I can see U.T.G.T.I being another of the accessibility nightmares, again.

I have trouble enough getting the bus to read my pass.

According to the article below, Apple may be ditching face ID in order
to get rid of the notch. The article does say that you may get both for
a while, but if Apple is serious about going to a flat slab of
uninterrupted glass, and they can't figure out under the screen face ID,
then that's when you might see face ID going away to be replaced by the
under the glass touch ID.

No iPhones as small as the iPhone 8 or 8 plus.
iPhone 8 was 4.7 inches diagonal, the 8 plus, 5.5 inches.
the iPhone xr 6.1 and the new iPhone 11 is also 6.1.
The iPhone 11 Pro is 5.8 or the pro Max is 6.5
It has been rumored that next year they may come out with an SE sized phone;

The Assistive Touch button/menu is not in Settings after you turn it on it is
on your home screen and you do have to hunt for it, it is near the bottom
right, though.
Anyhow, as I said, if your phone is acting sluggish a complete shutdown and
restart should clear things up as well since it will also clear the memory.
If you still feel it is not right you can always try a hard reset.

Hi Sieghard,
I really think something is wrong with these instructions that I got from the
web! LOL! The reason why I say this is because according to these
instructions, I go to settings, general, accessibility, and turn on Assistive
Touch, and then go back to general, and tap on the shutdown button, and I do
all that just fine, but according to the instructions, it says to press and
hold the assistive touch button, but I’ve searched the entire page for the
assistive touch button under general, but it is not on that page! LOL! Either
that, or I am losing my mind! LOL! If anyone has cleared the ram on their xr
phone, please let me know how you did it. I also can’t find the on-screen
button rather I turn on the assistive touch or not. A few weeks ago, I noticed
my xr phone started acting a little sluggish, so I thought if I cleared the
ram, it might work better.
Thank you for all your help.

Janet, I wouldn’t worry about it, just turn your phone off and back on maybe
once a week and you’ll be fine.
But if you want to try this, the on-screen home button is the one which you can
find after you tap on the Assistive Touch menu, this itself is a button which
appears on the screen near the bottom right after you turn on assistive touch,
you can also find this button, tap on hold on it and drag it wherever you want
on the screen, e.g. you can drag it to the bottom in the middle so it appears
approx.. in the same spot where the old physical home button on older phones
used to be.

Hi Sieghard and All,
I am a little confused about clearing ram on my xr phone. I did several Google
searches, and I came up with the exact same results as you are showing here. I

Tap on the Assistive Touch button and then press and hold on the on-screen Home
button until your iPhone flashes and returns to the Home screen. Do they mean
the on-screen Home button is the power on and off button? Am I supposed to go

prompt to enter my passcode, it did not simply go back to the home screen.

Doing a Google search for “How to clear memory on the iPhone” resulted in a
lot of articles, many older and referring to phones with a mechanical home
button and apparently even the iPhone 7 which I believe had the first virtual
home button still works this way. Anyways, I also found an article from 2018
which explains how to do this on the iPhone 7 and older phones as well as the
iPhone 8 and iPhone X and, I assume XR/XS/XS Max.
I tried the method described in the article on my iPhone 8 and the result was
the same as pressing and holding down the virtual home button, I ended up on
the lock screen where I had to enter my passcode, Touch Id at that point did
not unlock my phone and focus did not return simply to the home screen. If
anybody wants to try this on the iPhone X/XR/XS, here is the text of the
article:

How do you clear RAM on iPhone and what does clearing RAM do? Resetting RAM on

No iPhones as small as the iPhone 8 or 8 plus.
iPhone 8 was 4.7 inches diagonal, the 8 plus, 5.5 inches.
the iPhone xr 6.1 and the new iPhone 11 is also 6.1.
The iPhone 11 Pro is 5.8 or the pro Max is 6.5
It has been rumored that next year they may come out with an SE sized phone;
but nothing official from Apple.

2019-09-10 Thread Keith Bierman
Short answer NO

iPhone 11 . 5.94"x2.98
iPhone SE 4.87x2.31

Improved battery life and the much more powerful chip (more performance at
less power) probably has more long term impact than the better cameras
(although the better camera contributes to faster facial recognition).

