app and a less expensive one-time purchase app, BlindSquare is in my opinion the best app and superior to Ariadne and Sendero's LookAround. I only bought BlindSquare maybe a couple of months ago, but I find the way it announces cross streets the best and you can very easily set user defined points which are announced as you approach them. I definitely think you have to set the distance fairly short as far as the app announcing POI's otherwise it constantly starts talking and telling you all the stuff it finds, for me I find 60 metres which is the second shortest setting works well, I guess if you have it set to feet that would be just under 200 feet, there is only one lesser distance which is 26 metres or approx. 85 feet. Any time you create a user defined point you can tell the app to announce it when you come within a certain distance and that distance you can actually enter manually, so for example if you set a bus stop bench as a point you could tell it to announce it at a distance of 20 feet. In many cases I know I am approaching the bus stop and I only want the announcement which includes the direction when I am very close. Keep in mind that for the directions to work, e.g. Bus Stop 20 feet at 11 o'clock you have to point the phone straight ahead into the direction you are walking. I have a case with a belt clip and I can swivel that belt clip. If the phone is on your belt and points straight up and down the compass directions will not work, you have to either hold the phone and point it straight ahead or you have to be able to turn the belt clip so the phone is basically in landscape mode on your hip with the top of the phone where the headphone jack is pointing forward. Then you still have to make sure you position the belt clip so it's straight on the outermost point of your hip, if you have it forward or back to far towards your belly or back it will point off at a slight angle, i.e. instead of pointing towards 12 o'clock straight ahead it may point to 11

Re: response received about weather bug
That's their stock reply. They may fix it in the next update but sense they just did an update, I wouldn't hold my breath waiting. Even when the next version comes out, it could be fixed or made worse so it's 50/50. I like the app because they access the neighborhood network stations. We have one at the end of our block in the elementary school so I can't get any closer. To give you an idea of how close it is, when the kids are playing on the playground I can hear them from my yard. RE: Good news! The Seeing Eye GPS app can retrieve its data via WI-FI.
Hi Kevin, As Hope pointed out, the app won't be able to recalculate and I would be surprised if it gave you any information once you leave your Wi-Fi, e.g. cross streets/upcoming intersection information etc. Yes, the app will happily work on Wi-Fi and since it usesNavteq which is the same map source as Navigon, the entire United States should be covered, but once you are disconnected from your Wi-Fi, your GPS position which the iPhone gets from the satellites cannot be passed on to the Sendero server where it would be compared with the maps and feedback would be returned to the phone. GO REDS! RE: ACcessible apps for Searching For Flights?
Hi Kerri, Kayak Pro works and is accessible, I also downloaded Expedia and while I haven't used it to book a flight or hotel for that matter it seems accessible. Often the airlines also have apps, here in Canada the Air Canada app is quite good, it's accessible and I can book flights, check in, get my electronic bording pass and it integrates with Passbook which is nice because I can add my bording pass to Passbook. From what I have seen the airline apps are usually free, can't comment on accessibility for the American ones, however. For hotel bookings, in case you have to make any, the Booking.com app is probably the best. They have one of the largest selections of hotels, their prices are as good as any I have seen and they have been super responsive when I contacted them about 2 months ago about fixing a problem in their app. Voiceover used to be super sluggish and almost unusable once you had the list of search results on the screen, they released an update within a month after I contacted them which fixed the problem and the app now works great. I posted a few messages about this back in May and early June and you should be able to find them easy enough if you look in the archives for booking.com. an iPhone back up question
Hi I went for my phone upgrade. And I thought that I would give the android A try. Well before I get scolded for saying that on this list. Because it is for the iPhone. I am going back to the iPhone because a lot of the apps aren't there yet for accessibility yet. So when I go and get my iPhone 5 I have my user ID and password to my apple ID so I can enter that and open up the i cloud on my new phone and put in my apple user ID and password and tell my phone to back up from the cloud and have all of my settings and apps back that I had from before I briefly left the IOS platform. Or what all do I need to do to get all of my stuff back and folders back the way there where like on my old iPhone? -- Casey -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. RE: Using BlindSquare, was: Blind Square VS. My way classic?
