Re: Making Your Home a Place on FourSquare

I was reading on FourSquare where you can make your home a place to
check in, and it won't be on the map as an exact place. It's not
really clear how that's done, or not to this non-technical person
anyway.

It doesn't need to search for a place if you are already there.
double tap on Search Places and type in the name that you want to
give to
the location. For safety reasons, I wouldn't call it something like
My
house. The screen will populate with a bunch of results, but what you
need
to do is to go to the end of the list, and you should see something
like
Add a location. Double tap on that and follow the prompts.
Personally, I
can see little reason to make your home a location, unless you really
want
to become the mayor of something. One reason that I have heard is that
if
you hold parties or other functions at your home, you can ask guests
to
check in, and you will have an idea who is there, and fellow guests

Tina, the first thing you do is bring up foursquare, double tap on
check in,
double tap on search, type in the address, swipe to the right until
you see
add this place then you will see the address again. Delete the address
and
type home, select the category, then there is either another add this

writing a grocery list.
Why would what you are doing look any weirder? My personal preference

I am

Sieghard makes a great point about a bllind person tapping along with

Hi Bryce,

Also keep in mind that just because one colleague thinks it looks
weird and
unprofessional it doesn't mean everybody thinks that. It may also look
unprofessional in certain situations to try and find your way around
by
tapping along with a white cane or at least some may say that it is.
In any
case, whether it is or isn't is in my opinion beyond the point, you do
what
you have to do. I prefer a headset but if I didn't have one and had to
type
a message I'd have no problems holding the phone in whichever way
allows me
to do so.

Thanks, Raul. You touch on the reason I started this; the whole
holding the
phone up close to the ear and tapping away. This is what I've
naturally
preferred, but a colleague pointed out how weird and unprofessional it
looks. It's not something I had thought about before and I was kind of
caught off guard. It does make sense how odd it probably looks to hold
a
phone up chest level or next to your cheek or ear and type, though.

I do not have hearing problems at all. Still, at least for me, I've
got to
have the voice near my ear when typing because when using touch typing
it
can be difficult to really hear Samantha in a lot of environments
without
turning the volume up. These are the only times I wish the iPhone had
a
physical keyboard.

Finally, the speakers on the iPhone 4s are kind of bad, anyway. When I
was
using a Mophie Battery Juice case the speakers faced up which made the
sound
clearer.

Just some observations.

Hi,

I'm curious to know how you all listen and use your phones when you're
out in public. Do you use earbuds and an earpiece, or do you turn the
speech down low and do your best?

In noisy environments most people can just look down at their phones.
If you use speech, you want to be able to hear the speech without
everyone else hearing it or becoming distracted by it, too. Sometimes
I'll just hold the phone up toward my shoulder/ear and type/text so I
can keep the volume down real low for privacy, but this looks really
odd and unprofessional. I've thought about grabbing an earpiece or
earbuds, but I usually forget, or it's just something else to charge
and keep track of.

What works for you?

For those who didn't already know, your Apple earbuds/earPods are

under Apple care. So, you have a year from the purchase of your

 Hi Brice,

As Chuck and Richard already pointed out, a Bluetooth earpiece is
one solution. But as you say, it is another item you have to make
sure is charged up and I personally don't like it if I have to do
any amount of typing. I do own one and use it at times, but first
of all I feel I look like a nurd (no offense to anybody who wears
it all day) and I just don't like the small lag when I am typing,
it makes typing on the virtual keyboard even slower as it is.
 There
is also a third reason why I don't want to have it in all day and
that is the fact that nobody really knows if it is all that
 healthy.

I very much prefer the Apple earpods, they are less conspicuous
 and
even lighter than even the lightest Bluetooth earpiece. Depending
on where I am and what I am doing I often just have the right one
in my ear since it has the microphone and remote and I just have
the left one hanging around my neck. It's become total habit for
 me
to grab them in the morning, wrap them around my hand and put
 them
 in my pocket.

In short, if you are in public and you don't want anybody to hear
your phone a headset or earpiece of some sort is your only
 option.
I personally wouldn't be too worried about people listening to a
text message I might type, somebody really would have to pay
attention to put together what you are typing if they hear a
 letter
at a time, but of course if it's noisy a headset really is the
 way
to go and it has the additional benefit that you can keep your
phone on your belt or in your pocket when a call comes in.

