App for reading txt and pdf files

2018-04-13 Thread Alexandra
Hi,

which app do you use for reading your own texts? I'm looking for an app that
allows me to read my own txt and pdf files stored in dropbox conviniently.
Voice dream reader wouldn't be my first choice, as I find it rather overloaded
with features and don't like the way menues are presented. Any help is
appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Re: App for reading txt and pdf files

2018-04-15 Thread Alexandra
I forgot to mention that I also need to edit texts which didn's stored in
dropbox which didn't work when I tried it last time. Another thing is that when
you read a file with the dropbox app the whole file is read in one row and you
can't navigate. This is okay for short texts but not for longer texts like
books.

Apple watch: Show burned calories instead of percentages

2021-10-06 Thread Alexandra
Hello,

I re-configured my Apple watch, and now only percent numbers of moving,
training and standing are shown. How can I make the watch show real numbers,
meaning burned calories, training minutes and standing hours instead? Thanks
for your help.

Alexandra

App that pays you for walking

2021-10-20 Thread Alexandra
Hi,

I recently discovered Stepler, an app that kind of pays you for doing steps.
For every 1000 steps you do, you will earn one point. You can get up to 20
points for doing up to 2 steps a day. It's also possible to earn bonus
points for doing 5000, 1 and 15000 steps a day. When you have a certain
amount of points, you can exchange them into coupons for amazon and other
online shops. The app is totally free. Steps are counted by wearing an Apple
watch or by carrying your iPhone around. In order to receive bonus points,
you have to allow stepler to access the number of steps from Apple health. I
will now send you a link that you can open with your iPhone to download the
app. By using this link, you will earn ten bonus points. Happy walking!

The developer's name is Stepler app, but it could be possible that this app is
not available in the US app store. Anyway, to get those bonus points, you
should install the app directly from the link I sended.

I obviously hope they will be well, but as long as they are hopefully
vaccinated I doubt it will be very serious. My wife and I both were sick for a
few days with very mild flu symptoms at the beginning of July and while we
didn't test, my niece who we were around and who is a nurse also had similar
symptoms and she did test positive so I assume we also had it.

The fact is that by now a very large percentage of the population has had
COVID-19 as the Omicron variant (especially the latest variations) are much
more contagious, but fortunately most people also don't get nearly as sick as
they did in the first year with the Alpha and later Delta variants.

Best regards,

Sieghard

AW: Bose earphones,, was about Aftershokz

2021-01-11 Thread Alexandra
I have the Bose frames alto and absolutely like their sound. I wouldn't
recommend them though, as the glasses don't fit very well and look very
cheapish. Battery life could be better as well. So I guess the frames tempo
will be a choice for me one day.

I’ve pasted the previous thread below, but as the conversation has moved over
to talking about Bose, started a new thread.

The Bose site says the Tempos get 8 hours of active use.

I was originally very interested in the Bose Tempos but held back due to fear
that they just wouldn't last a whole day of normal every day use like making
and receiving several phone calls, occasional streaming, and frequent Siri
usage. I don't mind recharging every night but running out of battery during
the day would be a deal breaker for me. I wear sun glasses every day for
several hours a day.

What has been your experience in terms of battery life? I'd be interested in
anyone else's experience regarding the Bose Tempo Frames.

Textify: Transfers audio messages into text

2021-01-25 Thread Alexandra
Hi,

did anyone ever try the app textify? It translates audio messages from
WhatsApp, Signal and other messaging services into text and is able to do
this in various languages, such as English, Spanish, French, German etc. The
app is currently on offer for half its price. I wonder if it's accessible
with VoiceOver.

tThanks for any advice,
Alexandra

AW: App to track movies you have seen

perfectly accessible with VoiceOver and worth its price.

I keep track of the books I've read in a file as well, but I suppose for books
someone could check out the Good Reads app. I haven't taken a look at it myself
though. I have sent in some feedback to the BARD team so that you could use
BARD Express or the web page to keep track of the books you've read and not
just the books you've downloaded, but although they've been receptive to my
suggestions, I'm not sure they're getting enough feedback to make it worth
their while.

For movies, I've got nothing except for the same idea of using a file or spread
sheet. It's not as important to me to keep track of the movies I've watched
since the big reason I keep track of the books I've read is to keep track of
where I am in a series of books.