Folks that aren't focused on picture taking probably want to hold off on
upgrading though. I *suspect* that later iOS releases might leverage that
extra processing power for things useful in assistive modes ... but they
didn't discuss anything in that area today.

Re: In-screen Touch ID potentially signals a backward step ahead, 9 to 5 Mac

2019-09-10 Thread Christopher Chaltain
According to the article below, Apple may be ditching face ID in order
to get rid of the notch. The article does say that you may get both for
a while, but if Apple is serious about going to a flat slab of
uninterrupted glass, and they can't figure out under the screen face ID,
then that's when you might see face ID going away to be replaced by the
under the glass touch ID.

These are just guesses and conjecture at this point and in my opinion there

3D touch seems to be one of them, but I somehow doubt that Face Id is going
away considering that it is being used more and more everywhere and also
because Apple still seems to care about accessibility and there are
certainly people who can't use Touch Id because maybe they don't have hands
or arms etc.

Hey Mark,

I agree with the author of the article. I hope they don’t ax the FaceID
functions. I have found FaceID to be much more reliable then TouchID ever
was. Granted there are some minor trade offs with FaceID vs TouchID. At the
payment terminal TouchID can be a little quicker as you and I have discussed
off list. In everyday use I find the FaceID function to be much quicker and
much more friendly to use. There were many times with TouchID it simply
would not recognize my finger print and it would kick me to the keypad
anyway. This then defeated the purpose of TouchID to me… Maybe I’m the odd
man out here but I love FaceID and it’s simplicity.

Just my thoughts on the FaceID vs TouchID argument.

Hello All,

As I am one of those insane people who is waiting for Apple to

Mark.

In-screen Touch ID potentially signals a backward step ahead By Ben
Lovejoy

In-screen Touch ID could be appearing in iPhones as early as next
year, according to a new report today. But while the current report
suggests that both Touch ID and Face ID fans will be catered for, that
may not remain the case for long.

The debate between the respective fans of Touch ID and Face ID began
when Apple launched the iPhone X, the first iPhone to be launched
without the fingerprint reader since it made its debut on the iPhone 5 S
in 2013.

With the iPhone X launch, Apple seemed pretty clear that Face ID was
the future of iPhone authentication. It is, says Apple, faster,
easier, and more secure than Touch ID.
Face ID reinvented the way we unlock, log in, and pay. Some of our
most sophisticated technologies - the TrueDepth camera system, the
Secure Enclave and the Neural Engine - make it the most secure facial
authentication ever in a smart-phone. And even faster and easier to use.

Close family members aside, Apple says that Face ID is 20 times more
secure than Touch ID.
Every fingerprint is unique, so it's rare that even a small section of
two separate fingerprints are alike enough to register as a match for
Touch ID.
The probability of this happening is 1 in 50,000 with a single,
enrolled finger.

The probability that a random person in the population could look at
your iPhone or iPad Pro and unlock it using Face ID is approximately 1
in 1 million with a single enrolled appearance.

Most owners of iPhone X/XS and latest iPad Pro devices say they would
never go back. That's certainly true for me.

But while that appears to be the consensus view, it's not a universal
one.
There are owners of Face ID devices who say they find it less reliable
than Touch ID, and there are owners of Touch ID devices who claim they
won't upgrade until Touch ID is available on newer devices.

Today's report says that Apple is aiming to please all of the people
all of the time, with plans to offer both forms of biometric
authentication in future iPhones, starting in either 2020 or 2021.
In-screen Touch ID would enable Apple to bring back Touch ID without the
need for a Home button.

Apple is apparently readying a new under-display integrated Touch ID
fingerprint sensor "as early as its 2020 iPhones" next fall, according
to a report today from Bloomberg. The report says it would be an
addition to the existing Face ID authentication and unlock system,
allowing users to authenticate with either fingerprint or face
biometrics [.]

Offering both Touch ID and Face ID would increase overall convenience
and speed of unlocki

RE: clearing memory

2019-09-10 Thread janet gross

can follow most of the steps to clear xr iPhone, until I get to the last step,
Tap on the Assistive Touch button and then press and hold on the on-screen Home
button until your iPhone flashes and returns to the Home screen. Do they mean
the on-screen Home button is the power on and off button? Am I supposed to go
back to the Accessibility page to find the Assistive Touch button, and press it
and hold it? Can someone please tell me how to work with this last step?
Thank you all!

