Re: Accessible Spades - Is there a developer out there willing to make it happen?
I am currently enjoying a wonderful conversation with the developer of Blindfold Crazy 8's. For anyone who doesn't know, they're fantastic! They responded to my question within 2 hours, and are carrying on an honest conversation with me. It's developers like them that I'll ALWAYS support! The games I'm talking about are, generally speaking, much more in depth than Crazy 8's. NO, I'm NOT saying that Crazy 8's is simple. LOL It's not. It's just that the games I'm hoping to find are usually played with 4 or more players, have or don't have partnerships, depending on if you're playing cut-throat or not, and many of them even get into different card decks, which are not your basic playing card deck. Think of games like Uno. Rook, Phase 10, Five Crowns, and Skip-Bo each use a separate deck, with differing numbers of cards, and which was developed specifically for their game. Think along the lines of, You can't play Skip-Bo with an Uno deck, or, You can't play Rook with a Phase 10 deck. At the moment, Kid Friendly is willing to consider looking at maybe a Hearts or Spades game, one which could only, for now anyway, be played on Game Center. I'm grateful that they're willing to even think about it! *SMILE* What I'd like to find a developer to help develop is a fully sighted version of any of these games, which is VO-accessible. Perhaps it has a setting where VO reads the player and the card played aloud as that player, computer or otherwise, plays the card. Perhaps there could be a setting where one could turn off the automatic pickup of finished tricks, so that a VO-user could review the cards before the next trick if they wished, simply by performing a specific gesture, or by sliding their finger over the screen. As I said, I'm NOT a developer, so I have no clue how much time/effort would be needed for this, though I can only assume that it would be extremely time-consuming. I just thought I'd post to see if, perhaps, there were any developers out there willing to at least look into this. :-) Amy -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. Accessible Spades - Is there a developer out there willing to make it happen?
Hi all. The subject pretty much says it all I guess. I've been desperately seeking a VO-accessible Spades game for about 2 years now, and I haven't yet found one. I've emailed developers of the current Spades games out there, and, if I received a reply at all, the best response I've received is along the lines of, We have a public forum, and if a suggestion gets enough support, we'll definitely consider it. I know diddly-squat about programming, so I looked at GameSalad. I figured that, since I have been an avid Spades player for years, and since I couldn't seem to get help any other way, I'd try it myself, using something that did the programming for me, which is what I freely admit that I have no idea how to do. *GRIN* Well, I learned that, currently, it seems that GameSalad doesn't support the accessability frameworks of IOS and Android, so, unfortunately, I couldn't accomplish what I was trying to do. However, GameSalad has a public forum, and if my suggestion to include the accessibility frameworks got enough support... Well, I'm sure you get the idea. LOL So, is there any developer out there willing to help with developing a VO-friendly Spades game? If you do a search for Spades in this group, you'll see that there are quite a few of us that want it. I myself have been playing Spades for over 35 years with my family and friends, and I know, love, and have played quite a few variations of the game. If, as a developer, you're concerned that it just won't make enough money as compared to the time/effort that you'd have to put into it, please remember this. The card game section of VO-friendly games is small at best. You could develop Spades, Hearts, Pitch (AKA Setback), Phase 10, Skip-Bo, Five Crowns (Or, if you'd prefer to use a regular deck of cards, a variation of that game called Three Thirteen), and many more. If you're a developer interested in helping to make an accessible version of Spades actually happen, please feel free to contact me off-list. My email address is: aharri...@icloud.com Hopefully, there'll be one or two developers out there who are willing to help a desperate Spades junkie who's going through major withdrawal out! Questions from a new braille display user.
Hi everyone. I just received, earlier this week, a Harpo BraillePen 12 Touch, and, although I've been using iDevices since IOS 4, and braille for most of my life, this is my first time with a braille display, and I have a few questions. I got my device paired with no problem. However, when I have my iPhone 6+ running the latest IOS 8 version turned on, and I then turn on my BP12T, they find each other but they don't pair. I have to go into the settings and double-tap the device under Braille in order to get it to pair. I don't have to enter the pairing code, but I do have to manually pair it every time. Any ideas on what I've messed up? Also, when I'm finished using the BP12T, if I use the Chord K to turn it off, my device automatically enters VO Help, and I have to 4-finger double-tap to get out of it every time. My device turns off, but, as soon as it does, I'm dumped into VO Help. If I turn my device back on while in VO Help, it doesn't pair, and I have to exit VO help and go into Settings as mentioned above to tell the keyboard to connect. Finally, I was trying to practice by reading some of my notes in the default Notes app. Everything works, but the HTML code is turned on, and I have to hunt through all of that to find the text of my note. When I go into Messages, and read text messages, that's not the case. In the Messages app I get text without all of the HTML code regarding font/font size, etc. that I receive when trying to read a note in the Notes app. Any thoughts on that one? Thanks in advance for helping a newbie in working with a braille keyboard/display in IOS get started! Amy -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. RE: Questions from a new braille display user.
