Each time you restart the phone you have to enter your passcode, the same goes if you try Touch I d and after a certain number of attempts it doesn't recognize your fingerprint, it will then ask for the passcode to authenticate and unlock the phone. I don't know if you turn your phone often, but really you shouldn't. iPhones are designed to be on all the time and the don't have to be shut down at all. From time to time you may end up having to turn it off and back on if you have strange issues or of course there could be a time when you simply run out of battery and the phone turns itself off, but I literally go weeks and sometimes months without turning my phone off and back on and the only time I have to put in my passcode is when for some reason Face Id isn't working a few times one attempt after another (same goes for Touch Id) or for some other strange reason. But typically I again often go days without having to enter my passcode manually. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com On Behalf Of Margaret Thomas Sent: Tuesday, September 6, 2022 9:18 PM To: V iPhone list Subject: Re: Can I Use Touch ID Instead of Pass Code It's been asking for the Pass Code for months now. When I power up, it says Pass Code is required when phone starts up. My memory is that it started asking for it after I had set use Touch ID on the App Store instead of Apple ID. I turn on the phone much more than I get apps and had tried to change it to must use Apple ID on App Store in hopes of not being asked for the Pass Code to turn on the phone, but I still had to use the pass code. I THINK I could use Touch ID the other day when I installed a free app from the App Store and did not have to type my Apple ID but it wasn't a good day and my memory may not be correct. I don't want to get rid of the Pass Code entirely; having it helped with some mishap I had. I just would prefer not to have to type it in every time I use the phone. Thanks for that explanation. All I know is that if Apple decides to offer this it will most likely be perfectly secure. In any case, as I stated before, for me Face Id is a much better option, I can use it when it's cold out and I am wearing gloves and it works whether my fingers are full of little cuts and wood glue. RE: Can I Use Touch ID Instead of Pass Code
No, there is not, iPhones without a home button use Face Id and that has not changed with the iPhone 14's which were just announced this morning. I am not saying it's impossible that Apple at some point will introduced under-display Touch Id which then would have a Touch Id sensor under a particular spot of the display, but since it wasn't included this year it would be the iPhone 15 next September at the earliest that would have it and I wouldn't hold my breath. The SE2020 is my first smart phone and is my back up with my land line being my primary phone. I have the cell powered off most of the time and might power it on for texting or to check the weather app etc. I have Apple ID, Touch ID, and Pass Code set up and have purchased an app on the App Store. The way things are set up, I have to type in my pass code when I power up. I can usually do it correctly the first or second time so typing it isn't the problem; I'd prefer to use Touch Id instead if possible. I am not in a work or school situation and my house does not resemble Grand Central Station and I do not have a lot of personal information on the cell. The original post did say locked and not powered off. When I first got the cell and was trying to follow along with a tutorial, the phone kept saying locked what sounded every 30 seconds and locked became a "dirty" word and I never investigated what it was good for. I turned lock to never. I'm using the phone a little more now and would be willing to change that if someone could explain why it would be good when I use the phone so little. I'd greatly appreciate knowing if I can keep the pass code for when I needed it for other things and could use Touch ID when powering on. Margaret, Auto Lock under Display and brightness locks the phone when there is no screen activity. If you touch the screen or something is running that is causing the screen to refresh, it won't lock. Set it to five minutes, lay the phone down with nothing running and in five minutes it will lock. I have mine set to 5 minutes because it is only there in case I forget to manually lock the phone when I won't be using it for a while. Re: Can I Use Touch ID Instead of Pass Code