 Sieghard

 Hi,

I'm curious to know how you all listen and use your phones when
you're out in public. Do you use earbuds and an earpiece, or do
 you
turn the speech down low and do your best?

In noisy environments most people can just look down at their
 phones.
If you use speech, you want to be able to hear the speech without
everyone else hearing it or becoming distracted by it, too.
Sometimes I'll just hold the phone up toward my shoulder/ear and
type/text so I can keep the volume down real low for privacy, but
this looks really odd and unprofessional. I've thought about
grabbing an earpiece or earbuds, but I usually forget, or it's
 just
something else to charge and keep track of.

 What works for you?

Tina, the first thing you do is bring up foursquare, double tap on
 check in,
double tap on search, type in the address, swipe to the right until
 you see
add this place then you will see the address again. Delete the
 address
 and
type home, select the category, then there is either another add
 this
 place
or check in. I think you check in after that.

If you have questions, I am on skype at blackpearl1953 or windows

I tried what you said, Andy, and adding the place doesn't come up.
When I go into the search bar, different things show up. When I
 type
in what I want my home to be called, it won't find it. I have seen
 the

It doesn't need to search for a place if you are already there.
double tap on Search Places and type in the name that you want to
 give to
the location. For safety reasons, I wouldn't call it something like
 My
house. The screen will populate with a bunch of results, but what
 you
 need
to do is to go to the end of the list, and you should see something
 like
Add a location. Double tap on that and follow the prompts.
 Personally, I
can see little reason to make your home a location, unless you
 really
 want
to become the mayor of something. One reason that I have heard is
 that
 if
you hold parties or other functions at your home, you can ask
 guests
 to
check in, and you will have an idea who is there, and fellow guests
 can see
who has checked in. Kind of a neat way for blind folks to know
 who's
 there,
providing that your guests are into 4square.

The problem is not the app you are using for twitter but the twitter
setting inside the settings app. Go into settings and find the twitter
setting. double tap this and remove your accounts that you don't want
anymore. Another suggestion is to reset your twitter password for the

FourSquare Won't Link with Twitter

I've had two accounts on this IPhone, and want to go back to the old

Can anyone suggest anything? Should I do a new install of Blind Square

Re: BlindSquare - price and a question

2013-05-13 Thread Tina Murphy
I bought Blind Square for 6 dollars, and at that time someone said
that was less that half price of the 14 dollars. It sounds like Blind
Square's gone up in price!

A new upgrade just came through where intersections are given closer
to the street crossing. There's a Look Around feature you can use
where you point the phone in a direction and you'll be told what's in
that direction. There's also a Location button that tells you where
you are and where the intersections all around you are as you swipe
through them.

Hope this helps.

Re: thoughts on blind square

2013-05-12 Thread Tina Murphy
I'm not a power user of Blind Square. I do like that when I'm walking
or riding places, it tells me the intersections I'm coming up to.

Depending on how you have your settings, you can hear what businesses
are around you. And it's very easy to toggle those on and off.

I haven't run a search for anything, though I see you can.

Blind Square gets its information from 4-Square, so, if you haven't
already, you will need to download that free app as well.

Hope this helps.

Amazon's Verbatim Folding Bluetooth Keyboard

2013-05-02 Thread Tina Murphy
Hi All,
I remember reading that many people recommended the Verbatim folding
Bluetooth Wireless keyboard from Amazon. When I went to the site, I
found four of them. I'd appreciate people's first-hand experience on
which one is best to buy. I don't need something to control music. I
just want a folding keyboard I can carry with me that opens up into a
decent sized keyboard so I don't spend more time making errors the way
I do on one of the teny, tiny keyboards when I try to type messages
and/or emails, etc.

Thanks so much,

Raul, we can't do that with Verizon. The data is just shared between

Re: Considering shrinking our data plan big time!

2013-03-11 Thread Tina Murphy
Traci, If the finances are your concern, then I'd go for the shared
plan. I'd check to be sure there aren't any extra charges before you
do that though that might make it not worth sharing the plan.