Thank you so much Charles and Gina! That did the trick. I need to make sure my screen is locked, turn on my BP12T, unlock my screen, and it pairs pretty much immediately. I reverse the steps to unpair/power off my BP12T, and, when I do that, it doesn’t dump me into help when I unlock my screen again. This helps a ton! If anyone knows the answer re the Notes app, and if there is any way I can stop the BraillePen from showing me HTML code in my notes, which don’t have links by the way. They’re just notes like, “Pick up milk on the way home.” (Well, not exactly, but there’s no bold print, or anything else fancy. I have two more questions. First, does anyone know of a braille command to lock/unlock your iDevice with a braille keyboard? I fully understand that this may not be at all possible, but I was thinking of a situation where I might have my BraillePen out, but my iPhone in my purse. It would be great if I could use a keyboard command to lock/unlock the iDevice in such a situation. Also, is there some way to leave the VoiceOver hints turned on as far as speaking them is concerned, but to set it so that the hints are not displayed on the braille display, even if VO speaks the hints aloud? Thanks again everyone! I’m really grateful for all the help, and I’m having a blast learning something new. *GRIN* Amy -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. Re: braillepen 12 touch question
Hi Alia, I just asked some questions here about the BraillePen 12 Touch a couple of days ago. I also emailed Larry Lewis, from Flying Blind, whose info has been posted on this group a couple of times. He is very helpful!!! In my email to him, one of the questions that I asked was whether the cursor routing keys over each braille cell on the BraillePen 12 Touch had been made to work in this latest IOS update. Here is the portion of his reply which answers that question. Thanks for the message. In the interest of transparency, you should know that my company sells a number of Braille displays and we are the US importer for the BraillePen. I’m familiar with all of the portable options. Unfortunately, Apple did not get the Touch Cursor support implemented in the latest iOS release despite the fact that they’ve had a BraillePenTouch for approximately 6 months. They anticipate releasing the cursor routing support in the next release. However, we’re offering customers alternative firmware which allows the BraillePenTouch to emulate another Braille protocol within Voiceover that does provide the touch cursor support, so we do have a workable cursor routing solution in the short-term. This solution does in fact affect the JAWS support within the BraillePenTouch’s initial firmware. Again, this is a work-around that does quite a nice job for iOS users. So, as I understand that reply, Larry's company can help get a BraillePen Touch working by using a short-term work-around, but this work-around may have the potential to affect how things might work with JAWS. That's just my personal interpretation of that response, mind you. I also learned from Larry that his company is selling the BraillePen Touch for $995, which is a great price, as I've seen others selling it for $1099 and up. I hope this helps in some way, as I'm currently doing the same research on braille displays. Amy -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. RE: BraillePen 12 Touch
Hi all, and thanks for the opinions I've gotten so far. Stacey, thanks for letting me know that the 12 doesn't have any form of routing keys at all. That makes the decision easy. I'll get the BraillePen 12 Touch. Are there any problems that anyone has run into with either the 12, or, if anyone has used it, with the 12 Touch? Thanks all. :-) Amy -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. All new members to the this list are moderated by default. BraillePen 12 Touch
Hi all. Has anyone used the BraillePen 12 Touch, the one with the routing touch areas above each braille cell? I'd like to know whether it is worth buying one to work with my iDevices? Also, I think the answer is no, but just to double-check, does the BraillePen 12, not the new Touch version but the regular version, have cursor buttons above its braille cells, or do you use buttons/joysticks to move the cursor on that model? I'd like to be able to push a button over the braille cell, or, in the case of the BraillePen 12 Touch, touch an area over the braille cell, to place my cursor there. RE: BraillePen 12 Touch
Thanks for the reply Brian. I did contact the vendor. They actually say that you can set the BraillePen Touch up as a different braille device and it works. They say that’s a temporary work-around, but that it works for now, and that Apple has had the new BraillePen Touch for 6 months now and the “driver” update should be coming out soon in IOS. I was just wondering whether anyone here had used the Touch, and what the opinions were? If no one has used the touch, what are some opinions on the regular BraillePen 12? BTW, I got the info about installing the BraillePen touch as a different device from Larry Lewis, so you guys can contact him to get further info on that if any of you have a Touch and want to know what device to install it as. You can get his contact info at: www.Flying-Blind.com http://www.Flying-Blind.com He was very helpful to me, and he’s who I’ll be buying from if/when I buy. Re: The new Mint is totally accessible
