RE: Contacts Entries Appearing Twice

2023-01-14 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Bill,

Interesting that you should post about this, today.

Earlier today, a friend called me with the same question.

Until earlier today, I had not heard of this occurring.

She is using an 8 Plus with iOS 14.x.

Again, an interesting coincidence, to be sure.

Re: Apple Quietly Launches a Selection of Audiobooks Voiced by an AI Robot, Mac Daily News

2023-01-14 Thread Devin Prater
AI still has the issues of normal speech synthesis. I was listening to the
sample of one, and it couldn't tell the difference between the present and
past tense of the word "read." They'll still have pronunciation issues, and
I would never want it to read a Brandon Sanderson book.

Just imagine:

“Szeth-son-son-Vallano, Truthless of Shinovar, wore white on the day he was
to kill a king"

Yeah no. Alex on the iPhone already has trouble reading some names in harry
Potter books and fanfics, like the French school members in the fourth
book, like someone who was iconic to the book as Fleur Delacour. And this
isn't just on Apple, every TTS voice is going to have problems and I hope
Apple lets all authors know that.

RE: Apple Quietly Launches a Selection of Audiobooks Voiced by an AI Robot, Mac Daily News

2023-01-14 Thread Alan Lemly
I will welcome AI narrated books especially in the nonfiction arena where voice
acting isn't relevant. And I expect I'd prefer a well done AI narrated
fictional work as opposed to a poorly done human narrated one. Like so much in
a system where profits determine the allocation of resources, I hope a good
balance can be reached so funds remain available to compensate those making
their living doing voice narration. Because you're never going to convince me
that AI will ever be able to replicate well done human voice acting.

I don't know, it wasn't all that long ago that we couldn't have imagined AI
narrated books at all.

Things are moving fast, so I wouldn't be too quick to conclude that AI narrated
books could never be of the same quality as human narrated ones.

And I don't see why we couldn't have both AI and human narrated books.

It seems very likely that there are a lot more books out there than there are
human narrators to narrate them. So AI narrated books may well be a big boost
to making more books accessible than otherwise would be the case.

I find the main cause right now when Siri misunderstands me is when I
speak to quickly. I know the current Siri tone is harder to hear for
people with hearing loss so hopefully Apple will hear these people and
change it again or even introduce haptic feedback like when you press and

Re: Recently created Apple Music play lists don’t show up on my iPad mini

2023-01-14 Thread Mary Otten
My problems have not been as serious as yours, Janet. And Siri seems to be
doing so much better on the iPad than on my phone. Although I just now asked it
to launch music, and instead of doing that, it started playing the book I was
reading last night with voice dream reader. I understand how the double magic
tap thing can get confused and play the wrong thing sometimes. But why Siri
thought I wanted to hear a book when I told it to launch the music app is quite
beyond me. Quality control not. The other annoying thing is the unwanted an
inappropriate insertion of punctuation when you’re dictating. For instance, in
this message, it decided to insert a comma between voice and dream for voice
dream reader. I did not pause. It had no reason to do that. There must be a
setting somewhere that I need to find to shut that stupid thing off. maybe this
will help some people, but I’ve been doing dictation for a long time, and I
know how to pause. So, I hope there’s a toggle that I just need to find.

RE: Recently created Apple Music play lists don’t show up on my iPad mini

2023-01-14 Thread janet gross
Mary,
I've never had this problem with either of my phones, until I upgraded to this
16.2. I regret ever upgrading to 16.2! I've never had so many problems with
either of my phones until I upgraded to 16.2. I have a very serious problem
with my Apple Play lists as well, I disconnected all my Bluetooth devices from
the phone, and had to reconnect them again. I can't even get Siri to set my
alarm clock. This is nuts! I upgraded to 16.2, and I had to erase my entire
phone, I had to rename the phone, I lost all my phone calls in my recent folder
in the phone app. I don't know what else to do. I was seriously considering
buying the new iPhone 14, but I quickly changed my mine. I can't raise or
lower the volume on the phone, so when I am talking on the phone, people keep
saying they can't hear me, and there isn't anything I can do about that either!

