Amazon Echo in Canada

2016-03-27 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi,

Just wondering if any Canadian list members own an Amazon Echo and how
capable it is here. I was listening to the Cool BlindTech Podcast from CSun
with the guy from Amazon and while I am not heavily invested in the Amazon
ecosystem with music, movies, Kindle or even a prime membership, I am an
avid and daily Audible user and the Echo does intrique me when it comes to
Audible and some other things also. But considering it is not available from
Amazon.ca I wonder how much of what it can do it can do here in Canada. It
really is too bad that Apple who pioneered the digital assistant with SIRI
is fallen so far behind, SIRI should be able to do all the Echo can do and
more. How cool would it be if the new Apple TV had the same capability,
instead of pushing a button on the remote it could be listening just like
the Echo does and accept commands and for when the TV is not on the option
to hook up a speaker could provide output for requests.

Regards,

Sieghard

I have the sport, and my screen has no scratches at all. I also am very

I hear the sport screen scratches easy. I bounce off walls at times. LOL.
Prob will come out with next gen in September.

The Sport works great for me because the price was right since Apple cut

Re: apple watch questions

2016-03-27 Thread Chuck Dean
Hi, I have the 38 mm stainless steel watch with the stainless steel
Milanese band. I like it a lot! It is, however, a fairly expensive watches
as it cost $705 delivered.

I got the 38 mm because I have small wrists, and the 42 mm would have been
too big on my arm.

I was originally considering buying the gold watch, until I saw the price
tag.

The thing I like most about my watch, is it prevents me from pulling my
iPhone out of my pocket 50 to 60 time today. I can check the time, weagher,
stock quotes, my calendar etc. etc. on the watch. I also had an app RSS on
Watch which I really enjoy. It gets me small news blurbs from all around
the world from all sorts of different feeds.

I also use Apple Pay almost every day.
Good luck!

Chuck

Hi,

After one year of development, I'm excited and proud to announce that a massive
update, Voice Dream Reader 4.0 for iOS, will be released this week.

New features include a beautiful new UI, library synchronization, image and
rich text support, new reading modes, 3D Touch and multitasking, and much more.
The complete feature list is at the end of this email.

And best of all, the release will come as a completely free update. We love our
customers, and this is my way of saying "Thanks". Thank you for spreading the
word about Voice Dream Reader.

I want to highlight a few features in the release that I'm particularly excited
about.

* Pac-man reading mode. The latest

research at MIT and Harvard shows that everyone can double their reading speed
with no loss of comprehension. The new technique combines audio, visual, and
attention propulsion that's counter-intuitive. The words disappear from the
page before they're spoken by text-to-speech, forcing the reader to read ahead
visually with audio arriving a fraction of a second later. With some practice,
the results can be staggering.
* Finger reading. Some readers, particularly emerging readers, struggle
to follow even the slowest speed, which is also distorted. With finger reading,
the reader traces the words on the screen with a finger to hear each word, much
like how a parent reads for a child.
* Scanning. On an iPhone 6s or 6s plus, you can press firmly on the fast
forward button while the app is reading -- also called Force Touch -- to double
the reading speed. Release it slightly to return to normal speed.

These are just a few of the many discoveries that await you in the new release.

Permit me to take a moment to wax nostalgia on this project I began more than 4
years ago when I wrote the first line of code for Voice Dream Reader. A few
days ago, I received this email:

Subject: Graduation Day

Hi Winston,

March 29, 2016 will be my last day at Brandeis University and on May 22, 2016
(commencement date), I will graduate with my Masters of Science in Health and
Medical Informatics from the Graduate Professional Studies (GPS) at Brandeis.
In addition, I was nominated and accepted as the Student Marshall for the 2016
GPS which is an honor for me, my family, my fellow students and Voice Dream
Reader. It is your application which has made my educational experience
exhilarating.

I want to reach out to you and thank you so much for the dedication you and
your family have given to the process of creating Voice Dream Reader. Your
application has freed me from the shackles of the printed word which had once
held me hostage. Today, I'm consuming the printed word and enjoying the gifts
of the authors’ knowledge the world brings to me through books from Bookshare.

