We still use the bluetooth one for most things since I can use it with the app,
but when she wants to make a bigger pot of soup or make a big batch of rice or
for meal prep for the week, she’ll bust out the bigger one which is fine since
she’s sighted so accessibility isn’t an issue for her.

Hi List,

I know this isn't a cooking list but I have a question about the Instant Pot
and what exactly its iOS app allows one to control. I read the Instant Pot app
description and it seems to talk more about recipes as opposed to controlling
the device with the app. Can anyone who uses an Instant Pot give me some
direction on what the app allows you to do and whether it's accessible? Is
there a particular Instant Pot model that I need to get to obtain app control
over it?

Thanks so much for any help you can provide.

RE: Instant Pot App Accessibility and Features Question

2018-04-22 Thread Cristóbal
Made me look it up. The one I read about a few weeks ago was the Instant Pot
Max.

https://www.thekitchn.com/instant-pot-max-2018-new-features-254980

This one at least won’t have bluetooth and at the time of the article, is
guesstimated to be around $200. This is what in part made my wife to go ahead
and get the second 8 quart current model at the super cheap price back in
February.

2018-04-22 Thread Caitlyn Furness
I thought that too for a while, but then bit the bullet(or rather, my husband
did), and now I’d pay that all over again if I had to. This thing is
indispensible at our house, gets used almost daily for various things.
Remember, it’s not just a pressure cooker, it’s a slow cooker, yogurt maker,
steamer, rice cooker, etc, so it’s like six or seven appliances in one.

JMO, of course!

I am sorry to have mistakenly misled. When I was looking to buy the 6 quart

the InstantPot, I just wanted to make sure people are aware that the InstantPot
without the Bluetooth, I believe it is called the Duo, is still accessible.
My husband and I are both blind and we use ours without difficulty.

I know Amazon’s often the default, but other retailers sell it too. I got my
bluetooth model from BestBuy back in the day for example. My wife likes it so
much, she ended up getting the 8 quart regular instant pot at Kohls during a
sale. After redeeming coupons, gift cards and God knows what else, she got the
price down to something like $50.
We still use the bluetooth one for most things since I can use it with the app,
but when she wants to make a bigger pot of soup or make a big batch of rice or
for meal prep for the week, she’ll bust out the bigger one which is fine since
she’s sighted so accessibility isn’t an issue for her.

I read an article a few weeks ago where a new model was talked about. A
relocation of the pressure valve, less buttons on the console and some other
technical aspects having to do with the level of pressure the device can
achieve etc. Nothing for that model at least was mentioned about bluetooth.

The only Bluetooth model currently available is the Smart 60. It is a 6 quart.
You might try calling instant pot and depending on where you live, Canada or
USA there are different phone numbers. There is a new one coming out but it
hasn't yet. I would love to see an 8 quart come out with Bluetooth.

Subject: RE: Instant Pot App Accessibility and Features Question

Hi Mary,

Thanks so much for the details about the Bluetooth Instant Pot model.
Unfortunately, this model appears to no longer be available at least not from
Amazon in new condition. They have the Instant Pot Smart Bluetooth model in
standard 6 quart size but only have 3 used ones available and the two used,
like new ones were priced at $329. That seems exorbitant to me and since I'm
considering this as a gift, I wouldn't buy a used model anyway.

If someone knows of another Instant Pot model with Bluetooth that's still
obtainable, I'd love to know its specific name. I prefer buying on Amazon as
opposed to eBay but I suspect I'm going to have to come up with another gift
idea.

Thanks for the help from others who posted about the apps that work with
controlling the Bluetooth model versus those that are mainly recipes.

Hi Alan,
If you want to use the app, which is fully accessible, you would need to get
the instant pot model that includes Bluetooth. That unfortunately makes it a
good deal more expensive. The instant pot does have very tactile buttons on
the front. So if you didn’t want to spend the money, you could make yourself a
braille chart of what the buttons do. That having been said, I do have the
Bluetooth model and I’m glad. One of the things that you can do is adjust the
cooking duration. That is easy with the Bluetooth model. If you just have the
one with the buttons were nothing talks you would have to remember the various
amounts of time that you’re starting with depending on what operation you want
to do, and then I assume hit a plus or minus button to advance or decrease the
amount of time.