Hi Janet,
It’s very interesting about that tone. It seems to me that because I can hear
it sometimes and not other times, there might be something going on with audio
ducking. It seems to me like voice over having been speaking, just as I pressed
the side button to invoke Siri is somehow responsible for not hearing the tone.
Therefore, I am wondering about that audio ducking. The problem does not ever

Well, there's probably also nothing like a human voice reading a book badly.

Now I'm not dissing Learning Ally. I have used them quite a bit and
learned a lot from the books I've gotten from them over many years.
However, those of you who have used them very much at all will know that
while some of their narrations are very good, and some are passable,
some are downright terrible.

I would take AI narration over bad human narration any time.

Hello Everyone,

I was Fascinated by this article so quickly went to Apple Books and
explored the selection.

I must say, I am amazed at the quality of the AI Rendering of the text.

While there are several free AI voiced audio books from which to
choose, I purchased a title called "WildWood" by Elinor Florence.

I will be posting a second article on this in a little while.

Enjoy,

Apple quietly launches a selection of audiobooks voiced by an AI
robot MacDailyNews - Friday, January 6, 2023 at 2:36 PM Apple
quietly launches a selection of audiobooks voiced by an AI robot
Apple has quietly launched a catalog of books narrated by an AI
robot using artificial intelligence and voice synthesis
technologies it developed.

By Leyland Cecco, for The Guardian:

The popularity of the audiobook market has exploded in recent
years, with technology companies scrambling to gain a foothold.
Sales last year jumped 25%, bringing in more than $1.5bn. Industry
insiders believe the global market could be worth more than $35bn
by 2030.
On the company's Books app, searching for "AI narration" reveals
the catalogue of works included in the scheme, which are described
as being "narrated by digital voice based on a human narrator".

Apple's development of AI to narrate books could represent a
significant shift in how major technology companies see the future
of audiobooks.
Publishers, authors and literary agents who spoke to the Guardian
said the strategy, if successful, could have significant
implications for the market.

MacDailyNews Take: At first listen, it doesn't sound awful. A
preview can be heard via Apple Books here.

Hi Mark,
Well, I have been trying to do that, wait and wait some more and then make my
request. Sometimes it seems to help. Other times it’s crazy. Siri is just not
very reliable. In terms of launching apps. It will tell me that I don’t have a
certain nap, maybe twice in a row before finally launching the app. I don’t
know what they’ve done. Maybe it’s processing the request on the device instead
of in the cloud. That would certainly make up for some thing maybe, because
this phone is a 10 R, which is not exactly new. Whatever it is, it’s annoying.

Hello Sieghard,
I have excellent hearing, and this Siri I can not hear the musical tone like I
did before I upgraded to 16.2! I don't know when to ask her a question or not.
As far as I am concerned Siri was broke with 16.2!

I find the main cause right now when Siri misunderstands me is when I speak to
quickly. I know the current Siri tone is harder to hear for people with hearing
loss so hopefully Apple will hear these people and change it again or even
introduce haptic feedback like when you press and hold the digital crown on the
Apple watch, but it definitely works much better if you give it that 1 1000
count after the tone.

Hi,

Could people who have iOS 16.2 or earlier check if they can still successfully ask Siri to restart or shut down their device?
I am on iOS 16.3 public beta and this seems to have stopped working which is too bad because it was a handy command.

Re: Apple Quietly Launches a Selection of Audiobooks Voiced by an AI Robot, Mac Daily News

2023-01-14 Thread Evan Reese
I get the feeling that some people here are comparing AI narrated books
to those professionally narrated by the best in the business, as from
Audible.

But that is the wrong comparison.

Firstly, for those reading nonfiction, you don't need a professional
dramatic performance of a book.

Also, there are tons of magazines out there that could be AI narrated
but that aren't because there are not enough human narrators, or the
funds, to do the job.