AW: iPhone sanitizer

2020-12-01 Thread Alexandra
I use one from an unknown company that works quite well. You put in your phone,
start the cleaning process by pressing a button which beeps. After five
minutes, you get a short sequence of three beeps to tell you the cleaning is
over. This is a great, accessible mainstream gadget.

Funny you should ask. I've not used them, but in the November issue of Access
World, the following was mentioned.Talking smartphone sanitizer

What do all of us touch thousands of times every day? Our smartphones or
tablets or other mobile devices. In response to this fact, devices employing
ultraviolet rays to disinfect phones and other small object grew quickly in
popularity with the pandemic.

Two unique models available from Mystic Access offer voice prompts to tell you
when the disinfecting process has begun and when it is complete. One model
offers aromatherapy as well, and both can accommodate other small items – think
cash, keys, credit cards, or other tiny items you touch all the time. Choose
between a five minute version with aromatherapy or fifteen minute version with
wireless charging capabilities. $65 from Mystic Access, www.mysticaccess.com or

Are there alternatives to the Staples ones that maybe talk or give

AW: Apple accessibility doesn’t answer questions

2020-09-30 Thread Alexandra
This is Apple's typical standardized answer to everything you send to the
accessibility email address. But sometimes, they really seem to forward
feedback and bugs will be fixed. I guess they will get a whole bunch of
messages from all over the world and can't deal with every email in detail.
Besides, they aren't making decisions by themselves.

Interesting

A question becoming feedback,

I'm not sure how that really works.
Other than a we have no idea and therefore will pass it back to someone else
that has no idea.

I sent a question to Apple accessibility a couple of days ago, inquiring
whether they knew if any of the workouts to be featured in the new Apple
fitness service will be audio described. I got a form letter that said thank
you for your feedback. We have passed it on to the appropriate department. that
tells me they didn’t even read it. I didn’t have feedback. I had a question, a
specific one. So at the very least, the reply should’ve said something about I
don’t know, but we will check into it and get back to you. But passing it along
to the appropriate department? That tells me exactly nothing except that
they’ve actually didn’t read my question. I wonder how common this is for them.

App to track booky you read

2020-02-19 Thread Alexandra
Hello,

I'm looking for an app for iOS that allows me to track books I heither have
read or want to read in the future. I tried the free sofa downtime app and
was able to add a book I completed. Unfortunately, I couldn't find it
afterwards in the app. It was only visible when I exported my books as a CSV
file. So do you know how to make these read books visible inside the app as
well? Otherwise, I'd be happy about any alternative recommendation.

Thanks in advance.

AW: App to track books you read

2020-02-19 Thread Alexandra
Thanks for the recommendation, but this is a bit over the top for my use case.
It looks like this is kind of a reading community where you have to create an
account in advance. I don't need any ecommendations, just the tracking feature.
One thing I don't like about this app is the fact that when you enter a book
and mark it as read, you can re-enter the same book and mark it as unread. This
doesn't help when you need to track a large number of books.

Charity game

2012-09-19 Thread Alexandra - Keinohrhasenfan
Hi,

is there a game for the iPhone that can be used for both entertainment and
charity purposes? There's the free rice game at www.freerice.org , a simple
quiz game that can be played online. Whenever you answer a question
correctly, 10 grains of rice will be given from sponsors to the UN's world
food program. There used to be an iPhone app called MobileRice, but
unfortunately, it was abandoned from the app store. Do you know something
similar?
The hunger site (www.thehungersite.com) used to have an app as well, but
this is said to be relaunched.

Best wishes and thanks for your input,

Alexand

iPhone very quiet after update to iOS 6

2012-09-23 Thread Alexandra - Keinohrhasenfan
Hello,

since updating to iOS 6, I have a strange volume problem. Prior to the
update, I set up the phone in a way that the signal sounds very
significantly louder than voiceover so that I wouldn't miss an incomming
message or something. Now, everything seems to be very quiet. When turned to
100 percent ,voiceover speaks like 50 percent before. And the signal sounds
are so quiet that I don't think an alarm clock would wake me up at all. All
in all, it seems that the volume has dropped in general. I turned on and off
the sounds in general without success. Shutting down and re-booting the
phone didn't help either. I also made sure that the option that allows you
to change the volume with the appropriate keys was turned on. I also pressed
the volume key as long as the sound wouldn't get louder. Did anyone else
face this problem? And what can I do to get back ma usable degree of volume?
Thanks!

