Tip of the Day: Subscribe to Website News Feeds via Shared Links Tab in Safari In my reporting on iPhone and iPad news, I constantly rely on a range of Apple-related websites. But rather than having to visit each one individually, I gather all their news feeds into a single web page, using the personalization feature of My Yahoo. At a glance I can see all the latest Apple news. These news feeds from websites are called RSS feeds. (RSS stands for rich site summary, though some people say it stands for really simple syndication.) There are RSS apps you can download that let you gather these news feeds. But you can also subscribe to news feeds in Safari. To subscribe to a website news feed or RSS feed in Safari, tap on the bookmarks icon in Safari. And tap on the third tab. This shows you the Shared Links. It will be empty if you haven't yet subscribed to any RSS feeds or social accounts. To add an RSS or news feed, go to a web page that has an RSS feed, which includes most websites that have news or a blog (but not iPhone Life, unfortunately). Tap Subscriptions down that bottom right of the Shared Links window. This brings up a window that shows your subscriptions. As an example, I'll go to the /MacWorld/ home page. Note that you typically need to be on the main home page in order to add that site's RSS feed. Once you're at the website you want, then down at the bottom of the Shared Links window, click Add Current Site. Macworld now appears as a Subscribed Feed. When I click Back to return to the Shared Links window, I see that Macworld's RSS feed has now been added. Each item includes a headline and a short summary. If you add feeds from multiple websites, they are integrated together in the Shared Links page organized chronologically with the most recent posts at top. Tap on an item in the news feed, and Safari opens the full page while simultaneously closing the Bookmarks window. /Did you enjoy this tip? Request for Personal Assistance Using Twitter Apps
Hello Everyone, I am trying to learn more about Twitter and the various accessible Twitter clients available to us. I have consulted Apple Vis and I use, to some extent at least, the native iOS Twitter client and, of course, the Twitter website. However, I would like to have an actual voice conversation with someone about Twitter. I would greatly appreciate it if someone from the list, who knows the nuances of Twitter and who is familiar with multiple iOS Twitter clients would contact me, off-list so we can exchange numbers or Skype info in prelude to a short one-on-one discussion. I thought when I put the headset down it would disconnect from the phone and then voiceover would speak through the phone again this does not seem to be happening. RE: Brother Air Print Laser printer question
Thanks, Richard. That’s the one I’m looking at. Is the wireless access, for iPhone or laptop, directly with the printer, or does one or the other, or both, go through the router? Thanks. I’ll be getting one of these, too! But, my wife and I just bought a Brother HL 2360 Duplex wireless laser printer, black not color. We got it for both use with our laptops and with the iPhones. Since we were using it for the computers, I just let my wife run the install from the CD, which also had a routine for setting up the wireless. It took maybe 2 or 3 minutes and it works great! I think, but do not know, that one could set it up without the computer, but I suspect there would be a step or two that required sight, but I'd contact Brother directly and find out. We really like Brother printers. It has a 250 sheet paper tray and prints 32 pages a minute. RE: i watch app
Lori, First of all, the actual watch as well as the app are called “Apple Watch”, there is no such thing as “iWatch”. The Apple Watch will be available for preorder on April 11 and those who do buy it will first get it on April 24 so until then nobody really knows what it will be like and all one can say is based on information Apple has released. If you are curious about what it can do the best resource is probably Apple’s keynote from about 2 weeks ago which you can find on their website or you can subscribe to the Apple Keynotes podcast with any podcast app. As for the app, it can’t do really anything by itself, it is simply a way to do things with an Apple Watch. You will, for example, have to use the app to enable accessibility features of the watch like Voiceover and currently the only way you can buy apps for the watch is via the app on the phone. The watch without a connected phone at this point can’t do anything although I actually wonder if it can at least tell the time. For example, let’s say you run out of battery on your iPhone, do you have a completely useless piece of high-tech on your wrist which can’t even tell you the time or can it at least do that? RE: Just use Sonos, was: Stereo Receivers That Can Be Operated With An App?
