some hulu questions

2016-04-26 Thread Jed Barton

Hey guys,
I decided to download hulu and try it for a month, wow, this is awesome.
1 of the things i noticed, when you start playing an episode, it goes
in to landscape mode and the phone orientation changes. Is this normal?
1 of the networks i love to watch on tv is investigation discovery. In
the networks section of the app, is there any way i can favorite it, and
get notified of new episodes?
In your general experience, how often does content on these various
networks get updated?

Thanks,
jed

RE: Question about wifi

2016-04-26 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Rena,

If you mean whether you need a cell signal then the answer is no. A WiFi
network is typically produced by your home router or wireless modem from your
internet provider or you can of course connect to all sorts of public WiFi
networks such as at Starbuck coffee shops, many hotels, libraries etc.
Theoretically your phone can be in airplane mode with just WiFi turned on for a
WiFi connection to work. This is typically how you would connect to an
in-flight WiFi during a flight if it is offered by the airline.

Sieghard

Fitbit Flex accessibility

2016-04-26 Thread Cristóbal
Hello list,

So I’ve been in search of some sort of vibrating alarm clock that can wake
me up in the morning to avoid disturbing my wife as I’m more the early bird
of the two whereas she is more the type who hates mornings with a white hot
intensity more powerful than the sun...

Getting a tactile bedside clock to avoid having to engage my iPhone during
the night and possibly wake her up is easy enough, but the alarm thing, not
so much.

I’ve looked around and haven’t really found anything very convincing.
They’re either inaccessible with bad reviews or more geared towards the deaf
market which entails bed shaking mechanisms. Having lived through more than
my fair share of earthquakes including being woken up from a few in the
middle of the night and currently living in earthquake country, this is an
absolutely unappealing option for me. That and I’m sure my wife would
probably strangle me in my sleep after the second or third time of it
scaring her awake.

Anyway, to make a long story short, I was contemplating getting a Fitbit
flex since in its description, a silent vibrating alarm is specifically
highlighted as one of its features.

It’s been suggested to me to also consider getting an Apple Watch. I’m
really not keen on getting an Apple Watch. Much less spending a couple
hundred bucks even for a refurbished or used one for this one specific task.
$80.00 is a more palatable option at least for this circumstance.

Does anyone have any experience with the Fitbit or any of its variations and
associated iOS apps? Is the device by itself or in conjunction with the iOS
app or even connected to a PC accessible? Specifically when accessing this
silent vibrating alarm feature?

Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Cristobal

Hi Keith,

No, I just tried it with Audible. I listened to a passage and memorized what
was being said. Then I jumped back a bit and replayed it stopping at a
particular point by pressing that button. When I checked on the iPhone it said
“Play” so it obviously had stopped and when I started playback again with that
button it continued where I had paused it.

Subject: Plantronics Voyager Edge headset

Hi List,

I just received my Plantronics Voyager Edge headset today. From all the
descriptions I expected it to be smaller, this headset is not really smaller
than my Jabra Supreme which in fact is smaller when it is folded. The main
difference is that the Supreme sits on the ear and requires a hook and the Edge
goes a bit in the ear and seems to stay in place quite securely. It also feels
quite comfortable.

Anyhow, I had asked prior to purchasing whether it is possible to play/pause
audio with this headset and I was told it is. I think Cristobal was one of the
people who answered, but I could be wrong. Anyways, I’d really appreciate if I
could be enlightened as to the secret on how to do this. I pushed every button
I could find on this when I had an Audible book playing, but it does not seem
to be possible to pause playback this way. All I can find on this headset is an
on/off slider switch, volume up and down buttons (they all sit sort of on the
edge, then there is a button on the back of the little boom arm which, when
pressed says “Say a command” and there is the main area where if you press
without anything going on the headset announces the remaining talk time, when
the phone rings this becomes the answer/hang up button and if you press and
hold for a moment it invokes SIRI.

Answering a call by saying “Answering” when the phone is ringing also seems to
work well, but this also was reliable with my Jabra Supreme and in fact
everything else from the button on the boom arm to the volume buttons and so on
is extremely similar to my old Jabra.