Best,

Alexandra

Voiceover and background noises

2012-09-23 Thread Alexandra - Keinohrhasenfan
Hello,

since updating to iOS 6, I have the impression that voiceover can't deal
with background noises as well as it used to do. For example, I have baby
adopter installed and was amazed by the fact that the volume of the
background music was automatically adjusted to voiceover's volume. When
voiceover was speaking, the volume was turned down a bit and the other way
round. On iOS 6, this seems to be messed up completely. When touching the
screen, the music and other sounds of the app are paused for a moment. It
all seems to run much less smoothly than before. Another thing I noticed was
the strange sound when sending a message with WhatsApp. This sound was very
distinct and clear before, but now it sounds as if it is muffled somehow.
Another thing I noticed is the fact that the sound you hear when starting
and finishing dictation is very quiet. The old sounds with the adjusted
volume just sounded much more natural. To cut it short: As long as you are
working with voiceover and with no background noises, everything sounds
fine. The misbalance only starts when voiceover and other sounds come
together. Do you face the same issue? Or do you know how you can get kind of
an acoustic balance between speech output and other sounds?

Best regards,

Alexandra

Hi Alexandra,

Does the volume only seem lower when it's on external speaker or also when
you use a headset? Try this and maybe plug your headset in and unplug it a
couple of times. If that doesn't help you could try a hard reset (hold down
the Home Key and Power Button at the same time and count to 12 or so). This
should reboot the phone, it may take some time to come back on, if it
doesn't after about 2 minutes give the Power Button a single firm press to
turn the phone back on and wait another 30 or 40 seconds (boot time depends
on whether you have an iPhone 4S or a 4).

Sieghard

Google released their own app earlier this week, before iOS 6 came out.
Just search for YouTube in the app store and look for the one that says it
is by Google and is free.

Hello,

did anyone already find an alternative to the standard youtube app that was
removed in iOS 6? I installed PlayTube, but at first glance can't find a way
to log into my youtube account. Comments appreciated. Thanks!

I have noticed since updating to IOS 6, when I read a feed and tap the

back to the last highlighted article, but am taken to the top of the screen.

Has anyone found a fix for this? Maybe some adjustment I need to make?

All thanks!

Try double tapping on Charts, then you can find the free apps that are in
the top 100. That is the only place I've found the list like we used to
have where you could pick top paid, grossing or free.

WhatsApp not playing audio messages through speaker

2012-09-25 Thread Alexandra - Keinohrhasenfan
Hello,

I'm using whatsapp on an iPhone 4S with iOS 5. Before the update, I
was able to play audio messages that were sent to me through the
iPhone's speaker. After the update to iOS 6, this doesn't work
anymore. The messages are only played through the headset; this is
especially inconvenient as siri is sometimes turned od accidently when
lifting the phone to your ear, so you can't listen to the audio message
properly.

I tried re-installing whatsapp and re-booted the phone, but this
behavior still remains. Is there anything I could do to play audio
through the speaker again?

Thanks in advance,

Alexandra

If you use the rotor to navigate the charts and category pages by
Heading, you will find that Paid, Free and Top Grossing lists are still
there. If you simply flick right to browse the page, you have to go
through all 100 apps in the Paid list before you reach the list of free
apps, and then another 100 flicks to get to the Top Grossing ones.

Hope this help.

Re: What happened to the speaker volume control

Another issue is the fact that, when listening to an audio message sent on

a whatapp video.

Yes, same here. I guess Ricardo must have the only 4S or maybe one of the
very few 4S phones which don't have that problem. I did a full factory
restore a couple of days after I installed iOS 6 and it fixed the problem I
had with the playback controls not showing up in the lock screen
consistently. It also seems to have greatly improved the custom labeling
problem, at least it appears to have done so since I was able to label 3
weirdly labeled buttons in the Sonos app which before I was not able to
change. As far as the Voiceover volume during a call bug I still have it.
It maybe that it is slightly better, I can hear Voiceover relatively well in
a quiet environment, at least so that it's useable. But I still can't turn
down the call volume very much, just to a point and putting VO volume to
100% using the rotor does not make it as loud as in iOS 5 where balancing
the 2 volumes was easy to do. I have definitely reported this to Apple,
let's hope the first iOS 6 update will address a few of the more annoying
issues.