As other's mention, once you go to the shared plan, you won't be able
to go to the unlimited data, if that's important to you.

My boyfriend and I don't use more than one gig, but I've kept the 2
gig data plan because I'd rather pay the extra 40 dollars a month than
be billed the extra 15 if I go over. As time goes buy, our data uses
has risen, especially my boyfriend's.

Hello there. You will probably get other answers and so far I have
read two other messages on this. It is not exactly a VoIP number,
instead it is a virtual number. This means that for the most part if
you have it forwarding to your cell phone number, when you make and
receive calls to or from your Google voice number it will still use
your cell phone minutes. You can of course use apps like talkatone to
make data voice calls. One advantage of Google voice is that if you
use it to text message, the messages are On the Google voice website
and are virtually stored forever. Or at least as long as you want them
to. In any case, a lot longer and easier to manage than the messages
app on the phone. Another advantage is that if you get an incoming
call through your Google voice number, you can record the phone call.
This will play a message that all parties will here so they know they
are being recorded. This comes in handy and of course you can later
retrieve it from the Google voice website. There are many more
advantages and I could go on forever and ever since I am a huge fan of
Google voice. However I will mention one last advantage and say no
more unless others are interested. I have an ObiTalk Phone bridge
adapter. With this adapter I can make it so it uses Google voice as
it's line. That means that my home phone is actually a Google voice
number and I don't have to pay for home phone service. As long as I
have this adapter connected to the Internet and configured, then I get
free phone service.

Re: great fitness app free for today

2013-02-21 Thread Tina Murphy
I paid 99 cents for it, since I've been catching up on my mail and am
way behind.

I can't see myself doing these exercises where I work, butI like that
it will make me get up and out of my chair every 45 minutes. My doctor
says I'm supposed to be drinking more water, so this is a good app to
have to remind me to ge get a glass or water. smile

Thanks for sharing.

This app, Move Daily Activity to Stay Healthy, is well named. I got
it for
free but would be willing to pay a small price for it if needed. I do
like
this app and the reminder to do something every 45 minutes. I am not
in
great shape (understatement) so when it says to do something too hard
or
unknown I just do other exercises I know are good and click I did it.
You
can also click refresh and get something else to do. But the main
thing is
to do something.
And I think it is important to click the I did it button. Yesterday I
did
something on my own when it said but did not click the button and then
it
accused me of skipping 8 times!! So now I do something and click I
did it.
Really nice app.
I do like your idea about saving verbal descriptions of the exercises.
Maybe we could suggest other good ones to the developer as well.
The timers are nice, too. Like when it says to do something for a
minute
you can push the button for the timer.

Hi,

Yeah, sorry about that. The first one I tried was a woman explaining
everything very clearly, and that's when I posted my message. I didn't
realize that all the videos are done by different people, and that
some are
a lot more visual than others. My sighted son is going to do some of
them
with me, so if he explains how to do one, I'll post it. If others who
have
sighted help can do the same, we can make a collection of
explanations, and
then send them to the developer so that maybe he can add them in a
future
update.

 Hi, Mary,

A brf file is actually a plain ASCII text file with normal
characters that represent Braille. There is no special computer
formatting for a brf file. Therefore, this same text is rendered
accurately when it's placed into an epub file.

You can use Stanza to convert files to epub. You can also use
TextEdit to export the files to pdf format.

Again, the text, completely translated into Grade Two as
originally produced by NLS, is rendered perfectly. It looks
perfect on a Braille display, but since the characters represent
Braille, it will be spoken as gibberish if you use speech.

 Hi Teresa,
I'm confused. What I think you said is that it is possible to
read brf files if you first convert them to epub for importation

And once you did that, then wouldn't it be translated out of
braille grade II into regular print in the epub form? So you'd
need a braille translator together with a program that converted
the text from the braille translator into epub? And then you
would have to read that file with grade II translation turned on.
Clearly, I'm missing some big step here.

Yes, you can first convert them to epub or pdf format on your computer
and then read them in Ibooks. There are other ways to read them, but
most of those I've tried do not allow you to bookmark your place.
Ibooks will allow you to pick up where you left off.