When I just tried it on my iPhone 8 I didn’t get the SIRI beep at all, after
the tap to power off prompt appeared I pushed down and held down on the virtual
home button and after maybe 8 or so seconds I got the lock screen with the
prompt to enter my passcode, it did not simply go back to the home screen.

If
anybody wants to try this on the iPhone X/XR/XS, here is the text of the
article:

Speed Up iPhone: How to Clear RAM on iPhone to Make It Faster
By Conner Carey updated on 04/10/2018

How do you clear RAM on iPhone and what does clearing RAM do? Resetting RAM on
your iPhone makes it perform faster. Memory on iPhone is about how many various
activities are going on at once. Clearing RAM allows iPhone to clear out any
processing it doesn’t need to currently do. When you clear RAM on your iPhone,
nothing on the surface changes. But you will see and feel the difference when
using your iPhone. This is one of the best ways to make your iPhone faster in
just a couple short steps. You can clear RAM on any iPhone model, including the
latest iPhone 7. Here’s how to clear RAM on iPhone to make it faster.

This is one of those tricks that rarely gets talked about, but if your phone is
feeling sluggish, clearing the RAM should help give it a boost. Clearing iPhone
RAM is like sweeping cobwebs from a closet—the information that’s cleared isn’t
needed so we reset RAM to free up usable memory on our iPhones. With less

Re: deleted folder on Dropbox

2019-09-10 Thread Vicki W.
I actually had to go a little deeper. I ended up on the computer, going so far
as to the contact us under support and there was a link to my most recent
events.

At that point, there were four links to restore all the folders and files from
that folder. Just going to the normal deleted area only showed files, not
folders. Since there were over 1100 files in this folder, that was no option
for me!

I did have to do all of this through the computer, though, in case it ever
happens to anyone else.

  Hi Vicki,

Probably the easiest thing to do is copy the folder on your computer to your
desktop or somewhere where you can find it. Once your Internet service is back
to normal, if the folder is deleted from Dropbox, copy it back.

If that doesn't work, you can restore folders through the website. The last
time I tried to restore a file, which was a few weeks ago, the process was not
completely accessible, unfortunately. But with a bit of sighted help, you
should be able to go to
  www.dropbox.com
log in if you are asked to, and restore the folder.

  Good luck,
  Anna

RE: deleted folder on Dropbox

2019-09-10 Thread Alan Lemly
Vicki,

I don't think it is possible to restore deleted files or folders using the
Dropbox app on your phone. Below are the steps I found for restoring deleted
Dropbox files when I Googled it:

1. Sign in to dropbox.com.

2. Tap on the Files in the left sidebar.

3. Click on Deleted files in the left sidebar.

4. Locate the deleted file or folder you want to recover.

Subject: deleted folder on Dropbox

I accidentally deleted a major folder in Dropbox while using my phone. I can’t
find a way to restore it on the phone.

It, at least so far, is still on my computers. I had trouble with my Cox
service today, so maybe it hasn’t shown up on the computers yet.

I have two questions.

1. How do I get it back on my phone?

2. Why would it still show up on my computers and not on the phone,?

Re: deleted folder on Dropbox

2019-09-10 Thread Anna Dresner

Good luck,
Anna

Hello everyone,
My policy on all robo calls is to ignore them. I do not listen to them at
all, I hang up and then block the caller on my iPhone.
No legitimate business or government agency uses robotic calls to contact
their customers. I always assume everything is a scam!
I also never respond to any promotional emails, and I never open any email
that has an attachment... Even if I know the sender.

I also do not respond to any door to door solicitors.

I assume everyone is a scammer, and, as a result, I hace never been scammed.
Always better to error on the side of caution.👍

In iOS 13 you can enter numbers during a call on a Bluetooth keyboard although
for some reason it seems to work only with the number row on top of the
keyboard and not with the numeric pad if you use a keyboard which has one. But
I guess it is better than nothing. If you want to dial a number on the dialpad
you can also use the number row on a Bluetooth keyboard and pressing enter will
dial the call.