Sieghard

Re: Using the Australian voice as default

I already wrote to accessibil...@apple.com to ask for a feature that would

The language rotor doesn't control whether you have the compact voice or the
hq voice. You can only have one hq voice on your phone at a time, and when
you change the default voice in Settings > General > International > format
region, it takes a while for the new hq voice to download and replace the
former one. Whether your voice is compact or hq is controlled by the compact
voice control in the voiceover settings in Settings > General >
accessibility > voiceover. Toggling this to compact voice off will change
the default voice to hq if it has been downloaded; otherwise you would just
keep hearing the compact one. This toggle has absolutely no effect on any
voice but the default one and all voices except the default one ( the one
you set in format region) will always be compact.

2012-11-09 Thread Alexandra - Keinohrhasenfan
Hello,

having seen the app birdclock on the applevis directory, I thought it
was somehow usable with VoiceOver ,but it's actually not. As soon as
you open the app, you can hear birds and water - nothing else. You
can't change any settings at all, nor is it possible to read anything.
It doesn't tell you the time either. And when I wanted to contact the
developers, I found out that the website was written in a language
that can't even be read by jaws. Clicking on a link called "English"
didn't change anything at all. Do you have a recommendation what I
could try to make this work? And if not: What's the exact process of
returning an app? If all this isn't possible, I guess I will write an
appropriate review.

Regards,

Alexandra

Birdclock

2012-11-09 Thread Alexandra - Keinohrhasenfan
Hello Scott,

thanks for your reply. Yes, the next time, I will definitely read the
complete review before buying an app. The beginning only consisted of the
text that you can find on the app store, which made me think this could be
accessible. I wrote to iTunes and asked for a refund but am not sure if this
will work. Anyway, an issue that really bothers me is the fact that you
can't write to the developer unless you speak his / her language. This was
actually the first time I've seen a developer's website written in a
language different from English.

Best regards,

Alexandra

Twitter app recommendation

2014-10-04 Thread Alexandra - Keinohrhasenfan
Does anyone know of an accessible twitter client for iOS (7 and 8) that
supports autoloading new tweets? I actually can check my timeline only
several times a week but am following a whole bunch of people that really
interest me, so I don't want to miss anything. Besides, clicking this
"autoload more tweets" button isn't really fun. The thing that disturbs me
with the native twitter app is that you can often find gaps in your
timeline, meaning that many tweets don't load at all. Twitterific is
annoying in the way that the "read more" hint is only given after you read a
complete tweet, so you constantly have to remember certain tweets.

I actually think that every twitter client has more or less drawbacks, as I
already tried tweetlist and echophone as well.

I actually would like a twitter client offering the following:
- easy-to-use interface
- usage of several twitter accounts
- favoriting, replying to tweets, sending tweets by email and checking out a
person's profile shouldbe reachable easily (like in twitterific)
- automatically load more tweets without asking
- unified timeline, like in twitterific, that shows tweets as well as direct
messages and mentions
- real muting of persons and hashtags (not like in twitterific where the
tweets are still read to you)
- of course, really good accessibility with VoiceOver
- support of instapaper (especially well implemented in the standard twitter
app)
- integrated browser with cleaner view of articles (like in twitterific)
- loading a large number of tweets (very well done in tweetlist)
- responsiveness (standard twitter app can be sluggish sometimes)
- easy way to check out activity stream (as far as I know, only possible in
the standard twitter app)
- eventually push notifications
- eventually support of lists

Does such an app exist at all? I already wrote to the developers of
twitterific and was told that they wouldn't change the position of the "load
more" button, as their users preferred it the way it is. This one was much
better in previous versions.

Any recommendations are appreciated.

Re: Status Report

2015-05-03 Thread Alexandra - Keinohrhasenfan
Hi,

I'm facing the same issue. Signing out and in into facebook didn't change
anything, and re-installing the app also didn't work. The last time I
couldn't use it with Facebook, I waited for some weeks, and suddenly it
worked again. Guess Facebook changed something in their API which is a pity,
as I really enjoy this app.