. I primarily invested in this relatively expensive headset because I really
like the ability to play or pause audio and I’d be quite disappointed if this
wasn’t possible especially after having people tell me it was.

Regards,

Sieghard

RE: Plantronics Voyager Edge headset

2016-04-26 Thread Cristóbal
See, now you had me second guessing myself. I totally blanked on how I was
always doing it. I crumbled under pressure...

Anyway, there you go.

I don’t use the hands free answer/hang up features or caller ID as I find them
either unreliable or unnecessary, but all that aside, I’ve found the Edge to
be the most complete single earpiece that I’ve used so far.

Be aware though, you’re going to find that sometimes, when answering a call or
making a call, the audio doesnt’ always root to the Edge. Other’s have
commented about this and have also experienced this issue with other bluetooth
earpieces so maybe it’s somethingg more to do with bluetooth earpieces and
not Edge specific. If it does happen, pressing and holding the call/hangup
button on the fat part of the Edge till you hear the quick beep will make the
call audio go through the earpiece. Annoying, but at least there’s a fix for
it.

A question, are you getting an electronic frequency hum with the backbeats
when Voiceover speaks?

I’ve been thinking of getting the backbeat pro and was curious if this humming
that I come across with other bluetooth stereo headsets is also present in
them.

Hi Keith and Merv,

OK, so I guess that is why this list exists. I tried all sorts of stuff, but I
hadn’t tried pushing and holding the voice control button on the boom arm or
maybe not long enough. Yes, Keith, it works perfectly.

It is also good to know that the earpiece senses that it is being removed, the
Plantronics Backbeat Sense stereo headset I also purchased recently does that
as well and it’s a nice feature.

Now I am quite happy with my purchase. Of course I have to dig out my old Jabra
and try pushing and holding the button on the boom arm, maybe it will also
play/pause that way and I would have used it for years not knowing about it.

I just tried it with my Edge, having never tried it before. I was able to
successfully pause and restart both music from the Music app, and an Audible

Near the top of the boom on which the mic is located is a small button. I just
held it down for about 2 to 3 seconds until I heard a beedp, and it paused or
restarted playback.

Hope this works for you, Keith

Re: Winston's response to my voice dream question about iCloud

2016-04-26 Thread Mary Otten
I will be curious to see what happens with your new folders and books. I just
downloaded a book from book share into the novels folder on my iPhone 6s. This
folder was successfully made via iCloud when I made the folder on my iPad. I
subsequently put a bunch of books into that iPad folder, the iPhone folder has
remained stubbornly empty. So I put one book from book share via direct
download onto my iPhone. It has just been sent via iCloud into the novels
folder on my iPad. I do not understand what is going on. Clearly something
isn't right, but it is complicated.

Yes, both Uverse apps are accessible. The one that is simply called UVerse

Near the top of the boom on which the mic is located is a small button. I just

Regards,

Sieghard

I was frustrated that I could only get VO to read image descriptions if I
opened the tweet and flicked to the image. Anyways, I went to settings, look

experimenting so I can't report on any long term experience nor have I tried
any of the other options for in Line photos.

Good luck and I hope someone finds this helpful.

Hi akl. When using a braille display in voice dream reader, is there a way to
not see the percentage I've read of a book at the bottom of every page I read?
Otherwise I can scroll just fine. It might show something like 4.6 percent or
something like that as an example.

Winston's response to my voice dream question about iCloud

2016-04-26 Thread Mary Otten
Hi all,
I sent Winston a note describing the issue I was having where things I add to
folders are not getting moved via iCloud from one device to another with voice
dream. He said it should be working. His only question was whether I was using
I OS 8, which I am not. So apparently I must have the system from hell. First
my folders go away. Now my iCloud sink isn't doing what it should and he does
not have any suggestions as to why , at least not yet. I hope no one else has
this problem. It is really amazingly irritating, even though I know it is what
they referred to as a "first world problem".