As you describe, and having 2 hearing aids which don't help any in this case,

Subject: hearing numbers punched, when listening to prompts.

On my iPhone SE, for example, the other day, when I got a
call for confirmation of a medical appointment, I could
hardly hear the one and when I pressed it for the talking on
the tape, which would have started again, if I had not
punched something - same thing with pharmacy and other
situations, where a digit or digits have to be pressed,
while announcements are in progress. Is there any way I can
enhance the sound of the touch pad?

RE: hearing numbers punched, when listening to prompts.

2019-09-10 Thread Carolyn Arnold
OK, I'll try that. Someone told me to turn it off for some reason some time
back, and now I don't remember what the advantage would be.

I did finally get a headset, which worked just fine, and I wonder if it would
work as well with Bluetooth. My audiologist suggested that I just keep
Bluetooth on all the time.

Best regards,

Hi,

I would suggest audio ducking so the voicemail system will turn down when you
are trying to use VoiceOver to locate the numbers.

Hello everyone,
My policy on all robo calls is to ignore them. I do not listen to them
at all, I hang up and then block the caller on my iPhone.
No legitimate business or government agency uses robotic calls to
contact their customers. I always assume everything is a scam!
I also never respond to any promotional emails, and I never open any
email that has an attachment... Even if I know the sender.

I also do not respond to any door to door solicitors.

I assume everyone is a scammer, and, as a result, I hace never been
scammed.

Someone else had mentioned turning on audio ducking; which would help, but also
add Volume to rotor, which will allow you to control the VO volume separately
from the main volume.
Then, turn the phone volume down with the side button, and VO volume up with
the rotor to make it easier to here the numbers.

These are just guesses and conjecture at this point and in my opinion there is
little point in engaging in them until we actually find out more regarding this
in-screen or under-screen Touch Id feature and if and when it might be coming.
Sure, Apple has introduced and abandoned features before, 3D touch seems to be

Hey Mark,

I agree with the author of the article. I hope they don’t ax the FaceID
functions. I have found FaceID to be much more reliable then TouchID ever was.
Granted there are some minor trade offs with FaceID vs TouchID. At the payment
terminal TouchID can be a little quicker as you and I have discussed off list.
In everyday use I find the FaceID function to be much quicker and much more
friendly to use. There were many times with TouchID it simply would not
recognize my finger print and it would kick me to the keypad anyway. This then
defeated the purpose of TouchID to me… Maybe I’m the odd man out here but I

Someone else had mentioned turning on audio ducking; which would help, but also
add Volume to rotor, which will allow you to control the VO volume separately
from the main volume.
Then, turn the phone volume down with the side button, and VO volume up with
the rotor to make it easier to here the numbers.

Re: In-screen Touch ID potentially signals a backward step ahead, 9 to 5 Mac

2019-09-10 Thread Ed Worrell

This then
defeated the purpose of TouchID to me… Maybe I’m the odd man out here but I
love FaceID and it’s simplicity.

Just my thoughts on the FaceID vs TouchID argument.

If you read the link I posted on the feature, you'll see that your iPhone is
supposed to learn your charging habits over time. I'm just guessing here, but
based on what I read, if you only plug your phone in over night then you'll
probably still get a full charge when you plug it in in the evening, but if you
plug it in during the day then you'll just get charged up to 80% since your
phone will think it'll see a charger that evening. As with most things on your
iPhone, I would assume you could toggle it on or off, and in fact, I think I
read this feature will be off to start with and you'll need to turn it on.

I usually get a new phone, about every 3 years, and relegate, my current
handset, to a backup.

I’ve had my iPhone 8 since it’s release. and the battery still says 100 percent
capacity, with my 6s, saying 92 percent.

I'm not sure why they settled on 80%, but the Battery University article does
talk about research done by Tesla, so it may be the result of some
experimentation. There may also be some chemistry that explains this. I just
don't know.

I did find this article on Apple's battery optimization feature in IOS 13.

Note that it doesn't say anything about not charging your phone daily. It

charging.