Thank you again. God bless you and feel free to reach out to me at any time.

Sincerely

Davis W. Graham

Over the last 4 years, more than 200,000 people around the world, like Davis,
discovered that the gift of literacy is within easy reach of everyone. When I'm
working into the wee hours of the night tracking down an elusive bug, I'm
deeply thankful for emails like these.

So, more than your spreading the word about Voice Dream Reader, thank you for
making my life's work fulfilling.

Best,

Winston.

Or you can set the media kind through the "get info" dialogue in iTunes. You
can also set the option to skip when shuffling and remember playback position

Hi,

After one year of development, I'm excited and proud to announce that
a massive update, Voice Dream Reader 4.0 for iOS, will be released
this week.

New features include a beautiful new UI, library synchronization,
image and rich text support, new reading modes, 3D Touch and
multitasking, and much more. The complete feature list is at the end
of this email.

And best of all, the release will come as a completely free update.
We love our customers, and this is my way of saying "Thanks". Thank
you for spreading the word about Voice Dream Reader.

I want to highlight a few features in the release that I'm
particularly excited about.

* *Pac-man reading mode*. The latest research at MIT and Harvard

shows that everyone can double their reading speed with no loss
of comprehension. The new technique combines audio, visual, and
attention propulsion that's counter-intuitive. The words
disappear from the page /before/ they're spoken by
text-to-speech, forcing the reader to read ahead visually with
audio arriving a fraction of a second later. With some
practice, the results can be staggering.
* *Finger reading*. Some readers, particularly emerging readers,
struggle to follow even the slowest speed, which is also
distorted. With finger reading, the reader traces the words on
the screen with a finger to hear each word, much like how a
  parent reads for a child.
* *Scanning*. On an iPhone 6s or 6s plus, you can press firmly on
the fast forward button while the app is reading -- also called
Force Touch -- to double the reading speed. Release it slightly
  to return to normal speed.

These are just a few of the many discoveries that await you in the
new release.

Permit me to take a moment to wax nostalgia on this project I began
more than 4 years ago when I wrote the first line of code for Voice
Dream Reader. A few days ago, I received this email:

/Subject: Graduation Day/

/Hi Winston,/

May 22, 2016 (commencement date), I will graduate with my Masters
of Science in Health and Medical Informatics from the Graduate
Professional Studies (GPS) at Brandeis. In addition, I was
nominated and accepted as the Student Marshall for the 2016 GPS
which is an honor for me, my family, my fellow students and Voice
Dream Reader. It is your application which has made my
educational experience exhilarating./

/I want to reach out to you and thank you so much for the
dedication you and your family have given to the process of
creating Voice Dream Reader. Your application has freed me from
the shackles of the printed word which had once held me hostage.
Today, I'm consuming the printed word and enjoying the gifts of
the authors’ knowledge the world brings to me through books from
Bookshare./

/Thank you again. God bless you and feel free to reach out to me
at any time./

/Sincerely/

/Davis W. Graham/

Over the last 4 years, more than 200,000 people around the world,
like Davis, discovered that the gift of literacy is within easy reach
of everyone. When I'm working into the wee hours of the night
tracking down an elusive bug, I'm deeply thankful for emails like these.

So, more than your spreading the word about Voice Dream Reader, thank
you for making my life's work fulfilling.

Best,

Winston.

Hi.

I experience that it has improved a lot to use digit-eyes with the new IPhone

Best regards Annie.

Re: how to put audio book on iDevice

2016-03-27 Thread Richard Turner

My first recommendation is to make sure the file names are sequential so that
the computer sorts them from 1 to 10. Then, zip them into a file with the file
name being the title of the book.
Then, put that zip file on DropBox, and use Voice Dream Reader to import the
file.
What you will end up with, is a book that has 10 chapters and it will always
start where you leave off and you can adjust the playback speed quite easily.

Otherwise, I'd recommend using some other application to convert them into
properly tagged m4b files which iTunes will see as an audio book.
People have recommended applications for that, but I personally don't use that
method.