Sieghard and All: I want to keep Pass Code so it is available when needed and not totally disable it. I think 3 people have said that it is not a good idea to have the phone powered off most of the time as I have been doing and I want to try having it locked when I'm not using it to save the battery. I thought powering off when it isn't being used was saving the battery. I set it to never lock when I first got the phone months ago and I forget where I did it. I've spent hours this afternoon and tried the word lock in the settings app. I found one result for lock and never and there were several time periods in minutes and I double tapped on 5 minutes as an experiment. It's been much longer than 5 minutes and my home screen is still talking. I don't know if I missed a save button or if I'm misunderstanding something. Could you please help me out and give the proper location and time period to choose for the way I use the phone? I'm doing better with what I think is manual locking and the screen doesn't talk and I can press the home button and speech resumes. It's been a long day and I'm confused since I don't understand your saying "I personally am not one of those and want my phone to lock relatively quickly after I use it" since it went silent on me almost immediately. All help is greatly appreciated. Margaret On 9/7/2022 1:04 AM, Sieghard Weitzel wrote: Hello Margaret, As I already said in my previous email, you have to have a passcode as backup for Touch Id and you cannot unlock your phone after it was turned off with Touch Id, only the passcode will work here. Another place where only the passcode works is if you want to go back into Settings > Touch Id and Passcode so even if you decide you want to turn off Touch Id/passcode, you do have to enter it in order to get into that area of settings. Only you can know if you want to leave your phone open/unprotected. I assume if you kept it mostly at home, you don't have sensitive information on it and you don't plan to use Apple Pay then you could disable passcode/Touch Id. As for the automatic locking of the phone that again is your preference. There are others on this list who prefer to lock their phone manually by pressing the side button, I personally am not one of those and want my phone to lock relatively quickly after I use it because the more it is unlocked the more battery is used up. But then of course I have about 80 apps on my phone and use it constantly for anything from checking the time and the weather to checking email, sending and receiving text messages to doing online banking and using a variety of home automation devices like smart thermostats for my home and business, I have video cameras and a monitored alarm system at my business and have apps for that and I have video doorbell and cameras at home. Even if I don't actively use my phone I probably am listening to an Audible book while I am walking to or from work, at night before I go to sleep and so on. I never counted how often I use my phone each day, but I guess it must be at least 1 to 3 or 4 times an hour so over the course of a day I'd aay probably anywhere from 40 to 60 times when I grab my phone and unlock it to do something. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com On Behalf Of Margaret Thomas Sent: Tuesday, September 6, 2022 8:04 PM To: V iPhone list Subject: Can I Use Touch ID Instead of Pass Code Good Evening: The recent Face ID hit or miss thread caught my interest since, like the original poster, I have an iPhone SE 2020 and like Touch ID. Re: Can I Use Touch ID Instead of Pass Code
Thank you. It's normal state is powered off and I might use it 3 times a day, but don't always use it every day. When it was new and before I set locked to never, I could unlock it by pressing the home button. Is locked supposed to be so the screen can't inadvertently be changed rather than for keeping unauthorized people out, or is it a sort of sleep thing where the battery isn't being used at 100% capacity? If it is on and the battery is only slowly draining and I can press the home button and not have to do the Pass Code, it might be a solution. I think locked has something to do with inactivity, but it is only for occasional use and is not my primary phone. Any help is much appreciated. RE: Can I Use Touch ID Instead of Pass Code
Hello Margaret, As I already said in my previous email, you have to have a passcode as backup for Touch Id and you cannot unlock your phone after it was turned off with Touch Id, only the passcode will work here.
You can and you better know what your phone's passcode is because if you set up Touch Id you were only able to do so after also setting up an at least 4-digit passcode. By default the iPhone now asks for a 6-digit passcode and you rather deliberately have to select the 4-digit option. If you ever power off your phone you need your passcode after it restarts, so far Apple has not budged from that requirement whether you use Touch Id or Face Id. Also, if you go to Settings > Face Id and Passcode or Touch Id and Passcode and want to make any changes, you have to enter your passcode to get into that area, you cannot open that setting with Touch Id or Face Id. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com On Behalf Of Karen Poulakos Sent: Tuesday, September 6, 2022 8:57 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: Can I Use Touch ID Instead of Pass Code I've considered that myself. Re: Can I Use Touch ID Instead of Pass Code
It's been asking for the Pass Code for months now. RE: Can I Use Touch ID Instead of Pass Code
I've considered that myself. However, I've had times, especially in the winter, when my hands tend to be dryer, that Touch ID doesn't always work. I'm not sure how you would be able to access your phone if for some reason Touch ID wasn't responding, unless you could enter a pass code..