RE: Plantronics Voyager Edge headset

2016-04-26 Thread Kramlinger, Keith G., M.D.
Hi Sieghard,

I just tried it with my Edge, having never tried it before. I was able to
successfully pause and restart both music from the Music app, and an Audible
book.

Near the top of the boom on which the mic is located is a small button. I just
held it down for about 2 to 3 seconds until I heard a beedp, and it paused or
restarted playback.

Hope this works for you, Keith

RE: Plantronics Voyager Edge headset

2016-04-26 Thread Merv Keck
Hi,

I have an Edge and since it automatically pauses when I take the Edge out of my
ear I just sort of tilt the ear piece a little if I want to pause it and it
pauses. When I want to start it again I readjust it. Or I just take it out
altogether. I don’t know if that is the official answer but it works for me.

Hi,

I have been having an intermittent problem when using cellular data rather than
WIFI. I have an IPhone 6 runnning IOS 9.31.

Without touching the screen focus will randomly change. Sometimes a random
button or link is activated. I have cleaned the screen so that shouldn’t be a
problem.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Re: a few tweetings questions

2016-04-26 Thread Wayne Merritt
Christina,
1. I don't know, I've never heard of Ninja Mode or the media mode.
2. There have been a couple of updates to Tweetings recently relating
to image descriptions and accessibility options. If you don't have the
latest, then find it in the Updates tab of the App Store. This is a
very new feature so they will probably make more refinements to it as
we go on.
3. That could be because you have told Tweetings to not show
notifications in the notification center. Try looking in
Settings/Notification Center, and then look for Tweetings.

Good luck,
Wayne

Re: Usa today app update

2016-04-26 Thread Brian Fischler
Hey Candy,

USA Today breaks accessibility every couple of app updates. They obviously do
not care about keeping the app accessible. It is disappointing.

Hi Juan

I hope my information for your research project isn't too late.

I use camfind to identify objects and colors.

I use KNFB Reader to scan and read my mail and other printed material.

I'm new to learning braille, so my app of choice is Braille Reference.

I use Voicedream and Bard mobile to listen to books.

I use iNote to identify paper currency.

I use Wells Fargo for my banking.

I use the native mail app which comes installed on the iPhone for email.

I use tunein radio to stream local radio stations and the YouTube app for
videos.

I use Facebook app or Safari's mobile site for social media.

I have a lot of other apps that I use, the above apps are the ones I use most
often.

If you need more information or links to the above apps, feel free to contact
me.

RE: Is Apple TV A Hardware?

2016-04-26 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Kevin,

You are right, I hadn't thought about that. I guess somebody who didn't have a
TV and wanted to use a Bluetooth device all the time would have to get sighted
help to set up the Apple TV initially and connect the Bluetooth device, after
that it would probably be fine.

Hi.

There's good news and bad news regarding exclusively using a blue tooth device
with an Apple TV. The good news is you can do it, and if you want you can also
pair a blue tooth keyboard. The bad news is you'll need some way to hear
VoiceOver to set up the Apple TV, and this means using the HDMI cable connected
to something. I've had my 4 gen Apple TV since around Christmas, and it's
great!

Have a blessed day, and don't work too hard.

RE: Is Apple TV A Hardware?

2016-04-26 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Yes, you can connect any Bluetooth headset or speaker to an Apple TV just as
you can connect it to your iPhone.
You can also connect a Bluetooth keyboard to the Apple TV for entering text,
for example, if you want to log in to Youtube, Netflix or other apps which
require a user name and password and of course you can enter text via the
keyboard when you search for something.
The new Apple TV (fourth generation) which came out last November also has SIRI
and you can tell it, for example, to open an app just like on your iPhone or
you can tell it to look for movies with a particular actor etc.
Of course when it really comes down to it the Apple TV is definitely meant to
be connected to a TV and most of us blind folks still have a TV and some more
often than others we may want to watch something together with sighted friends
or family.