Hello Sharonda, Here is what you do: In the app, find where Voiceover says My Places, search. You also want to make sure My Places is On which is one swipe past the My Places, search. My Places is right after where you set your distance and the first of all the items you can turn on, e.g. Arts and Entertainment, College and Universities, Food etc. Double tap on My Places, search Now at the top left you have the Back button, in the middle it says My Places, heading and it will tell you how many places it found within your search radius once you have added your own points. At the top right is the Add Place button. Double tap it, you can now enter a name for your place/point of interest, you can also turn on to be alerted when you approach the place, by default this is Off. If you turn it on, there will be an Alert Distance text field and a numeric style keypad is below where you can enter a value in feet (or metres) if you have your app set to metric) and this is the distance you want to be alerted at. For example, you may set a bench at a bus stop as a place or point and you might only want to be alerted if you are within 20 feet of it. Next is the Safe button. If you swipe further to the right you find some information about your GPS accuracy and other stuff. I've heard a rumour the developer is looking at more detailed announcement of intersections. If this happens it'll have pretty much everything I need in it. Ok it's not got it's own turn by turn but it links with other apps which have this adn I've found this to work fine. I was wondering where you might get belt clips from and how much they can be. I am in the UK but if anyone knows of any good models that'd be great. I'm starting to use GPS more and more and want to get the best I can out of it and know you can't always do this when your phone is in a pocket. I'm also using bone conducting headphones which work really well for hearing announcements and traffic. Louise. My way classic? Hi Fred, I have not yet purchased the Seeing Eye subscription, but I trust Sendero to deliver the most complete solution for a blind GPS user even if they may experience a few growing pains like the recent server outage etc. There are probably also features we all would like to have and which may take a while to be added. If the phone is on your belt and points straight up and down the compass directions

RE: an iPhone back up question
Sorry, but you are not receiving any answers for 6 weeks as punishment for your traitorous act. OK, joking aside, if you did an iCloud backup then just do a restore and everything should be restored, but of course it will take some time for all your apps to redownload. A backup only backs up settings, so the backup contains the information about which apps you had installed and the layout on your home screen, but the apps have to download again from the app store. While they do, they will say Waiting, then one by one they download. You also may find your home screen layout slightly different since the iPhone 5 has space for one extra row of icons on each home screen. Furthermore, you most likely will have to re-enter your passwords for any Wi-Fi networks you had. If you had done an encrypted backup via iTunes all the passwords would have been backed up as well. Lastly, any media such as music, ringtones, books etc. will not be part of the backup, those you have to resync with your new phone. And just as a very last general remark, I would have waited 2 months until the new iPhone comes out. You should definitely get an iPhone 5 which means at least that you should get all of the new iOS 7 features. spellchecker app alternatives question
Hi all, Do any of you know about an app for spell-checking? I use touch-type. You can paste clipboard in it and check. However it sometimes stalls if text is too big and punctuation mixes it up. With all the great braille writing apps that unfortunately don't have auto-correct access it would be nice to have alternatives. Thanks for your help! Emoticons - Was Re: using imontagons.
Hi, I fixed the spelling of the subject line. So, if you want to write the smilies or emoticons, there are several ways you can do this. Depending on who you ask, you will get different answers. I usually stick to the more traditional ones like smiles, frowns, and angry faces. However other people want Christmas trees, Checkered flags, ETC. If you want t list of what all is available in your iPhone, go to Settings General Keyboards and add the emoji keyboard. Now, the switch keyboards button will appear to the left of the space bar. When this keyboard is up, you have various categories from which you can pick. People, places, things, ETC. Once you pick a category, the keyboard will populate with the various ones from that list. You can flick left with 3 fingers to see more than what's visible on the first screen. To me this takes too much time and as I said, I prefer the more traditional ones. So, what I do is manually write out the emotiocn I want to use. Like :) or :( or, one of my favorites, :P. It's easy to think of what the emoticon represents if you can think sideways face, and what the symbols look like in print. The :) represents a smiling face because the colon in print is 2 dots, one right above the other, and the right parenthesis is a curved line with the curve out to the right. So, the 2 dots plus the curving line away from them, when turned sideways looks like 2 eyes and a smile. So, if you use :( which is a colon and a left parenthesis, the line is no longer curving away from the eyes, but toward them, like a frown. The :P is the 2 eyes with a rounded thing sticking out. This is because visually the letter P is a line with a circle toward the top and out to the right. So, this is the symbol for a tongue sticking out. Since there are many symbols or combinations of symbols to memorize, no one can know what all is out there. At the end of my post I've provided a link to a chart with many emoticons so you can write them out manually yourself. Oh, also, if you dictate with a 4S or newer, you can say the word smiley, or frowney and the right symbols will be put in for you. If there are others, I don't know of them. The chart follows. http://code.google.com/p/emoticony/wiki/Emoticons -- Raul A. Gallegos I can't live without y?o?u?. TEA. Re: Refund on blindsquare
I find your statement about BlindSquare not announcing the street you are on while in the car inaccurate. The street you are on is announced the entire time. Example, announcement says crossing 200 West and 1500 North. The road you are on is 200 West. The first street named is the street you're on, the second is the street you'll be crossing. Perhaps you need to go into settings and slow the voice down. Brett C. Re: Emoticons - Was Re: using imontagons.