Hi Christopher, They are convenient, but I'm no big fan of bluetooth except for listening to audio books and so on. Until recently I was really recommending the Turtle Shell 2 from Outdoor Tech, but of course not everybody wants a water-resistant speaker and by now there are also other options out there which are probably at least as good or better. I think Logitech is worth checking out, but I really haven't kept up with the latest so much because my Turtle Shell 2 will do me for some years to come I think. If you want something really good sounding and don't mind if it has to be plugged in then Sonos really is at the top of my list with the Play 1 or Play 3 depending on your budget. Agreed, I'd never go bac to a entertainment center with speakers in the corners and wires everywhere. I don't think Arnold ever said whether he was talking about a prewired house or not, and I just thought that was one scenario where a home theater receiver might fit the bill. I got my son a bluetooth speaker for his smart phone over Christmas, and I decided they were so convenient, I'm planning on getting myself one this summer. I'm planning on checking with you before I buy anything to see what the latest and greatest options are. On 03/15/2015 12:37 AM, Sieghard Weitzel wrote: HiChristopher, I also don't disagree with what you say although there is a big difference between wiring a room or house when its being built and trying to retrofit an existing house with in-wall wiring and speakers. When I bought my house in 1996 it was a spec home, but I bought it early on so the inside walls had only been framed and not drywalled. I also went ahead at that point and installed speaker wires for built-in ceiling and in-wall speakers since I had an Onkyo receiver even back then which was capable of handling 2 independent zones. I had the main zone hooked into speakers in my living room with rear speakers built into the ceiling above the couch and the second zone was hooked up to a Niles 4-port speaker switch which provided signal to my bedroom, bathroom, office and kitchen. Of course those rooms wee not able to play independent sources although I did have in-line volume controls in each room so I could turn the volume all the way down if I didn't want sound in a particular room. A nyhow, the point is that I do come from a more traditional background and while a number of receivers nowadays are capable of being hooked up to a router and handling certain online subscriptions, I highly doubt any one of them handles as many as Sonos and in as accessible a format. A solution with such a receiver also does not give you the flexibility and scalability that Sonos offers when it comes to expanding into different rooms without any fuss and the variety of Sonos gear nowadays makes the system just ever so appealing. I am now just waiting for their long-anticipated headset which I really hope is coming this year or if not this year then next year. Every time I talk to their support and mention it they tell me that they get a ton of requests for a headset and I'm quite sure it's going to become reality in the near future. Then I can enjoy all my Sonos system has to offer with perfect privacy and without disturbing my wife or anybody else. I know that I could get a really go od wireless headset and hook it into one of the RCA or optical digital outputs of one of my Sonos players, but I don't want to spend the money for a really good wireless headset knowing Sonos will most likely have one which will be fully integrated into their system in the near future. Also, Sonos has one other advantage which most receivers don't have and that is the fact that you get regular software updates which improve the system and which ensure that new music services are available. Deezer lossless, for example, is only available via Sonos at least at this point. I had a free 1 year Deezer subscription which came with the purchase of my Playbar and just last week I received an offer from Deezer to upgrade to their Deezer Elite lossless service for a ridiculous $36.50 for an entire year. Normally that service is $20 a months and it is an awesome offer and the sound quality is amazing. RE: iWatch
No,theApple Watch requires a connection to the iPhone. All things like notifications and so on only work when a phone is paired with the watch. They did say the watch has 8 Gb of memory and some of that can be used to store music so it may be possible to use the watch without a phone to play music or a book by itself, but you certainly won’t get text messages, emails, other notifications or phone calls without the iPhone. At this point the Apple Watch is meant to be a companion device for the iPhone and not a stand-alone device. RE: Weather Stations
HiBarry, Yes, you guys sure got hammered this winter. Here it was the opposite, a lot of rain even into mid and late November when it usually snows and not much snow and very mild except for a couple of cold snaps which never lasted for more than a few days or a week. I also brought my rain gauge in before the winter since I assume that even if it did rain during the day, it would not be that good for it if all that moisture inside freezes at night. Anyhow, I only got it late in the summer and never mounted it yet. I just had it sitting on the table on my deck, maybe not perfectly level, but pretty close. You can use any quarter inch 20 thread count screw to mount it and I'll find a way to do so in a few weeks once we are mostly frost-free at night. As for my outdoor module, I keep that in the space under my deck, that way it is out of direct sunlight but the 5 foot space under my deck is wide open so that I get good temperature and mostly good humidity level readings as well. Now, as for the Netatmo weather station, it's basically yes to all your questions. If you buy the basic package for $180 you get 1 indoor and 1 outdoor module. The indoor module gives you indoor temperature, minimum and maximum indoor temperature from 12:01 AM to Midnight, indoor humidity, CO2 level, noise level in decibels and barometric pressure is displayed. The outdoor module measures current temperature, minimum and maximum temperature, it gives you Feels Like temperature and also shows outdoor humidity. You can buy up to 3 more additional indoor modules for $79/each if you want readings for other rooms/areas