Re: Interval Timer

2016-03-27 Thread Lois Butterfield
Hi Gordon,

I use Chime Squirrel. It’s easy to use once you figure it out, and you can set
different sounds. Vibrations aren’t possible though. I don’t know how much it
costs. It won’t show me the price since I already have it. It wasn’t much
though.

I use it for running if I’m doing speed work. You set one interval at a time,
hours, minutes, and seconds.

Take care,

Subject: Interval Timer

Hi!
Regarding my job I'd need an interval timer. To be more precise, the app would
need to have options to settimers with different length who could alert me in,
let's say, every five minutes.
So, I set the main timer for 60 mins, set the single beep every five minutes
and set some sounds for 15, 30 and 45 minutes so I don't have to look on my
watch while doing my job. I used the Gymboss Timer few years ago for this
purpose but the new version is not accessible as the previous was.
It would also be nice if I could use vibration alerts instead of beeps and
gleeps.
I'd prefer a free app but the price of few bucks is not a problem.
I Have an idea for workoround with "empty" sound files with pre-recorded alerts
but I'd rather have an dedicated app for doing this.
Thanks for your suggestions.

Hi Sarai,

I received the Apple Watch Sport for Christmas, and love it so far. I have the
smallest model, which I personally like, because I can’t imagine having
anything bigger on my wrist. I have the silicon band, but I wouldn’t mind
getting a woven nylon band one day.

have also noticed that unlike in the app switcher, the order of the

BARD Mobile from left to right, if you go from BARD Mobile to the
calendar, those apps stay in the same position. This is different from
the app switcher since once you double tap an app, it is transposed or
switches places with whatever the app to the left of the home screen

The One does work with the phone app. You do need sighted help to set it up
now though. Once you are set up with the account, and you have the One
connected, the app is very accessible.

You can see steps, distance, minutes of activity. You can also set silent

Unfortunately, the Apple watch counts steps by arm movements. If you walk
on a treadmill holding the rail or walk with a guide dog, or holding
someone's arm, the steps will not count.

I have a FitBit One that I clip to my waist or pocket. It counts steps very

I love my Apple watch but not for counting steps.

An Apple Watch. They are on sale at Best Buy starting at $249 which is the
price of a more feature packed fitbit and unlike the fitbit they are
accessible and work with the iPhone without needing third party apps.
Yesterday I logged over 3,000 steps just cleaning the house while wearing my
Apple Watch and I had not even taken my phone off the charger. As an added
bonus I got a phone call while making dinner and my phone was in the bedroom
so I answered the phone on my watch. The watch band on the Apple Watch also
fits better than the fitbit. They are notorious for falling off. Amazon even
sells little bags of accessories that you can put on your fitbit to help
keep it from falling off your arm because the issue is so prevalent.
The only downside for me is I'm getting attitude from Siri times three. My
Apple TV 4, my Apple watch, and my iPhone 6S+. If I get any more attitude
from Siri, Siri, and Siri I'm going to get an inferiority complex and start
thinking I'm no better than any other human being. Laughs!

Interval Timer

2016-03-27 Thread Gordan Radić

Hi!
Regarding my job I'd need an interval timer. To be more precise, the
app would need to have options to settimers with different length
who could alert me in, let's say, every five minutes.
So, I set the main timer for 60 mins, set the single beep every five
minutes and set some sounds for 15, 30 and 45 minutes so I don't
have to look on my watch while doing my job. I used the Gymboss
Timer few years ago for this purpose but the new version is not
accessible as the previous was.
It would also be nice if I could use vibration alerts instead of
beeps and gleeps.
I'd prefer a free app but the price of few bucks is not a problem.
I Have an idea for workoround with "empty" sound files with
pre-recorded alerts but I'd rather have an dedicated app for doing
this.
Thanks for your suggestions.

net gear internet card

2016-03-27 Thread Larry McCreary
Hello,
I am looking at an internet card net gear mobile. I am interested in a card
that I can purchase mobile data as I need it. I may need a lot 1 month and
none for 4 months.
If anyone knows about this card or a way I can get what I want I would
appreciate it. The card I am looking at is possibly on sprint.
I appreciate your help.