I use emoticons all the time. Bud, I have set up keyboard shortcuts, so I can quickly insert them. When you are in the keyboard shortcut phrase edit field, open the Emoji keyboard and select the image you want, now go to the shortcut field and insert a two letter shortcut that you will remember. I usually use two letters the same such as a upper case s and a lower case s to represent the smiley I use. Then all I have to do is type those two letters and hit the space bar... Like this, Chuck (mobile) Pleez x cuze enny tie ping or spelin air ores. On Jul 10, 2013, at 10:37 AM, Raul A. Gallegos r...@raulgallegos.com wrote: Hi, I fixed the spelling of the subject line. TEA. Re: an iPhone back up question
I agree with Anthony, I actually went to a Verizon store here in the states and they messed up significantly the moving of apps from my old phone to another, best thing is to call the accessability number and let them walk you through it. Re: How do you restore to a previous version?
The only way you can restore an update, would be to make sure that you have the old version of the app on iTunes, and that you have not backed up your phone. After you've done the update if you have done the update, and have backed up your phone you're only going to get the current version you want not be over to get the previous. I hope I've explained this well and please ask if you have any questions. Re: Emoticons - Was Re: using imontagons.
Hi Just a FYI for those wanting to use emoticons, the IMG keyboard on the iDevices also has a recently used selection, so a person has quick access to frequently used emoticons. This makes things a lot easier than having to swipe through many pages and different categories to find a fav and frequently used emoticon. I set up my list by composing a message to myself with just the emoticons that I would most likely use. Now when composing a message my emoticons are readily available. Donna On Jul 10, 2013, at 1:37 PM, Raul A. Gallegos r...@raulgallegos.com wrote: Hi, I fixed the spelling of the subject line.
The app does provide more automatic feedback while in a vehicle, over all I think it's a good app, one suggestion I have for the app is to automatically announce distances to the next intersection as well as automatic announcements when you turn on to another street, while walking as well as in vehicles. Re: How do you restore to a previous version?
In order to do this, you would need to have the apps backed up in itunes, not sure if icloud lets you do that, but you could use itunes to restore the previous version of an app. Really though, that does not deal with the real issue, it just works around it. If a new version of an app has accessibility issues, contacting the developer to let them know is the best thing to do. Original message: I was reading a message in which someone stated that they would restore to a previous version of June in Radio if the new one did not work. I understand that the new version does work, however, I was curious with any app how you restore to a previous version? This is generally speaking, not specific to the tune in. App. Thanks. best main stream GPS app
Hey everyone. Been playing with 5 of the main stream GPS apps, navigon, tomTom, garmin, motionx GPS drive and magellan roadmate. I'd be curious to know what everyone else's favorite app is. For me, it's motionx GPS drive, hands down. It seems to provide the best instructions, and has good support for walking roots. Next would be the Garmin app I think. I would probably rank TomTom and Navigon next and put Magellan roadmate at the bottom, it has not been updated for a while and crashes when trying to do a google search. There's also another app, Telenav GPS, but it's not very useable because most of the buttons are unlabeled. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Re: Comparison of iPhone Cases
Hello Robin, I have had experience with OtterBox defender, OtterBox commuter, and delight proof cases. The OtterBox funds can get dirtier a whole heck of a lot easier than the life proof. So I really do think that the light cases maybe have a little bit more protection then the OtterBox cases, for instance my brother. Got his iPhone five about two months ago, and just a few weeks ago he was out working on a job. And he was driving a machine called a bobcat hysteron proteron of this pocket, and he did not notice it until he got home and by that time it was already dark. He went back to the job site, and they looked for his phone. The phone, and the case we're down the close together the case was shattered. But the phone only have one scratch on it whatsoever. So that just goes to show you how well protected a life proof case is. Re: ACcessible apps for Searching For Flights?