Where did you read that? I guess you can find somebody saying this online
somewhere just as you can find many who say leaving your phone plugged in
makes no difference, once the battery is fully charged it will turn off
charging which is indicated by the “100%, On AC Power” when you look at your

Hi,
It is actually not recommended to charge overnight.
For that reason, Apple has implemented Optimized battery charging feature. This
can be found inside settings, battery, battery health. The feature can then be
changed.

RE: Audio ducking, was RE: hearing numbers punched, when listening to prompts.

2019-09-10 Thread Richard Turner
Audio Ducking lowers the volume of a program when VoiceOver is speaking.
If you are listening to music, and touch the screen, the music will dim a
little to try to make it easier to hear what VoiceOver is saying.
So, in the case of trying to hear the numbers on a keypad when accessing a
phone system like what many banks use, you have a better chance of hearing the
numbers you are touching over the recorded message from the bank.

Audio Ducking is under Settings, General, Accessibility, VoiceOver, Audio.
And, you can go into the Rotor Settings and add it to the rotor as there may be

Someone else had mentioned turning on audio ducking; which would help, but also
add Volume to rotor, which will allow you to control the VO volume separately
from the main volume.

Then, turn the phone volume down with the side button, and VO volume up with
the rotor to make it easier to here the numbers.

Re: Charging with newest 12 IOS

2019-09-10 Thread Christopher Chaltain
If you read the link I posted on the feature, you'll see that your
iPhone is supposed to learn your charging habits over time. I'm just
guessing here, but based on what I read, if you only plug your phone in
over night then you'll probably still get a full charge when you plug it
in in the evening, but if you plug it in during the day then you'll just
get charged up to 80% since your phone will think it'll see a charger
that evening. As with most things on your iPhone, I would assume you
could toggle it on or off, and in fact, I think I read this feature will
be off to start with and you'll need to turn it on.

I’ve had 4 different iPhones over the years, and charged them all over

I’m currently, using an iPhone 8, and i treat it the same, as my
previous phones.
I get about 3 years or so, without having to even think about changing
my battery, which is good enough for me.
I usually get a new phone, about every 3 years, and relegate, my
current handset, to a backup.
I’ve had my iPhone 8 since it’s release. and the battery still says
100 percent capacity, with my 6s, saying 92 percent.

I'm not sure why they settled on 80%, but the Battery University

explains this. I just don't know.

leaving your phone plugged in makes no difference, once the

Hi,

It is actually not recommended to charge overnight.

For that reason, Apple has implemented Optimized battery

This is one of the best reasons some of us still, even now, require and get a

As you describe, and having 2 hearing aids which don't help any in this case,
why I can't and don't deal with those on an iPhone.

Re: Charging with newest 12 IOS

2019-09-10 Thread Dave
I hope this feature, can be turned off.

I’ve had 4 different iPhones over the years, and charged them all over night,
without any issues.

I’m currently, using an iPhone 8, and i treat it the same, as my previous
phones.

I get about 3 years or so, without having to even think about changing my
battery, which is good enough for me.

I usually get a new phone, about every 3 years, and relegate, my current
handset, to a backup.

I’ve had my iPhone 8 since it’s release. and the battery still says 100 percent
capacity, with my 6s, saying 92 percent.

Dave.

It
sounds to me like this feature will try to help with more frequent shallow
charging.

I understand that the iPhone battery goes into AC mode after it has been
topped off. When working with lithium batteries, it’s not recommended to fully
charge them daily. Hence why Apple is creating this new optimize battery
charging feature.

Where did you read that? I guess you can find somebody saying this
online somewhere just as you can find many who say leaving your phone plugged
in makes no difference, once the battery is fully charged it will turn off
charging which is indicated by the “100%, On AC Power” when you look at your
battery indicator.

Hi,

It is actually not recommended to charge overnight.

For that reason, Apple has implemented Optimized battery charging
feature. This can be found inside settings, battery, battery health. The
feature can then be changed.

Did they introduce the new smart charging with the latest IOS update?
Last night I put my IPhone X on the charging pad as always. However, it only
charged to 80% and stopped. I returned it to the pad but it never went to 100%.

I don’t understand why this feature would be advantageous since I have
heard over and over that it is not possible to over-charge your IPhone.

Marie