RE: apple watch questions

2016-03-27 Thread Merv Keck
I got the sport with the smaller screen. I think they call that the 38 mm.
size. The band that comes with it has a very plastic feel but they make a lot
of other bands that can be purchased as well. I am very surprised at how light
this feels. It is so light and fits so snug against my arm I honestly forget
that it is there. Now let's see how long it takes them to come out with a new
generation of Apple Watch since I just got mine. Laughs!

Re: Need to Check Status of IOS Update on iPhone

2016-03-27 Thread christopher hallsworth
Hi

You can't. iOS updates should happen automatically, but only for the download.
The installation must be agreed upon by the user by accepting Apple's terms of
service. But now you have updated somehow without warning, do a three finger
swipe from left to right from the "hello" screen to continue setup.

RE: Need to Check Status of IOS Update on iPhone

2016-03-27 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Donnie,

As Christopher said, your Mom probably was presented with a message asking to
accept the terms and conditions for the update and did so without understanding
what she did. I have heard this from time to time where people complain
something happened automatically and when it really comes down to it it was
done because they agreed to something without reading it or reading it and not
understanding it. I don't know how old or tech savvy your Mom is, but it is
easily possible for somebody older or somebody who is used to saying Yes or I
Agree because that is what we usually have to do when we install anything on a
computer and so on.

There is no way to turn automatic updates off on the iPhone as far as them
downloading to your device. However, the device does has to be plugged in and
be connected to WiFi for an iOS update to download. If you always turned off
WiFi when the phone is plugged in updates would not download. Alternatively, we
typically know when iOS updates are released so just make sure you tell your
Mom that day to make sure she doesn't say "I Agree" to any messages.

Having said all this, what iPhone does your Mom have? Unless she has a 5S or
older and was affected by this bug which caused Apple to pull the update for
older devices having updated to iOS 9 should not give her any trouble at all.
Once again, Christopher already pointed out that this message is quite normal
and all you have to do is to double tap on that message, it doesn't matter what
language it is currently in, but you can always wait untilit's in English, the
languages cycle around and if you touch the screen from time to time you'll
come across the English message of "Slide to set up" soon anough, just double
tap and you can finish the steps involved in completing the update.

Accessible fitness trackers

2016-03-27 Thread Cristóbal
Hello list,

This question is kind of a spinoff of another thread about fitbit tracker
accessibility for step counting.

Does anyone know of an accessible activity tracker that can be used for
other activities such as rowing, stationary bike useage or with an
elliptical and exercises of this nature?

It looks like for walking/running, there are enough options out there. Be it
a standalone device or even apps like iTreadmill, etc. But what if you’re
interested in other types of exercise?

I don’t want to pay a premium on equipment for fancy shmancy digital screens
and whatnot that I can’t really access anyway and am not sure how if all are
accurate to begin with.

A simple upright stationary bike or rower or basic elliptical would more
than fit my needs if I had an accessible means of tracking progress be it
with an iOS app associated with a third party device or if one of the newer
iPhones could do it by itself. I’m not terribly keen on getting an Apple
Watch and haven’t heard much if anything on whether one can be used to track
these types of exercises either.

Does anyone know of anything that is accessible? Be it by itself or through
an iOS app?

Thanks,

Re: Need to Check Status of IOS Update on iPhone

2016-03-27 Thread Christopher Chaltain
What do you mean it was stuck on the screen where it displays the
greeting in those different languages? This is normal. Are you saying
you weren't able to double tap or three finger swipe to get past that
screen?

IOS doesn't get updated automatically. It gets downloaded automatically,
and you may be asked if you want it to update later, like over night,
but it won't update without you accepting the terms and conditions.