Twitterrific 5

2013-04-02 Thread Alexandra - Keinohrhasenfan
Hello,

I installed twitterrific 5 on my iPhone and am now facing some unpleasant
issues.
Firstly ,there doesn't seem to be a refresh button. The timeline only gets
refreshed when you open the app. Is this true, or is the refresh button
hidden somewhere?
Another issue is theway tweets are presented. When I listened to the podcast
by Michael Hansen demonstrating twitterrific, the app fetched over 100
tweets. I'd also like to know the exact number of new tweets that cluttered
in since I opened the app for the last time. Unfortunately, it only shows
less that 100 tweets at once to me. After having read these, I will have to
tab on "load more". This itself is already quite unpleasant, as I never know
how many tweets actually await me. But the more serious issue is the
positioning of the cursor. After loading new tweets, I can't start on the
next tweet. Instead, I'm taken to the tweet which was the newest one when I
started the app before. So I have to scroll firstly from left to right, then
pab on "read more" and then scroll from right to left. This is absolutely
inconvenient, and I know I've missed some tweets so far. Is anyone facing
this issue as well? Twitterrific is a paid app, and I should be able to read
all my tweets in a proper row. I deactivated the unified timeline, as it
said on the twitterrific website that the app would never load more than 100
tweets at one time.
Another problem is the fact that not all the followers of a person are
shown. You only see a few - nothing more. This works much better with the
free app.
Could anyone help me with these issues?

Thanks,

Alexandra

Imo messenger: Needing an alternative, be careful with update

2013-04-11 Thread Alexandra - Keinohrhasenfan
Hello,

the latest update to imo messenger (version 3.5) is pretty inaccessible. You
can still send messages. But it's not possible anymore to see the chat
history. So whenever someone sends out multiple messages, you will only be
able to read the last one. Instead of the chat history, you will find eight
unlabelled buttons from which only one works that brings up the profile of
the person you're supposed to chat with. What a pity! This app used to be
pretty close to perfect: It replaced skype for text messaging, had a clean
interface with no useless clutter, pushed new messages reliably even when
the app wasn't in the app switcher. But that's history. I contacted the
developers but didn't get an answer yet. Can you recommend another app that
allows chatting to skype contacts without the disadvantages of the original
skype app?

Thanks,

It's okay but has some flaws. For example, you can't jump to the beginning
or end of a text entry field when entering a message. When you double tap,
you only receive the standard editing options.

Status report doesn't fetch facebook updates

2013-08-18 Thread Alexandra - Keinohrhasenfan
Hello,

I'm using status report to check my facebook feed, as it's very comfortable
to use and shows much more postings than the regular facebook app or
website. However, every few months, it doesn't fetch any uptades at all.
Instead, the app closes, and you can only read the time and date of the
presumable last refresh. I told the developers about this issue which they
weren't aware of before, and they said they'd take care of it - somehow.
Today, I was confronted with the same issue, so I uninstalled the app,
re-installed it and logged into facebook. But nothing works. Also tried to
turn off the phone which sometimes helped, but no success. I'm using an
iPhone 4S running iOS 6.1.3 and the latest version of status report. Do you
know how to make the app work again? Or can you recommend an alternative?
I've never seen an app that works so well but at some point always refuses
to do the job and has to be re-installed regularly.

Best wishes,

Alexandra

Hello Alexandra,

Unfortunately, the Status Report app is no longer around. They have removed
this app from the store and are no longer available for anyone to download.
So over time I would assume that this app would eventually decease to work.

So sadly I don't have any easy fix to your problem. As Facebook continue to
change things I'd only imagine at some point it would stop working because
of the changes they have done and this app will no longer receive any
updates to resolve those problems.

Hopefully, I can only hope somebody on this list might have a solution that
could extend the life of the app. It was also one of my favorite app to use.

iTunesU, online education

2013-09-11 Thread Alexandra - Keinohrhasenfan
Hi,

did anyone ever participate in free online courses like the ones offered by
udacity? I created an account there, signed up and found out that I couldn't
take the course properly. There are short videos you have to watch.
Afterwards, you have to answer some questions. After having answered the
first question, I wasn't able to go back to the next video using jaws.

So I checked out iTunesU which unfortunately doesn't seem to offer this kind
of interactive education with a combination of videos and questions.

Can anyone recommend a good app for the iPhone or alternatively an
accessible MOOC like udacity to gain some knowledge?

Best regards and thanks for your help,

iOS 7: Deleting all emails in standard mail app

2013-10-14 Thread Alexandra - Keinohrhasenfan
Hello,

I know there's supposed to be this feature that now allows you to delete all
your email messages in your inbox at once. No more need to delete every
single message by swiping up to delete or marking / deleting it. How does
this work exactly?