With either Mint or Check, could I go to the store, run a charge on either one of my credit cards or my debit card, but run it as a credit and not put in the ATM code, and then go outside and immediately enter that charge manually? I ask this because I don't want to wait the 2-3 days that it might take for that charge to get processed. I'd like to just go ahead and enter it so that I know what my balance will be once everything has cleared. I'm using Microsoft Money 2004 on my PC now, but I'd like to find a good iPhone app that I can sync with either a PC based app or online, and that I can also sync with my bank so that cleared charges are marked while charges that I've manually entered but that haven't cleared the bank/credit card yet are shown, but are not marked as reconciled. Hope that makes sense? If Check or Mint don't do this, does anything have a recommendation of something I might want to look at? TIA! Re: Solara Arena battles + possible spoiler requests
Hi Denny and all. I've developed a way of finding out who the enemies I'll be fighting in a quest are before fighting. I have/use an iPhone 5, so hope this works for everyone. You know how, once you've read what the quest is and what the rewards will be, how it tells you stuff like, Let's get 'em! or, Oh no, there's more! Stuff like that. Then, when you flick right, you hear, Battle. Well, if a quest has, for example, 3 parts 2 it, go to what you think is roughly the bottom third of your screen. Make sure you have your finger on the far left of the screen when you do that. You'll hear the same thing about, Let's get 'em! or whatever little comment they've put at each part, but, if you start from the far left hand side of the screen, you can then flick right and hear who you'll be battling. It sounds something like: Let's get 'em! (Flick once to the right) Giant (Flick once to the right) Giant (Flick Once to the right) Troll (Flick once to the right) Wardon (Flick once to the right) Battle Button The only way I've ever been able to get this to happen is if I do it with my finger on the far left side of the screen. I know, thanks to my sighted friend who also plays, that this is probably because, visually, they have little pictures of the characters you'll be battling on the far left, then the, Let's get 'em! or whatever in the middle, and then Battle Button is on the far right. Hope I've explained this where it makes sense, and hope it works on all devices! Amy P.S. This is only for quests, not for the arena. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Post a new message to VIPhone by emailing viphone@googlegroups.com. Re: solara questions now I am playing
Hi all. I'm a partial, barely, *GRIN* and I use VoiceOver. I'm up to level 32 on Solara now, and loving it. Tess, I think it was you that said you'd like to know about the level widths? Let me know if I'm wrong about who asked. I can tell you that the game starts with a width of 8. At one level upgrade, and I'm sorry, but I forgot which one it is, you get a width increase of +2, so then your levels would be 10 wide. Then, several level increases after that, you get another +2 width increase. As of right now, at level 32, my levels are 12 squares wide. I also know from experience with VoiceOver, that when you go into Buildings Upgrades, and there is a new castle expansion level available, you can make VO tell you what that level will give you. The thing is, it seems like you have to find the magic starting spot. I couldn't tell you where that is, as I miss it sometimes and have to fiddle a bit, tapping on the line that says something like, Castle level increase: 220,000 gold pieces, from left to right, then flicking once, then tapping on that line in a spot slightly further to the right and flicking right once, until it finally tells me. So, I might touch the line and hear, Castle level 22: 220,000 gold pieces. So, I flick right and hear, Select. So, I go back to the castle line and move my finger a little to the right of where I think I tapped last time. I'll hear the castle level number/cost stuff again, so I flick right once. You may have to do this 2 or 3 times, but I'm able to get VO to read me what the level gives me once I finally hit that sweet spot. So, it would go like this. Castle level 22: 220,000 gold pieces. If I've managed to hit the sweet spot, when I flick right one time I'll hear something like, Plus 1 height, or, I might hear, Plus 2 wide. So far, it has been that, when I gain height, I do not gain width, and when I gain width, I don't gain a level of height. I hope this makes sense! I'm trying to type this while at work, so if I'm speaking gobblety-gook, don't hesitate to tease me. *GRIN* Hope this might be of use to some folks! Re: solara questions now I am playing