You can monitor the temperature with the app. You can monitor the time
remaining under pressure. You can set the duration as I noted. Of course, you
can also tell it to do various things like soup, rice, manual, there are a
whole bunch of them. I’m honestly not sure how much difference all those things
make, except there are times that are preset of course, but they can be changed
by you. You can also slow cook or make yogurt, none of which I have done. You
do have to pair the device, which means before you can do anything with the
app, you have to hit a certain button on the pot to start the process. And I
honestly don’t remember which one that is. There is a section for recipes. I
never use it. On the bottom there are tabs, and I always go to the one that
says dashboard. That is where you can decide what sort of cooking you want and
set the various parameters accessibly. You can do a lot with these things, and
I’m sure I have not made as much use of mind for different things as many
people on the huge Insta pot facebook group have done.

I'm wondering what Amazon you're shopping at to say that Instant Pot Bluetooth

Thanks.

Clearly, somebody is ripping somebody off. Even when new, the pot didn’t cost
anywhere close to $329. I do hope they come out with another Bluetooth model,
since this one is apparently not available anymore. Really too bad.

They are not so easy to find any more since InstantPot is no longer selling the
old bluetooth model as far as I know. Even last November during the Black
Friday/Cyber Monday week you could find all the other models at good sale
prices, but the bluetooth model was available at I think $199 here in Canada
and that was it. This is when I called InstantPot and was told it would be much
better to wait until the new bluetooth/smart cooker comes out this year and I
wouldn’t be surprised if this year we will also see good deals on it during
Black Friday. Wh o knows maybe there will be some good introductory deals also
when it does finally come out.

If you want full control of the Instant Pot via the app, you have to purchase
the Bluetooth model if you can find one.

Subject: Instant Pot App Accessibility and Features Question

$329? Sheesh! That's like three times the price of the one without
Bluetooth. No way  would I pay that even for a new one.

Hi Alan,
If you want to use the app, which is fully accessible, you would need
to get the instant pot model that includes Bluetooth. That
unfortunately makes it a good deal more expensive. The instant pot
does have  very tactile buttons on the front. So if you didn’t want to
spend the money, you could make yourself a braille chart of what the
buttons do. That having been said, I do have the Bluetooth model and
I’m glad. One of the things that you can do is adjust the cooking
duration. That is easy with the Bluetooth model. If you just have the
one with the buttons were nothing talks you would have to remember the
various amounts of time that you’re starting with depending on what
operation you want to do, and then I assume hit a plus or minus button
to advance or decrease the amount of time.

You can monitor the temperature with the app. You can monitor the time
remaining under pressure. You can set the duration as I noted. Of
course, you can also tell it to do various things like soup, rice,
manual, there are a whole bunch of them. I’m honestly not sure how
much difference all those things make, except there are times that are
preset of course, but they can be changed by you. You can also slow
cook or make yogurt, none of which I have done. You do have to pair
the device, which means before you can do anything with the app, you
have to hit a certain button on the pot to start the process. And I
honestly don’t remember which one that is. There is a section for
recipes. I never use it. On the bottom there are tabs, and I always go
to the one that says dashboard. That is where you can decide what sort
of cooking you want and set the various parameters accessibly. You can
do a lot with these things, and I’m sure I have not made as much use
of mind for different things as many people on the huge Insta pot
facebook group have done.

The only Bluetooth model currently available is the Smart 60. It is a 6
quart. You might try calling instant pot and depending on where you live,
Canada or USA there are different phone numbers. There is a new one coming
out but it hasn't yet. I would love to see an 8 quart come out with
Bluetooth.

The app allows you to set the type of cooking you want to do, how much
pressure (high or low), how long you want it to cook, if you want, you can
load recipes, go to keep warm function or cancel in the middle of a function
and a bunch more thing that I am not thinking about right now. You can also
check temperatures, how much duration you have left, pressure levels and
other things that you just can't do without the app. As a blind person I
wouldn't have it any other way. Yes, you can use it without the app, but
you are guessing and once the program is under way, you have no idea of what
actually is going on. I really do love my instant pot. Cooking is a blast
with it and you can cook things that might have taken all day before in just
a couple of hours or less. Stews and soups taste great and are in my
opinion even better than when slowcooked. Although, you can use the Instant
pot in slow cook mode if you like. I have and will continue to enjoy the
instant pot and the app.