If it comes down to material being accessible via AI narration, or not
accessible at all, I think many people will overcome their prejudices
and listen to them.

Also, AI narration is a fast moving technology. As I said, it would be
unwise to claim that it could never be as good as the best human
narration. But even if it never does get that good, there are still a
lot of areas where it would be very useful in filling an accessibility void.

In the context of audio books I am also a huge fan of human narration and I for
one wouldn't listen to an e-Book read by a synthesized voice if you paid me.
As for books read by AI I can't say, guess in a way it's still a synthesized
voice, but if it is really that good I might listen to it although my guess is
that I would still prefer a good human narrator. Of course sometimes you also
get not very good narrators especially with books from the public domain, so
here a really good AI maybe will do a better job.

I listened to the preview link in the article and the narration is surprisingly
good. But I completely agree, nothing could ever be better than human
narration for me. And its totally wrong for companies to try to replace people
with robots just for profet. Its disgusting.

I don't know, it wasn't all that long ago that we couldn't have imagined
AI narrated books at all.

Things are moving fast, so I wouldn't be too quick to conclude that AI
narrated books could never be of the same quality as human narrated ones.

And I don't see why we couldn't have both AI and human narrated books.

It seems very likely that there are a lot more books out there than
there are human narrators to narrate them. So AI narrated books may well
be a big boost to making more books accessible than otherwise would be
the case.

Exactly, obviously if the phone is completely powered off you can't use Siri.
Instead press the side button for about 4 or so seconds.

I think what is meant by restarting the iPhone is it’s done while the phone is

Hi,

Could people who have iOS 16.2 or earlier check if they can still successfully
ask Siri to restart or shut down their device?
I am on iOS 16.3 public beta and this seems to have stopped working which is
too bad because it was a handy command.

The subject line pretty much says it all. I have recently created a couple of
playlists on my iPhone XR. They show up there. They show up on my old iPhone 7
Plus. And they play just fine on my Amazon eight devices because they’re linked
to Apple Music and I can say play my playlist, XYZ and it works. On my iPad
mini six, these playlists are not there. Why the heck not? I just don’t
understand what the heck is going on with Apple.
Between the totally erratic behavior of Siri, half of the time, claiming it
doesn’t have an app I want to launch, which I actually have, and the fact that
when I say something like launch music, it starts playing some thing I don’t
want rather than launching the Music app, I really think iOS 16 is loaded with
bugs that need to be stumped and I don’t get it. Come on Apple. We pay big
bucks for these phones and iPads. Clean it up!

RE: Recently created Apple Music play lists don’t show up on my iPad mini

2023-01-14 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I find the main cause right now when Siri misunderstands me is when I speak to
quickly. I know the current Siri tone is harder to hear for people with hearing
loss so hopefully Apple will hear these people and change it again or even
introduce haptic feedback like when you press and hold the digital crown on the
Apple watch, but it definitely works much better if you give it that 1 1000
count after the tone.

Hi Mark,
Well, I have been trying to do that, wait and wait some more and then make my

I am afraid it may come down to supply and demand, if people are willing to pay
the extra cost it shouldn't be a problem, but look at the clothing industry,
you get all this super cheap "fast fashion" which is incredible harmful for the
planet yet people buy it by the truck load, it goes in the closet and with any
luck the stuff may get worn once or twice before it gets tossed in the garbage.
The problem of course is that even expensive clothing is made in the same
countries and while of course better materials are being used, one still
wonders how much you pay for the fact it has a certain name or logo on it.
Couldn't clothing of the same quality and fit be made in the US or Canada and
be sold for the same price? I am quite sure it could, but then somebody would
have to pay $150 for a pair of jeans which doesn't say Hugo Boss or Lewis or
whatever on it and then we have a problem.