Sieghard

Hi Christopher,

A TV is not necessarily required for a blind person to take advantage of the
Apple TV. Firstly, I doubt there has been a multi-media receiver made in the
last 5 years or more that doesn't have multiple HDMI inputs and this includes
inexpensive $300 models. Secondly, if you really didn't care about having a TV
connected, you could simply connect a Bluetooth speaker or headset or both in
order to listen to the content you get via the Apple TV. Lastly, there are the
converters you mentioned.

Yes, a TV set is required to use the new Apple TV. On the third generation
however, it is possible to connect it to an audio system using some kind of
optical cable. Due to the lack of an optical port on the new Apple TV, this
isn’t natively supported, however you can no doubt buy some kind of converter
adaptor as a workaround.

Click on that and you'll get a page with information. There is a button for
account id cliak that and you get another screen with several options and the
one you want is view id or something similar. Click there and you'll be asked
for your apple password; Enter it the go to the next screen. This will have a
lot of info including a heading called manage subscriptions. That's where you
want to be.

Hope this helps,
Don

managing subscriptions through the App store

2016-04-26 Thread deidre muccio
Hello
I recently got notified to renew a premium podcast subscription. I was given
instructions on how to manage my subscriptions through I Tunes on my phone.
Once signed in to My Account, I saw everything but the manage subscriptions
button. I saw payment, buy, change account info, but nothing to do with
subscriptions other than e mail subscriptions. Neither did I get to a place
where I saw any of the subscriptions listed that I had paid for such as WTF
or Howl.
I was told to go through I tunes in settings which I did. I found
various pages on the Apple site for managing my info but once again nowhere
did I see how to manage my subscriptions.
I was told not to do this through the actual App which I had
downloaded on the phone. When I did that I did see a place to auto renew
once logged into my account but it could not be activated. In fact, a
sighted friend did not see the same info on the page as voice over spoke to
me.
Is it time to call Apple Accessibility, or is someone on list
familiar with this issue and figured it out enough to tel me what step or
place I am not getting to.
I am a bit confused about why a company that publishes an App for an
I phone cannot help you manage your account if you signed up for it using
your phone, as opposed to a computer. There is I Tunes then there is the
HowlApp

. I purchase my subscription to Howl via I Tunes. Why are the two not equal,
or why is customer service for that App not able to see my subscription
info?

Hi,

I have been having an intermittent problem when using cellular data rather than
WIFI. I have an IPhone 6 runnning IOS 9.31.

Without touching the screen focus will randomly change. Sometimes a random
button or link is activated. I have cleaned the screen so that shouldn’t be a
problem.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

RE: The final chapter, was: The story continues... Long lost iPhone 6S has finally resurfaced after snow melt

2016-04-26 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I doubt the snow made a difference, it’s the temperatures which for a few
nights went down close to minus 40, that means whatever is in the battery would
have been frozen absolutely rock solid and after all, these temperatures exceed
not only the recommended safe operating temperatures but also the storage
temperatures by quite a margin.

Hi,

I dropped an iPod into a bathtub once, and the battery was never the same
again, though otherwise it worked fine. So I'm not surprised that the battery
didn't survive the snow very well. I'm very glad the phone is under Apple Care
protection.

Hi Joseph,

Maybe, but I have also noticed now that the battery drains very quickly. The
phone doesn’t have an active SIM in it so it’s basically an iPod Touch and if,
for example, you put an iPhone in Airplane mode even if you turn WiFi back on,
the battery life is a lot longer. Yesterday I took the 6S off the charger at
6:30 in the morning and all I did was listen to Audible a bunch. By 8:30 PM (14
hours later) I was down to 13% and that is definitely not normal. Before I had
the iPhpone fully charged and it was just sitting on my night table with the
screen locked and when I picked it up 24 hours or a bit more later it was
actually dead and I had to plug it in again. I will definitely request that the
entire phone is replaced.

Hi everybody,

Finally, here is the long awaited last chatper of my lost iPhone story.

yesterday the package with my iPhone 6S packed in rice arrived. Externally it
looks brand new with not a scratch on it. When I took out the SIM tray it
seemed like there was maybe a bit of moisture there so I left out the SIM tray
and stuck the iPhone in my toaster oven on a really low temperature for a
couple of hours just to maybe expel a bit more moisture from inside.