Oops! Sorry. I forgot to say that, when the castle levels increase in width, that goes all the way down to the bottom of the castle. So, even though our first few levels started at being 8 wide, when we build that first upgrade level that adds a +2 wide, but no height, that +2 wide goes all the way down to the bottom, so now, all of our levels that had been 8 wide, and that we'd filled with shops, are now 10 wide, with a 2 wide slot at the end. Same happens when you get to the second level I've hit that gives us another +2 in width. All of our levels that had started at 8 wide, and that had then moved to 10 wide when we did the first width castle upgrade, will now be 12 wide when we do the second +2 wide castle upgrade. It was kind of cool for me, because when I built that first castle expansion level that just increased my width by 2, but didn't add any height, I really didn't have any shops that were 2 wide and either 1 or 2 high that I wanted to buy, so I just left it. I had lots of rows that had been bull, which now had 2 squares at the end of them that I wasn't using. Then, when I finally hit the second width expansion level, those rows suddenly had 4 empty slots at the end. Since I hadn't filled them up with the first +2 width expansion, once I got the second +2 wide expansion done, I had 4 empty squares in a row, and I could now build some 4 high/1 wide shops, and, in some cases, because I'd left so many of them open when I only had 2 squares added to the end, once I finally finished the second +2 wide level, I could even build some 4 wide/2 high shops. Man that was nice, 'cuz I needed the gold! hehe HTH, Amy -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Re: Card games
I really wish there were more card games. I have tried pretty much every Spades game, as well as Bridge, Pitch, Hearts, Phase 10, and on and on. *GRIN* I haven't found any that are accessible. I've contacted tons of the game developers, asking if they would be willing to consider working on accessibility using VO, and said that I'd help in any way I could. I've only had 3 responses out of over 20 contacts. I grew up playing cards, and I'd kill for some VO accessible card games. LOL I've even considered trying to learn to program for IOS, in order to create my own games, but I honestly don't think I have the skill level for that. I wondered if it was possible to, for example, have different VO voices read what was played. So, my default voice reads my cards, plus buttons/bids/scores and such, while another voice reads what my partner plays, and 2 other VO voices read what each opponent plays. So, I'm using the female American English voice as my default, and she reads my cards and such, while the male American English voice reads what my partner plays. Then, I could have say the male and female Australian English voices read for my 2 opponents. Course, you'd have to have the games I mentioned above that were VO accessible to begin with. LOL Just my 2 cents, for what they're worth. :-) Amy -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Re: An important suggestion for anyone contemplating buying the StandScan Pro!
I too have been hearing a lot about this 12v battery adapter, and have been eagerly looking for it all over the web site. I also haven't found it. The 12v power adapter came with my StandScan Pro, as did the 9v battery adapter, but I haven't been able to find anywhere on the site where I could get a 12v battery adapter, or anything about the pencil batteries. If anyone already has some information on where we can get this, I'd appreciate it if you'd post it to the list. In the meantime though, I'm contacting the manufacturers to ask the question, as the 12v battery adapter and the correct batteries are something I'd love to have to go with this great product! Reading protected ebooks (epub and mobi) out loud without VoiceOver.
Hi List, I'm a VoiceOver user, but I have a student who is a Zooms-only user on an iPad 4. We seem to be running into the occasional conflict/freeze when/if we attempt to turn on VO and Zooms at the same time, and, besides, its a bit of a pain to have to constantly go into the Accessibility Settings to turn VoiceOver on/off just to read books. (I definitely miss the days when a triple tap of the Home key could be set to ask you what you wanted to turn on or off.) Anyway, here is my question. This student will be using Zooms 100% of the time, and we'd rather not force her to have to turn VoiceOver on/off whenever she wants to hear an ebook read out loud. Most/all of her ebooks will be purchased from the iTunes store, and thus will be in a protected epub format. Does anyone know of an app out there that could read iTunes purchased/protected ebooks out loud/via voice, but NOT use VoiceOver to do this? I know that this can be done in iBooks with VoiceOver turned on, but we're trying not to have to force her to dig through Settings to get into Accessibility to turn VO on/off, and the Home button needs to be set to operate Zooms for her. I looked at NaturalReader, but it doesn't seem to do protected epubs/mobis, and Read2Go does epubs/mobis, but not protected ones purchased legally from iTunes. Is there a way, or an app, that will allow Zooms users to have legally purchased iTunes/Amazon ebooks read aloud to them without having to root around through Settings/General/Accessibility each time they need to turn VO on/off just for a book. I know that would be too much of a pain for me to bother with personally. Thanks for any help/advice! Amy P.S. I know about audiobooks as I'm an avid audiobook/Audible reader myself, but I wondered if there was a way to give her the option of either an ebook or an audiobook, which is the same option that I personally have using VoiceOver. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Re: Small braille keyboard/displays for iPhone