Apple quietly launches a selection of audiobooks voiced by an AI robot
MacDailyNews - Friday, January 6, 2023 at 2:36 PM Apple quietly launches a
selection of audiobooks voiced by an AI robot Apple has quietly launched a
catalog of books narrated by an AI robot using artificial intelligence and
voice synthesis technologies it developed.
By Leyland Cecco, for The Guardian:

The popularity of the audiobook market has exploded in recent years, with
technology companies scrambling to gain a foothold. Sales last year jumped 25%,
bringing in more than $1.5bn. Industry insiders believe the global market could
be worth more than $35bn by 2030.
On the company's Books app, searching for "AI narration" reveals the catalogue
of works included in the scheme, which are described as being "narrated by
digital voice based on a human narrator".

Apple's development of AI to narrate books could represent a significant shift
in how major technology companies see the future of audiobooks.
Publishers, authors and literary agents who spoke to the Guardian said the
strategy, if successful, could have significant implications for the market.

MacDailyNews Take: At first listen, it doesn't sound awful. A preview can be
heard via Apple Books here.

There are many examples where robots or robotic processes can do things much
faster and more accurately than humans and in principle there is nothing wrong
with utilizing technology we developed to improve the manufacturing process or
even health care.

Interestingly, the article did not mention the battery on the iPhone SE
second and third generation. I recently upgraded from the iPhone 10R to the
Iphone SE third generation. It has the same processor as the Iphone 13, I
definitely think this phone fits better in the pocket, it looks exactly like
the Iphone 8, one common thing that is mentioned in reviews of this phone is
the shorter battery life and I agree with that, the battery definitely goes
faster than it did in my 10R. Fortunately there is a great solution for
that, Mophie still makes a juice pack battery case for this phone and it
doubles the battery life so I have the best of both worlds, a nice pocket
form factor and great battery life, for anyone looking to upgrade their
Iphone, I would give the Iphone SE some consideration, I love mine.

iPhone battery capacities compared: all iPhones battery life in mAh and Wh

Here we list and explain the battery capacities of every iPhone from 2007’s
original iPhone to the very latest iPhone 14 series.
Measuring iPhone battery life in straight hours of real-world usage (as
Apple likes to do) is not an accurate metric for comparison purposes as so
many use and environmental factors play a part.
We can, however, rely on straight technical specifications to tell us the
battery capacities of each iPhone.

Apple is notoriously secretive about these battery specifications, mainly
because smartphones from rivals such as Samsung boast much larger battery
capacities.
These are measured in either Milliamp Hours (mAh) or Watt Hours (Wh).
Milliamp hours are a measure of electrical charge, while a watt-hour is
equal to one watt of energy consumed for one hour of time. And it is
energy

consumed that matters when we’re measuring actual battery life.

Wh is a more accurate and consistent way to compare the total amount of
energy that similar types of batteries can store.
And it’s all about the battery voltage, which mAh ignores, which
determines

the wattage (power) of a battery.

If the mAh is the same, the higher the voltage, the greater the actual
stored power.
Volts (V) are a measure of electric pressure. Amps (A) are a measure of
current. Multiply V x A and you get Watts (W) that are a measure of power.
So V × A = W.
You can convert watt hours (Wh) to milliamp hours (mAh) using this
formula:

(Wh x 1,000) divided by V = mAh.

The lithium batteries that power most portable electronics have a voltage
of

about 3.6V, but some external battery packs (such as Apple’s 7.62V MagSafe
Battery Pack) boast a higher voltage, which means they actually carry more
power than their mAh implies.

Here we list the battery capacity of every iPhone ever released in both
mAh

and Wh.
iPhone battery capacities
iPhone: 1400mAh

Re: Recently created Apple Music play lists don’t show up on my iPad mini

2023-01-14 Thread Mary Otten
Hi Mark,
Well, I have been trying to do that, wait and wait some more and then make my

RE: Siri command to reboot or shut down iPhone

Hi All,

Just remember Sieghard is an old goat now at 55 and has a hard time remembering
how to have Siri restart his iPhone. You know it’s just operator error.

Exactly, obviously if the phone is completely powered off you can't use Siri.
Instead press the side button for about 4 or so seconds.

Hi.

I think what is meant by restarting the iPhone is it’s done while the phone is
still on. I think it’s known as a soft reboot.