Hi: How did you figure out who to contact, and what did you say? I would like to possibly contact travelocity to make their app accessible. The only thing that isn't accessible about it is the calendar part, and if they would fix that, it would be fully accessible. Expedia seems to be accessible. I am able to search for flights. Thank you so much for telling me about tis app. Thanks, Kerri On 7/10/13, Sieghard Weitzel siegh...@live.ca wrote: Hi Kerri, Kayak Pro works and is accessible, I also downloaded Expedia and while I haven't used it to book a flight or hotel for that matter it seems accessible. Re: Taking Navigon offroad?
When I traveled to Alaska last Summer with my wife, I added a lot of POIs to Ariadne. The hotel in Anchorage is 3423 miles from my home. When we got off the cruise boat, I always added the end of the dock as a POI. Then we could always find our way back to the boat. My wife is sighted, but, if she was in a closet with one door labeled, exit, she would have problems finding her way out. With Ariadne, I'm the one who keeps track of where we are. A few months ago, I tried my way lite, and couldn't get it to work that well. When I got to a point, it told me the distance to the next point, but not the direction. I use ariadne for this kind of orientation. It also helped me out of a spot. I got on a city bus, but after getting on, the driver changed the route number and I started going to a different part of town than I was expecting to go. Using Ariadne, I knew where my house was, distance and clockface. So when I got as close as I could (1 mile) I got off and used it to get me home. If I had stayed on the bus to the transit station, then took the right bus, it would have taken me over an hour. I am anticipating the Breadcrumb app from LookTel. Re: best main stream GPS app
Hi, I've had the best luck with Navigon, although it's been a while since I've tried MotionX GPS. The last time I used it I felt that it's user interface was a bit clunky. For car traveling though, I use Waze gps. it's a social GPS, but provides very good instructions. Not meant for walking, but only for driving. Cheers. -- Raul A. RE: Skype?
Hi Rob, As some others have already pointed out, the Skype app is very accessible, I would call it extremely accessible. A 2-finger double tap will not start or end a call, to end a call you have to double tap the End Call button which is very easy to find since it's all the way across the bottom of the phone just above the home key. If you put your finger on the home key and move up just a bit you should hear End Call. You can also not use the headset control to answer or end a call and if you use the DialPad to manually dial a phone number you have to split or double tap. Touch typing does not work in any VoIP app i have ever seen, it must be a restriction from apple. RE: ACcessible apps for Searching For Flights?
Hi Kerri, Most apps have a link to either an email or support site. This could be in Help, About or More, depending how the app is laid out. You can, of course, always Google an app, find the developer's website and see if there is a contact form or email address listed. As for what to say, well, I usually tell the developer that I am a blind iPhone user and have to rely on Voiceover and Apple's fantastic built-in accessibility features to use my iPhone. I also often say that i am part of a google group where over 1,700 visually impaired iPhone users help each other and discuss apps and accessibility and that this list is constantly growing because Apple offers great accessibility and also more and more developers follow apple's accessibility guidelines to make sure their apps can be used by a Voiceover user. I then of course explain in as much detail as possible what about a particular app works or does not work and ask if the developer would be willing to look into this and hopefully improve the accessibility of his or her app. Regards, Sieghard -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Kerri Kosten Sent: Wednesday, July 10, 2013 3:13 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: ACcessible apps for Searching For Flights? I think motion x's instructions are also the most detailed, and I like the fact that you can always getthe current instruction spoken. Actually, the garmin app will do this too, but I think motion x's instructions are a bit better. Also, with motion x, you don't have to go in to settings to change between driving and walking.