RE: Blind low vision survey - win Samsung health tracker, Audible gift cards, Saks Fifth Avenue handbag and more

2016-03-27 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I’d be careful with this survey, there are 4 red flags that went up for me:

1. The survey link is a Google shortened link so no way to know where it
will take you

2. The promise of the somewhat strange prizes

3. The fact that where he wrote he can be contacted for questions the
email address is given as text with the @ symbol and period written out as “at”
and “dot” in order to prevent it from being recognized as an email address one
can click on. When I translate the email address the way he wrote it into an
actual email address, it is philsoatpcs2...@tc.columbia.edu
  which sounds suspicious to me.

4. The email address he is posting from is hidden, but when you extract
is from the header it is philso1...@gmail.com so
nothing to do with a University or even the email address he is given where he
can be contacted. The websites of Columbia University is www.columbia.edu
and the one ofBaruch College is www.baruch.cuny.edu
, one would expect he would have an email from one
of these domains.

Lastly, I googled this college he mentions and it does exist and is listed as
one of 10 senior colleges of the City University of New York, but it’s strange
he claims to be with Columbia University and City University. Like I said, I’d
think twice before doing the survey or even clicking on the link until Cara or
Mark say they have checked into this and it’s legit.

RE: apple watch questions

2016-03-27 Thread Merv Keck
Hi,
I purchased the sport on Friday, two days ago, and so far I am enjoying it
immensely. I am going to need to purchase a book such as Mosen's Manual for
this as well as the Apple TV 4 for my purchases I made Friday but both the
Apple Watch Sport and the Apple TV 4 are working out fine now that I have them
speaking the same language that I speak.
The Sport works great for me because the price was right since Apple cut it to
$299 and Best Buy had it for $249. And screen size doesn't matter to me
anymore. For now I got just the band that came with it but eventually would
like to get a leather band and have it put on instead.
I really love all the health and fitness oriented things on there and answering
the phone on my wrist never gets old.
Hope that helps.
Merv

fitbit products

2016-03-27 Thread Lois Butterfield
Hi Terry,

The One does work with the phone app. You do need sighted help to set it up
now though. Once you are set up with the account, and you have the One
connected, the app is very accessible.

You can see steps, distance, minutes of activity. You can also set silent
alarms.

Take care,
Lois

Unfortunately, the Apple watch counts steps by arm movements. If you walk
on a treadmill holding the rail or walk with a guide dog, or holding
someone's arm, the steps will not count.

I have a FitBit One that I clip to my waist or pocket. It counts steps very
accurately.

Laughs!

If you do a search for, Audio Description, in iTunes with the store selected,
it will give you a current list of audio described movies. I do wish it was
included in the details, but I found this helpful and was surprised that they
do have a few.

If you really want a helpful answer, you need to give more information.
What format is the book?
What is the source of the book?
Where do you have it now?
That all would help.

But, if you go to their web site and register, I know you can get

GO to www.applevis.com
I hope that helps.

If anyone knows of a workaround, please, I'd love to hear from you.

Thanks.

Re: fitbit products

2016-03-27 Thread Lois Butterfield
Unfortunately, the Apple watch counts steps by arm movements. If you walk
on a treadmill holding the rail or walk with a guide dog, or holding
someone's arm, the steps will not count.

I have a FitBit One that I clip to my waist or pocket. It counts steps very
accurately.

I love my Apple watch but not for counting steps.

Take care,
Lois

Laughs!

What format is the book?
What is the source of the book?
Where do you have it now?

Re: unlimited gold for twenty-four hours

2016-03-27 Thread Krister Ekstrom
Hello,
As far as i understand it, the 24 hour unlimited gold means that every bonus
roll you make is free during that time, that is, you don’t pay anything for
using bonus rolls.
Hope this helps.

Re: 3-D touch moving apps

2016-03-27 Thread Lois Butterfield
I agree. I have never had a problem moving apps at all. I never even
thought about a potential problem. Double tap and hold is nothing like
firmly pressing on an icon. I really like the 3-D touch.

Take care,
Lois

The same way as always, if you want to move an app you double tap and hold
on it, this never seems to interfere with 3D touch for me.

Using voiceover, how does one move apps while 3-D touch is activated?