Also, you can only read them on a display without speech, and you must
have contracted Braille off.

Hi all!

Thanks for checking out Fleksy!

In standard Fleksy typing mode, a swipe left will always delete the
last
word entered, or the word currently being typed.

It is possible, however, to delete by character, when in accutyping
mode.
This is the typing mode that enables entering custom words: Tap and
hold on
the keyboard and drag to your desired letter. Release. Every letter
you
input this way, you can delete with a swipe left.

You can at any time dive into the extensive instructions by visiting

Much of the audio only content they produce is not available via

Dear Sieghard,

One nice accessible overview of battery saving was provided in episode
243 of the Today in iOS podcast. rob lists 13 actions someone can
take to drastically reduce battery drain on their iPhone. His list is
given at the 10 minute 10 second mark in the show.

Many apps constantly check remote servers, also called the cloud, for
new and updated data. On the iPhone, this is called push. All this
checking zaps battery power. If folks can update only when they use
an app, such as e-mail or contacts, battery life can be extended.
This can be set in Settings Mail, Contacts, Calendars Fetch New Data.

Many apps also constantly update including Facebook, Twitter, and
stock-reporting apps to name a few. As I said earlier, people should
go to the notification center, tap each app name, and decide which
ones need to constantly update. The fewer that do, the greater
battery life.

When I go to Settings Privacy Location Services, I have found a list
of all the apps that uses the iPhone’s location feature. Yes, apps
like Sendero, Navigon, and Around Me must use location services to
function. Other apps like Twitter and Facebook use it only to
location stamp your posts. Yes, we need some location service use for
certain apps. Some apps don’t really need to use it. These apps are
the stealth battery hogs as they constantly keep track of your
location but add little value to the end user most of the time.

 You say:

also, go into privacy and turn off GPS checks.

I have neither a GPS checks option in privacy settings nor do I
 have an
option to adjust how often apps check for updates in Notifications.

I agree that WiFi uses a fair amount of battery power, in my opinion
 a lot
more than Bluetooth. However, keep in mind that turning on Location
 Services
for certain apps does not impact the battery life unless these apps
 make
 use
of it. I personally didn't buy a smartphone just so I can turn it
 into a
 dum
phone or at least a not so smart phone. I use apps like Sendero,
 Navigon,
Around Me etc. and these apps require locations services to work
 properly,
but if I don't use the app it's not going to use it so I rather
 leave it on
for those apps for when I do want to use them and when I'm done with
 them I
take them out of the app switcher.

 Sieghard

I really like my ipad 4th generation with the Logitech ultra-thin
keyboard cover. At home the iPad is always either standing in the
stand part of the keyboard cover or it is laid down with the clip
keeping it securely in place so that it is inseparable from the
keyboard cover. But I'm thinking that if I want to take it anywhere I
want the keyboard cover and iPad to be further protected. I don't need
a case that will encompass the iPad while in the stand but one that
will snugly fit and cushion the keyboard cover and iPad in closed
position. I'm sure I can find some kind of zippered carrying-bag so
don't really need something specifically for this iPad and keyboard
cover but wondered if anybody had come across something that is a good
and protective fit.

I got the Poetic keyboard case from amazon. It is a imitation leather
folio case with a removable BT keyboard in side. Its a great case if
stylish, and extra productivity is what your looking for. The
spacking of the keys, aand overall feel of the BT keyboard is better
than I imagined. I can really fly typing on that thing. I believe it
cost me $20. It also has those magnets built in the case for the auto

Hello Folks,

I have been dealing with a serious problem with unusually high data
usage,
eversince I upgraded my iPhone 4S to IOS six. Every month, I use all
of my
data plan in the first two or three days of the month, even though I
rarely
ever use my phone outside my house. At home I use my own wifi
connection.
Last month my entire data plan was eaten up in the first day of the
month.
I turned celular data off to avoid being overcharged, but the problem
with
this solution is that I can never get my voicemail messages unless I
turn
the celular back on. This month I am already over sixty percent of my
data
although I made sure not to do anything on my phone outside the house
other
than just answering my phone calls. Needless to say that I still have
over
two weeks before my new month starts. Does anyone with ATT have
similar
problem? Is this a problem with my phone or a problem with ATT
system?