Thanks,

Alexandra

Can't update: Assistive touch menu blocks screen

2013-10-23 Thread Alexandra - Keinohrhasenfan
Hello,

I just tried to update my iPhone 4S to iOS 7.0.3. The download and
installation went well. However, I have assistive touch (and VoiceOver)
enabled constantly. At the point where I had to enter my Apple ID's
password, the assistive touch menu popped up and doesn't go away since then.
No matter what I do, there's no way to get out of this menu. I guess the
assistive touch menu window is somehow placed over the actual installation
menu. But how am I supposed to use my iPhone again?

Best, Alexandra

Re: Tap TapSee

2013-11-08 Thread Alexandra - Keinohrhasenfan
I love this app, as it is very helpful to me, easy to use and the developers
already said that there could be a fee one day. However, I'd also rather pay
a high price and be able to use the app for a lifetime instead of the
subscription model. A problem I see are these pictures that are useless for
object recognition; pictures that are blurry, too dark or are recorded from
a too near or too far distance or in a wrong rotation. Most blind folks
don't know too much about taking really good, clear, centered photos, so I
guess that, depending on the circumstances, a significant amount of pictures
will be charged but don't return a real result. Maybe it would be possible
to sell a standard edition of the app for a fairly high price and charge
extra money as in app purchases as soon as new features are being added.
Maybe a version with adds would be fine as well, and people who don't like
to see the adds would have to pay the full price.

Alexandra

message stating you need to purchase credits to use their app? I think it
was $7.99 for 100 pictures or $9.99 for unlimited per month. Hope this
doesn't end up hurting them. I would pay for the app but not sure I will be
doing credits. What does everyone else think?

Weather doesn't show up in notification center

2013-09-24 Thread Alexandra - Keinohrhasenfan
Since the update (iOS 7), the weather widget doesn't show up anymore in the
notification center. I read that one had to activate stocks in settings /
notifications / stocks and turn it off again. What this has to do with
weather is Apple's secret, I suppose. Unfortunately, the stocks option isn't
there. I already opened the weather app, and my current place is selected.
So how can I find check the weather quickly again?

Re: Weather widget and current temperature in iOS 7

I agree, Rose. I'd love to get back the weather widget, but in general, the

There isn't this option "close notification center" anymore.

Is there a way to remove the weather widget from the message screen? I
never near a temperature, or if I do it was 20 degrees off, it takes up
space and while I am at it I don't need to see the calendar unless I have
events on it, then what I need are the event and time. I guess I am saying
I want the old message center back, at least is served a purpose. Of

Hi,

There are 3 tabs in Notification center: Today, Missed, and All. If you
choose Today, weather should be shown. Mine wasn't at first. I clicked the
link near the bottom that said Weather by," and was taken to Yahoo Weather.
I didn't do anything with the page; I simply closed it. But after that,
weather was shown. I don't know whether following the link had anything to
do with the weather info appearing. Probably it didn't.

Re: iOS 7, thoughts?

2013-09-25 Thread Alexandra - Keinohrhasenfan
Hello,

I like the new app switcher, the extra features of Siri and the control
center. I don't really appreciate the notification center. It looks rather
cluttered with these three buttons "today", "all" and "missed". Would be
nice if it was possible to disable these. Another thing that bothers me is
that no matter what I try I can't get the weather widget back into the
notification center. This was always a valuable piece of information to me.

The new voices of Siri in German are okay. The male one is rather good,
whereas the female one sounds awful. The German voice of VoiceOver has some
errors it didn't have in iOS 6. For example, it's not even able to say
"VoiceOver" or "app store" properly. This is ridiculous.

In general, the voices got worse, even when you're using the premium voices.
They have some crackling sounds and somehow I feel they were compressed.
Like an MP3 file that was compressed to a lower bitrate which sounds worse
but saves some memory. While the voices got worse, the audio quality still
sounds good. And this contrast is awful, especially when you're listening to
a podcast and a push notification is read meanwhile.

The contrast is especially frustrating when using Siri. Siri
almost
talks like a human, but when you have to listen to additional
information with VoiceOver, the contrast destroys all the good
user
experience. This used to be better on iOS 5 and 6 when
VoiceOver and
Siri sounded similar. This is so annoying that I don't
think
I'll use Siri that often.

Another thing that bothers me is the issue of focus loss within several
apps. It's especially frustrating in Twitter clients when you favorite a
tweet and go back to your timeline or RSS readers. Also the "read all"
gesture doesn't work on Feeddler. When you perform this gesture, VoiceOver
starts every now and then, and you will have to find your reading position
and perform the "read all" gesture again. So there's neither Twitter nor
reading RSS feeds for me since iOS 7.