RE: Instant Pot App Accessibility and Features Question

2018-04-21 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I posted last November that there is a new InstantPot (relatively new) which
has a dial and it certainly is not accessible for bvlind people. I think it’s
very user friendly for a sighted person and I gave it to the manager at my
retail store and his wife as a wedding gift.
At that time I called InstantPot and asked about the “smart” bluetooth model
and the guy I spoke with advised me not to buy it since a new bluetooth
InstantPot was supposed to come out in the first quarter of 2018. We are a few
weeks past the end of the first quarter and I have not seen it yet (just looked
the other day). I was planning to call them again, once I do I’ll post a
message and report what I was told.
Maybe they ran into an issue which delayed production, I mean if Tesla can’t
manage to make enough of the Model 3 and Elon Musk himself is sleeping at the
factory micro-managing everything one can probably forgive InstantPot if they
are a bit late *smile*.

whole bunch of them.

The app that you want to download to control the instant pot via bluetooth is
Smart Cooker”. The other instant pot app is indeed, just an app with different
recipes.

This is very interesting. Someone else with whom I corresponded on this topic
told me they didn't think having the iOS access and accessibility was
worthwhile. With all you mentioned, I can't possibly imagine how my

Thanks for the tip on that book by Melissa Clark, Penny. I don’t believe I have
that one. I have certainly got enough other ones. Sigh. I guess I’m not very

But this is not a cooking list, so I will not go on and on. Nice to see you

Thanks, Penny. I did get a couple pressure-cooker books from Bookshare

Thanks, Mary. I do use the old one without Bluetooth without difficulty.
You're right, though, it requires knowing what buttons you're pushing
before you start in to pushing them. LOL. That's not really a problem,
although because I don't use it every day or even every week, I have to
relearn it every time. While that's not a problem hfor me, yes, the
accessible remote control of the appliance would be nice. If I ever
needed a new one, I think I'd go for the one with Bluetooth capability .

Re: Instant Pot App Accessibility and Features Question

2018-04-21 Thread Penny Reeder
Hi, I have been using the Instant Pot for about a year. I think I use
it at least once a week, and I really enjoy using it. I can't imagine
not having the blue tooth connectivity. Not only does it make setting
all of the seetings -- including function, time, level, etc. --
possible, but the IOS connectivity lets you keep track of what the
Instant Pot is doing. I definitely recommend paying the extra money
for the blue tooth connectivity and access to the IOS app.

As for new features, I read that the new model allows for higher
pressure -- high enough to allow people use it for canning fruits and
vegetables.

2018-04-21 Thread Mary Otten
Hi Les,
You know, I heard the same thing about a new pot that was coming out. I heard
they came out with something, and then there was a recall. I also know there
was one that came out that was not good for us, and I’m not sure if that was
the one that was recalled. So in short, I don’t know. I had also heard that
stock of the older models was running short, but I did not hear that
specifically about the Bluetooth model. Frankly, were I sighted, I don’t know
that I would’ve paid the extra for the Bluetooth. But I would not be without
it, since memorizing all that stuff at this point in my life is frankly beyond
my pay grade. Smile.
And thank you for your good wishes about my treatment. I guess it was
successful, so far, except I am left with really bad neuropathy in my feet,
which means I can’t use my guy dog and have lost all independent mobility
outside of the house. That is difficult to take.

Hi Mary,

First of all, and most importantly, I hope you are doing well. I hope the
treatment you had to go through went well for you. Regarding the instant pot, I
had a question. I thought I read that that was going to be a new model coming
out this year which was going to have some added benefit for us. But I don’t
recall if that ever hit the market. Do you know anything about this? Thank you.

Re: Instant Pot App Accessibility and Features Question

2018-04-21 Thread Mary Otten
Hi Alan,
If you want to use the app, which is fully accessible, you would need to get
the instant pot model that includes Bluetooth.