VaShaun, I'd honestly be very interested in your opinion on the Focus 14 when you receive it. I'm not sure if that's the way I need to go, especially given that I'm a ZoomText user and thus don't need the compatibility with JAWS. I'd mainly be using my braille keyboard/display on my iDevices and nowhere else, so I'd really appreciate your thoughts on how the Focus 14 works with IOS 6. On a different note, though same topic, what do all of you think about the HumanWare BrailleConnect 12? I'm looking for small/functional/easy to carry, and I saw the post here in another topic stating that this one could be carried in a jeans pocket. That really peaked my attention. Please let me know of any gotchyas that I should be looking out for, if any. I really appreciate the help that all of you are giving me on this one, and I'm also keeping up with the other topic on this list discussing braille displays. I do have to say one thing. It would be very nice if there was a store, similar to Best Buy, where I could go and get a hands-on look at these products. I mean, you guys can only help me so much, and then the final decision is mine. *GRIN* Amy -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Re: Small braille keyboard/displays for iPhone
Hi Erik, and thanks for the info on the BrailleConnect! No, I don't live on Onterio, or even close, but thanks for being willing to set up a demo for me if I did. Yeah, one of the things I'm finding while looking to buy a braille display is that you pretty much have to buy based on the description/opinion of others. My state agency doesn't even have any to let me look at, nor do any of the other folks I talk to in the state. I even went to a company in a neighboring state, and they couldn't arrange a demo for me, not of braille displays, and it is because of the cost, just as you said. Oh well, looks like I'm the guienna pig on this one for our area. *GRIN* At least I have this list and all of you to ask/receive thoughts/opinions from. Hey, I don't have to do it blind. *BOO HISS* LOL Amy -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Small braille keyboard/displays for iPhone
Hi all, I'm looking at buying an iphone 5 as well as a braille keyboard/display. I need the keyboard/display to be in one single unit, to connect using bluetooth, to also work with my iPad 2, and to be very small/portable. I've been looking at the BraillePen 12 or the RefreshABraille 18, but I thought I'd ask if there were any others in that size range that might be worth looking at, and if there were any pros/cons to any of them. Does the list think that I should wait until IOS6 and/or the new iTunes come out before I purchase a braille display? Thanks for any quick thoughts on this subject. Re: Small braille keyboard/displays for iPhone
Thanks for the info! :-) I've been looking at the BraillePen 12 and I hadn't heard about the HumanWare 14-cell display! I'm going to add that to my list. *GRIN* Below are the ones that I've been considering. I'd appreciate any thoughts that anyone has on them. RefreshABraille 18 (8-dot Braille display.) BraillePen 12 VarioConnect 12-cell (Baum) EasyLink 12 (Optelec) HumanWare Focus 14 (Thanks to the list! *GRIN*) Also, I grew up on 6-dot Braille. For anyone that knows/has learned 8-dot Braille, is it a hard adaptation to make? Thanks again! Amy -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Re: Small braille keyboard/displays for iPhone
Sharonda, thanks for the clarification, and thanks for the Essys 14 Kawal. I knew that if I asked here I could get REAL help. You know, useful help. *GRIN* I know that some braille displays are notetakers in and of themselves. That's not really what I need. I need something more along the lines of being able to turn off VoiceOver on my iDevice yet still use it through braille while in a meeting. Does that eliminate any of these devices? I'd also love a display that worked with iPhone apps like Pages, Messages, Notes, Mail, Reminders, my grocery list app, and so on. Does such a thing even exist, or does it all have to be done through the particular braille display's software? Re: Small braille keyboard/displays for iPhone
I pretty much haven't used braille since school either, and I don't want to think about how long ago that was, *GRIN* but I can see where it would really come in handy for me in meetings so I really want/need to re-learn computer braille. Sheesh, can you say run-on?!!! I thought I learned English in school too, but apparently NOT! LOL I really appreciate the info on computer braille, and the info on the app, which I intend to BUY, especially since it came along after I graduated. I think that, especially when I'm supposed to be taking notes in meetings, this will really be helpful! I can't appreciate this enough since I wouldn't have a clue without everyone's help!