So it's a week since iOS 7 was released to the public. What are your
thoughts so far? As for me it's very good and I like the new features,
such as Control Centre. However, while it is very usable on my iPhone 4,
it is sluggish, at least from a VoiceOver user's standpoint. But I know
it's going to run just fine on my upcoming iPhone 4s.
All comments welcome.

feature selection, regular updates, great support, and if you use a Mac,
there's a version for that platform and they both sync with the cloud.

Hi All,

I'd like to get your opinion on which podcast app works best with VoiceOver.
I have been using Casts until they released their new version last week.
The new version is a big step backward as far as accessibility is concerned
and I need a new podcast manager/player that's more friendly to VoiceOver.
The ideal app needs to be able to download or stream podcasts independent of
iTunes as I don't sync my phone often. Thanks in advance!

Yup. I can confirm this.
iOS 7 bugs me.
The speech quality is very poor (Norwegian) and I find it to lag.
This is on an iPhone 4S.

I just hear "screen lock", without having heard any incoming mail, message,
etc. when I check I don't have anything new, including alarms, reminders,
etc. I cannot swear 100% there isn't some correlating event. This seems to
occur once or twice a day since the seven update.

Is anyone else experiencing such a thing? I am running and iPhone 5 on
Verizon, 16 GB black model.

Thanks for any thoughts.

MOOCS4U: Online courses on the iPhone

2013-11-13 Thread Alexandra - Keinohrhasenfan
Hello,

is anyone able to use Moocs4U? It's a free app that allows you to watch
online videos from MOOCS provided by Udacity, Coursera and some other
institutions. The app is a fantastic idea, but I couldn't yet watch a single
video, as it crashes constantly. I already exchanged quite a few emails with
the developer who at first said it wasn't optimized for iOS 7. When this was
done officially, still the same errors occurred. Would anyone like to try
this? I'm using an iPhone 4S running iOS 7.03 and the latest version of this
app.

Thanks,

Alexandra

Status report doesn't fetch updates, app closes

2013-11-13 Thread Alexandra - Keinohrhasenfan
Hello,

I'm using status report to check my facebook updates, as I like the way the
statuses are presented. However, the app either crashes, or it simply
doesn't fetch statuses anymore. This happens every few weeks. So I
constantly delete the app, re-install it, log into facebook, and everything
works fine again. Recently, it was closed without fetching anything again,
but re-installation didn't change this. It still closes after having said
"done loading new status updates". But no statuses appear. Do you have any
problems with this app?

Regards,

Alexandra

Re: MOOCS4U: Online courses on the iPhone

2013-11-13 Thread Alexandra - Keinohrhasenfan
Before you will be able to watch a video, you will have to create an account
with one of the MOOCs providers. Afterwards, you will have to create a
specific account for the MOOCS4U app. You will have access to the list of
institutions offering MOOCs as soon as your specific account for this app is
created. Then, you will possibly see the same error-prone behavior as I did.

Possibly! Which provider did you choose? I think it also behaves differently

Annoyances in notification center

2013-11-15 Thread Alexandra - Keinohrhasenfan
Hello,

there's one thing within notification center on my iPhone 4S running iOS
7.0.3 that really annoys me. Whenever I'm reading the news in the
notification center and a new notification pops in, the VoiceOver curser
automatically jumps back to the very first entry. This way, I accidently
deleted the previously incoming notifications. Another thing is that if an
app dares to send you more than three notifications, you can only read three
of them. When you want to check out notification number four, the cursor
jumps back to a previous or next notification. If you swipe any further, you
will be thrown back to the first 1-2 entries. This used to work much better
on iOS 6. Another problem is that when you receive notifications from more
than 7-8 apps, only some apps are shown. Afterwards, the notification center
appears to be empty. If you re-open it, you will find old notifications from
the day before that should have shown up already. In short, the notification
center is fine as long as you don't have too many apps that send you push
messages, and the apps themselves only send out about three messages.

Regards,

Alexandra

Feeddler and TheOldReader: Getting rid of folders

2013-11-16 Thread Alexandra - Keinohrhasenfan
Hello!

Does anyone know how to get rid of a folder in Feeddler? I'm reading my
feeds with a combination of Feeddler and TheOldReader on my iPhone 4S
running the latest version of Feeddler. I entered some feed addresses on
TheOldReader's website manually and in addition imported an OPML file
containing some other feeds. These feeds from this file are now stored in a
folder named subscription. Does anyone know how to get rid of this folder,
as I'd like to have all my subscriptions in one row? Thanks!