After that the moment came and I plugged it in. My wife was there and we
quietly watched, but the screen remained black. After about 2 minutes there was
no change and I thought that answered the question as to whether the iPhone was
still working after having been lying on the ground outside for 115 days, first
in snow and temperatures of up to -40 Celsius/Fahrenheit and as warm as +20
Celsius (68 Fahrenheit) and of course having gone through the process when the
snow and ice around it melted and so on. It was also exposed to the sun, back
in March there was another 10 inches of new snow over the course of a week and
in the week or two before my brother found it on April 15 it had rained lightly
a few times.

Anyhow, I left it plugged in and when I came back to my office 2 hours later I
thought I check it out. I pressed the home button and bingo, Voiceover was
there and asked me to enter my passcode. I did so and the phone unlocked. There
was of course no service since I got a new SIM back in December when I lost it
and I had also just installed a new router at my store so I had to reconnect to
WiFi. As soon as I did so the phone started dinging and binging away as emails
came in, push notification alerts sounded and on top of all that it started

  Hi Fazil,

As I mentioned before, I have a 5S 64 Gb Space Grey for sale. It is unlocked
and works just fine. If you want to buy a new one you just have to check around
who still has them since they are discontinued now that the iPhone SE has been
released to take the place of the 5S. You can check with Apple Stores and of
course eBay and so on, maybe Best Buy also.

If you don’t want to buy a used 5S it may not make sense to buy a new one
considering the price of the iPhone SE which you can buy unlocked for $579
Canadian for a 16 Gb or for $709 for a 64 Gb (there is no 32 Gb).

Of course we do have 12% tax in British Columbia, so a 16 Gb would end up
costing $648.48 and a 64 Gb would be $794.08 with taxes.

I would sell my unlocked 5S 64 Gb for half that, $400 Canadian, it would ship
in the original box and I’d include an original Apple Leather case, a basic

TPU case, an Otterbox Defender and a leather holster with belt clip which is
big enough to hold the 5S in a basic case. Also an Apple wall charger and
cable, only thing I don’t have right now is an unused set of Earpods.

I would also include shipping to Vancouver in that or I can meet you and we
do this face-to-face as my wife has a medical appointment in Vancouver next
week, we’ll be there on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

  Take care,

RE: Is Apple TV A Hardware?

2016-04-26 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Christopher,

A TV is not necessarily required for a blind person to take advantage of the
Apple TV. Firstly, I doubt there has been a multi-media receiver made in the
last 5 years or more that doesn't have multiple HDMI inputs and this includes
inexpensive $300 models. Secondly, if you really didn't care about having a TV
connected, you could simply connect a Bluetooth speaker or headset or both in
order to listen to the content you get via the Apple TV. Lastly, there are the
converters you mentioned.

Sieghard

Yes, a TV set is required to use the new Apple TV. On the third generation
however, it is possible to connect it to an audio system using some kind of
optical cable. Due to the lack of an optical port on the new Apple TV, this
isn’t natively supported, however you can no doubt buy some kind of converter
adaptor as a workaround.

Hi, Eva.

If you talk to the customer service and ask them to give you a complementary
unlock, they would consider that and you might avoid this $50 charge.

Thanks!

  Take care,

  Sieghard

I strongly recommend that each of you contact customer support for InstaCart.
Last summer, the app was completely inaccessible; I contacted them with some
suggestions and their developer(s) were incredibly responsive.

Myself, I cannot use InstaCart because there isn’t any providers here in
northern Wisconsin but I contacted them on behalf of a dear friend living in

I would certainly use InstaCart if it were available here in the Twin Ports.