If anyone knows something different, chime in.

How do you get Siri to restart your phone after it has been turned off or

Hi,

Could people who have iOS 16.2 or earlier check if they can still successfully
ask Siri to restart or shut down their device?

I am on iOS 16.3 public beta and this seems to have stopped working which is
too bad because it was a handy command.

No, it is not on BARD, which is why I didn't mention BARD as a resource.
If your local public library does digital audio books, you may be able to get
it that way.

I just finished the book, You're Not Listening for our book club," and
would recommend it to everyone who wants to be a better listener, but I'm
passing on a quote that addresses the issue brought up on this list about being
without your phone for a period of time. This is only one tiny excerpt from
the book.

From the book, "You're Not Listening: What You Are Missing and Why It
Matters," by Kate Murphy. (Available from Bookshare, and Kindle as text;
Libro.fm and Audible as an audio book.
Chapter 14. Addicted to Distraction, 57.5%:
“health experts say device dependency has many of the same behavioral,
psychological, and neurobiological components as substance abuse.
While our smartphones may not allow us to have a decent conversation
(“Can you hear me now? How about now?”), they seem to offer us just about
everything else—social media, games, news, maps, recipes, videos, music,
movies, podcasts, shopping, and pornography, if you’re so inclined. In the end,
none of it is as emotionally satisfying or as essential to our well-being as
connecting with a live human being. And yet, like any addict, we keep tapping,
scrolling, and swiping as if pulling a lever on a slot machine, hoping to
eventually hit the jackpot.
This compulsion, driven by a fear of missing out, prevents sustained
attention, making listening—or any task requiring thought—difficult. It’s hard
to concentrate on what’s happening in the real world when you’re preoccupied
with what could be happening in the virtual one. Experts have raised concerns
that we are even losing our ability to daydream, as fantasizing, too, requires
some level of attention. Many of the greatest advances in science and arts and
letters have come by way of daydreaming. Albert Einstein, Alexander Graham
Bell, Charles Darwin, Friedrich Nietzsche, T. S. Eliot, and Lewis Carroll all
attributed their genius to long periods of uninterrupted musing. Could you put
away your phone for an hour? A half hour? Five minutes?”

Now I'm definitely curious about Apple Watch batteries. I wonder if they will
come out with an article comparing watch batteries from the first series to the

2023-01-14 Thread Mike Arrigo
Interestingly, the article did not mention the battery on the iPhone SE second
and third generation. I recently upgraded from the iPhone 10R to the Iphone SE
third generation. It has the same processor as the Iphone 13, I definitely
think this phone fits better in the pocket, it looks exactly like the Iphone 8,
one common thing that is mentioned in reviews of this phone is the shorter
battery life and I agree with that, the battery definitely goes faster than it
did in my 10R. Fortunately there is a great solution for that, Mophie still
makes a juice pack battery case for this phone and it doubles the battery life
so I have the best of both worlds, a nice pocket form factor and great battery
life, for anyone looking to upgrade their Iphone, I would give the Iphone SE
some consideration, I love mine.

>
And it is energy
> consumed that matters when we’re measuring actual battery life.
>
> Wh is a more accurate and consistent way to compare the total amount of
> energy that similar types of batteries can store.
> And it’s all about the battery voltage, which mAh ignores, which determines
> the wattage (power) of a battery.
>
> If the mAh is the same, the higher the voltage, the greater the actual
> stored power.
> Volts (V) are a measure of electric pressure. Amps (A) are a measure of
> current. Multiply V x A and you get Watts (W) that are a measure of power.
> So V × A = W.
> You can convert watt hours (Wh) to milliamp hours (mAh) using this formula:
> (Wh x 1,000) divided by V = mAh.
>
> The lithium batteries that power most portable electronics have a voltage of
> about 3.6V, but some external battery packs (such as Apple’s 7.62V MagSafe
> Battery Pack) boast a higher voltage, which means they actually carry more
> power than their mAh implies.