of your house, they are like the outdoor modules and give you everything except for noise level since that uses too much battery power and requires the main indoor module which needs to be plugged in. Netatmo also offers a rain gauge which is of the tipping bucket design and which works great. It gives you total rainfall starting at 12:01 AM until Midnight, but if you want to know you have to check just before midnight because while the previous day's amount is there for sighted people, it is currently not accessible with Voiceover. When Netatmo first came out it was almost completely inaccessible. I bought a station and contacted the company. Their head developer in Paris, France got a hold of me and we had several Skype conversations about accessibility, he made changes which I tested and the result was a very accessible app which gives you most readings, but not all of them. I'm not pushing home theater receivers or knocking Sonos, and I listen carefully to everything Sieghard says, especially when it comes to audio, but I have one tiny point of clarification. Home theater receivers do come with the ability to tap into subscription music services and do support DLNA, so you can access your music from a network attached storage device. The Yamaha RX-V773 receiver I own has these features, and it's obviously not unique. We built our house a few years ago, and we had it wired for a 7.2 surround sound system in the family room, so we don't have big bulky speakers or wires anywhere. I've looked into Sonos recently, and I may still go that option in the future for some situations, but for my living room, I don't think it beats just dropping a network capable home theater receiver into my AV cabinet. Re: Reliably Using the the find command with a Braille Display
The first app that comes to mind is Voice Dream Writer. It has its own search button, which works well but isn't quite as slick as the search feature on a notetaker. Still, you can edit as you read, and there are other features in there you may find useful. I haven't tried this app with a braille display, though; someone else can say whether it works as well as I'm thinking it would. I have each song sequentially numbered. I would simply like to be able to press chord+f on my focus 40 Blue type in the number and press chord+e or chord+dot 8 and be placed on that number ready to continue on reading the lyrics. I have tried a number of apps, drafts, Nebulas, MS-word Voice Dream Writer and others. The most success I had was with AccessNote In review mode and using dot 8 commands. However, it no longer works properly in iOS8.2 for me. I am using an iPhone 6. When I use the find buttons in the toolbars with some apps they will find the text but then when I press return I am placed back at the beginning of the document. Note that before I press the return I press space with dots 45 to enable the edit field to accept the braille input. I have automatic Braille translation turned off. I tried turning it on but this made know difference. I also sometimes need to make a change on the fly which is problematic when in a review mode. I have a BrailleNotPk but every time I update the file on the mac I have to go through the process of copying the file via a card reader onto the flash card of the PK. While the find command on the PK works perfectly If I could use the 40 cell Braille display it would make reading some of the lyrics easier, especially if it is a faster piece. It would be nice to simply sync my changes and be ready to rock-and-roll Is this an issue for many of you or am I going about things in the wrong way? Thanks. LG HBS-730 -- Got It
I got these last week, upon several recommendations here I wanted to say thanks to all those who gave descriptions of the devices and its features. They are very nice. If I have any problem, it is the style ear tip. I am using the smallest ones, but they still just don't suit me. Does anyone know of other tips I could buy and use. At one time, I had probably 50 pair of various tips, but I finally dumped them all. One style I really liked was sort of cone shaped with the pointed end going into the ear first. They had rings of flange to keep them held in place. I am guessing it would be nearly impossible to go through Amazon to find something else that would work although in many reviews of headphones you will see people suggest alternative covers or tips. Thanks again for the recommendation. Even with the tips, I will find them most useful. Eric -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. View this tip and other tips at iPhoneLife.com Your Tip of the Day is sponsored by: Sponsors make free tips tricks possible. Visit the above link to keep the free tips coming! As an example, I'll go to the MacWorld home page. Did you enjoy this tip? Re: Reliably Using the the find command with a Braille Display
Hi. The problem is that I do not know of any apps that you can both read and write in. I have used chm+ and also chmate with the braille search function. In some apps you can search, and when you will have to use vertical navigation in the router. Best regards Annie. I haven't tried this app with a braille display, though; someone else can say whether it works as well as I'm thinking it would. Re: Brother Air Print Laser printer question
Keith, I can't really answer your question. Reliably Using the the find command with a Braille Display
Hello All. I am involved with a singing group and have been keeping the lyrics to the songs in a large text file. Thanks. Re: i watch app
Lori, the Apple Watch app was included in the latest update of the iOS software for iPhone. Within the app is another item for the Apple Watch app store. I can only assume that that new store would let you download apps for the Apple Watch. If you decided to get the Apple Watch, get ready for sticker shock. They start at $350. Re: LG HBS-730 -- Got It
You might try checking with an audio equipment seller like Sweetwater.com They sell all kinds of earphones and might be able to suggest something. Unlike amazon and the like, you can call and speak to someone who really knows about the stuff they are selling. On 3/19/15, SSEric sseri...@gmail.com wrote: I got these last week, upon several recommendations here I wanted to say thanks to all those who gave descriptions of the devices and its features.