Hi, I also had issues with delivery times the 2 times I've used instacart, and
I also had rating issues, here is the deal with that, if you try sliding your
finger up and down then go back swiping to your left it will say things like
good then go and slide again and it will either say bad or very good or
excellent depending on which way you slide. It’s a pain but doable. I hope

I haven't yet run into the problem with selecting a delivery time, but who
knows; an update just came out. However, I had a problem rating the delivery I
had last week. That part of the app used to be accessible, too. But last week,
I couldn't get the picker to speak the number of stars. Whatever rating I gave
it made the support people write back to me to find out what went wrong, so I
explained. We'll see what the most recent update fixes or breaks.

Re: Problem with InstaCart app

2016-04-26 Thread Kathy Blackburn
I haven't yet run into the problem with selecting a delivery time, but
who knows; an update just came out. However, I had a problem rating the
delivery I had last week. That part of the app used to be accessible,
too. But last week, I couldn't get the picker to speak the number of
stars. Whatever rating I gave it made the support people write back to
me to find out what went wrong, so I explained. We'll see what the most
recent update fixes or breaks.

Re: Possible bug with Blindfold Spin and Solve.

2016-04-26 Thread Sherrie
I have written the developer and he is very helpful but it would help if
everyone wrote to him so he will know that it is really a problem.
You can write to the developer at
ma...@kidfriendlysoftware.com
I did buy the 7.99 unlimited play package but would really like these bugs to
be addressed. And squeaky wheels get the grease, so start squeaking!
I think a temporary solution for the problem of the alternate characters is to
drag your finger up above the keyboard and then back to the letters.
I also suggested in my email to the developer that when a letter is correct
that it be read out immediately in the word where it went so it will enable
one to follow the progress of the solution. This is very important especially
when an opponent is taking a turn since you can’t follow where the correct
letters are being inserted until his turn is over. If you try the two finger
swipe to hear the whole puzzle read out during an opponent’s turn it just jumps
to the end of his turn which may or may not be the end of the game.

I love this game, but no all the problems are what are happening to me. I am
going to write support, but like you I thought it was missteps of my own. Now
that someone has brought these up I will put in my wish to support that some
further work be done to the app to help the game get better.

problem I'm having is that the keyboard goes into alternative character mode

Problem with the InstaCart App

2016-04-26 Thread Richard Petty
I wonder if anyone here uses the InstaCart app and has encountered the same
problem I have?

I use InstaCart and find it generally accessible. Screens for locating and
selecting items work well. The search feature works well. In our area, there’s
a nice selection of stores: Costco (you don’t have to be a member to order
through the app), Whole Foods, Central Market, HEB (two Texas chains operated
by the same company) and Specks (a liquor and specialty retailer). The persons
who fill and deliver orders almost always do a good job and are conscientious
about calling or texting if substitutions are necessary. In some but not all
cases, prices are the same as in store prices. And, again in some cases,
delivery is free. When I’ve had to pay for delivery, which is clearly
identified in the app, I’ve never paid more than $6 plus a tip, which is set in
and paid through the app. Compare $6 to a couple hours on the bus or the cost
of a taxi and InstaCart becomes attractive.

The part of the app I find problematic is the page where the user chooses
delivery times. Date selection is not a problem; that’s a standard picker item
which works with a swipe up or down. Then the times, in increments of one hour,
are displayed as separate items. Selecting a time is very difficult. I’ve tried
double tapping the item, then moving to the bottom of the screen to move to the
next stage of ordering, but only to find that item grayed out. Usually through
some combination of tapping and moving down to the bottom of the screen, I can
finally make the app work, but it’s tedious. More than once I’ve had to call
InstaCart to ask to have an improperly chosen delivery time corrected.

I’m using IOS 9.x. This may be a standard IOS control I don’t understand or a
flaw in the app. Does anyone have insight into this issue? Thanks in advance
for your help.

Re: Is Apple TV A Hardware?

2016-04-26 Thread christopher hallsworth
Yes, a TV set is required to use the new Apple TV. On the third generation
however, it is possible to connect it to an audio system using some kind of
optical cable. Due to the lack of an optical port on the new Apple TV, this
isn’t natively supported, however you can no doubt buy some kind of converter
adaptor as a workaround.