I did everything I could to troubleshoot this problem to no avail. I
even
restored the phone twice, and no improvement. If anyone has any
suggestions
to help me troubleshoot this problem, I will appreciate it.

Cheers,

Cris

Re: accessible alternative apps for reminders, notes and birthday calenders?

2012-12-10 Thread Tina Murphy
I use hifutureself, all one word. It's an app that you can send a text
message to yourself at whatever time you choose. There's a free
version. The paid version which is about two dollars, has added
features such as repeat reminders, so I bought it. I really like this
app. It's totally accessible, even to someone as limited as me with
the gestures I remember.

If you're interested, www.applevis.com has a review of this app.

Hi Liz,

You may have to authorize your computer and this can be done in the
store
menu, Alt+S will get you there, then arrow down to the bottom of
that
menu.

You also may want to start with Jonathan Mosen's FS Casts on iTunes.
The
demo is with Jaws 12 and iTunes 10, but even though things have
changed in
iTunes 11, you would still get a lot out of these especially if you
enable
the Side Bar in the View menu (Alt+V) or with the Control+s shortcut.
This
makes iTunes 11 look more like iTunes 10 and many of the basic
principals
still apply. Here are direct links to these FS Casts:

Hello,

This process is very easy to accomplish.
1. Open the notebook from which you want to delete a file.
2. find the note you want to edit - in this case delete.
3. Flick once to the right until you hear voiceover announce note
title (insert title name here), then double-tap on the file to view
the note.
3. Flick twice to the left and voiceover should announce the delete
button.

My own question dealing with Evernote, when importing PDF files, is
there a way to have them not be set as images because voiceover cannot
read the text unless I copy paste the file content. This is similar
for the Macintosh. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Of course I bought a screen protector, but I didn't really realize one

that my finger was the slightest bit sticky, and I barely touched the
screen. Not sure if it left some kind of mark or spot, but I don't
want my

my fingers are all over that thing. What do you guys do to keep your

looking as good as they did when you first got them?

Subject: possible dictation bug on iPads

Hi folks,

I would appreciate if someone could confirm this for me. I have an
iPad mini and, when using applications not optimized for iPads in
other words, you need to enlarge them to fit the screen, trying to use
dictation causes these apps to crash. Can those using an iPad mini,
iPad 4 and the iPad 3rd generation check this out?

Thanks.

Re: Case and Screen Protector (was) New Iphone 5

2012-11-25 Thread Tina Murphy
I got an Otterbox Defender Case for my IPhone 4S, but I really like
and find I need one of the tactile screen protectors, so can't use
both. I got one of those cases to cover the back that goes around the
sides. I don't know that the screen protector will protect the glass
from being cracked, in fact doubt that it will, but at least it will
keep it from being scratched and smeared in day to day use.

Thanks. I've been considering buying this file, but I'm not really
good with apps yet. I appreciate your work on the podcast.

Hi folks,
I have been checking through the latest emails and quite a few people
want to download all kinds of things to their iPhones. How about
checking out Phone Drive which lets you transfer things including
music if you like to your device. I have made a podcast on this, again
for another magazine but it may help someone. It also gives you the
facility to download and unzip from the Internet.
Search for Phone Drive on the App Store and it will show up.
Here's the link to my podcast if you are interested.

Enjoy!

Alarmed ~ Reminders, Timers, Alarm Clock
By Yoctoville

There's a pro version for about two dollars that gives you a few more
features and takes out all the ads.

One observation if the built in app instructions you get don't do the
trick or you are not happy try the app that follows. It is totally
accessible and extremely intuitive to use and will give you all types
of alarms for reminders wake up and timers with a nice number of
sounds.

The app is called

alarmed it is free with an extended version for either $1.99 or $2.99
don't remember.

Speeddots for IPhone 5

2012-11-22 Thread Tina Murphy
I went to the Speeddots site. There's a note there that says the
screen protector for the IPhone 5 is coming soon, and a link where you
can add your email for an early bird notice.