App store: Looking up more than 100 results

2013-11-26 Thread Alexandra - Keinohrhasenfan
Hello,

how am I supposed to see more than 100 apps when looking up "top charts" in
the app store? This doesn't seem to work since the introduction of iOS 7.
The same thing seems to be true when you search for a keyword. You're
sometimes told that your query matches more than 100 results, but only 100
are shown. So how can I see those "hidden" results?

Thanks,

Alexandra

Feeddler pro

2013-12-06 Thread Alexandra - Keinohrhasenfan
Hello,

I just installed Feeddler Pro and can't find a way to only show me the items
of one feed. There are the following things: Subscriptions heading, edit
button, the name of my account (email address), all items settings. On the
free version, there was a n option named "feeds" between "all items" and
"settings". Right now, I can only go through a mixed list of all articles.
Sorting by feed doesn't seem to be possible. Any help is appreciated.

Best, Alexandra

Re: Accessible twitter apps

2014-01-23 Thread Alexandra - Keinohrhasenfan
Did anyone else recognize that the sound that is played when new tweets
arrive isn't played anymore although sound effects are turned on? Another
thing is that the number of tweets is only spoken occasionally, not always.
The VoiceOver bug that's mentioned in the update notes (cursor jumps back
to top of list when interacting with a tweet) doesn't seem to be fixed. But
the worst thing is that I can't seem to read older tweets. In the previous
version, you had this "load more" element that was shown after approximately
99 tweets. This isn't directly visibl!a anymore. Now, you read tweet number
99, and afterwards, it says "read more". But I don't know how to double-tab
on this. When you move to the right, you can only read the older tweets. Can
anyone help? Thanks!

It supports streaming, so timelines are updated as soon as tweets arrive.
The notifications I was talking about are push notifications. Tweetlist
checks every few minutes and alerts you, but Twitterrific is always waiting,
so can push an alert immediately. It also supports more than mentions and
DMs - it does follows, favorites of your tweets, and retweets even where you
are not mentioned.

Seems like the bug with VoiceOver that makes the cursor always jump back to

I saw a setting called unified time line and it was turned on but even
turning it off didn't make it look like tweet list.

Push.co app

2014-02-14 Thread Alexandra - Keinohrhasenfan
Hello,

I just downloaded the push.co app and created an account. I want to use it
on an iPhone 4S running iOs 7.0.4. Unfortunately, the app doesn't seem to
be too accessible with VoiceOver. Logging in worked fine, but when I tried
to subscribe to content, it got worse. When I tap on "featured apps" nothing
at all happens. And when I tap on "view all apps", it says "loading push
apps" before the screen freezes and VoiceOver doesn't speak anything. After
that, there's only the heading "all push apps" but no content can be read.
Next to this, I can only find the back button which is, by the way, labelled
as "UI bar button item back circle". Why not only label it "back"? Anyway,
right now, I can't use the app at all, as it doesn't seem to be possible to
subscribe to content neither from within the app nor from the website.
Unfortunately, the developers don't provide an email address or any other
contact details on their website apart from a Twitter account - at least, I
couldn't find them.

Regards,

Alexandra

VoiceOver extremely loud after using dictation since iOS 7.1

2014-03-13 Thread Alexandra - Keinohrhasenfan
Hello,

I really like the iOS 7.1 update so far. Apple has done an amazing job, as
many bugs and annoyances have been fixed. However, there's something that
makes using dictation less fun than before. When you dictate a text (no
matter which app you are using) and double tap to stop dictation, VoiceOver
is very loud, I guess as loud as Siri. It's still very loud when you close
the app. So I start Siri, end it quickly, and VoiceOver is finally speaking
with standard loudness again. Is anyone facing the same issue? I re-started
the phone, but this didn't work. This loudness issue is something I only
recognized after the update to 7.1. Before, only the beep tones that ended
dictation and the repeated text were spoken loudly. Any idea how to fix
this?

Best,

Alexandra

So far, I have not noticed this but try using Siri for something via the
home button where Siri has to speak for a bitt. For example, you could have
her read a wikipedia article or you could dictate a text to someone, or
define a word. While Siri is speaking to you adjust the volume via the
volume up and down buttons to the volume you prefer. Then you can see if
that will fix the volume when you are using dictation in another app.

HTH and good luck,
Christina :)
